Hopeful Waiting 2020 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL

HOPEFUL Waiting As we began preparations for this devotional in August, our country, and particularly our state of Georgia, were in turmoil.

We faced a health and community crisis due to COVID-19. As experts worked toward a vaccine, we found ourselves in unprecedented, and frankly frightening, circumstances. Across the country, we were ordered to quarantine in our homes leaving cities shut down and businesses on the edge ruin. We depended even more on medical professionals and essential workers in our groceries, pharmacies and delivery services. People lost their jobs or had their working hours reduced. Parents were forced into homeschooling their children. “Zoom fatigue” became a new term in our vernacular. Teachers were stressed beyond measure. Graduations and weddings were canceled or scaled back. People faced illness or hospitalization and were quarantined without the support of family. Many lost loved ones and were unable to hold funerals or memorials. Churches, sources of hope and community for many, were shuttered.

But COVID-19 was not the only crisis looming as we began working on this book. There was widespread unrest as Americans responded to racial injustice. Some in our communities feared for their lives as they simply walked in their neighborhoods.

Some felt threatened by protests while others protested. A contentious Presidental election was dividing our country, and in many cases, families and friendships. Political divisions and acrimony continued unabated.

Through all this chaos, hope seemed in short supply many days. Grief was near in lost experiences and changed relationships.

Times were uncertain; many were fearful. Anxiety loomed closer than we liked; sometimes, it overwhelmed us.

The people of Scripture were faced with similar challenges. Israelites were waiting for a Messiah during uncertain times and the early Church was navigating perilous circumstances trying to live out their new faith. Injustice was prominent during the Roman occupation of Jerusalem. Racial tensions and gender inequity were a part of everyday life. Disease and plagues that the people did not understand eventually led to loss of life and livelihood.

Nevertheless, we find stories and Scriptures that remind us as Christians that we are “hopefully waiting” for Jesus, our Messiah, the Son of God, to return. In this devotional, a mixture of traditional Advent prophecies, the Christmas story in Luke and other meaningful passages from throughout the Bible were chosen to guide our thoughts as we reflect on our experiences of waiting and hope. Our desire was to provide a thoughtful time of reflection and encouragement for every reader.

The four Sundays preceding Christmas Day are observed in the Christian tradition as Advent—a time used to prepare for the coming of the Christ Child. The celebration includes traditional themes of hope, peace, joy and love which we will experience in worship here at Second-Ponce. Due to “social distancing” (another new term for our modern lexicon), the Advent and Christmas seasons will be extremely different and challenging. We may have to forgo large-scale family traditions, cut back on gift giving and cancel annual parties and musical celebrations. This year we have perhaps an even more important reason to live in a discipline of hope and to do so with intention and purpose.

The word advent comes from the Latin adventus, which translates from the Greek parousia as “coming.” It is a time of renewal each year, a time to prepare one’s heart for God’s incarnation. The encouraging and victorious news for followers of Christ is that we have hope! Jesus’ triumph over sin and death has enabled us to live, even in the midst of uncertainty and fear, knowing that God is victorious!

In the spirit of “hopeful waiting,” the community of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church offers this compilation of Advent devotions. It is our desire for you to be encouraged by the stories of faithfulness we hear from our members.

HOW TO Use this Devotional This book provides a devotional thought for the twenty-seven days that span from the first Sunday of Advent (November 29) through Christmas Day. A short prayer is included to guide your time with God. As you stop each day to read, reflect and pray, take time to breathe deeply and settle your mind. Pause and listen to God’s voice. Ask God to speak to you this Advent season as you expectantly and “wait hopefully” for the Christ Child.

You might want to read and reflect in solitude as an individual. You could share the devotions with your spouse or family before a meal or as a closing of the day. Or, you may want to leave the book on your desk—intentionally taking a short break during the workday.

In the back, you’ll find “Where I See Hope,” a note-taking page for jotting down your most hope-filled moments of the 2020 Advent season. Return to these memories on days when hope feels distant and share them with others who may need an extra measure of comfort.

CLING TO THE Truth of Gods Love

Focal Scripture: Lamentations 3:19–26 (You may also want to read this passage in The Message translation) During Advent season, we focus on the birth of Jesus and rejoice in the hope of the Messiah’s arrival. Yet, when problems surround us, we may not feel hopeful. The Israelites were exiled in Babylon, enslaved and suffering, and experiencing soul-wrenching hopelessness. This year our lives were also turned upside down by a worldwide pandemic causing illness, isolation, closed schools and churches financial losses and many deaths. Peaceful demonstrations against injustices all too often turned into riots and violence. Divisions worsened throughout society and government. No wonder we find ourselves feeling hopeless, and even questioning God. It is exhausting thinking about it, and even worse for those directly experiencing suffering and loss.

Thankfully, the Bible tells us how to once again experience hope. This Scripture tells us to remember to cling to the truth that God’s love and mercy are always available. He is with us no matter how difficult life becomes or how hopeless we feel. As we turn to God, call to Him in our despondency and rely upon Him, we experience His peace and loving care. God enters into our suffering with us, renewing our hope and opening our eyes to His goodness and blessings. The coming of the Messiah ushered in true righteousness, justice and peace that will one day be fully on display to God’s glory. It is in these truths that we can hope even in the midst of tribulation. Oh, how good it is to be loved by God. Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You so much for Your unending love for us and for sending Your Son in whom we experience salvation, healing and hope. Help us, Lord, as we seek to walk each day in Your ways as light and love to those in need and as vessels of hope to all. Amen.

She was commissioned and sent by a former church to serve for several years as a missionary in Nigeria ministering to the poor, especially those suffering from HIV/AIDS. SCATTERED Like Seeds

Focal Scripture: John 16:31–33 (You may also want to read this passage in The Message translation) Would you rather be a branch on a sturdy vine or a tiny seed floating through the air and hoping to land in a place with good soil, enough rain and plenty of sunlight? These are the kinds of questions that often come up during the morning meeting in my three-year-old classroom, and it is amazing how much interesting conversation and scientific learning they yield. Teaching three year olds is perhaps the part of my life where I can most consistently identify with Jesus. I am constantly answering questions, reiterating important points and exercising great restraint because I know it is best for children to learn by doing things that I could more efficiently do for them, and exploring things in ways that might lead to a little bit of trouble.

But efficiency is not the goal and trouble is not the end of the story—not in the classroom and not in the Kingdom of God. Jesus warned His disciples that they would be “scattered like seeds.” When we are scattered like seeds there is a place for us to take root and be whole. Changed, perhaps, but whole and at peace. Jesus shows us the way and invites us to root ourselves in the unwavering love of God; so that whatever the world tells us about who we are or ought to be, we are never alone and are always enough.

Prayer: Gracious God, give us the patience and courage to root ourselves in the richness of Your love so that we can grow into the people You created us to be—whole and at peace. Amen.

WAIT FOR IT—Dont Rush It

Focal Scripture: Genesis 17:1–21, 18:11–15, 21:1–6 Waiting. It doesn’t come easy and it doesn’t come naturally. We like action right away. Let me do something—anything—to solve the current problem.

As I write these words, we are still waiting and have been waiting for some time to just be ourselves again. To go places, do things, see people. Wondering if the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob hears our prayers.

Notice in today’s Scripture the things that are unsaid. The main characters have already taken control of their situation. No waiting around for Sarah, who needs a child almost as badly as Abraham does. Ishmael has already been born through the brutality that was slavery and yet, Hagar, alone in the wilderness, has spoken to God and been given the same blessing that Abraham received: descendants too numerous to count.

It was years after Ishmael was born that God and Abraham had the covenant conversation found in Genesis 17. And yet, God insists that the covenant will be completed through the union of Abraham and Sarah.

Sarah laughs to probably keep from crying. Her heart has been broken too many times before. And make no mistake— Abraham laughed too because the absurdity of it all—babies born to 90-year-old women? Laughable. And yet a new son, given the name that literally means laughter, is the beginning of the patriarchs that lead us to Jesus Christ.

We are now in the season of Advent—the “wait for it” season. Christmas is coming, but it is not here yet. Wait for it—don’t rush it.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we are grateful for this season of waiting; help us to be patient as we await the birth of the Christ Child.

In Your name we pray, Amen.

PREPARE A WAY in the Wilderness

Focal Scripture: Isaiah 40:1–5 I must admit when I first read these verses, I was a little perplexed as to what I could say. I decided to hold the Scripture in my heart until I was ready to respond to God’s word. Then, sure enough, it became clear and it was so simple—we all need to prepare a way in the wilderness of our lives for Christ to inhabit our hearts.

When I think of a valley, I think about the “valley of the shadow of death.” I think about the grace of God that can raise us from the valley of death and fear. When I think of mountains, I think about the amazing power of God that can bring down and take away our worries. When I think of crooked paths and rough places, I think about the amazing love that can straighten and smooth every ache and every pain and turn them into joy.

When I reflect on preparing the way of the Lord, I think of all these things God can do, and I think of the great comfort of “Christ in us, the hope of glory!”

Prayer: Dear Lord, let there be no valley that cannot be exalted, no path that cannot be made straight to make way for Christ to live in us. Grant us the blessing of hope in our hearts. Amen.

BRINGING Good News

Focal Scripture: Isaiah 40:9–11 Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere! How often does it seem like bad news is shared that way? Imagine what it would be like if good or even great news was spread that way. Too often it seems bad news gets shouted at a much louder volume.

The shepherds received the Good News from angels proclaiming on high. Then, after they saw Jesus in the manger, they went and told everyone they could. So many Christmas mornings start with a child yelling about what gifts are under the tree. I am quite sure the excitement of the kids can rival that of the shepherds that first Christmas.

How about us today? Are we going to tell it on the mountain? Are we sharing our story and our good news? I think back to my year—I was laid off earlier this year. It was a very difficult time, but I knew I had family, church members and friends all praying for me. When I finally received a job offer, I made sure to shout the good news. We are called to tell the Good News to all. The good news includes when the Lord moves and works in our lives. In the season of gift giving, we should also be proclaiming the gifts that God has given to us.

Prayer: Father God, please help us remember this season to share the Good News which You have given to us. May we be bold in sharing our stories and giving of ourselves. In Your name we pray, Amen.

WILL 2020 Ever be Over

Focal Scripture: Isaiah 40:27–31 Will 2020 ever be over? I know I am not alone in wanting to hurry up and get past this crazy year. First, our family moved into a new home (with all the ensuing physical and emotional trauma), then COVID-19 hit and everything shut down, and then— in the midst of it all—we sent our baby off to college. It is exhausting trying to keep it all together!

Then I remember we are all in the same boat. Well maybe not an identical boat, but we are all in this situation together and must try to survive. And not merely survive but help each other make it through to the other side—to health, sanity, peace and love. How can we do that when we are just so tired and sad from all the news and chaos around us?

We must look to God for help. Put our faith in the Lord and not in people. “Do you not know? Have you not heard? He will not grow tired or weary.” He alone can give us the strength we need to get through uncertain times. If we trust Him, He will renew our strength, we will soar as eagles and not grow weary or faint from exhaustion.

This Christmas season, I hope you will find peace and not give in to exhaustion and sadness. There is hope if we only trust Him. As we focus on the birth of the Christ Child, we can find renewed strength and can soar as eagles into the new year.

Prayer: Dear God, please help us to remain hopeful and faithful in this place of waiting. Help us to remember that Your grace is sufficient to sustain us every day, as long as it takes. Amen.

JESUS HAS Won the Battle

Focal Scripture: Psalm 118:1–6 We are all facing things right now where we need to be reminded that the love of the Lord endures forever. The pandemic has put a strain on all of us in many ways. It could be related to work, relationships or education. We begin to question why these things are happening and what is behind them. We will never go unnoticed by God. It is in Jesus Christ that we have the ultimate victory, and what we do know is that these things are preparing us to live with God. The good news is that the steadfast love of the Lord endures forever! He is always with us no matter how heavy our load may be. He will never give us more than we can handle. It may seem that way sometimes, but He is on guard to help along the way.

We just have to talk to Him and believe.

As we enjoy this Advent season, we must remember there is nothing anyone can do or anything that may happen that goes unnoticed by God whose steadfast love endures forever. It is in Jesus Christ that we have the ultimate victory. He has won the battle for us.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for Your enduring love. I ask for Your continued strength and wisdom to practice what I know to be right. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

CLICKING THE Mute Button

Focal Scripture: Luke 1:5–25 As a talkative person, I am almost never at a loss for words; however, I have found myself on mute many times this year. In 2020, I have done a lot of ministry on the video conferencing platform Zoom and my microphone has been accidentally muted more than once. On mute, I have shared insights about God and recounted funny stories. Each time my listener looked confused, I realized that I was muted and would simply click to unmute myself.

Unmuting was not easy for Zechariah. The angel tells him that he and Elizabeth will have a son named John. Zechariah cannot wrap his mind around this news. It seems impossible after enduring many difficult years of infertility. He is afraid to hope again because his heart is worn and tired. Zechariah questions the angel wondering how this will be possible. In response, Gabriel clicks Zechariah’s mute button and tells him that he will not speak again until it happens. Engaging Zechariah’s mute button was a gift from God. Zechariah needed the silence for his worn heart to hope again.

It has been a hard year and difficult to find hope in 2020. Like Zechariah, we may need the gift of silence to prepare our worn hearts to hope again. This Advent, may we find time to mute ourselves and our noisy lives each day. As we listen for God’s voice in silence, our hearts locate the hope of Christ and recognize what God wants to make possible in our midst once again.

Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus. Come fill our hearts with Your hope once again. Amen.

GOD THINKS Toward Us

Focal Scripture: Jeremiah 29:1–14 (You may want to read the passage using the New Living Translation) In Jeremiah 29, the prophet was writing to exiled Jews in Babylon. He was clearing up the false expectations and predictions they had received from false prophets and psychics in Babylon. The most prominent part of this passage of Scripture is verses 11–14 focusing on God’s thoughts about us and His plan for us.

2020 has been a year full of circumstances that may leave us confused by what God is doing in, through and around us. From living through a pandemic that is claiming the lives of thousands to witnessing what feels like never-ending instances of racial injustice, we have had many reasons to search for God. Charles Spurgeon once said, “The Lord not only thinks of you but toward you. His thoughts are all drifting your way.”

These verses and this quote reminded me that while I may not always know what God is thinking toward me, I can trust that He is thinking of me, and it is far more critical that He knows those thoughts than I do. In times of uncertainty, we must turn to the One who has the master plan and trust He will fulfill His plans for us. And unlike the Jews in exile, we have the reminder in this Advent season that Jesus will not only be born but will die so we can be certain of our eternal life in heaven.

Prayer: Father, we thank You that You have a plan for each of our lives. Help us to trust in Your plan even when it is unclear and the world confuses us. Amen!

HOPE NEVER Disappoints Us

Focal Scripture: Romans 5:1–5 Christmas is going to look a little different for our family this year. It’s not simply because of COVID-19, it’s because our family is growing by one more! After 13 years of praying for the man who would be God’s best for me and my children, he has arrived—and with a ring! (Shout if you know God is good!) His arrival is a promise and a hope that has finally come to pass. It has energized the hearts of my family as a wonderful reminder that God is steadfast and true and that hope in Him will never end in disappointment.

That is what Paul is talking about in Romans 5:1–5. He is giving us the equation of hope. Our faith in Christ brings us peace with God. With that peace, we can walk through trials knowing that not only will these things produce perseverance in us, but also character and hope. Hope that the God who has blessed us with His Spirit, His love and salvation through Christ will deliver on His promises. Hope grounded in the knowledge that the love of God never disappoints. Just like the hope found in His promise of a savior to the people of Israel over 2,000 years ago.

The people of God prayed and waited without a prophecy or a sign of the Messiah for 400 years. Then, at the perfect moment in history, God delivered on His promise. Those who had been watching and waiting for a savior saw their hope realized in the birth of Jesus Christ.

For what are you holding out hope? Be encouraged today that God is faithful to see that hope realized. God will come through for you, just like He did on that first Christmas so many years ago.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that in this season of Advent and expectancy, we can count on the hope we have in You, that You will see Your promises through to completion and that we will never be disappointed in the things You have spoken over our lives. Amen.

HOPEFUL WAITING, Waiting Hopefully

Focal Scripture: Romans 8:18–25 The Scripture verse of Romans 8:25 reminds me of an event involving my beloved mother who inspired me and so many others with her “deep-water” Christian beliefs. One of mother’s hopes was that she would never die in the nursing home—the only long-term care facility in her small south Georgia county—as her father did. But a time came (in early 2001) when she required 24-hour-a-day care and she had to be placed in this facility.

Within a short period of time, mother’s mental status significantly declined. During a visit, I addressed her as “mother” and she responded, “I am not your mama.” I remember crying when she said this and looked at me with no recognition in her eyes. I hopefully waited and waited hopefully that her memory would return.

In another visit several weeks later, mother turned to me in an alert manner and stated, “When you went to nursing school in 1965, when and how did you stop being so homesick and lonesome?” Wow! Thirty-six years later she remembered her oldest child’s anguish of going off to school alone and being extremely homesick. She had mentally returned to being my mother!

This illustrates Romans 8:25 for me: “If we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently” (NIV). I had been blessed by being patient and believing that my mother would once again remember me as her child.

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, we thank You for sustaining us during times of “hopeful waiting and waiting hopefully.” Grant us the patience to learn to wait. Amen.

WE ARE the Lucky Ones

Focal Scripture: Hebrews 6:19a In my late 40s, I started to question God—Was I good enough? It was not a passing thought but one that bothered me deep in my soul. For me, knowing God’s word was always a part of my life, so I gave God all the reasons why I thought I was good. But I still felt empty. After months of seeking answers through prayer and searching the Scriptures, I received my answer.

One day while driving home from work, very distraught with the pressures of life, I heard myself call out to God, “Do You love me?” I do not remember turning on the radio, nor do I remember having programmed a Christian radio station. But all at once I heard acapella voices singing, “God loves you.” I cannot tell you the title of the song or remember the melody, and it really does not matter, for at that moment in my life I felt complete. I knew I was good enough because God loved me.

God has made us promises and God does not lie. He has promised to protect us, be our strength, answer our questions, provide for us, give us peace and always love us. So, during the many crises of life, we who love God are the lucky ones. Our foundation of faith is set and our hope is anchored because we know we are loved despite life’s circumstances.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for those who do not know God’s love, or His promises. I pray they open their hearts and minds to God’s word and find His love. Amen.

WHAT IS THISAll About

Focal Scripture: Psalm 42:1–5 We all go through times feeling separated from God. Just as the psalmist tells how the deer pants for water to quench its thirst, we, too, have a longing to be in a right relationship with God. This past year we have been separated from family, friends and our church family by the COVID-19 pandemic. And like the psalmist, we are wondering “What is all this about? Where are You, God and when can we be together again to worship You?” For us, it is remembering how things were before COVID-19—going to our Open Door Sunday School class, enjoying the fellowship and studying together, followed by the worship service. It was such a joy. We long for that again.

Then the psalmist says, “Why are you downcast, O, my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.” We can look and see how God reveals Himself in so many ways. It can be the loving concern and prayers from fellow Christians, a kind and caring word from the girl restocking the bread shelf in the grocery store or the feeling of God’s presence and peace within us. Remember to put your hope in God, our Savior.

Prayer: Lord, sometimes we are weak in our faith and we begin to thirst for spiritual feelings. Then, we remember all the things You have done for us and Your daily presence with us. We thank You for quenching our thirst. Amen.

WALKINGAmos

Focal Scripture: 2 Peter 3:8–9 Our dog Amos, a black, white and brown Corgi, loves his walks. He needs at least two a day—one in the morning and one in the evening (but he will never turn down a third or a fourth). He also likes it best when everyone is home with him. When we know we are going to disappoint him by delaying his walk or going somewhere, we have gotten into a habit of telling him, “We’ll be back in just one minute … one minute.” And we usually hold up an index finger to signal one minute.

I do not know if dogs have any concept of time, but I do think Amos knows that we will always come back even though it may be in 30 minutes or three hours. I also hope he knows that we will always take care of him or make provisions for him to be cared for if we need to be away.

As believers, I think we should have that same kind of confidence. The Lord will provide—He will take care of us even when we feel alone. We have His word, the Holy Spirit and each other to help see us through whatever we’re experiencing.

Peter tells us the Lord is not slow about His promise. However, His timing may not be our timing, so we need to patiently wait on the Lord, just as He patiently waits on us.

Prayer: Dear God, in this season of hopeful waiting … whether it be for the magic of Christmas day, for relief of anxiety, fear or even pain, for the end of this global health crisis or even for some return to normalcy … we pray that You will help us learn and grow, increasing our patience, our faith and our love for You and each other. As we look toward Christmas, we thank You for the Christ Child and for everything You so generously provide us. Amen.

BEAUTIFUL Feet

Focal Scripture: Isaiah 52:7–9 One of my very favorite films is the 1981 Oscar winner for Best Picture, Chariots of Fire. One of the principal characters in that great movie is the Scottish olympian and track athlete, Eric Liddell. He was also a dedicated Christian believer, born in China to missionary parents and devoted to following their footsteps. Liddell gave up running in his favorite track event at the 1924 Paris Olympics because the qualifying heats fell on a Sunday. His principled stand became worldwide news. God provided, however, and he scored a gold medal in another event.

Liddell retired from sports and returned to China, fulfilling his vocation as a missionary. He was once asked about giving up sports glory for the hard work of serving the Church. He said, “It’s natural for a chap to think over all that sometimes, but I’m glad I’m at the work I’m engaged in now. A fellow’s life counts for far more at this than the other.”

As much as Eric Liddell loved sports, he loved serving Jesus more. As Christian missionaries began to leave China at the outbreak of World War II, he opted to stay and continue to serve persecuted Chinese Christians. He endured many hardships and was eventually taken prisoner by the Japanese. He developed an inoperable brain tumor that was probably aggravated by his poor physical condition in captivity. He died in early 1945, several months before his prison camp was liberated. One of his last requests was to hear the hymn Be Still My Soul played by the prison camp’s small musical ensemble.

Liddell’s legacy and example of dedication and service to Christ have inspired many. He glorified God first in his athletic ability then in his devoted service in foreign lands. His “beautiful feet” were a blessing to him. We may not be world class athletes, but we all have our own gifts and abilities—our own “beautiful feet!” May we glorify God with those abilities and gifts, now and always.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You gave each one of us abilities and gifts to be used for Your Kingdom and for Your glory. Teach us every day to identify opportunities to use those gifts and abilities, serving others and serving You. For Your sake we pray, Amen.

WAITING in Hope

Focal Scripture: Hebrews 10:19–25 (You may also want to read this passage in The Message translation) I was 12 years old, and it had been a long, lonely summer. On July 1, my father entered the hospital terribly ill. He had been sick throughout my childhood, but that year he was hospitalized for a month. My mother continued to work, spending her evenings at the hospital. I was left alone at the house waiting.

Yet through it all, I clung to the hope that daddy would return home. I hoped, I prayed and I believed he would get better and life would return to normal. That July I learned to wait. His progress often seemed like “one step forward, two steps back.” But eventually he was well enough to come home. And the assurance of homecoming is what kept me going as the days dragged on.

We have an even more sure hope in God. But the wait to see the fulfillment of our hope may seem quite delayed. Hebrews 10:23 tells us to “keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going.” We all have times of doubt and questions. We all have days when we wonder if God is still listening. It is in those times we need to “keep a firm grip.” He promised never to leave or forsake us. Because God is holy, God’s promises are sure. Hold on to God and trust the timing to our Heavenly Father.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as the Jewish people waited for the coming of the Messiah, we wait for His return and the time when all things will be made new. Help us to hold on to Your promises while we do Kingdom work and wait. Amen.

HOPE IN New Birth

Focal Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3–4a I Peter 1:3 speaks of a new birth, which is a familiar theme at Christmastime. At Christmas, we turn our thoughts to the birth of Jesus. He was God’s perfect Son. Peter writes about the “new birth” that God has given us. This birth is quite different from the birth of Jesus at Christmas because this “new birth” represents a transformation from a sinful life into a perfect life that is made possible for us by the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus, as the Son of God, was perfect throughout His life on earth. Yet even though the “new birth” that we experience is different from the virgin birth of Jesus, both are worthy of celebration. At Christmas we see the beginning of God’s plan for redemption through the birth of Jesus and celebrate that with songs and gifts. As Christians we can also add our personal thanksgiving that Jesus’ birth has brought new birth and everlasting life to us.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we thank You that we can celebrate Jesus’ birth again this year. We are also grateful that we have the opportunity for “new birth” and salvation because of Jesus being faithful—from birth to death—to Your plan for redemption.

Drew and Nancy Kelly are long-time members of Second-Ponce and grateful for this church community that has nurtured their family including their boys, Rob and Kevin. Drew has served on multiple committees and with the mission trips to Miami.

Nancy has served faithfully in children’s ministry for many years. The family is grateful to expand their Christmas celebration this year with Rob’s wife, Melissa.

GRIEF & Hope

Focal Scripture: Hebrews 11:1 Be kind. Everyone is grieving. The loss of a loved one is the greatest grief we must endure. If not for the promise of eternal life, our grief might never end. As Christmas approaches, you may not be grieving the loss of a loved one, but in 2020, you may be grieving other things—a missed graduation, a cancelled prom, a delayed vacation, postponed visits with friends and relatives or just the simple act of attending church. Several months ago, I had the opportunity to walk into our sanctuary. I was alone, and there were no lights on. I sat in my regular pew and prayed a simple prayer, “Lord, bring us back together soon.”

Grief is defined as “deep sorrow; the normal process of reacting to loss.” It seems we have lost so much in 2020. How do we keep going and move forward? Grief mixed with love allows hope to enter, and the words of Hebrews 11:1 remind us that faith assures us of things hoped for even when we are too disappointed or too helpless to see.

As we grieve the loss of things big and small in 2020, we have the blessed assurance of hope for things not seen and the precious gift of God’s love.

In “Jessye’s Carol” by Donald Fraser, this line stands out to me, “Peace and love and hope abide, this Christmastide.” May it be so.

Prayer: Lord, renew our hope by strengthening our faith. Amen.

TRICKLE-DOWN Truths

Focal Scripture: John 11:25–27 (You may also want to read the entire Lazarus story in John 11:1–44) Believing will set us free!

Our Savior came to earth to testify to God’s truth. Jesus’ life on earth, death on the cross and resurrection are the ways God chose to have mercy on us. God sacrificed his Son in the greatest gesture of love the world will ever know.

There are certain truths God presents to us in the Bible that are essential. They are so critical that every aspect of our spiritual well-being depends on our belief in them. I like to think of them as “trickle-down truths.” Our orientation toward them will “trickle down” to every aspect of life. The Bible’s teaching about the hope of the resurrection is one of those truths.

Everything else in life will depend on how we are oriented to the hope of the resurrection.

The Lord promises to “give life to our mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in us” (Romans 8:11). For those who believe, it means that we can be resurrected from the dead and the fear of death should be conquered in us. We can have a life filled with confidence, peace and joy. We do not have to wait to rejoice in the resurrection. Just as Jesus called to Lazarus to step out of the tomb, we are called to step outside of our comfort zone, our protected space, and let go. Freeing our hearts and minds of personal addictions, judgments, prejudice and obstinance allows us to move towards the light of the world—His glorious light. It gives us the life that only Jesus offers and living that truth will set us free.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we thank You for the promise of eternal life through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray that You will guide us through the unchartered waters of this life and fill us with everlasting peace. Amen.

JESUS NEVER Lets Us Go

Focal Scripture: Romans 8:38–39 This fall, our family experienced the exciting milestone of sending our oldest child off to college! We can remember being told by other parents when our son was a newborn how quickly the time would fly by. As move-in day drew closer, the excitement gave way to anxiousness as we found ourselves getting ready to let go. Had we prepared our son to navigate a new and unknown environment independent from mom and dad? After we dropped him off, we were comforted by the fact that Jesus never lets us go! Jesus’ unwavering love is always there for him no matter the distance. Our family knows that while we may be physically apart, our love for each other remains strong, just as God’s love for our family never surrenders.

This Advent season, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, these verses tell us that God sent Jesus as the ultimate show of His love for us. When our son comes home, and our family is together again during the Christmas season, we will be reminded of how blessed we have been by God. We are all His beloved children, and He is always with us. We take comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from God’s love through Christ.

Prayer: Dear God, during this Advent season may we always be mindful that there is nothing on earth that can separate us from Your love and that Christmas day is the ultimate example of Your love for us. Amen.

BEING GLAD in God

Focal Scripture: Psalm 33:18–22 The Bible is full of examples of famine, pestilence, illness, disease and bondage. In modern times we depend on technology, innovation and science to alter environmental conditions and respond to diseases that can harm us. In 2020, we became aware of the limitations of our knowledge and frustrated by our inability to quickly eradicate disease. During the same time, we became painfully aware of the inequities in our society and our frailties as people.

It is easy to feel hopeless considering these challenges. We seek leaders who will promote harmony rather than division. We look to man-made systems for justice and equality. Scripture reminds us to wait for the Lord and to seek Him for our salvation. God gave us the priceless gift of hope when He sent His Son to live among us and to take away our sin through His death. There is no trial that we are facing that our Savior did not face and conquer with His resurrection.

Not only are we to trust in God, we are to be glad in Him. This includes being mindful of our blessings and thankful for them.

Even in the world of COVID-19, we continue to be blessed. Our family is healthy, our children began new jobs they are enjoying and we are looking forward to a wedding in 2021 (and a wonderful daughter-in-law to be). We also continue to work and are able to provide for ourselves and enjoy time together.

In this Advent season, let us all focus on the hope we have in the Lord and the bountiful gifts He has provided to us—most importantly His Son. Let us also look to Him for help and assurance and deliverance. At the same time, let us assist in ushering in His Kingdom by the lives we live.

Prayer: Father God, help us to find hope in Your faithful promises. May we always remember our many blessings and give thanks for Your continued goodness. Amen.

PERFECT Days

Focal Scripture: John 1:1–8 Being a native Georgian, I have seen my share of unique changes of the seasons. There is a streak of roughly a week of what I call “perfect days,” usually at the beginning of spring and fall—The temperatures are perfect. The sky is crystal blue. They are models of perfect weather. What usually precedes and follows these perfect days are gloomy weather days that swing in temperature and demeanor, typically accompanied by rain. But what makes these days any less perfect that the crystal blue sky days? They are both created by God and reflect His glory.

When I reflect on John 1:1-8 in which John describes the coming of Jesus, he seems to be describing “perfect days,” with the understanding that his own personal days are not perfect. God’s creation of Jesus was perfect but we as human beings are not. That in no way discounts our ability to still reflect the perfect glory of God in our everyday lives. My prayer for you today is that you embrace the beauty of the “imperfect days” of life and use every seemingly “imperfect” element to reflect the perfect glory of God in your life.

Prayer: God, thank You for embodying the imperfect flesh of this world in the most perfect way to be the ultimate personification of love for us. May we take every moment possible to reflect Your perfect glory to this dying world, so that they, too, can see You in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WAITING IN HOPE for a Child

Focal Scripture: Luke 1:26–56 As I reflect on this passage, I am nearing the end of my third trimester. However, after quietly experiencing the loss of an early pregnancy last year, I have been hopefully waiting for another child for longer than this gestation period.

How much longer did Elizabeth, who was barren and “far advanced in years,” wait in hope for a child? We were told Elizabeth remained in seclusion for five months after conception. In the midst of the present COVID-19 pandemic, I, too, have been removed from so-called “normal life” for the past several months. I imagine Elizabeth and myself have shared many of the same anxieties during our respective times of isolation waiting for the birth of a child, albeit thousands of years apart.

And Mary likely experienced an even greater myriad of emotions while waiting for the birth of the Christ Child, who she carried for nine months in a world with significantly less medical reassurances (and higher maternal mortality rates!) than the one in which you and I now live.

As we anticipate Christ’s coming during this season of Advent, together with all of earth which has been waiting for the Redeemer since the fall of man, may we reflect on and share in Elizabeth and Mary’s faith in God’s power, mercy and faithfulness which are so wonderfully evident in today’s reading.

Prayer: Dear God, we ask that You be mindful of our present state and sustain us during these uncertain times. Extend Your mercy to us this Advent season and grant us patience as we hope for great things to come. Amen.

FALLING Back on God

Focal Scripture: Luke 2:1–7 Back in the early days of spring, the fear of a deadly virus plaguing the world was in the minds of everyone. We accepted the two-week shutdown and prayed for our joyful reunion. Now here we are, seven months after our promised time of return, still waiting. Of course, this is discouraging for everyone, but many of us have turned to alternate sources of hope. These alternate sources of hope have become the new normal for us, and we continue to hopefully wait.

Many of us have experienced the sensation of waiting for a new show or waiting for a vacation or waiting for the newest music, but none of us have waited for something to this extent. Personally, I have waited every day to hang out with my friends safely and like everyone else, I long for the day where I do not have to worry anymore. This sense of worry has led many of us to fall back on God. Falling back on God is the only certain thing during times of confusion. No matter what changes, God will always stay the same. Now more than ever, it is important to strengthen the faith that we have dedicated our lives to. Just like how you practice a musical instrument or a sport, we need to continue to practice our faith.

Prayer: Dear God, please help us to continue to practice our faith in confusing times. Help us to fall back on You and continue to reassure our faith. Amen.

ALWAYS FOLLOW

the Voice of God

Focal Scripture: Luke 2:8–15 I know Luke 2:8–15 because I’ve heard Linus say this to Charlie Brown when he asks, “What’s Christmas all about?” I have good memories about Christmas. I remember the time I got my L.O.L. house and I remember the time that my cousin, Smith, and I got the tiny bicycles to learn to ride a big bike (his was orange and mine was pink.) I like that we always sit in the dining room and have breakfast on Christmas day with orange juice.

Every Christmas, I really hope I’m on the good list, but God doesn’t have a good or bad list. You just have to believe and apologize to Jesus. It’s not about presents, it’s about Jesus. Linus said too, “the best presents of all are peace, joy and goodwill to all people.”

My favorite Christmas song is Carol of the Bells. Mama says the words are fitting: Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say, throw cares away Christmas is here, bringing good cheer, to young and old, meek and the bold.

Oh, how they pound, raising the sound, O’er hill and dale, telling their tale.

Gaily they ring, while people sing, Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here.

Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas, Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas.

I’m not happy about 2020, but I will enjoy the end celebrating Christmas with my family.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for helping us and for keeping us safe. Please be with us through this difficult time. Thank You, Lord, for everything You do. Amen.

TURN AROUND & Give it Away

Focal Scripture: Luke 2:16–20 One of the things our family has missed most during this time of “virtual church” is the Wednesday night activities. Our girls, especially, miss gathering on Wednesday evenings with their friends and teachers for Kid’s Club. In attempting to fill the gap, the girls tune in to Rev. Heather Webb’s weekly materials—many of which include the praise songs they were learning on Wednesday evenings.

At one point deep into “social-distancing”—feeling stressed, lonely and generally frazzled by virtual work with two small children at home—we gathered the girls around the computer for virtual Bible study. In order to emphasize the point she was making, Ms. Heather had added a praise song to her lesson. The moment it appeared on the screen, Clara was up on her feet dancing and singing as loud as she could: “Your love is spinning me around and around, turning me upside down. I can’t believe you love me more than I can contain. I’m going to turn around and give it away.”* In that moment, we got a glimpse of the abandon with which the shepherds in the Christmas story were celebrating and sharing the Good News of Jesus’s birth. And—just as all who heard the shepherds were amazed—we were amazed by the joy God provides in the midst of uncertainty and despair … and now we feel led to “turn around and give it away” and share the Good News of the love of Christ!

Prayer: God, thank You for sending Your Son to a hurting world. We are grateful for the joy You have given us, even in the midst of uncertainty and despair. Help us to share this joy with the same abandon with which the shepherds shared the news of Jesus’s birth. WHEN Words Fail

Focal Scripture: Isaiah 9:2–7 In his beautiful book on writing, My Reading Life, southern author Pat Conroy talks about the many literary influences who inspired his career. When he gets to the works of Thomas Wolfe he gushes, and his praise starts to sound like hero worship.

He said that critics of Wolfe prefer more precise writing and cleaner prose. But Wolfe goes off into fits and bursts of ecstatic language that reach for something unreachable. Conroy says that people who do not get Wolfe do not recognize that he is not writing prose so much as he is praying.

I gush at the writing of the prophet Isaiah who seems to be stretching also. He uses excessive images and bold proclamations, trying to reach and rise to give language to the unspeakable: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace …

My friend Paul Duke once said, “All descriptions of God are just toy arrows flung at the moon.”

This Christmas, we give thanks for the gift that is beyond any attempts of language. Isaiah tries to describe the people’s joy: “they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest …” His soaring language takes us as high as he can reach, trying to get us caught up in the size of this unspeakable gift.

Maybe this is why we sing so much at Christmastime; prose won’t reach high enough for what our heart feels over the gift that the manger holds.

Prayer: Dear God, our language fails us when we try to give thanks for the gifts of Christmas that are not under the tree. We praise You for peace and hope and love—and all the gifts of our salvation. Our hearts sing out to You in gratitude for the Christ Child, in whose name we pray, Amen.
