OVERVIEW OF THE YEAR Why has this year gone in January, February, and December?

2023 has been a year of building on the foundations being put in place in 2022. Last year’s Christmas do was the first with us for about 85% of the company, meaning we finally got the togetherness and camaraderie it brings. For me, it felt like a hard reset on the office culture and general atmosphere. I had a moment of reflection and sat beach-side with 100 or so of us, a mix of ages, departments and backgrounds and realised this is actually why we do this.

We continued to bolster our restructured ranks with a rigorous recruitment drive plus some internal progression. UA92 students completed a work experience programme with us, learning from all areas of the organisation. Yorkshire Insider once again held their Most Exciting Companies event in our Leeds’ Ambler Club in the same week Manchester’s Regency Club hosted a sold-out panel event with Mengarie, Roxy Ball Room, North Brewing Co. and Sacha Lord. Later in the year, a specialist graduate programme with collaborative ICAEW sessions, branding and marketing strategies and specialist training was provided for some of our latest joiners.

In April, the whole Sedulo Group descended upon Liverpool for the annual conference. Stunning views of the city from the Spine building were the setting for a morning outlining the group’s three-year plan for growth, a company rebrand and some new internal initiatives. We had speakers from across the organisation who all demonstrated the commitment Sedulo is making to its future. Liverpool’s Wilson Club was transformed into a futuristic festival complete with mirror dancers, an outdoor terrace kitchen, and the infamous spin-the-wheel game with top prizes. Krystal Roxx headlined the evening, capping off a celebration of all things Sedulo.

Launching the Sedulo Foundation raised the bar regarding giving back together with the inaugural fundraiser headlined by Shola Ama, Liberty X and Gok Wan. The team put on a flawless display for the many Sedulo clients and team in attendance, including boxers David Haye, Josh Warrington and Ebanie Bridges. The Foundation formalises our approach to charity and allows us to grow what we do and who we help. Occasions like this illustrate growth and show our capability when everyone pulls in the same direction. There will be more opportunities to get involved in the Foundation next year, and I encourage everyone to use their volunteer days; it is some of the most rewarding things you will ever do!

Group ambassador Kevin Sinfield pushed friend and former teammate Rob Burrows around the Leeds Marathon, now named after him, in another incredible feat of endurance and friendship; he added to this in November with seven ultramarathons in seven cities in seven days.

A true inspiration to us all, and it is incredible that we have this guy on our side.

Paul’s new podcast, “The Lifecast”, became a regular feature on Andy Grant’s Leg It channel. Themes such as alcohol, parenting, goal setting and much more are discussed in 30-minute sessions; check it out!

We sponsored the British Diversity Awards in March, celebrating community projects and initiatives while supporting the Rainbow Honours in May. We once again celebrated pride across our offices, but this time, our team members shared stories of their lived experiences, including workshops for creating a more inclusive culture. Our D&I committee arranged deaf awareness workshops, highlighting lesser thought-of experiences of people’s day-to-day and capping off Black History Month with a celebration of African and Caribbean heritage within our team. Seeing how the committee has developed this year has been wonderful and is an aspect of Sedulo we should all be very proud of. Please let us know what you want from our D&I committee as we look to build a more equitable and inclusive organisation.

Since the start of the year, we worked on our emissions and set out a plan to become more sustainable. We recorded our carbon output and successfully offset our emissions for the year. With the help of People & Culture, we were able to implement a sustainability day for every team member. Twenty of us used this sustainability day to plant

trees in Buxton; 2000 trees for the first phase of Sedulo Forest. Luckily, the weather was clear for us, and after an hour of chasing escaped sheep back into a nearby field, we made a quick stop at a country pub for some food. This was described as one of the best team-building experiences, and we have put teams in place in each city to organise similar days out next year.

Our Sedulo Wealth team adopted its own bespoke visual identity and branding, allowing for a more considered experience for clients. This demonstrates how big the firm has gotten but still has the ability to pivot into new directions when needed.

The core Sedulo brand received the most significant overhaul in its visual identity with the rollout of new brand guidelines. Expect to see more of this as we continue to unify all brands under the Sedulo Group with the same care and attention to ensure all facets of the group work together but can also stand independently.

We focussed on people with a series of mental-health workshops in our offices, providing a platform to discuss further training, open and honest work culture and the formation of a new committee dedicated to this. Around this, we continued the well-being programme, delivering everything from yoga, football, and rock climbing to massages, breathing work, and financial advice.

Having fun together has never been better than in 2023, as our outdoor spaces hosted numerous social events over the summer with cocktails, live music, and food pop-ups, giving you all the opportunity to entertain clients. The desire from outside of the events team to host new experiences and try new things has been precisely what we need.

Our biggest-ever Back-to-school appeal helped schools and charities nationwide, including the Ukrainian refugees from the Big Help Project.

Over 750 children received £45 worth of school equipment, PE kits and food vouchers.

The Period Poverty campaign was established with around 40 young girls receiving yearly supplies of sanitary products. Funds for this initiative were raised at the annual Empowered Women event, now in its third iteration. The panel celebrated female leaders, including Claire Sofield, MD from Four Recruitment, BBC radio presenter Ngunan Adamu and business leader Seema Malhotra. The campaign is a key growth area for the Foundation in 2024.

The first Sedulo Foundation Golf Day took place at Carden Park. A mix of clients, associates and staff played a full round of golf with specific challenges at sponsored holes, raising thousands for the Foundation.

The day ended with trophy presentations and a BBQ in lovely sunny weather.

Another year of men’s mental health charity, Andy’s Man Club, utilising our facilities with additional support given when 14 of our team members climbed the Yorkshire three-peaks, following a Yorkshire-themed quiz earlier in the year to raise money for the group. Other charities, such as Love Jasmine, Shelter and Lifeshare, have also utilised our offices for meetings and their fundraising activities this year, a brilliant perk we are able to offer.

For the 2023/24 season, we are the proud front-of-shirt sponsor for Marine FC women. A reasonably new team within the football club boosted by our support have competed in the Liverpool women’s league and the FA Cup. We were short-sponsors for Bradford Bulls and took up sponsorship opportunities at Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds Rhinos and Stockport County!

Our most ambitious Toy Appeal campaign ended with Reverse Grotto events in each city. This is the first since becoming a foundation, and it was a step up in terms of operation. Seeing so many team members get involved has been great, as the project is no easy feat. Plans are already being put in place to exceed this year’s achievement.

I said last year felt like a reset after COVID and a period of figuring out who we wanted to be. The vision is clear now, and we know what

organisation we are heading towards being. It can be difficult to recognise all we achieve in 12 months when we are head-down doing the work. Only when writing this, do I genuinely appreciate the output of nearly 200 individuals aligned to one goal.

Whatever you do over the next few weeks, I hope it’s a happy, safe time to celebrate how you’ve grown this year.

MESSAGE FROM PAUL, SED Hello Everybody, 2023 could well turn out to be the most defining year to date. The seeds were sown coming out of COVID, about the type of organisation we aim to be for the future. This year, we started to see ‘green shoots’ rise from the surface in an eventful but progressive year.

As far back as 2021, we talked about the concept of a Stage 5 organisation as depicted in the infamous book ‘The Tribal Leadership’ and referred to by Chicago Bulls legendary coach Phil Jackson during the popular Netflix series ‘The Last Dance.’ Those who have been here since then will remember we gave out Phil’s book ‘Eleven Rings’ during the 2021 ‘virtual’ conference!

Whilst there are very few Stage 5 organisations in corporate settings, we aim to be one of them.

“Stage 5: Life is Great – As good as Stage 4 can be, there is still room to go higher. Stage 5 is occupied by a select few organisations that are so innovative that they have created entirely new market opportunities, allowing them to embark on history-making projects. “These are the tribes that end up changing the world. Not surprisingly, only two per cent of organisations reach this lofty position.”

We continue to aim for ‘excellence as default’, and we have made huge strides this year towards this goal.

Without a doubt, the biggest challenge this year was the execution of the re-organisation that started in October 2022.

This involved changing the centralised service structure we had, bringing in a new management team, new tiers, and new people and creating a localised structure with national expertise for us to build a consultancy firm of the future.

Change is never easy, and it has been with its challenges, but we are an organisation that accepts short-term pain for longer-term benefits. The commitment from the team this year to embrace ‘the new’ and ‘do the right thing’, regardless of the pain, has been exemplary.

I think we are a few more hires from completing this project, and we are probably 85-90% where we need to be; this allows for a more consistent year in 2024.

‘Trust the Process’ has been a phrase used constantly within the firm; I refer to it in almost all times of adversity; I have called on it often this year. On reflection it has served its purpose because a lot of progress has been achieved in the past 12 months.

Looking back on 2023, we:

Huge strides have been made here.

Our year-end is October, in October 2022 we invoiced £1.02m for the month, delivered from 169 people (£6k per employee). In October 2023 we invoiced £1.24m (22% growth), on 175 team members (£7k per employee).

In the last 3 years our revenue per employee has gone from £65k in 2021, to £81k in 2022 and £85k in 2023- our aim is to get closer towards £100k over the next few years.

There are a number of reasons for this, some that were promised during the conference of 2021, 2022 and 2023.

All of this is very pleasing and paves the way for further continuous improvements during 2024.

For our year ended October 2023 we expect revenues to be circa £14.5m, which is a modest increase on October 2022 turnover of £13m.

It is the run rate that is important though, up 22% in the final month, because the early part of the financial year was very much a build project.

In 2019 we made a 3 year plan to double in size over the 3 years, we were at £6.5m in revenues at the time it was accomplished.

Now we have a plan to double in size again over the next 3 years to 2026.

For the 2nd year in succession, I am most pleased with the recruitment strategy of the firm.

What we had and then built on in 2022, we have added further to, with the recruits of 2023. We have, without any doubt, the best group of people today than we have ever had in the history of the firm. We will continue this progress in 2024.

Whilst we must continue to work hard on the here and now, we cannot neglect the future. I think that the future is combining great people with great technology. This year we started the build of our own technologies, and we have a platform ready to go live for resale in early 2024. It will be launched with a suite of tools to help fast-growing businesses, which include the Staff Happiness Score and the Client Happiness Score. We obviously use both, and the scores this year have gone from strength to strength, and are another key set of metrics to measure along with the financial ones above.

Finally, we have just found out we have been awarded a Top 70 position in the national accounting league table (there are 38,000 registered accountant and tax advisors), and I am delighted we have also just been awarded Investors In People GOLD. Elsewhere across the Group, Be The Standard, our internal leadership club, increased revenue throughout the year to c£300k, but it also created a further £300,000 of core revenue for the business from its members. Not to mention the speakers we managed to bring along, including Steven Gerrard, Rebecca Adlington and 2 of my all-time favourite ever speakers, Barry Hearn and Gerald Ratner.

Our other investments IGD SPORT, Perfect Getaways and HMN24 all had record years.

ULO FOUNDING PARTNER GIVING BACK TOGETHER Around 7 years ago, I sat with Cathryn Wright, our now Chief Operation Officer, and trying to persuade her to join us, explained once we built a financial success story, we would leverage this to help our communities.

I was very proud therefore that this year we were able to finally, officially launch The Sedulo Foundation, aimed at giving all children equal opportunities. We had our inaugural dinner at the Hilton Hotel, Manchester in June, which was a sell out, attended by some major stars from TV and Sport, and raised net proceeds of over £125,000 on the evening. Remember -Trust the Process, even if it takes 7 years!

the moment. In the next few years, we will probably need two to achieve our doubling in size ambition.

For the first time ever in our product offering, technology will play a part; it will be interesting to see how we launch these new products – as I said earlier, the future of our organisation and the industry, is the combination of the best people with great technology.

I would like to thank you all for your dedication, commitment to change, and positive energy this year. Transitional years are not the easiest ones, but they are the most beneficial down the line; these have been some of the most progressive yet hardworking years we have ever had.

As ever in the summer, we did our ‘Back to School’ campaign, providing 1,000 children with over £30,000 worth of home-schooling equipment and Nando’s food vouchers for underprivileged children.

I would like to wish you and your families all a Happy Xmas and New Year, and I hope you all have a healthy and prosperous 2024! The future looks very bright next year on the back of the build achieved during this one.

Our Xmas toy appeal provided almost 15,000 presents. We have also provided nearly £15,000 of Xmas dinner vouchers for the family to enjoy, not just the morning, but the afternoon together.

We brought in our third campaign this year, which included providing Period Poverty packs for girls aged 11-16 who cannot afford period products. We aim to provide it for every year they are in school; so far we have just over 50 girls signed up for the campaign, and we will push this further in 2024.

For the boys, we introduced hygiene packs into the BTS campaign, providing children with the necessary tools to look after themselves for the school year.

As ever, we contributed to a number of other charitable events with direct donations throughout the year.

Finally, but not least! We built our very own Sedulo Forest.

We can’t give back to communities without looking after our planet, we managed to measure, and reduce our carbon output, and by the end of the year, we were carbon neutral due to offsetting.

We purchased some forestry in Uruguay, but in Sedulo style, it felt like this wasn’t enough. In November, we found three acres of land and planted 2,000 trees (qualifying for a forest!) in rural Derbyshire. It is the first of many similar initiatives we will look to do over the coming years.

HAVING FUN TOGETHER Our 2022 Conference finished with a festival with 5ive and Phatts & I say often “Life is too short not to have fun”, I know I don’t always look like I am having fun – but I do try!

We hosted over 100 events this year within the firm, and our conference was the best yet, I thought, held in Liverpool with a futuristic theme.

We attended all sorts of external events with clients, not least our La Cala Xmas Party, where almost 150 people made the trip. It was by far the most take up, which highlights the team camaraderie that we are building here.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR 2024?

We will continue to grow, perhaps faster than in 2023 because we have done the groundwork for that. We expect to go from £14.5 this year to £18m in 2024.

SETTING OUR CARBON NEUTRAL OBJECTIVES

We enlisted the help of sustainability platform Zellar to help us record our emissions through scopes 1, 2 & 3 and implement processes to reduce them.

To identify areas for improving our operating practises, we must achieve two main goals to help ensure a sustainable future.

1. Accurately record our emissions by the end of 2023.

2. Produce an annual sustainability report released in December 2023.

We can only offset emissions once we understand how to reduce and maintain our carbon output. Producing a yearly impact report creates accountability and allows us to be transparent in our messaging.

NOV 2022

ESTABLISHING AN IN-HOUSE SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE FOR POSITIVE CHANGE UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF BUSINESS TRAVEL ON BECOMING CARBON NEUTRAL We can report on the carbon produced by business travel using internal expense data, reported annually in December. Since 2019 and accelerated by the 2020 lockdown, video calls have become commonplace for cross-office meetings, negating the need to travel.

ESTABLISHING A SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE We formed a sustainability committee of people who directly impact each of the three scopes and volunteers who are committed to helping build a sustainable business.

We are responsible for how our team travels to work from an emissions perspective. We conduct an annual commute survey to record the distance travelled and method of travel for each team member.

With this data, we can assess the feasibility of an electric-car scheme to the already implemented bike-to-work and rail-pass schemes.

To create further accountability, we have pledged with the SME Climate Hub and become one of Zellar’s first 50 in Manchester to commit to sustainability.

A committee allows us to create internal accountability and report to the broader business.

DECEMBER 22 | SCOPE 1 & 2 DECEMBER 22 | EMPLOYEE EMISSIONS

PLEDGING TO BECOME ONE OF MANCHESTER’S FIRST 50 CARBON NEUTRAL BUSINESSES

Using historic energy supplier invoices, we measured each office’s energy consumption for 2021 and 2022. With 2 additional data sets to compare, we can identify trends when adding energy consumption to our overall emissions total for 2023.

With this information, we learnt how opening new offices and expanding our team had impacted emission output, allowing us to make further forecasts for growth.

DECEMBER 22 | PROGRESS Recording all of our Scope 2 emissions built a better picture of our impact on the environment. Whilst our Leeds and London offices used sustainable providers and our Liverpool used an Ofgen-compliant supplier, our Manchester office needed to switch. When the switch was confirmed, Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutral status is recognised as long as suppliers remain.

OFFSETTING OUR EMISSIONS THROUGH VERRA-CERTIFIED PROJECTS

AUGUST 23 | SUSTAINABILITY DAYS AUGUST 23 | SUSTAINABILITY POLICY A sustainability policy is essential for recording our official stance on sustainability. It provides team members, clients and suppliers with clarity on our position moving forward with sustainability.

As part of developing our culture and in response to the passion demonstrated by our team members, we have introduced a sustainability day to be taken in addition to annual leave.

Each team member can dedicate a day to a sustainability, biodiversity or conservation cause, equating to over 1,200 hours per year.

We have identified numerous projects close to our office locations and arranged opportunities for the team to use these days.

AUGUST 23 | OFFSETTING

AUGUST 2023 | CARL-BON We quickly recognised that we needed to address sustainability from a cultural perspective within the office inline with our three pillars. We get results together. We give back together. We have fun together. Be sustainable together.

Carl-bon Neutral is our in-house sustainability chatbot. The bot reminds the team of their energy usage and sends reminders to turn off monitors, lights and temperature controls when not in use. It is also a place for our team to engage with the project and learn more. We are developing this tool with a vision to give it more autonomy using AI.

Ultimately, until we achieve true carbon net zero, we must offset the emissions we produce. For 2023, we have supported the conversion of land in the east of Uruguay expected to be used for long-lived products, ensuring continued carbon storage that is re-planted after felling providing continuous rotations of carbon capture. Only 33% of the world’s timber comes from sustainable sources – projects such as this are vital to protecting old-growth forests.

As this is our first year recording emissions, we have overestimated our impact to cover any inaccuracies in our data.

We recognise that we need to do more than maintain projects currently active.

Our team is looking into new projects to ensure more carbon is removed from our environment as we aim for a net negative impact.

AUG 2022

BECOMING SCOPE 1 AND 2 CARBON NEUTRAL AUGUST 23 | SCOPE 1 & 2 NEUTRAL When officially switching energy provider in Manchester, it meant, across the group, our energy consumption emissions. This ensures an overall lower carbon output for 2024 onwards and allows us to focus on the project’s more challenging scope 3 aspects.

MAY 23 | LED LIGHTS

Every MB stored on-site generates around 20 Grams of CO2. Moving to a cloud-based solution reduces a significant impact on our company emissions.

Although using suppliers compliant with the GHG Protocol, we must be mindful of the energy we use from the sustainable market. Our primary consumer is lighting, so a complete replacement to LED means we have a much more efficiently operated workplace.

APRIL 23 | SUPPLY CHAIN It is crucial to track the weights and materials of our inbound supply chain.

We track purchases through our PO system, and identifying our top 10 suppliers provided a breakdown of what we buy and through which departments.

APRIL 23 | RECYCLING JANUARY 23 | REVIEW PROGRESS Using the Zellar platform, we can track our progress and complete the tasks they suggest. This includes moving all our servers to a cloud-based provider, reviewing our banking, web-hosting and insurance platforms, and contacting a full office sustainability check.

Making this process more efficient and accurate is a focus for us as a business.

After reviewing our recycling capabilities across our sites, we understood some changes we needed to make to maximise our efficiency, including switching our waste management provider in Manchester.

Other than food waste, we have full recycling capability nationwide. We constantly look at ways to minimise food waste through sharing apps and ordering exact amounts when providing food.

Day 3: To bring the retreat to end, the Be the Standard group took a team picture to remember the trip and completed meaningful self-reflection, goal-setting, and bonding.

Day 2: Then headed to Auschwitz-Birkenau for another guided tour.

Day 1: The Be the Standard group went to a life-changing trip to Krakow, filled with history and self-reflection.

Day 1: The group went for a 45-minute walk through the beautiful Old Town to Schindler’s Factory.

Day 2: To unwind after a powerful day, the group had two inspiring Be the Standard talks, one from the founder of NXT45, Mike Bates, and another from the legendary champion boxer, David Haye, who joined us for the whole trip.

Day 3: The retreat was all about adrenaline. The group travelled to a remote location where they had the opportunity to drive through an off-road woodland on quad bikes!

Day 3: Following from the quad bikes, the group then made their way to a shooting range for another adrenaline-fuelled activity.

Bartfields Consortium save Leeds United

B

artfields partner, Gerald Krasner led the consortium of local businessmen which successfully took over the club. Krasner's reign witnessed the relegation of Leeds United from the English Premier League when a 3-3 draw against Charlton Athletic wasn't enough to beat the drop to the newly re-branded Coca-Cola Championship.

The players faced the prospect that their wages might not be paid from one month to the next, as Leeds United seemed on the verge of terminal liquidation.

In the event under Krasner's stewardship Leeds United managed to

out for their now clearly unrepayable debts, large amounts of which had to be effectively written off by the club's debts as they had been taken out in the name of the now insolvent LUFC plc.

Krasner and his consortium eventually sold the club to former Chelsea supremo Ken Bates, a flamboyant character who had himself recently sold Chelsea FC to billionaire Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea had reportedly been carrying similar levels of debt to Leeds before Abramovich transformed the west London team into a strong force in English football. Bates had been in the market to invest after being ousted

Abramovich.

By this time, and perhaps to his credit, Krasner's essential mission, reducing the club's massive debts to acceptable levels, was now accomplished. Like his predecessor Professor McKenzie, his appointment and the consortium he led, were little more than a stop-gap solution.

Krasner's personality and background were never that of the traditional ’footballing chairman’.

His consortium lacked the financial muscle for the re-investment needed in the team to prevent it from slipping further down the footballing divisions. Owing to these realities, he

It is doubtful that supporters of Leeds United will ever look back on the "Krasner era" with much fondness.

Our Leeds-based home, the Ambler Club, opens.

The acquisition of the Leeds-based Bartfields also saw the relocation of their team, plus new recruits, to the iconic St. Paul’s House in Leeds city centre. Our Leeds home, the Ambler Club, overlooks the green Park Square area and boasts numerous themed meeting rooms including the chocolatefilled Cadbury’s Suite and Fred Perry Suite complete with table tennis.
