What Happens When Refugees Arrive at the Settlement South Sudanese refugees arriving in Uganda face immense hardship as they have been displaced by war, separated from family, and burdened by trauma. Upon arrival, refugees are processed by the Ugandan government and international aid organizations, which provide them with land, food rations, and basic resources; however, many still struggle to meet their daily needs and find lasting stability. This is where Seed Effect steps in, with Christ-centered economic empowerment that helps refugees rebuild their lives through savings groups, financial training, and spiritual and emotional support. The heart of Seed Effect’s work lies in providing long-term economic opportunities and solutions that empower individuals to provide for themselves and their families. Through participation in our groups, many individuals have started successful businesses, sent their children to school, and improved their living conditions, not only regaining financial independence but also regaining their sense of selfworth and hope for the future. Texans on Mission Partnership Update In the first year of our two-year partnership, we successfully launched 120 savings groups in Uganda’s Omoro District at Texans on Mission water well installations, surpassing our goal of establishing 60 groups. This collaboration has empowered many Seed Effect members to pursue financial stability and transform their lives while also providing access to clean water.

From poultry farming and small-scale businesses to livestock and agricultural investments, numerous member stories showcase how access to savings, loans, and training empowers their communities to build resilient, self-sustaining livelihoods.

Through the combined impact of Seed Effect’s economic empowerment program and Texans on Mission’s Health and Water Project, families are not only surviving but also thriving with renewed hope and purpose. Read more here.

Why Asset Preservation Matters: Protecting a Family’s Future In places like Northern Uganda and South Sudan, where a single emergency can force families to sell essential income-generating assets to survive, Seed Effect’s savings and loan groups offer a vital alternative. Asset preservation helps families retain critical resources, such as livestock, sewing machines, or farmland. Through access to savings, emergency funds, and loans, members are empowered to respond to crises without sacrificing their future. This kind of stability preserves dignity, builds resilience, and ensures families can continue working toward long-term goals, protecting not only their assets but also their family’s quality of life.

Asset preservation allows a mother to keep her sewing machine and continue earning an income. It allows a father to retain his livestock and pass on financial security to his children. It allows families to weather the storms of life without falling deeper into poverty. In a fragile context, where a single setback can mean years of recovery, preserving assets is preserving hope. Meet Rose After fleeing war in South Sudan, Rose Fekira arrived at Bidibidi Refugee Settlement with seven biological children and four additional dependents, starting over with nothing.

Struggling to survive through petty trade, she was inspired by others in Seed Effect savings groups and joined the “God With Us” group. She quickly stepped into leadership as the group’s money counter—despite never having attended school. In her first savings cycle, she saved 300,000 UGX, and used funds to pay school fees, buy medicine, and launch a small footwear business. With continued saving and access to four loans totaling over 1.3 million UGX, she expanded her business and now provides for her family with stability and dignity.

“As I continue saving, now I am able to pay my children’s school fees...

Before I got this business & settled in the savings group, my mind was not at peace. I even thought about leaving my children behind to go back to South Sudan, but it was hard. However, after joining the savings group, I’m really proud because the savings have strengthened me.”

Rose now teaches others how to start businesses, inspires relatives and friends to join savings & loan groups, and supports her neighbors during hard times.
