Soon the holiday hustle and bustle will be here, and we will look forward to a new year filled with health, personal achievements, and more great memories This new season also brings the common feeling of loneliness and a sense of lethargy This isolation takes a toll on our mental health and overall wellbeing. In the months ahead we must be ready to combat the winter doldrums that can set in, by making sure we are staying active and social Here in Sedalia, we are fortunate to have the Heckart Community Center, a place for the face-to-face opportunities that help build our social networks, and pursue healthier lives, filled with amazing staff and community members brought together by a common theme of community and health. Think back to last July and our Parks & Rec Month theme "Where You Belong" Those words hold true not just for a month out of the year, but for the countless hours staff put in year after year to create programs, classes, and activities for our community.
Sedalia Parks & Recreation staff, programs, and facilities are powerful allies in enhancing your wellbeing, offering a unique blend of physical fitness and social support that can alleviate loneliness and strengthen community bonds. This is the essential work that ensures everyone can enjoy the lifesaving and life-changing benefits of physical fitness, social interaction and togetherness offered by Parks and Recreation
Our Community Center creates a stronger community by promoting regular social interaction, and supporting happier, more connected lives. Providing the spaces where people pursue their physical fitness goals and find the social support necessary for mental health and wellbeing We work and strive to unite our community
The Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department oversees over 300 acres of park land, Convention Hall, and the Heckart Community Center, as well as maintaining seven parks: Liberty, Centennial, Clover Dell, Hubbard, Housel, Katy, and Vermont Park. A wide array of sports, recreation activities, lessons, and special events are available for all area citizens.
I couldn’t be more proud of the work we accomplished in 2024 with the support of our members and partners From listening to seniors telling us how much the Heckart has improved their quality of life, to watching young families make new friends at Tiny Tots. Together we are growing our community, and the work we’ve done together ensures that Sedalia Parks & Recreation is the place Where You Belong.

In 1948, The Heckart Family made their home here in Sedalia, established their family business, The Heckart Funeral Home, and became pillars of the community They believed their success as a family business was in large part because the community trusted in them and supported them. Because of the support of the community, it was their philosophy that they in return give back to those that had supported them for so many years. Sue carried on the family’s motto of “We Care, We Share, We Love ” Being a strong business woman, community leader, and philanthropist, Sue wanted nothing more than to bring her parents’ dream of a community center to the people of Sedalia
To honor the legacy of her parents, Del and Stella ,Sue believed that the community deserved a place where everyone can come together to share experiences and create memories while improving the quality of life for all It was with her generous multi-million dollar donation that allowed the Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department the ability to present a 1/8 cent sales tax to help build a Community Center The community overwhelmingly responded with an 80% YES, YES vote.
Sue knows and values the importance of Parks and Recreation and trusts Sedalia Parks & Recreation to honor her parent’s legacy with this outstanding facility that will forever impact the community of Sedalia. Thank you Sue Heckart for your generous gift in honor of your parents Del and Stella Heckart!
