WE LCOM E Dear Supporters and Friends, Welcome to the Public Interest Law Foundation’s 27th Annual Auction, “Visionaries.” We so appreciate you joining us this evening to support such a wonderful cause. Our PILF Auction is a signature Seattle University School of Law event, and tonight is the culmination of more than a year’s worth of work by a committee of dedicated alumni, the Access to Justice Institute, the Advancement Office, and most importantly, the students on the PILF Board.

The direct beneficiaries of tonight’s efforts are the students who will participate in the 2020 PILF Summer Grant Program. Your attendance and support this evening signals that our PILF grantees’ work is important to the legal community. PILF grants allow our students to experience the joy and gratification that come from helping others through their summer employment, while also learning critical lawyering skills and being guided and mentored by spirited lawyers (a great number of whom are Seattle U Law alumni). Many of the students in this program will go on to pursue public interest careers and become leaders in their fields and in our communities.

As we all know, the justice gap in our communities is widening, and thousands of individuals with legal needs do not have access to legal services. The students who receive PILF grants will work tirelessly this summer to promote justice and equity and to expand capacity to legal aid, while experiencing firsthand the privilege of being a lawyer and the responsibility of serving others. You will hear more this evening about the future leaders you are supporting and the worthy community organizations that will employ them.

In thinking about tonight’s theme, we invite you all to consider what being a “visionary” means to you. For us, being a visionary means being willing to dream about a world in which everyone is treated with the dignity, respect, and humanity they deserve, but also being willing to do the work to make that vision a reality. As you listen to the inspiring stories of our grant recipients this evening, we hope you will see the incredible good that flows from supporting our students and helping them put their dreams into action.

Seattle U Law’s commitment to helping bridge the justice gap and our mission to educate powerful advocates for justice is realized through the PILF Summer Grant Program. TH E H O N O R A B LE J U STI C E M A RY Y U Washington State Supreme Court Mary Yu was appointed to the Washington Supreme Court on May 16, 2014, and subsequently elected in 2014 and 2016. Justice Yu joined the Supreme Court after more than 14 years as an accomplished trial court judge in King County Superior Court where she presided over a wide variety of criminal, civil, and juvenile cases, and presided over hundreds of adoptions and other family law matters.

Prior to becoming a judge, Justice Yu served as Deputy Chief of Staff to King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng and as a deputy in the Criminal and Civil Divisions. Before attending law school, Justice Yu worked in the Peace and Justice Office for the Archdiocese of Chicago first as staff and later as Director of that office following her appointment to the position by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin.

Justice Yu has an extensive record of service both on and off the bench, mentoring young attorneys, law clerks, and students; co-chairing the Court’s Minority and Justice Commission; chairing the Board for Judicial Administration’s Public Trust and Confidence Committee; teaching at Seattle University School of Law and serving as Jurist in Residence; and co-chairing the Washington State Bar Association/University of Washington Law School Leadership Institute. Justice Yu has served on the board of FareStart from 2009–2018, and the advisory board for the University of Washington School of Law’s Gates Public Service Program from 2014–2018. She is personally devoted to the Seattle Girls’ School Mock Trials, serving as their judge for the last 15 years. Justice Yu is a member of the American Law Institute.

E M I LY J U STI N ’ 2 1 Solid Ground Emily attended the University of Washington where she studied Political Science and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. Emily’s motivation to come to law school was entirely motivated by the power the law has on influencing society as a whole and the effect the law can have on individual’s lives. Particularly, she sees day in and day out how the law can transform the lives of indigent people, families, and communities.

This past summer, Emily worked at Solid Ground with the help of a PILF grant. Solid Ground works to end poverty and undo racism and oppression. In a legal capacity, Solid Ground attorneys assist single adults and families whose cash, food, medical, and childcare benefits have been reduced, terminated, or denied. As a legal intern, Emily assisted in this process. Spending her summer doing work at Solid Ground allowed Emily to synthesize her passion for social justice and her knowledge of the law.

VA LLE N SO LO M O N ’ 2 0 Northwest Justice Project Vallen graduated from Seattle University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He chose to go to law school because he wanted to be an advocate for vulnerable communities and those who have historically not been in positions to advocate for themselves.

With that goal in mind, in the summer of 2018 Vallen worked at the King County Bar Association’s Housing Justice Project. During his time at the Housing Justice Project, Vallen was able to work alongside a team that researched and analyzed King County’s evictions from 2017. The report that came as a result of this research played a key role in the passing of legislation for eviction reform in Washington in 2019. This past summer, Vallen worked at the Northwest Justice Project (NJP), in the newly created King County Housing and Consumer Protection Unit as a Rule 9 intern. At NJP, he continued to advocate for low-income tenants facing eviction and other housingrelated issues. Through this work, Vallen has found that advocating for low-income tenants facing eviction and other housing-related issues has implications much further than just housing; in fact, a successful life first begins with a stable home life.
