Seguin Public Library’s “New Beginnings” Winter Art Exhibit Opens Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Public Library is again showcasing the talents of local artists. The library recently announced the opening of its “New Beginnings” exhibit.

Assistant Library Director Hannah Farmer says the exhibit is part of a rotating collection of works, that’s put on display inside the library.

“People can expect to come view local artists’ work, (that’s) on exhibit on the second floor (of the library) on our art wall.

Our new exhibit is titled “New Beginnings.” So, it’s perfect for the New Year. It’s up now and it will be up all the way through March 15th,” said Farmer.

Farmer they are thrilled to be able to share these works with the community. It just provides another reason for folks to come explore the library.

All Seguin ISD students need clear backpacks Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- Classes resume today in the Seguin ISD. The start of the new semester will bring with it a new policy that requires all students to have a clear backpack. The policy was already in place at the district's middle and high school campuses. That rule will now be expanded to the younger grade levels.

The district sent an email this week, reminding parents about the change.

"In September, Seguin ISD initiated a phase-in for clear backpacks for our pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students. While most of our students have acquired a clear backpack since then, we want

to remind all of our parents of this expectation," stated the letter.

District officials say if you need assistance acquiring a clear backpack for your child, there is help available. A link to the district's Clear Backpack Assistance Form can be found at http://tinyurl.com/ SISDbackpackassistance.

Anti-DEI law now on the books in Texas (Austin) -- Texas has more than two-dozen new laws that go into effect this week, including a controversial one that bans what are called "diversity, equity and inclusion" offices at public universities. LULAC National President Domingo Garcia blasted the move. He says that minorities have been gaining ground in Texas and he feels this is attempt to stop that. Garcia says that he also fears this will hurt recruitment to the Lone Star State.

The law was passed largely by Republcians, who argued that university hiring cannot be based on factors "other than merit." However, some Texas schools have found loopholes around the new law. The University of North Texas recently announced a new Center for Belonging and

Engagement as a way to promote inclusivity.

The new DEI law is one of several new laws that officially hit the books in Texas on January 1.

“We’re excited about this exhibit because there are some really beautiful pieces of art, that all kind of incorporate this ‘New Beginnings’ theme in one way or another. And there’s also going to be a little bit of a treasure hunt in the brochure that goes along with the art to encourage art appreciation,” said Farmer.

A wide selection of work will be on display as part of this exhibit. Farmer says people are encouraged to get a copy of the exhibit’s brochure, and then take a look at each piece on display.

“Our patrons can come on in and head up to the second floor, where we have the brochures at the service desk on the second floor. And then they can, you know, peruse the selections, (and) take a look at the art wall. There’s a description of each one, and a little biography of each local artist so that they can learn more. Some of the paintings in this exhibit are based on classic pieces. So, patrons are encouraged to go take a look at the art books in our in our collection of books, and actually...peruse them to look for the classics that the works are based on,” said Farmer.

Farmer says they are not only eager to have people come enjoy this latest art display, but the library is also reaching out to other artist in the community. She says they are always looking for artwork that can become a part of future shows.

“I would just encourage any interested artists to keep an eye on our social media (pages) and press releases if they want to participate in future exhibits. Because this is a rotating art exhibit, that we do quarterly (or) three times a year. And we’re just excited to showcase new talent and local talent especially,” said Farmer.

The library Winter Art Exhibit, “New Beginnings,” opened Saturday, December 30 and will rung through March 15. The artwork is all located on the library’s second floor.

The selections for this show are “Kinetic Green” by Penny Gonzales, “Getting Sucker Punched by a Fellow Skydiver” by Jake McGrath, “Dream Catcher” by Cynthia Vela Glass, “The Blues” by Noel Laue, and a series by Lynn Lehenbauer including “Portrait of Venus,” “Girl on a Swing,” and “You’re Home Odysseus.”

Seguin seniors Neumann and Contreras to play in Hawaii Tiki Bowl on Saturday Chris Austin

(Honolulu, HI) -- Two Seguin High School senior football players are headed to the Aloha State to compete in an all-star football game.

Center Cooper Neumann and defensive lineman Evrin Contreras will participate in the Hawaii Tiki Bowl on Saturday in Honolulu, Hawaii. The game is comprised of players from across the country who are recommended by college and high school coaches as well as a national recruiting service.

Neumann was named to the All-District 12-5A First Team in December.

He was an all-district second team selection as a junior in 2022. Neumann currently has college football offers from UT-Rio Grande Valley, East Central University, North American University, Hardin Simmons University, Louisiana Christian University, McMurry University, East Texas Baptist University, Howard Payne University and Graceland University.

Contreras earned second team all-district in 2023 and was a first team all-district selection in 2022. In nine games played in 2023, Contreras led all Matador defensive linemen with 32 total tackles including two for loss. He also had two sacks and one forced fumble during the 2023 campaign.

Neumann and Contreras will compete on Team Hanohano. The two Matadors will be among 22 players from Texas on the team which will be coached by Sherard Poteete of Trinity Valley College in Athens, Texas and Buck Buchanan of Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. The game will be played at 2 p.m. Hawaii time on Saturday or 6 p.m. in Seguin.

More Seguin High School student-athletes will be headed to Hawaii next month. The Seguin softball team will compete at the 38th Annual Waimea High School Varsity Softball Tournament February 22nd through the 24th in Kekaha, Hawaii.

Edgar Allen Knodel, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on January 2, 2024. Edgar was born in Guadalupe County, Texas to Lilly Mae (Seay) and Paul H. Knodel. Born and raised in Seguin, Edgar was a 1955 graduate of Seguin High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for a brief time. Sarah Ann Elley and Edgar married on September 22, 1960. He retired from Civil Service after many years of maintaining government warehouses.

Edgar was an honorary member of the Guadalupe County Sherriff ’s Mounted Posse. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and coffee time with all his coffee buddies. His most treasured times were spent with family, especially at the holidays.

Wendy Judith Parker, age 55 of Seguin passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Wendy was born in Rochester, New York to Maureen Babachicos and Ronald E. Corron. Wendy was an amazing soul who was cherished by so many. If you met Wendy, you loved Wendy. Wendy had a way of making strangers feel like they’d known her for their entire life. She lit up every room with her smile and warm spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved music, movies, and anything that included her loving

family and girlfriends.

Wendy attended Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas and went on to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She also achieved a Master’s Degree in Strategic Communications and Leadership from Seton Hall University. Wendy had an impressive professional career. Fresh out of high school, her unique story started in the mailroom at the Boeing Company where she went on to become Communications Manager in Houston for the Space Division and in San Antonio for the Military Aircraft Division.

She spent almost 28 years with Boeing. This was a true success story of grit

and determination. She left Boeing in 2015 to become the Sr. Corporate Communications Manager for the Public Affairs Division at Zachry Construction in San Antonio, Texas.

Wendy was preceded in death by her father.

Wendy met her soulmate, Steve Parker, and they had a magical love affair for the last 15 years. Survivors include her loving husband; her sons Hayden Starr of San Antonio Texas, Gage Parker of Lubbock Texas; daughters Hannah Locklear of Tacoma, Washington and Madison Parker of Austin, Texas. Wendy was also Gigi to two grandsons Julian and Deacon Starr. She is also survived by her Mother Maureen Corron and Maureen’s companion Jim Bordelon, her brother Ryan Corron and his companion Vickie Hester, her sister Catherine Carter and husband Pat Carter, and her daughter-in-law Tori Starr. She had some of the best girlfriends who were always there for her as she was for them.

A Celebration of Life Service for Wendy will be held on January 7, 2024, at the Seguin Events Complex (Coliseum) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with remarks given at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Chris Larson, the Rev. Melvin Ernest Dojahn, age 94 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 30, 2023. Melvin was born on September 10, 1929 in Karnes City, Texas, to Herman and Annie (Retzloff ) Dojahn.

Melvin is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Mae Kutz Dojahn, his parents and his siblings, Clara Katzer, George Dojahn, Elenora Hackbarth, and Milda Schulenburg.

Survivors include his son, Ralph Dojahn and wife Kathy; daughters, Dora Schmoekel and husband, Rodney, and Dollie Mergele-Voss and husband Kevin; brother, William Dojahn and wife Julie; sister, Wilma Kutz; sister-in-law, Jane Burell; special friend, Sharon Henderson; grandchildren, Stacy Vasquez and husband Albert, Eric Schmoekel and wife Misty, Dawn Brown and husband Scott, Shelly Gembler and husband Jonathan, Derek Dojahn and wife Crystal, Cassie Mergele and Marieda Freese; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Krippner

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith.

Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football.

Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile.

Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends.

Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love.

A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

California Becomes First State Offering Health Insurance To Illegal Immigrants (Sacramento, Ca) -- California is becoming the first state to offer health insurance to all illegal immigrants. There are more than two-million undocumented immigrants in the Golden State. Experts estimate that providing health insurance for illegal immigrants will cost Californians upwards of three-billion-dollars a year.

CDC Says Flu Cases Rise In Much Of The U.S. (Atlanta, GA) -- Federal health officials say flu cases are on the rise across much of the country. According to the CDC’s weekly influenza report, there was a 16-percent jump in the number of people testing positive last week. Over a dozen states including Alabama, Georgia and New York reported “very high” levels of respiratory illness and nearly 20 other states had levels classified as “high.” The CDC noted six pediatric deaths bringing the total to 20 so far this flu season.

Dry January Underway (New York, NY) -- It’s a new year and with that comes what’s known as Dry January. During the month-long challenge, health officials are urging people to stop drinking alcohol - or at least cut back. The research firm Morning Consult says about 90-percent of those taking part in Dry January do so seeking health benefits. Seventy-three percent do so to save money. Heavy drinking is associated with hypertension, heart disease, stroke, liver damage and various cancers.

“Disagree Better” Governors Emphasize Mental Health Crisis (Washington, DC) -- Two state governors known nationally for leading a “Disagree Better” initiative are focusing on the mental health effects of social media on young people. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Utah Republican Spencer Cox and Colorado Democrat Jared Polis said social media is a major reason why suicide, depression, anxiety, and self-harm rates have been “skyrocketing” among teenagers. They both agreed that social media companies need to be held accountable. Cox is chair and Polis is vice-chair of the National Governors Association.
