About Us Mission Statement The Sedalia Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing quality programs, facilities, and services that will enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Sedalia and the surrounding communities.

The Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department oversees over 300 acres of park land, Convention Hall, and the Heckart Community Center, as well as maintaining 7 parks: Centennial, Clover Dell, Housel, Hubbard, Katy, Liberty, and Vermont Park. A wide array of sports, recreation activities, lessons, and special events are available for all area citizens.

In 1948, The Heckart Family made their home here in Sedalia, established their family business, The Heckart Funeral Home, and became pillars of the community. They believed their success as a family business was in large part because the community trusted in them and supported them. Because of the support of the community, it was their philosophy that they in return give back to those that had supported them for so many years. Sue carried on the family’s motto of “We Care, We Share, We Love.” Being a strong business woman, community leader, and philanthropist, Sue wanted nothing more than to bring her parents’ dream of a community center to the people of Sedalia.

To honor the legacy of her parents, Del & Stella ,Sue believed that the community deserved a place where everyone can come together to share experiences and create memories while improving the quality of life for all. It was with her generous multi-million dollar donation that allowed the Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department the ability to present a 1/8 cent sales tax to help build a Community Center. The community overwhelmingly responded with an 80% YES, YES vote. Sue knows and values the importance of Parks and Recreation and trusts Sedalia Parks & Recreation to honor her parent’s legacy with this outstanding facility that will forever impact the Community of Sedalia. Thank you Sue Heckart for your generous gift in honor of your parents Del and Stella Heckart!

Heckart Community Center Membership Fees Youth: Any person 18 or younger. Senior: Any person age 60 or older. Adult: Any person age 19 to 59. Family: Family membership is a maximum of 5 members with no more than 2 adults.

All people must be residing under the same household (proof required). Additional adults or children may be added onto the membership at the advertised rates for that membership type. Adult(s) added onto the membership must show proof of same residency to be on the membership. Family rate per month: $10 per additional child Family annual rate: $100 per additional child. Families with special needs members may be added to a family membership as approved by the Sedalia Parks and Recreation Director. Program Cancellations and Refunds Sedalia Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel any class or program which does not meet the minimum required participants. Participant may transfer payment to another class or program, receive a credit for a later class/program, or refund. Full-time staff will administer program refunds that are fair and consistent with the policies of the Sedalia Parks and Recreation department and do not jeopardize the financial well-being of the program. Please see SPR Staff for refund policies.

Lost and Found Policy Sedalia Parks and Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Any item of value (not broken, damaged, unuseable, etc.) left at any of Sedalia Parks and Recreation parks, facilities, recreation program sites, and aquatic centers which are found by parks and recreation staff shall be picked up and kept to return to the owner. All found items will be taken to Heckart Community Center kept for a minimum of one (1) week before disposing of them. Items found at outdoor aquatic centers will be put in the lost and found area located at the outdoor aquatic center. Items found at outdoor aquatic centers will be kept for a minimum of one (1) weeks before disposing of them. Items left behind at the end of the outdoor aquatic season will be transferred to HCC and kept for one (1) weeks before disposing of them.

Photography Policy Permission to use Names/Images: Periodically, the SPR will take pictures or record participants while they are engaged in programs or while enjoying parks and other facilities. These photos may appear in Parks and Recreation brochures, website and publications. If you see a staff member or photographer taking pictures or videos and you do not want your picture taken, please speak to the photographer and request your photo not be taken and deleted if necessary.

Spring will be here before we know it! The days will continue to get longer, the temperatures will continue to rise, and Mother Nature is giving us all a chance to get outside and explore. The parks are waking up from their long winter hibernation and are coming alive with more activity. The sound of kids laughing is once again on the playgrounds, the crack of the bat on the ball fields, and an increased number of community members out walking, running, and biking. 2024 is going to be a great and exciting year for Sedalia Parks & Recreation! Throughout this activity guide you will be sure to find something for everyone. We are very excited about all the programs, activities, and adventures ahead for us this spring and summer. Liberty Land Train will be up and running once again, we are very eager to be receiving our new train engine any day now. Please be sure to like us on Facebook to learn all the details on Liberty Land Train. Liberty Park will be begin to see construction on a new playground. The playground will be located between the large shelter and bathrooms. Once the new playground is complete we will remove the old playground, but will be keeping the elephant of course! Groundbreaking of the New Aquatic Facility at the Old Sutherlands property right off of east 50 Hwy will begin this summer too! We look forward to keeping the public updated during construction. Liberty Park Stadium improvements will begin in August with completion of project in early winter. This project will consist of complete turf playing surface, fence improvements, lined and paved parking lot, and seating improvements. This project is funded by a match grant and will help us to make improvements that are needed. In 2023, we hosted 212 games at Liberty Stadium! These improvements will give us the opportunity to offer more games at this historic stadium all year long for many to enjoy. With the closure of Centennial Pool comes change, I advise you to please check out the hours of operation at Liberty Pool on page 6 where you will find Adult Swim and Splash and Play information. We are working hard to provide a summer of fun, especially for those programs and activities that were once only held at Centennial Pool. As always our staff is open to any feedback to help serve our community to the best of our ability. You are the stewards and gatekeepers for Sedalia Parks and Recreation. The successes we see are a direct result of your support, involvement, and love for a quality of life that holds access to parks as key factor. Lifeguard Certification Courses Looking for a part time job at the pool? We’re hiring lifeguards! All lifeguards are required to attend a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course. The cost is $150 for a 2 year certification. For returning guards that need to get recertified, the cost is $75. You must be at least 15 years old by the final day of class. Blended learning lifeguard classes have about 7 hours and 30 mins of online work that must be completed before the first in person session. AquaFit: A high intensity water fitness class with aerobic and strength building exercises. AquaFit is a great cardiovascular workout. (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9am, 10am, 5:45pm @ HCC)

Water Aerobics: A medium intensity fitness class with aerobic exercises that use the resistance of the water to improve strength posture, flexibility, and coordination. (M/W/F at 10am @ HCC) Water Therapy: Stretching and moving in the water to improve balance and flexibility. This class is beneficial for seniors or anyone who needs a slower paced workout. (MWF at 9am @ HCC) Outdoor Deep Water Therapy: A slow paced workout that works on stretching and moving in the water to improve balance and flexibility in the deep end at Liberty Pool. This class is beneficial for seniors or anyone who needs a slower paced workout. (Every other Saturday in June and July from 9-9:45am @ Liberty Pool) June 1, 15, 29 July 13, 27 $5 per class SPLASH AND PLAY: Kids can play in shallow end of the Heckart Community Center or Liberty Pool. Water features are available during this time for kids age 5 and under-limit of 3 children to each adult.

Pool Rules 1. All children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, age 16 and older. An adult guardian must be within arm’s reach for children 6 and under. 2. Patrons who leave the facility MUST pay again for re-entry at outdoor facilities. 3. Admittance to the pool will be refused for drunkenness, inability to care for self, open sores, contagious disease, diarrhea, head lice, respiratory infections, improper attire, and/or improper behavior. 4. Children not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper. 5. Adults are required to change diapers in restrooms provided in the bathhouse. Please do NOT change diapers on the pool deck. 6. WALK—NO RUNNING! 7. No swimming in designated diving areas. 8. Diving is only allowed in specified areas. The high dive well is reserved for Smith Cotton and Bandits Swim team only. 9. ABSOLUTELY NO pushing, fighting, shoving, running, horseplay, profanity or abusive language. 10. No playing on handrails, ladders, stairs, ropes, and guard towers.

11. ABSOLUTELY NO smokeless tobacco, smoking, vapes, alcohol, drugs, glass containers, weapons. 12. Swimmers must wear clean, appropriate swimming attire. NO cutoffs, street clothes, thongs, speedos, denim, revealing swimsuits, or loose clothing allowed. No cotton or jean attire may be worn in the pools. 13. No electronic devices are allowed to be used in the bathhouses. 14. Safe water toys are allowed in the facility (foam and floatable items). Toys deemed unsafe by management or being used in a manner that threatens the safety or enjoyment of patrons will be prohibited. 15. No rafts or large inflatables. Young child inflatables allowed with lifeguard approval. 16. Lost or stolen articles are the responsibility of the owner. Lockers are available for patrons (bring own lock). 17. No outside food, drinks, or coolers are allowed inside the pool facility. 18. Animals are not allowed in the building or pool area, with the exception of guide dogs, which are allowed on the pool deck, but not in the water. 19. Staff reserves the right to check baggage if deemed appropriate. 20. NO SMOKING per City Ordinance 10099.

Swim Lessons

Session 1- June 17-27 (reg deadline June 12) Session 2- July 22-Aug 1 (reg deadline July 17) at Liberty Pool for $40 per session

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS: Private lessons are $18/30-minute lesson. You can sign up for 4, 6, or 8 sessions at a time. At the time of registration, we will get contact information and information about swim levels and goals. The aquatics specialist will then assign a swim instructor that will call to set up a time for your first lesson. Offered year round. PARENT INVOLVEMENT: An adult is required to get in the water for Water Babies and Pre-school swim. If more than one child in the family is registered, there needs to be an adult for each child. LOW ENROLLMENT: Classes not making the minimum enrollment may be cancelled. Participants may be offered a spot in another class time, depending on availability.

AGE CONSIDERATIONS: If the child is outside of the recommended age group you will need to call to register. Online registration will not give you an option of registering for the correct class. If your child is more than a year outside of the recommended age for their correct level, group lessons may not be the best option for them. Check out our private swim lesson information! WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS: In case of dangerous or cold, outdoor classes may move to HCC or be cancelled. If lessons are held at Liberty Pool during cool weather, swimmers may be in the water for a limited amount of time. If classes move or are cancelled, SPR will send out a TextCaster with information about your swim class. Sign up for TextCaster notifications on our website at www.sedaliaparks.com. HEALTH REQUIREMENT: If your child is sick, they may not enter the water for two weeks after the last episode of diarrhea. Call us with any questions about transfers and refunds.

6:15pm-7:45pm $5 per dog Humans are free to come watch but please leave the water fun to the dogs. The pools have gone to the dogs! Here's an opportunity for your pooch to beat the heat and have a “dog gone” time. Open to all friendly dogs and their owners. Dogs must remain under owner’s control at all times. Dogs must remain leashed until inside the pool gates. No free running! proof of current vaccinations required. Owners are responsible for any “accidents”. Any dogs not obeying rules and/or causing a disturbance will be asked to leave. This event is for dogs.

Wednesday, June 5 Clover Dell Park 6pm Ages 1-6 years old $15 per entry Minimum 20 participants, maximum 30 per age group Register by May 31st On your mark, get set, GO! Sedalia Parks and Recreation is turning clover Dell into a racetrack on June 5th to host a Power Wheels Race! Children ages 1-6 are invited to bring their personal Power wheel and compete in a friendly race! Check-in begins at 5:30pm. The competition will be divided into three age divisions: under 2, 3-4, and 5-6. Trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd in each category. All Power Wheels must be original stock vehicles with no modified batteries. There will be a separate race for all 24V Power Wheels- all ages included. Helmets are required for participation.

Dino Dig Wednesday, July 17 Liberty Park 10am or 6pm session Ages 2-6 years old $15 per child Minimum 15 participants, maximum 50 per session Register by July 12 Don’t miss out on dino-rific FUN at Liberty Park! Children will learn about dinosaurs by digging for bones, eggs, fossils, and much more in our GIANT sand piles.

Tree Talk

Community Garden Garden is located at 407 N Hurley Community garden is always needing volunteers! The garden is open during park hours. No need to call. There is always a need for weed pulling, harvesting, and watering plants!

Friday, April 5 Convention Hall Time TBA The Tree Board with the City of Sedalia and the Parks and Rec are hosting a Tree Talk discussing tree care and upcoming problems facing our city’s trees. Oak Wilt and EAB will be discussed. Robbie Doerhoff, forest Entomologist from the Department of Conservation is the key speaker. Free trees to be given away.

Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, March 23 Liberty Park 10am SHARP Ages 0-10 years Free No pre-registration needed. Join us for our annual Easter Egg Hunt at Liberty Park! The horn will sound at 10am sharp, so don’t be late! This event is for children ages 0-10. Look for designated areas for each age group. Don’t forget to bring a basket to collect your eggs in! After the Easter Egg Hunt, the Easter Bunny will make a special appearance!

Patriotic Parade

All 4th of July Events will be held on Thursday, July 4. Check-in 7-750am 8am: 1 Mile Open Run 8:20am: 1 Mile Novice Run 8:40am: 2 Mile Family Run 9am: Kids 40 yard dash

Prizes awarded to top finishers in each male/female age group for Open and Novice. All 1 mile runners will receive a finisher’s medal.

This is a great tool to help monitor the progress of weightloss/fatloss and muscle gain. It is recommended to test every 12 weeks to monitor progress. $20 per scan and interpretation of results.

Before beginning a new fitness routine, Sedalia Parks & Recreation encourages all participants to consult with their physician. Proper fitness attire is required at all times, which includes closed-toe athletic shoes (no sandals, work boots or slip-on shoes), shirts (no sports bras or half-shirts- shirts must cover the full torso), proper shorts or sweat pants (no jeans, jean shorts, belts, pants with buttons, snaps, zippers or rivets). Due to the inherent risks involved in using fitness training equipment, you must be 16 years of age for all fitness training areas; this includes all weight training and cardiovascular equipment within these areas. Youth ages birth to 9 years of age (with exception of youth programming sponsored by Sedalia Parks & Recreation) are not allowed on the fitness floor or the weight/cardio equipment. Youth ages 10-15 years may utilize fitness equipment, if directly supervised by a parent or guardian, after completion of a youth fitness orientation. Youth must wear an orange wristband to be checked out from the fitness desk attendant. Youth 15 and under are not allowed to use the power racks or leg press with sled. All fitness equipment must be returned to appropriate storage locations after use (i.e. weights must be re-racked). Machines must be wiped down after each use. All equipment must remain in the Fitness Center. No equipment is permitted for use in hallways or gymnasium. The use of chalk is prohibited. Dumbbells or other weights are not allowed on cardio equipment. If weights, pulleys or other parts become jammed, users should not attempt to free them without staff assistance. Report the problem to the Fitness Attendant. Muddy, dirty or excessively wet shoes are not allowed in the Fitness Center. Dropping of weights is prohibited. Be respectful- screaming, yelling, excessive grunting or use of profane language is prohibited. 30 minute time limit on cardiovascular equipment while others are waiting. Weight belts are not permitted on benches or any upholstered equipment. Collars must be used when working out with barbells to ensure weights do not fall. Gym etiquette provides that you allow other guests to work-in if doing more than one set on a piece of strength equipment. Sedalia Parks & Recreation is not responsible for personal belongings. Please lock all personal belongings in a locker. Food is not permitted in the Fitness Center area; Drinks are permitted in approved closed containers. Personal trainers, not approved by Sedalia Parks & Recreation, may not provide their services at the Heckart Community Center. Anyone participating in a personal training session not associated with Sedalia Parks & Recreation approved Personal Trainer may be ejected from the facility and have their membership revoked with no refund. Non-members and their trainers may be ejected from the facility permanently. Failure to comply with any of the posted Fitness Center or Sedalia Parks & Recreation rules may result in suspension and/or permanent ejection.

Tiny Tees Ages 3 and 4 years old $35/player Classes on Wednesdays June 5th – 26th Session times: 9-9:45am, 5:30-6:15pm, 6:30-7:15pm Register by May 12th This program is an instructional based program. A lead instructor runs this program with the help of volunteers and parent involvement. Tiny Tee’s is a great way to introduce your child to the game of baseball while meeting new friends and getting some great exercise!

Tee Ball 5 – 6 years old Practice May / Games in June Tuesdays or Thursdays $45/player Register by April 14th The purpose of the program is to teach the basics of baseball be teaching kids how to field, catch and hit the ball as well as run the bases. Players are divided up into teams and will have a practice schedule that will last the month of May and games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday in June.

Type Youth Baseball Ages: K – 9th Grade Grade is ‘23 – ‘24 school year Practices begin in April and games in May/June Youth Baseball is a recreation league that is divided into grade divisions and players are separated out on teams. Youth Volleyball 3rd – 6th grade League runs late August – Nov. 6th $55/player-- includes team jersey Register by August 11th The Sedalia Parks & Recreation Youth Volleyball program is offered to boys and girls during the fall for kids in 3rd – 6th grade. This program is designed to develop an understanding of rules, fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Practice will be held at the Heckart Community Center during the week beginning late August. You will play 8 – 12 games starting mid – September, and the season will end roughly around Nov. 5th. This league does play other towns so there may be traveling to Cole Camp, Green Ridge, Centerview, Windsor, and Warrensburg along with 8 games we will play in two tournaments. Tournaments are held on Fridays and/or Saturdays. Games and practices are mostly on Mondays & Wednesdays!

There will be two division to sign up for. A Co-Ed division and a Men’s Division and players must be 16 years old or older. You can only play in one tournament and you may not register for both. Games will start at 6:00pm and be played at Centennial Park.

Pickleball Tournament Ages 18 years old or older Dates TBA $40/ Team Must register as a pair no individual sign ups. Tournament will be played Round Robin Style Doubles to be played in Men and Women’s on Saturday and CoEd on Sunday. Tournament director will oversee the tournament.

Pickleball Pickleball will be offered Monday – Friday 12:00 – 3:00pm and Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00pm. Pickleball no longerhas an age specification and is played at the Heckart Community Center Gymnasium.

Community Fitness Night The Bothwell Regional Health Center Medical Staff hosted its second Community Fitness Night at the Heckart Community Center on Dec. 28, 2023. More than 100 community members attended and were able to take a free Zumba class, use childcare, swim, use the courts, get pickleball lessons, and visit with members of the medical team about health issues or walk with them on the walking track. The event was meant to connect Bothwell’s medical professionals with community members in an informal, fun and healthy setting.

Outside Organizations that use Sedalia Parks and Recreation Facilities Paul Klover Soccer Assocation uses Clover Dell, Katy Park, and Convention Hall throughout the year for their soccer programs! SPR will need a minimum of $1,000,000 general liability insurance and a Certificate of Liability Insurance Form with City of Sedalia listed as Certificate Holder and additional insured.

The Heckart Community Center is a controlled access facility. Youth ages 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (age 16+) within the Heckart Community Center at all times. All children 15 and under entering the facility unaccompanied by an adult MUST have a photo on file, current address, phone number, and an HCC contract signed by the user and guardian on file before using the facility. Youth ages 13 and older are allowed entry into the Heckart Community Center without adult supervision. Youth ages 15 and under, along with parent or guardian, must sign and agree to the Youth Code of Conduct prior to entry into the Facility. Smoking or tobacco and alcohol use in any form is prohibited. Food and beverages are permitted in lobby, community rooms, party rooms and meeting rooms. Gum is prohibited. Glass and metal containers are prohibited. Food is not permitted in the Fitness Center, Pool, or Gym; all trash must be disposed properly,. Failure to do so will have consequences. Spitting is prohibited. No cell phones or cameras allowed in locker rooms or restrooms. Family locker room is for parents and young children ONLY. Elevator is for those with disabilities or over 18 years of age. Abusive or foul language is strictly prohibited. These actions may result in immediate expulsion and/or loss of future privileges. Anyone using physical force towards another patron or employee will be suspended for a minimum of one year. Horseplay is not permitted, which includes running. Disrespectful, back talking, or inappropriate action will result in immediate suspension. No sleeping or laying down on equipment or furniture. Shirts and proper pants must be worn at all times (except in pool where proper swim wear is required), you are required to dry off or change into dry clothes before exiting the pool locker rooms. Non-marking shoes must be worn in the activity areas (gym, track). Waffle-soled shoes or cleats are not allowed. Be respectful- screaming, yelling, excessive grunting, or use of profane language is prohibited. Basketballs and/or volleyballs are not allowed upstairs, balls are only allowed in the gym. Bouncing balls in the hallway or lobby will result in expulsion of the facility. Proper attire is required at all times, which includes closed-toe clean athletic shoes when in the gym or on the track, shirts (no sports bras or half-shirts; shirts must cover the full torso), proper shorts or sweat pants, and must be dry and not tracking water unless in the pool. No one under 16 is allowed upstairs unless with their guardian in arm’s reach, unless approved by Fulltime Park and Recreation Staff. Kid’s Zone is for children 10 and under with guardian supervision at all times. Personal music devices are only allowed when used with headphones. Bicycles, skateboards and in-line skates are prohibited. Animals in the facility are restricted to service dogs only. The HCC is not responsible for lost or stolen items, lockers are provided please bring your own lock. Locks must be removed daily. If caught stealing a police report will be filed and consequences will be handled as appropriate.
