ROOTED IN THE BELIEF THAT HEALTHCARE SPACES CAN BE BOTH HEALING AND SUSTAINABLE, THE PROJECT IN MALAWI ADDRESSES HEALTHCARE CHALLENGES AMIDST UNIQUE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. THROUGH A FUSION OF HEALTHCARE, ARCHITECTURE, AND NATURE, THE DESIGN AIMS TO CREATE A HIGHLY EFFICIENT FACILITY WHILE PRIORITIZING PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH COMBINES QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE ANALYSES OF HEALTHCARE ARCHITECTURE TRAITS TO INFORM THE OPTIMAL DESIGN FOR A SURGICAL CENTER IN THE REGION. THIS GROUP PROJECT, BASED IN DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, INCORPORATES RESEARCH AND MODELING TO EXPLORE TECTONICS AND MATERIALITY, INTEGRATING EFFICIENT ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTIONS INTO THE OUTPOST. DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND EXTREME THERMAL FLUCTUATIONS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON LIFE FORMS IN A REGION WITH LITTLE WATER, PARTICULARLY DURING THE HOTTEST MONTHS WHEN TEMPERATURES EXCEEDED 100 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, THE OUTPOST INCORPORATES STRATEGIES INSPIRED BY LOCAL FLORA AND FAUNA. THESE STRATEGIES INCLUDE PARTIALLY BURYING THE STRUCTURE UNDERGROUND, CREATING SHADE WITH TREE-LIKE CANOPIES, AND UTILIZING LOCALLY-SOURCED, 3D-PRINTED SAND FOR CONSTRUCTION. BY EMPLOYING THESE PASSIVE SUSTAINABLE TECHNIQUES, THE OUTPOST EFFECTIVELY MITIGATES HARSH ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WHILE PROVIDING A SAFE AND FUNCTIONAL SPACE FOR RESEARCHERS, THUS ALIGNING WITH THE GOAL OF SUPPORTING SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION IN CHALLENGING DESERT ENVIRONMENTS.

THE COLLABORATIVE PROJECT AT THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY'S EAST FALLS CAMPUS, THE NEW DESIGN CENTER, EXEMPLIFIED A DEDICATION TO ECOLOGICAL RESPONSIBILITY, PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE, AND DESIGN SYNTHESIS. INTEGRATING ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNICAL EXPERTISE, THE TEAM METICULOUSLY RESEARCHED THE AREA AND CONDUCTED CLIMATE ANALYSES TO INFORM SUSTAINABLE DESIGN DECISIONS. HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELFARE IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT WERE CRUCIAL CONSIDERATIONS AS HVAC SYSTEMS WERE INTEGRATED AND STRUCTURAL GRIDS OPTIMIZED. SIGNIFICANT ITERATIONS WERE DONE TO OPITIMIZE THE INTENSIVE DESIGN OF THE ROOF, REQUIRING METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND INNOVATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING. THROUGH LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION, A BLUEPRINT FOR SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN WAS PRODUCED.

THE COLLABORATIVE SEMESTER-LONG PARAMETRIC PROJECT UNDERTAKEN FOR DESIGN PHILADELPHIA 2022 INVOLVED EXPERIMENTING WITH MATERIALS AND DIVERSE ITERATIVE TASKS TO ENSURE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. FOCUSED ON PLYWOOD VENEER'S ADAPTABILITY, AUGMENTED BY WOOD FOR STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT, THE PROJECT UNDERWENT RIGOROUS TESTING THROUGH RHINO AND GRASSHOPPER MODELING, SUPPORTED BY HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTATION. LASER CUTTING AND CNC MACHINING WERE USED FOR PRECISION PRODUCTION, COMPLYING TO STRICT SCHEDULES AND BUDGETS. EMPHASIZING EFFECTIVE TIME MANAGEMENT AND COHESIVE GROUP COORDINATION, THE PROJECT NAVIGATED THROUGH CONCEPTUALIZATION, MAPPING, FABRICATION, TESTING, AND FINAL CONSTRUCTION PHASES. BY CHALLENGING CONVENTIONAL PLYWOOD APPLICATIONS, OUR PAVILION EPITOMIZES INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY, PROMISING THE TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL OF EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE.

THIS GROUP PROJECT, CONDUCTED AS PART OF A REAL ESTATE COURSE, INTEGRATED KEY CONCEPTS SUCH AS SUPPLY, DEMAND, CONCEPT, AND INVESTMENT DRIVERS STUDIED IN CLASS. TEMPLE LOFTS, A DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN NORTH PHILADELPHIA, AIMS TO CONNECT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. REPURPOSING A HISTORIC INDUSTRIAL BUILDING, IT WILL HOUSE 60 APARTMENTS AND A CULINARY SPACE FOR LOCAL VENDORS AT 2150 N 10TH ST. THE PROJECT ADDRESSES DEMAND FROM THE GROWING STUDENT POPULATION AND FOSTERS COMMUNITY INTEGRATION. IT EMPHASIZES SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH ADHERENCE TO LEED OR WELL STANDARDS. FINANCIALLY, IT BENEFITS FROM ITS LOCATION IN AN OPPORTUNITY ZONE, REDUCING TAXES, AND LEVERAGING LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS. LONG-TERM PLANS INCLUDE POTENTIAL SALE TO TEMPLE UNIVERSITY OR CONTINUED INVESTMENT.
