INVESTING 101Ensuring you Understand Your Portfolio

Would you like to gain a better understanding of your investments?

A recent study found that 68% of investors say they have at least one challenge to understanding their investments, with the biggest challenge being the need for more financial knowledge (30%) followed by confusion surrounding financial concepts (22%) and the information not being presented clear (21%)1. Many clients do not know what they are invested in or where they should be directing their savings.

Finance and investing can be intimidating and overwhelming, with terms like ‘yield’, ‘dividend’, and ‘asset mix’ sounding like a foreign language.

I am passionate about teaching my clients and prospective clients the ‘ins and outs’ of investing in a non-intimidating, welcoming environment.

It is never too early or too late to learn.

First Word from the Publisher Sue

On June 17 we hosted our Seventh Annual Taking It To The Street Charity Road Hockey Tournament fundraiser in support of Help Fill A Dream, and it was a banner success! To date we have raised over $135,000. We had to wait three years to start it all over again, and I was thrilled to see the team of family, friends and colleagues all come together to make it happen. As the hockey event was all outdoors, and with June having very unsettled weather patterns, I checked the long-range forecast every day for weeks in advance. Low and behold we got the only day with perfect conditions!

Every year at our event, we have a dream reveal for a child in need. This year it was presented to Jackson. Jax has Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy Level IV, Epilepsy. Jax and his family love the outdoors and to be active, biking and hiking. Bike riding is Jax's favourite and we were able to present him with his very own trike, and in his favourite colour too! This specialized trike will be used for home and school, allowing for much better mobility, and help his leg muscles gain strength, especially as he grows up.

We all know that it takes a village to raise a child; well, I think it takes a community to build a village. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that helped us put on this event this year. Without all your help we could not have done this. You'll find photos from our amazing day on pages 16 and 17.

The Doobie Brothers released a song in 1976 called Taking It To The Street. It was meant to bring a message directly to the people, and part of this message was from the perspective of someone growing up amid poverty and addressing an audience that has no idea what it's like to live there: "You don't know my kind of world." This always resonated with me. Over seven years of working with Help Fill A Dream, meeting some of the families and learning the challenges they have, we really don't know what their world is like. That's why Seaside's Taking It To The Street charity event is so important!

Again, thank you everyone, and have a great summer!

Sidney Spit

What's to escape from when you live on the Peninsula?

Nothing really: we live in a postcard already, but if you want an island getaway within your island life getaway, look no further than Sidney Spit. A draw amongst tourist, boaters and residents alike, a day at the Spit is about as close to Hawaii as you can get without getting on a plane. For the more adventurous, pack up your tent, sleeping bag and cook stove and spend the night at one of their reservable sites. Seeing a perfect weather day in the forecast, I booked two tickets on the Sidney Spit Ferry for myself and my daughter, Kara, who was visiting from Winnipeg. For a modest price, a little passenger ferry will pick you and yours up from the Sidney downtown waterfront. Be sure to check exact location for pickup, as we found out it had changed, giving us a bit of a stressful run to the proper departure spot! Note to self – read the small print!

Nonetheless, we were greeted by Natalia, first mate and the extra eyes and ears and hands to Captain Mike. She loaded us up, briefed us on our day's adventures and we set sail – minus the sail, of course. It was a delightful 30-ish minute ride and it allowed a cool vista, seeing Sidney getting smaller and smaller in the distance as we progressed.

Upon arrival we were informed that a cougar had been spotted in the area … which I found funny because usually it's the cheetahs who are spotted! (lol.) Anyway, we were told we should just use common sense if we see the cougar – and since neither of us have much common sense regarding cougars, we decide that Janis the photographer's picnic will make an adequate sacrifice for said wildlife*.

The hiking on the Spit is lovely, pleasant and I would say easy given that it is mainly a flat piece of land. We walked for an hour or so and returned back to the main beach to enjoy our picnic – doesn't everything just taste better outside?

Be warned that there is no place to get water, food or other such pleasures, so plan accordingly. There is, most importantly, a couple of pit toilets tucked away, and we extend much gratitude to Parks

DAY OUT

Canada for maintaining these for us; toilet paper included!

After our tummies were satiated, it was off for a little beach time and the flavour of the day was frisbee – a little in the water and a little out. I hadn't played in a while and it was all sorts of fun!

The times that the ferry runs can change and the day we went there were fewer sailings because of low tide, so our day was a bit shorter than I would have liked. Next time I'll take the first ferry out and the last one home. Important note: don't miss the last ferry because if you do, it's all on you to figure out the Plan B!

In the late afternoon, with the breeze blowing in our hair, we watched Sidney get bigger before our eyes. Captain Mike, previously a captain on BC Ferries, told me he had "a dream job" now and one of the things he loved most about his job was that the people on board were always happy.

And why wouldn't we be; we just spent a beautiful day on the Spit!

As Kara said, it was a beautiful little island on which to unplug and unwind with a quiet forest walk or beach lounging.

*No cougar was fed in the research of this article, phew.

Ahhh the Great Outdoors

Exercise is well known for its ability to improve physical health, but did you know that outdoor fitness and exercise can also have a significant impact on our mental health and mood? Living on Vancouver Island we can see so much beauty: from the vast ocean and mountains surrounding us to the farmlands and green space in between it all.

One of the most significant benefits of outdoor exercise is the opportunity to connect with nature. Research has shown that spending time in nature can have a calming effect on our nervous system and reduce stress levels. When we exercise outdoors, we are not only benefitting from physical activity but also experiencing the healing effects of nature.

In addition to the calming effect it provides, outdoor exercise can stimulate the production of endorphins – chemicals in the brain that improve our mood and reduce feelings of pain and stress. Endorphins are often referred to as the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals, and outdoor exercise is an excellent way to stimulate their production

Another way that outdoor exercise can boost our mood is by providing a change of scenery and a break from our daily routines. Often, we get stuck in the same patterns of behaviour and thoughts, which can contribute to feelings of boredom and disinterest. By getting outside and exploring new environments, we challenge ourselves mentally and physically, leading to increased feelings of excitement and motivation.

Outdoor exercise also provides an opportunity to socialize and

connect with others. Joining a running group, hiking club or outdoor fitness class can provide a sense of community and support that can have a positive impact on our mental health. Socializing and connecting with others boosts feelings of happiness, reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness, and provides a sense of purpose and belonging.

Finally, outdoor exercise provides the opportunity to feel a sense of accomplishment and mastery. When we challenge ourselves to push beyond our physical limits, whether that's by completing a long walk, running a race or mastering a new yoga pose, we experience a sense of pride and satisfaction that boosts our self-esteem and confidence. These feelings can spill over into other areas of our lives, contributing to a greater sense of well-being and happiness.

Exercising outdoors has become increasingly popular since the pandemic. When restrictions on indoor gatherings and gym closures happened, people had to turn to outdoor exercise as a safe and healthy alternative. The outdoors allows for social distancing, the reassurance of which many people needed then and still often do. People saw such benefits that they have chosen to continue with outdoor activities more than ever.

Nature has been proven time and time again to reduce anxiety, stress, depression and improve focus. No matter how you access the outdoors, a growing body of research shows the benefits are endless. The next time you're feeling down or stressed, consider heading outside to reap the many benefits that outdoor exercise has to offer. For more information visit www.makingchangesfitness.com.

SIDNEY'S BIGGEST SALE OF THE YEAR

On June 17, 2023, friends, family and hockey teammates gathered for the seventh annual Seaside Magazine Taking It To The Street Charity Road Hockey Tournament in support of Help Fill a Dream. After being on hiatus since 2019, it was clear that everyone was happy to be able to participate in this amazing event once again.

Competition was fierce, community support was strong and donations were generous – at the end of the event, $12,244 had been raised for Help Fill a Dream. A highlight of the day was when 12-year-old Dream recipient Jackson Poole was officially presented with his customized Discovery Adventure Series Trike so he can bike with his family.

Tears were shed, fun was had and Taking It To the Street proved once again what an amazing community we live in. Thank you to all who were a part of this special day.

Expect the Unexpected in the Broughton Archipelago!

While the Saanich Peninsula is undeniably a fabulous place to live, many make a quick exit in the summer, voyaging the edge of Vancouver Island in search of nature, respite and adventure. The Broughton Archipelago is boating heaven and to enter, one must meet the challenge of Johnstone Strait. If 2023 is the year you venture northward, the rewards are unparalleled beauty, wildlife encounters and solitude in wilderness spiced with trial by wind, tide and current.

For the reader familiar with the area, the important news is – expect changes. For those visiting for the first time, be aware that not all the guides are up to date.

Lagoon Cove Resort, where little has changed except the ownership, may be your first stop. Dan and Kelley will welcome you with the same warmth as the previous owners before you make your way into the islets and inlets of the Broughton Archipelago.

The kayaker may travel solo or be part of an all-service guided tour. Camping comfort can now be found in Broughton Archipelago Marine Park, on an island in the Fox Group adjacent to Retreat Passage. There are 12 tent platforms, two roofed open-sided "kitchens" with nicely made picnic tables and two composting biffies. BC Parks and Kwikwasut'inux/ Hakwa'mis First Nation (owners since 2020 of the marina at Echo Bay) selected the site, and careful construction caused very little disruption to the midden.

Kwaxwalawadi (previously known as Pierre's @ Echo Bay) are in transition. Although needed work is underway, the marina is open for business. Fill up your fuel tanks and charge the batteries. The aging wooden docks are being upgraded with repurposed fish farm walkways. As boater traffic increases, you'll find more essential food items in the store/Post Office. Stamps can be purchased for Thursday's outgoing mail.

The somewhat challenging trail through the forest from Echo Bay to Billy's Museum and around to Echo Bay Marine Park has been modified with widened pathways and viewing benches. Future vision at Kwaxwalawadi will focus on cultural opportunities; ideas under discussion are First Nations dance and storytelling presentations, local arts and crafts, cedar carving, workshops and demos.

You can camp at Echo Bay Marine Park, but the dock is undergoing demolition by BC Parks. Built in 1963, the Echo Bay Community Centre building has collapsed and the debris remains to be cleaned up. The park has a composting outhouse, a midden beach and a walk by the creek; keep your eyes open for bears, both black and grizzly.

Dive deep into history and coastal books at Billy's Museum and, for the art lover, paintings and pottery at SeaRose Studio. Paddlers Inn offers kayak support and float-cabin lodging.

Beyond Echo Bay, several small family-owned resorts have closed: Kwatsi Bay Marina, Shawl Bay, Jennis Bay Marina in Drury Inlet. Last stop before Queen Charlotte Strait is Sullivan Bay where you can stock the galley and liquor cabinet and fuel up.

There are many wonderful catered cruises to the Broughton Archipelago to choose from, and each one delivers an incomparable experience.

From rowboat to big yacht, we welcome the boats of summer. Carry some cash and potable water, remember internet is not always reliable, and respectfully honour wilderness protocol; leave no trace.

August 16 In My Life: A Beatles

Songbook

All you need is love … and Beatles songs! In My Life: A Beatles Songbook celebrates the history and iconic music of the greatest rock band that ever was.

The group of talented musicians is led by Bruce Coughlan, a career songwriter, rock-solid guitarist, and lead singer of Tiller’s Folly. On keyboards is right-hand man

Marc Gladstone, who played with Doug and the Slugs, Nick Gilder/Sweeney Todd, the Brandon Paris Band, Prism, and Stone Poets. On bass is country singer Gordon Maxwell, who played and sang for Ian Tyson for 20 years, was one of the lead singers and songwriters in the Juno-nominated One Horse Blue, and is currently the bassist/vocalist in the legendary rock band Chilliwack. Selfprofessed “avid drum nerd” Nick James is a sought-after drummer for hire in many Lower Mainland bands.

The guys tell stories about how the four lads from Liverpool have influenced their lives, from when they first heard Beatles music as kids to looking back across a lifetime of inspiration. Take it from the Port Hardy Engager: “Great introductions, stories, a bit of historical context, and a fabulous list of songs will have everyone dancing and singing the night away with some of the most unforgettable music of all time.” And polish up your pipes for the singalong of audience favourites!

AMBER TONSI: Writing Pride

June marked the beginning of Pride across Canada, with the Island's major celebration occurring at the beginning of July. In honour of our community's LGBTQQIP2SAA folks, this month's column features a remarkable up-and-coming author of two books, Amber Dawn Tonsi.

Amber Dawn is not shy about who she is – she says that she was coming out around the same time that she had her first child and became disabled. "I've tried to model being unapologetic about taking up space and having my voice heard." She wants to ensure that not only her own kids see the importance of this, but also her readers.

Like many authors and writers, Amber Dawn started telling stories when she was young. She says that she remembers "scribbling gibberish before [she] knew how to write." But whatever she wrote, it was always fantasy-based, with different worlds and fantastical characters. As an early teen she focused on vampires and always made sure the stories ended happily. Now she focuses more on queer romance and mystery in the paranormal realm. Throughout her books, her central goal is to model the plot and the lives of her characters around what she's seen in her own life. She says that she wants people to read "where queerness is more than a plot point or an obstacle – where it just is." Amber Dawn is grateful to have found an audience that wants to read about love and trust in queer spaces and about chosen family, whether it's a cozy mystery or a big adventure.

The author, who goes by the pen name A.D. Tonsi, has written two books, and is currently working on her third and forth. The first, In the Hatred of a Minute, is a horror romance that examines power and isolation, obsession and the macabre. Amber Dawn says: "I dared myself to write it to see if I could," and she's proud that she did. Her second book, Barefoot Amongst the Thorns, is about two men who love

each other despite convention and have a race through time to survive a curse. Amber Dawn says that this tale is not as heavy as her first book, but is still as passionate.

As far as inspiration, Amber Dawn can look at photographs or a piece of art and this alone "can be enough to build an entire story." Whether it's just one scene that sticks out, or an inspiration that she ends up writing her story around, she admits that she rarely writes an outline. Living in Sidney, the water and the small town are helping to guide her next worlds and characters for one of her upcoming books.

Outside of her mythically-crafted worlds, Amber Dawn has found a bit of the fantastic in her own life. Mistaken several times for another local West Coast author with the same name who writes in the same genre, Amber Dawn says that she has been surprised to find a doppelganger so close to home. Will this feature appear as an unusual twist in an upcoming book? Her readers will have to wait and find out!

One of her upcoming books features "a ship captain who is definitely not a pirate, and a sea creature who is most certainly not a merman." What happens when the two characters meet is another adventure that readers can look forward to in the next few years.

Amber Dawn's two books can be found online and as e-books from the Greater Victoria Public Library. She recommends that anyone who has dreamt of writing a queer book about their own stories, whether real or imagined, should take the leap like she did. She looks forward to continuing to write the stories that she didn't have growing up, ones that show "that queerness is acceptable, encouraged, and survivable … to show that we deserve a happily ever-after."

To find out more about the author and local readings of her books, visit www.adtonsi.wordpress.com. She also writes personalized stories through her site www.betterlightingcreations.wordpress.com

MICHELL FARMS: Farm Fresh to Your Family

There’s nothing like picking fresh vegetables from your own garden to make a meal. How about picking a dizzying array of produce from a garden that is over 400 acres to serve thousands of meals!

Michell’s Farm is a well-known Central Saanich landmark where family, community and the food to table concept are at the heart of the operation. “We are a sixth-generation farm,” shares Terry Michell. “Over time, we’ve really grown here in size and product. We now harvest about 5,000 tons of products, translating into hundreds of thousands of servings.”

Adds Tom Michell, Terry’s brother: “We’re doing the best we can to offer a top quality product for the consumer to enjoy at the dinner table.” Generally speaking, farm to table means food made from locallygrown ingredients. The concept highlights the importance of local food security, food access, sustainability and the health of community. Since William Michell first cleared the land in the 1860s, the farm has been a family farm. The land and the operation have passed down through the generations, with each family member taking on a role. Running an operation of this size requires planning and people with different specialized skill sets. Kevin Michell, Terry’s son, manages

planting and irrigation. Tom keeps the market supplied fully with its needs. As well as handling foreign workers, Nicole Verhagen, Terry’s daughter, oversees integrated pest management and a host of other documentation.

“I love that we’re all here,” shares Terry’s daughter, Jenni. “Everyone has found their way to what they’re passionate about and what matters to them.”

Set in the Martindale Valley, Michell’s Farm grows and harvests a bounty of produce distributed through both wholesalers, such as Islands West, Country Grocer, Thrifty Foods, Rootcellar and Red Barn Markets, and its onsite retail market.

“I manage the market, the staff, and coordinate customer relationships with passion,” relates Celia Michell, Terry’s wife. “This is where the fresh produce arrives daily. It’s a very busy place.”

For customers coming through the front door, the choice is diverse. Years ago, only a few kinds of vegetables and berries were grown. Over time, however, others have been added. Currently, over 50 varieties of vegetables and fruits are grown. Whether you want corn-on-the-cob and salad ingredients for that family barbecue, or strawberries and raspberries for an elegant torte or parfait, you’re in luck: at Michell’s Market, items are fresh picked and not shipped in from thousands of miles away as you might find in a grocery store.

What would a summer barbecue be without steaks on the grill? Michell’s Farm offers their own pasture-raised beef products such

as steaks, stew beef, roasts, corned beef, frozen ground beef, and cured items.

A 100-acre pasture along Island View Road is home to over 140 head of cattle managed by Greg Michell, Tom’s son, and Greg’s right hand man, Andy Duke.

“Our beef brand name is ‘born and raised,’ says Greg. “Our product is 100% local, meaning we are raising the cattle, we’re breeding and we’re calving. We are not only local to the Island but also to the Saanich Peninsula.”

Mostly Hereford and Angus, the cattle feed well on hay and corn grown right at the farm as well as nutritious barley root from local Field Five Farms. Detailed attention to daily care is critical, as Greg comments: “We’re in and amongst the cows every day, interacting with them and doing a health check. We’re hands on as much as we can.”

In addition, Michell’s Farms has an onsite eatery, another wonderful example of the farm to fork idea in action.

“100% of the beef and almost all the produce come from Michell’s Farms. I source from other farms for things we don’t grow,” shares Jenni Michell, owner and operator of Harvest Rd. “We have pork from Berryman Brothers Meat Ltd. and vegetables from farms including SunWing, Square Root and Kildara.”

By providing food that is grown locally, the farm helps to bolster the larger farming community and local economy. “We are supporting local agriculture which creates community,” says Jenni. “We know our neighbours, and money is circulating in our community.”

The name “Harvest Rd.” reflects the opportunity offered to customers to buy and eat local products and to appreciate local farms. “From the grill, people can see the cows grazing, the fields, and the harvest along the road,” relates Jenni. “We have people that come here who have never been to the market. So, it’s a great opportunity for them to see the produce they’ve now tasted here and can take home to prepare their own meals.”

From the farm to the onsite restaurant and to your dining table, it’s fresh, nutritious, local food. Just like the backyard gardener picking fresh vegetables for their family’s meal, the Michell’s Farm family takes equal pride and pleasure in offering you the bounty of their large Peninsula garden and fields.

THE INTEREST RATE: JUST ONE PIECE OF THE PUZZLE WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT MORTGAGE

When searching for the right mortgage, it's easy to get fixated on finding the lowest interest rate available, especially in the interest rate environment that we find ourselves in today. While the interest rate is an essential factor, it's crucial to recognize that it's just one piece of the puzzle. There are other equally significant factors to consider when selecting the mortgage that best suits your financial needs and long-term goals.

Terms of the Loan and Monthly Payments. Beyond the interest rate, it's essential to consider the loan term and resulting monthly payments. A mortgage with a shorter term may have higher monthly payments but could save you a significant amount in interest payments over the life of the loan. Conversely, a longer-term mortgage may offer lower monthly payments, but you may end up paying more in interest over time. Evaluating your budget, financial goals and your ability to make the monthly payments is crucial in determining the mortgage term that best aligns with your circumstances.

Prepayment Options, Penalties and the Fine Print. Prepayment flexibility is another critical factor to consider. Some mortgages allow for additional principal payments, enabling you to pay off your mortgage faster and save on interest. However, other mortgages may impose penalties for prepayment, restricting your ability to reduce the loan balance ahead of schedule. Understanding the prepayment options and penalties associated with each mortgage product is essential. Not all mortgages are created equal and the "no frills" type of mortgages can have especially restrictive clauses and fine print to be aware of.

While the interest rate is a critical factor in choosing your mortgage, it's important to recognize that choosing the right mortgage involves considering multiple factors. Examining the loan term, monthly payments, loan type, prepayment options and reading the fine print is essential to make an informed decision. By evaluating these factors holistically you can select a mortgage that aligns with your financial goals, provides long-term affordability, and ensures a smooth homeownership journey.

No matter where the rates are – high or low – it is important to define your goals and know what is important to you when it comes to your biggest asset and largest debt obligation in life. A mortgage affords us the means to create a home for our families, but it can also be a source of stress. If the last two years have taught us anything, it's that life can be unpredictable and we all need to plan for the unexpected and consider the big picture when choosing the right mortgage fit. It's not always about the lowest interest rate.

JALAPEÑOS 3 WAYS

Hooray for jalapeños! These flavour-packed peppers are easy to grow, are moderately spicy and are full of health benefits!

Jalapeños can be planted in spring and harvested through late fall which allows for the flavour to be enjoyed through many seasons. Jalapeños can add just a hint of spice by removing the seeds and membrane, or can really pack a punch by leaving them in to bring the heat! Jalapeños are full of vitamins, antioxidants and can boost metabolism.

I love cooking with spice and jalapeños are a great way to bring some zing to any of

The Adventures of Baby Doll

In early May we brought home the newest addition to our family: a beautiful baby girl. We were busy adapting to life as a family of four (six really, including our dog and horse who have very much been a part of the adaptation) when a seventh member unexpectedly joined our family: Baby Doll.

During those first few days at home with our newborn, our threeyear-old daughter regressed to acting like a baby herself – I'd heard of this happening with older siblings so we weren't too surprised. She'd curl up in the newborn's bassinet (said newborn was never in the bassinet at the same time, I should add) talk in a "baby" voice, try to put on and wear the new baby's clothes, play with the rattles and other baby toys, ask repeatedly for a soother, attempt to drink out of a bottle, request to be swaddled, and so on. She even came up with a name for her alter-ego baby: Sidia. "I'm not a big girl, I'm Baby Sidia. Babies can't talk!" she'd chirp back at us if we asked her a question and we'd been met with silence from our normally very chatty girl.

Then after a few days of settling into life with a newborn sister, my eldest suddenly latched onto her one doll toy. My parents had gifted it to her years ago and not once had she ever shown any interest in this doll. Her horse toys had always been her favourites, but suddenly, Baby Doll appeared as the new chosen one. Our three-year-old had transformed from Baby Sidia into a mother. Anytime I had to sit on the couch to feed our newborn, she'd rush over to sit beside me and hold her Baby Doll, burp her and rock her tenderly in her arms. If our newborn was being swaddled for bedtime, Baby Doll needed to be swaddled as well. Diaper changes, you guessed it: Baby Doll had a diaper change too. Our house became littered with diapers (clean) from Baby Doll's various changes. Our newborn's clothing baskets were raided so that Baby Doll could be dressed up multiple times a day.

One afternoon I found Baby Doll wrapped in a receiving blanket in my daughter's bright red, toddler-sized wheelbarrow in my room. My eldest came running in, finger pressed to her lips, shushing me. "Baby Doll's sleeping!" she whispered before running back down the hallway to our living room. I closed the bedroom door and went back to my perch on the couch, my own baby fast asleep in my arms. Suddenly, my eldest shouted at the top of her lungs "CRY! CRY! CRY!" and went racing into the bedroom. She reappeared, rocking Baby Doll in her arms, comforting her with coos and gentle pats. She spent the rest of the afternoon rolling the portable "crib" back and forth from room to room; when it was time for bed that night, the wheelbarrow crib had been lifted into her own bed, mimicking how we'd set up the newborn's bassinet in our own bed. My eldest sobbed when I gently told her that unfortunately, the wheelbarrow couldn't stay in her bed overnight as a) it was a safety issue and b) even if I had allowed it, there wasn't enough room for her to fit in beside the wheelbarrow.

Baby Doll has continued to accompany us on almost every stroller walk; she's ridden through the neighbourhood in the basket of the Strider bike, she's been rocked back and forth in the baby swing and gone for a ride on the rocking horse; she's even slept on our deck when she went "camping" for one night.

While it's been an adjustment adding a new member to our family and there's been a wide range of emotions, Baby Doll has played an important role in helping to ease this transition (as well as provided daily comic relief). I'm certain her adventures will continue to entertain us all and serve as a constant reminder, for better or for worse, that my actions as a mother are being constantly watched and now mimicked!

Your Summer Glow-Up: Feel Radiant This Season!

With the arrival of summer, it's time to revamp your skincare routine. As we spend more time outdoors and increase our sun exposure, its essential to adapt your skincare to keep your skin nourished and protected.

Sun Protection & Reapplication

Gone are the days of baking ourselves in the sun or laying in our backyards to get that sun-kissed glow. With the rise of skin cancer and sun-related health concerns, not to mention staying out of the sun to avoid premature aging, finishing your morning

skincare with a broad spectrum SPF is a non-negotiable step of your routine, all year round but especially at this time of year. After you've completed your routine and applied sun protection products, if you choose to apply makeup over your SPF look for something lightweight such as a tinted moisturizer, bb cream or mineral powder containing SPF for an added protective layer. Reapplying your sun protection every few hours is also a must. I recommend a dry powder sunscreen that can be used on its own or applied over makeup every few hours. For body protection, look for mineral-based,

reef safe organic options that should also be reapplied every few hours and after swimming.

Faux Glow

Missing that tanned sun-kissed glow but don't want to compromise your skin? There are many safe faux tanning options available. I love an organic spray tan for my skin, which offers a natural-looking glow. If you prefer a DIY approach, reach for an organic tanning mousse or gradual tan lotion to build a beautiful bronzed look to your liking.

Refresh, Exfoliate & Hydrate

Chatterton Way Dental may be our new name and location, but our office has been serving Victoria for over 40 years. Our brand new space offers ease of access from all over Greater Victoria. Dr. Matthew Foulkes and his team are committed to providing all our current and new patients a relaxed environment with calm and quality care. Come visit our office and staff!

Our services include but aren't limited to:

To achieve a truly radiant complexion, don't forget exfoliation. Regularly slough off dead skin cells to reveal fresh and rejuvenated skin. Select gentle exfoliators with ingredients that include fruit enzymes or AHAs to keep your skin smooth and glowing. Incorporate exfoliation into your routine once or twice a week, but be mindful not to overdo it. If you choose to use a retinol, keep in mind you absolutely need to be using sun protection with this product. Follow up with a nourishing moisturizer and oils to keep your newly revealed skin deeply hydrated and glowing. Remember to drink plenty of water to hydrate from within, which will also have great benefits for your skin's overall health.

Treatments

In addition to your skin essentials, try incorporating a few extra steps into your routine. Treat your skin to a nourishing mask once or twice a week to deeply hydrate while addressing extra concerns such as skin brightness and elasticity. Don't forget your lips! Our delicate lip area can also be treated with gentle lip scrubs, lip masks and an SPF when heading outside!

Follow these summer tips, enjoy the outdoors and keep your glowing skin healthy!

SMONEĆTEN Campground

On a warm summer weekend our friends visiting from the mainland found the perfect campsite in the shade of fir and cedar trees at SMONEĆTEN Campground, a stop on their cycling tour of the Saanich Peninsula. Located in beautiful Sidney-by-the-Sea, the campground, once known as McDonald Provincial Park, is now part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve operated by Parks Canada, and was restored to its traditional WSÁNEĆ̱ name in 2021.

Amidst laughter and the clatter of tent poles being sorted out, we relaxed at the picnic table with cold drinks, took in the beauty of nature all around, and, gazing up through the canopy of branches at sunny blue skies, felt the busy demands of daily life fade away.

Open mid-May until the end of September, SMONEĆTEN is in the perfect location for vacationers looking to stay close to the ferries with easy access to town amenities and the opportunity to discover everything the area has to offer including hiking trails, farm markets, wineries and beaches. Nearby Blue Heron Park and Lillian Hoffar Park are popular for their open grassy areas, oceanfront picnicking and views of the harbour.

SMONEĆTEN, which means "place of fir pitch" has 43 drive-in sites and six walk-in sites and sees a mix of car campers, RVs, cyclists and backpackers every year. A group campfire area, pit toilets, garbage, recycling and potable water are on site. One of the most stunning features of the campground though is the hand-carved cedar poles and interpretive display where you can see Indigenous art and learn about WSÁNEĆ̱ culture.

A forest trail is accessible from the campground and signs throughout tell the story of the land and traditional uses of plants in the area. Learn about honeysuckle, huckleberry, salmonberry, mahonia, ferns, maple and arbutus. This easy walk is welcoming for all ages. Even if you don't plan to spend the night this beautiful hidden gem is worth exploring.

A PLACE FOR FUN AND FAMILY: North Saanich Freeride Park

Bike parks are a wonderful addition to any neighbourhood: they encourage people to spend time outdoors, help to build a sense of community, and are a way for both kids and adults to make friends and challenge their abilities.

38 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | JULY 2023

Riders at North Saanich Freeride Park are greeted with a variety of tracks and jumps for every skill level, from beginner to expert. The Park is now open for the season, and anyone is welcome to enjoy the inclusive atmosphere of the grounds.

"A lot of youth use the park; it's a great source of exercise," says Kyle White, president of The Friends of North Saanich Mountain Bike Park Society, the not-forprofit that manages and maintains the park. "We work with the District to keep the bike park running; we're a volunteer-led public group," he explains. "We do everything from raising money to digging in the dirt."

In recent years, the group has been able to secure more funding for the bike park. "When I first started, the average amount per year was about $2,000, and now – for the second year in a row – it's at about $30,000 a year! So we've been able to make some pretty dramatic improvements," says Kyle. The new additions include a viewing deck and a trick zone – they've also added some wooden ramps, improved the more

difficult portion of the park for higher skill levels, and redone the "green zone" area, a section that's easier for kids and newer riders.

"We are also looking at some larger projects in the future," says Kyle. "We want to get to the point where we can install an asphalt pump track, so the park is usable year-round." Currently, the bike park is only open seasonally for the summer, until the fall brings too much rain for the dirt tracks to function. "We're hoping for enough funds to keep a portion of the park open year-round."

The park is enjoyed by people of all skill levels and is especially appreciated by families. Father of three Jeremy Beintemas spends at least two days a week at the bike park with his children, who are aged five, eight and 11. "I think the main benefit is the ability to have multiple people at different skill levels – we can ride there for a long time and enjoy ourselves," explains Jeremy. "My older two are quite advanced riders, and the youngest is just getting into it. We can go there as a family, everyone can ride and progress, and we can all be there together."

Jeremy explains that the bike park is different than trail rides, where beginner riders can get frustrated and discouraged, or feel left behind. "This environment is more conducive to a wide range of abilities," he says. "I also think there's a really positive community that's been built around the park. I've been going for maybe four or five years regularly; I've watched some of the younger kids grow up and mature, and become contributors to the park on volunteer days. New riders are always showing up, and sometimes they're intimidated but the regular riders are always there to help."

"We also have a program teaching kids how to make bike jumps safely," says Kyle. "And lots of youth have taken real pride and ownership in the park, getting involved with the community aspect and contributing to their local area – they want to make a positive impact."

"We love it there, it's just a great place," adds Jeremy. "I'm very proud of Kyle for reinvigorating the park over the last couple years; it's made such a huge difference."

4 Tips That Could Save Your Pet's Life This Summer

It's summertime, the weather is beautiful and you're excited! However, like anything in life, there can be too much of a good thing. Over-exposure and underestimation of heat is unfortunately too commonplace, whether human or animal. It can actually take only 10 minutes for the inside of your car to reach a temperature that can cause heat stroke. Heavy panting, excessive drooling, red or purple tongue and gums, racing heartbeat, seizures or tremors, high body temperature, diarrhea, lack of coordination, vomiting, collapse, loss of consciousness and death are all manifestations. However, heat stroke and other medical issues resulting from a location being too hot can definitely occur elsewhere.

We now know the potential dangers, so what can you do to prevent the side effects of high temperatures from harming your pet? For starters, always ensure they have access to fresh water, a cool place to lay whether inside or outside, and are never left inside a vehicle as the temperature rises much faster without the flow of air. Restrict exercise on hotter days, with walks occurring early in the morning or evening instead. To cool your pet, spray them down with lukewarm water, but not ice cold, as you'll also want to avoid dramatically changing the temperature.

You can protect your pet's paws from potential painful skin damage by using a very simple test to determine if it's too hot for them. Place the back of your hand on the surface where you intend to walk and hold it there for seven seconds. Since skin damage occurs quite quickly, if it feels too hot or starts to feel hotter in that timeframe, it is too hot for your pet to walk on! Even at 20° and up, there is always a risk of heat stroke or exhaustion. Certain breeds may still be at risk at lower temperatures so being aware of your pet's breed requirements is key.

We've mentioned heat, but what about water? Water intoxication is also a very real danger. If you've got a dog who loves to swim, or an overly hot day comes your way, although rare, consuming too much water too quickly can lead to low sodium levels which can cause cells to fill up with water and swell. Signs of this can manifest in loss of coordination, lethargy, bloating, vomiting, glazed eyes, excessive salivation, difficulty breathing, seizures and coma. It can even be fatal, especially for smaller dogs. Dogs are recommended to have breaks in between stretches of playing in or with water. Hydrate incrementally, rather than risking over hydration due to the animal becoming too thirsty.

Now, what about when heat meets water? Well, algae poisoning can occur. If your pet ingests this water, it can cause serious health effects, including a potential rash just with skin contact. Watch for warning signage, investigate safer places and be aware that lakes with more stagnant waters are riskier.

Finally, while enjoying mother nature, check for ticks after every adventure. It's a myth that ticks can easily be seen as they are often photographed once already engorged from a feast of blood. They are relatively small, at about 3-5mm, and love to find a host to bury themselves into. Hard-to-see areas such as armpits, behind the legs, around the eyelids, in or around ears and between the toes should be checked. Tick-borne illness can cause fever, abnormal lethargy and joint pain, but if detected at its earliest stages, treatment is very successful. Consulting your veterinarian for the best type of tick prevention and any other breed specific requirements are always a good idea for safe summer fun!

A Safe Environment to Travel: Angel Flight of British Columbia

Angel Flight of British Columbia provides a free and memorable transportation experience for cancer patients travelling to and from medical appointments –including out of the Victoria Flying Club.

The not-for-profit, volunteer-led organization offers free and private flights to and from hospitals for ambulatory cancer patients and children with non-communicable illnesses, alleviating the burden of transportation costs.

Since its first takeoff in 2002, the organization has carried 2,031 people to and from 19 airports around Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast and Metro Vancouver.

Jeff Morris, CEO of Angel Flight, is a former Royal Air Force and commercial pilot. Now retired, he dedicates his time to managing flights, pilots and other operations.

Since becoming involved with the organization in 1999 and taking over as CEO in 2006, Morris has dedicated thousands of volunteer hours while working out of his home in Sidney to ensure every flight takes off smoothly.

"My reward is the satisfaction I get from helping people," he said.

Flights are operated by 29 volunteer pilots scattered across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland in single-engine, four-seat airplanes. Morris added the organization also works with volunteer drivers who transport patients to and from Angel Flight planes at the Victoria Flying Club in North Saanich and the Vancouver International Airport.

In addition to the importance of relieving the financial burden, Morris said it is important to him to provide patients with a memorable experience while flying over British Columbia's scenic landscapes.

"They're not a cancer patient (for the duration of the flight) –they're a passenger in a small airplane," he said.

The experience also offers the added reassurance for immunosuppressed patients who no longer have to rely on planes, buses and ferries where they run an increased risk of catching a virus.

"The last thing they want to travel on is an airplane with a lot of people," Morris said. "(Angel Flights) isn't just saving them anguish and costs, it's providing them with a safe environment to travel."

Summer Activities: Saanich Physio

The summer season brings many opportunities to spend time outdoors, whether you enjoy team sports, hiking, running, swimming, or other activities. As we become more physically active, the risk of injury can increase – we must be careful to avoid shoulder and knee injuries, sprained ankles, golfer's and tennis elbow, muscle strains, stress fractures and other injuries. Luckily, there are many things you can do to prevent strains and sprains. Here are some quick tips:

• Focus on strength, flexibility, and agility: building your core muscles can help prevent injury.

• Stay hydrated and eat healthy meals and snacks.

• Use appropriate equipment for any sport or exercise, including protective gear.

• Ensure you stretch and warm up your muscles before and after participating.

• Be mindful of the intensity, frequency and duration of your activity.

• Make sure to take a rest between sessions.

• Don't overdo it: take it slowly, gradually building up your skill level.

• Consider taking lessons from an expert or professional to learn the proper techniques of your sport or activity.

Below, Scott Simpson of Saanich Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic answers a few questions about summer activities, and how we can prevent and treat injuries.

What are some of the most common summer sports injuries? How can you prevent them?

There are a variety of sports injuries that can happen in the summer as the weather gets better. Generally, there's a tendency to overdo it. Probably the most common injuries we see are back pain, knee pain and shoulder pain. The best way to prevent them is to ease into the activity – but still do the activity that you plan on doing, just at a lower intensity. Gradual, progressive exercise is always the key.

During the summer season, many people take advantage of our proximity to water. Can you describe the benefits of low-impact water sports?

There are a variety of benefits to exercising in water. The nice thing is that the harder you push, the harder the water pushes back, so it has a modulating effect on the amount of force we put through the tissues. In addition, there's no impact forces in the water – so we see that athletes like runners, for example, can exercise in water without the stresses that can lead to repetitive strain injury.

What are the symptoms of golfer's elbow and tennis elbow? How can you treat these conditions?

Golfer's elbow is pain on the inner part of the elbow, and tennis elbow is pain on the outer part. Despite the names, these conditions tend to occur more often with other activities. Given that they are both repetitive strain injuries and that we won't feel discomfort while doing the provocative activity, it's important to build up the load on your tissues gradually. For example, don't go play 36 holes of golf if you haven't played for two years! Perhaps start at the driving range and build up the number of strokes you take over time.

Do you have any tips for how to "warm up" before engaging in summer activities?

A key element when it comes to warm-up activities is to do the activity that you're going to do, just at a lower intensity. Any warm-up should be specific to the activity that you are going to do. It has been very interesting to see the evolution of warm-up in professional sport. Once upon a time, it used to be very much a passive activity like stretching, for example, but now you see athletes doing drills that replicate the forces they're going to put through their body when doing the sport. This concept is strongly supported by research for a variety of sports and activities.

Whether you are new to the area, going through a life transition, or unhappy with your current situation, you will find that Deborah takes a unique approach when working with her clients.

Her 25 years of experience in the investment industry is her guide when working with investors. Deborah realizes that building a strong client relationship is rooted in trust and transparency. The foundation for a strong relationship is ensuring compatibility and effective communication. Investors want to know that their financial advisor is committed to their success and willing to take the time to listen to what is important to help them determine their goals.

It may surprise many to learn that investing is often not about achieving the ‘highest rate of return’, but rather having confidence that their financial advisor understands their goals and will prepare an investment plan to achieve those goals. What one investor considers important, another may not, therefore, goals, plans, and solutions are as unique as the individual, so too should be the portfolio!

Experience matters when it comes to guiding investors through turbulent markets.

Although setting goals, determining the appropriate asset allocation, implementing a strategy, building a portfolio, and monitoring investments are essential to successful investing, the most important factor is the amount of time that the professional spends with the investor. The more investment knowledge and understanding of the markets that an investor has, the greater the chances are for success. When investors are prepared for volatility and understand the emotional roller coaster that can be experienced during market corrections, the less chance they have of making decisions based on emotion rather than discipline and logic.

A financial advisor who has experience guiding investors through these market corrections is an invaluable asset to achieving one’s financial goals.

The Best Outdoor Adventure on the Peninsula:

Farm Experience The Country Bee

Unique and fun experiences can be hard to come by, and when you do find them, they aren’t always kid-friendly. That’s why the owners of Country Bee Honey Farm opened their Farm Experience: to provide families with an adventure outing that allows kids to experience nature and animals. The farm is loaded with a variety of animals you can get up close and personal with.

The self-guided tour allows you to move at your own pace: take 30 minutes to complete the walk, or take two hours! A great way to make the most of the whole Farm Experience is to take an afternoon to enjoy it, and create an unforgettable experience for the kids (and adult kids too!).

We recommend you pack a picnic and all the stuff needed for being outside: sunhat, sunscreen, juice boxes and snacks. When you arrive, head into the store to purchase your wristbands. This is also where you can find farm animal cookies for the kids, or yummy flavoured honey sticks. The store offers a variety of locally-made honey treats, cold beverages and baked goods in the café … great if you don’t feel like packing your own picnic beforehand! And be sure to grab a few bags of food to feed the adorable animals on the tour. Before you head up top, stop at the miniature western town to meet our regulars which include dwarf goats, baby doll sheep and a variety of birds. Don’t forget to check out the observation beehive located in the hollowed-out tree by the pond as well! The road up walks you past acres of sunflowers, wildflowers and buckwheat, all blooming through August and September. Keep going all the way to the back of the farm where you’ll be greeted by an array of animals including a miniature pony, hair sheep, baby doll sheep, pigs, emus, chickens, turkeys, alpacas, rabbits and miniature donkeys. There’s also a barn with baby chicks you can hold!

After everyone’s had their share of animal watching, head into the covered picnic area, have a snack and get the kids to draw a picture of their favourite animal on the farm. Then pay the animals another visit; the kids never get tired of this part!

**The walk up to the Farm Experience requires proper footwear, and could be a challenging adventure for someone with mobility issues, but what awaits is worth the effort if you’re up for it.

JURY DUTY: IMPROV COMEDY & AN ENGAGING STORYLINE

This month's series recommendation invites you to the world of Jury Duty, a hilarious eight-part series that combines delightful improv comedy with plenty of surprises. Created by talented duo Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, known for their work on The Office, this Amazon Freevee production takes the concept of jury duty and transforms it into a ridiculous and engaging storyline.

Jury Duty follows the journey of Ronald Gladden, an LA-based everyman who reports for jury duty at Huntington Park Superior Court. Little does he know that everyone surrounding him, from the judge and lawyers to his fellow jurors, are actually professional actors, and even the trial itself is a sham. Gladden volunteered for the role of juror, having responded to a newspaper ad for a documentary on the juror experience. However, what he unknowingly signed up for was a documentary that revolves entirely around him.

As the series unfolds, Gladden finds himself immersed in a series of absurd events, with each passing day of the trial becoming increasingly outlandish. Throughout it all, Gladden maintains a remarkable level of kindness and compassion, which is captured by behind-the-scenes footage from hidden cameras. This unique premise sets the stage for a series of unpredictable moments that will leave you laughing uncontrollably.

Joining Gladden as a fellow juror is the talented James Marsden (known for his roles in Westworld and The Notebook), who portrays an exaggerated, egotistical version of himself. Marsden's obnoxious behavior and impeccable comedic timing elevate the show's storyline, providing hilarious interactions with Gladden. In one episode, Gladden even assists Marsden with rehearsing his lines for an audition, resulting in an embarrassingly over-the-top performance. Meanwhile, Gladden remains blissfully unaware that he's essentially living in his very own version of The Truman Show. Despite the cast's relentless attempts to challenge him, the comedy never turns mean-spirited, and Gladden's genuine reactions add to the charm of the series.

While Jury Duty offers plenty of laughter and absurdity, it also possesses a heartfelt side. The show explores the bonds that form among the jurors during their sequestration, emphasizing the theme of community and the significance of the people we serve alongside. With its unique blend of hidden-camera pranks and elements of true crime documentaries, Jury Duty delivers a truly one-of-a-kind viewing experience. The series concludes with a heartwarming revelation where Gladden's fellow jurors confess the ruse, showering him with adoration for his sweet demeanor.

Timeless Tunes

We're familiar with the image. A smoky, dimly lit nightclub. A chanteuse steps into the spotlight. Her song begins to transport her audience away from the trouble of the outside world.

Local singer, Edie Daponte, who performs July 9 at Sidney's Summer Sounds Concert, engages her audiences through her vocals and storytelling, all of which pay tribute to and deliver a fresh take on the cabaret performers from a by-gone age.

"It feels good to connect with people. I love acting and entertaining others," shares Edie. "I love to see people laughing, singing and crying."

A dynamic singer, Edie performs numbers in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Her repertoire covers different genres including jazz, bossa nova, blues and Portugese Fado. Like the cabaret and nightclub performers of days gone by, she reaches out and communicates with those listening. A prime example is "Under Paris Skies," a show she wrote which highlights the story and songs of legendary singer Edith Piaf. It was both a challenging and rewarding experience.

"It was my first show at the Mary Winspear, and I didn't know how people would react, but when I sang the last song, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, I just wanted to cry. I did it!" says Edie.

Whether delivering a song that's lighthearted or passionate and whether performing in an intimate club or on the big stage, Edie likes to give her all and create a memorable experience.

"I like to sing songs with lyrics that can provide deep meaning or look on the bright side of life such as Look for the Silver Lining, What the World Needs Now is Love or Here's to Life," she shares. "It's really

important to make eye contact. Sometimes, audience members have tears in their eyes, and I have tears in my eyes! It's a fantastic exchange."

In order to sing pieces that are well known and make them her own, she goes through a process.

"I learn the melody first and the lyrics, and I listen to various different singers perform the song," notes Edie, adding: "It all takes time."

Her love of singing is a thread that runs through her life. As a young girl, she took private vocal lessons and studied at Ontario's Western Conservatory of Music. Music was a constant in her home.

"My parents emigrated from Portugal when they were a young couple, and they played music all the time," she says. "My mom was always singing along."

Most days the music genre played was Portugese Fado, known for its expressive, soulful sounds. It had a big impact on Edie as a child. "The music artist who had the biggest influence in my early days was Amalia Rodriguez," comments Edie. "She definitely had an emotional influence on me."

Evolving sounds and styles continued to shape Edie's musical appreciation in her teenage and young adult days. "My mother had records of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. It was always 'in my ear'," she remarks. "In the 1970s, I listened to songs by Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac and Heart."

For Edie, it was the singer's tone of voice or emotional lyrics that consistently impacted her. She began to experience that impact when she became a performer herself. "At age 15, I joined my first band. It

was a quartet, and we played at weddings and corporate events," she says. "I really enjoyed singing."

After a long career in pharmaceutical sales, Edie finally retired about 10 years ago. An opportunity offered by Donna and Bill Phillips of Beacon Landing (now RIVA) prompted her return to professional singing, and since then, she has never looked back.

"With my sales work, I travelled a lot, so it was too difficult to commit to musical gigs," notes Edie. "I did a fundraiser gala, performed at wineries and private parties and embraced all of this in my 50's."

Through the years she has worked with various musicians including Atilla Fias, Karel Roessingh and Damian Graham and played a variety of venues. Currently, along with the very talented musician and her longtime collaborator, Joey Smith, she performs in Sidney at RIVA or St. Paul's United Church, at Victoria's Oswego Hotel, and Government House as well at various entertainment spots in Courtenay, Qualicum and Parksville. Edie is currently writing new songs to add to her collection which includes Little Town by the Sea and Sliver of Time and plans to record a new album soon.

While Edie enjoys crafting her songs, it's the live performance experience that she relishes.

"I'm having a whole lot of fun," comments Edie. "I am grateful to my community and the audiences that encourage me."

With each song, she might tell a different story and sing it in a different style, but when Edie steps up to that microphone, she wants to carry the listener along with her every step of the way.

Health Goals to Focus on Instead of Getting a "Summer Body"

As the warmer months fast approach, it's common for people to focus on achieving a "summer body." However, rather than fixating on appearance alone, it's essential to prioritize overall well-being and adopt a more holistic approach to health. By shifting our focus to more holistic goals, we can enhance our physical, mental and emotional health, leading to a happier and more fulfilling summer season.

Cultivate a Balanced and Nutritious Diet. Instead of resorting to crash diets and restrictive eating patterns, focus on nourishing your body with a balanced and nutritious diet. Emphasize whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Strive for moderation rather than deprivation, and savour the vibrant flavours of natural, unprocessed ingredients. Fuelling your body with the right nutrients will not only help you feel energized but also contribute to long-term health.

Prioritize Regular Physical Activity. Rather than working out to achieve a specific body shape or size, make physical activity a priority for its numerous health benefits. Engage in activities that you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, dancing, swimming or cycling. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week to strengthen your cardiovascular system, boost mood and improve overall fitness. Remember, consistency is key, and finding joy in movement is more important than adhering to strict exercise regimens.

Embrace Mindfulness and Stress Reduction. Managing stress is crucial for overall well-being. Instead of focusing solely on physical

aspects, prioritize your mental and emotional health. Incorporate mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises or yoga into your daily routine. These practices can help reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and promote a sense of calm and balance. By nurturing your mind, you'll find yourself better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Get Sufficient Sleep. Adequate sleep is often underestimated, but plays a significant role in our overall health. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a bedtime routine that promotes relaxation, such as avoiding screens before bed, creating a peaceful sleeping environment, and practising a soothing ritual like reading or taking a warm bath. Quality sleep enhances cognitive function, boosts immune function and supports physical recovery.

Focus on Internal Markers of Health. Shift your focus from external validation to internal markers of health. Pay attention to how you feel rather than how you look. Notice improvements in your energy levels, mood, strength, flexibility and overall vitality. Celebrate small achievements along your health journey, such as completing a challenging workout, preparing a nutritious meal or managing stress effectively. Developing a positive mindset can significantly impact your well-being. Remember, true health extends beyond appearance and embraces vitality, happiness, and well-being. Embrace these goals, and you'll enjoy a fulfilling and healthy summer season and beyond.

CENTRE FOR PLANT HEALTH: Planted & Poised for the Future

There's something new growing out of the landscape in Saanichton. Like a healthy plant it is rooted well, but it needs space and vital elements to grow.

Since 1912, the Centre for Plant Health (CPH) has served to safeguard plants and the health of people and environment, while supporting economic growth. However, while it's rooted in a rich history of agricultural research and has flourished in its dedicated

scientific work, the Centre is replacing its buildings and updating its equipment and processes to allow it to continue to grow and thrive on the national and international science landscape.

"There are over 40 buildings, most built between 1912 and 1961. They continue to degrade due to age and climatic conditions," shares Jacqueline Booth, CPH Project Director. "The new facility will be state of the art."

The impressive structure currently being built follows the Laboratories Canada's guidelines which provide facilities with a long-term strategy to strengthen federal science. The new CPH will also serve as a guide for other projects being reconstructed or updated nationally.

"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Public Services and Procurement Canada, working with other federal science partners, decided that the CPH renewal project would apply, to the extent possible, the Laboratories Canada guiding principles, making it a 'pathfinder project'," says Emma Dickinson, Senior Communications Advisor, CFIA. "Lessons learned from the CPH pathfinder will be applied to other Laboratories Canada projects."

The only post-entry quarantine testing facility in Canada for grapevine, tree fruit and small berries, CPH is a hub for research excellence, as Andrea Kalischuk, CPH Lab Director, notes: "Scientists on site have been attracted from international communities and are world-renowned virologists who are published in reputable peerreviewed journals. The Centre represents Canada on international

working groups like the International Plant Protection Convention Secretariat and Euphresco, an organization that supports phytosanitary (plant health) research."

Whether it's in design, planning or construction, the new CPH is being developed in a dynamic way paying attention to environmental, scientific and community relationships. The building, a joint venture between WSP and Architecture 49, will reflect sustainability and innovation. It will be carbon neutral with geothermal heating, automated shade lighting and advanced energy and water metering. Outside there will be onsite storm water management and charging stations for electric vehicles, bikes and golf carts. Waste generated in the construction process will be recycled. Landscaping will embrace native species.

In addition, there has been collaboration with the local First Nations. Excavation is done with W̱SÁNEĆ cultural excavation monitors assessing the land for archeologically sensitive material. The project team worked with the W̱SÁNEĆ leadership council to gain a history of the site and information about local flora and fauna. An interesting and eyecatching front lobby and exterior panels are planned that will feature First Nations art depicting Coast Salish stories.

To advance and broaden the research capabilities of CPH, the new facility will boast new design features and upgraded technology. It will be an open office space concept and offer a more adaptable laboratory design, multi-purpose boardrooms, and specialized rooms where climate change simulations can be done.

"The new facility will have several environmental growth rooms that can be used to simulate weather extremes," notes Andrea. "By increasing our scope from plants to also include insects and a greater range of environmental conditions, the CFIA Centre for Plant Health will be better positioned to address climate change related plant health risks."

"The newer technology means faster testing," adds Andrea. "The insect research is critical. Insects show up here first before the rest of Canada due to our micro weather conditions."

With the sophisticated genomic-based information management and technology which examines plant health at the DNA level, it opens the doors for scientists to make significant advances in this field. The result will positively impact local and provincial business.

"The research and diagnostic testing delivered at CPH will have the potential to decrease plant quarantine waiting times, helping businesses get their products to market faster and more economically," remarks Emma.

In addition, the CPH staff will be working in one place, allowing valuable and productive collaboration with each other and with other organizations like the University of Victoria, Natural Resources Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Large conference rooms – one of which boasts a wrap-around deck overlooking the property – will open up opportunities to host large international meetings.

For over a century, CPH has served as a preeminent facility to protect Canada's plant resources and grow the agriculture and agrifood sector. Come early 2025, like a plant that is ready to bloom, the Centre for Plant Health will open and begin a new phase as a world-class facility for diagnosing and researching plant health.

You had me at fruit pies (from the TV show King of the Hill ). My love for baking pies all started during my childhood while watching my mother cook. Although she made traditional Japanese cuisine, she also made a mean blueberry pie using a secret recipe rumored to be passed down through generations of master sushi chefs. Her only change to it was to omit the wasabi.

My passion increased during university when my housemates took turns making dinner. The main course was typically a miserable, shoesole pork chop accompanied by emaciated grey peas that clattered around the plate. However, whatever the main course lacked, the desserts were over-the-top expressions of our inner Julia Child. My specialty was fruit pies, but the other offerings were Strawberry Bavarian (renamed Strawberry Barbarian after tasting it), Chocolate Mousse (called "Moose" after strategically placing two marshmallow eyes), and Baked Alaska (which sprung a leak while it cooked, prompting us to shout: "Captain Kirk, she's gonna blow!").

During these formative years, here are some do's and don'ts I picked up along the way.

• Don't make a pie while watching sports.

• Don't use a hammer and spatula to flatten the dough instead of a rolling pin.

• Do check your face and hair after doing anything with flour, especially if you are rushing out to buy more flour.

• Don't (and I mean don't) wear a fuzzy sweater while making pastry.

• Do let the pie cool down before tasting it.

Believe it or not, there is an American Pie Council (the APC). I'm

The Life of Pie

guessing it's something like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a watchdog agency that establishes quality standards (like pie filling to crust ratios and things like that). Their role as pie promoters is crucial, as pies are important to life as we know it and critical to the existence of Western culture. I, for one, am thankful for the APC.

Speaking of cooking up wonderful things, during sunny summer days the sun can whip up a "sea breeze" along the coast. As the sun bakes the earth's surface, the land heats rapidly while the ocean remains cool. The warm land heats the air above it, which in turn rises as it is less dense than the cooler air around it – just like a hot-air balloon (or a good mousse). With warm air rising over the land, cool air from over the ocean moves sideways onto the land to replace it, resulting in a cool, refreshing on-shore wind called a "sea breeze." Although it can be T-shirt weather inland, you may need a sweater near the shore.

Well, what will the South Island weather recipe be for July? With a dash of this and a sprig of that, the outlook favours a warmer and drier-than-normal month.

No matter what the weather, during July every part of the natural environment is in full swing and bursting with life. Even though the blender of our busy, modern world can leave us stale and bland, do a random act of pie-ness and invite your friends and family to a picnic by the ocean. While enjoying their company, drink in the warmth of the sand, the fresh sea breeze and the sound of breaking waves. It's a slice of paradise that will nourish your soul.

Picnic Perfect

It's a glorious time of year: ideal for dinners al fresco, barbecues at the beach or picnics in the park. It's so satisfying to pull flavourful goodies from the cooler or hamper, lay them out and let the sunny hours lazily unfold.

Sometimes, instead of relying on standard picnic fare, I look for some summer inspiration. The Muffuletta, a New Orleans sandwich, is tailor made for the season. It's not only impressive looking, but is also so easy to create. You can spend a bit more time and make the bread and the olive salad, or you can buy all of the ingredients and throw it together. It will taste amazing either way and look so darn great. Add some fruit and cookies and you're simply, fabulously, picnic perfect.

Picnic Perfect Muffuletta

1

(purchased or homemade)

1 to 1 ½ cups olive salad (purchased or homemade; I like lots)

450-500g (or more depending on personal preference) of choice of hams: capicola, deli ham, prosciutto, Genoa salami, mortadella

150g sliced mozzarella cheese

150g sliced provolone

Slice round bread in half horizontally. Place both sides on flat surface. If bread is very puffy, dig out a bit of loaf in the middle. On bottom put half the olive salad. Start from centre and spread it out, leaving about a half inch around the edge.

Layer on fillings: meat, meat, cheese, meat, cheese. Add rest of olive salad. Place top half of bread over olive mix; press down lightly to help bread absorb juices. Wrap; rest in fridge for a bit with plate on top to meld flavours.

Bring to room temperature before serving; slice into wedges. You can place sandwich, before slicing, on baking sheet and warm in 350° preheated oven for 6-8 minutes.

3 ⅓ cups flour

2 ¼ tsp fast acting yeast

2 tsp salt

1 tbsp sugar

¼ cup olive oil

1 ¼ cups water, room temperature

2 tbsp white sesame seeds, untoasted

Put flour in large mixing bowl, add salt, yeast. Make sure each is on opposite sides of bowl. Stir each in gently with finger. Be careful not to let yeast and salt touch; the salt can kill or stunt yeast. Add sugar, oil, half the water. Stir by hand or with dough hook until mixture starts to come together. Keep stirring; gradually add more water until flour is all incorporated and sticky dough forms.

Turn out dough onto lightly floured surface; knead about 10 minutes or until no longer sticky. Or use mixer and dough hook on low and knead for about 10 minutes. To check if ready, dough needs to pass windowpane test. Check by stretching a bit of dough between thumb and forefinger of each hand. If it's translucent in places and doesn't break, it's ready. If it breaks, knead one more minute, check again.

Add about 2 tsp of olive oil into large mixing bowl. Shape dough into ball; turn dough in oil to coat. Cover bowl with plastic wrap; prove at room temperature until doubled in size (about 1 ½ hours). Once dough has doubled, punch down to get rid of any air pockets. Place on prepared baking sheet (I use parchment so it doesn't stick). Shape into flat disc about 9 inches around.

Spritz top of dough with little bit of water, rub it onto surface. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, gently press them into dough. Cover dough loosely with plastic wrap; prove again at room temperature until doubled, about 1 hour. It's ready when it springs back quickly when prodded with fingertip.

Before loaf has proved, preheat oven to 425°. Remove plastic wrap; bake 10 minutes at 425°. Then lower temperature to 400°; bake another 15-17 minutes until loaf is golden brown. Let cool before slicing.

You can make dough the night before, then prove in fridge overnight. Shape into a loaf, prove, bake as directed.

4-5 small pickled onions

2 tbsp capers

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 tsp dried oregano

¼ tsp pepper

2 tsp lemon juice

2 tbsp olive oil

Drain the green olives, kalamata olives, giardiniera, pepperoncini, pickled onions, capers. Place in food processor along with garlic, oregano, pepper, lemon juice, olive oil. Pulse until coarsely chopped, refrigerate until needed.

Brentwood Bay Music in the Park Returns

It all started 25 years ago with a few friends and an idea. Their newly created non-profit society had just produced the very first Brentwood Bay Festival in June of 1998, and they were looking for their next challenge.

"We saw an opportunity to create a weekly community event that could bring families to Pioneer Park for an enjoyable evening of music, food and fun," says Brentwood Bay Community Association (BBCA) President Ginny Alger.

The summer of 1999 saw two concerts produced … from the back of a flatbed truck. Audiences loved it, and the following year five weekly concerts were produced. Subsequently the current schedule of seven concerts was established. As audiences grew, and two temporary plywood stages were outgrown, the need for a permanent, covered stage became clear. A multi-year fundraising and construction program was undertaken by the BBCA, creating the beautiful outdoor stage which was then donated to the District of Central Saanich.

In 2018 the Grand Opening concert featuring Barney Bentall saw one of the biggest crowds ever in the park. Since then, many of the visiting entertainers have said it is the nicest outdoor community stage they've ever played on!

The 2023 schedule continues the tradition of assembling a wide variety of musical styles, with an emphasis on original material, especially with a "rootsy" flavour. "Our goal is to emulate the incredible success of Courtenay's annual Vancouver Island Musicfest" says BBCA Talent Co-Ordinator Leslie Gentile. "We have a smaller venue and a much smaller budget, but we try to book interesting and eclectic bands that might not show up anywhere else."

Come and be part of the fun in Pioneer Park, every Wednesday evening from July 5 through August 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Food trucks are on-site, or you can bring a picnic.

July 5: The Smoking Hot Toasters & The Butterhorns. A mainstay of the Vancouver blues and R&B scene since the 1980s.

July 12: Pretzel Logic Orchestra. Steely Dan tribute band and labour of love.

July 19: The Radio Grande. Back with a full band, the Grande creates a cool '70s country-rock vibe.

July 26: Sarah Smith. This bluesy-roots rocker is known for her powerful stage performance.

Aug 2: Big Little Lions. Juno winners – a blissful marriage of new folk and sophisticated pop.

Aug 9: Shaky Ground. Victoria's favourite party band returns, bringing four decades of classic hits.

Aug 16: Black Angus. Traditional and contemporary Irish, acoustic roots and West Coast Celtic.

TRAVEL SMART

With Covid hopefully now a fastfading nightmare, the global travel industry is rapidly approaching previous highs. After a three-year hiatus, many of us are keen to resume travel, often overseas to European destinations.

My wife and I joined the trend, having recently returned from six weeks in Malta and Prague. As is my habit, I intentionally kept an eye out for money-saving tips that I could pass on to travellers among you, my readers. Hence the variation in theme this month.

USE OF ATMs

While travelling, many of us prefer to use local cash for most transactions – in this instance, Euros. This minimizes the risk of credit card compromise, is preferred or even required by some merchants and occasionally even results in a lower price.

The easiest way to obtain cash in local currency is to use one’s debit card at a local ATM. Since your home bank will usually charge $5 per transaction, it is best to do this only for significant withdrawals. Across the street from our Malta apartment was a convenient EURONET ATM. Shortly after our arrival, I accessed it to withdraw €500. This translated to a total CDN cost of $838. I then continued around the corner to a local bank’s ATM, withdrawing another €500. This time, the cost was only $763 – a saving of $65.

ATMs, EURONET in particular, are in thousands of “convenient” locations, designed to lure the unsuspecting tourist. Avoid them. The premium they charge is exorbitant and easily circumvented.

BOOKING LONG-STAY ACCOMMODATION

I will use our Maltese apartment to illustrate an opportunity for major savings when booking long-stay accommodation. When the owner receives a reservation through a major booking website, they will typically pay 18% of the total to the site; the party making the booking pays another 3%. The total cost of this unit is thus about 21% higher than had the accommodation seeker been able to book directly with the owner. Since this was our third long stay in this apartment, we were well acquainted with the owner and booked directly. We not only saved the 21%, but also received a further reduction due to our multi-week booking.

For Prague, we also dealt directly with a new-to-us owner of 18 high-quality units throughout the city. Always wary of scammers, we acted on the recommendation of satisfied friends. In this case, after several chats with the owner he did not even require a deposit – only an electronic handshake that we would honour his cancellation policy.

By all means, do use booking websites to gather information on suitable accommodation in the location in which you are interested. But do check further with friends and acquaintances for recommendations they may have. They will always be happy to put you in touch with the owner. In fact, should you ever wish a superb long-stay option in either Malta or Prague, feel free to email me, and I’ll happily provide the contact information for either or both owners.

Changing Magreth's Life

Although there were nearly 60 other children in her classes as she progressed through elementary school, Magreth was a bright student who hoped that her father, a subsistence farmer in rural Tanzania, would be able to find the funds necessary to allow her to continue on to secondary school. These hopes were dashed when her dad, walking home from his fields, was hit and killed by a passing truck when Magreth was in sixth grade.

The family struggled on. Magreth, with her siblings, helped her mother in the fields after school. They could survive; just. But when Magreth did well in her government-set exams at the end of Grade 7 and was offered a place in the nearest secondary school, there was no way the family could afford the costs involved: fees, uniform, texts and writing materials.

Magreth then learned that there was a place called CHES House in the nearby town of Katesh. CHES stands for the "Canadian Harambee Education Society." It's a Canadian NGO based in Surrey, with offices in Tanzania and Kenya. CHES's mandate is to cover secondary education expenses for bright girls whose families can't cover school costs.

Magreth applied and was accepted. Although she had to walk an hour each way to school every day, she did so well during her four years at secondary school that CHES sponsored her to continue through two more years of high school. This provided her with university entrance.

Magreth anticipates graduating with a degree in biochemistry in November this year and she looks forward to a career in medical research. Her sponsors, who live on Salt Spring Island, are justifiably delighted with her success.

CHES was started by Lorrie Williams, a Canadian teacher who taught in Kenya in the early 1980s. Sponsors pay $600 a year (hopefully for four years) which covers all expenses related to education for selected girls. At this time nearly 600 girls are sponsored in the two countries. CHES now needs new sponsors as many of those who signed up with Lorrie many years ago are sadly no longer with us.

All sponsorship funds are used to support the girls; other expenses are covered by separate fund-raising initiatives. No Directors receive a salary and CRA rates administrative expenses at 2%.

Sponsors can be a person, a family or often a group (reading, sport, church, or otherwise) and donors are provided with a receipt for tax purposes. If interested, visit www.canadianharambee.ca or email the office at canadianharambee@shaw.ca. Feel free also to contact Chris or Catriona Harker, CHES directors who live in North Saanich, at 250656-9229 or chriscat@pacificcoast.net. Photo courtesy Chris Harker.

WELCOMING NEW PATIENTS!

This marks the 20th year that I have been practising general dentistry. I have worked in private practice, in hospital and in remote First Nations communities. I enjoy all aspects of general dentistry, with a special interest in oral surgery and pediatrics, but most of all I enjoy meeting people of all ages. I belong to the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, the BC Dental Association and the Canadian Dental Association.

I grew up in a small farming community in Manitoba, and came to Vancouver Island in 1992 to study at UVic. With a degree in Biochemistry, I then went on to study dentistry at UBC. I made my way back to the Island in 2009 and have been a proud North Saanich resident since 2012, where I live with my husband, our three children and a rescue pup, Coco.

Born and raised in Victoria, I’m so happy to call this city home. I took my dental prerequisite courses at UVic before studying dentistry at UBC. I strongly value gentle dentistry and put empathy, kindness and thorough evaluation at the centre of my care. My practice philosophy is all about making the dental chair a comfortable and successful place for you! I’m constantly expanding my practice through continuing education and have additional qualifications in many areas including neuromodulation therapy using Botox (for both therapeutic and aesthetic purposes) and Invisalign.

When not at the clinic, I love baking complicated desserts, walking the Lochside Trail, and spending time with my husband, Austin.

June Meeting

Book Club

There may be nothing more exciting for passionate readers than a book about words. This month found us deep inside the "scriptorium" of Pip Williams' debut historical fiction novel The Dictionary of Lost Words.

Young, motherless Esme is permitted to spend her days beneath the tables at which her father works as a lexicographer, helping to compile the Oxford English Dictionary in the early 20th century. As some of the paper slips that contain the proposed words and their meanings fall from the table, Esme collects them, thus piquing her interest in words … and inspiring the dictionary she will eventually compile herself.

Author Pip Williams was intrigued by the fact that a certain word – bondmaid – had been omitted from the Oxford English Dictionary. She wondered what other words went undocumented and why Dr. James Murray, OED editor, and his team of lexicographers would make these decisions. Was it because these words related to women or to the poor and uneducated? Or because words mean different things to different classes and genders of people?

With several real-life characters providing the bones of the story, Esme matures and experiences the societal events of the era: the bold actions of the suffragette movement, the difficulty and shame of bearing a child out of wedlock, the sudden absence of male employees as they went to serve in WWI, and conscientious objectors and PTSD. The ambitious historical scope took the story from what many readers found a slow and overly descriptive start to a surprisingly quicker-paced finish. We appreciated the concise characterizations, especially that of Mabel, the rough, uneducated market vendor who intrigued Esme with her wealth of female-centric and often risqué vocabulary.

As Esme's word collection increases, the question of the maledriven compilation of the dictionary becomes critical. Esme, herself now a lexicography assistant, has her words rejected either because they are unimportant to men, or because their usage by a male cannot be proven. One reader cleverly suggested that situating young Esme under the table, where the cast-off words fell, mirrors the place of women in early 20th-century intellectual institutions, and in society in general.

There was near unanimous appreciation of the book despite our wish for a more polished writing style, and it was pronounced entirely recommendable.

Working Together:

Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation and Shoreline Medical Society

In 2018, the board members of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation made the decision to expand the organization's vision and mission beyond the hospital walls, leading to the establishment of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation (SPHHF). Recognizing the profound impact of comprehensive healthcare on the community, the board took a pivotal step in supporting the development of Shoreline Medical Society.

During the 2018/19 annual fundraising campaign, the Foundation directed its efforts towards addressing the shortage of family doctors and its consequences for the community and the hospital. The campaign received remarkable success as the community rallied together to show their support for healthcare on the Peninsula. With the Foundation's backing, Shoreline Medical Centre opened two clinics in Sidney and Brentwood Bay, attracting 25 physicians and providing thousands of patients with access to much-needed healthcare services on the peninsula.

Despite this incredible achievement, the ongoing growth of the Peninsula's population and the retirement of physicians have perpetuated the crisis of physician shortage. As seen through media reports, the shortages have further intensified, affecting the Emergency Department at Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH). Similar to numerous communities across Canada, the shortage of family doctors remains a critical issue, underscoring the continued importance of SPHHF's efforts to support physician recruitment and retention within our community.

Says Dale Henley, Co-Chair of Shoreline Medical Society: "Shoreline Medical Society's model has proven appealing to primary care providers who are drawn by the opportunity to care for their patients and serve the community. Although systemic challenges persist within Canadian healthcare, what sets the Saanich Peninsula apart is the remarkable collaboration between community members and physicians. Together,

they not only fulfill shared aspirations but also drive transformative change within the broader healthcare system."

As a rural-based practice model, Saanich Peninsula Hospital relies heavily on local family physicians to staff the Emergency and Acute Care Departments. This system allows physicians to oversee their patients throughout their hospital stays while working within the hospital setting. Dr. Chris Dowler, Medical Director of the Shoreline Medical clinic in Sidney, explains that while this approach does draw physicians away from the clinic some of the time, it provides physician staffing to the hospital and also acts as a powerful attraction for new doctors considering joining the peninsula or providing locum services. Consequently, SPH's Doctor of the Day program serves as a valuable recruitment and retention tool for Shoreline Medical.

"The Foundation takes great pride in its continued support of Shoreline Medical Society, having recently made another significant contribution to help the Society provide vital primary care access in our community. This support not only benefits the residents of the peninsula by improving access to primary care but also alleviates some of the pressure faced by the SPH Emergency Department," says Shelley Mann, SPHHF Board Chair.

SPHHF is honoured to collaborate with our local hospital and physicians within the peninsula and Gulf Islands. With the community's ongoing support, we pledge to remain part of the solution to current and future healthcare challenges. Together, we can build a healthier future for all!

TRADE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

: Hooked on Cooking

Sumiko Chan is on her way to enjoying a successful career in the culinary world, and it all started by taking a foods class in her ninth-grade year at Parkland Secondary. For someone who never had a favourite class and didn't really enjoy school, Sumiko said that taking this class was "a real game changer" for her. After spending time "in a professional style kitchen, I just fell in love," she says. She went on to take cafeteria classes in Grade 10 and from that moment on she was hooked. Sumiko did everything she could to spend as much time in the kitchen as she could to discover her future career path.

Colleen McNamee, the career teacher at Parkland, was quick to recognize Sumiko's interests and told her about the dual credit culinary program at Camosun College. This program allows students to earn high school credit while earning their professional cook Level 1 credential. Sumiko loved the idea and the program. She will be able to earn credit for graduation while doing something she is motivated and passionate about.

In her own words, Sumiko shared that although she was motivated she found the program very challenging but also very rewarding. "I learned a lot about myself and how I learn. It was very intense for me adjusting from a high school learning environment to a college level one." She is also quick to add that "Chef Wendy and Chef Heidi along with all the instructors were huge supporters and of course Ben Haber the SIP student advocate at Camosun."

The program not only enhanced Sumiko's culinary skills but "also interpersonal skills like effective communication and emotional regulation. Learning how and when to speak up and how to communicate your needs to an employer was one of my biggest takeaways other than my practical skills." The growth in Sumiko's confidence was evident in her willingness to participate in the Skills Canada competition where she placed second!

Sumiko's mom is so happy that her daughter completed the program as it "gave Sumiko an opportunity for completing her first year apprenticeship, thus preparing her for working in the culinary field before and upon graduating high school. The dual credit program will provide her a head start and enable her to access better paid employment and exciting opportunities like working abroad.

"This program gives kids a chance to learn in a more hands-on, practical way. I think it's a great alternative for kids to excel in education and am thankful these programs exist. It's nice to see creative ways to help kids enter into the next phase of their lives. I'm very proud of Sumiko's accomplishments and am excited to see what the future holds for her! And, of course, having a chef at home has been a real added bonus."

When the culinary program ended in December, Sumiko didn't want to wait until February to start her English 12 that she needed for graduation. Instead, she enrolled at ILC-Saanichton and graduated this June, winning many scholarship and awards to help her reach her goals of becoming a Red Seal Chef! We are so proud of Sumiko and are excited for her future.

Fuelling Your Summer: Boost Your Energy with Nutrition

With summer break now here, parents everywhere are wondering how they are going to find the energy to keep up with the chaos of it all. With so much going on, it's always a good idea to maximize your nutrition to keep your body ready for the adventures ahead. This is where understanding how to harness the power of nutrients and distributing your calories can come in. It's also a great opportunity to learn about your unique needs and those of your kids, and it can be used for more than just summer break.

In simple terms, calorie distribution is the breakdown of the different nutrients (carbs, fats, and protein) you eat every day. Each of these nutrients is broken down in your body to be used as energy, with each nutrient varying in how much energy it can offer. We need to stop being afraid of calories, and instead understand what they can do. Overall, the body prefers carbs because it is much easier to convert them into energy. The key point for carbs is to be mindful of which kind you are eating. Complex carbs are the best because they provide a more sustainable energy source and are nutrient rich. Some examples include brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, starchy vegetables (sweet potatoes, corn), and high fibre vegetables (asparagus, bell peppers, carrots).

Keeping refined carbs such as white bread, pasta and rice to a minimum ensures you are getting the benefit and avoiding foods that are void of nutrients. Most people should aim for four to six grams of carbs per kilogram of body weight per day, which is about 250 grams.

Fats are the second-best energy source because of their high density per gram. The reason they don't take first place is because they actually

consume quite a few important bodily resources in the process. This can be especially detrimental for those who are active; during periods when physical movement is high the body will divert resources such as oxygen, energy, and blood to working muscle, the heart and the lungs. This is an effort to sustain the activity and takes away from the digestive processes which are often saved for period of rest. When there is too much fat consumed before activity, it can sit in your stomach and cause digestive upset and bloating which leaves you feeling sluggish. A good amount of fat to consume is 15 to 30% of your total dietary intake per day. Focus on mono- and polyunsaturated fats such as avocado, sunflower and olive oil, fish and nuts.

Protein is not an ideal energy source and is used as a last resort. This is because when protein is used for energy, it means that muscle tissue has been broken down to provide the nutrients needed. It is used when the body has run out of carbs and fat to use instead. The loss of muscle directly impacts how much carbohydrate energy your body can store as well, so keeping muscle tone up is beneficial overall. It is best to ensure you eat enough protein so your body can maintain muscle and help you functioning at your peak. Aim for lean proteins such as chicken, fish, tofu and Greek yogurt. Most people need around 0.75 grams per kilogram of body weight a day. This amounts to about 45 to 55 grams per day.

Now that you know what these nutrients do, you can experiment with different combinations and see how you feel. On days that are more activity heavy, try to prioritize complex carbohydrates and on rest days, protein. Just always make sure to have fun with your food and don't stress too much about it!

No Need to Water Your Lawn This Summer!

Did you know water use in the Capital Region almost doubles in the summertime?

We are lucky to rely on the Sooke Lake Reservoir to supply us with safe, clean drinking water at the turn of a tap; however, on Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands our summers are typically hot and dry which puts pressure on our drinking water supply.

Using water wisely, we can conserve our drinking water and remain resilient against "heat domes," wildfires and other climate events. Using less water does not only benefit the human residents of the Capital Region, but also plants, vital habitat and endangered species.

Choosing to let our lawns go golden is the best way to conserve water. Lawns naturally go dormant during summer months and return to green with the fall rains. If you do choose to water your lawn, consider these water wise tips:

1. Adjust your watering schedule following the CRD's Stage 1 Watering Schedule.

2. Use micro/drip irrigation systems for watering trees, shrubs, flowers and veggie beds.

3. Water your green lawns a maximum of one inch (2.5 cm) of water per week in the driest conditions.

4. Practise the cycle and soak method: watering in short cycles with time in between to allow water to soak in and reduce water waste.

5. Weed often and add mulch around your plants to reduce evaporation, keep soil cool, reduce competition and add nutrients back into the soil. For lawns you can leave grass clippings to act as a mini mulch.

By conserving water during summer months, we can lower our water and energy bills, protect fish habitat in the Sooke, Charters and Goldstream Rivers, and support drinking water quality by maintaining higher water levels in our primary drinking water supply area.

We are privileged to enjoy some of the highest quality drinking water in the world – maintaining this critical resource requires each of us to make water wise choices each and every day!

SEASIDE HOMES

Janice Henshaw | photos by Leah Gray
JULY 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 79

It was a tough time to build during escalating inflation, so Michelle shaved her wish list, removing a custom-built metal staircase and choosing sliding glass doors that open into the backyard garden instead of a glass wall system. In-floor heating, however, was not an option for elimination. She said her feet were always cold in the circa 1920s cottage that formerly presided on the lot.

Michelle sold the cottage she had owned for 25 years to make way for her new home. It was moved to a farm in North Saanich, which involved taking down hydro lines and diverting traffic. Michelle said the eight-hour night move was a spectacular event with a huge crew and many people out watching. "I've been very adventurous and done many things, but this was one of the most exciting events of my life; it was an incredible experience to see my beloved cottage taking a road trip!"

The great room has nine-foot-high ceilings, engineered beams, and two seating areas separated by a kitchen/ dining area. The informal side has a gas fireplace, large comfy couches and a TV. The more formal seating is at the other end, where modern meets the old world. Visiting friends commented on how the design resembled a hotel somewhere, and from that day on, the family called their home "Hotel Somewhere." Accents of orange, artwork, framed line drawings and canvas drapes add to the room's character. Michelle says the heated floors are exquisite and her favourite part of the new house.

80 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | JULY 2023

The kitchen space is streamlined and minimalist with slab cabinet doors, blue-grey cabinetry (Benjamin Moore Amsterdam), brushed gold Emtek hardware, Brizo faucets and concrete pendants. The 11-foot island is topped with quartz and features a one-sided waterfall edge which Michelle describes as her curatorial oddity. "I always consider composition and geometry, and asymmetry creates a fun and unique element." She eliminated upper cabinets to create a hotel lounge-like feel, keeping the room light and airy. The 30-inch double-oven range has six burners and weighted brushed bronze control knobs. Michelle created the backsplash with wall paintings and protected them with glass. She prefers their minimalist look instead of tiles interrupted by grout lines.

The butler's pantry houses the stacked washer and dryer, cabinets, a sink and the main fridge, which Michelle considers a monolith better hidden away. "Its placement is spectacular because we can do all the prep work in the pantry." That kind of thinking, she says, comes from staying in hotels. "I was sitting in a beautiful hotel restaurant in Europe, having dinner across from the bar. And the room was set up just like this, with seating areas on either side. I kept looking at the bar and thought: this is what I would like when I design a house."

There are four bathrooms – two full bathrooms and two powder rooms. The openconcept main ensuite is full of natural light; it has a white soaker tub with a view of the ocean, a glass shower with multi-spray heads, custom floating cabinets with undermount lighting and concrete-like quartz counters. They add to the feeling of elegance and serenity, earning the nickname "The Spa" for Michelle's space. Her daughters, involved with the design aspects, chose elegant black and lush teal for their bedrooms. Borrowing from the hostel concept, their shower room is separate from their shared double-sink bathroom, which has a private toilet room.

The extra-wide stairway leading to the rooftop deck is covered in an entertaining barcodestriped wool carpet. "Stairs provide more than merely a function of moving people from one story to the next; I think of them as a journey; I think of everything as a journey," says Michelle. The deck has a view of Robert's Bay, catches the cooling breeze off the sea and provides a lovely private area to relax or entertain.

84 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | JULY 2023

Along the front of the house there is one more very special room – an art gallery.

Michelle is not in a rush and she is enjoying the ongoing process of displaying her sculptures, be they plaster, concrete or glass. The room is full of natural light and is sure to be quite spectacular when finished. Outside, the grounds are also taking shape, being designed with art in mind and along the lines of hotels with respect to privacy, lighting, shrubs and trees.

Builder Jim Town said that the duplex was an exciting project to build. "Michelle was very invested in every aspect of the home, from design to finishes, and she had a very clear idea of what the home needed to be and the guts to get edgy with it, making the building side more interesting." Jim said he was really happy about the metal Luxx siding, which was a first for his company; it is made from Galvalume Coated Steel, the highest grade of corrosion-resistant coating available.

Jim said, "We are very proud of this home and hope the homeowner and her family make many happy memories in it. " I am sure they will.

Returning for its 37th anniversary in 2023, the Sooke Fine Arts Show is Vancouver Island's longest running, juried fine art show and one of the region's premier summer arts events. From July 29 to August 7 the 10-day art show and sale transforms Sooke's SEAPARC arena into a stunning, 17,000-square-foot gallery. More than 375 works of original art will be on display, accompanied by activities for all ages. Visitors can also enjoy daily artist demonstrations, talks, guided tours, live music and a gift shop.

Thousand of visitors attend each year to view the works of over 250 established and emerging artists in categories such as painting, sculpture, photography, fibre, ceramics and hand-formed jewelry. Artists are awarded prizes totalling over $12,000 in acknowledgement of their outstanding creativity and skill. Over 300 volunteers work behind the scenes throughout the month of July to create the gallery. Everything they do – from helping construct and light the gallery, hanging and placing the artworks, greeting guests and running the activities – reflects the character of the community that inspired the first show in 1986.

Sponsors are also key in making the event happen. "Local businesses of all sizes, supporters from all levels of government and community-minded people make a huge contribution and we are grateful for their continued support," says Terrie Moore, Executive Director of the Sooke Fine Arts Society. "This event creates a valuable connection between our community of artists, volunteers and appreciators of art. None of it would be possible without the generosity of our sponsors and volunteers," adds Moore.

The Sooke Fine Arts Show is unveiled on July 28 with Purchasers' Preview Night, an exclusive, ticketed event that allows seasoned and new art collectors and purchasers first access to view and purchase their favourite unique artworks. Guests at the Preview Night will enjoy beverages and live music with local contemporary jazz band "Broke and Blue." Tickets are available for $45 at www.sookefinearts.com. IMPROMPTU

We found the whole day so uplifting and a positive experience. As business owners in Sidney, it especially made us feel proud to see all ages and lifestyles full of love and support. There were so many people wearing PRIDE stickers and buttons, waving flags and wishing others Happy PRIDE. It was a truly heartwarming day. There was lots of appreciation for this new and celebratory event. LOVE is LOVE and the community of Sidney really did show their PRIDE colours and support.

Last Word from the Editorial Director

"When life gives you lemons …" was going to be the theme of my "Last Word" this month. I had a whole citrus-infused riff, with pithy puns, but I find I'm just not quite ready to laugh at myself yet. I'm normally good at shaking off any urge to feel sorry for myself, but honestly, I've been having a week!

I keep my life busy because I like to be involved in lots of things. It brings me joy to work and volunteer and have hobbies and friends, and of course all the family responsibilities and pleasures too. But I recognize that my schedule doesn't have a lot of give in it, so when things start to unravel I feel the impact all over the place. Despite planning and preparation, life events got in the way of a big goal, and I've been feeling disappointed and blue.

Sue always says that she believes "things happen for a reason." I don't know that I quite feel the same, but it is definitely true that when you're ready to look for a solution, or support, there's always lots of it out there. As I sat down to proofread this bumper July issue, the first words I read were from our longtime writer Jo Barnes. This month she "was reminded about the value of learning in life. We might make a few mistakes along the way, but we also grow and discover new approaches and skills. In the end, our lives become richer." OK, that's helpful.

Two paragraphs later Heidi and Coleen wrote about "the power of perseverance and determination," and immediately after them, from Harninder Jacquot: "our time is precious so I hope you take a moment to pause and bring your family together." Hmmm, these words were making all kinds of sense. The page finishes with Kristen Roden reminding us that "our lives have gotten quite busy and we sometimes forget to slow down and enjoy our beautiful Island."

I'm not saying Seaside Magazine is the cure for all problems but, reading through the variety of stories and seeing all the different lives – each filled with their own setbacks and challenges but also charms and triumphs – it really made me feel better. Maybe I am ready for that big glass of refreshing lemonade!

Have a wonderful summer – whatever your plans!

At Sidney All Care, we are fortunate to be located in beautiful Sidney by the Sea. We are proud to partner with the Cycling Without Age Society to provide our residents with a fantastic riding program where they get to be outside, have the wind blowing in their hair and enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty of Sidney from the safety of a trishaw bicycle.
