About the ABSTRACT FUTURES

Tarot Deck

Hilma’s Ghost is the brainchild of artists Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray. We birthed as a feminist artist collective during the height of the pandemic with an aim to forge a community with women, nonbinary, and trans artists working in the realm of the spiritual. We draw inspiration from the contributions of women artists working with esoteric and ineffable subject matter throughout history and we use ritual and magic traditions to make art work collaboratively, run esoteric workshops for artists, and uplift underappreciated spiritual artistic practices.

We acknowledge the sacred lineage of women artists that have created tarot decks or drawn inspiration from them. This list includes, but is not limited to, Leonara Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun, and Niki de Saint Phalle. We acknowledge the magickal illustrations of Pamela Colman Smith and Lady Frieda Harris the history of tarot, the Rider-Waite and Thoth decks respectively.

We see ourselves as part of this emerging timeline of women artists that have have entered the enduring realm of tarot through art.

Abstract Futures Tarot was our first collaboration as artists. The dark times of the pandemic forced many people inward to introspect. Our collective and work together was born out of this introspection. As abstract painters, we employed abstract forms and symbols, which is unlike traditional tarot decks that use more representational imagery and narrative symbolism. While we love the diversity of decks out there, we believe abstraction allows users to engage with the images on a more intuitive and personal level. The use of abstraction serves another purpose: to be inclusive. This deck is for everyone.

Abstract Futures Tarot came out of a multitude of transformations that we as artists experienced in making it. We invite you to use these cards creatively and intuitively and in any manner in which your intuition and inspiration guide you. This is our gift to you.

Meanings of the Cards

The history of tarot is compelling and centuries-long. It has had different usages as a deck of playing cards as well as in magick and divination. The latter almost exclusively from the early 20th century onward. Earlier we mentioned what an attractive proposition it presents for artists for its pictorial inventiveness and deep symbolism. Literally, there are thousands of decks out there and new ones are being made all the time. The enduring nature of tarot lies in its power to tell stories and to relate to the major and minor aspects of our human existence.

The 78 cards in tarot can be divided into two parts:

Major Arcana: This is the epic narrative of the Tarot, comprising 22 cards that represent pivotal themes and significant milestones in our spiritual and personal journeys. From "The Fool," embarking on a journey of discovery, to "The World," symbolizing the culmination of one’s quest, these cards capture the essence of transformative experiences and universal truths.

Minor Arcana: The 56 cards of the Minor Arcana delve into the everyday nuances of life. Divided into four suits—Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands—each suit reflects different aspects of our worldly existence. Cups explore emotions and relationships, Pentacles focus on material aspects and achievements, Swords address thoughts and conflicts, and Wands ignite creativity and ambition.
