I know I've been speaking alot about mental health lately, but I guess when something I've experienced is relevant enough to share, I sometimes look to Seaside to express in words what others may find difficult to discuss. This time, it's about kindness.

Every now and then, life gives us a gentle (or sometimes not-so-gentle) reminder of how important kindness is. Recently, I found myself in a situation where a neighbourhood project I was working on took an unexpected turn. Instead of sharing ideas and concerns directly, decisions were made without me, and the flow of collaboration was lost. It wasn’t the end of the world, but it did leave me feeling a little sad. It made me stop and think about how much of our daily life depends on how we choose to treat one another.

A conversation held with respect can strengthen trust, while one handled poorly can leave a lasting bruise. We may not always agree, but there is always a way to approach differences that leaves everyone feeling heard.

What could have been done differently? It’s simple really – communicate openly, listen with patience, and approach others with empathy. Even when there’s a challenge to address, kindness allows us to face it together instead of apart. We live in a time when our communities need connection more than ever. Small acts – a thoughtful word, a moment of listening, a willingness to talk things through – can be more powerful than we realize. So, before speaking or acting, I try to ask myself: “Will this make someone feel valued?” If the answer is yes, then it’s a choice worth making. Because at the end of the day, kindness doesn’t just change someone else’s day – it changes ours too.

PIEROGI PIZZA WORDS TABATHA GOLAT I grew up in my family’s pizza shop, spending summers and after-school hours making pizzas. We were always experimenting with different toppings and flavour combinations, so creating new recipes still feels second nature.

This pierogi pizza is one of my more recent favourites, bringing together all the comfort of a traditional pierogi with the fun and ease of pizza.

This is my go-to recipe when I want something hearty and impressive without a lot of effort. The dough is a quick-rise version that is ready in just 15 minutes, and the toppings are inspired by

classic pierogi flavours. I love grabbing fresh ingredients from the farmers market and making it the same day, but it works perfectly any time of year. It is vegetarian-friendly but can easily include bacon if you like, and skips the tomato sauce for those that aren’t fans.

Whether it is friends gathered for game night, a family dinner or a cozy night in, this pizza always delivers. It is quick, satisfying, and consistently gets compliments the moment it comes out of the oven. This pizza is proof that a recipe can be simple, comforting, and a little bit show-stopping all at once.

PIEROGI PIZZA (makes one large pizza)

No-Rise Pizza Dough 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tbsp white sugar 2 ¼ tsp (or one package) instant rise yeast 1 tsp salt 1 cup warm water (110°F) 2 tbsp vegetable oil Toppings 1 - 2 cups grated pizza mozzarella (to your taste) ½ - 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 2 tbsp sour cream (plus extra for topping each slice) 10 | SEPTEMBER 2025 | Seaside

1 tbsp mayonnaise 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 8 small potatoes (any kind) olive oil salt and pepper green onions, finely sliced optional: cooked bacon crumbles for topping after baking optional: chili flakes, oregano, or other herbs of your choice

AHI TUNA PIZZA WORDS MITCHELL OGILVIE I’ve loved cooking for as long as I can remember, but my favourite meals are the ones that bring people together.

Homemade pizza has that magic. There’s nothing quite like everyone gathered in the backyard on a warm summer evening, drinks in hand and the irresistible aroma of pizza roasting away. There was just one challenge: my partner can’t stand tomatoes or tomato sauce. That meant pizza night required a little creativity. Over time, it became a running experiment to craft a pie she’d love just as much as I do.

Starting with an alternative to tomato sauce, we wanted

to try something other than a classic cream sauce of simple olive oil. Using an aji verde brings some spice and freshness and toasts up really nice on a classic pizza dough.

For richness, we swapped cheese for thin sliced avocado with a hint of sesame oil, creating the perfect base for fresh-seared ahi tuna to shine.

A handful of crisp greens and a drizzle of spicy mayo finished it off.

The result? A bright, fresh and deeply satisfying pizza that not only won over the resident tomato skeptic but quickly became a family favourite.

AHI TUNA PIZZA WITH AJI VERDE (serves 4)

For the Aji Verde Sauce 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves 2 green chilies or jalapeños, seeds removed for less heat 1 clove garlic 2 tbsp fresh lime juice 2 tbsp olive oil ¼ cup mayonnaise salt, to taste For the Pizza 1 ball fresh pizza dough (about 12-14 inches) 1 ripe avocado 1 tsp sesame oil

200 g (7 oz) fresh ahi tuna steak 1 cup mixed fresh greens (arugula, pea shoots or similar) 2 tbsp spicy mayonnaise sesame oil, for brushing sesame seeds to garnish (bonus points for black sesame seeds)

There’s something special about sunny afternoons in late summer – especially when they’re spent discovering a new place that feels both playful and peaceful.

On our first family visit to Country Bee Honey Farm, we found the perfect mix of nature, family fun and sweet local charm.

Our whole crew wandered the farm’s paths, starting with a warm hello from the goats and birds. The animals are either rescued or were born on the farm, and many are happy to be hand-fed, especially by wideeyed little ones holding small handfuls of grain. It’s hard not to smile when a curious goat nudges your palm.

From there, we strolled through blooming flower beds buzzing with bees and followed the short path through the wildflower field to the honeybee hives. One of our highlights was holding the fluffy baby chicks.

After our walk, we headed into the farm shop, where shelves were stocked with thoughtful gifts, honeyinfused treats and beethemed home décor. We sampled the local honey, bought some honey treats, and enjoyed a cold drink.

Country Bee is a working farm, education centre and shop all in one, making it an easy choice for an outing that supports all things local.

Whether you’re looking to entertain guests, spend time outside with kids, or try something new for an hour, it’s

a sweet spot – literally.

Once we got home, my mom would be enveloped in steam for days as she put up dozens of jars of fruit for enjoying later in the year. Homecanned jars of peaches and pears were always a welcome treat throughout the rainy days of winter.

The pears should be sweet, have tender flesh, and still keep their shape when cooked. Another important characteristic is the ripeness of the pear, as unripe pears can be too firm and tart, while overripe pears can be too soft and mushy.

Pears have always been one of my favourite fruits. When I was a kid, my family would travel up to the Okanagan each summer to camp at the lake, and on the way back we would always stop at the roadside stands to pick up cases of peaches, pears and apricots.

I still do home canning, but sometimes it’s such a pleasure to take the glorious end-of-summer bounty, like my favourite, the pear, and transform it into something that’s beautiful to look at yet also so darn tasty. I have found that a long, narrow tart provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the curvy shape of pears, while the nutty pastry and a smooth, very tasty filling brings all of the flavours together so wonderfully.

What I love about this recipe is that the crust isn’t rolled out: you press the dough into the tart pan. You should try to ensure that the pastry is as even as you can get it, but you don’t need to roll it out then transfer it to the pan.

And, if you want to add even more flavour to the filling, try a local infused honey. Maybe lavender? Fireweed? Use whatever strikes your fancy.

But the pears are really the stars of this show, as their subtle sweetness, along with the hazelnuts, work together to create a dessert that’s a perfect showcase for the bounty and beauty of the season.

Crust: ½ cup chopped hazelnuts ½ cup unsalted butter at room temperature (and extra for coating the pan) ¼ cup firmly packed light brown sugar 3 tbsp liquid honey 1 cup all purpose flour ½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp almond extract ½ tsp vanilla extract

Pulse the nuts in a food processor until they are mostly finely textured. It’s OK if some pieces are a little bit coarse.

In a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, or in a bowl with a hand mixer, mix together butter with sugar and honey.

Filling: ½ cup mascarpone 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 tbsp honey 1 ¼ tsp vanilla ½ tsp almond extract 1 tbsp sifted flour 2 tsp hazelnut flour (or very finely chopped hazelnuts) 3-4 ripe but still firm pears, peeled, cored, thinly sliced.

Recommended: Bosc, Anjou or Bartlett ¼ cup hazelnuts, toasted and chopped for garnish icing sugar for dusting/garnish

Add ground hazelnuts and remaining ingredients. Mix until combined. You will end up with a soft, pliable dough that resembles a cookie mixture.

Lightly brush with butter a rectangular fluted tart pan (13 ½ x 4 ¾ inch) or nine-inch round tart pan (either should have a removeable bottom).

Put dough in the pan and evenly press it into the pan, making sure you press it into the corners and seal up any cracks. Prick dough all over with a fork. Refrigerate for 30-40 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°. Place the pan on a baking sheet and cook until the crust is golden brown, 15 minutes.

Take the pan off the baking sheet and transfer to a wire rack. Cool completely before adding filling.

In a bowl, whisk together mascarpone, egg, honey, almond, vanilla. Add the sifted flour and hazelnut flour; whisk until fully incorporated into mixture. When filling is a smooth consistency, pour it into the cooled crust, smooth out evenly; arrange pear slices as preferred on top of filling. Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350°; you want the filling set, and fruit softened. Put baked tart on cooling rack.

Cool slightly before carefully removing from the pan.

Before serving, garnish with chopped toasted hazelnuts and dust with icing sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.

SEASIDE LIVING Inside Out Did you know your mouth is home to billions of bacteria that may be influencing your heart, brain and immune system? It’s true, and during my last dental check-up, I was reminded just how much oral health matters.

The hygienist greeted me with the usual cheerful option: “Let’s get started with some mouthwash. Today’s flavours are mint, raspberry or bubble gum. Which one would you like?” I replied with a smile: “No thanks; we’ve had this conversation before.” He laughed. “Ah yes, the oral microbiome. Now I remember!”

This playful exchange happens every visit, but it’s based on something serious: your oral microbiome, a community of microorganisms that’s vital to more than just your teeth.

SEASIDE FLAVOUR Off the Vine

Piemonte Uncorked "There didn't used to be grapes here," the owner of the hotel tells me, gesturing across the Langhe Hills – a statement that seems impossible given the endless carpet of vineyards stretching to the horizon.

But at Ca dei Currà, a small pension in this UNESCO World Heritage Site in northwestern Italy, Paolo's words hint at a deeper truth about this ancient wine region: that what we see today as timeless tradition is actually the result of recent transformation, where centuries-old grape varieties have found new life through modern winemaking. I’d come to Piedmont (the locals call it Piemonte) to get a deeper understanding of Italian wine, which remains a fantastic value for money in British Columbia.

This region lies nestled between France to the west and Switzerland to the north, where snowmelt from the Alps feeds the Po River – the lifeblood of this agricultural region. The region's geography creates both opportunity and challenge: while the alpine waters have nurtured grape 26 | SEPTEMBER 2025 | Seaside

growing for centuries, climate change now threatens this delicate balance, as seen in 2022's crippling drought that left the Po running dry.

Yet as catastrophic as that event was, the wine industry persevered, illustrating that grapes must struggle as they grow to yield the highestquality juice critical to worldclass wine production. In the Langhe, all grapes are grown on hill slopes, with the best plots at the top (for drainage) facing south or southwest (following the sun). At Ca dei Currà, every late afternoon a cool breeze blows south from the sea, cooling the grapes and preventing them from overripening.

Made from the ancient Nebbiolo grape grown here for over 700 years, Barolo rivals Bordeaux in terms of expression, aging and return on investment. Some of the top Barolo wines sell for over €600

a bottle, and certain brands have increased by 100% over five years, making them highly desirable investments. Yet at the local enoteca (wine shop), producers sell their products directly to the public, cutting out the middleman – a bottle can be found for as little as €10. Barolo is a complex, dry red wine aged in oak barrels for several years to develop its distinctive character.

Later, I visit Bruno Giacosa, a small winery in the village of Neive named after the eponymous winemaker who sadly died in 2018. Giacosa was a perfectionist who only produced vintages that he considered truly worthy. As a result, some years he didn't make any wine at all, creating scarcity and demand that commands high prices. Today, Bruno Giacosa's wines are famous throughout the world for their quality. In B.C. you can only buy the wine either

through private wine clubs or at The Vancouver Club or Elisa.

Ending my short trip in the Langhe, I try the latest release of Arneis with Bruno Giacosa's Head of Marketing, Paola. In the 1970s, Giacosa and the nearby winery Vietti revived the Arneis ("little rascal" in Italian) grape, which had fallen out of fashion. It's a white wine with great minerality and hints of pear, almond and apricot. Sipping this crisp white as the afternoon light plays across the vineyard rows, I finally understand Paolo's paradox: while grapes have grown in these hills for centuries, what makes this region special today is how traditional varieties like Nebbiolo and rescued grapes like Arneis continue to find new expression through passionate winemakers who honour both heritage and innovation.

Vietti Roero Arneis 2022: I first came across this one at this year's Vancouver Wine Festival, and it made me want to jump on the first plane to Italy. It's crisp and high in minerality with a touch of sweetness.

Served straight out of the fridge, it's both refreshing and has high minerality.

Great with seafood.

Reverdito 2016 Barolo: Barolo is quite expensive in B.C.; however, Reverdito (one of the leading producers in Langhe) has produced this deep red wine with hints of orange peel and rose. A great accompaniment to steak or pasta.

G.D Vajra, Langhe, Nebbiolo 2023: In recent years, producers have started to produce Nebbiolo almost as a budget Barolo wine.

This is a great value introduction to the region, produced by one of the great winemakers in the region. Aged in stainless steel to preserve the flavour of the grapes, this has strong hints of cherries and fresh strawberries.

Brachetto d'Acqui 2018: This one can be a bit harder to find. Brachetto is a light red wine with a touch of "frizzante," meaning a light fizz but not quite sparkling. It's low alcohol with a touch of sweetness and notes of red berries. Perfect for desserts. www.cadeicurra.com

“Open Secret Livrary” reads the sign in my five-year-old daughter’s crayoned prose.

Earlier in the day while I washed dishes, she had me call out the letters so she could carefully craft her sign. It’s now taped to the side of a cushion from her play couch which she has standing on its side next to a few other large cushions to create an enclosed fort in the middle of our living room.

Another sign with several tape pieces holding it up on the entrance to the fort says “Secret library closed.”

“Oh, is the library actually closed?” I ask her while perched on my hands and knees, half-way through the entrance to her library. “No, YOU can come in, Mama, but NO DOGS ALLOWED!” she shouts, pointing at our puppy who is pushing his nose in beside me, eager to also experience the wonder of the secret library. Inside, she’s placed her library books all around the walls of the fort and hung blankets to create a canopy over one corner for a reading nook. Stuffies and other random toys adorn the floor and my wicker laundry basket is upside down, transformed into an important wall of the fort. Her younger sister is napping but I know as soon as she wakes up she’ll try to enter the secret library and will also most likely be told off, just as the puppy was.

She continues to take me on a tour of her library, explaining her decisions around which books she chose to include and why, which ones could

be checked out and which ones had to stay, what areas were for reading and how long exactly I was permitted to visit. She had an entire narrative formed around this secret library, as if she’d been thinking about it for days. She begged for it to stay standing overnight and not be cleaned up as we usually do at the end of the day.

Fort building and other such forms of imaginative play have become an important part of my kids’ daily rhythms in our household. At five and two years old, their brains are continuing to develop and pretend play is a great way for them to learn critical thinking, how to navigate relationships and foster cooperation (such as allowing little sister to also enter the secret library!). I love seeing what their imaginations produce, their innovation and discovery of the world around them. So often their favourite “toys” continue to be the most simple of household items: couch cushions becoming a train, a cardboard box transforming into a ferry, a stick converting to a fishing rod. In 2008, the stick was actually added to the National Toy Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

we often lose that creative mindset. It can be challenging to access that part of our brains when our days are filled with appointments, worries, long to-do lists and a gazillion household tasks that can often feel far more pressing than taking time to stop and allow ourselves to enter our children’s madeup world of play. Embracing that imaginative state and experiencing an alternate reality inside your own living

room can be a refreshing break from the daily grind.

I’ve found it takes a bit of practice, and I don’t always enjoy it at first, especially if my child is barking orders and rules for how to exist in said imaginative world. However, inviting play into my life again in a less structured way has allowed me to see the world from my kids’ view and if that means an on hands and knees, invite-only entry to a Secret Livrary, I’m here for it.

I had a very vivid imagination as a child and, when left to my own devices, I too remember creating forts and massive set-ups with my toys, inventing characters and even an imaginary horse that I looked after daily and “rode” in my backyard. As an adult,

HONEY GLAZED SHRIMP HONEY MARINADE

55 g (¼ cup) brown sugar 80 mL (1/3 cup) teriyaki sauce 60 mL (¼ cup) pineapple juice 30 mL (2 tbsp) honey 2 garlic cloves, minced 5 mL (1 tsp) Dijon mustard 15 mL (1 tbsp) sesame oil 15 mL (1 tbsp) olive oil Red pepper flakes, to taste 20 large shrimp, uncooked, tails removed and deveined Cooked rice and/or veggies of your choice, for serving

Prepare the honey glaze: In a medium bowl, mix all the ingredients for the marinade. Put the shrimp into a airtight container, like a glass container with a lid or a sealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the shrimp. Seal the container and refrigerate for a least 1 hour or up to 6 hours.

Remove the shrimp from the refrigerator and pour everything into a large saucepan. Sauté the shrimp over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes. Turn each shrimp over and cook for another 2 minutes, or until shrimp is cooked thoroughly. Remove the shrimp from the pan and place on a plate. Continue to simmer the marinade until it thickens slightly, then remove it from the heat. Pour the marinade over the shrimp, and any rice or veggies you’re serving it with. Makes 4 servings.

Plotting Towards Productivity A good story is a lot like a good farm: they both need a great plot. While a story’s plot relies on action, characters and ideas, a farm’s success depends on the approach, effort and dedication of its farmers to their plot ... of land.

WORDS JO BARNES PHOTOS SARAH HARTLEY PHOTOGRAPHY Tyler Browne and Emily Harris own The Plot Market Garden in Saanich, and their story is one of a shared passion for farming and the pursuit of sustainability and community resilience. “The Plot Market Garden is a smallscale farm with a big mission,” relates Tyler. “We believe that food grown on Vancouver Island should be available on local grocery stores shelves – reducing reliance on imported produce, lowering emissions and supporting community health.

Emily adds: “Our farm name comes from the market garden style of farming we do, which is based on the practices of Jean Michael Fortier. It also refers to the land where we farm. Our house is up higher on the property with our farm plot down below.”

A flourishing Saanich farm, The Plot Market Garden grows a variety of top-quality salad greens and root vegetables and markets direct to consumer, to grocery stores and local restaurants. “We are known for our greens, which include mustard mix, spring mix, arugula and baby kale. We also grow cherry tomatoes, large slicing tomatoes, carrots, beets and turnips,” outlines Emily.

“We have a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) box program delivered through the South Island Farm Hub and we sell to restaurants such as Nourish, Charlotte & The Quail, House of Boateng, Laurel Point Inn, and Artisan Bistro.”

The farming duo, who met in England, share a passion for regenerative agriculture. In 2018, they moved to Canada to apply

their experiences and training to a new farming venture. “Tyler got his business management degree from the University of Brighton, and I completed my permaculture certificate from the Brighton Permaculture Trust. My family had five acres on West Saanich Road where we are now,” says Emily, adding: “We started really small with a quarter acre just to see if we could grow produce.”

With hard work and dedication, that initial intention sprouted success. Over time, the farm operation expanded to two acres operating on two sites, off West Saanich Road and Oldfield Road, together generating a high yield of quality produce. The star in their produce lineup is salad greens, which Tyler and Emily discovered early was popular.

“There is a huge demand for local greens. We slipped into this niche,” shares Emily. “There wasn’t a local supplier of greens in grocery stores. So, we started at the local West Saanich Red Barn Market then expanded to all of their stores. In addition, we now also sell to Urban Grocer and Old Farm Market.”

“Nowadays, we harvest 300 to 400 pounds of spring mix each week,” adds Tyler. “Our top seller is the spring mix, which has four different lettuce types in it. The restaurants really like the Mesclun mix which is the mustard greens.

It has a lot of flavour.”

Regenerative agricultural practices are followed including using no chemical sprays, low till techniques and the use of organic compost and fertilizer.

Produce is grown in 30-inchwide permanent growing beds which offer ergonomic benefits.

They are easy to reach down into, step over and straddle, minimizing the physical strain on the body. Produce freshness and flavour hinge on timely

harvest and preparation.

“Produce that comes in from abroad typically arrives seven days after harvest and doesn’t keep well,” comments Emily.

“Our greens are harvested days before going onto to the shelf.

They look brighter and will last two to three weeks.”

The produce has definitely been garnering attention. Customers repeatedly comment about greens that are “consistently fresh”, “amazing” or “the best.”

This positive feedback provides ongoing motivation to reach even higher farming goals. “We’d love to supply more grocery stores and restaurants across the Island, while staying true to our values of regenerative agriculture and community resilience,” comments Tyler. Emily echoes the sentiment: “We’d like to be the number one supplier of salad greens on southern Vancouver Island.”

For these enthusiasts, farming brings purpose and fulfillment.

“I got into farming because of a passion for growing plants and it gave me a strong sense of purpose,” shares Tyler. “I saw a need for more young farmers, especially in the face of climate change."

Emily has been working with Sandown Centre for Regenerative Agriculture, now serving as Executive Director and also heading up a new initiative growing food for local school meal programs. In 2021, the couple were recognized for their stewardship of the land, with a Saanich Environmental Award in The Business Category.

Balcony BLISS

I’ve never understood why so many balconies are left barren and ignored.

To me, they are the perfect way to soften the harsh lines of tall buildings and bring gardens right to our doorstep.

WORDS & PHOTOS CYNTHIA PHILP Recently, I had the pleasure of touring a friend’s amazing balcony. Laila has embraced her outdoor space, creating a functional yet utterly lovely spot to enjoy with friends and family. In a space that measures about 11 by seven feet, she has plenty of room for cooking, entertaining and gardening.

A previous owner had overlaid the surface of the balcony with teak tiles, and Laila added an outdoor carpet to make the space an extension of her stylish kitchen. An amazing hostess, she loves to cook and searched out a balconysized barbecue with folding side shelves for food prep. She added a heatproof drip mat, to keep the surface of her balcony space clean and safe.

The area also offers ample gardening space; Laila cannot be without her fresh herbs.

After diligently checking the

weight restrictions for her balcony (always check condo rules), she found Canadianmade pots (Algreen) that are environmentally conscious, lightweight, and self-watering, with an elevated internal plant liner to minimize weight. Even better, the pots are on wheels, allowing them to easily be moved out of the way if the need arises.

She grows chives (to add to egg dishes), rosemary, cilantro (for salsas) and thyme. A separate container is reserved for mint, from which she can prepare her special mint sauce. Cherry tomato plants (Super Sweet 100) complete her vegetable garden. “We love them – they don’t last long when they start to ripen,” says Laila.

Of course, adding flowers punches up the already magnificent view. All the plants in her garden are annuals; easy to put in each spring, they

provide a show all summer.

Tidied up for winter, the garden stays neat with no maintenance requirements.

In addition to having space for cooking and gardening, her balcony offers seating versatile enough to enjoy either a solitary cup of coffee in the morning, or a shared meal with friends in the evening. After doing her research, Laila settled on a eucalyptus folding table that can withstand our sunny summers and rainy winters.

The is one of the most amazing pieces of balcony furniture I’ve ever seen: four can sit comfortably when the table is fully extended to a 42-inch diameter, but with both leaves dropped, the profile of the table only takes up a mere eight inches(!) of deck space.

Pocket Symphonies October 7

Pocket Symphonies brings together four remarkable musicians in a performance that reimagines the scale and splendor of orchestral masterpieces through the lens of chamber music. Featuring the acclaimed Bergmann Piano Duo, violinist Jasper Wood, and cellist Sungyong Lim, this concert offers a fresh, intimate experience of some of classical music’s most beloved works.

The concept of Pocket Symphonies is as innovative as it is charming—grand orchestra works distilled into compelling chamber arrangements that maintain their emotional intensity while offering new clarity.

The centrepiece of the program will be a "pocket version" of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, performed on one piano (four hands) by the Bergmann Duo, with Wood on violin and Lim on cello. This streamlined ensemble preserves the drama and driving energy of the original score while revealing new textures and details not often heard in full orchestral settings.

The program also includes Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, selections from Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, and the fiery Duo for Violin and Cello by Zoltán Kodály. Each work is carefully curated to highlight the dynamic interplay between strings and piano, showcasing the expressive range of the performers.

Pocket Symphonies offers a compelling model for how classical music can be both innovative and accessible. By presenting iconic works in smaller-scale arrangements, the concert allowed audiences to experience orchestral music in a more personal, immediate way—without losing the grandeur or emotional weight of the originals. Hidden Dangers That Could Harm Your Pet WORDS JACQUELINE NICOLL K & CO. MARKETING

We like to think of our homes and neighbourhoods as safe havens for our four-legged companions, but the truth is, the world is full of tiny landmines that can cause outsized harm. From the smoldering stub of a cigarette tossed on the sidewalk to the innocent-looking houseplant on your windowsill, danger for pets often comes in forms we hardly notice. The irony is that while we diligently keep chocolate out of reach, it’s the overlooked items, often hiding in plain sight, that pose some of the biggest threats.

The obvious (but still everywhere) menace starts with cigarette and joint butts.

To humans, they’re just litter.

To a curious dog or cat, they’re an intriguing snack-sized object. Nicotine is a fastacting toxin, and even a single discarded butt can lead to vomiting, seizures or worse in pets. The same goes for marijuana leftovers. Marijuana exposure in pets isn’t a joke, it’s a medical emergency. Dogs in particular are vulnerable to THC toxicity, which can cause

lethargy, disorientation, and in severe cases, tremors or coma.

The problem isn’t limited to city sidewalks either: party aftermaths in backyards and parks leave a smorgasbord of hazards for pets with better noses than judgment. The best defense is vigilance: keep walks on a short leash, scan the ground before your pet does, and if you suspect they’ve ingested something toxic, call your vet or an emergency clinic immediately.

Plants add another layer of risk. Lilies are notorious for being lethal to cats, while azaleas, tulips, and even seemingly harmless pothos plants can cause gastrointestinal upset or worse. The trouble is, greenery looks the same to our pets, whether it’s safe or not. Dogs chew when they’re bored, cats nibble when they’re curious, and neither consults a gardening guide before snacking. Pet owners often learn the hard way that their decorative centrepiece doubles as a veterinary emergency waiting

to happen. A good rule of thumb? If you can’t identify a plant, assume it’s unsafe until proven otherwise.

Then there are the stealth offenders in cabinets and garages: household chemicals.

Cleaning solutions, fertilizers, and especially antifreeze can be catastrophic for curious pets. Antifreeze is both sweet tasting and deadly, and even a small spill left in a driveway can kill a neighbour’s cat. Even so-called “green” cleaners aren’t necessarily safe, as they can still upset a pet’s digestive system. Pets don’t read warning labels, so it only takes a single lick to land them in the ER. Keeping these substances locked away or cleaned up quickly isn’t just smart, it’s lifesaving.

In the end, the dangers pets face aren’t exotic – they’re hiding in the everyday clutter of our lives. What seems trivial to us can be toxic to them, and prevention usually comes down to a bit of vigilance.

Toss cigarette butts in proper bins, swap out risky plants for pet-safe varieties, and store

chemicals like you live with a determined toddler. Our pets trust us to create a safe environment, even when their instincts lead them straight into trouble. Protecting them isn’t about paranoia – it’s about recognizing the world through their eyes and keeping temptation firmly out of paw’s reach.

The Raptors I love, love, love being a tourist on our beautiful Island and even after eight years as a resident here there is still so much to discover!

WORDS & PHOTOS STEPHANIE STAPLES So after driving by “The Raptors” entrance sign in Duncan time and time again and hearing rave reviews about the place, I was delighted to finally make the time to see what it was all about. The Raptors, if you aren’t already in the know, is a conservation/ educational facility dedicated to increasing awareness, appreciation (and maybe even love) for birds of prey.

We weren’t quite sure what to expect when my daughter and I choose “The Closest” experience of the numerous options available. Her husband chose the general admission for himself and their two-year-old. All of us were happy with our choices.

The general admission – coming in at a very fair price of $25 – allows you to wander around the sanctuary all day and attend the various

flying demonstrations, which are an absolute must. The knowledgeable handlers both entertain and educate while the birds show off their prowess, flying inches over your head. “If you feel like you should duck, then duck,” she advised us. It’s just amazing to see these incredible birds swoop down from the trees in such close proximity to humans; we’d never seen anything like it before. Taro and little Arlo easily busied themselves around the facility for 75-ish minutes while Kara and I took in our experience.

The Closest experience allowed us to be in a private group of six. [As a sidenote, I’ll add that the other four participants were apologetic Americans seriously considering moving to the Island and were very appreciative of how welcome we islanders made them feel.]

In addition to the private learning experience, we were all given the opportunity to hold three different birds. A sweet little kestrel, weighing as much as four TimBits (how’s that for a Canadian perspective!), an owl and a hawk. The hawk came swooping in from the trees, landing gracefully on our arms to receive his treat.

Personally, being able to look a great horned owl right in his gorgeous glassy eyes, feeling the strength in his powerful claws clutching my arm and having him just inches from my face felt like such a privilege, it brought a tear to my eye.

Kara appreciated this unique opportunity to learn about and see the intricacies and specialized features of these animals in a way you would never otherwise be able to experience them and her hubby, Taro – with a toddler in tow – appreciated how easily accessible the facility was.

The school-age children that we saw there seemed to be having an absolute blast.

Associated with The Raptors is the Raptor Rescue Society – these are the folks you call when you need a rescue for an injured raptor and, more surprisingly to me, they bring

their raptors and trained professionals to places such as airports, industrial settings and even your own backyard to control wildlife in a holistic way. Wow! Who doesn’t love choices, so before you take this easy day trip from the Peninsula, check out their site (www.theraptors.com) to choose what kind of visit you would like to have – general admission, The Closer Experience, The Closest Experience, Raptor Day or Eagle Encounter.

Reservations are highly recommended for the latter two experiences. They also have camps, courses and some special seasonal activities such as Medieval Knights. You can also arrange for corporate events and, wait for it ... weddings! If you fall deep into this type of birding, you can even sign up for Falconry Courses.

For us, The Raptors met its goal to “educate, illuminate and inspire a sense of personal responsibility for the future of both birds of prey and the planet.”

So no matter the season, considering being a tourist on our Island, pack a picnic, leave your dog at home and go experience the rapture of The Raptors!

As a non-profit, charitable enterprise, Shoreline, from its inception, has worked to provide a new (and innovative!) model of primary care for everyone on the Saanich Peninsula, while also providing much-needed support of in-patient care at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital – my favourite hospital!

I believe in Shoreline’s vision, so much so that I moved my practice to Shoreline and worked there for two years. Then when I retired from the practice, Shoreline found physicians to take over my patient panel, providing that all-important continuity of care. I often run into my former patients, who tell me how happy they are with the clinic and care provided.

I have also expressed my support for Shoreline by continuing to provide care as a locum physician. I am very proud to work alongside the doctors, nurse practitioners, allied health team members and all of the staff at Shoreline. I see how hard they are working to care for patients, while working hard to recruit more caregivers and build a team-based model of care, expanding care for our community.

Life Redesign after

Brain Injury & Stroke

The Saanich Peninsula is now home to CONNECT Communities, a specialized resource coaching people to redesign their lives after brain injury and stroke.

The building comprises four self-contained houses, each with six or seven bedrooms to support 26 people at a time. Common areas include a gym and multi-purpose room and lightfilled atrium.

by Accreditation Canada, CONNECT’s Life Redesign Model is a culture of: personal accountability with the individual as the driver of their redesign; smart risks; meaningful community participation; leveraging neuroplasticity in noninstitutional ways; a coaching culture; and blended job roles with a “doing with” versus “doing for” approach.

CONNECT’s dedication to its coaching culture is demonstrated by the team members’ titles. Nurses are Health and Wellness Coaches, Occupational Therapists are Independence Coaches, Recreation Therapists are Play Coaches, Support Workers are Life Redesign Coaches, etc.

Every coach walks alongside the people supported, essentially wrapping services around them and their unique journey.

CONNECT started with one group home in Langley in 1993. Several group homes were added over time, but

a game changer came 15 years later with the opening of CONNECT Lake Country in partnership with Interior Health. Next came CONNECT Hamiton, which opened in 2019 in Ontario in partnership with Hamilton Health Sciences. CONNECT Saanich Peninsula opened this summer in partnership with Island Health, and CONNECT Parksville – also in partnership with Island Health – is scheduled to open in late 2026.

The show was held from July 29 to August 3 and brings the top athletes from 12 to 25 years old from Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean to compete. It’s a large competition held over multiple days and includes both individual and team events.

Canada sent 12 dressage riders and it was an incredible achievement to have four young riders all from one barn qualify together.

The four horse and rider combinations consisted of Imogen Hawes (18) and her mount Knights Cavallo Dolce, or “Curly” as he’s known around the barn, a nine-year-old Friesian/Arabian cross; Alison Campbell-Wright (18) and her horse Slapstick or “Slappy”, an 11-year-old Hanoverian; Gwendolyn Joinson (14) and Blind Date AT or “Bentley,” an 11-year-old Westphalian; and Estella Gosniak (12) and her newer-to-her horse Impact or “Paco,” a Dutch Warmblood, former show jumping horse who is also 12-years-old. They all worked hard throughout the year, attending many off-Island dressage shows in order to achieve their qualifying scores and overcoming challenges as they went.

In October 2024, Gwendolyn had her third open heart surgery to treat complex congenital heart defects. The recovery time post surgery is 10 to 12 weeks, but she was soon begging her doctors to allow her back in the saddle to start training again, with her sights set on NAYC. Once cleared by her doctors, she started out carefully by riding one of the steady ponies at the barn before moving back onto her own, much taller horse. Over the next few months she trained every day and soon was back competing and achieving the qualifying scores she needed for NAYC. She achieved high placings and personal best scores at the show – a testament to her determination.

For Imogen, it was a dream come true to attend the championships: “I’ve dreamed of going since I was a little girl,” she says. “It was quite emotional for me,” she adds, citing the moment in the arena when she thought back to how she’d brought her horse along from the start through all his training to get to the upper levels. She had a very successful show, placing fourth in the team test, fifth in the individual test and seventh in the FEI Junior Freestyle.

Alison, who rode as an individual and as a part of the junior team with Imogen, is no stranger to the NAYC, this being her third time competing in the show. While it would have been her fourth time at the competition as she had qualified in 2024 as well, she unfortunately had a fall from another horse that year and fractured four vertebrae, missing the show as a result.

She spent three months rehabbing and continued to stay focused on getting strong enough to begin riding again. She came back more determined than ever and earned her qualifying scores for this year’s competition.

Estella, the youngest rider on the team, showed such grace, resilience and maturity beyond her years when dealt a difficult situation at the show. Although she and Paco had passed the mandatory jog, which is the initial veterinary inspection each horse and rider combo have to go through in order to be allowed to compete, during her second event Paco took a misstep during a movement and was eliminated, citing concerns over the horse’s soundness. Shortly after, Paco

was cleared by the veterinarian, but as stated by the rules, once eliminated she was no longer eligible to compete for the rest of the show. “Brittney really helped me and supported me through it,” reflects Estella on the challenging moment. Estella has not let the experience set her back one bit; she’s also qualified for the Canadian National Dressage Championships and looks forward to competing again then.

The riders all spoke so highly of their coach Brittney, who took several days to drive all the horses to Michigan and back again. They also thanked the many sponsors and the community that rallied behind them to help them fundraise for the many costs involved in attending such a show, as well as their parents who’ve been incredibly supportive. “All the mums – it doesn’t matter if you’re their kid, they’ll jump in and help!” says Imogen.

The Heirlooms I Keep It was a solid maple teacart, a mid-century marvel on wheels, an elegant fixture in many homes in the 60s and 70s.

It stood proudly on the variegated blue shag carpet – the kind we raked before company came. As kids, we respected the invisible boundary around and above it; we knew better than to roughhouse near it.

Every Saturday morning it was gently dusted, a silent shrine to mom’s china dolls, silverware chest and serving platters.

Mom died suddenly in April 2000, in a horrific car crash that also took two of her friends. She lived in rural Niagara; I was in Victoria.

When my brother and I cleared her apartment, I couldn’t bear to part with her things. I paid a small fortune to ship them across the country.

Including the teacart: an antique heirloom.

Growing up poor, my mom cherished quality. “Buy the best you can afford,” she used to say. Our home was warm and welcoming, and my parents entertained regularly, using the “good china” and wheeling out the teacart.

And I love to entertain, using her china, sterling flatware and crystal glasses.

I love welcoming people to a beautiful table. The elegance feels like a nod to a bygone era. Maybe not quite Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, but still joyful and warm.

My husband is less enchanted with my superb collection of fine china and crystal. “We don’t need all that stuff,” he

says. He’s not wrong, but how’s a girl to let go of the things that speak of “home” and “mom” to her?

How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter, might be a good place to start.

I’ve come to realize that my attachment to these things is rooted in the shock of losing my mom in my mid-30s. I lost future conversations, her stories, her wisdom. I lost a mom I never really got to know as an adult, and in her place, I clung to her belongings.

Perspective is everything: in the act of dealing with these precious pieces, I find the grip of grief lessening. I’ve been without my mom for nearly half my life, and I’ve come to realize she lives on not in her china, but in the intangible heirlooms of love, kindness, respect, and the joy of gathering.

But here’s the truth: mom isn’t in the crystal or silver. She’s not in the china pattern that shares her maiden name.

She’s in my heart. She’s in my memory of her laughter, her kindness, her sense of humour.

She’s in the way I treasure time with loved ones, and the joy I find in setting a beautiful table.

And the “antique” teacart?

It turns out my mom saved green stamps from her local supermarket for months to earn it. Recently, I sold it to someone who will treasure it as Mom did.

And I feel just fine about that.

But what do you think of when you hear of bands named Mama’s Kitchen, Corner Grass, and Couscous? If you guessed folk music you’d be right, as these names, like the music itself, are deeply rooted in community and everyday experiences.

“For me ‘folk’ is any music that circulates within a definable community and serves as a kind of glue to help to hold the community together,” adds Tim Rogers, director and also editor of Deep Cove Folk’s new anthology, Saanich Songs.

Sometimes the name of a band will tell you the genre and musical direction of the artists. When you hear Dead Kennedys, Suicidal Tendencies and Rancid, you know you’re going to hear the rebellious nihilism of punk.

For folk enthusiasts, they’re fortunate, as these are some of the bands featured at Deep Cove Folk Music Society. “What we do here at Deep Cove Folk is important,” says Bob de Wolff, Society director and President of Sidney’s Seaside Music Festival. “Folk music is community-based. It’s all about building trust in strong communities through the vehicle of music.”

Since 1989, club nights have occurred on the second Friday of each month. The evening typically begins with an open stage for local performers, followed by a feature performer.

This fall the lineup includes Bijoux du Bayou on September 12, Kevin Dempsey on October 10, One Wheel Band on November 14, and Hoss Mountain Stringband on December 12.

VSILLAGE GALLERY IDNEY, BC The venue of St. John’s United is well known for hosting community activities of all kinds over the years. “St. John’s is an old war time building with a 100-seat capacity,” says Bob. “The sound in it is remarkably good.”

Both Bob and Tim are veterans of the Canadian folk music scene and have performed and played in various groups. They discovered years ago the joy of community that brings people back to Deep Cove Folk Society time and time again.

“My wife and I arrived here 16 years ago from the prairies. We were actively involved in the folk music scene in Calgary.

We were welcomed into Deep Cove Folk Music with open arms; it felt like a big hug,” comments Bob. “I’m 76. The folk music from the 60s was the soundtrack of our lives and the anthems for me personally.”

“I was living in Deep Cove and was thrilled to have a local folk club,” adds Tark Hamilton, Artistic Director. “I got to play the open stage on the third folk night and began volunteering in all kinds of roles.”

Deep Cove Folk dates back to 1989, when founder Jill King was asked by a fellow musician where he might perform. Jill’s response not only resulted in a wellattended show, but it led to the idea of regular folk music events.

“My partner and I were living just down the road from the small St. Paul’s United Church. We had a friend visiting from California, David Lo Vine, and he asked if there was anywhere nearby that he might get a 'paying gig’,” she shares. “We had been going into Victoria every Sunday night for ‘The Folk' which just

seemed a long way to drive. So, I got in touch with the Church’s committee to see if we might rent the space. I wrote an article for the Sidney newspaper and made posters and pinned them on various poles and places around Deep Cove. Then we crossed our fingers!”

The evening was a roaring success, the first “full house” and one of many to follow.

In the years that ensued, community members have regularly gathered to celebrate both local talent and musical artistry from as far away as the United Kingdom and Australia.

A love of folk music and appreciating it communally are the ties that bind everyone.

“Folk music means so much to me – the stories it tells, the histories it relates, the people who like listening to it, and those who like singing and playing it. I think that it’s accessible to just about everybody,” says Jill.

Our Most Abundant Owl

(that you might never see!)

Most of us have become familiar with the “who cooks for you” call or the monkey-like screams of the Barred Owl, a species that was first recorded in Victoria in 1969, but did you know there is a smaller owl that is much more common – at least every fall?

The Northern saw-whet owl, only about the size of a medium beverage cup, moves through the forests of Vancouver Island each fall in spectacular numbers.

Since 2002, staff and volunteers at Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) have been intercepting these intriguing owls in Metchosin before they make the non-stop flight across the Juan de Fuca Strait. In doing so, the research team has learned many things about them.

• Vancouver Island appears to act like a funnel for the birds as they move south.

monitoring stations in North America. In 2017, 1,850 of these cuties were caught, banded and released over a six-week period. That’s about double the normal amount and was likely due to the fires in the interior that year pushing the birds to the coast.

• Their new feathers glow pink under ultraviolet light. Like many birds of prey, northern saw-whet owls replace only some of their wing feathers

each year. Newly grown feathers contain a pigment called porphyrin, which glows bright pink under black (UV) light. The pattern of the pink feathers helps determine how old the owl is.

• Northern saw-whet owls can capture prey almost half their size! Their most common foods in our area are deer mice and Townsend’s voles. While they can swallow the mice

whole, the voles may serve for two or three meals.

• Some of the northern sawwhet owls take the longer, scenic route south. Tracking using radio tags showed that at least some prefer to island hop across the Gulf and San Juan islands on their trip south rather than take the direct route across the Juan de Fuca Strait.

• These small owls can fly long distances in a short time. A young male tagged at Pedder Bay in September 2014 was recaught by researchers in Boise, Idaho, just 18 days later. That’s about 800 km if he flew in a straight line. (Hint: they don’t fly in a straight line!)

Growing a better community grant-by-grant

He weighed half a gram more when they recaught him than he did when he left Victoria.

Now that you are intrigued, here’s how to go about finding a northern saw-whet owl this fall.

Being nocturnal, these owls roost in the daytime. They often settle into thick vegetation like blackberry patches, holly trees and hedges. Listen for robins and other birds sounding very angry.

They may have found one for you, but it might not be easy to see.

Right around dusk and dawn, you may be able to hear them

call. Their “hoot” sounds more like a “toot” of a whistle or recorder. They make a variety of other sounds as well. You can find recordings on the eBird or Merlin apps to study the calls.

Between mid-September and the end of October, visit RPBO at the Pedder Bay Marina during owl monitoring. There is no guarantee, but it is definitely the most likely way to get to see one up close. Visit the RPBO website (www.rpbo.org) for more information on reserving a spot. Be prepared for a cuteness overload!

World Record Challenger Bradley Smith Guiness World Record challenger – for electric skateboard – Bradley Smith says that he’s “not a speed freak or a trickster.” Instead, it’s about pushing himself to the limit in regards to the distance he can cover on his skateboard.

After travelling for a month from Saskatoon to Victoria, covering over 1,500 kilometres, he broke the previous world records.

Like many passionate professionals, Bradley says that he’s “always been boarding.” Whether it was snowboarding, paddleboarding or manual skateboarding and longboarding as a form of transportation, it’s been a lifelong journey on boards.

Bradley was born on Salt Spring Island, moved to the interior with his family growing up and travelled around the province as he got older. He says he came “full circle back to Vancouver Island” and “dabbled with Victoria” but it wasn’t for 76 | SEPTEMBER 2025 | Seaside

him. Now he lives in Willis Point in Brentwood Bay and has worked for the North Saanich Municipality for over five years. Based on his experience boarding in other provinces, it’s clear to see why he chose the West Coast as his home base in terms of weather.

Bradley says that a regular electric skateboard battery can last for 50 to 60 kilometres. He always carries a backup, which sits on top of his board, so he can usually skate about 130 kilometres overall. He also carries a backpack with tools, and of course water and other basic necessities. Starting his trip in Saskatchewan, Bradley quickly learned that going “east to west” was “going the wrong way.” Underestimating the prairie winds having never spent time there, Bradley says he only made it 70 kilometres before being stranded. The

wind resistance acted as a battery killer, and rain could also damage the board and battery, both of which slowed him down and required more breaks in his trip. But perfect strangers picked him up and other skateboard record breakers from around the world, including Venezuela and Italy, supported his goal before he'd even set out.

As one can imagine, challenging a Guiness World Record is not an easy feat. The detailed application process includes providing the exact distance, route and time frame. A list of requirements is sent back to the applicant and since Bradley’s board was a DIY built board from an engineer in Chilliwack, he wasn’t sure if it would meet the standards. But his eligibility was confirmed, so Bradley bought three different trackers to ensure each stage was tracked.

He also had to take photos along the route and explain each stop he took. Although it was a big accomplishment that he in no way regrets, Bradley says he enjoys long-distance boarding “just for the journey” and that all the complications challenging the record “took the fun out of it.”

Bradley has been having fun boarding throughout the country for years. He took up

longboarding when he moved back to the Peninsula in 2005, boarding from Victoria over the Malahat to Salt Spring Island.

In 2008, he flew to St. Johns, Newfoundland, and manually boarded his way back over five months. But when the electric boards came out after 2015, Bradley says he was fully “hooked on doing long distance adventures” because electric skateboards are like an “endless ride down a hill.” And, even with all of the travelling he’s been doing, he’s only had two electric skateboards and says boarding has “totally engulfed everything I do outside of work.”

Already skating across sections of the Trans Canada Trail around Nanaimo, and doing casual 200-kilometre longweekend trips on the Island last month, Bradley aims to traverse the whole length of Vancouver Island in 2026. He also knows he’ll go across Canada again, and may even try a B.C. to Mexico trip in the future. Currently in the process of confirming his two Guinness World Records, Bradley says he has a “trillion ideas” for future trips because boarding is his life. So, if you love doing something, you can challenge records, do it either as work or with your free time, or just for the joy and journey of it.

Shelley, my sister (at right), was 64 years old and six months away from retiring from her 30-year career as a litigation lawyer in the Fraser Valley. Erin Benzakein’s book, Cut Flower Farm, jumped off the shelf at her.

“I was enthralled with the gorgeous photographs and in that instant knew what I wanted to do next – start a flower-growing business.

Flowers on my desk at work and at home had always brought me joy. This book was a ‘sign’ from the universe!” she says.

Shelley owns a 40-acre farm on South Pender Island, which was basically just open hay fields and a forested area. There was no infrastructure, and the rocky soil bottoms out with a heavy clay base, making it a challenge to grow anything.

Water supply is a real challenge on the Gulf Islands, and most folks depend on their own wells and ponds or they have water trucked in to fill cisterns. Deer are plentiful.

back. Shelley was definitely not a farmer and had not even bought a package of seeds in the past!

But she full heartedly accepted these challenges and, in the fall of 2017, began the project. A pond was dug for a water supply, followed by a seven-foot-high deer fence, a greenhouse, and a 13 by 10-foot garden shed.

An aerating water pump system was constructed that includes multiple underground lines. Various pieces of equipment were acquired, including an ancient Toro zero-turn ride-amower. “It can be terrifying; there have been a few close calls wherein the Toro has ditched its driver ... luckily, no injuries!” Shelley says.

Other equipment includes a rototiller and a noisy (also scary) chipper for grinding up the garden plant residue and tree leaves in the fall for compost. Shelley says she is not mechanically minded, but has learned to operate them all, albeit with a fair assortment of “occasional cursing and kicking at tires when they don’t start.”

In the fall of 2018, Shelley took Floret’s online flowergrowing course. “It was amazing!” Supplies included hoses, netting to support the plants, buckets, hydrating solution, clippers, vases and jars, and truckloads of organic soil. Organic amending and enriching the soil is ongoing – no soil, no blooms! Each year in January, she spends hours admiring the online flower seed catalogues and making her decisions on what flowers to grow. In early March, the first seeds are planted. She starts them in 72-cell trays that are placed on hot mats. After germination, they are put in trays under grow lights.

Once the weather warms up, the seedlings are moved to the heated garden shed and then brought out to the greenhouse during the day for extended sunlight in addition to the lights.

By the first week of May, it’s time for the 1,000 or so seedlings to “grow up,” and they are planted outside in the garden. The many flowers include celosia, cosmos, snap dragons, various Queen Ann laces, Irish bells, zinnias,

straw flowers, phlox, bee balm, poppies and cerinthe.

Dahlias are a favourite, and she plants several hundred tubers each year.

The growing season is short and ends with the first frost when the dahlias wither and call it quits. “Thank goodness, is all I can say,” says Shelley.

Throughout the summer, growing flowers requires thinning, pinching, staking and netting, deadheading, constant weeding, fertilizing and watering. Then there is the best part – making bouquets, which Shelley sells at her roadside stand for $15 each. She also loves creating beautiful bouquets and arrangements for weddings and other celebrations. “Giving flowers to family and friends is what I treasure and find most fulfilling.”

Shelley’s home has flowers all year round. “A dinner party with flowers on the table makes it extra special, and a homemade birthday cake, decorated with rose buds and tiny blooms, is gorgeous!”

Like any other skill, flower arranging takes a little practice, or a lot depending on your goals, says Shelley. She

says to start with a classic, wide-mouthed vase around eight inches high. Make a “nest” of greenery around the outside, which will support the stems you insert into the arrangement. Always strip the stems of leaves which will be submerged. To balance, think in odd numbers. For example: three hydrangea, three roses, or five snap dragons. This “rule of thumb” seems to be a universal decorating guideline.

buckets and vases are sparkling clean and use a homemade or commercial hydrating solution as a preservative. Change the water every two or three days and snip the stem end at an angle to promote water absorption.

Flowers won’t last in a hot car, and they don’t like being placed in the sun either. Put them outside at night or in a cool spot to help keep them looking beautiful.

Another suggestion Shelley makes is to “forage” (with permission as opposed to trespassing!) and experiment with local wildflowers and shrubs. For example, a few pieces of tree branches with blossoms look lovely in an attractive vase. Add greenery such as mint, rosemary (smells so good!), and the new growth on mock orange bushes, smoke bushes, Solomon’s seal, and the like. Consider treating yourself to a few primary blooms, such as roses, elegant lisianthus or chrysanthemums from your grocery store or florist, and then “forage” about to complete the bouquet.

I

didn’t really start to enjoy cooking until I was in my early 20s and had left home. While growing up, it was my younger sister that my mom left in charge of chopping vegetables for the salad, putting dinner in the oven at a set time, or being the sous chef to our mother as she whipped up a homemade meal.

But when I moved out on my own, all of a sudden there was nothing waiting in the oven for me at the end of the day. Takeout was a once-in-a-while luxury on my part-time worker / full-time student budget, so I had no choice but to learn to cook for myself.

At first, dinner was often grilled cheese or something simple ... let’s face it: it’s not much fun to cook dinner for one. But as romantic relationships entered the picture and I began to experience the joy of cooking for someone else, I realized how much I enjoyed the magic of watching seemingly disconnected ingredients come together with just time and a recipe.

Inspiration for these recipes came from the Food Network, magazines (Canadian Living is still a favourite for this!) and the occasional cookbook.

I branched out beyond what I ate growing up and started really exploring different flavours and cultures, creating dishes that sometimes were a hit, sometimes a miss, but always worth trying.

Whether you're an expert chef or just starting out on your kitchen journey, we hope there is something for everyone in our annual culinary issue.

If corn is one of your chosen veggies, Tracie Zahavich and Ross Bowles of Fox and Monocole have three great ideas for how you can use this flexible favourite (pg 32). Maybe you're looking for something to pair with a late-summer meal; in Off the Vine (pg 26) Richard Hope shares the best of what Italy has to offer. The Cridge Centre for the Family's Brain Injury Services provides independent housing with support for survivors of brain injury. Through the development of support groups like The Blue Sheet Club, we strive to provide opportunities for personal development and reintegration in the community. Creating Word Jumbles are a great way to improve cognitive functioning. Plus they're fun too! Enjoy!

From current events discussions and hands-on experiences exploring local museum exhibits to cultural celebrations and meaningful one-on-one visits, our recreation programming offers something for everyone. Each day brings opportunities for shared laughter, thoughtful conversations, and the joy of connecting hearts and minds.

As students across the Peninsula head back to school this fall, we share in their excitement and fondly reflect on our own first days of learning, filled with anticipation and curiosity.

Ursula was once one of those young children heading back to school with anticipation; that love of learning has never waned, and Sidney All Care is the perfect place for her to nurture her passions!
