Nestled on the banks of the picturesque Current River, The Landing has been a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike for over four decades From its humble beginnings to its triumphant reopening in Spring 2023, The Landing's history is a testament to resilience and community spirit.
In the spring of 1981, Tom and Della Bedell purchased Leuckel’s Landing, a modest operation equipped with 34 tubes, 50 canoes, and a twobedroom rental apartment. This marked the beginning of what would become a cherished local institution
Fast forward to the summer of 1992, when the construction of a new four-lane Highway 60 forced Leuckel’s Landing to close. Undeterred, the Bedells relocated and established The Landing on adjacent property just 100 yards downriver from the original site.
In November 1993, The Landing faced its first major challenge when heavy rains caused the Current River to breach its banks, submerging the bottom level of the facility by 16 inches. Despite this setback, the Bedells pressed on, expanding their operations.
By the spring of 1994, The Blue Heron Restaurant opened, a 6,700 square foot addition that included additional lodge rooms and a conference area. The expansion continued into the winter of 2000 with the addition of fifteen lodge rooms on the south end of the building.
The spring of 2010 saw the construction of The River Center, a state-of-the-art event center boasting 5,500 square feet of space for concerts, weddings, and conferences, along with an additional fifteen lodge units.
In April 2017, The Landing faced another historic flood, surpassing the devastation of 1993. Recordbreaking rainfall led to 37 feet of floodwater on the Current River, submerging the first two floors and causing extensive damage to the entire facility. Yet again, the community rallied, and The Landing persevered
However, in the early hours of September 15, 2021, a catastrophic fire swept through the main building, reducing it to ashes within four hours. The blaze shut down Highway 60 for most of the night, and many locals reported feeling the heat from across the river. It was a heartbreaking loss, but the spirit of The Landing remained unbroken.
On March 28, 2022, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a new chapter for The Landing In Spring 2023, The Landing reopened its doors, welcoming guests once again to enjoy its serene riverfront setting and warm hospitality.
The journey of The Landing is one of perseverance and community strength. As it continues to thrive, it remains a symbol of hope and resilience for Van Buren and its visitors.

Nestled within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Big Spring is a cherished destination for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The ongoing renovations at the Big Spring Lodge and Cabins mark a significant milestone in preserving this historic landmark while introducing modern amenities to enhance the visitor experience This extensive project, undertaken by Blinderman Construction, Inc , aims to honor the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) while ensuring the park remains a vibrant and accessible destination for generations to come.
The Big Spring Lodge and Cabins are integral parts of the Big Spring Historic District, a site steeped in history and natural beauty. The CCC, established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, played a pivotal role in the development of this area. Their efforts included constructing roads, trails, and buildings, using local materials to create structures that seamlessly blend with the natural landscape. This renovation project is a testament to the enduring legacy of the CCC The restoration involves meticulous work on both the interior and exterior of the lodge and cabins, including the removal of non-historic finishes and the repair or replacement of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Fire suppression systems are being installed, and the historic stonework is being carefully cleaned and repaired.
While preserving the historic character of Big Spring park, the renovations also introduce modern conveniences that will greatly enhance the visitor experience. One of the most notable updates is the addition of accessibility features, including ADAcompliant ramps and pathways. One cabin will be fully ADA compliant and there will an ADA lift for the boat dock. This ensures that all visitors, regardless of mobility, can enjoy the park's stunning scenery and amenities.
The cabins and lodge are being outfitted with new heating and air conditioning systems, allowing for yearround use. Modern electrical and plumbing systems are being installed to address previous issues with power outages and plumbing backups. Additionally, WiFi will be available, bringing the park into the digital age without compromising its rustic charm.
The project commenced in the summer of 2022, with Blinderman Construction, Inc taking the lead Early work focused on evaluating the structures and developing a detailed project schedule. By September 2022, significant progress was made, including the removal and restoration of doors, windows, and screens. These elements were carefully transported to an off-site facility for restoration, ensuring they are returned to their original glory.
As of Spring 2024, major strides have been made in the restoration process. The retaining walls, a crucial aspect of the park's infrastructure, have been rebuilt using a combination of original stones and modern materials
The cabins' interiors have been updated with restored woodwork, and new bathroom fixtures and lighting have been installed Even original doorknobs will be returned, with the addition of modern locks.
The renovation project is expected to be completed by the fall/winter of 2024, with a goal of having the lodge and cabins operational by the summer of 2025. This timeline may be adjusted based on the awarding of concession contracts and other factors Once completed, the park will feature a revitalized dining lodge and cabins, new hiking trails, johnboat tours, and interpretive exhibits
Visitors can look forward to a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort, all set against the backdrop of one of Missouri's most beautiful natural settings. The National Park Service's investment in this multi-million dollar project underscores its commitment to preserving the area for future generations
The upcoming centennial of the CCC's work in the park offers a perfect opportunity to celebrate the enduring impact of their efforts. As the park prepares to embark on this new chapter, both locals and visitors can look forward to a future where Big Spring Park continues to inspire and delight
For more updates on the renovation progress and to plan your visit, visit the Ozark National Scenic Riverways website
Visitors can learn more about the renovations, the work of the CCC and Big Spring by stopping at the Entrance Station located on Hwy 103. The Entrance Station will be open and staffed by National Park Service staff from 8:30 AM - 5PM until Labor Day.

The Carter County Courthouse in Van Buren, Missouri, stands as a testament to the rich history and resilience of this small community. However, this iconic structure, which had been the seat of county government since its completion in 1871, is in dire need of renovation after being severely damaged by flooding in 2017 The courthouse, a two-story wooden-frame building with a distinctive cobblestone facade, has been abandoned since the disaster, but efforts are underway to restore this piece of Van Buren's heritage.
The original courthouse was constructed in 1871 at a cost of $3,000. It received a substantial addition and a cobblestone exterior through the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1936. This historic structure has served the community for over a century, housing county offices and serving as a hub of local governance. In 2022, it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, underscoring its significance.
In May 2017, unprecedented flooding ravaged Van Buren, causing extensive damage to the courthouse. While the second floor remained largely intact, the first floor suffered significant water damage, necessitating the removal of floor tiles, ceiling materials, and interior walls down to the studs Despite these setbacks, engineers have confirmed that the building remains structurally sound, asbestos-free, and without mold. However, the elevator, which was submerged during the flood, is now inoperable and needs either repair or replacement
The Friends of the Carter County Courthouse, a dedicated non-profit organization, has taken up the mantle of preserving and restoring the courthouse Their mission is to facilitate the building’s preservation by supporting local government in planning its future use, designing renovation plans, and garnering community support. Already, the organization has secured architectural services and is working closely with the Carter County Commission to finalize renovation plans. They are currently awaiting a meeting between the Department of Natural Resources and their architect
before moving to the next steps of creating detailed plans and hiring a contractor The architect is anticipated to have preliminary plans ready by the end of the summer 2024
A significant milestone was reached in April 2023 when the Carter County Commission was awarded a $630,454 matching grant from the Missouri Department of Economic Development However, this is only part of the funding required. The total amount needed to complete the renovation is substantial, and the Friends of the Carter County Courthouse are actively fundraising to bridge the gap.
The Friends of the Carter County Courthouse believe that community involvement is crucial for the success of this project. They are engaging in planning, education, and fundraising activities to raise awareness about the courthouse’s historical and architectural significance. Through media, print materials, and historical storytelling, they aim to foster a sense of pride and collective responsibility within the community
An exciting upcoming event is the “Road Show” style silent auction at the Food Truck Festival on June 22nd This auction will feature oddities, vintage items, and other interesting goodies, providing a unique opportunity for the community to come together and support the renovation efforts.
In addition to immediate restoration efforts, the organization envisions a sustainable future for the courthouse They plan to continue their fundraising and educational endeavors to ensure the ongoing preservation of the building This historic courthouse, once restored, will not only serve as a functional public structure but also as a symbol of Van Buren’s resilience and commitment to preserving its heritage.
The restoration of the Carter County Courthouse is a community-driven effort, and everyone can contribute. Donations for the restoration can be mailed to Friends of the Carter County Courthouse, P.O. Box 116, Van Buren, MO 63965, or made online through their website. By supporting this cause, you are not only helping to restore a historic building but also preserving a piece of Van Buren’s history for future generations.
As Rebeca Pacheco, President of the Friends of the Carter County Courthouse, says, "Preserving our courthouse is about more than just bricks and mortar; it's about keeping our history alive and building a future that honors our past "
