Choral Call to Worship

O Praise God in His Holiness Charles Villiers Stanford Sanctuary Choir Section Leaders; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor (1862-1924)

O praise God in his holiness: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him in his noble acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him in the sound of the trumpet: praise him upon the lute and harp. Praise him in the cymbals and dances: praise him upon the strings and pipe. Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praise him upon the loud cymbals. Let everything that hath breath: praise the Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

Text: Psalm 150

* Call to Worship Zachary A. Rivers

One: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

All: You have set your glory above the heavens.

One: Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,

All: to silence vengeful voices.

One: Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great.

All: You are clothed with honor and majesty, wrapped in light as with a garment.

One: For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens,

All: and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

* Prayer of Adoration

* Opening Hymn #481 Praise the Lord, God’s Glories Show

Invitation to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Loving God, you have planted us like a vineyard on a fertile hill. You cleared away the stones, planted us with choice vines, and kept watch over us by night and day. But we have not yielded the good fruit that you expected or desired. We are overgrown with sin, choked with unhealthy ways of thinking and living. Forgive us, we pray.

Uproot our evil, prune away our sin, and shower upon us the gift of your grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Silent Prayer)

Prayer for Illumination

Anthem The Heavens are Telling (from The Creation) Franz Joseph Haydn Soloists: Kristin Shafer, soprano; Will Upham, tenor; Preston Rogers, bass (1732-1809)

The Heavens are telling the glory of God, The wonder of his work displays the firmament.

The day that is coming speaks to the day, The night that is gone to following night.

The Heavens are telling the glory of God, The wonder of his work displays the firmament.

In all the lands resounds the word, Never unperceived, ever understood.

The Heavens are telling the glory of God, The wonder of his work displays the firmament.

Text: John Milton (1608-1674)

Second Scripture Lesson

Sermon

Psalm 19 (p. 488)

Rev. Michael M. Samson

Reviving the Soul

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7)

Moment of Silent Meditation

We Give Thanks to God

* Affirmation of Faith Rev. Madison M. VanVeelen from Song of Faith, United Church of Canada

We sing of God the Spirit, who from the beginning has swept over the face of creation, animating all energy and matter and moving in the human heart. We sing of God the Spirit, faithful and untameable, who is creatively and redemptively active in the world. The Spirit challenges us to celebrate the holy not only in what is familiar, but also in that which seems foreign. We sing of God the Spirit, who speaks our prayers of deepest longing and enfolds our concerns and confessions, transforming us and the world. Amen.

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Invitation to Discipleship and Generosity

Offertory In Native Worth and Honor Clad (from The Creation) Franz Joseph Haydn Will Upham, tenor

In native worth and honor clad, with beauty, courage, strength adorn’d, to heav’n erect and tall he stands a man, the Lord and King of nature all.

The large and arched brow sublime of wisdom deep declares the seat, and in his eyes with brightness shines the soul, the breath and image of his God.

With fondness leans upon his breast the partner for him form’d, a woman fair and graceful spouse. Her softly smiling virgin looks, of flow’ry spring the mirror, bespeak him love, and joy, and bliss.

Text: John Milton
