Thank you Dear Editor, May I through your columns offer thanks on behalf of the residents of Newton to PCSO Holly Prosser? After six years of service to the Newton community she is moving on to a new role in South Wales Police. We will miss her happy outlook and the work she has done on our behalf. Good luck and thank you. CLLR GRAHAM WALTER

Garden refuse bags Dear Editor, Why on earth should Porthcawl residents be asked to pay £22 for garden refuse bags? I cannot take my rubbish to the tip – I have neither a car nor family to take it, as advised by the council. Please stop this nonsense. It's bad enough with pending higher fuel bills, without having to pay for basic necessities. RUTH FISHER Porthcawl

Mr Thomkinson's response

Re: Dead Dock Street

Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Mr Silly and Mr Highman from the museum for my response in the November addition of the Seaside News. They have indeed made me realise that I have made a serious error of judgement and I have made a fool of myself. However, after some time sitting on the wall above the harbour the other day smoking my pipe as I regularly like to do I eventually noticed that there was some work going on there. I do not know what is happening there but I look forward to the results in four or five years time, and it did inspire me with a vision though. As I sat and pondered the future of our wonderful town I had a thought. Why don’t we have a swimming pool? I am very surprised that nobody has thought of this before. It would certainly help with keeping the locals healthy instead of crowding the pubs out and it would attract visitors. It may even stop these so called ‘surfers’ from littering the water on the promenade and make them get on with a more respectable pastime. On a final note, I would like to accept Mr Highman’s kind offer to join the Museum and I promise him that next year I certainly will.

Dear Editor, I was disappointed with the tone in which Avril Lake responded to John Jenkins' previous letter. It seemed more like a vicious personal attack than a constructive response to Mr Jenkins' suggestions for the town. And, before Mrs Lake attacks me, I must say I am not a follower or fan of John Jenkins but she has gone completely over the top at what really are just 'suggestions'. It reminded me of the germs of Fascism that I and many of my countryfolk fought against in the 30s and 40s. Mr Jenkins et al. are more

GERALD THOMKINSON

than welcome to put forward suggestions for the town and should be able to do it without fear of chastisement from the local government bully. As I said earlier, I am neither a fan nor follower of John Jenkins. I am impartial, but at least he seems to care about his town which sadly I cannot say the same for Avril Lake. St Clare’s School A very Happy New Year to everyone from all pupils and staff at St Clare’s School! 2013 is a landmark year for St Clare’s as it is our 75th anniversary. We will be hosting a wide range of events throughout the year which we hope will be attended by pupils, parents and staff, both past and present. In order to mark our diamond anniversary, we are keen to hear from those of you who wish to share tales of your fond memories of our school. We have been a focal point of the community for 75 years, and we are looking for your photographs to help us create a display of the school’s

Happy New Year from St John’s School!

Newton Primary It is with great sadness that we announce that one of our ex-pupils has lost his battle with leukaemia. Macsen was a special boy, a lovely boy, who had a shining light about him that touched everyone who met him. He remained positive and brave to the end and as his family said, he was ‘an all round good egg’. We miss him very much. Last month, a group of pupils were pleased to attend the blessing of the Crib on the green at Griffin Park (especially as Macsen had designed it whilst a pupil here). Christmas concerts and festivities

abounded in December and everybody enjoyed performing in front of proud mums and dads. Team Newton organised a very successful Christmas Fayre and raised in excess of £2,000 – new computers for our ICT suite have already been ordered so should be ready to use next term. And so, for the very last time, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and will have a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. There is only one more thing to say…onwards and upwards, Newton – it has indeed been a pleasure.

We enjoyed a very festive end to the term in December. Our younger pupils performed in a traditional nativity play and they also took part in a carol service at St John’s Church. All pupils from Years 4-11 also sang and participated in a second service the day after. The school’s Interact club organised and decorated a tree GILL GORE www.newtonprimary. for the Christmas Tree Festival in All Saints Church, Porthcawl bridgend.gov.uk

proud history. If you have anything that you would like to contribute to our celebrations, please contact sarah. jacobs@stclares-school.co.uk. It is also set to be a busy term for current pupils, with members of the Sixth Form preparing for a visit to Disneyland Paris, where they will attend business seminars and workshops and will also be visiting the Paris Business School. We also wish the very best of luck to all pupils sitting exams over the next few weeks. MR JOHN AGUILAR

and they also got involved in selling Christmas decorations and running a stall at the Friends of St John’s Christmas Bazaar. This last event was a great success as ever and it is always lovely to see the sports hall transformed by beautiful decorations and stalls. The Friends raised nearly £1,000 and another £3,500 was raised at the annual Christmas Ball which this year was held at the Grove Golf Club. Pre Prep children enjoyed a trip to see Father Christmas and feed the reindeer at Cimla Equestrian Centre and all pupils and staff of the school enjoyed a festive Christmas lunch in school cooked by our fantastic kitchen team. For more details of life at St John’s in 2013 call the office to arrange a visit or free taster session. MRS C A CLINT Headmistress 01656 783404, www. stjohnsschool-porthcawl.com

Bright Beginnings We have fantastic outside areas both at our Nottage and Tythegston nurseries; however we wanted to enhance them further and landscape them in the areas of learning. Staff brainstormed their ideas and designed their ideal gardens for the children to play and learn in the outside environment. We were thinking of seeking the help of Alan Titchmarsh, however we went one better and held a fundraising quiz night at the Hi-Tide Inn at the end of November! We had a quiz, auction and raffle evening and a good night was had by parents, carers, staff, friends

The Burrows A Happy New Year to all the Seaside News readers. We have a busy month ahead at The Burrows, incorporating our theme of Winter Wonderland. Topics include Jack Frost and stories from the books Percy the Park Keeper. January sees us also celebrating St. Dwynwen’s day, the Welsh patron saint of love. Our staff have planned exciting activities and trips to enhance the theme of Winter. This month, we begin the Bridgend Healthy and Sustainable Pre-school Scheme. The primary aim of this scheme is to promote a positive attitude to health and the environment.

and family! What a success – we raised over £2,000 for our garden areas. Some ideas that we have is a vegetable patch, outside music area, log circle for our forest area, outdoor creative area with chalkboards and a special area to house friendship benches for that special chat with their friends! We would like to say a massive thank you to everybody that attended, the generous donations given for the auction prizes, and donations of monies to enable us to allow our magical ideas come to fruition to benefit all the wonderful children that attend our nursery. Happy New Year!

We will work closely with the Health Promotion Practitioner who'll offer advice on the wellbeing of our children and staff. The first programme consists of Nutrition and Oral Health, which reflects on our approach to promoting a healthy balanced diet and good practice in relation to oral health. We are looking forward to getting started on the scheme. Our Breakfast Club is now up and running and our After School Club is thriving. If you feel this service would benefit you, please contact us on 771285. We offer breakfast or tea, depending which service you require. JULIE, KIM, AMANDA

Children & young people column Brynteg consume the opposition! Well done to pupils from Brynteg Comprehensive who fought off competition from five other local schools to become Bridgend County Borough’s Young Consumers of the Year for 2012/13. The contest, held at Bridgend County Borough Council’s Civic Offices, involved teams from Archbishop McGrath, Brynteg Comprehensive, Cynffig Comprehensive, Maesteg Comprehensive, Porthcawl Comprehensive and St Clare’s School. Teams battled to answer questions on a range of issues including consumer and legal affairs, credit and finance, social responsibility, healthy living and the environment. Young Consumers of the Year is an annual competition coor-

dinated by Trading Standards where teams of four, aged between 14 and 18, compete in a University Challenge-style quiz. Bridgend County Borough Council’s winning Young Consumers team will now represent the borough at the Welsh final of the competition, which takes place in Llandrindod Wells, Powys, next March. Brynteg will pit their wits against the best teams in Wales, for a chance to qualify for the grand final in Brighton in June 2013. The team from Brynteg Comprehensive, consisting of Ieuan Potts, Rhys Evans, Ben Evans and John Roberts, took home trophies, certificates, the Young Consumers of the Year shield and a 46 inch television donated by Sony UK Technol. Happy New Year to the children and young people of Bridgend County Borough and their parents and carers. My personal wish for 2013 is that more of our looked after children (LAC) become part of a happy, supportive foster family. Over the past year, there has been a six per cent increase in the number of LAC in Bridgend County Borough so we’re working especially hard to raise awareness of fostering and remind people that foster carers come from all walks of life. We’re keen to dispel the myths that you have to be married, own your

own home or be in a relationship to foster - you don’t! We particularly need people who can foster older children. We’d also like more would-be carers for siblings as we try hard to keep brothers and sisters together. Please consider becoming a foster carer in 2013. At the very least, go along to one of Bridgend Foster Care team’s regular ‘meet and greet’ sessions for a no-obligation chat with social workers and current foster carers. The next session is Wednesday 23 January, 7–9pm at Bryngarw House. For more information about becoming a foster carer, call 01656 642674 or visit www. bridgend.gov.uk/fostering COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID

Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr As usual the run up to Christmas was very busy at Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr. We all thoroughly enjoyed the Foundation Phase Christmas concerts, with the Early Years classes performing ‘Christmas with Sali Mali’ and Years 1 and 2 taking us on a trip around the world to learn about Christmas traditions in different countries. After all their hard work the children more than deserved their trip on the Brecon Railway to visit ‘Sion Corn’. Once again December was a very busy month for the school choir. The choir performed in the Carols in the Pavilion concert, the Christmas Tree Festival in All Saints Church and Pisgah Chapel’s Christmas carol concert. These were followed by a tour of local supermarkets, Porthcawl bandstand, McArthur Glen Shopping Centre and local care homes. Thank you very much to Mrs Dixon our

Headteacher and Mr Davies our Deputy Headteacher for all their hard work with the choir throughout the year. At the beginning of December the Junior department visited the Grand Pavilion to watch the Welsh medium pantomime Sinderela. We were inspired by meeting the characters of the Cinderella story celebrating Cinderella’s hen night in the jungle with Ant and Dec! We then turned our attentions to our own Christmas production of Sinderela, which found the traditional characters meeting the King of The World in the stable, reminding us all of the true meaning of Christmas. We hope that all the readers of the Seaside News enjoyed the Christmas season as much as us and we would like to wish you all a very happy new year. Blwyddyn newydd Dda i chi gyd! SGWAD SGWENNU SGÊR

Walking blindfold

Last month I went out with Guide Dogs for the Blind in Bridgend to learn about the many obstacles faced by those with sight problems in navigating town centres. A large group of people, along with a number of guide dogs gathered in the library in Bridgend so that a handful of politicians, including myself, could be blindfolded, given a white stick and then let loose in the pedestrianised area. It was a humbling and rather

Blunted by overuse View from the prom It’s been a busy time for the Independent councillors since May and we have made inroads to halting our town’s decline. From rotting and missing street signs to neglected infrastructure, we are seeing results. Refurbishment of the shelter opposite Ocean View flats is underway and the Seabank shelter is next. Refurbishment of the benches outside Trinity Church is complete together with repairs to the paving at the rear of the Grand Pavilion. Esterling Drive, Fairfax Crescent, Suffolk Place, Fitzhamon Road, Lougher Gardens have had new street signs. Victoria Avenue will get street names after an absence of 14 years. Mary St, Highfield Avenue, De

Turberville Close, De Granville Close and Highfield Close will follow. Good news too for the Green Avenue where the lumps and bumps in the road are going to be ironed out as well as repairs that are going to be made to the upper section of Park Avenue. The appalling condition of the road surface in Victoria Avenue hasn’t gone unnoticed either and it’s now been placed on the register for resurfacing. These are just a few examples of what has been achieved since May. As the colder temperatures begin to make an appearance, so do common infections, which people are quick to dismiss with the help of antibiotics. We have become reliant on visiting the doctor’s surgery for yet another prescription for antibiotics. Twenty-first century medicine has dramatically improved life expectancy for many people with complex conditions and seen the development of life saving transplants and chemotherapy treatments. Nevertheless, these would not be possible without the aid of antibiotics. But with people relying on antibiotics to cure even the slightest cough or cold, or believing in the

frightening experience. Fortunately, I did not walk into any walls or other obstacles, though there were a fair number of A-boards and other street furniture to navigate around, nor did I whack anybody with the white stick. My comment afterwards was that all elected officials and officers should have to do this at least once to understand how their decisions impact on people with disabilities. My thanks to all those who organised this event and my guide who made a very effective point very well and ensured that I did not injure myself in the process. PETER BLACK AM

misconception that antibiotics are a cure-all, is this constant use of drugs doing more harm than good? Between 1983 and 1987,16 new antibacterial agents were approved and brought to market, however between 2008 and 2012, this fell to an estimated 2-4 agents. Our ability to develop new drugs appears to be stalling. Meanwhile, antibiotics are being used more frequently. Superbugs such as MRSA have emerged and become resistant to antibiotics. We are rapidly reaching the stage where one of our key weapons against infections is being blunted by overuse. The only solution is to reduce our consumption of antibiotics. Carwyn Jones AM visit to Porthcawl Y First Minister Carwyn Jones AM recently visited the Porthcawl Y. He said, "I was delighted to accept an invitation from the Porthcawl Y to have a guided tour of their fantastic new facilities at their building in John Street. The recent half a million pound transformation of the centre has provided a fully accessible, state of the art venue for a wide range of community activities and services, benefiting people of all ages across Porthcawl." In the images alongside Carwyn are the Porthcawl Y Director, Rev Colin Richards and Senior Development Officer Vicki Thomson. NATASHA HIRST

Leader’s life Happy New Year readers. We debate many subjects via these pages and I know there are some especially close to your hearts! But I’d like to widen these in 2013 and hear from even more people on even more issues. One of the ways you can share opinions on what the council does is via our Citizens Panel. The panel has been up and running for some time now but this year we’ve re-launched it and want would-be panelists to come forward. You can be part of the panel if you live in the borough and are 16 or over. We want the panel to be diverse and represent our whole borough so we’d especially like to hear from more young people and from people who rent their homes. You’ll receive three to four surveys a year about a range of issues relating to council services and policies such as street cleanliness, customer

Deputy’s days I hope that you enjoyed the festive break and are looking forward to some of the exciting developments set to be unveiled in Porthcawl during 2013. The £3.2m Porthcawl Marina is on course to open this summer and provide 70 berths for leisure and commercial craft as well as visiting boats. Not only will this provide a welcome boost for local trade and tourism, it will also help

our efforts to establish Porthcawl as an official Water Sports Centre of Excellence. In a similar vein, new and improved facilities are in place at Rest Bay ready for the return of the hugely successful SplashUp, and there are plans for another Adrenaline festival, too. You can also expect to see more details on the revamped phase one proposals, the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative funding scheme and plans for the Jennings Building

and leisure site at harbour. I couldn’t end this column without mentioning the fantastic facilities for young people available at Porthcawl’s new Y Centre, which is continuing to fulfil the former YMCA’s important role in local community life. Congratulations to everyone who has played a part in its ongoing success! COUNCILLOR DAVID SAGE

‘Rec’ refurbishment picking up pace

Bulldozers and diggers have spent the last month removing the Rec’s ageing facilities as the £4m project is set to transform the borough’s largest leisure centre and enhance visitor experience. With works on track, phase one is due for completion by April 2013. Councillor Lyn Morgan, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing said: “I’m following the ongoing work with interest; parts of the Rec will be unrecognisable by the time we have finished.

These important redevelopment plans will put us in pole-position to provide 21st century leisure facilities. “BCBC’s partnership with Halo Leisure is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our communities so we hope the new facilities will appeal to current users as well as attract new ones." Recycle your Christmas tree for charity – it’s easy-treesy!

Households in Bridgend County Borough can again have their real Christmas trees collected from their kerbside and help local charities at the same time. The seasonal scheme by Bridgend County Borough Council means residents can put out their Christmas trees for collection with their usual recycling in exchange for a minimum donation to charity. Householders simply call the council’s main 01656 643643

number at least one day before their usual collection to make a card payment and their tree will be collected on their next recycling day. Collections will begin on Monday 7 January and run until Friday 18 January. BCBC is asking for a minimum donation of £3 per tree and all money raised will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and the Mayor’s Charity Appeal. The collections will be made by BCBC’s recycling partners May Gurney and are being funded through a Sustainable Waste Management grant meaning all donations will go to the nominated charities. The trees will then be taken to BCBC’s Highways recycling centre for chipping and composting. Alternatively, recycle your real Christmas trees at the council’s Waterton depot or one of the borough’s four recycling centres at Tythegston, Brynmenyn, Ogmore Vale or Maesteg. MICHELLE BOWER BCBC

Through Christian eyes Hi folks, in thinking of Christmas time then – Christmas is one of those times when people open gifts. However, gifts have to be received and also opened to have any real meaning. Until the gift is opened the gift remains just something in a box or behind wrapping paper. This principle works the same way with the gift that God gives us. The gift that God gives, and what we read about in the Bible, can be

Liberty Horses CIC Liberty Horses CIC is a new service, based in Porthcawl, set up to provide disadvantaged young people with opportunities to enhance their personal and social development, and improve their life skills through experiential learning with horses. Horses live in the moment. They don’t filter their thoughts and opinions of people through the labels we often live in the shadow of. Instead they respond directly to what they perceive in an individual in that moment. Our programme offers participants the opportunity to learn how to build a partnership with a horse, based on understanding. Participants learn to become a leader for the horse

without employing dominance or force. They learn how to achieve willingness without intimidation and harmony without coercion. Through this process their own self-awareness will increase. Young people will have the chance to learn life skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communication. We strive to create a safe and peaceful environment where each individual can discover and grow at their own pace. Liberty Horses CIC also offers some private tuition. Please contact us if you have any questions, would like more information, or would like to be able to access our service. We would love to hear from you. The healing springs of Kenfig Water is the primary source and symbol of life and because of this water sources were revered by our pre-Christian ancestors. Sacred objects, from broken swords to broken brooches were carefully placed in rivers and lakes as offerings to the gods. Water was thought to act as a transporter of knowledge from the Otherworld, rivers were used as natural boundaries and springs were believed to contain healing powers. The landscape around Kenfig is dotted with springs and many of them are said to contain special powers. For example, one spring, Ffynnon Llygad, which is situated near the castle moat, was noted

understood in a few different ways. They are: the gift of Jesus, the gift of salvation, the gift of God’s grace or the gift of the Holy Spirit. All these ultimately speak of the same thing. That God has shown us his love for us in Jesus Christ and calls us into a relationship with himself, and those who respond will know God’s presence in their lives. And as the bible says ‘taste the Lord and see he is good’. I guess my encouragement to us all would be to open the gift that God has given. You will never know how much that gift is worth unless you make it yours. NEIL HARVEY

for easing eye troubles while another spring, Pystyll-yPortland, situated to the east of the castle, had a reputation for healing fractures. A further spring, the Ffynnon Collwyn, sited behind St James’ Church in Pyle, is said to offer a cure to people afflicted by disease. In 1580 a bard, Dafydd Benwyn, visited Ffynnon Collwyn. The experience transformed him and he claimed a cure from the waters. He was moved to write a poem, extolling the spring and its virtues. His words echoed the thoughts of countless generations, stretching back into pre-history, and forward to those who still believe in the sacred nature of such springs. MANSEL JONES

Christmas festivities and 2012 are behind us and Porthcawl Lions look back on the year and consider what has been achieved. Hidden in the complexity of November’s Autumn Statement, there was good news for a growing minority of savers brave enough to embrace DIY pensions. Instead of irrevocably giving away at least three quarters of their pension savings to an insurance company to buy an income for life, drawdown pensioners retain ownership of their capital in the hope of receiving better returns. The Autumn Statement gave cold comfort to the retired with a modest 2.5% increase in the basic state pension, which will rise to £110.15 a week in April next year but hundreds of thousands will enjoy much bigger benefits from a welcome

A 'free' cruise? This is how he did it… Welcome to 2013 – let’s hope it’s a good year for all, in health, happiness and prosperity. Before Christmas I visited Denis, a healthy, well-travelled 75-year-old, and keen to discuss his ongoing finances. The

change to Income Drawdown limits. The Chancellor said he would raise the maximum drawdown limit by a fifth. Pensioners will therefore be able to receive 20% more income from their savings if they leave their funds invested and live off the income generated by the underlying assets, rather than buying an annuity. This will raise the maximum income that a 65-year-old pensioner can receive on savings of £100,000 from the current limit of £5,300 a year to £6,360 a year before tax. Since they were introduced, about 50,000 pensioners a year have set up Income Drawdown schemes with their pension funds as opposed to buying an annuity. These schemes however will not suit everyone and it is important to look at all of the options available before

conversation covered investment and a number of other issues before turning to the question of funeral planning. A sensible chap, Denis told me he had money set aside for this but had read that the cost of funerals was going up at an alarming 8%+ per annum.* With life expectancy of between another ten and fifteen years, possibly more, Denis was rightly concerned at what his own funeral might cost at that time - would the £5,000 he’d set aside be enough? We solved this problem at a

stroke. I discussed and arranged a pre-paid funeral plan for Denis, with the UK’s largest independent funeral plan provider, which guarantees to meet the cost of his funeral, whenever that may be, at a cost currently of around £3,000. He no longer worries whether his family will be able to afford the funeral both he and they would want, giving him great comfort. Matter resolved. Oh yes, the ‘free’ cruise… That was paid for by the £2,000 Denis had spare after pre-paying for his funeral. So

Income Drawdown: 20% more from your pension

Autumn Statement “It’s taking time, but the British economy is healing, turning back now would be a disaster.” – Chancellor George Osbourne “Today after two and a half years we can see, and people can feel in the country, the true scale of this Government’s economic failure.” – Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls Whoever you believe, one certainty is that different people will be affected in different ways by the recent Autumn Statement. Some of the changes are easy to grasp, while others are more complex. There will be an increase in ISA allowances, meaning more of us can save without incurring Income or Capital Gains Tax. ISAs are not free of Inheritance Tax (IHT), although the level at which IHT kicks in will increase from £325,000 to £329,000 in 2015/2016. A crucial element of the Au-

tumn Statement that is likely to go unnoticed is the change to Pension Annual Allowances and to Lifetime Allowances. The sizeable reduction in both of these allowances will catch a number of people unawares. I consider it imperative that people take advice in relation to pensions. This is especially true of final salary pension schemes, where one is not aware of the contribution level and how it is tested against the annual allowance limit. This is especially relevant for higher rate tax payers and can lead to a significant Income Tax liability. I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of seeking professional advice. I would therefore urge people to contact their Independent Financial Adviser or to feel free to give us a call and arrange your no obligation initial consultation. IAN DAVIES

New Year – New Start – Free Mindfulness Course I love beginnings and endings. These dualities: although they can cause some concern, there always exists a fresh opportunity to perhaps come from a position of ‘not knowing’. Watching our lives emerge from the position of ‘wait and see’ gives us the opportunity for flexibility, natural compassion and a sense of connection to our human experience. Talking about new beginnings, we didn’t know that we would be offering a free course! We have been really lucky and a charitable organisation has funded a Mindfulness Course that is free of charge. Last month saw various people come together and spend a day in silent retreat with Bhante Bodhidamma. Bodhidamma is an English Buddhist Monk from the Burmese Therevada Tradition. It was an excellent day, as always his explanations were concise, practical and wise. Within the Bridgend area there is a long standing relationship with a retreat centre known as ‘Gaia House’, based in North Devon. Every quarter a resident teacher comes to Bridgend and offers a day of high quality meditation instruction. Teeth whitening/ bleaching can restore natural tooth colour or whiten further. Bleaching uses carbamide peroxide which penetrates the tooth structure and bleaches stain from the tooth. Tooth discolouration can be caused by a number of factors, they darken with age, most common causes are tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco. There are different methods to whiten your teeth. In surgery ‘power whitening’, the product is applied by the dentist who applies a protective layer on the gums, protecting the soft tissues. The bleaching gel is then applied; these gels typically contain between 10% and 35%

Thinking of having a baby ? There are things you can do to help your baby’s development even before conception. Developing a healthy lifestyle will help prepare the body for pregnancy and an additional daily supplement of folic acid is advised by the Department of Health. Folic acid is a B vitamin and research shows that this vitamin can greatly reduce the risk of neural tube defects if taken in early pregnancy. Neural tube defects such as spina bifida occur when the neural tube which becomes the baby’s spine does not form properly. Folic acid can be found naturally in

carbamide peroxide, and on average will take 30 minutes to 1 hour, when combined with a light/heat source which helps accelerate the process. At home, the patient is provided with custom made trays and the whitening products. These stay on the teeth for 1520 minutes. You should have your teeth checked by a dentist before undergoing any teeth whitening. The effects of bleaching can last for months, but is also determined by the lifestyle of the patient and the original colour of the teeth. GRAHAM GIVENS

Do something positive this New Year

One in four of us experience mental health problems at some time in our lives. Before Christmas, Ed Miliband spoke about the stigma associated with mental ill health, which he called "a taboo which must be broken" and described the problem of mental illness in the UK as the "biggest unaddressed health challenge of our age". Carwyn Jones - First Minister and Assembly Member for Bridgend - also pledged the Welsh Government’s support through a new policy, ‘Together for

Mental Health’, which places combatting stigma at the heart of its work over the next 10 years. Unlike previous strategies which have focused on treatment for mental health, this one broadens its approach to recognise that mental wellbeing can be attributed by a number of factors including family breakdown, loss of job, debt or a change in role within the home, all of which can have a significant impact on an individual’s mental wellbeing. Sometimes a person’s wellbeing can be hindered for whatever reason. There are many agencies across Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot county boroughs who can help. Visit www.siaradwnni.org.uk and click on latest news and find access to a complete directory of services for mental health and well being across the age range. Do something positive this new year – don’t be afraid to help yourself or help another! JANE SAVILE BAVO

Marie Curie Nurses help not only patients but the whole family at a time that is very distressing. Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club

just to keep warm. There are two diversions that can ease the bite of winter – the January thaw and seed catalogues! Dreaming of summer and a garden full of beautiful roses? Plant them now so that their roots establish well in the spring, they will reward you with blooms in their first season. Did you know the ancient Egyptians ate onions for strength whilst building the Pyramids? Historically onions prevent infertility, impotence, hair loss and muscle problems – something for everyone! Remember successful gardening is doing what has to be done, when it has to be done, the way it ought to be done, whether you want to do it or not!

January is the darkest month and reliably unreliable! Your garden needs protecting from frost, gale force winds and heavy rain. Be ready to brush the snow off your evergreens and hedges. Heavy snow is a considerable weight and forces open the middle of these plants ruining their shape for the coming season – isn’t that something to look forward to! However a few energetic hours of tidying your garden can keep you fit and healthy (saving on gym fees) the colder it is the more calories you burn

Wonderful saviour Wonderful Saviour, perfectly formed In Mary’s pure womb, secretly named. For nine months she carried You, waiting her time; Patiently knowing the seed was Divine. The world could not know what feelings she had; She kept them inside and relied on her God Who fathered the child and protected them both By giving her Joseph, belov-ed, betrothed. By obedience and faith he took on the role Of father on earth to this new infant soul; Though born in a stable, they couldn’t have known What wonders awaited that first Christmas morn! For all through the night led by a bright star Rode men, from all races, with gifts from afar. The sky was alight with an angelic throng Proclaiming the birth in triumphant song!

My treasure The thief, you came Creeping in unawares To steal from me my love, my life, my treasure And I am left in darkness and afraid Remains for me now any joy or pleasure? But You are come You who are always near Victor o’er death, it’s You who are my Treasure And all I’ve loved is hidden safe in You In whom is joy and everlasting pleasure You too who weep Are come to share my loss And in my pain reveal Your richest treasure Shine now your light e’en in the deepest gloom My Lord, my Life, yes, e’en in pain my Pleasure

A time of reflection of old ways: Putting them aside and letting them go. Setting them free, wherever they lay: Unburdening yourself of wearisome lore. Midnight strikes and the crowd says: "Happy New Year"! to so and so. A happy rendition of "auld lang syne" raises: From amongst the crowd, friend and foe. Everybody ready with their New Year resolutions: To loose weight; stop smoking; gain promotion. Greeting the New Year, with merry salutations: Are many of the population. ANITA GRIFFITHS Pyle

Stag’s world of rock

l–r: Sarah George, Stag, Murf and Sarah Gunn

I hope you had a good Xmas! It’s that time again when I look into my crystal ball to see what lies ahead on the music scene! Nice to see Porthcawl’s Andy Edwards still writing great songs again. Andy is perhaps best known as lead guitarist in prog-rock band 'Ezra' which has released three albums. I believe a fourth is in

the pipeline, watch this space! I also wish luck to my mate Alan Jones with his new venue in Swansea called 'The Scene'. Cardiff-based Alan found fame in the late 60s and early 70s as a member of 'Amen Corner', which had all those hits including 'If Paradise Is Half As Nice', 'Bend Me, Shape Me', 'We’ll Fly High In The Sky' and many more. Finally, 'Tales of a Supernatural Nature' did not make an Xmas release locally, as was hoped, but some of the cast reunited recently for a party (see photo). The official release date is 1st March 2013, but keep an eye on the Downwood Film Productions website for more information. Text or call me with your music news and have a Happy New Year. Cheers. Royal Marines Association Her Majesty's Corps of Royal Marines was formed some 348 years ago as Britain's Sea Soldiers. The strength of the Corps, now some 8500 personnel including Royal Marines Reserve, is well represented by Welsh volunteers. The representation from Wales is something between 12 and 15%. Given that Wales represents but 5% of the UK population we are punching way above our weight in this elite force. Following on from service there is a very active and vibrant Royal Marines Association which by the way, additionally welcomes as members those who have served with the Royal Navy and those of the extended 'Commando' family.

38 | Seaside News

The role of the Royal Marines Association (RMA) is to maintain and promote esprit de corps and comradeship amongst all Royal Marines both general and band service, their families, past and present. The RMA is established in Branches all over the country and overseas to keep members in touch with one another. The RMA is an integral part of the "Corps Family". The Swansea Bay Branch of the RMA which covers the area from Carmarthen to the west and Llantwit Major to the east, will hold its next meeting at 7pm on Thursday 31st January at the St Helen's Suite in the Liberty Stadium Swansea. So come along and meet us and possibly join the branch. For further information please ring 01656 670224. ROGER SHEPPARD

‘Rising Stars’ shine in youth talent contest Bridgend Youth Service has held its 15th annual ‘Rising Stars’ youth talent contest at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. Contestants gave an array of musical, singing and dancing performances. Bridgend County Borough Council Mayor Councillor Marlene Thomas officially opened the show. Youth Worker Kris Davies was compere and the judges included Britain’s Got Talent finalist Jaheen Jafargholi, Emyr Jones from Only Boys Allowed and musician Marc George. The competition has been a platform for previous winners;

First place was presented to musician Patricia Coates, second place was dance troop ‘Contagious’ from Maesteg, and joint third place were band ‘Nihlus’ from Bridgend College and rapper ‘Endo’ from Youth Works. Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This event is a fantastic way of showcasing the high standard and variety of talent of so many of our young people. impact their radical fundraising idea will have on their lives, friendships and community. Calendar Girls opened at the Chichester Festival ,then triumphed in the West End, and has since become the fastest selling play in British theatre history. Performances are from 17th–19th January 2013 at the Grand Pavilion at 7.30pm nightly with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are priced at £11 with £9 concessions. The first event of the new year is at Ewenny Priory at 7.30pm on 18th January. We will be singing for Macmillan Cancer Support. Then on 1st February, we will sing in support of the St John’s Trust, Newcastle Hil, at Bridgend College starting at 7pm. We will share this concert with Vocelle Ladies Choir & Oldcastle Primary School Choir. In 2013, we will enter two competitions, one in Torquay of 15th-17th February, and another on the Isle of Man in October, so we are learning a number of new pieces. We are

Wild, wet and windy… Cor Bro Ogwr’s concert in November fought off the miserable weather with what a member of the audience called “their best concert ever”! At the end of the first half, the choir’s rendition of 'Y Tangnefeddywr' received a standing ovation from the audience who were delighted to hear some old favourites and two unusual pieces from the soloists, Jess Robinson and Beth Maxon, who are both studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The second half of the concert featured the first amateur performance of Karl Jenkins’ 'The Peacemakers'. This is a

The choir has recently been joined by 10 new recruits, some experienced choristers, others complete beginners. We would welcome anyone, oldhand or learner, to come along to any rehearsal to listen to us and get the taste for it. We rehearse Thursdays at 7.30pm in the OCLPC, Bryntirion. work devoted to the theme of peace with rousing choruses and the opportunity for the percussionists of the orchestra to show their talents. The choir enjoyed singing with the British Sinfonietta, an independent professional orchestra which is fast gaining an excellent reputation. The choir’s accompanist, Glenn Crooks, was also there, hidden from view but as always, playing to his usual high standard. The last word comes from the choir’s conductor, Edward-Rhys Harry, who told the choir afterwards, “conducting a concert is always work - but do you know, I really enjoyed myself!” As did everyone else in All Saints Church that evening. Bridgend Ramblers Shed those extra pounds in an enjoyable way! In the late nineteenth century, the Victorians banned the treadmill as a form of punishment in our prisons. In the late twentieth century they re-emerged as a form of punishment incorporating speedometers and TV screens. These reincarnations, installed in health centres and gymnasia, were used as punishment not for criminals but 'self correction' after overindulgences. If you've over-indulged over

the festive season, fear not, help is at hand. Instead of trudging a treadmill indoors, watching a TV image of the 'open road', why not try the real thing instead. Bridgend Ramblers invite you to shed the pounds in a much more convivial atmosphere (the open air!) with plenty of conversation and encouragement. Come along on any Sunday morning to Bridgend Recreation Centre Car Park by about 9.20 and we'll help you get your regime underway. See our website www.bridgendramblers.co.uk for further details. To all mums that are pregnant or breastfeeding… Please feel free to join us in any of our groups. We have one in Cornelly, Porthcawl, Ogmore Vale and Bettws, two in Bridgend please check out our website for days and times http://pipsw.wordpress.com/groups. Our groups are a way of making new friends, getting you and the baby out of the house for a few hours and if you need any breastfeeding support the other mums and Peer Supporters are there to help. We hold monthly taster sessions with a variety of businesses in the area eg Sing & Sign, Monkey Music, Boogie Beats, Mari our

Dental Advisor, Seren Fach and many more. Victoria from Sweet Pea Photography (photo above taken by Victoria) has held a sitting for babies. Clovermums has brought along her handy feeding clothing. Selina has brought along her Phoenix Cards and Mel as brought along her Usborne Books. If there are any other businesses that would like to offer taster sessions please feel free to contact us on Facebook - Parents in Partnership and Bridgend Breastfeeding. We will be in the YMCA on 10, 17 and 24 January 2013, then hoping to back to the Salthouse the last week on January 2013. Thanks lots to my dad, Mike Pritchard-Jones who has donated the money for the room hire. SAM HOWELS

Asperger’s Syndrome Support Group – Spectrum Since the YMCA opened its doors after refurbishment, Spectrum has been there every Thursday from 12.30–3pm. So far we have had very few callers and we are wondering whether this is because we are attempting to fill a need that doesn’t exist or because people are finding it difficult to attend during the day. We have considered moving the session to an evening slot, but before doing so we would like to hear

from any interested parties with your views. Please contact Sue Bridger on 01656 772534 or email her on susanmaybridger@hotmail.com so that we can make an informed decision on Spectrum’s future. SUSAN BRIDGER

Jordan and WKU Warriors team

Jordan Williams is a member of the Bridgend Scorpions and trains 5-6 days per week. He recently took part in the ICO World Cup Kickboxing competition held in Paris during November 2012, representing Team Wales with other members of WKU Bridgend Scorpions and Warriors. Jordan competed in the under 65kg for competitors aged under 17 category. Jordan achieved a silver medal in his continuous fight after coming 2nd. During the two day com-

petition Jordan fought a 3rd Dan black belt, a 2nd Dan black belt and a normal black belt. This means that Jordan is now ranked 2nd in the world in his category. This was an amazing opportunity and a fantastic accomplishment for Jordan who has only been kickboxing for 9 months with no prior experience of martial arts. Jordan’s parents funded the cost of the trip after being unable to obtain sponsorship for him. Jordan was able to undertake a fundraising event of his own at his school, Porthcawl Comprehensive, who also donated money to his fundraising pot. Jordan is again looking for a sponsor as he wants to continue competing and take part in the next World Cup. If any organisation would like to sponsor Jordan please email ziggycfor2010@sky.com MARK & EMMA WILLIAMS

Congratulations Sempai Steve Thompson Achieving the level of Shodan (first black belt) in any marshal art is a major achievement. Although there’s still plenty more to learn, it’s the ultimate goal for most students and it’s also the benchmark for most people outside the marshal arts community. Anyone who has begun learning a new skill later in life will appreciate how challenging that can be. Juggling the demands of career and family with study and practice are

hard enough, but when you factor in the physical demands of karate training the task is truly daunting. Steve Thompson started K karate in his late 30s and achieved his first black belt this summer with Bridgend-based karate club Senshi Do. He showed tremendous dedication and spirit in the period running up to his grading as well as during the grading itself. Senshi Do would like to extend its congratulations to a very popular and valued member of our club, and wish him a long, successful and happy future in karate. Osu Sempai Steve! HUW PRICE

The Foundation aims to give ambitious sports people in the borough, crucial support for their future. It will offer thousands of pounds worth of funding and free training opportunities to local people. “Many of the country's most talented sports people struggle to meet the rising costs of competition,” said Penny Southwood, Halo’s Community Partnership Manager. “The Foundation will assist local

Over the weekend of 24th/25th November the Student Surf Tour rolled into Porthcawl for the first leg of the tour. Lifeguards from Rest Bay Lifeguard Club provided the event safety cover but were left with a problem following the recent theft of their quad bike. Club Captain Chris Page said: "We agreed to provide safety cover for this event some time ago but the theft of our quad bike meant we had no way to get our rescue equipment onto the beach. Luckily hire firm SHB 4x4 hire who have a depot in

talented athletes towards achieving their full sporting potential by helping to reduce some of the financial burden of sporting costs.” “Sport can be challenging for athletes as their level of competition and success increases. The Halo Sport Foundation will make a significant difference to talented sports persons achieving their potential.” Bridgend local resident, Aled Davies, Discus Gold medallist, Paralympic Games London 2012. Rising local sporting stars have until 20th February 2013 to apply for a share of the Halo Sport Foundation support. Pyle heard of our plight and offered to sponsor a vehicle for the event and hired it at a subsided rate. Given what the weather was like over the weekend we really needed somewhere dry for lifeguards to patrol from and allowed us to keep all our rescue and first aid equipment at the waters edge. We are very grateful to SHB 4x4 hire for assisting us with this. Around 150 students attended the event with the contest held on Rest Bay. Although the surf wasn't particularly big it was clean which was perfect for the competition. Despite the weather the event showed off Rest Bay as a top surfing destination to students from across the UK with some travelling from as far away as Hull." If you wish to donate to the Rest Bay Lifeguard appeal in order to replace their stolen quad bike please visit http:// www.virginmoneygiving.com and search for Rest Bay. CHRIS PAGE
