GOOD THINGS ARE COMING IN 2026 It’s hard to believe we closed out yet another year, and are ushering in a new one. While 2025 had its challenges, it sure was a resilient year for many coastal retailers. We saw so many stores that had been damaged by hurricanes Milton and Helene in late 2024 put the finishing touches on their newly built or remodeled stores and reopen with better stock and in more beautiful, hurricane-proof settings than before.

MAKING WAVES q ‘The O’ charts a new course A build-out is underway and plans to expand are assail at The Ophiuroidea in Maryland. The storefront will soon move five miles northeast from its Grasonville location to Kent Island.

Owner Kim Hannon’s coastal boutique first opened in 2009 in Saint Michaels and relocated to its existing spot six years ago. Now, the store is making moves again.

“We’re really excited about the location near a marina and new hotel that is being built, so there is lots of activity and excitement for this new space,” says Hannon, amid construction to complete the shop’s interior in November and December.

Vintage tee raises $2.3 million for otters at Monterey Bay Aquarium When Taylor Swift appeared at “The Life of a Showgirl” official release party wearing a vintage Monterey Bay Aquarium T-shirt, the gift shop team took notice — along with Swifties following the artist online. Within hours, the 1990s-era otter tee was trending across social media, and donations to the aquarium began pouring in.

“Late one Friday afternoon, our team was reading the comments on our social posts and noticed something a little odd,” the aquarium shared in its announcement. “Swiftie eagle eyes had spotted our vintage otter shirt. Soon our feeds were flooded! Huge thanks for the love.”

The Monterey Bay Aquarium quickly responded to the viral moment by relaunching the shirt as a limited-time thank you gift for donors contributing at least $65.13, a nod to Swift’s lucky number 13. The funds support the aquarium’s Sea Otter Program and other ocean conservation efforts.

The fundraiser brought in $2.3 million in less than two days, doubling the aquarium’s initial goal. For gift shops and souvenir retailers, this story offers inspiration. The right product paired with a clear mission can make waves far beyond the sales floor. The T-shirt campaign is currently “on paws” as the aquarium catches up on shirt printing and packing, according to its website.

Florida’s new Mote SEA attraction comes with brand new gift shop

The Crane Point Hammock Museum & Nature Center recently completed renovations, offering guests more interactive exhibits to learn about sea life at the Marathon, Florida, destination. To match those renovations, CEO Charlotte Quinn says she decided the gift shop could also benefit from a new look.

The gift shop went from having wood panel walls and tan fixtures to white slat wall and black and gray fixtures for a more modern look.

Quinn says new fixtures also provided her with additional space to showcase merchandise, allowing her to expand the product mix.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium has debuted its new Mote Science and Education Aquarium (SEA) in Sarasota, Florida. Opened on Oct. 8, 2025, the 146,000-square-foot facility is located at Sarasota’s Nathan Benderson Park and is twice the size of Mote’s facility on Sarasota’s City Island, which is continuing to operate as a Mote research facility.

The educational attraction also comes with a new gift shop, managed by Event Network. Store Director Sandi Finefield says the look of the store flows seamlessly with the aquarium itself. “The gift shop was designed as an extension of the first floor, which is all about the sea,” she says. “Color schemes all match what we have on the first floor — we have wavy designs throughout.”

Mote SEA and its gift shop have had steady business already as of October 2025, with many locals excited for the longawaited aquarium. “The local community here really supports Mote,” says Finefield.

Brittany Jones wasn’t just eager to solve this problem for herself and others, she was the right person for the job. After many years of owning

salons and styling hair, she moved to Florida, lived on a boat and “became addicted scuba diving” as she puts it.

Her background with hair products and first-hand experience with saltwater’s effects on the hair, made her the ideal person to find a solution for those looking for saltwater protection or wanting to simply indulge in a reef-safe, beach-scented product.

DIVING IN. Working closely with a chemist in Florida, Jones says, “We came up with a formula that feels SPONSORED ADVERTISEMENT

light on the hair but actually repels the saltwater off it. We developed an oil- and aloe-based formula that keeps your hair pH balanced, repels the saltwater, and then repairs your hair while you’re in the water.”

That flagship formula — Feelin’ Nauti Salt Sheild — became the core of Coconut Smuggler’s threeproduct line, which also includes Landlubber, a head-to-toe reviver with aloe, willow bark, witch hazel and anti-inflammatory ingredients; and the Island Dweller perfume roller featuring the line’s signature scent.

“Everybody loves the scent so much,” Jones says. “It smells like a nostalgic day at the beach.”

FINDING AN AVID MARKET. Surfers and divers have enthusiastically embraced the brand. “Famous surfers and divers are really loving the product,” Jones notes.

Retailers are seeing the momentum too: “The shops that we are in are selling about 50 units a month between the three products.

Anywhere that you get the product in front of people, it does really well,” she says.

Part of the appeal comes from the brand’s simplicity and multi-use design. “Surfers and divers don’t want a million products in their bag,” Jones notes. “We want a couple things that we can keep with us at all times and can do the job. Coconut Smuggler was built for exactly that.”

A SAFE SOLUTION. Just as important to Jones and her customers is the

brand’s eco-forward packaging and safe ingredients. Coconut Smuggler uses aluminum bottles for nearly everything. Jones chose aluminum because it’s “infinitely recyclable” unlike reclaimed ocean plastic, which can only be recycled once or twice in its lifecycle.

In addition, Coconut Smuggler’s formulas are 99.7% all-natural, with all ingredients Certified Reef Safe.

“All you have to do is email us to get started,” Jones says. Orders ship in about two days, margins are strong (50 to 60%), and the retail price point — $22 to $28 — makes the line approachable for beach, surf and dive shops.

each towns change. Stores turn over.

Trends come and go. But on Siesta Key — a barrier-island destination in Florida known for white quartz sand — one retailer has sustained an “everything beach” presence for more than 40 years.

“We’re fun, casual, laid-back and we try to offer a little bit of everything for everyone,” says Wendall Jacobsen, who started working at Beach Bazaar in 1991 when he was 16 years old and never left.

Today, Jacobsen is a partner with the founders, Sue and Mike Balas, continuing a Sun Coast tradition for generations of families that appreciate the store’s souvenirs, surf brands, swimsuits and T-shirts. The 6,000-squarefoot, four-room coastal emporium in the Siesta Village shopping district is an extension of the beach experience for locals, snowbirds and tourists.

And just as Beach Bazaar is not your typical coastal gift shop, Siesta Key differs from many coastal towns because nearly all accommodations are condos — not hotels, Jacobsen points out.

“That means families return year after year, often staying in the same unit, passing it down through generations,” Jacobsen says. “We’ve watched families grow up

shopping at Beach Bazaar. It’s pretty special.”

Jacobsen has helped steer the ever-evolving store through retail transitions and challenges, including Hurricane Milton in 2024, which flooded the building and eroded displays that he and the team expeditiously rebuilt, reopening in just over three weeks.

The shop’s longevity is no accident. It’s the result of vision, reinvention, resilience and the kind of community involvement that anchors a business.

“It’s about really listening to your customers — and you have to be willing to change with the times and take some risks,” he says.

MAKING A MAINSTAY

Beach Bazaar’s business timeline started before its brickand-mortar presence, when the Balases traveled the Florida fair circuit, personalizing hats. After hopping up and down the coast, they settled in Siesta Key and found a promising cluster of small storefronts anchored by a gas station. This was the “landfall” for Beach Bazaar.

Back then, the strip included four stores and Beach Bazaar set up shop in one of them.

Over time, the business expanded, and by 2001, the Balases had acquired all of the shops and the old Citgo JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2026 SEASIDE RETAILER 31

station to create one big bazaar.

Originally, it was known as a beach shop with impulse items, souvenirs and accessories. But with the store’s expansion, the buying approach pushed boundaries.

That evolution included curated surf and swim brands. This move required pushing into a market that at first wasn’t so sure about repping their brands in a venue more known for flip-flops and name-drop tees.

“Many of the bigger surf companies wanted specialty surf or skate retailers,” Jacobsen relates. “We were known as a beach store, so we were looked down on a bit when we

started in surf.”

But over time, Reef and other surf sandal brands took a chance on Beach Bazaar. Billabong, Rusty, Salt Life and Life Is Good followed.

“Vendors saw the volume we could move and tourism here was growing,” Jacobsen says.

Each Beach Bazaar department has its own identity, but the floor plan guides customers through dedicated spaces for easy navigation.

with souvenirs and beach essentials. American Gift Corp. is a key supplier, as are toys by Barry-Owen Co. and Fun Stuff Inc., ranging from die-cast cars, popular 3D-printed animals and rubber sea creatures.

Games move from shelves, especially on rainy days.

The mid-store area blends island apparel basics and resort wear. It’s often the busiest space, where families pick up matching shirts, sweatshirts and vacation keepsakes. Displays are stocked with name-drop tees, sweat-

shirts and accessories tailored to Siesta Key’s visitors, many of whom come from the Midwest.

“We sell a lot of sweatshirts for that reason,” says Jacobsen.

Apparel spans across brands including Lakeshirts, Yesterdays Sportswear, L2 Brands, Cabana Life and others, with a growing resort wear presence. Meanwhile, coolers are huge sellers. Beach Bazaar moves all sizes of Kanga Coolers, Igloos and Corkcicle and positions these products by adjacent items like Tervis drinkware.

cases surf swim brands like Roxy, Sunset Separates, Maaji, Body Glove, Rip Curl and an expanding selection that includes Beach House and Roka.

This store-within-a-store offers an elevated shopping department for sought-after brands, Jacobsen says.

All rooms have separate POS stations. “Spring and summer get very busy, so we make checkout as efficient as possible,” Jacobsen says.

WEATHERING STORMS

In fact, efficiency and resiliency are key in this beach town. Jacobsen reflects to October 2024 when Siesta Key took a direct hit from Hurricane Milton. “We had 18 inches of water inside the store,” he says. “Hundreds of thousands of dollars in inventory were destroyed.”

Though Beach Bazaar followed its standard hurricane protocol, this time, it wasn’t enough. “They always tell you the streets will flood and they never do,” he says. “This time, they did.”

Particle-board racks swelled and disintegrated. Drywall had to be torn out. Slatwall buckled. With no power and high humidity, mold set in almost instantly. A positive: the building’s rugged concrete block construction.

“We rebuilt much of it ourselves,” Jacobsen says of the interior rehab.

The store maintained steady payroll to its 37 full-time, year-round team members rather than paying outside contractors for a rebuild. The reopening was all about the store’s people. “We wanted them working,

feeling normal again,” says Jacobsen.

The island itself faced months of recovery. About 1,600 vacation units were offline due to damage, elevator failures and structural concerns.

Media coverage painted the island as “destroyed,” hurting visitation even after businesses reopened.

“We did everything we could to dispel the narrative,” Jacobsen says. “We showed photos of the beach, the progress, the store — anything to remind people we were still here.”

The local chamber supported cleanup crews, coordinated supplies and worked tirelessly to correct misinformation. “It taught us a lot,” Jacobsen says. “Expect the worst, hope for the best and be better prepared.”

There is a generosity to the culture, mirrored in how vendors responded after the hurricane, Jacobsen emphasizes. “All of my sales reps reached out personally to check on us,” he says. “In difficult times, relationships matter.

They help you get through.”

A COMMUNITY ANCHOR

Beach Bazaar’s presence on Siesta Key extends beyond retail. Jacobsen is a longtime board member and past president of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce.

“Being a staple in the community means being involved,” he says. “I like having a say in what’s happening on the island. And for Beach Bazaar, it’s part of our duty.”

Jacobsen also serves as chairman of the board for Casting for the Kids, a Sarasota nonprofit supporting families facing pediatric cancer. The store promotes the nonprofit and donates through sales of his apparel brand Floridified. Beach Bazaar also encourages shoppers to scan a QR code to give year-round.

For Jacobsen, who’s ingrained in the Siesta Key retail business and nonprofit communities, Beach Bazaar is home.

“Being part of Siesta Key means something to us,” Jacobsen says. “We’re proud of where we are — and proud to still be here.”

The Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina, caters to many of these demographics at its property equipped with golf courses, beach access and hospitality. Megan

Mitchell, retail shop manager and buyer, explains that the retail shop includes great giftable, “where did you get that?” items and perfect items to take back home to remember stays on the island. The store carries both men’s and women’s leisurewear, golf attire and casual attire. “Eighty-five percent of our apparel is logoed or has some sort of name drop like our embroidered Harbour Town Lighthouse or [with the names] Sea Pines or Harbour Town.”

Mitchell is noticing a trend toward more comfortable looks with trendier leisurewear heading into the busy spring and summer season.

“We are seeing several trends and are ready for them!” she says.

“Along with the super-hot trend of lobsters and oysters, fish have joined the trend in a very strong way. We continue to see growth in our most popular body type of knit but have started to receive increased requests for a more tailored style. We have launched our new Favorite Crewneck in response; we are also seeing a slight shift downward in sizing.”

Tommy Bahama has been riding the wave of coastal Bohemia over the last several seasons, which Bradley O’Brien, executive vice president of

product design and development, says has been playing into the strength of the core DNA at Tommy Bahama.

“Inspiration is drawn from coastal elements, especially popular are seashell motifs. The color palette is soothing and natural: topaz teal, soft sienna and tea leaf sit along classic navy and black to create an elevated sophistication,” she says.

She notes pucker is an important trend in fabrication. “Our core Island Cays Pique is a perennial favorite, updated with new solids and prints. We launched Tropic Isles, which is a soft textural pucker with a beautiful drape and hand.”

The company’s Shell Sands collection has been extremely popular since its launch, according to O’Brien.

As for prints, he says Mediterranean themes are trending, particularly graphics featuring fruits and lobsters for beach and summer wear.

Buddy by the Sea is a go-to beach brand attracting both dog and beach lovers. Executive Vice President Jeanette Speenburgh observed that at the December 2025 Grand Strand Gift & Resort Merchandise Show in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, trends were hard to define with both neutral earthy tones and classic turquoise and blues all being sought out.

Matching sets for moms, dads, kids, babies and even pets, have long been available and lately are gaining traction with the coastal crowd.

Family matching nostalgia is a feature Emerson and Friends likes to home in on with its prints. Recent favorites include Camp Emerson, inspired by the CEO’s family camping trips, and Save the Sea Turtles.

“Our coastal Christmas print sells out every single year,” says Ashley Bechtloff, marketing manager. “We even have dog bandanas that match our Christmas print,” she adds.

Seaesta Surf has expanded beyond its swim offerings in 2026 and into a wider coastal lifestyle collection. For 2026, Julia Wheeler, founder and creative director, sees match-back moments, elevated nostalgia and multi-use pieces trending.

“Families love to coordinate, whether it’s siblings in matching prints or parent-child matching sets, especially while on vacation and taking family photos. Even just having colors and prints that coordinate without having to match exactly. This is definitely something to think about while merchandising,” she advises.

Christina Freberg, vice president and director of wholesale for lifestyle brand Lotus and Luna, says summer 2026 “is absolutely defined by the permanent vacation wear mindset.”

“Our customer is rejecting fleeting trends for a carefree, Zen lifestyle,” she says. “This means clothes must embody conscious comfort and be ready for travel or the boardwalk.”

The focus, according to Freberg, is on flirty comfort with easy, sometimes convertible, flowy dresses and skirts with subtle ruffles or bows. “This trend strongly favors natural fibers, making 100% cotton the strongest signal, which aligns perfectly with our ethical sourcing commitment and the need for breathable styles,” she adds.

Telling the story behind USA-made and locally made products can be a great selling point for seaside retailers.

AN AMERICAN STORY

W

hen it comes to finding gifts and keepsakes, Americans truly do place a higher value on American-made goods.

According to a November 2024 poll conducted for the Alliance for American Manufacturing, 77% of respondents said they prefer to purchase American-made gifts.

Recognizing this demand, some seaside retailers have made concerted efforts to market their USA-made

and American-themed products in their stores. For some, it’s even part of their mission.

Since 2012, Bryan and Stacy Pritchett have owned coastal boutiques in the Florida Panhandle, including Mercantile and Duckies in Seaside, Florida, and Disco and Harbor in Rosemary Beach, Florida.

The stores aim to provide the community with classic looks and gifts that are mostly American-made, earth-friendly and cause-driven.

Store Manager Bailey Dybas says this mission is central to all decisions at these four coastal stores.

“Our American-made selection remains strong,” says Dybas. “That

has been the original commitment since we opened — to have quality and transparency. We keep track of where our producers make goods.”

the store’s mission of providing American-made, earth-friendly and cause-driven products. She shares that all of the store’s T-shirts are made in the U.S., along with some jewelry and gifts.

“I think you can walk into any store and look at their product and it defines who they are,” says Dybas.

“This is important to us. By offering goods made in America, it helps us stay true to our mission and remind customers of why it matters to know where things come from and who makes them.”

AN AMERICAN MISSION

Providing American-made goods is central to the mission for other seaside retailers as well. Ellie Oczkowski started The Christmas Vacation Shop in 2003 in Bar Harbor, Maine, to sell her homemade personalized ornaments. It began as just a side job while she raised two small kids.

Early in the business, she says she learned that customers wanted to find more USA-made and locally made goods. As the store grew and Oczkowski added new vendors, she says she made sure to carry as much American-made and locally made gifts and decor as she could. Today, she estimates that a little over half of the products are made in the USA or locally made.

80% of the store’s products are made in Maine or the USA. Rayle shares that tourists appreciate that the store has a good, curated selection of products made in Maine and the USA that they can take home.

“We have people come from all over the world, and they want something made in Maine or made locally,” she explains.

Some nautical themed attractions also strive to promote USA-made goods, such as The Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia.

Public Engagement Manager Andrea Pollock says that one of the museum’s missions is to promote American-made products. The store features playful nautical tea towels from Philadelphia-based Girls Can Tell Gift Co., and some anchor and

Calling out American-made products through displays can go a long way for seaside retailers that want to delve into this category more.

Oczkowski says she has some signage in the store to call out products that are made in the USA and locally. Customer service plays a big role in upselling American-made gifts and souvenirs, she adds “As soon as folks walk in the

store, we welcome them to The Christmas Vacation Shop. Then we tell them a little bit about the shop — many of our items are made here, made in Maine, made in USA,” says Oczkowski. “Almost every person who walks in hears that.”

Mercantile occasionally has displays promoting an American-made product line, but Dybas says simply having one-on-one conversations with customers is key.

“We rely heavily on our floor staff to make customers aware of our products,” she says, adding that the store regularly trains its staff on all the brands it carries.

It’s a win for customers, a win for vendors and a win for the store.

“One of the things that works so well for us is myself and a couple of the people who work here are so passionate about the things that we have in the shop,” says Rayle. “Enthusiasm and passion are key. We’re enthusiastic about having our Maine artists, and that enthusiasm spills over to the customers.”

The company services a wide range of retailers and consumers, particularly since it began its partnership with Salt Life in 2025 as the exclusive partner for beach chairs and umbrellas, according to Ben Miller, director of business development.

HEADING WEST

Raleigh, North Carolina-based Shibumi Shade’s popular shades and chairs are prevalent in the Carolinas.

The brand made its debut at CARV Expo in San Diego this past June to help gain traction with retailers on the West Coast as well. The company offers two shade sizes and introduced a beach chair in 2025.

Jeff Schwaninger, vice president of wholesale, says regional beach habits play a major role in determining which shade sizes resonate. On the East Coast, families often spend long

stretches on the sand, making the large Shibumi shade “necessary.”

People in California, on the other hand, tend to make quick trips rather than setting up for the day. The smaller Shibumi model “fits your back, your backpack, your bike basket,” making it ideal for California’s more mobile beachgoers, Schwaninger explains.

Wacho launched its beach chairs and beach blankets in the U.S. market in 2025. The Wacho chair, made with soft and water-resistant fabric, is ideal for enjoying a comfortable and dry backrest, according to Co-founder Diego Zimmerman. “It’s foldable, lightweight, and features bold, stylish patterns, so you can just sling it over your shoulder like an accessory,” he says. “Once you find your spot, the foam padding keeps you comfy Wacho’s colorful, waterproof beach chairs can be slung over the shoulder for easy carrying.

GCI Outdoor introduced a new lineup of beach chairs for 2026, including the GCI Outdoor Big Surf beach chair, featuring “an innovative slide table to hold snacks, drinks and summertime necessities while you hang loose by the water,” according to the company website.

Each of the company’s premium beach chairs offers customizable comfort with adjustable backrests, cushioned headrests and breathable materials, according to Sierra Krebsbach, marketing director.

“The bags are designed with proximity to water in mind. There are two drainage holes in the bottom so you won’t find water or sand in the bottom of your bag,” says Nidhi Sharma, CEO and founder.

“We’re adding colors every season now. For Spring 2026, we’re adding bright pink, pine green and orange,” Sharma adds.

Simply Southern is seeing popularity with its Simply Tough Tote. According to Georgio Aydogdu, co-owner and creative director, “The totes have become a must-have item with every order because they are easy to clean with a quick rinse after a day at the beach.”

As another solution, Coconut Smuggler is a saltwater-focused haircare line created by a professional hairstylist. “Our products are designed specifically for surfers, divers, swimmers, and anyone who lives in and around the water,” says founder Brittany Jones.

Surf Expo, a leading marketplace for watersports, coastal and outdoor lifestyle brands, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026. The first show of 2026 kicks off Jan. 7-9 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Since 1976, Surf Expo has served as a go-to destination for trend-setting product launches, industry connections and business growth. Show organizers say the expansion of this category is a natural evolution, complementing the show’s core categories: surf, swim, boutique and resort.

Shoreline Outdoor offers brands and retailers a dynamic platform to explore crossover products, diversify assortments and connect with new audiences.

“I think it’s great that Surf Expo is bringing in more brands and retailers focused on the general outdoors and not just surfing or coastal living,” says Cory Higgins, chief commercial officer and co-founder of Jetty. “People in inland communities enjoy the same activities we do on the ocean — whether it’s surfing behind boats or in wave pools or paddling on any body of water. The Smoky Mountain Gift Show hit a major milestone with its 60th anniversary at the most recent event Nov. 5-8, 2025, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, making it one of the nation’s longest-running souvenir trade shows.

The show featured over 500 exhibiting companies and lines across categories ranging from souvenirs and apparel to toys and Made in America products. Retailers explored new offerings, connected with top suppliers and took advantage of exclusive buyer tours, including the Made in America Tour and Zootique Tour, designed to maximize show experiences.

For the anniversary event, attendees received special anniversary badge holders, enjoyed daily birthday swag and cake cuttings, and participated in anniversary giveaways.

The Makers Market also debuted as a new section at the show for handmade products. Retailers browsed the section for unique, locally crafted products.

oca Boutique in Sarasota is more than a coastal lifestyle shop — it’s a space designed to inspire, uplift and bring people together.

Owner Dixi Robertson opened the shop with her husband several years ago. After his passing last spring, the boutique has become an even deeper reflection of resilience, creativity and community.

“I wanted a place where people

could walk in and feel joy — in their homes, in themselves and in this community,” says Robertson, who blends her eye for interior design with a desire to create meaningful

ROOTED IN THE COMMUNITY

Other initiatives include supporting Big Water Land Trust and welcoming groups to host fundraising nights. Robertson chooses each partnership thoughtfully.

A recent partnership benefited Suncoast Stars Community, an organization supporting adults with disabilities. Boca Boutique hosted an event featuring handmade cards they created. “It felt wonderful to support them,” Robertson says. “These are our neighbors.”

Giving back has been at the heart of Boca Boutique. “To whom much is given, much is expected,” says Robertson, relating how the shop regularly partners with organizations that are rooted in Sarasota and woven into her own life.
