LOOKBOOK - V&A VINTAGE FLORALS 2023

Created in collaboration with the V&A

An exquisite selection of British and French botanical illustrations, floral patterns and watercolour drawings spanning various decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Held in the V&A’s archives, these designs were originally created by some of the most eminent artists of the time, including Arts and Crafts artist L.P. Butterfield and British painter Mary Moser. The flowing lines and soft colours of these rich blooms make these artworks the perfect touch to complement the romantic feel of a vintage-inspired decor.

Name: ‘Spiers Peonies’ VAA0582

‘Holden Peony’ is based on a drawing made in the 1840s by British artist Samuel Holden, a prolific painter of exotic flora. Holden researched the majority his subjects in the private collections of Victorian plant lovers and collectors, in an era when botany was considered highly fashionable.

‘Chrysanthemums’ is based on a beautiful furnishing fabric of printed cotton produced in England at the end of the 19th century. Its fresh floral motifs are representative of the Victorian taste for decorative designs inspired by nature, as an escape from the effects of the era’s widespread industrialisation.

‘Spiers Poppies’ is based on a watercolour and pencil drawing with yellow flowers and undulating foliage that was originally designed for wallpaper, at the end of the 19th century. The pattern was created by designer and landscape painter Charlotte Horne Spiers, Victorian artist celebrated for her beautiful floral illustrations.

‘Spiers Chrysanthemums’ is based on a watercolour and pencil drawing of white flowers that was originally designed for wallpaper at the end of the 19th century. The pattern was created by designer and landscape painter Charlotte Horne Spiers, a Victorian artist celebrated for her beautiful floral illustrations.

‘Cornuaud Flowers’ is based on a pencil and watercolour design from the V&A’s Prints and Drawings archive. The delicate floral pattern was originally created by French artist J.D. Cornuaud to be reproduced on silk textiles.

Floral Chintz is based on a furnishing fabric from the V&A’s Textiles and Fashion collection. Patterns like this one were printed onto cotton using a roller with engravings and then extra colours were added. The process of roller-printing on textiles was introduced in the late 18th century and first used for dress fabrics.
