Chamber bringing roaring good time to Showcase Seguin

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce says businesses are running out of time to get signed up for this year's Showcase Seguin. The popular business trade show is set to run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 13 in the Seguin Coliseum.

Chamber volunteer Audra Atzger is again helping to organize the event. Atzger says anyone, who does business in the Seguin area, should defintely sign up for a booth at Showcase Seguin 2020, which features a Roaring '20s theme.

"We are gearing up, and we are ready for fabulous roaring '20s party. We want everybody to come get involved. February 13 is the Showcase Seguin, Business Showcase. We do have limited booths available still. So those businesses that haven't signed up, we would like for you guys to head over to the chamber...and register your booths," said Atzger.

Southside doors closed at Seguin City Hall

(Seguin) -- If you have business to conduct at Seguin City Hall, you need to take notice of a change in the way that you can access the building.

The south entrance to the building is now closed. The announcement was made on Thursday that the door would be closed perma-

nently.

The public will now only be able to enter City Hall through the west entrance on River Street.

That door leads into the city's utility billing office lobby.

If you need access to offices in other parts of the building, you will need to check-in at the

main reception area next to the utility billing office.

Again, city officials say the south entrance is closed, the public needs to use the River Street entrance, and access to other offices, including the mayor, city manager or human resources -can only be reached after checking in at the new main reception area next to utility billing.

Commissioners Court meets this week

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court on Tuesday will conduct its first meeting of the new year.

The court will tackle multiple agenda items tied to administration of both the Democratic and Republican primary elections on Tuesday, March 3.

Commissioners are set to approve the early voting schedule and polling locations for the joint primary elections.

They are also expected to pass a resolution authorizing the elections office to conduct those primaries, and it will approve the joint election agreements approved by both parties.

Unlike the general election

date in November, the primary elections are controlled by each respective party.

In other business, the court is slated to receive monthly reports from the county's Environmental Health Department and the MIS Department. The court will also consider the reappointment of Bill Jones to

the Luling Foundation Board of Trustees, and administer the oath and approve the official bond for Brandon Lee Torres, who will serve as a deputy constable in the Precinct 1 Constable's Office.

The commissioners court meeting gets underway at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Guadalupe County Courthouse.

Lizzie Abrameit tops 1,000 Matadors run away career points in Marion girls’ from Cowboys in first loss to La Vernia district win (La Vernia) - Marion senior Lizzie Abrameit drained a three-pointer in the second quarter of the Bulldogs’ 52-28 loss in La Vernia Friday night to reach the 1,000-point milestone in her high school basketball career.

Abrameit is the ninth Marion player in Kollyn McWhinney’s 16 seasons as the program’s head coach to score over 1,000 career points. She and 2018 graduate Madelyn Abrameit are the first pair of sisters to accomplish that feat during that span.

Abrameit finished with 10 points, three rebounds, and two blocks on the night. Lily Bek added seven points and two assists. Molly Rooke grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with four points and two steals. Anessa Madrid chipped in with seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Slow start plagues Seguin girls in road loss to McCollum

(San Antonio) - The Seguin girls basketball team is still searching for its first District 26-5A win after a 49-43 road loss to San Antonio-McCollum on Friday.

The Cowgirls put the Mats in a 25-13 hole by the end of the first quarter, and the deficit was still 11

points, 44-33, going into the fourth period. Seguin outscored McCollum 10-5 in the final frame, but couldn’t come all the way back.

Tresalyn Roberts led the Mats offensively with 13 points. Taylor Bode and Liv Hernandez each put in seven. Cyan Clack and Nevaeh Quiroga added four

each, Kaitlyn Ranft and Reese Brittain three apiece, and Emily Hernandez two.

Seguin is 0-6 in district play, 10-15 overall. The Matadors continue the 26-5A schedule Tuesday at Goldie Harris Gym with a 6:30 p.m. tip against San Antonio-Memorial.

Navarro boys edge Brooks in 30-4A opener (San Antonio) - Navarro opened the District 30-4A boys basketball schedule with a 53-50 road win over Brooks Academy in San Antonio Friday afternoon.

Grant Chase scored 15 points to lead the Panthers.

Cooper Guetzke also reached double figures with 11. Keegan Pugh added contributed nine points, Reece Rojas five, Ian Osborne and Nick Billings two apiece.

Navarro trailed 13-6 at the end of the first period, but outscored Brooks 19-12 in the second quarter to knot up the contest 25-all by halftime. The Panthers edged the Bengals 15-14 in the third quarter and 1311 in the fourth.

The win moves Navarro’s overall record back to .500 at 10-10. The Panthers host Gonzales in a district game at the Navarro Events Center in Geronimo on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.

Congress Asks SCOTUS To Reconsider Roe v. Wade

Food Labels Now Have Two Columns

(Washington, DC) -- More than 200 members of Congress want the U.S. Supreme Court to take another look at Roe vs. Wade. The landmark decision more than four decades ago legalized abortion across the country. The senators and representatives signed an amicus brief asking the high court to reconsider or even overrule the decision. The brief says the case "remains a radically unsettled precedent." The lawmakers signed the document in support of an abortion law in Louisiana.

The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to that law later this year. Only two Democratic representatives signed the brief.

(White Oak, MD) -- New food labels are making it clear just how many calories people will really eat. The FDA's new rules of two side-by-side columns kicked in Wednesday. The first column includes nutritional facts in a single serving while the second shows info for the entire package.

Companies that sell less than 10-million dollars in food a year have until next year to make the changes.

FDA Moves Aggressively To Curb E-Cig Use Among Teens (Washington, DC) -- The FDA is moving aggressively to curb the use of e-cigarettes by young people. The FDA has issued a new rule prohibiting sweet flavors for small, cartridge-based e-cigs that are most popular among teens. Those smaller cartridges are sometimes referred to as "pods."

The sweet flavors that are being targeted include fruit, candy, mint and desserts. The flavor ban does not include juices for larger vaping devices that are favored by adults and are sold in vape shops, where age restrictions are more strictly enforced.

Brooklyn Borough President Supports NYPD Breast Pump Lawsuit (Brooklyn, NY) -- Brooklyn's Borough President Eric Adams is joining others in demanding lactation rooms for women on the New York City police force. Adams is a former NYPD officer. A lawsuit by five breastfeeding police officers claims nursing mothers are forced to pump breast milk in cars and bodega bathrooms and then store the milk in dirty refrigerators. Mayor de Blasio and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg are named in the suit.

Girl Scouts for her daughters, served on several civic committees, and was a member of the local Republican Women’s Association.

As an avid Bridge player, Millie belonged to several bridge clubs in Seguin with numerous long-time dear friends. Deeply involved in her church, the First United Methodist Church of Seguin, Millie was a longtime devoted member of The Sharer's Sunday School Class.

Millie also volunteered for other church activities and events such as cooking dinner for the kids of the MYF, teaching Vacation Bible School, serving as Treasurer for her Sunday School class, boxing food for Angel Food Ministries, helping stock food at the Christian Cupboard, sewing costumes and other items for children’s nativity programs, volunteering in the Pumpkin Patch, serving as a church service usher, and much more.

Linda Ann Boyd Wallace, age 75 of Seguin, passed away on December 18, 2019.

A memorial service celebrating Linda’s life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2019 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Seguin with Rev. Jeremy Roy and Rev. Neil Kibbe officiating. A reception will follow at the Wallace Family Home. Private Interment will be held at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Linda was born on October 12, 1944 in Shreveport, Louisiana to William and Inace (Burdine) Boyd. Her husband Rick Wallace, parents, brother Ron Boyd and two infant daughters preceded her in death. Survivors include daughter, Traci Brodbeck and husband Neal; son, Boyd Wallace; granddaughters, Morgan Burden and husband Nick, and Glenn Brodbeck; grandsons, Carter and Racer Wallace; great-grandson, Shepherd John Burden; the David Lutz family; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends. She met the love of her life, Rick, at a dance in Garner State Park in 1961 – a park built by her father-in-law during the CCC Boys era. In Seguin, she owned and operated Linda Wallace Interiors where she created both beautiful places to live and work. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, always setting a Godly example for them as well as others to follow. Millie was born on June 6, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to Eugene and Amelia “Millie” (Gonsiorowski) Lukasik.

She grew up in downtown Chicago with her brothers Danny and Gene, and loved their frequent trips to their grandparent’s farm in Wisconsin. Millie attended school in Chicago until her senior year of high school when her family moved to Arlington Heights, IL. She graduated high school from Arlington Heights High School after which she began working at Motorola in Franklin Park, IL. It was there that she met the love of her life, Bill Deiker.

Bill and Millie were married in January of 1960, and moved to Bloomingdale, IL where they began their family life, welcoming four children into the world. While Bill traveled extensively for work, Millie raised four children and created a beautiful home each time Motorola transferred them to a new city or state. When the children were young and while still in Illinois, Millie taught Sunday School classes, volunteered with swimming lessons, served as a room mother for her children's various classrooms, and was a Cub Scout and Webelos Den Mother. She taught neighbors to sew, and sewed clothing for people who needed assistance.

Millie, Bill and their family moved to Seguin in 1972, where she continued her focus on her family and community. Millie led troops of Brownies and

A loving mother and homemaker, Millie was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays.

She loved to sew and quilt, and was also quite skilled with knitting needles. Over the years, Millie gifted her family and friends with amazing handmade sweaters, scarves, quilts, clothing items, and housewares, all of which are treasured to this day. Millie especially loved her role as “Nana” to her many grand- and greatgrandchildren. Millie is preceded in death by her loving husband William “Bill” Deiker, her son, William “Billy” Deiker, her parents, her brother, Gene Lukasik and her aunt, Ida Koll. Survivors include her daughters, Kathy Roberts and partner, Keith Lincoln, Susan Lange, and Barbara Marques and husband, Darrell; grandchildren, Chris Deiker, Parker Roberts, Carson Roberts, Hannah Roberts, Austin Lange, David Lange and wife Victoria, Rachel Marques, and Sarah Marques; great-grandchildren, Max, Paityn and Barrett Lange; brother, Daniel Lukasik and wife Michal Mendelski; sister-in-law, Helen Lukasik; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Phil Rinn for his many, many years of care; Dr. Janice Mullens of Texas Oncology for her care and guidance; the nurses and aides of River City Hospice in San Antonio who provided care in Millie’s final days; members of The (FUMC) Sharer’s Sunday School Class and other FUMC members for their prayers and ongoing support; Rev. Cathe Evins for home visits in Seguin and San Antonio to provide communion, and comfort and reassurance; her many friends for prayers and kind words of support; and her devoted group of closest friends who cared for her, traveled with her, visited her, and laughed with her and loved her dearly until the end.

Anthony “Tony” Bonkowski

Anthony “Tony” Bonkowski, age 82 of Seguin, passed away on December 25, 2019.

A memorial service celebrating Tony’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Cross Church with Rev. Jim Price officiating.

A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Private interment will take place at a later date in the Lockhart City Cemetery. Tony was born on January 14, 1937 in Lockhart, Texas to Katie Bonkowski. He grew up in Lockhart under the loving care of his Polish immigrant grandparents, Wladyslaw “Walter” Antoni and Marjanna “Mary” (Nagrodzka) Bonkowski.

Tony proudly served his country in the Texas National Guard for 12 years and for 18 months in the Army Reserve. He served as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America at a local church for 13 years, was President of Seguin Plumbing Board for eight years, and was a member of the Seguin Hermann Sons Lodge #37.

Tony enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Happy Soles Square Dance Club of Seguin.

He is preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents. Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy Huebner Bonkowski; son, Terry Roy Bonkowski and wife Beverly; grandchildren, Bailey Hubbard and Wyatt Hubbard; nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members throughout Texas and Duncan, Oklahoma, and friends.
