A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TIM CLEARY

As we reflect on the year that was, 2025 stands as a defining chapter in the life of St Edmund’s College, a year marked by gratitude, growth, renewal and a deepening sense of purpose.

Guided by our Edmund Rice Touchstones and grounded in our Catholic identity, our community has continued to walk together with faith, courage and hope, strengthening the foundations upon which our future will be built.

It has been my privilege to serve the College this year and to witness firsthand the strength of our community. From classrooms to playing fields, liturgies to leadership forums, and moments of quiet care to celebrations of great joy, St Edmund’s has lived its mission in ways that are both visible and meaningful.

Faith has remained at the heart of College life throughout 2025.

Our Opening Mass, celebrated with His Grace Archbishop Christopher Prowse, set the tone for the year as we gathered as one community

in prayer and commissioning. Significant liturgical moments — Ash Wednesday, Easter, Marian feasts, Reconciliation Week, sacramental celebrations and Graduation Mass — provided opportunities for reflection, renewal and shared worship.

These moments remind us that Catholic education is not simply about knowledge, but about formation: shaping young men who are reflective, compassionate and committed to the common good. Our focus on the EREA Touchstone of Liberating Education invited students and staff alike to open hearts and minds, becoming hope-filled and free to build a better world for all.

We were also deeply conscious this year of standing in solidarity with those who grieve.

The passing of Bishop Pat Power and Brother Bob Wallace was felt profoundly across our community. Both men shaped generations of Edmund Rice education and left an enduring legacy of faith, service and leadership. We honour their lives with gratitude and prayer.

At St Edmund’s, learning remains central to all that we do. In 2025, we continued to strengthen academic pathways while ensuring every student is known, supported and challenged.

Our senior cohort has grown significantly, allowing for greater breadth and depth in subject offerings across Years 11 and 12. This expansion reflects both the confidence families place in the College and our commitment to providing diverse pathways — whether towards university, vocational training, apprenticeships or employment.

We proudly celebrated the achievements of our students, including strong ATAR outcomes and the recognition of individual excellence.

Congratulations to Evan Richards, who was awarded College DUX with an outstanding ATAR of 96.8 — a remarkable achievement and a reflection of dedication, perseverance and support.

Equally important has been our work in reviewing and planning for the future. In preparation for our Strategic Plan 2026–2030, consultation across staff, students, parents and governance groups highlighted two clear priorities: Teaching & Learning and Student Wellbeing. These will shape our strategic direction as we continue to refine how boys learn best and how we support them to thrive.

Leadership has flourished across the College this year. Our student leaders have modelled integrity, humility and service, contributing positively to College culture. From House leadership and social justice initiatives to peer mentoring and public speaking, students have embraced opportunities to lead with purpose.

We congratulated our newly elected 2026 College Captains and Vice-Captains and look forward to the energy and vision they will bring. We also celebrated the achievements of Old Boys who continue to live the Edmund Rice spirit beyond the College, including Thomas Emerson and Leon Rebello for their contributions to public life, and Jed Stuart for reaching the elite level of professional sport.

Service remains a defining feature of an Edmund Rice education. Fundraising initiatives such as the Junior School Colour Run demonstrated generosity in action, raising significant funds for community spaces and student support. These experiences teach our young men that leadership is not about status, but about responsibility to others.

The life of the College extends well beyond the classroom. In 2025, our students continued to excel across sport, the arts and cultural pursuits.

Heritage Round was a standout celebration — a powerful expression of tradition, community pride and connection between past and present. Our sporting programs once again demonstrated teamwork, discipline and resilience, with many teams achieving premiership success and representing the College with distinction.

Our Creative and Performing Arts students shone through exhibitions, performances and musical events, including opportunities to perform alongside professional ensembles. The Visual Arts Exhibition and Gospel Choir performances highlighted not only technical skill but creativity, confidence and collaboration.

2026 will be a year of Encounter — deepening relationships and connection; a year of Truth — reflecting honestly on who we are and who we are called to be; and a year of Hope — confident in the future we are building together.

May we continue to walk forward as a faith-filled community, strengthened by our heritage and energised by the possibilities ahead.

Brother Bob Wallace 1937 - 2025

Br Bob Wallace, cfc, AM, passed away peacefully on Monday, 22nd September, at the age of 87. A dedicated Christian Brother, educator, coach, and leader, Bob’s life was one of deep service, humility, and vision. His death, following illness, is profoundly felt across the St Edmund’s College community and far beyond.

Bob spent over four decades in Catholic education, most notably here at St Edmund’s College, Canberra, where he served as Headmaster for 18 years. Arriving in 1971, he found a young school still defining itself.

Through his leadership, the College grew in strength, spirit, and identity. He was more than an administrator, he was a builder of culture, character, and community.

His belief in the power of sport to uplift a school led to a golden era in rugby, with 10 local premierships and four consecutive Waratah Shields under his coaching. Yet Bob’s influence reached far beyond the field. He introduced the College Orchestra, championed the arts, helped construct both the College gymnasium and chapel, and inspired generations of students to strive for excellence in all areas of life.

A founding figure in ACT Schools Rugby Union and a respected referee, Bob was tireless in his efforts to grow the game he loved.

He brought the same passion to every role he undertook, always guided by faith and a belief in young people. His contributions weren’t limited to the field. Bob was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 1987 for his dedication, particularly through his extensive career in Christian Brothers schools and his leadership within the Australian Schools Rugby Union (ASRU).

Bob Wallace was a man of immense integrity, faith, and compassion. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the traditions he began, and the spirit he nurtured at Eddie’s. He taught more than rugby, he taught belief, belonging, and brotherhood. His memory will forever be part of the heart of St Edmund’s College.

Bishop Pat Power 1942 - 2025

Bishop Pat Power, a beloved Old Boy of St Edmund’s College, passed away on Monday, 15th September, at the age of 83. Bishop Pat was a frequent and welcome presence at the College, regularly celebrating Mass and joining the community for significant events.

He officiated the weddings of many Old Boys and leaves behind a deep and lasting legacy, not only within the St Edmund’s family but across the entire Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. His warmth, humility, and unwavering faith left a profound impact on all who knew him.

Pat was a Foundation student at St Edmund’s in 1954 and later served as College Chaplain. His connection to the College remained strong throughout his life, and he was always proud to be an ‘Eddies Old Boy’, he also studied at Chevalier College in Bowral.

Fr. Pat often spoke of the challenges of his early years in Queanbeyan, which helped shape his deep empathy for others and his enduring commitment to social justice. Pat believed in the dignity of every person and consistently stood up for those who were overlooked.

His life was characterised by an extraordinary capacity for love, service, and compassion. He offered others not just his time, but his full attention and unwavering respect, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Bishop Pat Power was a faithful servant, a loving family man, and a true friend to all.

He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness and courage will continue to inspire generations to come.

The Foundation’s aim Inspired by the charism of Edmund Rice, the St Edmund’s College Foundation (The Foundation) was established to give financial assistance to marginalised or disadvantaged families so that the cost of educating their sons would be alleviated.

Since its inception in 1988, the Foundation has proudly supported the education and development of more than 100 young men at St Edmund’s College in Canberra, empowering them to reach their full potential both academically and personally.

M AT T D E J O N G H PRESIDENT As President of the Old Boys & Friends, I reflect on 2025 as a year marked by both unity and deep emotion. It has been a successful year in which our community has come together with great spirit at a range of events, strengthening the bonds that make our College community so special.

It has also been a time of sorrow, as we mourn the passing of two beloved College icons, Bishop Pat Power and Br Bob Wallace, whose legacies will long endure.

We also acknowledge the retirement of Old Boy and long-time teacher Carlo Sorrentino, who has concluded an extraordinary 43 years of dedicated service to the College. At the same time, we warmly welcome our new Principal, Mr Tim Cleary, whose genuine support for the Old Boys & Friends has already been strongly felt and greatly appreciated.

The dedication of our Old Boys & Friends continues to shine brightly, demonstrated so clearly this year by the tireless efforts of DJ Homes in upgrading the facilities at The Pines in Tuross.

Their willingness to give their time, skills and energy for the benefit of the College is a powerful example of what it means to be an Eddies Old Boy. By leading from the front, they have shown just how deeply they care for the College and its future, and we are truly grateful for their generosity and commitment.

In August we hosted the Blue & White Ball, which welcomed around 250 attendees and supported the Win the Day charity, an organisation dedicated to helping families facing the challenges of childhood cancer.

We were also thrilled by the success of this year’s Heritage Round, held annually on the day after the Blue & White Ball. This year saw arguably the largest turnout of Old Boys to date, creating an atmosphere of pride, connection and tradition that truly showcased the strength of our Eddies community.

The Old Boys & Friends are also proud this year to have donated funds raised to support those in need within the Eddies community, as well as to contribute to important facility upgrades, including improvements to the BBQ area and other College amenities.

Our Old Boys & Friends supporter merchandise has also continued to grow in popularity, with the hoodie, cap and beanie remaining favourites among the community. This year we were pleased to add an Eddies scarf to the range, and all items are now conveniently available for purchase through the College reception.

This year we proudly presented the Old Boys & Friends membership caps to the graduating Class of 2025 and, as is tradition, formally welcomed them into our community as the newest generation of Eddies Old Boys.

The Old Boys & Friends Golf Day at Fairbairn, held in December was a fantastic event, bringing together a full field of enthusiastic golfers. Attendees from across the Eddies community came out to enjoy a day of camaraderie, competition, and connection.

I extend my sincere thanks to the committee for their tireless efforts throughout the year, and I look forward to the exciting events and opportunities that await us in 2026.

Farewell Carlo After 42 years of teaching, it’s difficult to fully capture the impact Mr Carlo Sorrentino (Old Boy 1979) has had on our community. His career has spanned generations, and countless students have carried his influence with them long after they left the classroom.

What has always stood out is his consistency and his quiet commitment. Day after day, year after year, he brought patience, steady guidance, and genuine care to his work. He didn’t seek attention or praise, he simply showed up and gave his best, helping students not only learn but grow.

Forty-two years in the same place is more than a career; it’s a contribution to the culture and heart of a school.

His presence has shaped classrooms, colleagues, and families, and his legacy will be felt long beyond his final lesson.

As he steps away from teaching, we’re reminded of the enormous difference one dedicated educator can make.

Old Boy Profile

ANDREW FAHEY Class of 2010 Subheading Looking back, my school years were filled with moments that left lasting impressions. The classrooms, the playground, the corridors, and the Dean buses to and from Queanbeyan were all places where I learned many life lessons. I remember the excitement of school events, the joy of co-curricular activities, and I’m very proud to have been part of the First XV Rugby and First XI Cricket teams. Even though there were many sporting highlights, Eddies was so much more than that. I also remember being part of musicals like Oliver and Bugsy Malone, and I was very proud to receive the College All-Rounder Award in 2010.

As I reflect on my time at school now, sitting in my current office with Mrs Blore next to me and, until recently, Mr Langtry across the way, I often wonder how life has come full circle and brought me back here as a staff member. After leaving school, I tried uni (and failed), worked in construction, and then joined the Army with two of my Eddies mates,

After a few setbacks and then serving five years in the military, I realise how well Eddies prepared me for life’s challenges. From Mr Brady throwing markers at us for talking in class, to the State of Origin-style rugby matches at lunchtime (which were pretty much Queanbeyan versus the rest), to the tough training sessions with Mr Langtry, Mr Roberts, Mr Vaughn and Mr Bond, everyone pushed us to find our best. All the boys competed for the white jersey. We wanted to be the best.

St Edmund’s College is more than just a school for boys; it’s a community and a big part of my whole family. My two older brothers, Adam and Simon, both attended Eddies. Adam’s sons, Luke and Charlie, were here briefly before moving to the Gold Coast. My sister Emma and my brotherin-law, Ryan Gibson (Old Boy, Class of 2005), have two boys, Hugh and Tom, who are currently at the school.

But it’s more than just the boys. I remember my mum, Kathy, working in the canteen when I was here, and she still helps out at the rugby canteen today. My sister Emma now works in Diverse Learning and makes an incredible impact on the boys. My sister Carla Fahey also works here and is currently the Head of CoCurricular and Rugby, she’s doing an awesome job. This isn’t Carla’s first time at Eddies either; when she finished uni, she did some relief work here when I was in Year 11 and 12. Having your sister as a teacher was… interesting.

Some big highlights from my time include beating Nudgee College in the First XV semifinal in Armidale, the cricket tour to Nudgee and playing their First XI on the main oval, camps to Tuross, and the Year 12 retreat to Jindabyne. The friendships formed during those years remain some of the most meaningful relationships in my life. We shared laughter, challenges, and milestones that shaped who we are. The school fostered a genuine sense of community, one built on respect and belonging. I still hold those friendships close. My mates and I regularly catch up at many great Canberra and Queanbeyan spots and reflect on our Eddies days. The boys often ask, “Is that staff member still there?” It says a lot about this place that staff remain here for so long.

Now that I’m beginning my journey as a staff member, I hope I can share my memories and experiences with the boys and create many more of my own. I’m looking forward to seeing how Eddies continues to grow, and I feel privileged to still be part of this great community.

Old Boy Profile

LEIGH ROBINSON Class of 1954 A Call From an Original Old Boy Our team recently took a call from an Old Boy enquiring about the Alumni Magazine. Not long after, Leigh Robinson was on the line, and an hour later he’d shared his remarkable story with us.

Here’s how it went.

My name’s Leigh Robinson. I was born in Queanbeyan in 1941 and started at St Eddies in 1954 after a few years at St Gregory’s Convent School.

I was your typical Year 7 kid who loved my Rugby League. Back in those days Canberra Grammar were the arch-enemies. I’m not sure if it’s still the same now, but gee, we used to give it to each other.

School fees weren’t easy for my parents, so Dad struck a deal. He supplied topsoil for the ovals to help cover the cost. I wasn’t much of an academic, but I was smart in other ways and made plenty of good mates. Most of them have passed on now, but I think of them fondly.

Brother Humphries taught me in my first year and he was a good man. At the time I thought all the brothers were old and grumpy, but really most were only 5 to 10 years older than us. It was a different era. I still remember Brother McCarthy giving me a slap across the face once when I was being cheeky. Apart from that, school felt like a warm place and honestly, some of the best years of my life. I left in Year 10 and went to work with my dad.

By 1960, I’d managed to get hold of two old projectors. Back then, going to the movies was expensive, and plenty of families just couldn’t afford it. I’d always loved messing around with film, so I thought, why not make a hobby of it?

Every Sunday night I’d set myself up in the Methodist church and show movies for anyone who wanted to come along. I never charged a cent. The CWA even got involved, bringing tea, scones and biscuits.

Eventually, someone noticed I was Catholic and they told me to leave. But the RSL stepped in, gave me a space, and even offered tea, coffee, and a bit of beer.

Years later, I wandered back into that RSL and was completely blown away to see a plaque dedicated to me for those Sunday nights. I hadn’t even known they’d done it — it was a lovely surprise.

In 1967, I married my first wife. She was Church of England, and the nuns weren’t keen on us marrying. Biggest mistake of my life, but we had two beautiful daughters, Kirsty and Fiona. They are both much smarter than me and took after their mum. The ingenuity though, they got from me. Fiona even won a bursary to study filmmaking in Brisbane.

Once a new girl at work asked me to give her a hand, so I unscrewed mine, passed it over and said, “Will this do?”

By the mid-70s I was working for Lopilato Brothers. They thought I was pretty handy because they could put me on any machine and I’d figure it out. I could even load a low loader on the first go, which was a bit of a party trick back then. Later I managed a quarry. The pay was good, 200 dollars a week. But one day I slipped into a conveyor belt and it tore my shoulder clean off. I prayed, “Please God, I’ve got a threeyear-old daughter, let me live.” And would you believe it, the machine stopped, reversed and spat me back out.

I picked up my arm, drove 50 kilometres to Woden Hospital, and walked into emergency holding it in my other hand. I asked, “Excuse me, you got any spare right arms in this place?” The nurse said no, so I dropped mine on her desk and passed out. Nine hours of surgery followed.

I died three times. Each time I saw the bright light getting closer, but somehow came back.

After three days in intensive care and a long stint in rehab, I was fitted with a prosthetic arm. I had some fun with it too.

I remarried later on to Jan. She had two daughters and I had two, and while we didn’t have children together, we travelled the world. For some reason, everywhere we went, security always seemed to follow me around. I reckon it was the arm.

In 2004, I returned to the College as a guest alongside my cousin Pat Power for the 50-year celebration. It was fantastic to see all the young fellas coming through. They don’t know it yet, but one day they’ll be my age, looking back and cherishing these years.

These days I’m a grandfather to around ten grandkids, a great-grandfather to two, and I’ve got more nieces and nephews than I can count. Life’s taken me on quite a journey, but Eddies will always be a part of me.

Congratulations to Old Boy Michael Maguire (1984), for leading the Brisbane Broncos to a NRL premiership win, after a 19 year drought.

Congratulations to Old Boy Nick Odgers (2021), who represented Australia at the U22 Modern Pentathlon World Championships and the World Relay Championships, following an outstanding performance that secured the National Title back in April.

Nick has also been awarded a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship for 2026 – a testament to their dedication, talent, and hard work.

The Partnership Program works to improve student engagement, improve academic outcomes for students, enhance the social wellbeing of students and broaden vocational options and skills.

We thank the following organisations for being in partnership and collaboration with us, offering our students a wide range of opportunities and skills.

The College is partnering with the University of Canberra through the new St Edmund’s College Sports Academy. This provides an opportunity for our students to consider a sportsfocused pathway that offers direct, non-ATAR entry to a number of undergraduate courses at the University of Canberra. This means that a tertiary pathway is now open to students who may not have necessarily considered a tertiary education, or who were wanting a more tailored, individual approach to the tertiary pathway.

St Edmund’s College is partnering with the Canberra Raiders through our Sports Science program. The Raiders partnership will provide a clear connection between St Edmund’s College and the Canberra Raiders for students playing Rugby League, maintaining and engaging these students at a high level both academically and physically.

Regular on-field training will be developed by College staff and the Canberra Raiders. The partnership will allow contracted Canberra Raiders juniors to have a pathway to an independent Catholic education with a dedicated pastoral care system.

The College is in partnership with the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra. This partnership will allow our Hospitality students to immerse themselves in all aspects of the Hospitality industry, engage in real work opportunities and work alongside experts in the Hospitality field to develop their skills and competencies, be mentored and coached and build their professional network. This is a wonderful initiative for our students, providing a unique opportunity for them to broaden their skills and options.

Accelerate Physiotherapy will work extensively with our Co-curricular and senior Talented Sports Programs to provide elite level athlete screening, assist in the injury and rehabilitation of student athletes and to help develop athlete knowledge of content studied in senior courses. In a bold step toward addressing Australia's growing shortage of skilled live event production crew, St Edmund’s College has launched StageCraft — a new pilot program designed to prepare high school students for careers in live event production. In collaboration with industry leaders Elite Event Technology and Lexi Sekuless Productions, this unique initiative offers students immersive, real-world training in one of the most in-demand creative industries.
