Seguin MLK Committee gearing up for Freedom Week celebration Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- Seguin boasts one of the largest celebrations of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Seguin MLK Day Planning is releasing its lineup for this year’s event, which runs from Thursday, Jan. 11 through Monday, Jan. 15 at several locations around Seguin.

MLK Committee members Herman Lampkin, Terrance McClain and Joe Patterson will be the guests this week on radio station KWED’s Saturday Topic program.

The trio will discuss the ins and outs of this year’s celebration of Dr. King.

Lampkin says the five day event includes a solid lineup, that offers something for everyone. This list includes a MLK Banquet and Play, a Gospel Fest featuring the Seguin Community Choir, a church service, the Seguin ISD’s Choir Showcase, the annual MLK Freedom March and more. The banquet and play at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 in the Coliseum is the only paid event.

Tickets to the play are $50 each

and can be purchased now from any MLK Committee member.A link to purchase tickets and sponsorships can also be found the Seguin MLK Facebook page.

Lampkin says they hope everyone can come out and see what’s being offered this year.

“Yeah, it’s a great opportunity for us to come together and remember everything that his life stood for. We always have a week-long celebration of great events, that we really strongly encourage everybody to come out and be a part of,” said Lampkin.

There’s a great deal of political divisiveness in America today.

McClain says the Seguin MLK Freedom Week activities are all designed to bring people together to celebrate a true American hero. He says it’s important to remember this history.

People moving to Texas as local, state economy grows Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is growing, which is now surprise if you see all the houses going up around town. That growth in Seguin is being replicated in several other parts of the Texas. In fact, the latest data from truck rental company U-Haul suggest that more and more people are moving to Texas. This is the third straight year that Texas has topped the U-Haul Growth Index, which looks at the number of one-way movers.

Florida came in second. And, for the fourth year in a row, California had the largest net loss of one-way movers.

The report from U-Haul isn’t all that suprising to Glen Hamer, of the Texas Association of Business. He says there are several things that are attracting new people to the Lone Star State.

“Texas is the land of opportunity.

We have the strongest economy in the United States of America,” said Hamer.

A few years ago Texas started attracting more and more tech jobs, which also brought more new people to the state. Hamer says the economy is diverse and it continues to grow.

“This is an economy that is firing on all cylinders -- in every sector,” said Hamer.

A favorable cost-of-living for much of the state is helping to attract new people to Texas. Hamer says there’s also an abundance of good paying jobs, which acts as a magnet for the state.

“People from all around the country are coming to Texas to pursue their employment dreams. There’s just no economy in the country that’s

stronger (than Texas),” said Hamer.

The U-Haul Growth Index largerly supports some of the other recent economic data reported about Texas. Governor Greg Abbott this week is touting new numbers from the Bureau of Economic Analysis that shows the Texas economy grew faster than the rest of the nation.

During the third quarter of 2023, the Texas GDP grew at 7.7 percent, while the rest of the nation grew at 4.9 percent. This is the fifth straight quarter that saw Texas outpace the rest of the country. Governor Abbott called Texas the “undisputed economic leader” in the United States.These figures come on the heels of November’s employment numbers, that showed Texas adding more jobs over the past year than any other state.

Project may connect Texas power with SE grid (Austin) -- The Texas power grid, which currently sits on an island, may soon be connected with grids in the southeastern portions of the United States. Texas currently has a stand alone approach to its electricity system’s backbone.

Connecting the Texas grid with other electricity infrastructure is something that the state legislature has been debating for a long time.

State Senator Jose Menedez says now be the time to take that action.

“It only makes sense, because we have, at times, so much power, that I believe we could export,” said Menedez.

Senator Menendez says it just makes sense for the state to take this action. He says it not only protects the energy supply in Texas, but he believes it would also be good for Texas consumers.

“We could export power and end up reducing the cost to Texans,” said Menedez.

state, it might also help during severe weather situations. Senator Menendez says the state should do all that it can to ease fears over another disaster related to the state’s power grid.

“If there’s a weather phenomenon going on that is causing a problem with generating power, I think it’s important for us to be able to help each other out,” said Menedez.

Having a secondary power

source available might help to avoid disasters, like Winter Storm Uri. The storm, in February of 2021, plunged the state into darkness for days.

This current plan, for connecting the state’s power grid, calls for a private 400-mile transmission line that would stretch to Mississippi. But the plan still faces some opposition from the state of Louisiana, which says that it would not benefit from the project.

I want to see it (grow), and I want to see more people involved in it, (and) not just the Black/African-American community. I want others to be involved in it too, because Black History is everyone’s history,” said McClain.

The community-wide tradition of celebrating the legacy of Dr. King goes back decades in Seguin. Patterson says the committee and its partners have been working for years to grow the local MLK Day activities. He says not only do they continue to produce a multi-day event in Seguin, but the committee has also offered its support for other emerging MLK events in other parts of the state.

“The MLK Committee of Seguin has branched out and we’ve assisted and helped (places like) Kingsville to become a part of our ideas or our mission. They (now) have their own version of a Martin Luther King celebration at the same time that we have ours. We haven’t been able to keep up with them, but we (helped) get them off the ground and got them (going). New Braunfels is another one (we helped). We were very instrumental in getting them started. So, we’re not locking this into Seguin and Guadalupe County. No, this is broad and it’s spreading,” said Patterson.

Texas Lutheran Golf Announces 2024 Schedule Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

SEGUIN, Texas -- In his 25th season as the head coach of the Texas Lutheran men’s and women’s golf programs, HC Tran ‘90 announced the 2024 schedule on Thursday.

Tran will take his Bulldogs primarily across the state of Texas with a four tournament slate for men’s golf while women’s golf will participate in three tournaments ahead of the 2024 SCAC Championships, which are set to be held at White Bluff Golf Course in Waco, Texas.

To kick off their spring schedule the Bulldogs will travel to Houston for the Space City Classic (Feb. 26-27) with women’s golf making their second consecutive appearance in the tournament.

March 18-19 will see the teams split as men’s golf participates in The Texas Cup in Irving while women’s golf ventures to Bossier City, Louisiana to participate in the Hal Sutton Invitational.

Men’s golf will travel to Round Rock for the Linda Lowery Invitational (March 25-26) before both squads wrap their regular seasons in Georgetown at the West Region Invitational (Apr. 8-9).

Following play at Berry Creek Golf Club in Georgetown, the Bulldogs will begin preparing for postseason at the 2024 SCAC Championships (Apr. 21-23) in Waco. Junior Tobey Wills (Richmond/Foster) has finished in the top five of the SCAC Championship tournament every year so far in his career.

The Division-III Men’s Golf NCAA Championships will take place in Boulder City, Nevada, May 14-17 while the NCAA Division-III Women’s Golf NCAA Championships will take place in Nicholasville, Kentucky, the following week from May 21-24.

Knodel

Edgar Allen Knodel, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on January 2, 2024. Edgar was born in Guadalupe County, Texas to Lilly Mae (Seay) and Paul H. Knodel. Born and raised in Seguin, Edgar was a 1955 graduate of Seguin High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for a brief time. Sarah Ann Elley and Edgar married on September 22, 1960. He retired from Civil Service after many years of maintaining government warehouses.

Edgar was an honorary member of the Guadalupe County Sherriff ’s Mounted Posse. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and coffee time with all his coffee buddies. His most treasured times were spent with family, especially at the holidays.

Edgar is preceded in death by his loving wife Sarah Knodel, his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lola and Albert Elley, brother, Paul Knodel, Jr., sisters, Virginia Jahns, Pearl Graham, Wilma Inez Roe, and

Evelyn Olga (Busch) Lenz passed away on December 30, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 76. She was born on October 25, 1947, in Seguin, Texas. Evelyn will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.

Evelyn was a woman of remarkable determination and dedication. She graduated from Seguin High School in 1966. After graduation, she began working at Lehman’s until 1972. Evelyn then spent 35 years working at Hexcel Corporation until

her well-earned retirement.

Outside of her professional life, Evelyn had a host of hobbies and interests that brought her much joy. She loved spending time with family and cherished every moment with them. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and loved making new friends. Evelyn had an appreciation for flowers and plants that brightened her surroundings. Additionally, Evelyn found delight in playing bingo and could often be found sewing or reading a captivating book.

She is also preceded in death by her parents: Olga Lehman Busch and Henry Joseph Busch; as well as her mother-in-law Thelka F. (Vader) Lenz and father-in-law Anton Franz Lenz.

Evelyn leaves behind a legacy through her surviving family members: son, James Lenz and his wife Pamela (Wallace) Lenz; grandson, Colton Lenz; niece, Brenda Salge Martin and her husband David; nephew, Kevin Salge and his wife Jennifer; great nephew, Bly Martin and his fiancé Samantha Davis.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin, Texas. The service will commence at 1:00 PM, with a burial following at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park in New Braunfels, Texas.

The family would like to extend thanks to the doctors and nurses of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Stone Oak Methodist Hospital, and Hope Hospice for their exceptional care in Evelyn’s final days.

Wendy Judith Parker, age 55 of Seguin passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Wendy was born in Rochester, New York to Maureen Babachicos and Ronald E. Corron. Wendy was an amazing soul who was cherished by so many. If you met Wendy, you loved Wendy. Wendy had a way of making strangers feel like they’d known her for their entire life. She lit up every room with her smile and warm spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved music, movies, and anything that included her loving

family and girlfriends.

Wendy attended Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas and went on to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She also achieved a Master’s Degree in Strategic Communications and Leadership from Seton Hall University. Wendy had an impressive professional career. Fresh out of high school, her unique story started in the mailroom at the Boeing Company where she went on to become Communications Manager in Houston for the Space Division and in San Antonio for the Military Aircraft Division.

She spent almost 28 years with Boeing. This was a true success story of grit

and determination. She left Boeing in 2015 to become the Sr. Corporate Communications Manager for the Public Affairs Division at Zachry Construction in San Antonio, Texas.

Wendy was preceded in death by her father.

Wendy met her soulmate, Steve Parker, and they had a magical love affair for the last 15 years. Survivors include her loving husband; her sons Hayden Starr of San Antonio Texas, Gage Parker of Lubbock Texas; daughters Hannah Locklear of Tacoma, Washington and Madison Parker of Austin, Texas. Wendy was also Gigi to two grandsons Julian and Deacon Starr. She is also survived by her Mother Maureen Corron and Maureen’s companion Jim Bordelon, her brother Ryan Corron and his companion Vickie Hester, her sister Catherine Carter and husband Pat Carter, and her daughter-in-law Tori Starr. She had some of the best girlfriends who were always there for her as she was for them.

Melvin Ernest Dojahn, age 94 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 30, 2023. Melvin was born on September 10, 1929 in Karnes City, Texas, to Herman and Annie (Retzloff ) Dojahn.

Melvin is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Mae Kutz Dojahn, his parents and his siblings, Clara Katzer, George Dojahn, Elenora Hackbarth, and Milda Schulenburg.

Krippner

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith.

Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football.

Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile.

Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends.

Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love.

A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Appeals Court Rules Texas Can Ban Emergency Abortions (Austin, TX) -- An appeals court is ruling that Texas can ban abortions even in emergency situations. In 2022, the US Department of Health and Human Services said medical providers should offer abortions during medical emergencies, even in states where abortions are banned.

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued in an attempt to block that ruling and on Tuesday, an appeals court sided with him.

Wisconsin Birth Rate Increased More Than Two Percent During Abortion Pause (Madison, WI) -- The Wisconsin birth rate increased two-point-five percent while Planned Parenthood paused abortions last year. The IZA Institute of Labor Economics study says more than 15-hundred of the babies born in Wisconsin since June of 2022 were a result of Roe v. Wade being federally overturned. Wisconsin became one of 13 states with what the study classifies as a total abortion ban -- but a Dane County judge ruled earlier this year that consensual abortions are legal in the state. Of the thirteen states with total abortion bans, the study says 32-thousand-300 babies born were also as a result of the decision.

New Hampshire Luxury Result Linked To Two Legionnaires’ Cases (Whitefield, NH) -- A New Hampshire luxury resort is linked to two Legionnaires’ Disease cases, one of them deadly. The state Division of Public Health Services is investigating what happened at the Mountainview Grand Resort in Whitefield. The husband of the 71-year-old Massachusetts woman, who died in October a week after her stay at the resort, said his wife had used the hot tub at the spa which has since been shut down.

Legionnaires’ Disease, which is a type of pneumonia, is typically spread through water aerosols, often in communal settings like hospitals, hotels or apartment buildings.

Dry January Underway (Undated) -- It’s a new year and with that comes what’s known as Dry January. During the month-long challenge, health officials are urging people to stop drinking alcohol - or at least cut back. The research firm Morning Consult says about 90-percent of those taking part in Dry January do so seeking health benefits. Seventy-three percent do so to save money.

Q: I received two beautiful poinsettias this year and would like to see if I can have them rebloom this coming year. What should I be doing?

A: First of all, make sure you are treating them correctly. Your holiday poinsettias should have bright natural light for at least 6 hours a day (or twice that amount of fluorescent light). The room temperature should be 68 to 72 degrees. Water when the soil is dry 1 to 2 inches deep. Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac gives a schedule for you to use to make sure your plant will rebloom the following Christmas.

On New Year’s Day start fertilizing every 3 weeks. By February 14 prune your plant to 8 inches tall. On St. Patrick’s Day, place the plant outside in morning sun and afternoon shade. On Memorial Day trim 3 inches from the end of each branch and then repot into a larger container. Move into direct sun. On July 4 trim branches again and start weekly fertilizing. On Labor Day move the plant into indirect light. When cool nights are forecast, move indoors but the plant must still receive 6 hours of direct light through a window.

Cut fertilizer back to once every three weeks. On September 21 give the plant 14 hours of darkness and 10 hours of bright light every day. (Welsh suggests a cardboard box placed over plant from about 5 p.m. to about 7 a.m.). Follow this until Thanksgiving. Then keep the plant in the brightest natural light you have.

This sounds like a massive amount of work to me. So the year before last, I put my Christmas poinsettia on the back porch with my orchids when the weather got warm enough. Amazingly, by Thanksgiving the leaves were starting to turn red. My back porch faces east and there are no bright lights back there so the plant was able to follow the natural rhythm of nights getting longer in fall.

Q: I have some freeze damage. Can I prune now? What about other garden chores?

A: Pruning is best done in February or March. If you leave the frozen plant material alone, it provides some insulation for healthy tissue, as well as gives hiding places for birds and other animals. However, you may clean debris from your planting beds in case there are insect pests, or plant diseases.

Bare-root roses, fruit and nut plants may be planted this month.

Cool season annuals may also be planted. I have ornamental kale at the library this winter. They are starting to put on a little color.

Bluebonnet transplants can also be planted. Most of mine in the lawn are already an inch or two high.

Keep your birdbaths filled. And if a freeze is predicted and the ground is dry, water. Welsh reminds us that plants are more likely to suffer freeze damage under dry soil conditions and water stress. Have a Happy and Green New Year!
