President

With so much going on at our university these days, it is particularly important for us to articulate a vision for where we want to be in the years ahead. When I look out at Seattle University’s horizon, I can already see the beginnings of our future taking shape.

It starts, as it always does for me, with our students and alumni who represent the very best of our institution, challenging us to remain faithful to our mission and making their presence and impact more deeply felt in our city, our region and beyond.

One graduating student at commencement perhaps said it best and in the fewest words by what she had emblazoned on the top of her mortarboard: “Enter to learn; leave to serve.” That’s what we are all about!

Looking at the future of Seattle University, I see an institution that is becoming ever more connected and indispensable to the city of which we are a part. We are proud to be the independent Jesuit university in the heart of Seattle. In the years ahead, Seattle University will become all the more so Seattle’s university.

When I look out on the horizon I see a university anchored by the largest project in our history, the Center for Science and Innovation, which will give our incredibly gifted students and faculty the resources they need to advance our society’s collective knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I see us expanding upon already tremendous collaborations with our neighbors through the Seattle University Youth Initiative while significantly furthering our global engagement efforts.

I see emerging a Seattle University that is more closely aligning itself with the industries and needs of our region. That includes, among other new and future programs, our School of New and Continuing Studies, which we launched this year to give adult learners an opportunity to complete their bachelor degrees or a certificate. I also see a growing role for the university to lead our region in contemplating the teachings of the Catholic Church. I am proud that our Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture is dedicating the year to exploring Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change and I look forward to continued dialogue on this and other issues the Pope is challenging us to confront.

With all of these and other realities coming into being, I see a thriving university in a dynamic city and one of the most vibrant Jesuit universities in the world.

This is a vision worth striving for. It inspires me and I hope it also inspires you.

Dan Dombrowski Katie Eilers, ’13

PROFESSOR DAN DOMBROWSKI ADDRESSES EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT Dan Dombrowski, professor of philosophy, was invited to testify before the European Union Parliament last fall.

His address was part of a forum on “Religion, Human Rights and a Secular Europe.” The forum, as described in the program, brought together “(Members of Parliament), staff from institutions, journalists and civil society to discuss the rise of anti-human rights extreme religious lobby groups in European institutions.”

Dombrowski was asked to speak largely because of his extensive research and writing on American political philosopher John Rawls, whose perspectives on political liberalism apply to the questions now facing Europe.

As European countries become increasingly more secular, Dombrowski says, “they are struggling conceptually to understand the roles of religion and politics.”

In his 15-minute address to Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, Dombrowski acknowledged the tension between “pure inclusivism” and “pure exclusivism.” As he said at the forum, “The proper task is to find the right balance between these two extremes in a view that could be called partial inclusivism.”

ALBERS ALUMNI NAMED AS INFLUENTIAL LEADERS IN BUSINESS Mohamed Alabbar, ’81 (business administration) and Gary Brinson, ’66 (finance) have a lot in common. Both are graduates of the Albers School of Business and Economics and both received honorary doctorates from the university (2007 and 2014, respectively). And now, both have been chosen to be among the first 100 “influential leaders” by the AACSB International, the global accrediting body and membership association for business schools.

“Brinson and Alabbar’s work exemplifies the innovative mindset and meaningful contributions to society that Seattle U graduates display around the world and every day—whether they operate within large corporations, small businesses or the nonprofit sector,” says Albers Dean Joseph Phillips.

Seattle University nursing alumna Katie Eilers, ’13, MPH, MSN, RN, was one of 10 nurse innovators honored with the 2015 “Culture of Health: Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing” award from the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action, spearheaded

by AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

“Katie exemplifies an ideal graduate of Seattle University College of Nursing where our mission is to educate and inspire leaders to transform healthcare for a just and humane world,” says Dean Kristen M. Swanson.

Currently, Eilers is the assistant nursing director of community health at Kitsap Public Health District in Kitsap County, Wash.

Impacts of an SU education are far reaching When Abe Romo, ’06, was scouting for schools to earn an engineering degree, Seattle University’s mission and emphasis on social justice resonated with him. And then there was the location.

“I wanted to attend a school that aligned with my principles,” he says. “The icing on the cake was the location. Seattle really attracted me since the first time I laid my eyes on the Emerald City and SU offered the perfect balance of a good size school in the heart of the city.”

Beyond its prime location, SU offers students opportunities to develop their “personal, professional and spiritual selves,” says Romo.

“The faculty is committed to helping students reach their goals and really live out the university’s mission. SU also has a good lens on social issues that are impacting our community, nation and planet and encourages students to take action to be the change we want to see.”

Currently, Romo is applying his mechanical engineering degree as a senior engineer at Puget Sound Energy, where he also manages a program to prevent natural gas explosions. He attributes his SU education with equipping him with the skills

to be successful professionally and on a personal level.

“I would say my whole university experience allowed me to tune in on my ‘soft skills.’ These soft skills—or people skills—have been instrumental for me in my professional life. I learned to be a good communicator and clearly share my ideas with others as well as how to really listen and aim to understand things,” he explains. “SU empowered me to question things, take action and be bold. This combination has allowed me to advance in my career and also in my personal life.”

For Romo, his connection to the university remains strong, both as an alum of the Costco Scholars program and the engineering school where he returns to give presentations to incoming students.

And what’s Romo’s advice for these students?

“Take advantage of all that SU has to offer. Devote time to really think about what you want to do and what impact you can have. Just get involved in worthwhile things and have a great time. College is life changing and surely you will make some great connections there.”

The research behind the science In summer of 2014, Mikaela Ebner, ’16 (biochemistry), worked with Ian Suydam, assistant professor of chemistry, studying drug delivery for HIV prevention. “It was an amazing experience to be able to work as a researcher full time,” says Ebner. “It really helped me solidify the fact that I want to do research after I graduate.”

This past summer, she continued her research work as an intern in a lab at Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany. She was investigating rotaxanes, which she describes as “large, complex organic molecules that have a myriad of applications.” Some of these applications include use as longlasting dyes and for drug delivery.

The internship came about through a program called RISE, which connects students with research-based internships in science and engineering.

For Ebner, whose career aspirations include doing research in a lab setting—with a focus on pharmaceuticals or drug delivery— the value of her research as an undergrad will help in reaching these goals.

“I think the most important thing about undergraduate research is the chance to challenge yourself and grow as a scientist,” she says. “…Undergraduate research, especially at Seattle University, offers you the chance to have good relationships with professors beyond just taking their classes.”

DO THE TALKING Well before he started thinking about college, Naod Sebhat, ’19, knew quite a bit about the Seattle University Youth Initiative, the largest-ever community engagement project in the university’s history, now in its fifth year.

His father Asfaha Lemlem, coordinator of the Yesler Terrace Computer Lab and Learning Center, partners with Seattle U and the Youth Initiative to locate any number of resources to assist those he serves.

While his father may have given him a nudge toward Seattle U, Sebhat found his own way.

It began with JustServe, an organization that connects volunteers with opportunities, and a Center for Community Engagement event that brought together students from SU and various Seattle high schools.

“We met at the Seattle U Student Center to discuss social justice issues and the environment. After the meeting, we did a service-related activity. I went to a church in Fremont where a group of us prepared disaster relief kits for the homeless. Then we picked up trash. It wasn’t a huge impact, but it has a huge impact on you, yourself,” Sebhat says.

Before his junior year in high school, Sebhat took part in a summer project that developed photography and video pieces related to Yesler Terrace, its rich history and redevelopment. Associate Professor Claire Garoutte, who heads SU’s photography program, engages new teens each summer in the multimedia project.

“I gained a lot of basic skills about photography and video editing, and I also learned a lot about community,

one where my father spends much of his time,” says Sebhat.

A growing sense of community convinced him to join other SU students who work for the Center for Community Engagement and the Youth Initiative at Bailey Gatzert Elementary School 12 hours a week.

On Mondays and Wednesdays, he serves as one of several leads in an after-school program.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, he provides teacher support in a fourth-grade math class, giving attention to those students who might appear lost when they’re grappling with concepts like fractions.

Taking community relations at Alaska Airlines to new heights Humility is what keeps Shaunta (Van Brackle) Hyde, ’92, downto-earth and sensible.

It has served her well in a winning career path that spans commercial television, government relations, aviation policy and higher education leadership.

After nearly 12 years with Boeing, Hyde became managing director of community relations for Alaska Airlines in 2014.

Today, this Seattle U graduate urges millennials who become riveted on a single career goal to take risks and consider more of a winding path like hers.

“It really is about the journey, not the destination,” Hyde tells them.

Hyde has a knack for being in the right place at the right time to build her skills and the smarts to be drawn to great opportunities.

An interest in public service and the government came from a work-study position for the City of Seattle. Before long she was part of a team that set up community centers for Meadowbrook, Delridge, Garfield, Rainier and Bitter Lake.

After a four-year stint in government relations for King County, Boeing came knocking on Hyde’s door. After lobbying for seven years in Boeing Corporate, Hyde became director of global aviation policy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

She has a hunch it was her LinkedIn profile that led Alaska SU

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016

Airlines her way in search of someone to lead its community relations department.

So Hyde went from working for a big airplane manufacturing company, where she saw how planes were made, to Alaska Airlines, where she now can watch how airplanes are managed.

“What really attracted me was that I would be creating opportunities for Alaska Airlines and its amazing employees to be more engaged and make a difference for youth,” Hyde explains.

Hyde gives Seattle U considerable credit for teaching her how to balance her education, career, spirituality, self and family.

Family is important to Hyde who along with husband Al are the parents of Chayton and Chandler. They were among the earliest couples to be married in the Chapel of St. Ignatius 17 years ago. John Whitney, S.J., who was then alumni chaplain and is now pastor at St. Joseph Parish on Capitol Hill, officiated.

“That Shaunta is a success is no surprise to anyone who ever met her, certainly not to anyone who worked with her. We all thought she was a success before she even left the doors of Seattle U,” says Father Whitney.

When asked to describe the proudest moment in her career, Hyde has no hesitation, only clarity. “Right now!”

Business Growth There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the newly remodeled space on the Eastside in Bellevue into which Albers moved into this fall. Says Steve De Bruhl, senior project manager in Facilities Services, “The space is ideally suited for a variety of teaching and learning styles and programs.”

Albers first established a presence in Bellevue in 1989, and today nearly 100 students are currently enrolled in courses taught at the Eastside location. The university is hoping to offer programs from other colleges and schools in the future, including day classes as part of the School of New and Continuing Studies.

School of the Future

The School of New and Continuing Studies (NCS) will offer classes in the Digital Cultures and Organizational Leadership degree programs beginning this spring.

The new school was established to provide a high-quality Jesuit education for working adults and offers baccalaureate and certificate programs that support part-time study and hybrid courses, combining online and in-class instruction. An existing certificate program, Web Development, which is designed along these lines, will also be part of the new school.

Anne Van Ness Farrell is perhaps best known as the former president and CEO of The Seattle Foundation, who grew the once small, regional body into one of the nation’s top community foundations.

Seattle University conferred the St. Ignatius Medal, the university’s highest honor, to Farrell in recognition of her steadfast commitment to Seattle University and the region.

“I’m awed by the importance of [the St. Ignatius Medal] and what it represents—a ‘just and humane world,’” says Farrell. “That’s what I want for this world as well.”

Farrell’s relationship with Seattle University began in the mid-1980s. In 1987, she accepted an invitation from President William J. Sullivan, S.J., to join the Board of Regents and within a few years became a Trustee. Now a lifetime Trustee Emeritus, Farrell co-chaired Seattle University’s capital campaign from 2003 to 2009 and oversaw the successful $37 million drive for the Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons.

In more than 20 years at the helm of the Seattle Foundation, Farrell grew its endowment from $10 million to several hundred million through meaningful connections.

Farrell sees her contributions to the world as “a champion for people who are in positions to influence the workplace and organizations, both public and private.”

Ben Bernanke, former chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, gave a talk on campus as part of an event SU co-sponsored with Town Hall Seattle. Bernanke was in town to promote his new book, The Courage to Act and was interviewed by former Washington Governor and Ambassador to China Gary Locke. During the discussion Bernanke covered a range of topics from the economic recovery to how he led the Federal Reserve through the Great Recession, of which the subject is the cornerstone of his book.

Ranked #3 on Fortune’s “World’s Greatest Leaders” list in 2014, Mulally was the keynote speaker of the Albers Executive Speaker Series.

Following the Albers’ evening talk, Mulally returned to campus for a full day of activities that included leading a workshop for Albers faculty/staff and SU top administrators around leadership.

Prestigious honor for law clinic educator and professor Bryan Adamson As the recipient of the 2016 William Pincus Award, Bryan Adamson says he appreciates being honored by those he highly respects.

“The clinical law community has always been a special sub-group of law professors, close knit and singularly interested in advancing the cause of legal education. And in doing so, they keep in mind all it means to be a practitioner as well as lawyering for social justice,” says Adamson, associate professor in the School of Law. The national award, the highest honor the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) bestows upon a clinical educator or institution, is named after the late William Pincus, a Ford Foundation executive who had the vision to create and expand legal services for the poor and clinical education for law students all in the name of improved access to justice.

With clinical legal education, clinical law professors teach and supervise second- and third-year law students while they engage in pro bono representation of clients.

“It’s very different to be here than at many other law schools,” says Adamson, now in his 14th year at Seattle U. “Social justice, economic justice and equality are not a fight at Seattle U, which is always forward-thinking with new ways of delivering that education and how to be of good to the surrounding community as well as the global community.”

Clinical law professors today aren’t just clinicians, he notes, they’re also scholars. Adamson wrote more than 15 law review articles or book chapters published since 2001.

When she nominated him for the Pincus Award, Lisa Brodoff, associate professor of law and director of the Ronald A. Peterson Law Clinic at Seattle U wrote, “In addition to his more traditional scholarship, Professor Adamson has been a leading advocacy voice in the academy for the most pressing legal issues of the day.”

Brodoff notes that when he directed the program from 2002-2006, Adamson oversaw the first big expansion of clinical education at SU, adding clinics in mediation, intellectual property and bankruptcy.

Adamson applied for and received a grant from the Washington state attorney general’s office to develop and teach what Brodoff describes as an innovative mortgage foreclosure practicum course where students counsel and represent homeowners.

In addition to the predatory lending clinic that he designed and implemented, Adamson also created a mass media law clinic and the community development and entrepreneurship clinic in collaboration with Albers to address strategy, accounting, product branding, business development and labor issues.

Unique executive leadership program for professionals Seattle University’s Executive Leadership Programs, housed at the Albers School of Business and Economics, are unique in the country. In fact, the nationally recognized EMBA program has been ranked for six years among the Top 25 Executive MBA programs nationwide and # 1 in the Northwest, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Led by Marilyn Gist, associate dean of executive programs at the Center for Leadership Formation and a professor of management at the business school, the Executive Leadership Program and Leadership Executive MBA offerings help mid-career professionals, most of whom have considerable management experience. They can earn a certificate in the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) with an option to continue on to earn an Executive MBA. The partnership between the Center for

Leadership Formation and the business world is evident with referrals to the program coming from area companies including Delta Dental, Expeditors, Boeing and Costco. “Most of our students have a work history that exemplifies a track record of achievement,” says Gist, “and enter our programs to gain knowledge and leadership competence to make a significant impact.”

Attaining advanced leadership skills allows students to grow personally and to make a real difference in their organizations. And the attributes of the program are attracting students at a record pace. Enrollment is on the rise with some 500 students and alumni in the region.

“Our efforts at enhancing the leadership quality in the region benefit businesses and the community at large,” says Gist.

Reforming the Justice System A collaboration between Seattle University’s Criminal Justice Department and U.S Probation and Pretrial Services was highlighted recently in a presentation at the Western Society of Criminology conference in Vancouver, B.C. Led by Associate Professor Elaine Gunnison, the focus was on program evaluation and reform of the justice system after arrest.

Criminal Justice graduate students Caitlin Healing and Raymond Cowles serve as research

assistants with U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Offices, Western District of Washington.

They collaborate with SU Criminal Justice Chair Jacqueline Helfgott and Gunnison to inform criminal justice practice for those under federal supervision in pretrial, probation and post-conviction.

U.S. Probation Chief Connie Smith, ’88 BCJ and ’09 OSR, developed this particular

research initiative.

“Hiring two research assistants from Seattle University is much more than helping students begin a career,” says Smith. “Our research assistants bring a fresh perspective to corrections.

Their intellect, skills, character and belief in changing lives complements our organizational goals and helps us understand our work through a new lens.”

ATHLETICS

CHAMPIONS ARE MADE HERE

It was a stellar year for Seattle U Division I athletics, highlighted by the success of the men’s and women’s soccer programs coached by Pete Fewing and Julie Woodward. The men’s team won its second WAC title in three years and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in the school’s D-I history. Coming into the NCAA third-round game against Syracuse, SU was tied with Creighton for most overall wins in 2015 as well as ranking #2 in goals and #10 in points nationally. The women’s team earned its third straight regular season conference championship and a #1 seed as they headed into the WAC title game for the third consecutive year. Members from both squads earned Scholar All-West Region awards while the men’s team earned its first two Division I All-Americans from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

For the first time in its history, men’s soccer advanced to the Sweet 16 in championship play. The team also earned its second WAC title in three years.

Women’s and men’s basketball are looking for another strong showing—and finish—in Division I play this season.

Dan Wall doesn’t rest on his success When he was 18, Dan Wall wanted to drive truck like his dad.

Trouble is, he was too young to obtain a license to get behind the wheel of a big rig and drive it across state lines.

With his dad a trucker and his mom a waitress, Wall says there was no talk about college—but they did want him to get passing grades at Kentwood High School in Covington, southeast of Seattle.

“I was a C student,” he says.

So he found himself a job as a messenger for Expeditors International of Washington. At the time, the company had roughly 500 employees. Today, Expeditors is a major player in global trade with 15,300 employees and 187 offices worldwide.

Wall is telling this story from his spacious corner office with its view of Puget Sound on the top floor of the downtown Seattle high-rise that is Expeditors’ home base. This Fortune 500 company that Wall describes as “a travel agent for freight” continues to do right by him.

It’s 28 years since Wall started at Expeditors. He is now president of global products and part of the senior leadership team of 22 executives.

When he started as a messenger, Wall hustled and drew attention for his smart ideas. Soon, he was promoted to office work, which meant buying suits and figuring out how to tie a tie. By 23, he was already a district manager.

Expeditors’ performance incentives to grow its workforce from within turned out to be a good match for Wall, who came to Seattle University and completed an Executive Leadership Certificate in 2004, followed by a Leadership Executive MBA in 2008.

“Expeditors took a chance on me, pushed me and encouraged me to go to school,” he says.

His LEMBA capstone project gave him a challenge to integrate what he learned and benefit Expeditors and its communities by solving real-world problems.

Inspired by his own experience, Wall created Opportunity Knocks. The program, launched at Expeditors in 2008, offers six months of professional training to youth who don’t have the motivation or means to pursue higher education.

Today, numerous organizations around the nation take part in Opportunity Knocks at 26 of Expeditors’ offices. Wall credits the Cristo Rey Network with playing a sizable role in screening youth.

The program caught the eye of community leaders as well as the Obama administration. In 2013, Wall took part in the “White House Youth Jobs + Champions for Change” event where he and colleagues shared the successes of Opportunity Knocks and heard President Obama speak.

SEATTLE U A TOP CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY CARE FOR THE EARTH & THE POOR FOCUS OF CATHOLIC HERITAGE LECTURES Noted scientist and theologian Ilia Delio, O.S.F., was the first speaker of the 2015-16 Catholic Heritage Lecture series, sponsored by the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture in collaboration with the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability. The focus of this year’s lectures is, “Care for the Earth, Care for the Poor,” which is inspired by Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’.

Of more than 200 Roman Catholic colleges and universities in the nation, Seattle University ranks in the Top 15 for its four-year undergraduate programs, according to College Factual. This datadriven resource assists prospective college students and focuses on outcomes such as loan default rates, graduation rates and average salaries of graduates.

Olivia Smith,’16, is the newest Truman Scholar from Seattle U Olivia Smith, ’16, remembers the moment she learned she was a 2015 Truman Scholar. It was particularly memorable not only because of who broke the news to her—President Stephen Sundborg, S.J., at a Sullivan Leadership meeting— but also because it meant she was the 15th Truman from Seattle University.

“When he made the announcement, I immediately began to cry because I was excited, relieved, in disbelief and thankful,” Smith says. “As they read the official announcement, I bowed my head, closed my eyes and gave glory to God because I am blessed, truly blessed, to have received such an opportunity.”

Smith, a Sullivan Scholar and political science/Spanish major, joins an impressive group of Trumans from the university, which has been named among the most elite schools in the country for the number of Truman Scholars it has produced.

The prestigious academic award, from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, is given to undergraduates who

are preparing for careers in public service. Smith is the only Washington college student to receive the award in 2015.

As a Truman Scholar, Smith will receive a $30,000 scholarship toward graduate school and the opportunity to participate in professional development programs to prepare for a career in public service leadership. For Smith, the scholarship will help her toward achieving her goal of attending law school at New York University.

Ultimately, she wants to return to her roots—she is a graduate of Seattle’s Cleveland High School—to work as a state prosecutor.

“I am interested in creating a new mode of thinking for state prosecutors, one that is restorative instead of punitive,” she says.

For Smith, being a Truman Scholar “means there are people who truly believe in my capacity to live for and with others and change the world. I do not hold that responsibility lightly.”
