Florida’s Mote SEA attraction comes with brand new gift shop The Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium has debuted its new Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA) in Sarasota, Florida. Opened on Oct. 8, the 146,000-square-foot facility is located in Sarasota’s Nathan Benderson Park and is twice the size of Mote’s facility in Sarasota’s City Island, which is continuing to operate

as a Mote research facility.

The educational attraction also comes with a new gift shop, managed by Event Network. Store Director Sandi Finefield says the look of the store flows seamlessly with the aquarium itself.

“The gift shop was designed as an extension of the first floor, which is all about the sea,” she says. “Color schemes all match what we have on the first floor — we have wavy designs throughout.”

The new Mote SEA gift shop is slightly smaller than the City Island store was. Because of that, Finefield says she had to be selective about what merchandise to keep and what to eliminate from the old store when planning for it. Since Mote tends

to attract locals, Finefield says she made sure she put locally made souvenirs front and center in the new gift shop.

Some popular local brands include Emerson and Friends apparel based in Clearwater, Florida, as well as Florida-based Mang Apparel, which is conservation focused.

Finefield adds, “My biggest goal for us is to give an experience — guests come for an experience. They do not know our store is run by Event Network; we’re an extension of the aquarium. I want to surpass their experience from the aquarium into the gift shop. That’s my goal, along with educating my team and making sure they know the features and benefits of the products.”

Silver Streak releases Pawparrazzi line

Silver Streak has debuted Pawparrazzi as a new pet line featuring pet charms, pet necklaces and pet collars. The line is designed for pets (and their owners) who also enjoy “sparkle and style.”

“Pawparrazzi celebrates the bond between people and their pets — it’s a fun, fashionable way for retailers to grow sales,” says Owner Roger Booth.

Booth shares that this marks the first time the company has offered a pet line. “We are a group of pet lovers, and we saw a need and decided to fill it,” he adds. “We market these as great impulse buys both because of the price and the uniqueness of the products.”

All of the pet charms are created by hand using real stones at Silver Streak’s facility in Tempe, Arizona, ensuring that no two products are alike.

Vintage tee raises $2.3 million for otters at Monterey Bay Aquarium

When Taylor Swift appeared at “The Life of a Showgirl” official release party wearing a vintage Monterey Bay Aquarium T-shirt, the gift shop team took notice — along with Swifties following the artist online. Within hours, the 1990s-era otter tee was trending across social media, from @taylorswiftstyled to Reddit.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium quickly responded to the viral moment by relaunching the shirt as a limited-time thank you gift for donors contributing at least $65.13, a nod to Swift’s lucky number 13. The funds support the aquarium’s Sea Otter Program and other ocean conservation efforts.

The fundraiser brought in more than $2.3 million in less than two days, doubling the aquarium’s initial goal. The campaign’s success demonstrates the power of nostalgia, celebrity influence and values-driven merchandise — a case study for souvenir and gift retailers.

The Bishop Museum announces new retail partnership The Bishop Museum in Honolulu has formed a new partnership with the Hawaiian Council to enhance the museum’s retail space and elevate its connection to Hawaii’s creative economy. Founded in 1889, the Bishop Museum is Hawaii’s State Museum of Natural and Cultural History and serves over 200,000 visitors annually.

In July, Hawaiian Council assumed operations of the museum’s gift shop and renamed it Shop Pacifica by Nā Mea Hawai’i. The organization plans to continue to refresh the space and showcase Hawaii-made and designed products with displays.

Council, says Shop Pacifica by Nā Mea Hawai’i is a 1,300-square-foot store, located in the first building that guests enter when they arrive at the museum and purchase their admission. The gift shop features a wide range of products that are designed and made in Hawaii.

Since Hawaiian Council stepped in to manage operations, Mukai says there have been incremental updates made to the gift shop to prevent any disruption to daily operations. He says the museum gift shop is gradually adding new fixtures to better showcase products and provide an elevated shopping experience.

“Hawaiian Council is also working closely with Bishop Museum to curate items related to its exhibitions

throughout the year and to highlight Bishop Museum Press titles,” says Mukai. “Importantly, the shop continues the legacy started by Nā Mea Hawai’i by showcasing authentic, locally made products while also helping to build pathways toward greater economic independence for Hawaii’s makers.”

People across all 50 states are sure to want to celebrate this milestone all year, not just on the 4th of July.

Gifts and souvenirs that support USA 250 are expected to be in high demand. Destination retailers will want to prepare now to make sure they have souvenirs ready that will help people show off American pride.

Travelers might be more keen to travel around stateside to celebrate this year. You may want to even combine your selling efforts with other USA-based attractions and create a USA 250 passport for your area, encouraging people to visit these other destinations this year.

People reflecting on American history also might be drawn to retro items. Nostalgia is expected to be big this year, so have souvenirs ready that appeal to the past! Try stocking things such as collectible spoons, fingernail clippers, mini-viewers and figurines.

PATRIOTIC PRESENTATIONS In addition to having souvenirs tied to USA 250, destination retailers should call out these patriotic finds in store presentations. Planning display color schemes should be simple: Use red, white and blue.

You can also have fun by adding American icons to your patriotic mix, such as the Statue of Liberty, The Gateway Arch or Mount Rushmore. Your shoppers will connect to these icons, and this will hopefully translate into sales.

SHARE THE CELEBRATION Make sure to highlight your patriotic merchandise and celebratory displays on social media. Encourage your social media followers to visit your stores to collect your USA 250 products. Perhaps you can showcase a different patriotic product each month to draw attention to your offerings all year long. You can even finish the year with a special USA 250 holiday ornament.

SHIFTING FIVE STRATEGIES SHOPPING FOR A SUCCESSFUL VALUES IN 2026 SEASON

ouvenir and gift shops come in every shape and size. There are high-volume tourist stores, tiny artist-run boutiques and everything in between. The core souvenir categories haven’t changed much over the years, but shopper expectations have changed.

What’s trending in 2026 isn’t a new list of products, it’s the way people want these products to look and feel.

More shoppers expect their souvenirs to connect to the places they are visiting.

DEMAND FOR HYPER LOCAL

Local isn’t enough anymore. Shoppers want the specifics: the pier, the trail, the neighborhood nickname, the mural, the landmark that only insiders know about. Products built around these hyper-local cues outperform generic name-drop merchandise.

Shoppers are also drawn to hyper-local snacks and treats, from artisan snacks and local chocolates to tiny hot

As an example, shoppers have always loved witty humor, but they are over the busy novelty items. What’s trending is a clean look with humor: think simple layouts, regional jokes and humor that feels more boutique than kitschy.

On top of looking good, more people expect that products do good as well. Sustainability is expected today, and people want upgraded sustainable goods: recycled textiles that feel premium, natural fibers, minimal packaging and earth-toned palettes that read “quality,” not “compromise.”

EXPERIENTIAL AND STORY-DRIVEN

The story behind an item is starting to matter as much as the item itself. Shoppers love knowing who made a souvenir and why it matters. This shift favors indie retailers.

Tourists also want personalization that ties directly to their trip, dates, locations, trail mile markers and coordinates. Incorporating these elements into souvenirs help these items to become part of the trip experience, not an afterthought.

The demand for souvenirs is as strong as ever, and shopper expectations are rising right along with it. People are choosing pieces that feel intentional, memorable and connected to place. When you curate with these shifts in mind, you don’t just sell more — you stand out. SGN

nce a simple souvenir, drinkware has exploded into a lifestyle statement and a crucial accessory. The market data reflects this shift. According to a Research and Markets report, the global drinkware market was valued at $35.1 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $60.4 billion by 2034.

For retailers, the growth in the drinkware category represents a growing profit opportunity.

ALL IN THE MATERIALS The modern drinkware aisle offers consumers a dizzying array of choices beyond simple plastic and glass. Retailers

GRAND CANYON CONSERVANCY’S RETAIL OFFERINGS ARE BOTH INTENTIONAL AND GIVE BACK TO THE ICONIC NATIONAL PARK.

ith its beautiful, expansive views and miles of hiking trails, Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most visited of the 63 U.S. national parks. According to the National Park Service, just over 4.9 million people visited the Grand Canyon in 2024. Arizona’s iconic mile-deep canyon is a natural marvel that many people enjoy seeing at least once in their lifetime.

When people come from all over the country and abroad to visit this park, a stop in the South Rim Visitor Center for information as they start their trip is usually a must. Upon completion of their canyon exploration, those same visitors often stop back for a souvenir at the visitor center’s Grand Canyon Park Store.

Operated by Grand Canyon Conservancy, the Grand Canyon Park Store’s team of 40-plus employees serve more than just souvenirs to the millions of people who visit every year.

“We’re an extension of the park,” says Duncan Petrie, associate director of operations at Grand Canyon Conservancy, explaining that he and his team are prepped to provide hiking and travel advice to visitors.

Petrie says he and his team regularly provide guests with details on how long different hikes might take, trail suggestions and tips on other nearby attractions.

In addition to being great hosts, Petrie says the Grand Canyon Conservancy’s gift shops provide necessary funding for the park. In 2024, Grand Canyon Conservancy brought in $17.8 million in retail revenue, with at least 10% of the revenue going back to the park. Buying a souvenir magnet or T-shirt from one of the conservancy’s gift shops ultimately gives back to park functions.

“The Grand Canyon’s Junior Ranger program is still free, and retail helps to fund that,” he shares. “We have a brand new cultural demonstration center at Desert View, and retail helped to fund that. A bridge at the park was damaged by floods, and retail helped to pay for the repair of the bridge.”

Retail revenue has also helped to fund essential services, such as an on-site ambulance and other resources for emergency rescue efforts at the park.

“I love the mission and working for a nonprofit, supporting the park,” Petrie says. “Nature is a really important thing to protect. It’s a healing tool for a lot of people.

Although we’re in a gift shop setting, realistically what we’re doing is raising money for the park, providing funds to support it for the future.” www.sgnmag.com

MORE SPACE FOR MEMENTOS Originally known as the Grand Canyon Natural History Association, the Grand Canyon Conservancy began in 1932 as a park partner organization. The conservancy opened gift and book shops at the park as a way to support it.

In the past, these shops primarily focused on books and educational materials. Today, Petrie says the gift shops still focus on offering educationally relevant items, but the product mix has truly expanded to incorporate more mementos — T-shirts, hoodies, plush, magnets and even some hiking essentials.

Lately, apparel is a popular category for Grand Canyon Conservancy’s gift shops. A main section in the South Rim Visitor Center store features rolled shirts and a rounder for hanging garments, with some additional apparel items

cross-merchandised with other items to showcase different collections in store.

Petrie says traditional name-drop T-shirts do well, and some hikers especially enjoy quick-drying T-shirts that they can wear on their hike. All the apparel includes the Grand Canyon name drop on it.

Headwear is also a hit with customers of all ages, with the conservancy gift shops featuring a mix of traditional “dad” caps as well as trucker hats, beanies and bucket hats. Magnets are also a popular souvenir pick at these park stores.

On top of expanding its souvenir mix, Grand Canyon Conservancy has also recently expanded its physical footprint at its main South Rim store.

The nonprofit oversees six gift shops around the Grand Canyon National Park, with five on the South Rim and one on the North Rim. “The main store on the South Rim does about 57% of my business,” he explains. “That’s our newest building. We built it in 2000.”

More recently, Petrie and his team saw an opportunity to add 300 square feet to the 4,000-square-foot space, with a goal of improving merchandising presentation at the shop.

The nonprofit completed the buildout in the fall of 2025.

“It gives us the ability to bring in more products,” says Petrie. “By creating more space, we can add more interpretive marketing and information next to products to tell more of a story.” www.sgnmag.com

SINCERE SELECTIONS Storytelling is important with all merchandise at Grand Canyon Conservancy’s gift shops. Petrie explains that all products must be approved by the National Park Service’s chief of interpretation, ensuring that every souvenir aligns with the park’s mission and features themes and motifs that truly relate to the park.

Many customers enjoy products with the canyon imagery and other geology themes. Petrie adds that some items feature native wildflowers and cacti that can be found in the park, along with a few of the animals that reside there such as mule deer and mountain lions.

Products made by local tribal artisans can get the green light to be sold in Grand Canyon Conservancy gift shops, with tribes native to the park including Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, Las Vegas Band of Paiute Indians, Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, Navajo Nation, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, The Pueblo of Zuni and Yavapai – Apache Nation.

“We’re also trying to expand our options of indigenous products,” says Petrie. “We were able to partner with a Hopi artist and use Several bins of small plush animal toys that are native to the region appeal to kids visiting the conservancy’s South Rim Visitor Center store.

PROVIDING SUPPORT In 2025, national parks across the U.S. faced concerns about budget cuts. Petrie says retail’s role in providing for the park certainly increases in importance anytime the federal government cuts back on funding for the parks.

Then in July, the Dragon Bravo Fire spread throughout the Grand Canyon National Park and led to the closure of the North Rim. Several buildings on the North Rim, including a Grand Canyon Conservancy store, were destroyed because of the fire. The conservancy reports that the fire was contained as of Sept. 29, 2025, and there has been limited access to the North Rim since then. Petrie adds that he’s unsure as to whether the store and other buildings on the North Rim will all be rebuilt.

The federal government shutdown in the fall also impacted parks across the U.S. Mindy Riesenberg, chief communications officer for Grand Canyon Conservancy, says the Grand Canyon Conservancy helped to provide $48,000 in funding to ensure that essential Science and Resource Management projects on the North Rim could still be completed.

While the North Rim was temporarily closed, the South Rim remained open the entire time and was unaffected by the Dragon Bravo Fire. www.sgnmag.com

Coming to the rescue During the summer 2025 season, the Dragon Bravo Fire spread across the Grand Canyon, particularly affecting the North Rim. A lightning strike on July 4 ignited the fire, which spread across the North Rim by July 10. The fire intensified and all National Park Service, Grand Canyon Conservancy and Aramark staff members located at the North Rim were evacuated on July 11. As a result of the fire, several buildings were destroyed, including the Grand Canyon Conservancy’s North Rim Visitor Center complex.

Then in October, the federal government shutdown also affected operations across the national parks, including the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon Conservancy says it provided $48,000 in funding to essential Science and Resource Management projects and to cover National Park Service staff time on work related to this fire that could not be delayed.

“Our mission has always been to support Grand Canyon National Park, a role that becomes all the more essential when the park is facing challenges like the government shutdown,” says Liz Silkes, CEO of Grand Canyon Conservancy. “These projects protect the canyon’s ecosystems, cultural heritage and water quality — efforts that can’t be paused without consequence.

shipwreck confirmed by its own bell. Only two survivors from a 1717 pirate disaster. Artifacts still emerging from beneath 30 feet of Cape Cod sand. The Whydah Pirate Museum is built on facts that sound like fiction — but every piece of the story is documented.

As the only authenticated pirate shipwreck ever found, the museum blends scholarship, science and retail. Artifacts recovered from the site, first located in 1984, anchor the narrative as staff archaeologists show how coins, tools and personal items are freed from centuries-old concretions.

The gift shop extends this work with merchandise tied to the ship, the dig and the continuing effort to uncover a mother lode that still lies beneath the sand.

Meredith Katz came on board as a manager in 2016 while her husband was helping with the museum build-out. Formerly a substitute teacher, she was steering into summer when the opportunity landed and has been anchored there since then.

Q A

What sets the Whydah story apart from other pirate narratives?

The biggest thing is authenticity. We’re home to the world’s only verified pirate treasure. Other wrecks have been found, but none had the telltale artifact — the ship’s bell inscribed 1716. The Whydah began as a slave ship, was overtaken by Sam Bellamy’s crew and wrecked in a brutal storm off Wellfleet. It’s real history, not folklore.

The museum is a life’s passion for its founder Barry Clifford, a diver whose dream was to find pirates’ treasure along the Cape. He almost gave up until one last dive in 1984 with his buddy, John F. Kennedy Jr. It was a lucky day.

The next year they unearthed one of three anchors belonging to the shipwrecked Whydah, and finally the bell. Dives continue today.

Your gift shop is compact but packed. How do you approach buying?

I’m very intentional. I don’t buy every pirate item out there. We focus on quality and pieces that tie back to our mission. What are some of your bestselling items at the gift shop?

Foam swords from Rhode Island Novelty are safer than plastic and absolutely our No. 1 seller. Our custom “booty bags” are also huge with kids: little sacks filled with plastic coins, gems, rocks and rings. We also sell treasure chests in different sizes, telescopes, wooden ship kits, toy pistols from Design Masters and beautiful Folkmanis puppets. There’s a scarlet macaw, along with whales and sharks, which are big on the Cape.

Of course, we offer pirate hats in different styles and colors and it’s usually the first thing people grab and put on to take pictures.

For some destination retailers, finding and promoting American-made gifts and souvenirs is central to their mission and presents a growing opportunity.

or almost a century, Evelyn Hill Inc. has provided hospitality services and retail management operations to some iconic American destinations: the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Baltimore-based Fort McHenry.

American-themed souvenirs are everywhere throughout these gift shops — Statue of Liberty replicas are plentiful in both the Statue of

Liberty and Ellis Island gift shops, and star-spangled flags are on just about everything in the Fort McHenry gift shop.

“Fort McHenry is the home of the Star Spangled Banner,” explains Jose Sepulveda, Evelyn Hill’s vice president of retail, adding that the battleground inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem.

“The focus there is 100% on the American flag and its history.”

“Our foods and personal care categories are entirely made in the USA, and the pet treats we carry are all made in the USA,” she says. “The made in the USA options we offer has grown some in recent years simply because we have narrowed and deepened a lot of our selections, and imports were more often cut from our lineup than USAmade items.”

Some retailers have had luck with American-made apparel and jewelry. In Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Sweet Bay is known for its Maine- and New England-made gifts, from Town Pride apparel to locally made jewelry and decor. Manager Cathy Rayle estimates that 80% of the store’s products are made in Maine or the USA. She says tourists appreciate that the store has a curated selection of products made in Maine or New England that they can take home.

“We have people come from all over the world, and they want something made in Maine or made locally,” Rayle says.

In Ashford, Washington, the Longmire General Store at Mount Rainier National Park is full of American-made finds, from local jams and confectionery foods to local pottery. gifts and souvenirs — a table full of USA-made drinkware, pins and stationery; a rack of USAmade charms; and shelves stocked with local candies and food.

“A single sign featuring the American flag is far more effective than explaining it verbally,” says Simpson. “By creating a clear display of Made in America products, we’ve made it easier for guests who want that local connection to shop intentionally.”

AMERICAN SOLUTIONS Finding products that are made in America can be challenging at times, but it’s a challenge worth taking when it aligns with a store’s mission. Even though Evelyn Hill Inc. can’t source 100% of its merchandise from domestic sources, Sepulveda says it’s part of the store’s mission to do that when it can and when it makes sense.

“We operate in these attractions that people come to visit that have American history, so I think it’s important to offer American made,” he says. “It can be tough, but when we find someone who can make something locally and if it resonates as a souvenir, we have a conversation.”

He stresses that Evelyn Hill tries to find souvenirs that are both high-quality and align with what customers want, which sometimes involves price. Although the Statue of Liberty store’s variety of American-made goods is limited, Sepulveda says he makes sure some of the top-selling souvenirs are made here, such as the

To make sure that most of these statue replicas are USA made, Sepulveda says Evelyn Hill purchased a factory in 2019 in Queens, New York, to make poly resin statues in-house that were up to the store’s standards and made right in the city. The statues range in size from 4-inch replicas to 24-inch replicas, with a couple of 4-foot display statues.

Local connections Trying to find new American-made vendors can be difficult, but some destination retailers have come up with fun ways to meet and connect with new vendors and artisanal makers.

Melinda Simpson, director of operations for Rainier Guest Services, buys merchandise for the Longmire General Store in Ashford, Washington. She says she will sometimes attend community events near the park to find the perfect gift and souvenir vendors.

“There’s a sweet spot between small artisans producing limited quantities and large companies that supply mass-market goods,” she explains. “To find vendors in the middle, we stay tapped into the local community — attending art festivals, browsing local boutiques and following makers on social media.”

Simpson adds that once she finds a good local vendor, that vendor often connects her to more resources who can provide locally made merchandise.

Hill likes to make a statement in its Fort McHenry gift shop with American flags that are made in the USA. “Focus on the items that customers want that are made in the USA and grow those lines,” Sepulveda advises. “And if you can, make a statement. Make it big, make it loud, make it colorful and playful, and I think people will gravitate toward it, understand it and learn it.”

MARKETING MADE HERE Along with making a statement in the store, Moretz says it’s important to make a statement about USA-made merchandise outside of the store as well through marketing efforts.

“People are looking for items that are made in the USA, and we highlight our vendor partners quite often on social media, through our blog posts and via our emails,” says Moretz. “Our catalogs/gift guides also make note of items that are manufactured in the United States.”

Simply expressing excitement over the USA-made products is a selling factor at Sweet Bay. Rayle says she and her team are always trying to tell the stories behind their products with customers.

“One of the things that works so

well for us is myself and a couple of the people who work here are so passionate about the things that we have in the shop,” says Rayle. “Enthusiasm and passion are key. We’re enthusiastic about having Maine artists, and that enthusiasm spills over to the customers.”

Simpson shares that thoughtful merchandising within the store goes a long way to marketing the store’s USA-made and locally made items.

Longmire General Store focuses on calling out its American-made and locally made items within displays that Simpson says are thoughtfully laid out.

“Our displays are curated to reflect a wide range of interests and budgets, all while staying true to the park experience,” she shares of the Longmire General Store.

The store is also a big champion for the items it has that are made domestically.

“We also prioritize vendors who champion environmental causes.

Buying local reduces environmental impact, particularly from transportation,” she says. “Because our store represents a national park — and a national treasure — it’s important that we support U.S. businesses.” SGN

quish, squeeze, sell, repeat — stuffies are a crowd favorite, and not just for the younger set.

“Plush is timeless, and in any store it brings in a sense of fun,” says Savannah Rodriguez, co-owner of Doodlet’s in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Plush is a dynamic category to source for a kid-at-heart, and Rodriguez is willing to take a chance (at least once) to find out what sizes and themes will invite laughter, attachment and then, adoption.

And with plush, there’s a spoil-

“We want to offer people who are here on vacation something soft and squeezable they can cuddle up to and would not necessarily find at home,” says Carrie Jorgensen, owner of the shop.

“In the summer, sales are really driven by the kids, and I can hear them make their way to the plush and find something they just love,” she says.

Stuffies are like storytellers at Doodlet’s with themed plush next to related souvenirs and gifts.

ARRANGING AN ABUNDANCE “Plush vendors are always thinking of new styles, colors and sizes — it never gets old,” says Rodriguez of exploring a gamut of stuffies, though sticking to some staples. Axolotls are “an easy yes” and “mermaids are probably forever,” she says.

Still, some variety is key, she says. “This way, we can target a larger customer base,” says Rodriguez, noting that many adults are just as inclined to purchase a plush cutie for their purses as kids who are adding to a hammock of softies at home.

Customer engagement and some casual eavesdropping helps the owners determine which stuffies to stock.

A boatload of plush in a single display can feel overwhelming. This is why Doodlet’s plush displays are “lenient,” says Rodriguez, who gravitates toward storytelling presentations rather than lumping plush into a big show of squish.

“A container with 50 different stuffed animals can be easy to overlook vs. one animal sitting next to a book that will catch your eye better,” Rodriguez says.

In Marrero’s Florida shop, popular motifs include sea turtles, manatees and mermaids sourced from Emerson and Friends and Mary Meyer. Celebrating four-footed family members gives customers another reason to splurge on plush from Douglas. Great Giftsby carries a variety of dog breeds.

At Lazy Days of Longville, Jorgensen must leverage limited square footage, so she doesn’t stray too far from local animal themes. Aside from turtles and loons, plush arranged on themed tables and among children’s books includes common woodland-lake characters.

“We like to round out plush to include other local wildlife like deer, skunks, porcupines, ducks, otters,” she relates, relying on vendors like Nature Planet, Wild Republic and The Petting Zoo. Some motifs breach the philosophy of staying local because they simply sell, namely unicorns and mermaids.

Meanwhile, sea turtles are a bit of a sticking point. They’re not the kind that paddle along in Minnesota lakes. “I’m on the hunt for turtle plush that is more representative of the ones you find here, and for now I’m bringing in sea turtles because that is what’s offered,” says Jorgensen.

“They’re a soothing, sensory experience and people seem to know and recognize the brand,” Jorgensen says.

SIZE MATTERS Big, small or stock them all? Providing stuffies in small-to-large options provides price point choices and a variety of purposes for plush. But many souvenir and gift retailers report success offering plush suited to hold in the palm, clip to a bag or tuck into bed.

Compact purchases are driven by preference and cost. Meanwhile, easy-to-handle plush can result in larger bag size.

“People really liked the plush keychains this past year and kids like to attach them to their backpacks,” says Jorgensen.

Rodriguez says “tiny plush that fits in your palm” moves quickly. “But we like to carry a variety of sizes because we find this allows us to target a larger customer base.”

Having a variety of sizes allows customers to buy a little something just because or splurge on a more substantial present. Rodriguez says, “While we typically gear plush toward children, we have adults who come in and are buying with someone else in mind.”

LOOK AT THAT, CUTIE Storytelling helps to sell plush. If a plush pairs with a book, pair those two products up in a display. “It catches the eye,” says Rodriguez.

Collectible by design Pint-sized finger puppet sets offered piecemeal or as a collection give visitors returning to a destination a reason to keep purchasing plush.

And something small is appealing for conscientious spenders.

“People want more custom collectibles they can only get in that location,” says Danica Adams, sales coordinator at Soft Stuff Creations.

For example, a Wings of History playset from Soft Stuff Creations includes an airplane hangar and World War II plush finger puppets.

Each item is retailed separately. An option to buy a set or a piece can help generate repeat transactions, she adds.

Plush collections are also a way to celebrate different cultures.

Soft Stuff Creations has partnered with indigenous artists such as Bill Hellin (Tsimshian) and Debra Sparrow (Coast Salish), with an expanding portfolio of represented tribes.

The latest Cherokee Nation collection launched in collaboration with Mary Beth Timothy includes seven finger puppet designs representing the Cherokee’s seven clans.

Adams says, “We are hoping to grow these collections while moving toward more meaningful plush.”

Jorgensen also prefers a theme-based presentation strategy for plush. For example, during the annual Turtle Fest, a front-and-center display combines plush turtles of all sizes and styles with other gifts in a turtle motif such as stickers, cards and notepads.

At the same time, turtles and loons are positioned in the children’s toy area at the back of the shop. “You can find plush in both places,” says Jorgensen, noting the importance of accessibility for young shoppers. “We put plush on lower shelves or in baskets on the floor so they not only see it, but they can also grab it and hold it to make sure it’s the one they want.”

Just as plush is a fun-loving purchase and goto gift, the category also creates nostalgia. Kids hang on to stuffed keepsakes indefinitely, and adults reminisce about a favorite plush animal they took home as a child.

Jorgensen says, “Plush is one more way people are creating memories as a family.” SGN

The newly renovated store curates an assortment of stuffies that speaks to the aquarium’s muchloved residents — Myrtle the sea turtle, North American right whales and lots of penguins.

The thoughtful menagerie offers guests a way to take home and love a memorable sea animal.

Store Director Lisa Zajonc, who spent 32

years managing Disney stores, translates her experience in a retail world that’s all about making memories to the aquarium shop she oversees.

Plush is personal, she points out.

“My daughter, who is now 24, still has the seal she got with her grandparents when she came to this aquarium as a little kid,” relates Zajonc, adding that cuddly creatures easily squish into visitors’ luggage, and inventive accessories (outfits!) give customers ways to play with plush.

Axolotls are having a moment, and the New England Aquarium is embracing customers’ interest in this curious amphibian. The long and lean snake-like stuffy is displayed hanging from racks that showcase its shape and invites guests to wear it like a boa.

Sharks, assorted fish and sea life round out the mix. And for Boston visitors heading out on whale-watch excursions, a distinctive plush option creates a powerful connection.

“We carry a right whale because it’s specific to our location,” Zajonc explains, adding that other whales are also in stock but not in the spotlight like this species, which can be spotted in the Boston Harbor.

“For this specific whale, our partners ensure the plush is designed with integrity and includes the features of the actual animal,” says Zajonc.

This interchangeable costuming line — a take on a Build-A-Bear-style experience — gives families a fresh way to customize a classic souvenir. “Most kids have a plethora of plush at their home, so parents like to add something a little bit different,” she says.

MERCHANDISING MISSION Aligning with the aquarium’s conservation mission, the shop upholds sustainability commitments that extend to sourcing plush.

As an Event Network store, it participates in the company’s Plastic Stops Initiative which means ensuring plush fabrics adhere to guidelines. While this can limit some categories like plush keychains that might have plastic fobs, it also opens the doors for creativity and gives www.sgnmag.com

Visual reminders throughout the store tie products to purpose. A sign reading Care & Protect is a backdrop for an extensive plush corner, wall displays lined in wire baskets that allow customers to see all the fluff stuff.

With presentation, Zajonc brought a signature expectation with her from years of working in Disney retail: every plush should greet guests face-forward.

Meanwhile, maintaining the experience requires thoughtful replenishment. When the fixture was installed, Zajonc’s team calculated its capacity. “We work with vendors to make sure our baseline of inventory is always at a certain level so we don’t ever run out,” she says.

From penguins to right whales, every stuffed creature is a soft ambassador for the ocean. And as Zajonc puts it, the magic of plush is its staying power in a gift shop environment and beyond.

The California Surf Museum shop blends nostalgia, storytelling and coastal culture. hat do The Beach Boys, Gidget, sun-bleached surfboards and an indie oceanside San Diego museum have in common? They all helped shape the modern surfing story — one California Surf Museum has spent nearly four decades preserving.

The museum’s mission — to preserve, protect and share surfing’s heritage for future generations — runs through every exhibition, artifact and event. But it also lives in a surprising place: the compact, carefully curated gift store that has grown into the museum’s second-largest revenue source.

Executive Director Jim Kempton, a former surf journalist and longtime historian, says the museum store’s 80 SOUVENIRS, GIFTS & NOVELTIES MAGAZINE JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2026

success propels the institution’s sustainability and growth.

When the museum moved into its current home in 2008 — part of Oceanside’s revitalization — the grassroots nonprofit finally had space to build a true museum store.

“We were able to put in a really serious gift shop,” Kempton says. “And we brought in someone who understood retail.”

That someone was Camille Cacas, the museum’s retail director and buyer, who has shaped the store for the past 11 years. She had spent a life’s career in retail, owning a Hallmark store, working with independent drugstores and serving as a rep at LA Mart. She saw an ad on Craig’s List when the museum decided to focus on retail.

CURATING A COLLECTION The 600-square-foot gift shop is modest in size but diversely stocked with layers of gifts and souvenirs, from artwork to apparel and handcrafted coastal goods.

It’s also one of the most efficient corners of the museum, generating consistent year-over-year growth and playing a meaningful role in funding programs, staffing and the exhibits.

Much of the store’s success began with the museum’s graphic identity: a distinctive surfer silhouette created through a community design contest. The logo appears across bestselling apparel produced by Impact Design.

“We sell apparel like any coastal museum would,” Cacas says. “But put our logo on it, and the value doubles. During COVID, when gift shops were struggling, we still had people coming in because they wanted the shirts.”

Visitors gravitate toward the soft, beach-ready fabrics in short sleeves, long sleeves and French terry hoodies. Rotating graphics — “Happiness Comes in Waves,” “Salt Water Heals Everything” — keep the assortment fresh without straying too far from what members expect.

With more than 400 museum members, maintaining familiar favorites is just as important as introducing newness, Cacas says.

For kids, the bestseller is instant: “A Shark Ate My Homework.”

Hats, mostly from American Needle, are mainly classic baseball cap style. “Our audience leans older,” Cacas says of a demographic that’s more interested in traditional headwear versus trucker hats, though the shop does carry some.

If there’s one product category that Cacas can count on, it’s impulse items tied to both aesthetics and portability. Paper Sharks tea towels — lightweight, lint-free and customized with the museum’s name — have become go-to souvenirs for their portability. While Ipswich Bay soaps, wrapped in labels featuring VW vans, Woodies and retro surf girls are another reliable seller.

“We probably have 30 to 45 shirts at any time,” Cacas says. “People come here every summer before checking into their hotel to see what we’ve got. It’s become a thing.”

Visitors come from Brazil, Portugal, France, Japan — and from local beach towns up and down the coast. Many come for exhibits. Others stop in just for the gift shop. Most leave with both an appreciation for surf history and a purchase that supports the museum, according to Cacas.

And as the California Surf Museum approaches its 40th anniversary — just shy of the 50-year mark often considered the threshold of institutional legacy, Kempton points out — retail plays an integral role in everyday operations and planning for the future. Exhibits continue to expand at the museum, and the amount of visitors continues to grow.

The store, under Cacas’ watch, continues to deepen the connection between surf culture and the people who love it.

“It’s the positive vibe,” she says. “People walk in, they see the boards, the art, the timeline — and they just light up. Then they find something in the store that brings that feeling home.” SGN

Rocky Mountain Show sells out winter show floor

The Rocky Mountain Apparel, Gift & Resort Show is set to kick off its Winter edition Feb. 10-13 in Denver with a soldout expo floor.

More than 200 exhibitors and over 600 brands will fill the Colorado Convention Center, including over 50 first-time exhibitors.

Returning to its February timing, the Rocky Mountain Show continues to connect regional retailers with brands and makers in a welcoming and cost-effective setting built specifically for the Mountain region. Show organizers say this season’s exhibitor lineup spans apparel, gifts, souvenirs, outdoor products, Made-in-Colorado and USA goods, and emerging makers.

“Our community told us they wanted February back, and the response speaks for itself,” says Evan Shoda, CEO of RedlineXpo, which is managing the show. “A sold-out floor — plus so many new brands — shows the strength of the regional market and the value of a show designed around meaningful connections, not big-show headaches.”

Show organizers say retailers attending the Winter edition can expect a focused show floor, a mix of returning favorites and new discoveries, and a friendly, approachable show experience. Smoky Mountain Gift Show celebrates 60th anniversary

The Smoky Mountain Gift Show celebrated a major milestone at its most recent event with its 60th anniversary. As one of the longest-running souvenir trade shows, the event is a popular destination for retailers seeking new products, trends and connections in the gift and souvenir industry.

The Nov. 5-8, 2025, event at the Gatlinburg Convention Center in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, offered over 500 exhibiting companies and lines across categories ranging from souvenirs and apparel to toys and gifts Made in America.

Retailers came to explore the new offerings, connect with suppliers and attend exclusive buyer tours, including the Made in America Tour and the Zootique Tour, designed to highlight exhibitors and products and maximize show experience.

The show also debuted a Makers Market as a dedicated section for handmade artists where retailers could browse for unique, locally crafted products.

Libby Smith of Smith-Western Co. received the Women in Leadership Award for her visionary guidance and ability to inspire change.

The Impact Award went to Jose Sepulveda of Evelyn Hill Inc., whose nearly 40-year career as a buyer for the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Fort McHenry NM & HS has left a lasting mark on the industry.

or 30 years, A Store Named Stuff has celebrated makers and uplifted nonprofits in Kansas City, Missouri, inspired by the creative and connected sisters, Casey and Sloane Simmons. Their business has evolved and grown much bigger, but its people-first philosophy is a constant and the core mission.

“We believe in people, not product,” Sloane says. “Everything we give stays in Kansas City and reflects the values we built this store on.”

Casey says they’re constantly asking, “How can we be good stewards and help our community be better and stronger?”
