What they do: Northwest Harvest is the only nonprofit food bank distributor operating statewide in Washington with a network of 375 food banks, meal programs and high-need schools. Through this network, they provide more than 2 million meals every month. With distribution centers throughout Washington, Northwest Harvest reaches rural communities where people in need would otherwise go hungry.

Details: Volunteers 15 and younger or groups of 16- and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by a parent or chaperone. Shifts are a minimum of 2 hours and must be scheduled in advance.

High school coaches can satisfy community service hours, earn hourly pay or deferred college tuition. All eighth grade coaches are volunteers. Younger children can host a book drive for Team Read. Details: Coaches must have a minimum 2.7 GPA, good attendance and behavior record, complete an essay and have three signed references. Applications are accepted twice a year, in September and December. Once a student has been accepted as a coach, they attend three training sessions.

Teen Feed 4740 B University Way NE Seattle, WA 98105 206-522-4366, volunteer@teenfeed.org teenfeed.org Kids can help: Ages 10 and older What they do: In 1987, Teen Feed began to “meet youth where they are.” Today, Teen Feed provides warm meals, basic needs items, and supportive connections to over 900 youth annually in need in University District, Auburn, and Rainier Beach. In addition to their meal program which runs 365 days a year, Teen Feed provides the only consistent street outreach program in Seattle’s University District, a magnet area for homeless youth. How you can help: Meal teams consist of five to 15 people ages 10 and older, who provide and serve hot, nutritious meals to youth at the Teen Meal Program. Meal Team Members provide food, prepare, and serve the meals, and clean the kitchen. Details: The Meal Team Lead must complete a volunteer orientation as well as obtain a Washington State Food Handlers Permit. The other members of the team don’t need these, but it is recommended. This is a good opportunity for a church or scout group.

They also manage The Wearhouse, a free store that provides youth with clothing, shoes, school supplies and toys. How you can help: Volunteers contribute by sorting donations, organizing and preparing merchandise, and setting the store up for shopping days. Shifts are 2 to 4 hours. Families can also help by hosting a donation drive to help stock the Wearhouse.

How you can help: Volunteer as a family at the food bank Community Volunteer Nights or Pop-Up Food Pantry. Volunteers sort food donations and repackage bulk food into individual client sizes. Other special events and projects needing volunteers can be found online. Teens can join a Youth Action Team which meets once a month for leadership training and to work on various service projects. Families can also host a food drive to help supply their pantries. Details: The Everett Food Bank Community Nights happen on the second Tuesday of each month. Space is limited, so register online ahead of time. The Pop-Up Food Pantries are Monday mornings. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

How you can help: Youth volunteers can participate in one-day work parties throughout the Puget Sound area. Youth-specific work parties provide a unique opportunity for young people to learn about trail maintenance while meeting other people. High school students can spend a week on the trail during a “Youth Vacation,” when they learn about building and maintaining hiking trails in a teamwork-oriented environment. Details: Kids younger than 14 must be accompanied by an adult. After five work parties, volunteers earn their very own green hard hat with their name on it. Teens can earn up to eight community service hours each day. Youth Vacations are for students ages 14 to 18.

Last year they served more than 9,000 children, adults and families in King County with housing services, baby supplies, counseling services, domestic violence intervention and more. How you can help: An easy way for children to get involved is the Kids Helping Kids Campaign. Children can start a penny drive, host a lemonade stand or bake sale, celebrate their birthdays with a benefit party for homeless kids or dream up their own way to collect donations.
