Increase the IACH exposure in the public and sailing environments. We held our second, very successful Cape Horners Hall of Fame (HoF) Induction on 21.09.23 with 6 new inductees. We issued an international press release to get nominations for HoF. We completed the first membership vote for HoF inductees. We had a successful partnership with the Golden Globe Race 2022 and acquired 6 new members. We had a very successful presentation of IACH burgees by Torben Grael to The Ocean Race skippers at the Itajai prize-giving in Brazil. We are currently partnering the Global Solo Challenge 2023. A staggered start from A Coruña, the IACH logo being widely displayed. We generated a lot of goodwill through these activities supported by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Jean-Luc Van Den Heede. Increase and strengthen our membership We want to encourage members to contact their sailing contemporaries who are eligible to be members. We were planning a simple Quarterly Newsletter. This will now be available on the new website under the title ‘Cape Horn Trawls’ by Andrew Halcrow with any news from the committee. There are potentially thirty new members from our partnerships with the GGR and The Ocean Race. Whilst we are creating a strong core membership, we also need to retain our present members. Please send feedback if you have any. Encourage membership participation The new website launched on 1st September with greater emphasis on the public pages creating interest. Some refinements are still needed. We thank Cornelis van Rietschoten (Corns) for his huge effort in its construction.

We would like to encourage members to be involved in major race partnerships as we have already with the GGR 2022-23, manning stands, etc. We had a presence at the OGR Race Village, Southampton, 29th Aug9th Sept. We had a very good stand presence in the Mini-Transat Race Village, 19th-21st Sept in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. International membership campaign We are planning an international membership campaign. This will need more resources. Volunteers please. We are liaising closely with Richard Thorpe in New Zealand who has been very supportive. Our international member Marco Nannini is also very supportive of this plan but is occupied with running the Global Solo Challenge Race at present. Annual lunch theme and location The Committee are very pleased to announce that the Annual Lunch will be held on 19th November, 2023 in the Princess Royal Gallery in Portsmouth. We will be celebrating 50th Anniversary of the 1973/74 Whitbread and the 30th Anniversary of the 1993/94 Whitbread Races. We have invited our President, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Sir Chay Blyth and Cdr Stephen Walton RN, the Rear Commodore of the RNSA (and also an IACH member) to be our guest speakers. Members will be updated on all the work that is going on to improve what we offer as an association. The Annual Lunch in November has sold out at 100 places. Some members could not get a place and, for that, we apologise. The venue could NOT increase the numbers. We will be addressing this for next year’s lunch. Thank you for your support.

The Cape Horner journal goes back a long way to 1964. Whether you are a new or existing IACH member, if your story has not yet featured, it’s time to tell us about it. Please get in touch by email - journal@capehorners.org CHJ83

Develop bursary funding and placement Following our successful sponsorship in 2022, we have continued with the Bursary scheme this year. The Committee approved £2,000 to support the Challenger voyage for ten young cadet volunteers cadets of the St John Ambulance. This took place from 21st-25th August. See later article. Read more on the Bursary pages in this journal. Maintain circumnavigation registers These are unique registers which show: 184 records in the solo Non-Stop register. 153 records in the solo With Stops register. 1,857 records in the growing multi-crew register.…………………………. Look for additional resource/help on and off the Committee The MCCR (Multi-Crew Circumnavigation Register) is being managed Barry Pickthall and Andrew Halcrow. We are looking for help in 3 main areas: 8.2.1 Membership Campaign 8.2.2 Experience in Digital/Social Media marketing 8.2.3 An Events Committee Member (who, in particular, organises the Reunion Lunch) 8.2.4 A Treasurer We would love to hear from any member who would like to join/assist the Committee. An annual strategic review will take place in December 2023 Members will be updated of our intentions. If any member wishes to raise an issue, please email secretary@capehorners.org

IT Help needed! The IACH Archivist, Chris Roche, lives in Carshalton, Surrey, and would love to hear from anyone who can visit him and offer tech help. Chris uses Microsoft Windows and Office programs.

Sailing News In Brief Golden Globe Race 2022-23

Six sailors completed this round the world race. www.goldengloberace.com/ggr-2022/ The Globe40 2022-23 Despite winning only one of the 8 legs of this double-handed round the world race, Frans Budel and Ysbrand Endt on Sec Hayai were the overall winners. The Ocean Race 2022-23 The overall IMOCA winner was 11th Hour Racing Team followed by Team Malizia, Biotherm and Team Holcim-PRB. www.theoceanrace.com Ocean Globe Race 2023 This race started from Southampton on 10th September heading for Cape Town. The yacht Triana was diverted to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, for the medivac of a crew member. www.oceangloberace.com The Global Solo Challenge 2023 Welsh skipper Daffyd Hughes was the first to leave A Coruña, Spain on 26th August and there are now 4 skippers at sea. A further three yachts start on 21st October and nine more on 28th October. This single-handed, without assistance, around the world sailing event is a unique RTW race in that it has a staggered start and so the faster boats start later than the slower ones and will aim to catch up. It should be an interesting finish!.... www.globalsolochallenge.com The Clipper Round the World Race 2023 The first leg of the 13th edition of the Clipper race from Portsmouth to Puerto Sherry, Spain, started on 3rd September. The yachts will sail 8 legs and complete 14 races before arriving back in Portsmouth next year. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

Excerpt from ‘Before The Mast – In the Grain Races of the 1930s’ by Geoffrey Sykes Robertshaw, edited by Elvin Carter. ISBN 0-9559550-0-0. Geoffrey, a Merchant Navy Able Seaman served on many vessels including the Winterhude. His logbook tells of the excitement, danger and daily life on a tall ship, here sailing from Australia to Falmouth. Note the lat./long. More to follow… DAY 28 - Thursday, March 22nd Position 51°S 130°W I was very nearly washed overboard this afternoon while going aft to the wheel at the time. I had just reached midships (the most dangerous spot) when, without warning, I was literally swept off my feet by an enormous wave, which sent me crashing headlong against the lee rail just as she dipped under the water. For a moment, owing to the amount of water, I thought I was actually in the sea, when suddenly, I managed to grip something solid which I gripped with all my strength. It happened to be a stay and it was thanks to this stay that I am alive today. I seemed to cling there for hours, while it could not have been above a few seconds, when my Mate who had witnessed the whole thing from the poop, came rushing down and grabbed me at very grave risk to himself back to safety up onto the poop. I was wet through as I had no oilskins at the time but on a sailing ship there are no dry clothes to change into, so I took my wheel and stood my hour there wet through, cold and feeling thoroughly miserable.……………………… … Later the same day, Geoffrey talks of Theo’s experience: Theo Keller is knocked against one of the capstans by a wave. He gets up screaming and yelling, unable to straighten his back or to walk, so he is carried up for’ard where we discover he has hurt his spine. It is a sheer wonder to me that no one has been killed or washed overboard so far. every day, every minute you have to take your life in your hands. ……….. CHJ83

Globe Race (a retro race marking the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round the World Race), and French Solo Ultim World Tour in 100ft multihulls which starts from Brest on Sunday January 7, 2024. https://capehorners.org/circumnavigation-registers/

IACH member and GGR participant Ian Herbert-Jones was keen to write something for The Cape Horner about his rescue in the Southern Ocean after the dismasting suffered by his yacht Puffin. However, only a few days before their departure, Ian received a callup from the yacht Spirit of Helsinki and needed to leave within days to participate in the Ocean Globe Race and join the all-Finnish crew. .…… Will Ian be fluent in Finnish by the end of the race?! – Ed. ……………..
