ADVENT DEVOTIONAL Advent is upon us and we’re glad you’ve decided to spend these days using this devotional to prepare your heart for the birth of Jesus. This book, spanning from December 1 (the first Sunday of Advent) through December 25, is themed around the carols of Advent and Christmas. It is our hope that this collection will spur your heart to search for both the miraculous babe in the manger and the savior risen from the grave—our Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Each devotional thought and accompanying prayer was contributed by a church or staff member at Second-Ponce. We hear Christmas memories and stories from our Sunday School teachers, Deacons, young adults, children, seniors, musicians and choir members and families. As you stop each day to read, reflect and pray, take time to breathe deeply and settle your mind.

Reflect and listen to God’s voice. Ask God to speak to you this Advent season as you expectantly wait for the Christ child. Allow the hymns and songs of the season “to find their way into our lives and form us more closely into your likeness.”

There are many ways to use this book (also offered in its entirety online at spdl.org/advent and daily doses via email). You may prefer to read and reflect in solitude as an individual. You might want to share the readings with your spouse or family before a meal or as a closing to the day. You could pair your readings with the tradition of lighting candles on a personal or family Advent wreath. Or, you may want to leave this book on your desk to intentionally take a break during the work day ¹.

LET HEAVEN

AND NATURE SING

The four Sundays preceding Christmas Day are observed in the Christian tradition as Advent—a time used to prepare for the coming of the Christ child; an opportunity to intentionally and purposefully live in a discipline of hope. The celebration includes traditional themes of hope, peace, joy and love which we will experience in worship during the Sundays of Advent here at SecondPonce.

The word advent comes from the Latin adventus, which translates from the Greek parousia as “coming.” It is a time of renewal and preparing one’s heart for God’s incarnation. This year, we invite you to celebrate with “Joy to the World,” as the angels and shepherds did, by meditating on (and singing along with) the songs and carols of Advent and Christmas.

Sometimes, it’s easy to feel like our world is lacking in joy. Near daily reports of shootings and war create a culture of fear. We can feel helpless to address the growing needs of those in poverty. We find ourselves weeping for children who are bullied and feel unsafe in our schools. We worry about family and medical diagnoses. We argue over politics and even quarrel over the best way to solve all of these problems. And in the midst of these seemingly joyless times, our desperate search for happiness leaves us vulnerable to the world’s view of success and beauty instead of God’s.

Praise God! Jesus has come to redeem this world lacking in joy. He desires for each of us to experience the joy only he can bring: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11). As believers, we can sing and rejoice in the fact that Jesus has come as babe to our world and redeemed it and Jesus will come again.

So, this Advent, we invite you to join in the timeless chorus of hope:

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King!

Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

START TO WHISPER

Like the soil beneath the frost-line, hearts grow soft to welcome him.

When I was in second grade, my brother and I decided to get dad a sleeping bag for Christmas. I remember the shopping trip with mom well. She made us promise not to tell dad what we had selected for his present. My brother and I could not contain the secret. We began to whisper about the gift at the dinner table. Then, we started to drop not-so-subtle hints which dad pretended not to understand. Frustrated that he was not understanding, I finally leaned in and whispered, “We are not supposed to tell you that we got you a sleeping bag for Christmas!” He smiled and chuckled. We ended up giving him the sleeping bag that night as the secret had been revealed.

The Good News of the gift could not be contained any longer—it bubbled out with childlike joy.

One advent hymn paints a beautiful picture of the heavens starting to whisper the Good News of Christ when it could not be contained any longer. The hymn’s poetic words reminded me that people had been waiting and hoping for Jesus to come long before he arrived. Many hearts had likely grown weary from waiting. Perhaps, people even wondered if the Promised One would ever come. Yet, God in the fullness of time, put everything in motion for his son to come and redeem us all.

How are our hearts this Advent season? Are our hearts weary and worn? Or are our hearts listening to heaven as God gently whispers the Good News that Jesus is coming yet again?

Lord, may the Good News of Jesus bubble out of us with childlike joy this season, and always, as he is the gift that cannot be contained any longer! Amen.

The carols inspire a lasting incentive for our journey as we listen, hum along and relish the power of our faith. The uniqueness of Christmas jolts us into a realm that is both comforting and confusing. Accept the joy of Christ’s advent! This medieval song, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel offers both a backward look and forward hope.

Many decades ago, a young girl stood with the large congregation to sing the invitation hymn. The hymnal was quickly returned to the rack and the pull of Christ’s call was miraculous. My life was permanently pledged to Jesus Christ as my feet took me to the front of the church to be greeted by the pastor, my father. Ultimate joy was born.

Our own church began a recent worship service with the words of invocation, “Lord, we long to worship you.” This brought a lasting memory of joy and inclusion meeting my needs that day.

Carols of faith lead us into a unique time of worship. We rejoice, we offer glory to God, we sing with the angels and accept the redeeming power of the King of Kings. As we sing the entreats of “O Come, Emmanuel,” we gratefully answer with “Joy to the world, the Lord has come!”

Thank you, Lord, for your answer to the plea of this hymn. We rejoice that our God is in our presence, that you are with us and we are yours. Amen.

This beautiful Christmas carol takes me back to my childhood and my expectations of Christmas. I was born in a little town in West Virginia ... in a much simpler place… in a much simpler time. There was a department store in town that began on December 1 to place a countdown at the bottom of its advertisements—25 Days ‘til Christmas!—and my excitement grew daily. My task was to help decorate the tree by putting on those endless silvery icicles which my mother insisted I hang strand by strand! When Christmas morning finally came there would be a doll, a game, a 365 days/year story book and even “Day of the Week” undies (dare I say that?).

So, I grew up, had children of my own and grandchildren. Christmas became more expansive and more expensive!

Now, in my senior years, I find that Christmas has become what it should be. I love the joy that Christmas brings. I love the music and the calm and peace that celebrating the birth of Jesus brings. I love being with my family. I love coming to church and the fellowship here. I love celebrating the season of Advent.

So Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus has come full circle for me—from my childish anticipation of the coming of Santa Claus to the promise of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Father in heaven, as we hurry and scurry about during the coming weeks, our prayer is to take time to be still and feel your loving presence as we walk along with you in the path of peace. Amen.

I was not familiar with the Advent carol Comfort, Comfort Ye My People. Many Advents have come and gone in my life and I don’t think I have ever sung this song. The carol, found as number 89 in our Celebrating Grace hymnal, is not something new.

The words were written in 1671 and the tune goes back to 1551. Based on the words from Isaiah 40:1–5, the carol is a poetic rendering of this great passage in which God offers hope and peace to the Hebrews who are in exile in Babylon. Soon they will be returning home where they can know the “comfort” of God. In a great declaration of this hope, we sing, “Speak ye to Jerusalem of the peace that waits for them; tell her that her sins I cover, and her warfare now is over.”

I am guessing that this carol may be new to you as well. During the season of Advent and Christmas we love singing the old favorites. After all, December is the only time we sing these special songs that have such deep meaning for us. In the midst of singing these familiar hymns, will you take some time to listen and learn a new song?

Remember those words from Psalm 40:3, “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.” I pray that this “new song” from Isaiah 40 will bring comfort and peace to you this Advent season.

Gracious God, tune our ears and our hearts to hear a new song of your hope during this season of Advent. Comfort us in our exile moments with the Good News of the birth of Jesus. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

LO, HOW A ROSE

E’ER BLOOMING

The “rose” in the text of this 15th century hymn is a symbolic reference to Mary, the young virgin mother (“from tender stem hath sprung”). The hymn also refers to the Old Testament prophecies of Isaiah which foretell the incarnation of Christ, and to the Tree of Jesse, a traditional symbol of the lineage of Jesus. Due to its prophetic theme, the hymn is popular during the season of Advent.

For centuries, people of faith longed for God to honor His promise to send Messiah, the Savior of the world. During those long years of waiting, times were difficult, and I am sure many felt that God may have abandoned them; however, God kept His promise and sent Jesus to be the Savior of the world.

A missionary friend who served in Zimbabwe, Africa, for many years once told me of how she had begun to feel isolated and abandoned by God. She prayed for weeks that God would help her overcome these feelings. One morning, she looked out her kitchen window and saw a tiny bloom that had appeared on a rose bush. Immediately, she felt that God was affirming her service in that country so far from home and she received a new sense of hope.

When we light the Candle of Hope—the Prophecy Candle—in the Advent wreath, we remember the long years of waiting during which the prophets, inspired by God, kept alive the hope that the Messiah was coming to redeem the people from their sin and give a new quality of life now and for eternity.

Dear God, help us to see in the little things around us the affirmation of your presence and your gift of hope. Amen.

Carol and Winford Hendrix have been attending Second-Ponce for almost two years having become church members in July 2018. Carol loves singing in the choir and they both enjoy Wednesday night dinners and Bible study.

DIVINE MESSIAH

It seems the older I get, the more I realize that life on this earth can have just as many lows as highs sometimes. I’m thankful for all the joyous moments and many blessings that God has provided me, but often it’s hard to let go of the negative moments in life. I find peace in the realization that life on this earth is only temporary. Things in my life may not go exactly how I originally envisioned, but I serve a risen Savior who has a plan for me. Life may be a struggle at times here on earth but one day, after my work is done, God will call me to my eternal home where pain and hardship will be no more.

This is all accomplished through the power of Jesus Christ. This carol celebrates the birth of Jesus and his return to one day take all Christians home. The birth of Jesus is so sweet. It is the best gift anyone will ever give us. If you truly believe and have faith in him, those low moments in life won’t keep you down.

Dear God, I thank you for your son, Jesus. Give me the strength and discipline to live the life that you want me to lead and stay focused on you. Amen.

I always marvel at the night sky when I take the time to travel away from the city lights. I often forget how immense, beautiful and intricate our universe is. When away from the artificial and ambient light in our urban areas, we see more than just a few of the “popular” stars like the Little Dipper and the North Star. We see millions of stars and their arrangements into constellations. We see the beauty of the nebula, meteors and possibly large comets and even the reflections from some planets. That view places a perspective on the universe of which we can easily lose sight. Viewing it gives us the opportunity to “reset.”

I recently saw a blanket with a quote, “How cool is it that the same God that created oceans and mountains and galaxies looked at you and thought the world needed one of you, too.” While this quote is a bit self-centric, it reminded me that I am a beloved creation of God. It reminds me that God cares enough for me (and you) to send his son to our world.

During this Advent season, take a short road trip to view the night sky. Stop and marvel that the God who created the universe cared enough to come to our world as a helpless baby. Then, cared enough to die on a cross for our sins. That same God desires to be with us and know us.

Creator God, thank you for sending your son and co-creator of the universe to Earth. Thank you for his love and sacrifice for us.

May we often whisper, “Come to Us!” Amen.

I spent a lot of time with my cousins in Cedartown, Georgia, growing up. It was so different from my Atlanta home; so, Mayberry, really. The pace was a bit slower; everyone knew everyone else and traffic jams were only a rumor. Nothing big happens there.

Until it does.

Sometimes a great football player comes from such a place. Or a movie star. Nick Chubb, the NFL star grew up there and so did one of Disney’s greatest voice actors, Sterling Holloway (the voice of Winnie the Pooh).

But what if the greatest one of all came from your little town? What if Micah 5:2 came true, “But you, Bethlehem… though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” The prophet is saying, “This little place gave us a king once, but someday a King. The ultimate King.”

Why Bethlehem? Maybe God was sending a message. Good things come in small packages. And if the most mundane corners of the world could produce something so wonderful, maybe there is no mundane corner of the world. Maybe there are no “little people.” Maybe God will do something spectacular in your life or mine—just as he did in the little town of Bethlehem.

Father, help me to remember that you do great and marvelous things with “the least of these.” Show me how you can work through me this Advent season. Amen.

On the second Sunday in Advent in 2002, I received word that my mother had unexpectedly died. She lived in American Samoa, 2,300 miles south of Hawaii, where she had been born and raised and where we had returned to live after my dad retired from the military. Other than a few visits, and attending my dad’s funeral in 1986, I had not been back to the islands.

Through a series of amazing providential circumstances, I found myself in Samoa three days later (not an easy feat considering I lived on the East Coast!), in time to attend mom’s funeral.

The night before her memorial service, we were sitting in the house where I grew up, sharing family stories. Down the hill from our house was a small village church. On Wednesday nights they would have choir practice. That evening, while we remembered our beloved mother, I could hear in the distance, sung in the Samoan language, Once in Royal David’s City. I was so profoundly moved by this, and so comforted! I will always remember how this carol touched my heart and continues to every Christmas season.

My late parents knew Jesus. Many of your departed loved ones did, too. They are, in God’s gracious providence, a part of “that multitude which no man can number.” Every Lord’s Day, in worship, we are mystically united with them as we worship our Lord and Savior. In worship, we get a tiny glimpse of the glory they experience!

God, remind me of the blessing of your glorious story of redemption, which all began in “a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby, in a manger for his bed.” Alleluia! Amen!

THE

FIRST NOEL

The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

The First Noel is a song that has multiple hidden meanings. We meet the angels first. The angels sing praises of joy for the birth of Jesus. This should remind us to be joyful at Christmas. It also paints a picture of shepherds “on a cold, winter’s night that was so deep.” I think the reason that the Lord chose the shepherds is because Jesus is the Lamb of God. Even in the cold, dark field, the star shining in the East was so bright. Jesus is like that. In the darkest parts of our lives, Jesus is the light.

Then we meet the wise men who come with gifts for baby Jesus. In honor of that, we give each other gifts at Christmas. God gave us His love so that we could give it to others; the best thing we could give someone at Christmas is love. As the song ends, we are reminded that God’s love is not just with us at Christmas time, but all the time. “Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our Heavenly Lord.”

Dear Jesus, help us to be light in dark places. May we be filled with your joy this year. Amen.

WHILE SHEPHERDS WATCHED

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks may not be as familiar a Christmas carol, but its verses tell an amazing story. Have you ever experienced nature’s majestic beauty? Maybe it was an unexpected rainbow after a storm, a beach sunrise, a full moon rising in the mountains or flashes of the Aurora Borealis. All you can do is stop, watch and quietly take it in. In that moment “heaven and nature sing.”

It had to be like that for the shepherds. In the middle of a quiet night in the fields, something caught their attention. It was a much more moving experience than anything we’ve ever seen. Suddenly, they were surprised, shocked and even afraid. But somehow the sight was strangely calming as they heard the voice tell them to “fear not.” The shepherds heard “heaven and nature sing.” It was real and tangible and unforgettable.

The angel’s message was amazing! A Savior had been born and he came to bring peace to all men. The shepherds were included; they were a part of the news. They weren’t rich or powerful. They weren’t society’s elite. They were ordinary everyday people, yet they were the first to be told of the birth of the Christ child. Those ordinary people were the first to travel to see Jesus. They were the first to excitedly share the Good News they had heard and seen. Jesus had been born to bring peace and salvation to all people, even the shepherds.

In the Charlie Brown Children’s Christmas Special, Linus recites Luke 2:8–14 and says, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.” Linus got it right.

Thank you, Father, for the beauty and peace that comes with knowing you care so much for us. Help us to be like the shepherds and share the story of the Good News of Jesus with others. Amen.

Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is not a song frequently included in Christmas collections. In fact, it was not even written for Christmas, but rather as a dance tune for French nobles. Somewhere in the 1700’s it became associated with Christmas. It is most often heard as an instrumental. It’s a lilting melody and, when sung, beautiful harmonies bring joy to my heart. (And, yes, I do feel like dancing when I hear it.)

Traditionally “Jeanette, Isabella” is thought to be Jeanette AND Isabella—two young milk maids featured in a nativity painting

by Georges de La Tour. The song has them lighting torches and running back to their village to tell about the Christ child.

Maybe the girls had come to the stable to do their milking. Maybe the girls heard all the commotion the shepherds made as they ran from the stable to the village. Either way they came. Why wouldn’t two young girls be filled with joy at seeing our Lord in His mother’s arms? Why wouldn’t they be so excited they had to run get their friends and families as the shepherds did?

Why aren’t we running to our neighbors and family to tell them the great news that Jesus Christ is, indeed, born? And died.

And was raised from the dead to atone for our sins.

Light your torch. Share your joy.

Lord, thank you for the joy of Christmas. Help us to share that joy as we go. Amen.

Have you ever been so full of the joy of the Lord that you burst into glorious song? You simply could not help yourself! Your entire being was so filled with amazing gratitude that the joy just bubbled out. I have been there! When each of my grandchildren was born, I was so overcome with the awesome joy of the Lord that I went outside on my back deck and sang praises to God at the top of my voice.

Perhaps that is how the angels felt when Jesus was born. They could not help themselves—their joy knew no bounds and they expressed that joy in heavenly song. As the angel sang, a multitude of the heavenly host joined in praising God and saying, “Gloria in excelsis Deo (Glory to God in the highest).”

The year is ending. As Christians, we come to the manger. Quietly we come and then it happens...the joy of the Lord fills our being and we sing... first one little voice, then another and another! We form a choir united in praise, adoration, hope and joy.

This holy season I invite you to open your Bible and come—come to the manger and sing your heart out! Glory to God in the highest! Gloria in excelsis Deo! Lord Jesus, into my heart, into my heart, come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Come in today, come in to stay. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Have you heard people talking about buying an “experience” instead of a traditional gift for the holidays? We are so blessed (spoiled) with material things such as watches, smartphones and clothes that many of us may not really appreciate traditional gifts like we once did. Today, people are trying to capture memories through interactive experiences like hot air balloon rides, chef-led cooking classes, family sporting events and sky diving. We are longing for gifts that engage all our senses and create lasting memories.

This fall, our family experienced an extra special Sunday. Our boys, Carson and Casey, were baptized at church before friends and family. It was truly an amazing day! I can’t explain the joy and pride that we experienced knowing that our children have made the most important decision of their lives.

I can’t think of a greater gift or experience for our family. This great day was filled with celebration and praise. Not only did our family celebrate but our entire church family celebrated, as well. Our boys were acknowledged with hugs and pats on the backs as well as hand-written notes from our church family. This was an experience that we will cherish forever!

Let us sing, “Glory to God in the highest heaven!” Let us praise your holy name.

Dear Lord, we thank you for the joy that you bring us every day and for the wonderful experiences that you give us to enjoy. Thank you for the memories, sounds, smells and feelings of each of these events. Help us, dear Lord, to cherish these times and to sing your praises as the angels do in heaven. We ask that you continue to bless us with your favor. Amen.

When I hear the hymn Angels from the Realms of Glory I immediately think of our church choir and the many times we sang this song in the Christmas pageant years ago. There were many years where several of us made up the heavenly host dressed as angels. We did not wear halos, but we did have some very bright white robes. What a joy it was to raise our voices and praise God together.

As Christians we don’t need a special pageant or even to be part of a choir to sing with joy to the Lord. Christmas hymns are joyful songs of anticipation and a welcome for and to our newborn King. When you sing the Advent and Christmas hymns this year try to imagine what it must have been like for the shepherds to be visited by not just one angel but a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and bidding them to come and worship. Imagine how life-changing that one moment was in their lives.

Our Savior was born for all people. How could the heavens not burst forth in song to announce such great news? Heed the call to come and worship—worship Christ our newborn King.

Dear Lord as we go through this Christmas season please help us always keep our focus on you. May we tell others about your love for us through the birth of your son Christ, our Lord, so that all will want to come and worship Him, too. Amen.

“When they saw the light in the darkness, they were afraid. I would be, too. Then they heard singing. That scared them, too, until they heard the words. The angels sang that they came to bring peace on earth and good will to all people. ‘Run. Hurry.

Go to Bethlehem. Something has happened there that changes everything!’” (Godly Play, Volume 2) A few years ago, a three-year-old looked at me very seriously and said with disgust, “Did you know some people think Jesus is God? God can’t be a BABY!” These kinds of proclamations are why I love working with children.

If you’ve ever spent time with young children, you probably know that the worst thing someone can do to a three-year-old child is call them a baby. Babies are helpless. They cry all the time. Their need to nurse or nap gets in the way of the important things that three-year-old children want to do. You may have also observed on occasion a young child—given the time and means to express themselves—communicating a deep experience of God that inspires in them awe and wonder beyond the words they have to describe it. Given his experiences, my three-year-old friend’s confusion when trying to reconcile the idea of God (too big for words) and baby (tiny and mostly terrible) makes perfect sense.

And isn’t that what makes the Incarnation so profound? Our “too big for words” God became a wordless child and that changes everything.

Gracious God give us the patience to listen for the deep wisdom of the children in our lives, the courage to see more of God revealed in them and the openness to wonder with them at the magnitude of God’s love for us. Amen.

“Emmanuel, his name is called Emmanuel” The lyrics of this hymn are so simple, yet so impactful. The word Emmanuel—God with us—a daily reminder of the presence of a loving, forgiving and graceful father.

One doesn’t have to look far in scripture to find a reminder that God is always with us, he never leaves us or forsakes us.

During this season of hope and peace, we too often get caught up in the hustle and bustle to stop and reflect on the precious gift of true HOPE and PEACE—a son, Emmanuel—that would pay the ultimate price for all of our sins. God with us has never seemed more appropriate than in that moment.

There are so many versions of songs with Emmanuel in the title or lyrics. None ring truer to me than the fond memories of dancing around my childhood home with the Amy Grant 1990’s version of Emmanuel playing, on a cassette no less. You know the one I’m referencing with the amazing harpsichord/pop beat in the background. It was a household staple and one of the first records my family gifted to me when I moved into my first home. The joy that song and the blissful memories it brings are reminiscent of the Advent season. It is the nice bow, fit just so, tying together not only the ending of calendar year, but the hopeful reflection and anticipation of what is to come.

God, words would never be enough to thank you for the sacrifice you made for us in sending us the most wonderful gift, your son, Emmanuel. May we be a shining light for you in this special season and may our words and actions reflect those you unveiled that night in Bethlehem. Amen.

The two Christmas carols I remember hearing every Christmas were Away in a Manager and Silent Night. I am sure there are more, but these two have remained with me. When I hear Silent Night, I slow down. The carol brings back lots of memories of hearing the Christmas story, late night Christmas Eve services with candles, caroling in neighborhoods and a turntable with Time Life records spinning.

Just think, a song written in the 1800’s is still sung by so many people today. What a story! It has been sung by troops serving in wars to quiet the fighting on Christmas Eve and other times to send everyone home from Christmas Eve services worldwide. Different circumstances, but with the same result—a quiet peaceful moment in time.

When I hear the words to Silent Night, I see candles and feel the love of the family and friends that have surrounded me during my life. It brings such a calm and peaceful feeling to me to know that I have been blessed with love from family and friends for many years.

God blessed us with his son, Jesus, and as we hear and sing Silent Night, we should strive to be silent and become a light that shines in the darkness just like the candles that light up on Christmas Eve. We need to be the shepherds that wake up and share the news the Messiah is born and let him be our light that shines in the darkness.

Father, I pray today that as I hear the music of Christmas, I will take time to be silent. Thank you, God, for sending your son to be the light in my darkness. Help me to continue to live life big because you have blessed me abundantly. Amen.

My first-time celebrating Christmas was in the first grade. It was my first year home with my mom and dad. We lived in Mussoorie, India, a town at the top of a mountain. Each morning in December, we went outside to watch Christmas plays and sing Christmas songs at my school. I learned to sing the song The Little Drummer Boy that year and I really loved it.

My music teacher (my mom) always had the children play the drums on The Little Drummer Boy. The kids really loved playing the drums and they always begged to play the drum part. They loved the way the noise of the drums echoed. It was a big celebration to sing The Little Drummer Boy at my school.

I love the words of The Little Drummer Boy because it talks about how a poor boy gave Jesus a gift. The boy played on his drum when he didn’t have anything else to give Jesus. The boy worshiped Jesus with his heart because he loved Him. We are like this little boy because we love the Lord and want to bring Him a gift, too!

Let’s bring our best gifts to worship Jesus this year! We can love others. We can help others. We can pray for others. We can give offerings. We can sing, dance and play instruments. We can even have a party as our gift to Jesus!

All these gifts are wonderful but the very best gift you can give to Jesus this year is your heart!

Lord Jesus, may we bring our best gifts to you each day! Amen.

We are such planners. Before Alaina was born, we spent countless hours picking out paint colors for the nursery and the perfect linens for the baby crib. It was such a big deal that everything was perfect and planned out for the arrival of our new baby. But things never go as planned. In the end, the important part was our beautiful daughter lying in our arms, not the paint color on the walls or the linens in the crib.

At Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph’s plans seems to go haywire. There was “no room for them in the inn” and “no crib for a bed.”

Imagine the chaos and rush of trying to improvise last-minute for the arrival of a new baby. Yet despite the chaos of the circumstance, there is peace in the simplicity of a baby sleeping in a simple manger.

The holiday season seems to get busier and more chaotic every year. The decorations, gifts, parties and meals must be planned and perfectly executed. Should we stop to think in the middle of all the planning and chaos? Do the extensive plans and celebrations bring us closer to family?

Jesus was humbly and simply born in a stable surrounded by family and love. Can we this Christmas remember the gift of Jesus and his simple birth and make Christmas a time of being surrounded by family and love?

Dear Lord, help us to see through the clutter and chaos of the holiday season that your birth is a reminder that things don’t have to go as perfectly as we planned in order to fit into your perfect plan. Amen.

The Hubble family lives on the west side of Atlanta. Robert and Heather have been members of Second-Ponce since 2010.

Alaina joined the church this summer through her profession of faith and baptism. The Hubbles love traveling, camping, hiking and rock climbing. Their home would not be complete without their dog, Ivory and cat, Strawberry Cupcake.

When my daughter was three months old, she played the role of baby Jesus in the Christmas program at my childhood church. It is the scene from Isaiah 9:6 when, “a child is given.” The birth of Jesus—a long awaited promise realized—was foretold by prophets. Mary must have been speechless when she held the baby in her arms.

While biblical culture was very different, I have also seen God’s promise at other births. During my time working at a residential home for pregnant teens, precious babies were born to more than a dozen young mothers. Even in challenging circumstances, birth evokes the sacred promised of hope. Jesus’ birth changed everything the world knew to be true. It all began in a humble manger with a young mom.

The birth of the divine child calls us back again to remember the moment when God heard the prayers of his people and came to bring redemption. The light shining at his birth still comes to us whenever we turn toward the Lord. We are both comforted and joyful at the prophetic and parabolic act of a baby born to redeem us.

Jesus is the Kingdom of God realized. The Holy Spirit joined us to God through the child. Is something born in us when we enter in this glorious story? Let us keep watch during Advent, preparing our hearts to celebrate the kingdom already realized and the one yet to come.

Come to us, divine child. May we find in you the call to be peacekeepers. Fill our hearts with your dreams and guide us to welcome our neighbors to your table. Amen.

How does someone become dependent on God? Probably there are many ways.

For many men it is childbirth. Phil was uninterested in God or spiritual things until he saw his first child—a daughter—born.

Within days, he sought out Christian friends, joined a Bible study, started attending church and ultimately gave his life to Christ. All because he saw a living, breathing life delivered into his hands for years to come. As he became aware of the child’s vulnerability, and his own, he knew he needed divine help.

Joseph had a difficult life assignment—marry your bride, pregnant by the Holy Spirit, and she will bear the Savior of your people. Then raise him to become a man of “wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). By the time the couple arrived in Bethlehem, Joseph had seen enough supernatural visions to last a lifetime. Perhaps what changed his life forever though was this natural event: the birth of his child. As he became the first human ever to touch and cradle Jesus, did his hands sense the shared parent/child vulnerability? Did he give himself afresh to God for strength and aid for all that lay ahead? I believe so.

As we experience our vulnerabilities today, will we give ourselves afresh to God for aid and strength for all that lies ahead? I hope so.

Dear Lord, as Joseph sensed his need for your strength and aid in new and deeper ways upon touching the vulnerable newborn baby Jesus, may we today be conscious of our vulnerabilities. We give ourselves to you afresh and ask for strength and aid for all that lies ahead of us. Amen.

I grew up loving to sing. My dad played violin and piano, sang and was the volunteer Choir Director at our church. We sang and listened to music all the time.

However, this song is not one I remember from childhood. It is an English carol from the 1600’s, but it was not in any of the old Baptist Hymnals I have—not even a hymnal from 1939. I sang and learned to love this carol when I was in college. Each Christmas, the Furman Singers went caroling and On Christmas Night All Christians Sing was one carol that we sang.

The music is joyful, as are the words. It speaks of Christians and angels singing and rejoicing at the birth of our Savior. The light of our Savior has brought us out of darkness, encouraging us to “Make a joyful noise to the Lord. Come into His presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:1–2) This Christmas, and always, we need to remember the joy of Jesus’ birth and the joy we feel knowing we have a Savior who loved us enough to die for us.

Lord, help me be filled with the joy of our Savior’s birth, not only at Christmas, but each day of the year. Help me to share that joy and love with all I meet. “Glory to God in highest heaven, now and forever more.” Amen.

To me, O Holy Night is the perfect Christmas carol. The music is glorious and the words are comprehensive of Jesus’ life on earth and his promise of eternal life. This one song tells the complete story of Christ—from his birth in a lowly stable, to shepherds and wise men coming to see and worship Him, to His triumphant return when “chains shall He break…and in His Name all oppression shall cease.”

The second verse, which is not usually sung (Guilty! I rarely sing this verse during a solo), also reinforces that Jesus really understands us and loves us, no matter what: Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand…

In all our trials, born to be our friend. He knows our need; to our weakness, no stranger.

Behold your King!...

In recent years, most recordings of this carol change the last part of the final verse to take Jesus out of it. Instead of singing “His power and glory evermore proclaim,” they sing “Noel, noel, noel, o night divine” or “Noel, noel, noel, o holy night.” I often wonder why anyone would bother singing about Jesus’ birth and life if they won’t sing about proclaiming his power and glory forever. Without Jesus being Lord, you don’t have a “holy” night to sing about.

Gracious Lord, help us to never forget that you really do understand what we go through, because you’ve “been there, done that.”

Remind us to always trust in you, and “(your) power and glory evermore proclaim!” Amen.

First Baptist Church, Doraville, Georgia, had a small youth group when I was a teen, but we were tightly committed to one another. We had lots of fun and only a few traditions, one was Christmas caroling together. We would meet up at someone’s home, lay out the order of our carols, then bundle up and walk house to house in the host family’s neighborhood. After we got too cold to continue, we would go back to the host home for hot chocolate and retelling the stories.

At the time, I thought that this was mostly about hanging out with my buddies. I had no idea that the words to these hymns were getting into my pores, shaping my theology and deepening my faith. We stood in cold doorways and sang O Come, All Ye Faithful. We sang, “True God of True God, Light from Light Eternal” (verse 2) and I was memorizing without knowing. “Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing” (verse 4). I did not know what the incarnation was, but I was singing the truths of our faith without a hymnal nearby.

I give thanks that almost all of that small band of pimply and insecure teenagers is still active in church. Jesus hymns located truth into our lives. Most of my buddies still stand and sing at Christmas— “O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!”

Dear God, renew us again with your truth and your spirit. May the hymns of this season find their way into our lives and form us more closely into your likeness. Amen.
