Robin Mathis will share her stewardship testimony and we’ll welcome as our guest preacher Dr. Paul Baxley, executive coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. October 6 is also World Communion Day and we’ll participate with our global church family in sharing the Lord’s Supper. In our 4 p.m. All Together service, Rev. Josh Scott begins a new series series called Living Out Scary Movies, and part 1, Burned Alive, will look at Leviticus 2. This will be another great Sunday!
STEWARDSHIP AS WITNESS PROTECTION This week, we’re kicking off the theme of “Witness Protection: Giving that ensures we can fulfill God’s mission.” We’ll focus on the ways stewardship protects our ability to share God’s hope, peace, love and joy with those far away and close to home. During the four Sundays in October, we’ll hear personal testimonies of how God guides us through our stewardship discernment, as well as sermons illustrating how SPdL grows in worship, community, mission and discipleship when we are faithful stewards. In the coming days, you’ll receive our stewardship mailing that includes your pledge card. We hope you’ll be in prayer for your role as protectors of our collective witness.

In 1913, this postcard was published illustrating the Second and Ponce de Leon Avenue Baptist Churches. During this time in history, postcards showcasing more than one famous Atlanta building were popular collectables. The Second Baptist Church was built in 1893 across the street from the Georgia State Capitol, and the Ponce de Leon Avenue Baptist Church was built in 1906 at the corner of Ponce de Leon and Piedmont Avenues. God was providential and knew that these two great churches would merge together in 1932 thus creating Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. Neither of these buildings exist today, but their beauty is remembered on this postcard displayed in our Heritage Room.

Strengthening our partnership with Garden Hills Elementary School Recently, Dock Hollingsworth and Heather Webb met again with the Garden Hills Administration Team again to continue discussing new opportunities for Second-Ponce to support their work. Below are some of the many ways our partnership with GHES will continue to grow in the coming months. Family Fun Day | Saturday, October 19| 10 a.m.–2 p.m.: We need folks to serve food, supervise inflatables and strike up neighborly conversations with members of the Garden Hills family. If you’d like to volunteer, email Josh Scott at jscott@spdl.org. Adopt a Classroom: Second-Ponce will be adopting two classes this year at Garden Hills. We will share resources and volunteer with them in the hopes of meeting needs, improving student learning and encouraging teachers. If you would like to help plan and implement this new project, email Heather Webb at hwebb@spdl.org. Everybody Wins “Power Lunch” Reading Buddies: We currently have five folks from Second-Ponce serving as Reading Buddies during lunch this year at Garden Hills. They are doing such a great job that the school would love more volunteers from our church. The reading is done in the auditorium, so you don’t have to compete with a loud lunchroom.
