EXPLORE LOW TIDE WONDERS

Beach naturalists are your tidepool guides by NATASHA DILLINGER

What makes a day on the beach even better? Spending it discovering some of Puget Sound’s most beautiful marine life, of course! Spring and summer’s lowest tides happen during daylight hours, making it the perfect time to take your little explorers down to the water. Tips and tricks

Check the NOAA Tides and Currents website. Negative numbers indicate tides below sea level, which is the best time to look for sea creatures. When you wander down the beach, be aware of the tide action to avoid getting trapped by incoming tides. Dress for success. Rain boots or closedtoed sturdy sandals will make exploring our rocky beaches and slippery seaweed more comfortable. Don’t forget sunscreen and a water bottle. Keep a change of clothes, a towel, and some hand sanitizer in the car for cleanup afterward.

Love our sea life with care. Tidepool creatures are tough but fragile. Use one or two wet fingers to gently touch anything you spot. If you pick up a rock to look underneath, replace it gently. Avoid detaching creatures from their homes as it could permanently damage or kill them. Walk

carefully to avoid crushing anyone hiding in the eel grass or sand. Leave pets at home. Not only are they not allowed at Seattle beaches, but their waste deposits toxins in the water, and their paws can damage the tide pool environment. ID, please. Several maritime organizations host beach naturalists to help you identify what you discover. Check their websites to find out when and where you’ll find their naturalists on the beaches.

• Seattle Aquarium: beaches from Shoreline to Federal Way

• Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium: Owen Beach

• Tacoma Nature Center: Titlow Beach

• Harbor Wildwatch: Gig Harbor

• Environmental Science Center: Seahurst Park, Burien

Best beaches for tide pool exploring Brackett’s Landing

Location: 50 Railroad Ave., Edmonds

Facilities: Limited free 3-hour parking and restrooms

The area between the ferry dock and the north jetty is easily accessible from the parking lot. The large rocks on either end host ochre sea stars and painted anemones galore. Walk slowly along the shoreline to see if you can spot crabs, small fish, and nudibranchs.

Carkeek Park

Location: 950 NW Carkeek Park Road, Seattle

Facilities: Free parking (the upper-level lot is much closer to the beach). You’ll have to take a pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks, down a long flight of stairs to the beach, so make sure you stop at the restrooms near the playground before heading to the beach.

Enjoy the sandy spaces closer to the stairs for aggregating anemones and clams or head north along the beach toward the rocks. An especially tall rock (you’ll know it when you see it) plays host to ochre sea stars, sea cucumbers, and anemones.

Golden Gardens

Location: 8498 Seaview Place NW, Seattle

Facilities: Free parking. Park at the northern end of the lot for the closest access to the tidepools. Restrooms are adjacent to the volleyball courts, playground, and snack bar.

While you’ll have to trek north past the turtle pond and around a bend to reach the best spots, there is plenty of rocky substrate (the surface on which sea creatures attach) to hold an army of sea creatures. This makes it a good spot to visit on summer days when you want to spread out from the crowds. Keep your eyes peeled for rough piddock clams spitting water out of the sand and mottled sea stars hanging on the rocks.

Constellation Park

(aka Charles Richey Sr. Viewpoint)

Location: 3400 Beach Dr. SW, West Seattle Facilities: Free street parking (“local access only” signs make it a low-traffic spot). No restrooms, so plan ahead or pack the toddler potty in the car.

This is a top destination due to the large amount of rocky dwellings for tide pool life to cozy up. It’s one of the few spots we’ve seen feather duster worms in Seattle (watch for their black and red “plumage” that gives them their name), in addition to the sea stars and anemones.

Seahurst Park

Location: 1600 SW Seahurst Park Rd., Burien Facilities: Free parking. Try to find a spot on the lower level for little legs, or take a short walk from the upper parking lot. Restrooms and picnic shelters are available near the playground.

Coast Salish tribes have used this area for thousands of years to gather clams — expect to see clam jets of water regularly spouting from the sand. Watch for crabs skittering through the eelgrass and peep gently under moon snail collars (their gray rings resemble trash at first glance) for nudibranchs. The play ground here is right next to the beach, so you can reward little marine biologists with playtime when the tide comes back in.

Ochre sea stars and anemones cling to surfaces like rocky substrate and dock pilings.

TROLL HUNT IN THE PARKS

They are big, wooden, whimsical, wonderful, and made of reclaimed or found wood and other materials. And if you look hard, you’ll find them in parks (and one Ballard building entrance) all around Puget Sound. Pack up the kids and head out to find Danish artist Thomas Dambo’s ethereal and eye-popping troll sculptures. Dambo doesn’t like to give specific addresses or directions to the trolls.

“It’s more fun for

people to find it,” says Dambo, who creates the trolls in nature for people to discover. The secrecy is part of the game. Can your family check all five off the list? Below is Dambo’s description of each troll, and hints on where to look:

Bruun Idun

Lincoln Park, West Seattle

“In the night, there was a storm, there at the beach where she was born And Idun felt a feeling wrong, and so she walked there in the dawn

And in a flute, the magic horn, a tune so passionate and strong She played for them an orca song to ask them

Frankie don’t even like trolls, cause trolls are also dumb

But Frankie’s mouth’s the only one that says the word of dumb”

Frankie Feetsplinter is one of the few Dambo trolls to come out of the forest into an urban environment. Frankie is the youngest and most irresponsible of all the Trolls in the Way of the Bird King series. It was built on Vashon Island and transported via ferry to the city, and then out to Ballard.

Hint: Go to the National Nordic Museum.

Pia the Peacekeeper Sakai Park, Bainbridge Island

“Pretty pretty please, let’s keep the peace beneath the trees

Hold you in my hand I will remind you with a squeeze

Quiet little people cause your criers make me tired Pia likes to play with people, people they keep quiet”

Pia likes to play with the people beneath the trees. And she likes it when it’s not too noisy.

Hint: Keep in mind that Sakai Park has limited parking. It’s situated approximately one mile from the ferry terminal and can be reached by foot via the Sound to Olympics Trail.

where they all had gone”

Bruun Idun stands on the shoreline of Puget Sound playing her flute to the orcas to ask them why they have all left the Puget Sound. Her flute was made by artist John Halliday, aka Coyote, from the Muckleshoot Tribe.

Hint: Walk down to the waterfront in Lincoln Park and head north.

Frankie Feetsplinter National Nordic Museum, Ballard

“Frankie don’t like slimy fish, cause fishes are all so dumb

And Frankie don’t like little humans, humans are so dumb

breathe in, behold

The trees have sung a story told”

Jakob is around four meters tall and he has a ponytail holder and bracelet made by the Snoqualmie Tribe. He wears a necklace of birdhouses, and is holding on to the two trees while he enjoys a peaceful moment.

Hint: Jakob hangs out approximately a quarter mile from the Issaquah Community Center, somewhere along the Rainier Trail.

Oscar the Bird King Point Robinson Park, Vashon Island

“He swam here from the island, where his momma once had birthed him He walked across the mountains till his giant feet was hurting He spoke a crow and little girl, the Orca he heard him sing

He used to be a little troll, now Oscar is The Bird King”

Oscar was one of the final installments in Dambo’s “Way of the Bird King” exhibition. Towering over a grove of trees in Vashon Island’s Point Robinson Park, Oscar is a whimsical and welcoming king, not at all higher than thou.

Hint: Just roam. You’ll find him.

Remember

Jakob Two Trees Rainier Trail, Issaquah “A thousand circle suns, not old

Time will stretch and loop and fold

So stop, breathe out,

Enjoy the trolls, but don’t climb on them. Want more information? Check out Thomas Dambo’s Trollmap at 3thomasdambo.com/ trollmap

When, what, and why of vaccines in your child’s first year

Keeping our children safe from serious illness is a crucial job for parents. Immunizing them against infections and diseases is a proven, safe and effective way to do that.

To protect young lives, and in some cases to protect lifelong health, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends several immunizations in the first 18 months of your child’s life. Navigating the AAP vaccine schedule might seem complex at first glance, but it’s based on when vaccines work best with children’s immune systems and when they are most vulnerable to certain diseases.

Here is a guide to the AAP recommendations:

At Birth

• Hepatitis B is the first vaccine most babies receive. Because babies infected with hepatitis B have up to a 90% chance of developing chronic infection, which can lead to serious liver disease or liver cancer later in life, the first hepatitis B vaccine dose is recommended within 24 hours of birth.

• Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is extremely common overall and is the top cause of hospitalization for babies. The vaccine is recommended at birth and sometimes administered to pregnant mothers who can pass protective antibodies on to their babies.

Starting at 2 Months Old

• Diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine prevents serious illness from these three diseases, which can each cause severe illness, hospitalization and a risk of death.

• Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine prevents several types of

illness, some life-threatening, including ear infections, lung infections, and meningitis.

• Polio (IPV) vaccine prevents a disease that can cause death and paralysis. Polio outbreaks still occur in the U.S., so unvaccinated children are at risk.

• Pneumococcal vaccine prevents disease caused by bacteria that can cause ear infections, pneumonia, and sometimes sepsis, an overwhelming infection.

• Rotavirus (RV) vaccine prevents the highly infectious virus that is the main cause of diarrhea in children.

6 Months Old

• COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for children younger than 2 years old, who are at

the highest risk for severe COVID-19 and hospitalization. The AAP recommends the COVID vaccine for all young children ages 6 months through 23 months.

• Influenza (flu) vaccine protects against an unpredictable disease that ranges from mild to severe cases requiring hospital care. Annual flu shots are recommended for everyone over 6 months.

12 to 18 Months Old

• The varicella vaccine prevents “chickenpox,” and the Hepatitis A vaccine provides lifelong protection against a serious liver disease.

• Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine protects most people for life from these diseases with serious

consequences. The measles virus can remain in the air for up to two hours, and it incubates for 10 to 14 days, so an infected person could spread it widely before the rash even appears. Nearly 1 in 3 children under age 5 who contract measles end up in the hospital.

There is robust evidence supporting the safety, effectiveness, and necessity of these vaccines, and following the recommended immunization schedule helps babies, children, and teens stay ahead of serious, preventable diseases and protects our community.

What every parent needs to have on hand

10 minutes of child-led play can give your child a sense of self

From that first call of ‘time to get out of bed’ to the last ‘time for lights out’ young children’s days are full of directed requests and expectations from the adults in their lives. Being able to follow directions is important in learning routines, responsibility, and maintaining daily structure.

Unfortunately, sometimes the regimented demands of the day don’t leave much room for special time together.

Setting aside opportunities for child-directed play provides an opportunity for your child to take the lead and show you what they can and want to do. The aim of child-directed play is to allow the child to lead activities and for us parents to go along for the ride.

Dr. Ashok Shimoji-Krishnan, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente Capitol Hill Medical Center, recommends child-directed play to connect with and boost your child’s sense of self. “Joining your child in play lets them know you’re interested in what they do and enjoy spending time with them.”

Ideally, such child-directed time would occur daily, but even if you can only manage it a few times a week, the benefits are powerful and long-lasting. Studies show child-directed play has demonstrated benefits in boosting confidence and independence, enhancing cognitive development and creativity, improving social-emotional skills (such as cooperation, negotiation, and emotional regulation), increases engagement and

focus to tasks, and strengthens the child-caregiver bond.

“Having unstructured play with your child helps improve social bonds between kids and their parents, helps develop the willingness to try new things, fail, and try again, and most importantly, it’s fun to be a kid again with your kid!” says Shimoji-Krishnan.

“It’s important to allow children to truly lead the play,” notes Shimoji-Krishnan. He adds, “If your child wants to pretend to be elephants, wave your arm like a trunk and get your best trumpet sound ready!” It can be a break for parents, too, who might tire of always suggesting

play options.

As adults, it’s challenging to let children direct the play without trying to instruct, correct, or ask too many questions. Remember, child-directed play is time to let children do what they want to do (so long as it’s safe). Here are a few tips for engaging in child-directed play, with the easy acronym, PRIDE.

P: Praise – Give your child specific compliments about activities and behaviors. Giving specific compliments, like “You’re building a really tall tower!”, shows engagement and focused interest compared to the generic “good job.”

R: Reflect – Reflecting back what they’re saying or doing shows you’re listening, especially for young children who are just developing language skills. Reflecting when they say, “build tower” with “you’re building a tower” helps them learn how to use language and shows them how to pay attention.

I: Imitate – Joining in while letting your child lead gives them a sense of control they don’t usually get in their day.

D: Describe – Describing what you and your child are doing shows you’re paying attention, helps them learn language, and lets them see you support what they can do.

E: Enthusiasm – Showing interest and enjoyment in the special time with your child helps show they are important and matter. Let them know, both verbally and with non-verbal cues (smiling, laughing, eye contact), that you’re excited to spend time with your child.

“Letting our kids know they have good ideas and are important to us builds stronger emotional bonds, shows giveand-take in a relationship, and results in better resiliency and improved mental health in the long run. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to relax and find joy in your child and remind us of the joy in parenting and in our children,” remarks Shimoji-Krishnan.

What every parent needs to have on hand

Talking to kids about screen time

helps them have agency in setting up their screen time plan.

As we roll into summer, it can get hard to find ways to occupy all the downtime our kids have. It is a common theme for parents that as school winds down, screen use goes up. Whether it’s social media, video games, or TV, unchecked screen use is correlated with disrupted sleep, shortened attention spans, heightened anxiety, and negative impacts on socioemotional development. Having conversations with your child about screen time and media use helps parents support their child’s well-being and mental health.

Dr. Ashok Shimoji-Krishnan, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente Capitol Hill Medical Center, regularly asks patients about screen time and content, particularly if a child isn’t sleeping well or shows signs of anxiety or other mental health challenges. “It’s easier to coach children on positive habits if they can connect that habit to their overall health and well-being,” says Shimoji-Krishnan.

Research shows that instead of creating rules around screen time, focusing on how that screen time is used to support your child’s well-being is more effective. Shimoji-Krishnan recommends a collaborative approach to screen time with youth and pre-teens. “Having a dialogue helps children understand why boundaries around media and screen time can help them feel good and

“Parents can recognize there can be pluses and minuses to screen time, too,” advises Shimoji-Krishnan. “Are they gaming with friends and engaging in conversation, or are they scrolling on their phone alone? Some screen use helps build and maintain connections, particularly with people who aren’t in their immediate social circle. It is important, though, to know what they’re doing during their screen time and with whom they may be interacting.”

Here are a few tips for navigating screen time with your child:

• Keep an eye on the content. Watch content with your child, a strategy called “co-viewing.” It’s one way to connect and discuss what your child is watching. Get a sense of how it’s impacting them by asking things like “How do you think that character feels?” or “What’s exciting to you about this?” This can foster connection and start a discussion about the content, helping you learn what interests your child.

• Notice what’s missing. Screen time might be crowding out other activities that promote well-being, like solid sleep, in-person socializing, or exercise. Discuss which are most essential for your child’s healthy development and brainstorm how they might engage in other positive activities while still having some screen time.

• Create screen-free spaces or times. Intentional breaks remind us to engage in other activities like chatting with friends

or getting outside. You can negotiate screen-free zones or activities that everyone adheres to, like during family meals.

• Discuss social media boundaries. It’s easy to get caught up in social media. It can expose kids to unrealistic ideals for appearance and lifestyle. Talk to your child about what motivates them on social media and how they might enjoy social media, but keep some perspective. It’s also ok to consider limiting social media access or avoiding it entirely until a particular age.

• Find other content. Refocus on other kinds of entertainment at home, like reading or other offline activities. Figure out activities that you both enjoy, like board games or crafting, and try to engage in those activities together.

“It’s great to see parents and kids check in about media use,” said Shimoji-Krishnan. “Instead of focusing only on the amount of screen time, talking about activities that interest your child fosters parent-child bonds and helps them identify alternative things to engage in.”

What every parent needs to have on hand

Bullying behaviors can slip past parents, here’s how to help

How do you know if your kid is being bullied or bullying others?

Knowing what’s going on with your pre-teen or teen can be a challenge sometimes, but when it comes to bullying, it’s often up to adults to identify and respond to bullying behavior.

Conflict and hurt feelings are common among adolescents, but bullying goes beyond one-off teasing or an argument. Bullying is acting in ways that purposely scare or harm another person. Bullying behavior includes repeated, targeted behavior to create and maintain a power imbalance.

“Social interactions for pre-teens and teens can be incredibly complex and fluid. Kids are at an age where their brain is relying heavily on immature emotional and reward-driven centers and that can lead to big emotional responses,” says Dr. Ashok Shimoji-Krishnan, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente Capitol Hill Medical Center. “Because adolescents are less likely to volunteer information, parents need to ask questions and listen, along with looking for evidence of bullying.”

Kids who bully usually focus on someone who is weaker or more alone. Bullying can present as physical violence like hitting, shoving, or tripping. It can also include emotional acts like repeatedly making fun of the way another teen acts, looks or talks, and can include social acts like excluding kids from activities or social groups, spreading rumors, or sending hurtful messages or pictures in

texts, emails or online.

“Discussing feelings with the adolescents in your life can help identify bullying behavior. Our kids might not tell us they are worried about bullying or may not even recognize it themselves,” advises Shimoji-Krishnan. He suggests asking open-ended questions like “How are things going at school?”; “What do you think of the other kids in your class?”; or “Is anything bothering you at school?” to assess suspected bullying without kids being worried about judgement or embarrassment.

Some signs that point to bullying include:

• Physical injuries like cuts or bruises.

• “Losing” personal items like clothing, electronics, or money.

• Poor sleep and frequent headaches.

• Crying frequently or acting differently.

• A sudden drop in grades.

• Avoiding people or places your kids normally enjoy.

• Losing interest in school or other preferred activities.

• Withdrawing from social engagements or social media.

• Bullying others. Some children respond to being bullied by feeling anxious and becoming aggressive themselves.

If you suspect or learn that your child is being bullied, get involved to stop it. Don’t wait to see how things play out. Children, including teens, need help to identify and stop bullying behavior. Work with your

child on how to respond safely, express their feelings, and how to find help.

Report the bullying to the school and ask them for a plan to address the situation. Healthcare providers can help you recognize the signs of bullying, offer supportive referrals to address physical and mental health concerns, and can be a trusted voice with your teen as well.

Now Open – The New Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital

Designed just for kids

hen a child needs critical medical attention, families in the Puget Sound area and beyond can get the most sophisticated care in a setting that combines the best of science and technology with caring professionals in a beautiful new facility.

MultiCare opened its brand new, stateof-the-art Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma on May 16 and welcomed its first 57 patients.

Built from the ground up just for kids, the five-story, $479 million facility can serve 82 patients in private rooms (where their families can also stay). The 24-hour pediatric-only emergency department has 29 exam rooms.

The hospital also has eight operating rooms, a helipad, and a mental health crisis stabilization unit. It is Western Washington’s only Level II pediatric trauma center and has a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital will serve newborns through adolescents from across the state, as well as Oregon and Idaho, with a full spectrum of care.

Beyond the facts, figures, and technical terminology, Mary Bridge Children’s is also a beautiful and welcoming place, home to hundreds of specially trained, driven, and committed professionals who provide child-focused care, healing, and hope.

“Children are not small adults,” explains Jeff Poltawsky, president of Mary Bridge Children’s. “Everything has to be specific to them.” They also have different emotional needs and require different types of support.

Special spaces throughout the facility are designed with kids and families in mind, recognizing that play and movement are essential to children’s healing.

There are two playrooms plus an additional space designed just for teenagers. There’s a special therapy gym to help children build strength and confidence before returning home. A garden patio on the top floor is a place to play, relax, and get some fresh air.

There’s also an on-site bistro and coffee shop.

“By having unique spaces for all age groups, we make it as familiar and comfortable as possible for kids,” Poltawsky says.

There are even mobile Nintendo gaming stations, powered by Starlight Children’s Foundation, designed to bring joy to children in the hospital. Additionally, Mary Bridge Children’s has a gaming and technology specialist trained to tailor gaming experiences to children in a medical setting.

The decor was thoughtfully designed to reflect the Northwest and the patient population. Poltawsky describes the hospital interior as “beautiful and also playful.”

“Every child will see themself in the spirit of the building somewhere,” he said. Local artists were involved in designing spaces that reflect our area: the sea, mountains, forests, and rivers. They added special touches and fun details to be discovered upon close examination.

All in all, Poltawsky said, the design creates a safe, pleasant, comforting environment that also sends a message: You’re in good hands here.

The specially trained staff definitely reinforces that message.

Child Life Specialists aim to reduce kids’ anxiety by involving them in their care and explaining things in ways they can understand.

The rooms, all private, have beds and bathrooms for families.

At 305 South L Street, the new Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital is across the street from the building it previously shared with MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital and stands on the site of the original 1955 children’s hospital at the corner of Division Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

It has dedicated parking, a single, easy-tofind entrance, accessible outdoor green spaces, and wide sidewalks. The hospital is also easily accessed via the Tacoma Link Light Rail.

Five years in the making, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital might be Tacoma’s “best-kept secret,” Poltawsky says.

There’s also a special Tacoma story that unites the current and future Mary Bridge Children’s hospitals.

Of the $479 million cost to build the new facility – much of which was spent locally – $106 million came from local donations, including $10 million from the Mary Bridge Brigade, which had been the driving force behind the original, 1955 hospital. That facility became possible when local physician Dr. Albert Bridge bequeathed his estate to build a children’s hospital, which was named for his mother, Mary.

“Their legacy continues,” Poltawsky said, “and will position Mary Bridge to be a dominant force in pediatrics.

“It’s a new era of world-class health care here in everyone’s backyard.”

ONE MOM’S STORY ABOUT CMV AND WHAT SHE WISHES MORE PARENTS KNEW

Lisa Aamot didn’t know what was wrong with her, but she knew something was wrong – very wrong.

It was the spring of 2017, and the Bellingham mom was 33 weeks pregnant with daughter Kinley, her second child. She had been battling varying degrees of cold symptoms for weeks, but now found herself with an intense side ache.

The first doctor she reached out to, her OB/GYN, dismissed her symptoms as, “You’re pregnant,” but her primary care doctor shared her concerns and ordered bloodwork. It showed something wrong with her liver, right lung, and right kidney. Her eyes were becoming jaundiced by the time she was admitted to the labor/delivery unit at UW Medicine in Seattle.

She eventually learned, from a medical team in full personal protective equipment (a sight that would not become common until three years later during COVID), that she had cytomegalovirus, commonly known as CMV.

Never heard of CMV? You’re not alone, but it’s something we all need to know about. June is CMV Awareness Month, and Lisa is helping the Washington State Department of Health spread the word. So is Kinley.

CMV is a common, but often unknown virus, that can cause serious health complications in babies if an expectant mom contracts it during pregnancy. In extreme cases, it can cause pregnancy loss.

One in 200 babies is born with CMV, which is the leading infectious cause of childhood disabilities and the leading non-genetic cause of childhood hearing loss. It can cause cerebral palsy, seizures, and developmental delays. Advocates want to share two key messages:

• Precautions that pregnant women should take to avoid getting CMV and potentially spreading it to their newborn.

• The need for diagnosis and testing of potentially exposed infants.

Back to Lisa’s story: Baby Kinley was born showing no obvious symptoms of CMV, but because of her mom’s diagnosis, she was tested. When the results came back, a nurse unfamiliar with the condition misread them. First came good news: Kinley had tested negative for CMV. A few minutes later, the opposite: Kinley was positive for CMV.

“We went from happy, elated, and relieved to absolutely devastated,” Lisa recalls.

That began a time of loneliness and anxiety for the mother of a child with a relatively unknown disorder. “I had to start advocating for myself and my baby,” she says.

She found support online that she likened

to “hands reaching out in the dark.” As time went on, she says, “I wanted to be that hand for other women.”

She went on to have a third child after a healthy pregnancy, during which she was extra-extra careful with things like handwashing and not sharing food or utensils, particularly with kids (more on that in a bit).

As for Kinley, she experienced what are called focal simple seizures in her first year, plus headaches. Then the symptoms tapered off. The family thought they were out of the woods, at least for a while, because CMV symptoms in kids often continue until around age 6, plateau, then spike again at the onset of puberty.

Kinley’s experience has been different. She turned 9 this spring and began reporting that she could not hear out of one ear. “We don’t know if it will continue to progress,” says Lisa, as the family enters a new chapter in their CMV journey. They are very thankful for a pediatrician who has been “amazing, helpful, and a great advocate,” taking extra steps to learn about CMV.

Like her mom, Kinley wants to help spread the word about CMV so that others can have an easier time than she did. Her mom says people often find Kinley quiet, and that she’s been described as an “old soul,” but she is also silly and joyful. “She has this quiet tenacity and an adventurous spirit,” her mom says. She loves playing soccer, gymnastics, and traveling.

Here’s what Lisa, Kinley, and the Washington State Department of Health most want you to know:

CMV is spread through contact with body fluids, so the best practices for avoiding it include:

• Not sharing food, utensils, drinks, or straws, especially with young children.

• Avoid contact with saliva when kissing a child.

• Not sharing a toothbrush.

• Washing hands with soap and water after wiping noses, changing diapers, feeding a child, or handling toys.

Common symptoms of CMV include fever, sore throat, fatigue, and swollen glands, but these symptoms can be mild or even absent.

If a mom tests positive for CMV before giving birth, the labor can be handled differently to protect the baby. In addition, a newborn showing symptoms of CMV can be given antiviral medication.

Testing for congenital CMV can happen until 21 days after birth. Testing can be done using blood, saliva, or urine, but saliva or urine is preferred.

As for Lisa and Kinley, they will continue spreading the word in June and every month. Says Lisa: “There has to be more awareness around this.”

AT THE MUSEUM OF FLIGHT, SCIENCE TAKES OFF

The recent Artemis II lunar flyby was mesmerizing to those of us watching from Earth. The crew’s mission was ambitious and their enthusiasm was infectious, at times emotional and even suspenseful in the moments before we knew for sure that they had successfully splashed down.

The Museum of Flight in Seattle has a message for kids: You can do that. You can be an astronaut, or you can work in Mission Control, commercial aviation, manufacturing, or any number of other fields right here in the Puget Sound area.

“How can we inspire them?” asks Rafael Gallardo, director of education programs and initiatives, summing up one of the Museum’s primary missions. He and Clare Tally-Foos, Aerospace Camp Experience manager, talked about the work that drives them – and about what they want kids to know.

Some of their messages: You can do this. Science is not scary. Aviation and aerospace have a place for you, no matter who you are,

where you live, or what your background is.

“There is a huge array of options out there,” says Tally-Foos. “My passion is to create an environment where every kid can feel confident.”

The Museum has a variety of educational offerings going on all the time, but one of its signature programs is the summertime Aerospace Camp Experience, or ACE.

There, kids as young as kindergarten age and up through middle school get what Tally-Foos calls “bite-sized exposures” to aerospace-related fields through activities that are so much fun that it’s easy to forget they are also educational.

The younger kids play as space explorers in a solar system obstacle course, experiment with sound waves, launch rockets or design a spy disguise.

As they get older, campers learn more about actual jobs and the skills required to have those jobs.

But this is not AP Physics. “This is an entry point, an inspiration phase,” Gallardo says. It’s where a kid might realize: “I don’t have to build or design an airplane, I could fly the thing!”

(For the record, you could also inspect it, maintain it, design its interior, or map out its travels, to name just a few options.)

And let’s not forget: Engineering, coding, and manufacturing are all in-demand skills in aerospace and aviation fields, but so are curiosity, creativity, teamwork, and the ability to ask good questions.

“Soft skills are really valuable,” says Tally-Foos. “There is a place for everyone, if they’re interested.”

It’s not about training for a career, it’s about being exposed to possibilities – while having fun. “We create an environment where every kid can feel confident, and where they can say, ‘I’ve done science and been successful,’“ Tally-Foos says.

“We are all able to be science doers, system thinkers, and problem solvers – and here are some ways that could look in your future.”

A typical day at a weeklong ACE session includes moving between three different types of activities:

• Hands-on learning: Depending on age, this could include art, science experiments, or technical projects.

• Time spent in the Museum galleries or behind-the-scenes collections.

 An older camper learns skills required in the aerospace-related fields during the Aerospace Camp Experience (ACE).

• “Camp” activities: games, crafts, stories, team-building, outside time. “We definitely lean into the informal side of the education spectrum,” Tally-Foos says. “We know it’s summer and that kids learn differently then. We do a bunch of activities, so kids can find the pieces they really like.”

“The idea is not to make it intimidating, but to make it fun,” Gallardo adds. “How can we hook them and make them feel welcome and seen?”

The Museum particularly seeks to reach out to traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities, and some financial assistance is available for ACE programs that run all summer and serve hundreds of students each year.

The camps are run by Museum staff, some of whom are former camp participants who have gone on to study or work in the aerospace industry. In addition, the Museum brings in a variety of other professionals to talk about their jobs and their lives. A goal is for campers to see themselves – their strengths, their interests, their personalities – in the people they look up to and learn from.

Because, seriously, most 6-year-olds aren’t making career plans, and middle-schoolers might not be hot to do that, either. The Museum keeps things fun and casual while still emphasizing curiosity, teamwork, and experiential learning.

But coding a robot? Hanging out in a space shuttle trainer? Taking a field trip to an airplane factory? Those are the things summer memories are made of – and the moments where plans and dreams begin to grow.

And they’re the things that teach young people: “I can do that.”
