Choral Call to Worship Be Still and Know That I Am God John L. Bell Sanctuary Choir; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor (b. 1949)

* Call to Worship

Rev. Madison M. VanVeelen

One: Come, all who are weary, all who seek refuge from the storms of life.

All: We come, longing for God’s presence, searching for peace in the chaos.

One: The winds may howl, the earth may shake, and the fire may blaze.

All: But the Lord is not always in the mighty display.

One: In the stillness, in the quiet, in the whisper—God speaks.

All: Let us open our hearts, attune our ears, and listen.

One: God calls us out of fear, out of isolation, into a life renewed by purpose.

All: We are not alone. God is with us, and the faithful are near.

One: Come, let us worship the one whose voice is love, whose presence is peace.

All: Let us listen for the whisper of God in the silence.

Invitation to Confession

Kyrie Kyrie (from Symphony, no. 9, II) Antonin Dvo

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Prayer of Confession

God, we confess that we do not always understand your ways. We are easily discouraged when life takes unexpected turns and our carefully laid plans and dreams come to nothing. We admit that we are quick to give up when things get difficult, and quick to question your presence and your plan.

Forgive us. Grant us patience to wait for your timing. Open our eyes to recognize your leading in our lives, to listen for your gentle whisper when we least expect it. And then give us courage to step out in faith and obedience, trusting in your leading even when we cannot yet see the outcome. In the name of Jesus, we pray. (Silent Prayer)

Assurance of God’s Grace

Children’s Anthem

Jesus, Jesus, Let Us Tell You traditional Cherub Choir & Carol Choir Orff Ensemble arr. Richard L. Van Oss Carol Baker, conductor; Tom Ristine, guitar; Patrick Pauloski, piano (b. 1953)

Jesus, Jesus, let us tell you what we know; you have given us your Spirit; we love you so.

Jesus, Jesus, may your Spirit help us show to our family, friends, and neighbors; we love you so.

Jesus, Jesus, with your Spirit let us go to the ones who need your mercy; we love you so.

Love, love, love, love, Christians this is your call: love your neighbors as ourselves, for God loves us all.

Anthem Nearer, My God, To Thee

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee. E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me; Still all my song shall be: nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee.

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest is found; Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee.

There let the way appear steps unto heav’n; All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv’n; Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Text: Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848)

Second Scripture Lesson

Lowell Mason (1792-1872) arr. Mark Patterson (b. 1969)

1 Kings 19:1-18 (p. 348)

Sermon Rev. David T. Kim

A Whisper in the Dark

“Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind, and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake, and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.”

(1 Kings 19:11b-12)

Moment of Silent Meditation

We Give Thanks to God

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
