REFLECTIONS FROM THE REHEARSAL ROOMS

The stage is set, the spotlights are on, all are ready for the musician to serenade everyone with melodies that resonate with the soul. The audience always erupt into enthusiastic cheers as they perform. In some cases, they are met with silence and sometimes, with demeaning boos. As one watching from the bleachers, it is easy to shower a performer with adulation or mete out a harsh critique even without considering the silent struggles and triumphs that unfold behind closed doors. A five-minute performance is only a fraction of greater whole. It is only a glimpse

of what the walls of the rehearsal rooms have always heard every single day on-repeat. Behind every note played lies countless hours of solitary practice, where musicians painstakingly refine their technique and internalize the emotion embedded in each melody.

For the musician-stallions, the rehearsal room is more of a refuge from the rigors of academic life, it is a conduit for self-expression. Music offers them solace in times of adversity and inspiration in moments of triumph. As they gear up for this year’s Regional Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC), they bring with them their reflections from the rehearsal rooms.

A Violinist’s Wish

Jacinth Apphia Perez, a fourth-year Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education (BCAEd) student, grew up in a family where music was deeply cherished. From a young age, piano melodies filled the air as family members sang together harmoniously. However, it was the enchanting sound of the violin that captured her heart at the age of 11. What began as a hobby blossomed into a fervent love for performing with the violin as she matured.

MARCH 2024 18 SIRMATA

Upon learning about the competition this year, Jacinth initially felt overwhelmed by the time constraints due to her demanding teaching internship. Despite the challenges, she dedicated herself to daily practice sessions, carving out even just 30 minutes each day to perfect her violin piece as the competition approached.

“As a graduating student this year, the PASUC event is a huge chance for me to create a lasting memory, especially if I win the gold. It wouldn’t just be for myself, but for the entire MMSU family,” she says.

Reflecting on past achievements, Jacinth fondly recalls winning the gold at the 2022 PASUC event, a moment that brought

great honor to her university. She made it happen once again as she clinched gold with her rendition of Gavatina by Nicanor Abelardo for the Violin Solo Competition for this year’s PASUC leaving an indelible mark that honors the support and encouragement of her family, peers, mentors, and the whole stallion community.

Despite her devotion to music, Jacinth ensures that her academic pursuits remain a priority, diligently catching up on missed classes and reserving music lessons for weekends. In the years to come, she envisions herself as a musician and educator, passionately sharing her love for the violin while bringing comfort and joy to all who encounter her music.

Strings of Passion

Another stallion-delegate for this years’ Regional PASUC is Frances Ashley Albano, also a BCAEd student at the College of Teacher Education in MMSU. Ashley is no stranger to the challenges that come with being a musician, particularly when preparing for competitions. With a passion for music coursing through her veins, she has faced numerous obstacles head-on.

One of the biggest hurdles she encountered was the tight schedule imposed for preparation. With just two weeks to ready herself, she found herself facing the daunting task of mastering her chosen piece, the Habanera Botoleña. Amidst the pressure, Ashley remained steadfast and determined to push her limits. She paints a picture of pain intertwined with fulfillment as she described the physical toll of long hours spent mastering her chosen musical instrument.

“It’s painful yet fulfilling. It pains me physically but it gives satisfaction to my burning passion that my fingers became numb while plucking the strings because I know that the harder, I play, the more beautiful sound I can produce,” Albano shares.

Despite being physically smaller than her competitors, Ashley is confident with her skills as her mastery of her instrument allows her to produce a rich, rounded sound that captivates audiences and judges alike. With this, she managed to seize the third spot for the Banduria Solo Competition fulfilling her yearning to uphold the legacy of excellence set by her coach and mentor, Riel, who was once banduria instrumentalist at the same prestigious event. As a culture and arts student and a future educator, Ashley wants to pursue her passion in music and education imparting her knowledge, particularly the fading art of rondalla, to the next generation.

Keys to Victory

Another instrumentalist coming from the house of CTE is Athena Alexis Blanco. She is a fourth year BCAEd student whose fingers danced upon the piano keys since she was a second grader. Her mother’s guidance acted as the opening chord, striking a melody of passion for music deep within her soul. From these humble beginnings, she embraced various opportunities in her town’s musical events and eventually served as the church organist at St. Augustine Parish Church during her high school years in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.

MARCH 2024 22 SIRMATA

Yet, alongside her pursuit for music, Athena faced the challenge of harmonizing her academic commitments. Juggling studies, a teaching internship, and work as a piano teacher at the Ilocos Music and Arts Center, she tirelessly navigated her demanding schedule, dedicating long hours to rehearsals for prestigious competitions like PASUC. Among the defining moments in her preparations for the culture and arts festival was the task of mastering a piece in less than a week. Despite the unsettling challenge, she approached it with courage and bravery through the support of her mentors. She believes that her musical performances are distinguished by her ability to infuse each piece with depth of emotion and confidence, which according to her, is about conveying the essence of the composition in an authentic and heartfelt manner.

Representing the university in the Piano Solo Competition was an unexpected but a deeply gratifying achievement. She was hesitant to join since she is also a member of the Nasudi Chorale competing for the same regional event. Many believed in her skills in playing the piano and Athena proved them just right as she finished strong bagging the gold medal in her category. As she nears the end of her fourth year at MMSU, she reflects with gratitude on the experiences that molded her into the musician she is today.

As a student taking up Culture and Arts Education, she finds seamless integration between her passion for music and academic pursuits. As she prepares for her future as an educator, she eagerly anticipates sharing her love of music with students, aiming to inspire the next generation of musicians. For her, music is a gift from God which should be used in forging connections and evoking emotions to those who listen.

String’sVoyageMelodic

Initiating the journey into guitar playing proved unnerving, with the initial stages marred by finger pain and frustration. Yet, amid the discomfort, the age-old adage “No pain, no gain” served as a driving force for Harold Plurad, a BCAED 3rd year student of MMSU, to move forward despite the challenges.

At an early age, Harold was raised in a household where classical music dwelled through the guidance of his devoted mother. The guitar captured his interest. The allure of mastering this instrument became his singular focus, setting him on a path of musical exploration and growth.

With firm optimism and a belief in his abilities, he took the challenge of bearing the weight of representing the university in the Classical Guitar Competition on his shoulders. Not long after, his perseverance bore fruit, securing a surprising third place and etching a memorable chapter in his college life. Though clinching bronze was an attestation to his dedication, it left a mark on his resolve to return with undying determination and a thirst for victory for the next festival events in the coming years.

Reflecting on the journey thus far, the importance of effective time management in juggling academic commitments and musical pursuits became clear. Though the accolade Harold garnered may have fallen short of gold, the pride in representing MMSU on a regional platform remains unyielding. Every setback serves as a fuel for the fire within, with eyes firmly set on the ultimate prize; and viewing the precept to always think positively and to trust yourself that you can do it.

A Band’s Subtle Plea

Embarking on their musical odyssey from a young age, each member of Riftscape found solace and joy in creating music, initially as a casual pursuit. Yet, as their love for music deepened, so did their commitment, driven by an inner passion and the fulfillment it brought. Overcoming insecurities and the pressure to impress, they learned to believe in themselves, fostering personal growth and resilience. Riftscape’s journey originated from auditions within the College of Engineering (COE). It was ignited by UNIGAMES 2023, propelling them into the limelight of their institution’s events. Notably, Riftscape is composed of members with diverse academic backgrounds ranging from Civil Engineering, represented by Vincent John P. Ramos, Bench Kenneth P. Vila, and Karl Justin D. Taasan, to Electrical Engineering, represented by Joel Stephen M. Vidad and Jacques Marlox F. Fernandez, along with Yaj Trixter R. Gambalan from Electronics Engineering, and Abigail Jemima M. Pasion from Mechanical Engineering. Through relentless practice and mutual support, they honed

their craft, creating a unique identity marked by adaptability and innovation.

Representing MMSU in PASUC is both an honor and a challenge for them, spurring to embrace the pressure and strive for excellence. Beyond the stage, music serves as a lifelong companion, guiding their personal growth and providing comfort in times of adversity. Riftscape’s aspirations in the competition enabled them to secure the fourth spot. Their achievement extends beyond triumph, aiming to embody camaraderie and resilience, inspiring hope through their music.

While their future plans may remain fluid amidst academic pursuits, the band remains steadfast in their commitment to inspiring others and trusting in the journey that lies ahead. As a band committed to connecting with the audience, Riftscape’s Vocalist, Abigail Jemima M. Pasion instilled her profound sense of musical exploration.

“We’d like to look into ourselves more, to enjoy the stage while we last, and to embed into every soul that hears our music,” she asserted.

Time bends and twists within every stallion musician’s rehearsal space, for here, it’s not about the minutes ticking by but about the depth of expression, the raw emotion poured into each note. This becomes a sanctuary where melodies dance and creativity thrive, thus, each transcends the ordinary and ignite sparks of inspiration. Each chord struck and lyric sung serves as a vision knitted into every moment spent in the rehearsals.

MARCH 2024 28 SIRMATA

And when the time comes to step onto the stage, this haven stands as a beacon of opportunity, offering a platform for each of them to share their soul-stirring renditions to the crowd. For even just a second, music becomes more than notes—it turns out as a journey, an eyewitness to the boundless power of human expression. This space surpasses everything surreal; for it pulses with a communal spirit that always blossoms and never withers, where dreams take flight and never falter; because music is very much alive in every beat, every lyric, and every soulful melody.

As the battles for the musical instruments solo and live band comes to a close for the culture and arts festivals, the MMSU community celebrates the achievements of its delegates, both the victorious and the valiantly defeated ones. After all what is seen in the stage is always the fruition of what has been labored in the rehearsal rooms.
