Land Grab

Posing On The Rocks

Dear Editor, Firstly, I would wholeheartedly like to second and support Mr Andrew Collier’s letter in September’s issue highlighting the management and use of land for car parking at Newton Beach by private landowners. I too am unhappy about what has been happening there.

In a similar vein, I would also like to highlight a brazen practice which has been taking place in Kenfig Hill, to which the local council seem to have no say over, or are apparently willing to turn a blind to, at the expense of other residents. That is to say, that over the last twelve months or more, at least six properties that back/edge on to Waunbant Road have apparently ‘engulfed’ common land not belonging to them by simply erecting fencing around plots of ground and claiming it as their own, thus greatly, in some cases, extending their property’s footprint, yet nobody has intervened to stop this. I would like to be assured, as no doubt would other residents, that this land has been legitimately and legally acquired by these properties?

Otherwise, what is to prevent any resident therefore, from choosing any plot of public land, erecting a fence around it and claiming it as their own, either to use themselves or to possibly make fraudulent financial gain later by then selling it off without declaring it? Two properties have already changed hands and I wonder if the Land Registry can confirm that the extra land was declared in each sale?

Dear Editor, I took this picture whilst walking my dog on Sunday morning (20th September). The photo doesn’t do the smell justice!

This is the bin to the entrance to the dunes via Cypress Gardens, Dan-y-Graig.

Clearly the good dog owners of Porthcawl are picking up their dog mess! It’s a shame that the council is not regularly checking this popular bin to empty it.

Could I suggest they provide a larger bin or empty it more often!

The Altering Altmark

Dear Editor, With the Carrier Bag levy about to start in England, we thought it was a good time to update people on what exactly happens to our carrier bag money at Home & Colonial.

Thankfully people in Wales are much more aware of the environmental issues and tend to bring their own bags.

However we feel it is really important that our customers understand that we do save the money and donate it to charity.

Happily then; we are able to let everyone know that following an appeal in the Seaside News for money to finish the Porthcawl Athletic Association Club House, we collected our carrier bag money and match funded this amount ourselves to donate £500.00 to the cause.

Previous to this H&C donated the monies to help the Sea Cadets buy a new boat. We take the levy very seriously and can reassure our customers that we will continue to donate this money to local capital projects.

Dear Editor, Many walkers on Sker Beach photograph the wreck of The Altmark and it is surprising how much it has changed over the years and under the tides.

Quick Sand At Newton Beach Dear Editor, I have lived in Nottage, Porthcawl for twelve years and have often walked on Newton beach. I was however, not aware of the potential hazards of this beauty spot until two weeks ago.

The small yellow sign saying “Beware soft sand / mud” gave no explicit details to someone who spent a childhood swimming in the North Sea on the South East coast of Scotland. I had a friend staying with me with her three young children. We spent hours on the beach before I, and a five-year-old girl decided to have a paddle. We had a long walk to the sea - the tide being so far out.

We were only ankle deep in water when Kayla started screaming and fell into the water. I took a step towards her and found myself knee deep in what I now know to be ‘mud.’ I was unable to reach her as I was stumbling on sharp, uneven rocks. She managed to get out of the water, still screaming, and I, stepping on more rocks, lost my balance and fell in. I then realised I was covered in a thick coating of mud. We both had cuts on our feet. I have Lymphoedema in my left leg as a result of an operation and radiotherapy for cervical cancer. Any breakage of the skin with this condition can cause Cellulitis when a wound can become infected. I appreciate this is a privately owned beach and the council has no responsibility for it; but having now heard of similar incidents occurring on previous occasions, and no mention on the Council website to warn holiday makers, I find this very worrying.

What Does It Take Dear Editor, What does it take to get a blue badge? A friend has been turned down twice while waiting for a hip and knee replacement and having osteoarthritis, despite a supporting medical letter. The reason given by BCBC - their mobility would improve WHEN they had had the surgery. As we all know the waiting list for such operations can be, at the best, months, but often more than a year. In the mean time they had to have a lift to the Civic Office to ask about the blue badge and are no longer able to shop independently in Bridgend or Porthcawl town as they can not walk from the car parks.

Having been along the front of Porthcawl on a nice day there must be plenty of people who can answer this query as the double yellow lines are covered by people with blue badges!

SCHOOLS We started this term with some very good news. Last term the school had a visit from Estyn and the very successful report was published over the summer holidays. The inspectors were very impressed by what they saw during their week with us and made many positive comments. Overall the inspection team graded all aspects of work within the school as good. They also commented on how well behaved our pupils are and how enthusiastic they are towards their learning. We are very proud of the report and would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved with Porthcawl Primary School for all their hard work and commitment. We have started this year with lots of creative writing. After the success of our ‘We are Writers’ book a few years ago once again we are writing our own book. This year the title will be Amazing Animals and pupils are busy using their imaginations to write an incredible story. The finished book will be available at our book fair in November and will include a story written by every pupil in the school.

It is always a pleasure on the first day of a new school year to see all the pupils dressed so smart in their uniform, and this year was no exception. We would like to offer a warm welcome to our new pupils, you will be very happy here at Afon y Felin.

Congratulations to Charlie Murphy and Holly May Curtis, who have been chosen as Head Boy and Head Girl. These are very responsible roles, besides school duties, they often represent our school at church services etc. The elections have taken place for our School Council. The candidates addressed the school in the morning, and the votes cast and counted in the afternoon. The children elected are: Sofia Chayka, Sam Lewis, Sam Matthews, Ellis Pride, Joseph Reeve, Charlie Murphy, Alfie Price, Rhianna Knowles, Jay Thomas and Charlie Perham. They will meet at regular intervals and discuss the ideas of all the pupils. The Reading Café is open to Reception children and their parents - all are welcome for a cup of tea and story time. Family Learning is on Friday mornings -an opportunity to see how your children are taught, and to spend time with them in the school environment.

A Busy Term Ahead!

Pil Primary School are back after the summer break and are raring to go. The school diary is full of exciting activities!

Looking ahead, the Book Fayre will be in school to promote the importance of good reading habits. We have Super Ambassadors Workshops and Pandemonium Theatre Company visiting the school. The school choir is performing in KPC at the MacMillan Cancer Research Coffee Morning and at St James Church. The school will be holding their Harvest Festival in Pisgah Chapel on Friday 16th October at 10am. Year 6 have begun their transition activities with a visit to Cynffig Comprehensive School for Welsh, Spanish and Music activities.

Didn’t They Do Well!

Staff and pupils at St. Clare’s School, Porthcawl celebrated another year of excellent GCSE results. 92% of the pupils gained 5 or more A* to C grades, contrasting favourably with the 67% achieved by all students in Wales, with 88% of them including Maths and English.

Overall, 45% of the grades were A* or A – a three-year high.

Among the successes were straight A*/A grade students Shereen Hassn, Morgan Holt and Siobhan Lock.

In the Chief Inspector’s Annual Report, Mrs Sloggett’s ‘Helping Hands’ Transition Programme has been identified by Estyn as an area of “Outstanding” practice. This scheme is designed to make the transition from primary to comprehensive school as simple and easy as possible for pupils; especially those who are particularly nervous or anxious about making the move.

Towards the end of the summer term we welcomed 190 pupils from 16 different primary schools to Porthcawl Comprehensive School to enjoy an exciting and fun packed day with us. Pupils followed a sample timetable, enjoying lessons in music, drama and science to name just a few. Lunch was served in the school canteen and Year 6 pupils were ably supported by Year 12 students.

It was lovely to see the Year 6 pupils mixing so well and already beginning to make new friends. Now they are Year 7 pupils at PCS, they say the day gave them a real insight in to what comprehensive school was all about and it allayed some of their fears about leaving primary school.

Thursday 1st October sees our transition programme starting all over again with our Year 6 Open Evening for next year’s intake.

SCHOOLS Cynffig’s Best Ever Results

Hello again. I think my headline gives it away: in almost every measure of performance, our GCSE results this summer were the best the school has ever achieved. Against ever-increasing pressures, ‘strengthening’ of subject specifications, and on-going shifts in performance measures, we demonstrated more clearly than ever that smaller schools can be outstandingly effective in nurturing pupils to be the best they can. Our annual Presentation Evening takes place early in the academic year to acknowledge and celebrate pupils’ successes, and on September 10th, we once again packed the Hall with proud parents, friends and pupils to recognise publicly their achievements. We were joined this year by an exemplary guest speaker: as one of our immensely successful ex-pupils, Oliver Huntley shared with our audience some of the ways in which Cynffig had prepared him for his career, and the ways in which its values, ethos and relationships were the foundations of his achievements. His enduring affection for the school was heart-warming, and reminded me that the legacy of great schools is life-long. Our Open Evening is on 30th September - we would be delighted for you to come along and see why Cynffig is simply unique.

The start of another school year and the summer holidays are resigned to the distant past. We all enjoyed those endless hot days! The children returned to school looking as smart as paint dressed in new uniforms and are working hard in their new classes. Our new intake of Nursery Tiddlers have been exploring their new surroundings and making new friends.

Police liaison officer, PC Carpenter, began his timetable of invaluable PSE lessons while Mrs Pauline Lewis, Steve Locke and Father Craig have been leading many of our assemblies, which are based around our monthly values. September’s value was ‘Trust’.

PC Carpenter will also be providing an awareness-raising session on 5th October at 3.45pm in the school hall. The theme will be ‘New Psychoactive Substances’ (legal highs) and all parents are encouraged to attend the half hour presentation.

The PTA held a Garden Party for our Bangladeshi Visitors who are experiencing school life in the principality as part of the ‘Connecting Classrooms’ initiative. We wish Miss Lawrence and Miss Davies a safe and rewarding reciprocal visit in October.

The PTA’s AGM will take place at school @3.30pm on 9th October. New members are very welcome.

Transition plays a big part at West Park where we work hard to build our pupils confidence year on year, preparing them for changes and future challenges. It is wonderful to hear positive comments from parents, “Rosa recognised Mrs Stradling from her language and play sessions and had already made some friends by the time she started nursery. She enjoyed the stories and the crafts in the Woodland!” Another Mum said, “The Comp transition was a fantastic introduction to learning in a much larger environment.

Jake felt really calm and the sessions really helped to dispel the urban myths!” My daughter said to me this week “I’ve realised moving to the Comp was no big deal”.

What encouraging words from Cerys who was particularly apprehensive about the transition process.

Marc Griffiths of Get Out Your Box delivered a wonderful assembly full of positive messages about making good and healthy lifestyle choices – a fantastic introduction to the term. Coming up… school trips, cycle training and school elections. Hwyl fawr!

Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School Congratulations to our pupils and parents on our outstanding A Level and GCSE examination results. At A Level, 38% of A Level grades awarded were A* - A and 80% were grades A*- C. At GCSE, over 88% of students gained five or more GCSEs at grade C and above. These are excellent results, a huge improvement on last year and testimony to the hard work, commitment and dedication of our staff and students.

News New Era Underway For Our ‘Cultural Services’ This month marks the start of a new era for local libraries, arts services, some community centres, and venues including the Grand Pavilion.

Those ‘cultural services’ have all now transferred to be run in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council by the new Awen Cultural Trust Ltd. These services are currently in a strong position, but reduced funding from central government means that we have to find new ways of delivering many council services in the long term.

So the timing is therefore right for this development, which instead offers a different but bright future for cultural services.

The services will be run in partnership with the council, similar to the way that Halo Leisure Ltd operates local leisure centres.

That partnership has already resulted in modernised facilities for residents to enjoy and I am sure that there will be many similar benefits for cultural services.

We strongly believe that the new Awen Cultural Trust will help us to achieve our ambitions of encouraging a passion for reading and knowledge, particularly among the younger generation, and putting culture and learning at the heart of our local communities.

Keeping Children Safe In The Digital Age Children today are far more technologically aware than when I was growing up.

Whether it is using social media, playing games online, using apps to send and receive messages, videos and images or just surfing the web, they can encounter people from all over the world without even leaving their bedroom.

The downside of this is that it also makes them vulnerable to potential exploitation – and in a digital age, children in Bridgend County Borough are at just as much risk as anyone else.

Latest statistics show that almost 20,000 Welsh children received support from children’s services last year, and 3,100 of them had to be protected from abuse.

That’s why I am urging parents to take part in the NSPCC ‘Share Aware’ campaign.

This excellent resource helps to keep children safe by making families think about the information they might be sharing online. It keeps parents up to date about latest news and trends, and provides useful information on issues such as privacy ratings and safety settings.

Helping Young People Into Work, Training New Cycle Route & Bike Hire Scheme & Education Further details have been revealed about the new cycle route The Welsh Liberal Democrats’ Young Person’s Concessionary Bus Fare Scheme, which was launched this month, will benefit over 5,000 young people in the Bridgend Council area.

The scheme will enable 16, 17 and 18 year olds to receive a one-third discount on all of their journeys by bus, including the TrawsCymru network of longer-distance services.

This is the direct result of the budget deal negotiated by the Welsh Liberal Democrats in September 2014 in which we agreed to allow the Welsh Government’s annual budget to pass in exchange for funding for a range of key Welsh Liberal Democrat policies, including almost £15m for a Young Person’s Concessionary Bus Fare scheme.

The scheme will be available to 110,000 16-18 year olds in Wales, 5,205 in Bridgend.

Welsh Liberal Democrats believe strongly that affordable public transport is key to enabling young people to access work, education, training and apprenticeships.

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 and wish to apply for this pass go to https://mytravelpass.gov.wales/eng/ and register your interest. A colour photograph, a postcode confirming you live in Wales and proof of age will ensure a pass is sent to the address you provide.

The scheme will improve the current pathways so that the route that already runs between Rest Bay and Mallard Way can be extended to run all the way around to Trecco Bay. The path will move on to the lower promenade between the Seabank Hotel and the RNLI Station, before passing the marina and following the Eastern Promenade. It will then travel along New Road and across the Sandy Bay Caravan Park before finishing at Trecco Bay Holiday Park. The 4km route will be open to cyclists and walkers and will link local attractions, facilities and businesses. News National Carers Day

Best Use Of Technology In The NHS

National Carers Day is taking place this year on Friday 20th November. Each year Carers Wales holds this day to bring organisations from across the country together to support carers in their communities.

The aims of the day are simple; to ensure that carers know their rights, how to access the help and support they are entitled to and to raise awareness of the needs of carers. Every year more than 2 million people take on a new caring role, with this comes a network of services and entitlements - which are difficult to navigate. This means that carers, new and experienced, often miss out on financial and practical support. A survey conducted by the Princes Royal Trust for Carers in July 2010 found that 53% had borrowed money as a result of their caring role. Furthermore 35% had missed out on state benefits for the simple reason that they did not realise they could claim. Supporting carers is so important and in many cases they are missing out.

New figures obtained by Plaid Cymru has found that over 350 personal computers used by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board are still operating 15-year-old Windows software – even though Microsoft stopped supporting the system in April last year.

The software giant’s decision - known since 2007 - means that any of those 361 PCs still using the Windows XP technology may not be protected from malicious software such as viruses and Trojans.

This means data could be stolen, machines could operate less effectively than they should, and in the worst case scenario, could stop working altogether. Computer experts have warned that public sector organisations continuing to use windows XP are demonstrating a “troubling lack of regard for security”.

Microsoft also ceased providing any support for the Malicious software update tool over the summer.

These figures show just how much work remains to be done to ensure our NHS is making the best use of technology. Although the health board has policies for upgrading computers, this shows that the security issues raised by continued use of Windows XP have to be taken seriously.

Plaid Cymru wants to create a modern, digital, paperless NHS where staff work using the most advanced technology to benefit patients to ensure the best outcomes.

Dedication & Passion Of Volunteers One of the things that makes a real impression on me when I’m out and about making visits is the dedication and passion of the volunteers I meet, doing invaluable work in every walk of life.

We all have heard this summer about the lives saved by our local RNLI, so I decided to pay their station in Porthcawl a visit and find out more about their work protecting South Wales’ coastline – and also say thank you.

These volunteers are amazingly brave, skilled and committed young people, who literally risk their own lives to save others’ on a daily basis. The amount of discipline they apply in being ready to tackle any life-threatening situation at sea at incredibly short notice is something we can all admire.

The outcome of their work – keeping the waters safe for us all to enjoy - is of course something we should all be grateful for.

FEATURES News From The Talbot Readers of the Seaside News who follow this column will know of our intentions to integrate the Talbot Centre with the Rees Centre, the building back to back with the Talbot, recently gifted to the Talbot

by Scope, a charitable organisation for people with disabilities.

Thanks to the team of men from Bethel Community Church, who turned up on a Saturday morning some weeks ago, ready with sledge hammers and power tools, we have now demolished the stage. The next phase will be to build two store rooms where the stage was, with a corridor and doors connecting both buildings.

ASDA Pyle has also been very generous to the Talbot. They have donated £300 to us – our thanks to Claire Davies, the Community Life Champion at ASDA Pyle. We have purchased two patio sets for the walled garden area (ready for the sunshine!) and four card tables for the Partner Whist evenings, every Wednesday at 6.30pm.

We are now entering our autumn diary of events, with Christmas bookings already being taken for our various functions.

News From RMBI Albert Edward During September a number of children from the Burrows Nursery attended RMBI Albert Edward. We had recently read a study about a care home abroad who had opened a nursery on site and found that both residents and children benefited from this interaction. Whilst we can’t put a nursery onsite we looked into the possibility of incorporating children within our activities.

Luckily we had some contacts in the local nursery and the managers were very keen to work together on such an exciting project.

It was wonderful experience for the residents and the children alike to take part in a ceramic session together. It was so nice to see Pheonix helping Val to paint and listen to Margaret Morris

reminisce about her years as a nursery nurse. Dotty Spotty Pottery come to the home on a monthly basis allowing the residents to partake in Ceramic and Pottery classes which gives our residents a sense of self-worth when they are presented with their work of art.

It was a delight to see and hear the interaction and enjoyment that took place between the residents and children during this activity and as a result of this beneficial experience it is certainly something that we will continue with and have planned future sessions.

The Bridgend Branch of the Glamorgan Family History Society meet at the Len Evans Centre, Aberkenfig, on the third Monday of each month. The doors open at 7pm and the evening starts at 7.30pm. Taking place on 10th October in Merthyr Tydfil is the largest Family History Fair in Wales. It is packed full of interesting stalls relating to local and out of area family history. During the day a variety of free talks are given on family history topics, and experienced volunteers will be on hand to help research for any difficult to find ancestors.

Our run of frequent call outs continued through August and into September, however, thankfully whilst all required our assistance, none of them were too severe. The new Coastguard helicopter that is based at RAF St Athan completed a winching training exercise off Porthcawl on the 9th September. It created quite a stir locally and this aircraft should be a regular sight when it takes over from the RAF Sea King helicopter on search and rescue activities from the 1st October.

At the time of writing we were preparing to commemorate the sinking of the SS Cato in 1940 after it hit a mine off Nash Point. It was carrying barrels of stout from Ireland with the cargo washing ashore in Porthcawl. As a result this event was commemorated on the 19th September by teams attempting to smuggle a barrel from the harbour, up to Sker Point and on to the Prince of Wales in Maudlam. A big thank you from our team to Sian and Scott at the Farmers Arms, Nottage for supplying a barrel to help with our entry. Hopefully a picture will be in the next edition.

The Parc Supporting Families Volunteers at HMP Parc - Bridgend provide support services to people who are often marginalized within their communities. They provide opportunities for people to access support, advice and guidance through our family support helplines.

Our volunteers assist in the play provisions in the visits halls to create a positive experience when visiting, by providing an environment where young people can feel safe sharing the difficulties of having a father or loved one in prison.

Our volunteers assist in specialised visits including the Learning Together Club and Family Centred Visits, as well as our Family Intervention programmes. These interventions aim to provide positive opportunities for families to participate in activities to help maintain and enhance family relationships, with the aim of reducing re-offending and intergenerational crime.

The Parc Supporting Families group are inspirational, from diverse backgrounds, and highly valued by the people that they support. This group of multi-award winning volunteers operate with passion within a highly emotive environment, with a diverse range of individuals and are faced with difficult and emotional situations on a daily basis.

As our September meeting was on the Queen’s special day we started with a heartfelt rendering of God Save the Queen.

We welcomed two new members and the possibility of three more next month. So we must be doing something right! A new institution is a ‘small change box’ for members to clear their purses. It’s amazing how much it raised and will go to charity eventually.

We have had an enjoyable afternoon tea at the Grove Golf Club – a chance to socialise and now a regular summer date in our calendar.

At the meeting names were taken for the Federation Christmas lunch - yes I know Christmas! But it won’t be long! National TG news was given, also the latest news from our twin Guild in Mansfield.

Our speaker was Mr Doug Jones who was ‘searching for the spirit of the 1950s’. It was a fascinating talk reminding us of the events leading up to the 1950s and the happenings of the next decade.

It certainly sent our minds back to that era.

FEATURES Tools For Africa Tools for Self Reliance Our Photo this month shows our sponsored trainee mechanics in Bo, Sierra Leone, as that country lifts itself out of the Ebola crisis. There is a great need for auto mechanics as travel restrictions have now been lifted. We sent kits earlier this year through the Sierra Leone Council of Churches.

We send four different kinds of vehicle and motor cycle repair kits, for individuals to equipping a small garage which could have six or seven mechanics often working in rural areas. The largest kit has 96 tools. A kit comprises of the usual spanners, wrenches, hammers, sockets, screwdrivers, files, tyre levers, drills, wheel braces, pliers, vices, valve lifters, pumps, screw jacks, welders, ball joint separators and torques. We are always short on stock of the latter six items. We are grateful to Rodney Knight in Porthcawl who is instrumental in making sure each crate of mechanics’ kits is complete according to specification.

Local Scout Movement support Marie Curie Aware that many people are diagnosed with a terminal illness, other than cancer, there is a new name and a new focus to the long established charity. Marie Curie Care and Support in Terminal Illness will now provide care to people at the end of their lives whatever the cause.

The Scouts are helping to raise funds through the sale of bulbs so that more people in our area can receive the care and support of Marie Curie nurses and the communities themselves can look forward to a display of daffodils come the spring.

So, if you want to help the young people of your town help others, then get in touch with your local Scout Troop. They would be thrilled if you could sponsor a bulb and, come spring, you will enjoy the flowers too!

Life With Porthcawl Lions It has been a good time for Porthcawl Lions. Two newcomers, Sue Carey and Doug Jones, were welcomed as full members at the last business meeting; everyone wishes them a long and happy time with Porthcawl Lions.

Then Vice District Governor, Godfrey Morris, presented Rita Hamlin, a member of the Care and Trinity Support Club with a trophy for outstanding endeavour for her courage and stoicism at the Bob Cook Games. As previously mentioned, the games are organised each year by Lions’ Clubs for the disabled to enjoy a day of fun and sport. Rita fell, but got up and finished her race when a bad wrist fracture was discovered which unfortunately meant an operation and a few nights in a Swindon hospital throughout which time she never moaned or complained; one very brave lady, I think you’ll agree.

With the summer over, now seems a quiet time for Porthcawl Lions, but members are busy planning the events for the festive season when Santa will spend Saturdays in his grotto and, hopefully, a few hundred brave and generous people will take part in the Boxing Day fun run.

Mynydd Cynffig WI met in the Talbot Centre on the 8th of September. We had a good turn out and a new lady who might join our WI. New members always welcome. Minutes were read and new business brought to our attention. We are looking forward to an evening with Mark Evans in Porthcawl during October. We will also be going to the Craft Spectacular in Margam Orangery during November - hoping to pick up Christmas presents as well as meeting old friends from other Women’s Institutes. The talk this month was titled ‘My Time in the Met’ by Helen Jones and had us riveted to our chairs with her tales of working in a London Police station. She told us of some of the famous people she had encountered and some of the famous and infamous cases she had worked on. A most enjoyable talk. Next months talk is by Steven Jarvis - his topic will be ‘Welsh Homes of Distinction’. If you fancy calling in - tea and biscuits are always available.

President Nora opened the September meeting with Jerusalem and welcomed a new guest. Final arrangements were made for our Centenary Lunch. Secretary Cynthia outlined upcoming events, Treasurer Margaret gave details of our Summer Fayre.

An exciting date to note is 16th April 2016 – when we celebrate our 50th Anniversary.

Then came the highlight of the evening when the musically talented Mike Boyle gave his presentation of the life of composer Ivor Novello together with a compilation of his music. Born in Cardiff in 1893 his first song was published at the age of 17.

His acting career began in 1919, and the first film appearance, in 1927, was directed by Alfred Hitchcock! Sadly his spirit was broken during a two month jail sentence for misuse of petrol coupons, but he continued composing until his sudden death in 1951. His music lives on today, often played on radio programmes. Thanks to the musical arrangement wizardry of Mike, members enjoyed seeing excerpts from the various films, and singing along to several lovely songs, including ‘Keep the home fires burning’, ‘Love is my reason’ etc. Refreshments were accompanied by a slice of Centenary cake.

After the raffle was drawn, the meeting closed with the Anthem, nostalgia ringing in our ears. Thanks again Mike.

Coychurch WI News Mary Evans, the vice president, ably conducted her first meeting and welcomed everyone present, she then invited the president Sandra Davidson to present a cheque for £450 to Jade Owen (Tree of Hope Charity) on behalf of the ‘Friends of WI’ - being the proceeds of the Ladies Ascot Day. The charity needs to raise approximately £60,000 to enable Jade to have life changing surgery in the USA; with further post-operative treatments and follow up consultations. To date they have raised about £37,000.

Following the business of the evening members then enjoyed extra social time with tea, coffee and biscuits as the expected guest speaker was unable to attend.

We have had a busy July and August with trips to the Flower Festival at St. Teilo’s Church in Gowerton, Garden Party at Margam Orangery and a visit to the beautiful village and Abbey at Laycock, with a tea stop at Chippenham - all of which were enjoyed immensely.

The guest speaker for Septembers meeting was Sylvia Scarf, who gave an hilarious account of her working life, the various positions she held, with both funny and sad experiences. It was good entertainment causing much laughter.

Congratulations to Anita Jeffrey for gaining third prize in the Floral Competition at the Glamorgan Federation annual show in Cornelly. Well done Anita.

Porthcawl Inner Wheel News Our President, Mary Emment-Lewis, welcomed members back after the summer break. The last official meeting was held in the Grove Golf Club on Tuesday 7th July. Members stood for a minute’s silence in memory of Marion Harries, a loyal member of Inner Wheel who passed away in July. Marion will be greatly missed by us all.

During August Sheila Burge arranged an afternoon tea for members at her home. This was a most enjoyable and successful event in spite of the inclement weather. Proceeds from the raffle and items for sale went towards the club funds.

Eileen Thomas gave a report on the final meeting of the Subscribers to The Rest. The report included a list of charities that have received money out of the profit from the sale, following the payment of all financial responsibilities and debts.

It was a sad ending to a wonderful Charity.

A Coffee Morning in aid of Inner Wheel Charities has been arranged to take place in Trinity Church 10.30am on Friday 30th October. There will be a Raffle and a variety of Stalls. Tickets are £1.50 including coffee and biscuits. Everybody is welcome. Hope to see you there.

Finance On October 3rd we will celebrate our tenth anniversary in business. Based in Porthcawl for the whole of that period, we are proud to serve the community in which we work and live.

Laleston Gardening Club

Jays belong to the crow family. They have a pinkishbrown body and black tail; look out for the dazzling azure flash on their wings and bold white rump as they fly away. Jays are shy birds and tend to see you before you see them. To warn all other birds in the area they issue a loud, harsh screaming call; the Welsh name Ysgrech y Coed is literally ‘Scream of the Wood’. Jays may stash up to 5,000 acorns during the autumn (each in a separate hiding place), some of which may end up in your lawn. With a specially adapted gullet, they can carry up to nine at a time, although three is more usual. Despite being infrequent visitors to gardens, around 10% of Garden Bird Watchers record Jays at this time of year.

Well, the annual show has come and gone for another year. The exhibits were first class with a wide variety. The sun came out so everyone was content. The Welsh cakes cooked on site were a great favourite as usual. Back to basics, in October it’s clearing up time, leaves need to be picked up, and perennials that have passed their best will need to be cut back. It is also time to divide herbaceous, perennials and don’t forget the rhubarb crowns.

Harvest fruit, beans and peas. Even with this short spell of an Indian summer it will soon be the last chance to mow the lawn, indeed some will need a bit of TLC. Dahlias, tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms can be lifted and stored. Plant daffodils, tulips and alliums for a cheerful spring display. Also, if you saved seeds from your perennials or biennials now is the time to plant them out, give them a good start before the weather changes. Autumn is an ideal time to plant clematis. Our allotment growers tell me they are planting autumn garlic and onion sets for cropping next summer. First lecture October 12th.

A better Choice, A Better Life

Statins Up to four million people have been wrongly placed on statins, putting them at risk of side effects with little chance they will benefit from the drugs, doctors have warned. More than half of patients put on the cholesterol-lowering pills to prevent a first heart attack or stroke are in fact ‘ineligible’ for the treatment, a Birmingham University study found. It suggests that more than £100 million a year is being wasted because GPs have a scattergun approach to prescribing the drugs. Over the past decade the number of people in Britain on statins has risen from five to eight million. The drugs lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in those at medium and high risk, but they can also produce side effects in up to a fifth of takers. These can include muscle pain, fatigue, stomach upsets, sleep disturbance and erectile dysfunction.

Ode To An Apple Tree

We planted you in our garden many years ago When little did we realise the extent to which you’d grow.

You were a mere sapling bought from a well known store Whose name then was very well known but rarely heard any more.

For pollination purposes we planted at your side Two other types of apple tree which served you ere they died.

New folk moved into the area and planted some fruit trees So you were given attention by butterflies and bees.

We tarred and sprayed and pruned you according to the book You rewarded us in plenty for all the pains we took.

Adorning the Spring-time garden with your blossom pink and white Whilst your apples later in the year were a very welcome sight.

After picking your apples we always made sure that they were healthy and strong Then gave loads to family and neighbours and friends who came along.

We peeled and pulped your apples they were so good to eat So apple tarts and sauces became a special treat.

Sadly we thought we had lost you one dark wintry night A salt-gale came and blasted you and you were a woeful sight.

But we smiled again the following year when your buds began to grow.

Your trunk grew larger year by year and soon it was clear to all With branches out-spread you’d grown sturdy and strong, high above the garden wall.

With sprawling branches and wind-swept leaves you were causing stress all around And we knew with regret that the time had come to do what was vital and sound.

The skilful gardeners came to our aid armed with axe and saw Soon your life was over, no apples now to store.

Then in the depth of winter when we burned your fragrant wood We’d think of the tree in our garden – to forget you we never could.

Gazing at the fire those memories were as sweet as they could be Of sitting in the summer garden in the shade of our dear apple tree.

The Voice

In times of trouble, I heard the voice.

So gentle, so sweet, so full of love.

The voice seemed ancient, full of experience.

I knew it had spoken to many people in past times and that it would speak to many in the future.

The voice had always existed, and always would.

It somehow spoke truth to me.

It knew me, even though I did not know it.

Even though I did not know the voice, I knew it was true, there was no falseness, no harm.

The voice.

It was so comforting, it searched my heart with love.

It wanted to become my friend.

It showed me a place of peace.

A place of beauty.

The voice had many promises, promises it could keep.

Promises of love, of happiness.

The voice wanted to express it’s hidden love and affection.

But I had to say yes.

The voice, it would not force itself upon me.

It gently asked me to invite him in.

Who’s voice was it?

Did it belong to somebody?

In my suspense, I asked.

Who is behind the voice?

There was no other voice like it.

It once again told me of love, a love so powerful nothing could stand in it’s way.

It showed me a place of healing, of forgetting.

A place I never thought existed.

But I was wrong, oh, so very wrong.

The voice said ‘Now is the time’.

It showed me a way I had never seen before.

Once again I asked ‘Who is behind the voice’?

Then very gently I heard the most beautiful name.

The name was Jesus.

I had to respond.

The voice took me into the future, a new start, a new beginning.

The voice has been there since that day.

It has never left me, and it never will.

It will guide me all the days of my life.

It will guide me always It will guide me to heaven where, one day, I will see, face to face, Jesus, the man behind the voice.

Arts Come And Sing!

Do you find yourself singing in the shower, where no one can hear you? Then it’s time to step out of the wet and join Cor Bro Ogwr for a morning of singing together. Perhaps you enjoy singing already, or have always wanted to give it a go? Have you wondered what it would be like to sing with a mixed choir and imagine yourself one of the choirs on Britain’s Got Talent?

(We’re not there yet...) Or sing under the baton of Wales’ answer to Gareth Malone? Yes, that’s our young and handsome conductor, Nick Bromilow.

We will be singing music for all tastes; some well known pieces from musicals, Welsh songs, bits of light opera, and learning a new piece of Bruckner. Don’t worry if you can’t read music - not all of us do - and don’t worry about what you think you sound like! The aim is to enjoy singing with our choristers in a friendly and supportive environment. You don’t need to bring anything but your voice; we will provide music, refreshments and fun.

Forget the Saturday shopping routine and do something different.

Bridgend Male Choir October 2015 Choir performances commence on Saturday, 3rd with its Annual Concert at Tabernacle Welsh Congregational Church on Derwen Road from 7.00 pm. The Choir is delighted to have secured as its guest, soprano, Ellen Williams. The hugely talented Ellen has made great strides in her relatively short career and she will enjoy the piano accompaniment of Rhiannon Williams-Hale. The Choir’s Musical Director, Rhiannon can expect a busy evening and in turn she will have the accompaniment support of Scott Williams on organ and on piano, guest Ryan Wood, the latter having got to know the choristers well after stepping in several times in recent months.

The Choir’s varied Annual Concert programme will include a number of items set to be included in its latest CD, to be recorded at the month end in readiness for the Christmas market. With trips planned to Pembroke, Chepstow, Birmingham and Dublin, choristers have much to look forward to. Porthcawl Male Choir

Porthcawl Male Choir’s Annual Concert featuring TV stars Richard and Adam took place at the Grand Pavilion on Saturday 5th September and was a resounding success. The concert was a total sell out and the audience was most appreciative of both the choir and of our guests - the talented operatic finalists of the Britain’s Got Talent TV show. Their performance of a varied and popular range of operatic pieces showed how deserving these two brothers from Angelsey were of that accolade. The choir had, amongst our ranks a number of new members who were on the Grand Pavilion stage for the first time, although one or two had won their spurs at WAMC’s combined choir concert in London’s Royal Albert hall in May. The choirs’ most ambitious piece was Bizet’s ‘Pearl Fishers’ whilst the rest of the repertoire was composed of a variety of both old and new including the lively ‘Rhythm of Life’ and the quieter rendering of ‘What a Wonderful World’. As ever we are grateful to our musical team of MD Mair Jones, accompanists Richard Davis and Beryl Cullen - who have worked so hard rehearsing us for this concert.

Martyn Knight is set to direct his first production for Porthcawl based theatre company, Phoenix Theatre. com. Martyn has performed in many West End productions over the years including ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’, ‘Metropolis’ ‘Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and ‘South Pacific’. “I was thrilled when Phoenix asked if I would work with the company on their next production which is ‘Bouncers and Shakers’. Although time spent behind the camera, shooting a film, forms an essential and highly visible part of the process, it only represents a fraction of the work that goes into most productions. The output of my company is mainly local history documentaries, so typically the first step is to research the subject thoroughly to establish all the important facts, from which the story takes shape. Once the ‘narrative form’ has been worked out, filming can begin, and usually takes several weeks. This is certainly the interesting and often strenuous bit, carrying heavy gear around for numerous set-ups, and when the processed film has come back from the lab - these days in the form of digital files - editing can begin. Regular readers will know that I shoot traditional film, rather than digital video.

If editing and filming are allowed to overlap, there is a good chance of shooting additional scenes, as determined by the way the edit is progressing. An edit can take several weeks, including the laying of sound tracks for music and effects, and then the narrative is written and recorded, and the sound mixed. From start to finish, it is a task that invariably takes several months, if not the best part of a year.

Belated birthday greetings to Dave ‘Murf’ Murphy. Murf is a big supporter of original music, but what a lot of people don’t know is that he did a British tour back in the late 1990s with Cheryl Beer, performing to thousands of fans at some of Britain’s festivals, supporting the likes of Squeeze and Bob Geldof. Cheryl and I had the same promoter, so played a lot of gigs together, something a lot of pub bands can only dream of doing!

Big Event For Small Town Porthcawl is to stage Radio 4’s Any Questions programme, with Jonathon Dimbleby. Hosted by Porthcawl U3a as part of their 20th Birthday Celebrations, it will be held at All Saints Church in the centre of the town.

The popular radio programme, which has been running since 1948, has a panel of politicians, experts and celebrities sharing their views on the issues of the day.

Porthcawl U3a (University of the 3rd Age) was established in 1995 and now has over 500 members, mainly retired and enjoying as many of the 35 Interest Groups (crafts, games, languages, study areas, exercise) outings, talks and social activities as they choose. The Sorcerer By Gilbert And Sullivan At The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards will present a charity performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera ‘The Sorcerer’, at 7.30pm. This opera is the second of the full length Savoy Operas. The music is fresh and lively and the plot is among the funniest being related to that of The Mid Summer Nights Dream. The performance will clearly provide an evening of delightful musical entertainment to remember.

Since starting in 1994, the company has raised well over £55,000 for local and national charities. This year, the proceeds will be divided between Macmillan, for cancer support, GLAZE for prostate cancer research and The Save the Children Fund.

Porthcawl Tai Chi Update The Swimming Dragon School began in Porthcawl in the year 2000 as the only organisation in Wales dedicated to the Sun Family Style of Tai Chi. The instructor John made it non profit, with a two hour Monday morning class at Awel-y-Mor charging £1 per hour. Ten years later students opened their own profit making clubs so John invited them to form a new Welsh Sun Style Association with all students paying £1 per hour to receive John’s tuition, even though they paid £3 per hour at their new profit making Clubs. One club refused to join so John decided to charge £2.50p per hour for that club’s students expecting to persuade their club to join.

Last year, instructors of the Sun Style Tai Chi Association of Wales who were also instructors of the UK Sun Style organisation were ordered by the UK association to close down the Welsh Association. John alone refused so the UK association revoked John’s membership.

Only instructors belonging to the Welsh Association can now legally teach John’s special copyright “Five Phase” programme he teaches at his advanced Monday class and a new Friday beginners class, both £2 per hour.

Bridgend Hockey News Bridgend Hockey Club is one of the oldest clubs in Wales founded in 1896. In total at the moment we have 120 members ranging between the ages of 7 and 70 years old. There are three Men’s teams and two Women’s teams; as well as a development side - which consists of older and younger players who are new to hockey and wish to participate in the ladies section of the club. There are also Youth training sessions being held for under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 18 teams which take part in their own tournaments throughout the season.

As a club last year we were very successful. Both the ladies’ teams were promoted up a league - Ladies First team going as Champions, and one of the Men’s teams won the Welsh Cup in their tournament. Joining this, over the recent summer as a club we were proud to have four lady players and two men players representing Wales in the Masters European Championship in London. From this huge achievement six others will be going on to represent Wales in the World Championship in Australia next year.

If you are intrigued and fancy giving hockey a go, or are a player with lots of experience, Bridgend Hockey Club are currently looking for female goalkeepers. Come down to Pencoed Comprehensive School Monday night 7.30 - 9pm and get to know lots of interesting and high spirited players in the ladies section. Learn and improve your skills and techniques before adventuring onto the pitch.

Porthcawl Brothers Triumph in Tenby Iron Man Robert & Alex Winkler successfully completed The Iron Man Triathlon in Tenby, after a year of grueling training and dedication. They swam 2.4 miles (approx 2hrs), cycled 112.6 miles (approx 7/8hours) and ran 26.2miles (a marathon) all in one day!

Porthcawl RFC Under 7’s Another season commences. For some it will be their first taste of rugby for others they will be entering their second season.

The age group is at full capacity and the boys have been training well during the off-season.

This year and next it will be tag rugby, where the aim is developing skill, evasiveness, passing and finding space…the boys have this in abundance!

They played their first match away on the 13th September against Llantwit Fardre. The boys were simply great and scored 21 tries against 7. The pleasing thing for the coaches was the way they played, passing the ball wide (not running across the pitch) and not one forward pass. Added to this was their terrierlike tagging, stopping the opposition scoring.

We are looking forward to a very exciting season - the boys are ‘chomping at the bit’.

Tap It Out August was a month for our newest members. First Scott Sidoli Kenny, who has only been riding 5 months continually, puts in 200 miles a week. And secondly Ricky Williams who managed to ride 1042 miles in 16 days to complete the Strava Tour de France challenge. This was an incredible achievement because the allocated time is 23 days. Well done both. Special mentions to Mark Jenkins in gaining his first podium finish in the Swansea heart foundation ride, finishing 2nd overall. Nicky Morgan completed his Newcastle to London 24hr ride at the end of August, totalling 310miles in 20hrs beating last year’s winning time by 2hrs. An excellent month for the club and well done all! The club has introduced a Tap It Out Shift Workers Ride.

Sport Porthcawl Parkrun Records Tumble

The weekly Saturday morning Porthcawl Parkrun has continued to be well supported by local and visiting runners over the summer. There are regularly over 200 finishers supported by around 20 volunteers every week who make it all possible. The 125th run in August saw the course record, previously held

by Simon Jones broken by Bridgend based Cardiff AAC runner Jonathan Hopkins in a time of 15:24. The previous week ex-world triathlon champion, Helen Jenkins had set a new female course record of 16:40. It’s not all about the fastest runners though with many of our regulars having completed 50 or 100 runs to qualify for the coveted club t-shirts, while going on to run in other local and national events. We welcome anyone of any age or ability and as a result local running clubs have seen a growth especially in new runners. Our next themed Fancy Dress Run will be on Elvis weekend – 25th September. Taking On The Bristol Channel For Charity Taking on the Bristol Channel is no mean feat for any type of craft especially when you consider it has the second biggest tidal flow in the World! Yet Glenn Clatworthy and Sam Moore, who were both crowned World Champion Ocean Men last year at the World Championships in Montpellier, France, decided to do just that. Not only happy to cross the channel but to paddle on their ocean racing kayaks from Coney Beach in Porthcawl to Ilfracombe in Devon and then paddle back to Porthcawl all in the same day! The paddle turned out to be 27miles each way so a 54 mile trip due to the tide and currents. It took them 3 and a half hours to paddle to Ilfracombe and 4 hours to paddle back to Porthcawl, both Glenn and Sam were exhausted after the paddle but they were determined to finish as it was to raise money for the Sandville Self Help Centre in Kenfig. A big thank you must go out to local fisherman Abe Prescott and lifeguard Justin Thomas for keeping a watchful eye on the boys on their way over. Porthcawl Lifeguard Club Our nippers have again performed above expectations, gaining top ten finishes in both sea and beach events at Whitmore bay nipper carnival held at Barry island on Sunday the 13th of September.

Despite a cold and blustery morning everybody gave 100 percent in the sea events, this was followed by a much brighter afternoon and some enjoyable competition in the flags and sprint events.

Our juniors were also in action earlier in the month when the club played host to the Welsh surf lifesaving championships for juniors and masters at Coney Beach. This was a very successful weekend allowing our juniors to compete against the best in Wales on their own beach.

Also a great success was our Round the Bay swim held at the end of August which attracted its largest entry yet.

Both these events generate much needed revenue for the club - which wouldn’t be possible with out the hard work of club members, so a big thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort yet again.

Southerndown & Ogmore Surf Report Mid September and the coast has fallen quiet. The holidays are over, the blue seas turn to grey, the winds change to chilly and the evenings start to draw in. The setting sun moves out to sea away from the Neon fun skyline of Porthcawl, as viewed from Ogmore.

This summer I can only remember 2ft surf on sunny days. There has been very little any bigger. As the seasons change back into autumn we hope to get some bigger surf at last.

Veteran Surfer Mr Nick Howell who follows the successes of SSLSC writes, collectively the team won 20 medals between them. Golds in tube rescue, board rescue, ski, flags and boards.

Medal and shield winners were Poppy Jenkins, Meriel Clode, Emily Jenkins, Mali Howell, Seren Alin, all from Ogmore by Sea and Southerndown, and representing Southerndown Surf Lifesaving Club at the Welsh Surf Lifesaving Championships on the 6th & 7th September.

This is an outstanding achievement as Southerndown Life Saving Club is one of the smallest clubs. Well done.

Rest Bay Nippers August saw the nippers going to Exmouth to take part in the Nipper British Championships. A great weekend was had by all, with the nippers, as always, making the club and coaches proud.

Lots of medals and points were picked up with big smiles all round. Rest bay nippers finished in 5th place - a fantastic result out of 30 clubs. The beach season in now coming to an end, but we’ve had another fantastic year with amazing kids. Everyone is looking forward to winter training ready for the still waters in the new year.
