FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PROVE THE TITHE

By David Hull Where did this name, “Prove the Tithe” come from?

The title for the day is a reference to Malachi 3:10. In the King James Version we read, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” We are not the ones who are proving anything; God wants the chance to “prove” to us, or to demonstrate to us, the blessings that can come through obedient tithing.

What is a tithe?

A tithe is when we give 10% of our income to God. What is the storehouse that is mentioned in Malachi 3:10?

The phrase right after the word “storehouse” helps us to understand this. God talks about having meat in “mine (my) house.” The storehouse is therefore God’s house. In Jesus’ day God’s house was the temple in Jerusalem. Read Matthew 21:12-13 to see how Jesus declares the Temple to be God’s house. For us, the church is God’s house. Read Ephesians 2:19-22 for a beautiful description of how the church is “God’s household.” The tithe is for God’s house so that the Kingdom of God can be advanced through the ministries of the church.

What should I do if I normally tithe with a once-a-month offering?

The purpose of this entire experience is to raise the level of tithing participation for the entire congregation, not to cause any current tithers any concern. Here are some choices for you: Do something a little differently this month. Write two checks and bring your tithe for one week on April 7 and your tithe for three weeks on April 14.

Write two checks and date one for April 7 and the other for April 14. Put them in the same envelope and bring them both on April 7. Our wonderful Finance Office can keep them straight!

Do nothing differently. Bring your tithe for the whole month on Sunday, April 7, and don’t worry about it. We promise that we won’t suddenly assume that you will be giving that much each week.

DEADLY SINS, A 2-PART SPdLU SERIES Wednesdays, March 20, 27, April 3 & 10 at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall The latest SPdLU Bible studies will focus on the “Seven Deadly Sins” as seen in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Looking through the lenses of this favorite story of Jesus, we will gaze into the mirror of our own sin and find opportunities for repentance during this holy season.

MEET BILL GABBARD OUR NEW MINISTER OF MUSIC I am happy to announce that the Music Minister Search Committee has unanimously and enthusiastically asked me to extend a call to Mr. William J. Gabbard.

After more than twenty-nine years’ experience as a tenor vocalist/soloist with the Soldiers’ Bill & Mary Ann Gabbard Chorus, Bill is retiring from his service as Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army, moving to Atlanta and transitioning into music ministry with us beginning July 1. A move to Atlanta will be a move home for Bill's wife, Mary Lynn, and it will surely be great for them to be near a major airport because they have five grown children and several grandchildren scattered around the country.

Our musicians on the search committee are ecstatic about Bill’s musical ability. I can’t weigh in on the music part, but I am so impressed with his heart and eagerness to serve the church and lead in worship. Although his background is performance, as a worship leader, he will help us all move more fully into the presence of God. Last Thursday, we shared via churchwide email an introduction and biography written in Bill's own words. If you haven't already, I encourage you to take a moment to read more about his life and family.

I can’t wait for Bill and Mary Lynn’s arrival; they will be wonderful additions to our fellowship. Pray for them as they prepare to sell the Annapolis, MD house they have lived in for 25 years and make the transition to share life with us.

By Church Historian John Roma In 2017, to celebrate the 80th birthday of Dr. Ryland Knight the Sanctuary, the Dr. Ryland Knight Room was dedicated as a tribute to our church's first pastor. He served from 1932 until 1945. Dr. Knight guided the church through the merger and the Great Depression, and the Sanctuary was constructed and dedicated during his tenure.

The Dr. Ryland Knight Room was once the church chapel, and a portrait of Dr. Knight is on the wall to the right as you enter the room. Second-Ponce uses this wonderful space for meetings and receptions.
