A LETTER FROM YOUR SENIOR PASTOR Rev. Chris Henry

Dear Friends,

One of the highlights of the summer for me each year is the opportunity to take a week of study leave, all by myself, for prayerful reflection, reading, and planning in the mountains of North Carolina. I always take a stack of books with me, many of which I’ve intended to read since the previous summer! This year, much of my reading and planning revolved around the theme of rebuilding, a concept that is both deeply rooted in scripture and as current as daily headlines.

I’ve been reading about the loss of trust in institutions, the related rise in a sense of disconnection and isolation experienced by many, the weakening of social ties that bind us together, and the impact of these developments. I also read about how vitally important it is to build and strengthen communities of belonging that point us to a purpose and meaning more significant than ourselves. Again and again, I was reminded of the essential value of congregations like ours in moments like this.

As I moved to my study of scripture and preparation of worship themes for the year ahead, it became clear that our theological tradition has always understood part of its God-given call to be the work of construction. As a congregation, Second Presbyterian Church describes itself as a welcoming community of faith where Jesus Christ transforms lives. The creation of welcoming community and the ongoing process of transformation are acts of building and rebuilding. They ask us to remember our core identity as beloved children of God and open ourselves to the new work of the Spirit among us.

And so, this program year at Second we will devote the abundant resources of this community to the urgent work of rebuilding.

In a time when many have lost faith in the institutions that once provided structure to our common life, we are called to rebuild trust.

Following years of separation and isolation, we are called to rebuild community.

While people of every age struggle to find purpose, we are called to rebuild paths to abundant life.

As deepening division and the forces of polarization tear us apart, we are called to rebuild bridges across the chasm.

4 | Fall 2023 Second Presbyterian Church

Second Presbyterian Church will commemorate 185 years of ministry on November 19, when we celebrate Commitment Sunday in morning worship – an invitation to renew our pledge to build on the work of generations past and for the benefit of those yet to come.

This program year, I’m looking forward to seeing how the Spirit draws us together and equips us for the construction projects ahead.

My solo week was valuable and productive, but my most memorable image of rebuilding came in June when our sons Sam and Ben were enrolled in summer clubs at the Montreat Conference Center. They did what you do at summer camp—art projects, silly games and songs, hiking trails and skipping rocks in the creek—all the while building a brand new community.

What I saw over the course of that week was the power of creative energies set free to build and inspire. Strangers at the start of the week were inseparable friends by Friday. Confidence and self-awareness grew by leaps and bounds. Laughter multiplied and, when the week was over, so did tears.

To the exiles returning to a home they did not recognize or never knew, the prophet Isaiah proclaims a promise that implies a command:

The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.

God has work for us to do. All are welcome and needed. Hard hats not required.

What a wonderful year awaits us at Second!

See you in church,

We all have aspects of our being that we have never paid attention to, which unconsciously impact our lives and relationships. The Enneagram is a tool for revealing insights into these characteristics that helps us understand the complexity of our human nature and personality. At first glance, the Enneagram appears to be just another personality profiling system. However, that description comes woefully short of capturing the Enneagram for what it truly is: wisdom. The Enneagram is wisdom about nine styles of human character identified most accurately through an understanding of a person’s primary motivation and how that motivation impacts behavior because of how they see, interpret, and experience the world. In particular for the disciple of Christ Jesus, this wisdom becomes truly transformational as it is engaged in connection to spiritual practices through God’s Spirit.

This fall, you are invited to join leading Enneagram teacher and facilitator David Bell, director of Enneagram Insight, for a series of three classes that will offer insight, clarity, wisdom, and discovery. Together we will journey along the path to realizing our unique gifts and strengths, overcoming barriers, and discovering our highest direction in life. This three-night workshop is designed for both beginners as well as those with more experience in the Enneagram journey of self-discovery. Childcare is available.

Calling All Youth

YOUTH MINISTRY EVENTS RAMP UP FOR FALL

Our Youth Ministry creates a place of belonging where all are known, formed, and sent as disciples and connects youth to a welcoming community of faith where Jesus Christ transforms lives.

2022-2023 marked a year of significant change and transition in youth ministries. It also marked a year of new energy, enthusiasm, and excitement. We spent much of our time thinking and dreaming about what the future of youth ministries looks like at Second.

Our hope is that youth ministries is understood and experienced as something much broader than what happens in the Youth Suite. We want youth deeply connected to the entire church, engaging in and with a variety of ministries at Second and beyond.

We are always eager for new volunteers in youth ministries! If you are interested in volunteering please contact Andrea Kamwendo (AKamwendo@SecondChurch.org) or Tom Markey (TMarkey@SecondChurch.org).

Building Up Our Community

INTERFAITH HABITAT BUILD

SEPTEMBER 23

7 AM-12:30 PM

“ Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, community, and hope. We envision a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

Habitat for Humanity Mission & Vision

We have an opportunity as a congregation, together with approximately 200 people from other faith communities throughout our city (Jewish, Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Protestant), to live out in its most literal form: A Time to Rebuild!

These faith communities are working with Habitat for Humanity, Greater Indianapolis, to fundraise and build all the interior and exterior wall panels for two homes for selected families—in one morning! As Habitat’s website states, their interfaith builds are held to “embody the power of unity in diversity with the hope of further enriching our neighborhoods.”

A “panel build” is a sponsored event where Habitat for Humanity brings the construction site to Second. Habitat supplies the building materials, tools, safety equipment, and professional supervision. Our faith communities provide the space and volunteers. The Habitat homeowner-in-training will participate in the panel build, working alongside the volunteers who can witness firsthand the impact of the build on the homeowner and the community.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are asking for volunteers to build, greet, provide hospitality, and volunteer with new friends from other faith groups as we respond to housing instability issues within our community. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and no construction skills are needed to participate! The Habitat construction team will instruct and supervise – and make sure everyone is having fun!

Meet members of the Habitat “Tiger Team,” participate in a safety briefing, work one of two morning shifts, volunteer alongside our interfaith neighbors, and enjoy a box lunch! A panel build promotes team building and volunteerism for all involved and also provides a great cost savings for Habitat. As the Greater Indianapolis Habitat website states, “by the end of your volunteer experience, we hope you leave tired and inspired.”

Please join us as volunteers, donors and/or prayer partners as we answer the call to be “the restorer of streets to live in.” (Isaiah 58:12) Sign up at SecondChurch.org/Events.

Second Act Speaker Series: Scott Sandstrom, Director of IT

Second Act is a ministry of relationships. We believe that the second half of life is so much bigger than a number. It is a time of life that is full of possibility, sometimes including new freedoms and unique challenges and transitions. Whether retirement, becoming an empty nester, or transitioning to a different career—new health challenges or overcoming a serious health challenge – the second half of life is a time of life that is full and ever changing. We hope to explore and enjoy this season of life together, all the while building up the body of Christ.

Our mission is to foster meaningful Christian fellowship, closer interpersonal relationships, and a sense of community and belonging among those who are in their “Second Act” or “second half” of life, through fun, and educational programs, social activities, and events.

Welcome to Our Newest Lake Fellows

The Lake Fellow Residency is a unique, two-year developmental program for seminary graduates who hold a Master of Divinity degree and are on track for ordination in the PC(USA). Under the direct supervision of Rev. Chris Henry, Fellows gain invaluable experience in parish ministry, church leadership, continued academic study, and much more, serving and learning in this large church setting. The Fellows’ first year is comprised of two rotations: Care and Mission. During the second year, Fellows choose their own rotations in areas of special interest. Two outstanding candidates are selected each spring, and they serve for two years, beginning in August. We wish a warm welcome to our new first year Lake Fellows, David Kim and Hannah Ostlund.

David Kim

After 13 years of exploration, David Kim’s journey comes full circle with a return to Indianapolis, the very place where his American adventure began as a foreign student. Born into a family of ministers at Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea—an Assemblies of God affiliate—David’s curiosity about the Holy Spirit’s transformative work within and beyond the walls of the church was sparked at an early age.

When he was 20, David left his motherland and moved to the United States to attend Moody Bible Institute, majoring in Biblical Studies. His time there solidified his biblical foundation and helped him discern his sense of call, which he had first heard the whisperings of at the age of six. This curiosity consistently pushed David out of his comfort zone, leading him to join the U.S. Army. There, David became a U.S. citizen and served as a behavioral health specialist, helping fellow soldiers with PTSD and other mental health crises. A graduate of Duke Divinity School, David served several Korean American churches and completed an internship at White Memorial Presbyterian Church (WMPC) in Raleigh, NC.

WMPC has since become his home church, where his Presbyterian identity began to take deep root in the soil of the Reformed tradition. Currently, David is immersed in a year-long chaplain residency at Duke University Hospital. In this space, he often reflects on the theological concept of “home” as he accompanies infants, children, and their families on their journeys. David is a coffee enthusiast and unwavering Chelsea FC fan. You might spot him along the White River Trail often, as he enjoys going for runs to clear his mind and connect with God’s creation.

Hannah Ostlund

Hannah Ostlund graduated in May of 2020 from Salem College in North Carolina with majors in Religion and Nonprofit Management and Community Leadership. In May of 2023, she also graduated with a Masters of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

During her time at Salem, Hannah found a deep interest in bridging the gap between the nonprofit community and the religious sector. At Salem, Hannah completed a two-semester study on mission work with a focus on breaking down the barriers of short-term trips as a way to open doors for long-term development. Emerging from these interests and experiences, Hannah enrolled at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. In her second year at the seminary, Hannah was selected as the Valentour Fellow studying the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on shortterm missions and what it means for the future of mission in our world. Hannah traveled to Peru, Malawi, and the US/Mexico Border to conduct this research with mission partners and religious organizations last summer. Upon her return to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Hannah completed an independent study with Dr. Hunter Farrell that culminated in a presentation on the adapted version of the short-term mission guidebook she created at Salem.

Hannah looks forward to joining the community of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, IN. While exploring her call, Hannah felt that this community of faith would welcome and support her as she gains and finetunes her skills for parish ministry.

“Being a member of the handbell ensemble is a joyful, indescribable feeling, both in the music we share with the congregants to bring God closer to our hearts, and in the engaging, encouraging, supportive spirit in rehearsals with the other handbell members.”

“Singing sacred music is the most meaningful avenue of prayer for me. Adding gentle harmonies increases my passion for the message, and being able to blend voices with friends in the choir makes it the very best that it can be.”

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Children’s Choir Shepherd

Children’s Choir volunteers play an important role in creating a welcoming, engaged, and inclusive classroom. The age range of each choir (4-7 and 7-13 years old) and number of children participating require active, caring adults to achieve a level of comfort and safety within the room that is conducive to learning. Children also need assistance robing for worship on days when they sing in service. Some children may require individualized support such as redirection, modeling and encouragement, a safe escort to and from the restroom, or help distributing and collecting materials during class. The lead teacher will set the pace for the class and may ask volunteers for specific help with supporting students as needed.

In keeping with church policy, all volunteers who work with children must complete a volunteer application and background check. To initiate the process, please visit SecondChurch.org/ChildrensChoirs.

Rebuilding Spaces to Learn,Play,and Grow

A CHILDREN’S CIRCLE PRESCHOOL UPDATE

As we get our new school year underway at Children’s Circle Preschool, there is a lot to be excited about. We have welcomed over 160 children from 134 families to the program. An important part of what we do is build relationships and surround our students with a team. Throughout the year, our staff will help children build skills. We are building a staff team with the addition of several new teachers.

We also started the year with spaces that have been rebuilt. A few of our classrooms have been restored after last winter’s flood. Walls are painted and we are adding children’s artwork and teaching materials. We also started the year with new playgrounds. The playground on the west side of the building was installed in late August and a new playground surface was added to the courtyard space. We are so fortunate to have these additions to share with the children of the preschool and church.

Remaining Flexible While Rebuilding

They say that the one thing you can always count on is “change.” Change, also normally met with mixed emotions, makes it difficult to remain flexible at times. Then, rebuilding introduces a new round of reactions.

In the winter of 2018, CenterPoint Counseling embarked on a renovation of the space, including the addition of three new offices and a new waiting room/reception area. During the renovation, therapists relocated to other areas within the building to meet with clients. They were thankful for the flexibility of the staff, the understanding of clients, and the hospitality of Second as they occupied other spaces of the church. In March of 2019, CenterPoint returned to a beautifully expanded, updated, and rebuilt space. A time for excitement and celebration!

Hello March 2020, in which the entire world experienced drastic changes due to the Covid pandemic. A new reality for everyone with lock downs and closures. CenterPoint staff quickly adjusted to this reality and began conducting telehealth appointments with clients. Over time, further changes presented a time of uncertainty and anxiety. However, as CenterPoint slowly returned to their offices, there was another opportunity to remain flexible while rebuilding the “new normal.”

Then, unfortunately and unexpectedly for CenterPoint Counseling (and other areas of the church), Christmas Eve 2022 granted an alternative reason for provisions. Due to a burst pipe from the HVAC system on the roof, a good portion of CenterPoint flooded. This resulted in many months of the loss of offices and the inviting atmosphere CenterPoint presented. Restoration of the space has been a slow, trying process. CenterPoint would like to thank all those involved in making this happen and especially thank their staff and clients for the grace, patience and flexibility extended during all the times of rebuilding. Thankfully, it appears the finish line is near for this most recent change. It will surely be a time of relief.

Care Ministries

PRAYER BINDS US TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY OF COMPASSION AND HOPE

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful...” Colossians 4:2

The ministry of Care is the work of the whole body of Christ: church members, deacons, ruling and teaching elders, and staff. Together, we believe that in life and in death, Christ is present with us, redeeming our brokenness, celebrating in our joy, and leading us to wholeness and peace. As followers of Christ, we believe that we are called to embody Christ’s presence and compassion for one another.

If you or a loved one is hospitalized or has a need for support or prayer, or you simply want to let your church family know what is going on in your life, know that we want to hear from you. Please contact Coordinator of Pastoral Care, Ashley McNamara. Ashley can connect you with a pastor or initiate other types of care.

It is a holy and joyful calling to care for one another in all seasons.

Intercessory Prayer Group • Mondays, via Zoom

Join in the ministry of prayer as we lift up the joys and concerns of our community and world. All are welcome to be a part of this ministry.

Contact: Rev. Madison VanVeelen (MVanVeelen@SecondChurch.org) for Zoom details.

Service of Wholeness and Communion • Sundays • 11:15 AM, Milner Chapel

This 15-minute worship service is open to all and is a weekly opportunity to gather and receive the gifts of Scripture, prayer, and communion. After communion, anyone who wishes may receive anointing and prayer from a pastor.

Home Communion Ministry

Every Sunday after worship, our deacons are out in the community delivering home communion. Our hope is to serve those who cannot physically come to church, whether short- or long-term. We believe that the Lord’s Supper sustains us throughout our life of faith. It is a joy and a privilege to share this holy meal together!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Deacon Meal Ministry

Calling all cooks! Is cooking one of your love languages? Consider partnering with our Board of Deacons to offer meals to those in our community who could use a night off from cooking following a hospitalization, birth, or another significant life event.

Flower Delivery Ministry

Our Deacons are in need of more vases for their flower delivery ministry. If you have medium size vases that you could donate to the church, we will put them to good use! Please bring your vases to the church reception desk. As a reminder, if you or someone in your family is hospitalized or has other needs for prayer or support, we are here for you.

Contact: Coordinator of Engagement, Ellen Gullett (EGullett@SecondChurch.org). .

Hospitality Team

Join the Hospitality Team and help us be a welcoming community of faith! Sunday morning hosts greet guests, provide directional information, and answer questions. Hosts volunteer one Sunday a month and choose between one of two shifts. We also need subs who can fill in when necessary. If you prefer to work behind the scenes, you can volunteer to help set up the atrium coffee bar each week.

Welcome Team

The Welcome Team helps write notes and deliver welcome bags to guests who visit on Sunday morning. There is also a need for data entry assistance. The team meets every Monday.

Contact: Coordinator of Engagement, Ellen Gullett (EGullett@SecondChurch.org).

Children’s Circle Preschool

Children’s Circle Preschool (CCP) is always looking for substitute teachers. It is a fun way to be a part of the school without the commitment to a weekly schedule. Substitute teachers can choose the days they work and age groups they prefer to work with. Our staff is always grateful to have loving and supportive subs ready to help out in our classrooms.
