WE LCO M E Dear Supporters and Friends, Welcome to the Public Interest Law Foundation’s 29th Annual Auction, “The Power of Purpose.” It has been two years since we have been able to gather as a community, and we sincerely appreciate you joining us this evening to support such a powerful cause. Tonight’s PILF Auction, a signature Seattle University School of Law event, is the culmination of more than a year’s worth of work by the Access to Justice Institute, the Advancement Office, and most importantly, the students on the PILF Board.

The direct beneficiaries of tonight’s efforts are the students who will participate in the 2022 PILF Summer Grant Program. Your attendance and generous support this evening signal to our PILF grantees that their work is valued by the legal community. PILF grants allow our students to experience the joy and satisfaction that come from helping others through their summer employment, while also learning critical lawyering skills under the guidance and mentorship of committed lawyers (a great number of whom are Seattle U Law alumni). Many of the students in this program will go on to pursue public interest careers and become leaders in their fields and in our communities.

Global events since our last auction have made it evident that our legal system continues to operate with systems that oppress. Those marginalized by these systems face significantly greater barriers in obtaining justice. Your participation tonight provides assurance that the next generation of lawyers will continue to fight for justice. The students who receive PILF grants will work tirelessly this summer to promote justice and equity by providing legal aid to those who urgently need it, while experiencing firsthand the privilege of being lawyers and the corresponding responsibility to serve others. You will hear more this evening about the future leaders you are supporting and the worthy community organizations that will employ them. As you listen to the inspiring stories of our grant recipients this evening, I hope you will see the enormous good that flows from supporting our students and helping them put their dreams into action.

In thinking about tonight’s theme, “The Power of Purpose,” we invite you to consider what approaching your work with purpose means to you. For Seattle U Law, it has meant being intentional in our response to the legal needs of those most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these efforts, the Housing Justice Collective, a new and innovative partnership between our law school and the Office of Civil Legal Aid (OCLA), aims to develop a pipeline of diverse, competent, and passionate students and attorneys to provide eviction defense services to those experiencing housing insecurity in our state. We are pleased to note that we now have 3 new PILF summer grants funded by OCLA and Northwest Justice Project to help us meet this goal.

The PILF Summer Grant Program is emblematic of Seattle U Law’s commitment to bridging the justice gap and living our mission of educating powerful advocates for justice. Thank you so much for supporting PILF and our wonderful Seattle U Law students, for caring about the underserved in our communities, and for joining us tonight for the 29th annual celebration of this worthy organization!

J U STI C E M A RY E . FA I R H U R ST Washington State Supreme Court (1957–2021) Justice Mary Fairhurst became a justice on the Washington Supreme Court in 2003 and became Chief Justice in 2017. As Chief Justice, she was the court’s chief spokesperson, presided over many landmark cases including writing the majority opinion in State v. Gregory, co-chaired the State’s Board for Judicial Administration, and chaired the Judicial Information System Committee. Before her election to the court, Justice Fairhurst worked for more than 16 years as a Washington State Assistant Attorney General and spent two years as a law clerk at the Washington Supreme Court. She served as President and on the Board of Governors of the Washington State Bar Association and President and on the state board of Washington Women Lawyers.

Justice Fairhurst was very active in improving the justice system, her community, and has won numerous awards. In 2018, Justice Fairhurst was named Womxn of the Year by Seattle University School of Law’s Womxn’s Law Caucus. Since 2011, a PILF grant has been named in Justice Fairhurst’s honor. Justice Fairhurst graduated from Gonzaga University cum laude in 1979 and from its law school magna cum laude in 1984.

U . S . AT TO R N E Y N I C H O L A S W. B ROW N Western District of Washington U.S. Attorney Nicholas W. Brown was nominated by President Joe Biden and took the oath of office on October 8, 2021. A Western Washington native, U.S. Attorney Brown has made history as the first Black U.S. Attorney in Western Washington.

Brown graduated Magna Cum Laude from Morehouse College in 1999 and completed his J.D. at Harvard Law School in 2002. Subsequently, he served from 2003 to 2007 as a Judge Advocate General at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Fort Bliss, and Baghdad, Iraq. For his efforts, Brown was awarded a Bronze Star Medal in 2005.

With deep roots in federal and state government, Mr. Brown served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in Western Washington from 2007 to 2013, and he served as General Counsel to Governor Jay Inslee from 2013 to 2017.

Most recently, he was a partner at Pacifica Law Group.

Mr. Brown has an extensive history volunteering at a number of public service and nonprofit organizations, including the Campaign for Equal Justice, Seattle Ethics and Elections, the Washington State Bar Association Leadership Institute, Seattle Works, and Treehouse.

A SAMPLING OF PILF GRANTEES

R AC H E L S U GA R ’ 2 2 American Civil Liberties Union of Washington Rachel Sugar is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated from the University of Puget Sound, where she studied psychology and Latin American Studies. Rachel loves the Northwest and hopes to practice law in the Seattle area. After working for three years as a domestic violence legal advocate in both Washington and Colorado, Rachel decided to attend law school to pursue a career in legal aid. Rachel is passionate about compassionately advocating for and with individuals who have experienced personal and systemic oppression. For her 1L summer, Rachel was a PILF grantee and interned with Disability Rights Washington, where she provided technical assistance to community members and assisted in research regarding equity in special education. Last summer, Rachel again received a PILF grant and worked at the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington. Her experience allowed her to explore how lawyers can participate in coalition building efforts and take their lead from community.

A SAMPLING OF PILF GRANTEES

JA M I E H E A R N ’ 2 2 Communities for a Better Environment Jamie Hearn was born and raised in Aiea, Hawaii. She received her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of California, Irvine. Before coming to law school, she worked as an outdoor and environmental educator at various public elementary schools in Seattle. During her 1L summer, Jamie clerked for the Tulalip Tribal Court and worked on compiling data to create a uniform bail system and a bench book for the tribe’s child support code. Her passion for serving Indigenous and communities of color resulted in an internship with Communities for a Better Environment (CBE). CBE is a California-based environmental justice organization that works with low-income communities and communities of color to improve environmental health and justice through pollution reduction and building healthy communities. Over the summer, Jamie did legal research to help pass an ordinance in L.A. to ban new oil drilling, worked on cases that enforced state environmental laws that required cities to include an environmental justice element in their housing plans, and challenged an improper CEQA exemption that allowed a charter school to construct a campus on toxic soil.

This recently updated 1967 A-frame provides a unique and cozy getaway from the city. The cabin is 3 bedrooms (2 queen beds, 1 full) and 1.5 bathrooms. Located 20 minutes outside the southeast entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park and 25 minutes from White Pass Ski Mountain, Elk Point is a great place to stay any season of the year. Start your day with a 3-minute walk from the cabin to the Cowlitz river, followed by a morning of board games next to the wood stove while Elk Point’s monthly curated playlist hums in the background. Wi-Fi is provided. Packwood is at the intersection of US Highway 12 and Gifford Pinchot National Forest Road 52.

It’s home to Packwood Brewing Co., the Blue Spruce Saloon, Mt. Goat Coffee, Cruiser’s Pizza, Blanchard’s Market, and in the summer, the Ice Cream Airstream.

Total capacity is 6 adults. 3 nights must be in succession and are limited to Monday night through Thursday night (which is actually the best time – least busy – to visit Mt.
