LEARNING GOAL
Students read a passage aloud with appropriate phrasing and expression, identify where the author signals a change in voice, and explain the author's purpose. TEACHER DIRECTIONS
1. Students select a just-right passage they can read smoothly. 2. Model one clue: read a line two ways and ask which one the author intended. 3. Students mark the place where their voice should change and practice once. 4. Record the reading. Thirty to sixty seconds is plenty. 5. Students report their finding: where the voice changed, and why.
