Second Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

2023 is a historic year for the Second Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund. 100 years ago, members of our congregation sought to ensure the future of the Church and to preserve its building through the establishment of an endowment. Under the wise and thoughtful management of its leaders then and over the decades, gifts of all sizes generously given by our members to the Endowment have grown, and today result in meaningful and important annual financial support to our Church maintenance, operations and programs.
In 2022, the Second’s Endowment provided more than $2M to benefit the work and mission of the Church— everything from Music and Fine Arts to our Mission and Outreach efforts. In fact, the Endowment Fund has an impact on nearly every aspect of the Church and expands our ability to do ministry both within the Church and outside our doors each day.
The foresight of our Second ancestors, combined with the annual generosity of our members through their pledges and gifts, form the fruitful ground from which we grow in faith and service to Christ and our community.
Thank you for your continued generosity!
Second Presbyterian Church is blessed in many ways thanks to the generosity of our Congregation. One of the most significant of those blessings is the Second Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund.
Created in 1923 by forward thinking Second members, the Endowment has served both the Church and the community for 100 years, providing important funding to maintain our beautiful building, and to sustain efforts to serve our neighbors in need.
Through the years, the Endowment has benefited from the leadership and counsel of its board members who nurtured its growth to its present size. Today the Endowment plays a significant role in supporting our annual budget, and is a source of funding for important programs such as the Northside Mission Food Pantry, CenterPoint Counseling, Music and Fine Arts, the Lake Fellow and Footsteps of
Your generosity and continued commitment to our Church and Endowment both support the work and mission of Second Presbyterian today, and help ensure its future impact on our members and the
Second Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund2022 was a year of return, renewal, and reengagement in community for Second Presbyterian Church following the challenges of the Pandemic. It was the right time for creative thinking and the perfect moment to reimagine our ministries and mission to meet emerging priorities. It was a time to listen, learn, and Grow Together.
One of the important ways that Second continues to grow and to remain vibrant and responsive to our Church and community needs is through the Second Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund. Each year the Endowment provides 15-18% of our annual budget income and supports programs and services that are meaningful to our members, the broader community, and our neighbors in need in Washington Township and beyond.
This year, we celebrate and give thanks for the first one hundred years of our Endowment and its extraordinary impact. Over the last century, Second Presbyterian has not been immune to the ups and downs of broader society. On the contrary, the congregation has experienced them fully. Through them all, from the Great Depression to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Second has been engaged in significant and faithful ministry. By God’s grace, we have been able to respond with courage to Christ’s call to serve those who are suffering, vulnerable, and in need.
I doubt that the founders of our Endowment could have imagined the scope of its impact today. It is an honor to be part of a congregation that is so compassionate, visionary, and generous; a community of leaders that embraces its responsibility to use our Endowment resources wisely and faithfully.
Thank you for your continued generosity and for your thoughtful investments in the future of Second Presbyterian Church.
With Gratitude,
We look forward to creating many more memories!
“I just want to thank all the staff and volunteers for the Food Pantry! It was my first time having to come last month—a different life change—but your kindness and patience made it easy. Thanks again for being the light of Jesus in a time of need.”
“I was new at Second Church. I first volunteered at the food pantry to meet people of the church and to discover what made this church so special. In the pantry I worked with volunteers who found joy in service to the community and especially the people in need in our own neighborhoods. In the volunteers, I found smiling faces with hardworking hands and minds. In the clients we serve, I found faces with smiles and voices of thanks for our church and the help in providing for their families. In short, in the food pantry I think I have found the heart and soul of Second Presbyterian Church.
Volunteering for a shift at the Northside Missions Food Pantry is the most joyous and rewarding hard work I have ever experienced. In the pantry groups of volunteers provide many services to support the mission. Drivers pick up donations, stockers then sort and stock the shelves with foods purchased and delivered from Gleaners, Midwest, St. Vincent DePaul, and others. During the summer we are stocked with fresh vegetables grown and harvested by volunteers in the church garden. Then the joy begins as up to seventy families from our neighborhood come in to fill their grocery carts and home pantries. Their smiles and thanks provide us, the volunteers with the compensation for our few hours work. The food pantry for me is a gift of opportunity.”
~David Champa, Food Pantry Volunteer“I discovered CenterPoint after attending New Day, their divorce support group for children. At New Day, I met an amazing CenterPoint therapist. She helped me find my way during one of the most difficult times of my life . . . Her support helped me navigate the balance of each of the components of my life and prioritize where my energy was most valuable and needed. Through the generosity of the Samaritan Fund, I was able to access the help and support I needed without adding additional financial strain to my already challenging situation. I simply would not have been able to afford the counseling services I needed and have the life I have today without the support of the Samaritan Fund.”
~Stephanie C., Previous CenterPoint Client“I thought of my senior year in terms of Sundays. Sundays became the highlight of my week because the family and faith I experienced as a member of Footsteps of Faith were so dear to me. . . The people I became close with during Footsteps are the first people I reach out to when I need advice, the comfort of a friend, or just a laugh. . .
Experiencing Europe through the lens of Footsteps of Faith created a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Seeing the places we learned about with the people I had grown to love, was a beautiful end to both my senior year and my time in Second youth group. I am forever in debt to Footsteps of Faith for the wonderful ways it changed my life.”
“I’ve been reflecting on just what the Sanctuary Choir of Second Presbyterian has meant to me during the past 9+ years. It’s all about goodwill, grace, and gratitude—and it is terribly unique to our choir community. I will take with me all the dear memories, all the treasured experiences, all the wonderful friendships, and all the love.”
~Rev. Barbara Parker, Choir Member“In 2003 Second Presbyterian Church made a financial and volunteer commitment to provide freedom, independence, and dignity to low-income people in our community who are trapped in their homes due to their disabilities. In the interim years, that commitment has remained rock solid and the Endowment remains the largest supporter among the churches with whom we partner. With over 3,000 volunteers statewide and more than 3,500 ramps built, Second stands as the cornerstone of this ministry. “
“I wish the members of Second Presbyterian could be there on an intake day, like when a mom of two special needs children walked into the doors of our furnished apartment shelter. She fell into the arm chair in the living room crying out of joy and relief, and said, ‘I can’t believe I get to live here.’ Your congregation makes moments like that possible with its support, and we are so grateful.”
~Mike Chapuran, Executive Director, Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis“Exhibit A that Second exists for the good of the larger Church and the world is its commitment to the Lake Fellows – Take seminary graduates, train them up for two years, invest heavily in their formation as under-shepherds to the Good Shepherd, and bless them to go out and serve God’s Kingdom! Fifteen years later the relationships formed and the time spent at 7700 North Meridian continues to profoundly shape my pastoral imagination. Some of God’s best blessings have been Bill Enright, Lewis Galloway, the pastors, staff, and saints of Second Church.”
~Rev. Ryan Moore, Senior Pastor, First Presbyterian Church Nashville
“An invaluable gift I’ve experienced as a Lake Fellow is the mentorship, collaboration, and friendship I’ve enjoyed with my colleagues, especially with my fellow pastors. I’m deeply grateful for the complementary range of gifts my colleagues possess and bring to their ministry. When I leave Second, I will bring the influence of not a couple, but a dozen fellow pastors into my future work. As a “sending church,” Second will be sending me with mentors and friends in ministry, a treasure worth more than fine gold.”
What is the Beecher Society?
Members and friends who have notified Second Presbyterian that the Church is included in their estate plans are honored as members of the Beecher Society, named after our first pastor, Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. Estate gifts include bequests in wills, gifts of paid-up life insurance policies, designating Second Presbyterian as the beneficiary of a retirement fund/IRA or charitable trust, a charitable gift annuity, a gift of property and other estate planning vehicles.
Why should I consider leaving a gift to Second Presbyterian Church in my will or other estate plans?
Second Presbyterian benefits each day from the generosity of members before us who helped build the Endowment Fund which is an important financial resource for many programs that help our members and the community in meaningful ways. Remembering Second in your estate plans is a wonderful way to ensure the future of the Church with the comfort of knowing that your gift will be well managed and grow in the future. In addition, there are tax benefits to your estate which can be significant with certain estate planning vehicles.
What do I need to provide to Second to let them know I have included a gift to the Church in my estate plans?
If you are comfortable sharing, for our planning purposes, we would appreciate a copy of the page in your will that refers to your gift, or a copy of any documentation about your planned gift.
What happens to my gift when it arrives at Second Presbyterian?
All estate gifts are gratefully received by the Second Presbyterian Endowment Fund. If you have not designated your gift to a specific cause or fund within the Endowment, your gift will be placed in the Building Fund to help with Church repairs and capital projects. If you wish to designate your gift, the Endowment has the Impact Fund which is available for use for Second’s most urgent priorities, as well as funds designated for mission, education, music and fine arts, youth and more. For larger gifts, a named fund can be created to benefit a program or ministry of the Church.
If I’m leaving a Bequest to Second Presbyterian Church, what should my will say?
You will want to name the legal name of the Church or the Endowment in your will and include the address so that there is no confusion at the time your estate is settled. You may leave a percentage of your estate, the remainder of your estate after other gifts have been fulfilled, a specific dollar amount gift, a gift to a specific cause, etc. The Office of Stewardship and Endowment can assist you with specific language, a tax ID number and other information for your attorney or financial adviser.
How do I designate Second to benefit from an IRA or retirement fund? Contact the company or your financial adviser for information. There should be an easy way to designate Second as your beneficiary online or through a paper designation.
What are benefits of being a Beecher Society member?
Beecher Society members are invited to special activities and events at Second Presbyterian, have their names included in printed lists of Beecher Society members (unless requested to be anonymous), and inspire other members to think about remembering the Church in their estate plans.
What if I wish to be an anonymous member of the Beecher Society?
No problem! We will make a note in your file that you wish to remain anonymous in any listings of Society members.

Endowment Trustees are members of the Church, slated by an Endowment Nominating Committee, and elected by the Session to serve three-year terms. Trustees are selected based on their engagement in leadership and the life of the congregation, and their professional and volunteer experiences in the community.
Trustees attend quarterly meetings, set spending policies, monitor use of Endowment funds, and oversee the professional managers of the Endowment’s assets. Officers of the Endowment Board are elected annually by its members.

“One of the many strengths of Second Presbyterian Church is its extraordinary mission focus and resultant mission outreach. Second Presbyterian doesn’t just “Say” mission outreach, Second Presbyterian “Does” mission outreach. It helps people from all walks of life via an exceedingly long list of programs such as the Food Pantry, tutoring, and Habitat for Humanity. Like so many others, we have volunteered for several of these programs and have witnessed their profound impact on our neighbors.
An important funding mechanism of this mission outreach is the Second Presbyterian Church Endowment. It celebrates its 100th anniversary this year which demonstrates its power and sustainability. It has clearly shown the ability to help people in the present, and is structured and committed to doing so in the future.
An integral piece of our estate plan is to provide financial support to the Endowment. This support is for a specific mission fund that is part of the Endowment’s funding of Second’s outreach. The long-standing commitment of Second to its mission focus and resultant mission outreach was of paramount importance to us as we created our estate plan with Second Presbyterian Church as a crucial component.”
I’ve heard that statement many times from individuals or couples who have just finalized their estate plans. Having your estate organized and in order can be a huge relief and bring freedom from worry.
And there is something wonderful about knowing that what you have worked so hard to accumulate during your lifetime will not only help loved ones, but continue your support of your Church and organizations that do good in the world.
Estate planning is something everyone should think about—it can save estate taxes, and provide a gift that will be carefully managed and benefit God’s work through Second Presbyterian Church and other organizations.
An Estate gift to benefit Second Church can be simple and take many forms:
• A bequest in your will—an outright gift of cash, or a percentage of your estate, or residual of your estate
• Naming Second Presbyterian Church as the beneficiary of a retirement fund, 401(k) or IRA
• Naming Second Presbyterian Church as the owner and beneficiary of a paid life insurance policy
• Establishing a charitable remainder trust to benefit Second Presbyterian Church
• Investing in a charitable gift annuity that will pay income to you during your lifetime and then benefit Second Presbyterian Church
Whether you’re in the “thinking about” or planning stages, we are happy to answer questions and provide assistance. All undesignated estate gifts received by the Church are placed in the Endowment’s Building Fund for capital needs of the Church. Estate gifts may also be designated for particular Endowment Funds including the newly created Impact Fund that is unrestricted and supports community and the Church’s greatest needs. Named funds can be created within the Endowment for specific purposes for gifts of $50,000 or more.
For assistance or more information, contact Nancy A. Frick, MDiv, Director of Stewardship and Endowment, NFrick@SecondChurch.org or 317-253-6461, ext. 359.
Thank you for your faithful generosity and thoughtful discernment,
