Letter from the Director

Throughout the Program Guide, you will find activities, programs, and events that will impact lives and build community pride! We strive to accomplish our mission by offering something for everyone. Whether it is a stroll through one of our parks, an adventure on the new Hubbard Park Playground, a visit to the dog park, or a day spent in the Heckart Community Center, I hope you will find something that engages and challenges you to live a healthier, happier, more rounded life.

As we head into 2023, our department is energized and looking forward to continuing to meet the needs of our growing, vibrant community. With over 300 acres of utilized park land, we strive to maintain our parks and facilities, and be sure that we are doing our best to stay on top of facilities as they age and continue to plan for the future. As we have been very clear, our outdoor pools are close to the end of their lifespan. Honestly, 20 years is typically the most you will get out of outdoor pools. Our pools have both surpassed that, thanks to the support of this community and the staff that maintains and operates them. With that being said, you will begin to hear and see that we will be moving forward with plans to design and build ONE new Outdoor Aquatic facility with hopes that this facility is on the east side of town. Once a location is set we will be asking for community engagement on the design and amenities that our included in the Aquatic Facility, we want to hear what you want. This will be a process, but the goal is to have a new Aquatic Facility opened Memorial Day weekend of 2025, and we look forward to keeping you in the loop each step of the way.

The Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department oversees over 300 acres of park land, Convention Hall, and the Heckart Community Center, as well as maintaining 7 parks: Liberty, Centennial, Clover Dell, Hubbard, Housel, Katy, and Vermont Park. A wide array of sports, recreation activities, lessons, and special events are available for all area citizens.

As always, if you have ideas, concerns, or would like to chat, please feel free to reach out. I would love to hear what you have to say regarding parks, recreation, and wellness here in Sedalia! Have FUN out there and create memories that will last a lifetime!

HECKART COMMUNITY CENTER HOURS OF OPERATION

Monday-Friday: 5am - 9pm

Saturday: 7am - 7pm

Sunday: 10am - 7pm

In 1948, The Heckart Family made their home here in Sedalia, established their family business, The Heckart Funeral Home and became pillars of the community. They believed their success as a family business was in large part because the community trusted in them and supported them. Because of the support of the community, it was their philosophy that they in return give back to those that had supported them for so many years. Sue carried on the family’s motto of “We Care, We Share, We Love.” Being a strong business woman, community leader, and philanthropist, Sue wanted nothing more than to bring her parents’ dream of a community center to the people of Sedalia.

To honor the legacy of her parents, Del & Stella, Sue believed that the community deserved a place where everyone can come together to share experiences and create memories while improving the quality of life for all. It was with her generous multi-million dollar donation that allowed the Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department the ability to present a 1/8 cent sales tax to help build a Community Center. The community overwhelmingly responded with an 80% YES vote.

Sue knows and values the importance of Parks and Recreation and trusts Sedalia Parks & Recreation to honor her parent’s legacy with this outstanding facility that will forever impact the Community of Sedalia.

The Heckart Community Center will be closed on the following holidays: Easter, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The Heckart Community Center may have modified hours of operation for other observed holidays.

In addition, the Heckart Community Center may have modified hours of operation in cases of inclement weather and/or modified hours for maintenance, up to and including facility closure.

Session 3 - July 31-August 10 (Register by July 25)

Meets Monday - Thursday at Liberty Pool

$40 per person per session.

Register online at www.sedaliaparks.com, in person at the HCC, or by calling the office at 660-826-4930.

• Parent Involvement: An adult is required to get in the water for Water Babies and Pre-school swim. If more than one child in the family is registered there needs to be an adult for each child.

• Low Enrollment: Classes not making the minimum enrollment may be cancelled. Participants may be offered a spot in another class time, depending on availability.

• Age Considerations: If the child is outside of the recommended age group you will need to call to register. Online registration will not give you an option of registering for the correct class. If your child is more than a year outside of the recommended age for their correct level, group

lessons may not be the best option for them.

• Weather considerations: In case of dangerous weather conditions classes may move to HCC or be cancelled. If the weather is cool, classes may be moved to HCC, or if held at Liberty Pool swimmers may be in the water for a limited amount of time. If classes move or are cancelled SPR will send out a TextCaster with information about your swim class. Sign up for TextCaster on our website www.sedaliaparks.com!

• Health Requirement: If your child is sick, they may not enter the water for two weeks after the last episode of diarrhea. Call HCC with questions about transfers and refunds.
