MARCUS KOAY
2023 ANC ENGLISH PUBLIC SPEAKING CHAMPIONSHIP
2023 ANC ENGLISH DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Our member Marcus Koay won first place in the English Public Speaking competition during the 2023 JCI Area North Convention And for your information, this was his first time taking part in the competition!

INTERVIEWER MARCUS hat initially sparked your interest in public king, and how did you develop your skills in this ? always had an interest in leading teams towards successful es. As such, communication skills are paramount to instilling oper motivation and work ethic in those who follow you. e developed my linguistic skills, particularly in the English age, by writing down my thoughts on a regular basis You say that writing is a hobby of mine, and so developing this came naturally speaking abilities specifically, I would have to say that it is listening to the appropriate talks on video streaming rms (e g Youtube) After a while, you would start to mimic ways of speech, especially during childhood and adolescent when your brain is most active in its development
Hi Marcus! Congratulations to you as you have won the first place in English Public Speaking!
Thank you!
(2) How do you prepare for a public speaking competition? Can you walk us through your typical routine?
The first step is to craft a compelling speech, appropriate to the topic at hand The success of this stage hinges almost entirely on your literacy level Of course, you could ask AI tools like ChatGPT to craft the whole thing for you, but this only makes it more difficult to recite your speech since the content isn’t truly written by yourself. Furthermore, it will most likely not match your level of competence in the respective language, exacerbating the issue of recitation. When it comes to composing A-class speeches, structure and coherence takes precedence over using advanced vocabulary. Regarding my routine, I would spend the evenings or early mornings crafting the speech. Once I am satisfied with the content, I then proceed with actual speaking practice. Whenever there are snippets of break sessions during my typical workday, such as my lunch break or when I just got home from the office, I would use this time to deliver my speeches This is best done in a private space for obvious reasons do you handle nervousness or stage fright speaking in front of a large audience? ce is the best teacher Start small Talk in front of a 5 Then when you ’ re comfortable, make it 10 and so
, it should be noted that that feeling of nervousness oes away completely. Confidence is key. It takes to spread your ideas on stage with god-knows how many people watching your every move My technique of developing confidence a few minutes before delivering my speech would be to remind myself that the judges and audience are humans too Nobody knows everything and your purpose is to educate the audience with your knowledge
Ask yourself: what is the worst that can happen? You might fumble your words and lose touch with your memory momentarily. Guess what? The judges have witnessed that numerous times. In all likelihood, you are not the first person who has committed such error.
(4) What are your thoughts on the use of visual aids, such as slides or props, in public speaking? How do you determine when and how to use them effectively?
In my opinion, that depends entirely on the nature of the presentation If the ideas you are trying to convey are rather complex and would require a fair bit more technical knowledge than what your average joe would typically be equipped with, then it only makes sense to use slides and props for a more effective delivery.
The time allowed for your speech should also be factored in. A speech that is permitted to go on no longer than 7 minutes, for instance, would most likely not require visual aids. 7 minutes is not a long time, believe me
As for the question of using them to great effect, it’s in those moments when you will need to convey more complex ideas which they would make the greatest impact For example, you cannot expect a layman to easily grasp the concepts of computer programming without visual aid
(5) Finally, what are your future goals and aspirations as a public speaker, and how do you plan to achieve them?
If we are homing into public speaking, I aim to take part in more public speaking competitions within JCI. I don’t really have a plan to achieve this other than signing up for the competitions I suppose you could say that my daily routine has already prepped me for the contests, since I like to write and most of the conversations I have with the suppliers in my business are from Western countries
