Trust Their Abilities and Their Confidence Will Delight You

An 18-month-old carefully lifts a small, open glass to her mouth. She takes a drink, then carefully puts it back on a small table. If it tips, she cleans up the spill herself with a small sponge. When done, she gets up and pushes her tiny chair back to the weaning table, and toddles off in search of her next activity. She is independent. She purposefully controls her movement. She acquires dexterity and the deep confidence that comes from becoming capable and feeling trusted. How do you build confidence? In Montessori, the magic happens in a prepared environment, where trained, caring teachers help each child gain the independence skills she so urgently wants to achieve.

School Directory

How to choose a school

about getting into a select school, might be tempted to rehearse for visits and interviews, but the best advice you can give children is to be themselves. Don’t give them advice to “Be sure you do this and do that, and don’t do this and don’t do that.” The person interviewing your child just wants to get to know them, in order to assess whether they would be a good fit at the school.

by SEATTLE’S CHILD STAFF

1. Take your time

Websites, open houses, and virtual and drop-in visits will give you a flavor of a school’s culture and personality, say the admissions directors we spoke to who’ve collectively seen thousands of parents and kids go through the difficult process of choosing a school. But if you want a deeper understanding, you need to invest some time in the classroom. And it’s not enough to pop into classes for a few minutes of observation. Do it that way, and you won’t have any context for what’s going on. You’ve got to talk to people and avoid visits that are heavily scripted. The best scenario is for prospective students to spend a day at a school with longer stretches in classrooms and opportunities to chat with students. For checking out elementary schools, it’s great for parents to take time in the classroom to see how teachers run their classes.

S H U TTE RSTOCK

2. Get the real scoop

Administrators and teachers will try to show their schools at their best. To get the real skinny, help your child check in with a few students currently attending the school. This conversation works best out of earshot of adults so the students will be uninhibited and can speak frankly. Urge your child to ask, “Do you enjoy this school? Are you

6. Parents, chill out

having fun?” Typically, kids will be very candid about what they do and don’t like. When considering elementary schools, parents might want to ask the same questions of a few students they encounter on a school visit.

3. Give your kid a say

While parents will likely write the tuition check, the kids will be walking the halls and taking the classes. Once they reach a certain age, they deserve some say in school choice. For kids in sixth grade and younger, if they have a strong reaction to a school, parents should listen to their opinion, but the parents should make the decision. By ninth grade, it’s a different situation. By

that age, input on the decision should be at least 50-50 or more for the child.

4. This isn’t your chance at a “do-over”

Robotics lab, class trips abroad, drama club with real costumes and sets – many of these offerings are appealing to any age. It’s tempting for some parents to fantasize about having their own doover, complete with all the bells and whistles. Remember - whether or not you think you would have loved a school is not going to be any kind of a predictor as to whether your child will be happy there.

5. Kids, be yourselves

Parents and kids, anxious

Remember that this is about what your child needs to be a happy person, not your dream for their future. Your anxiety is going to rub off on your child. Try to relax and realize that the schools are going to work with you to figure out whether they provide the right environment for your child.

7. Seek a happy fit

Repeatedly, admissions directors we spoke to urged parents to ask whether the school they are considering is a place “where my child would be happy and comfortable spending seven, eight, nine, or 10 hours a day?” Of course, the kids need to learn key academic material, but they should also love coming to school and be in a place where they will feel safe exploring new interests. Every child has unique needs - your job is to find the school where YOUR child will thrive.
