LITTER

CHILDREN IN NEED WALK

Dear Editor, What a wonderful centre page in the Seaside News (July 2019 issue) showing us how hard our children of Porthcawl have worked with their amazing drawings/poems to remind us all about the impact of litter on their local environment. The posters around the town are a credit to you all, well done you guys, we are so proud of you. They also tell us about the 60 extra bins and the 40 replacement bins! My comment is: We applied for a bin outside Hope Chapel in Newton back in January as many people use the bus stop and car wash out side the Chapel along with the congregation of the church.  The litter in this area is unbelievable (I have photos if anyone would like to see them) out side the church and over the garden.  We try to keep it tidy and clean but it desperately needs a litterbin, we applied for one and were refused as Apparently and I quote “ there is one on the opposite side of the road!!!”  So a mother with 2 children and a push chair has to cross the road to use the bin, on a very busy corner otherwise the drinks and crisp bags etc are thrown over the church garden or dropped at the bus stop. Plus there are often beer cans and even bottles left there.   So I’m guessing that we applied to the wrong place and need to get the children of Porthcawl to help us out with this problem.  So once again BCBC/Council members can we appeal to you for a litterbin outside Hope Chapel/end of Newton Nottage Road/ next to the Globe garage and bus stop. And once again to the children in Porthcawl - thank you for your amazing project… I think it’s working! Joan Winkler, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, Three times stormy Autumn weather frustrated six year old Lowri Jade Lewis from setting off on her fourth consecutive sponsored walk in aid of Children In Need 2019. But on a late November Sunday morning a watery sun shone and Lowri, supported by her parents and grand-parents, got her latest challenge under way. The walk took her along a familiar four-mile pathway through the Kenfig Nature Reserve, on to Sker Beach and skirting the Pyle and Kenfig golf course on the way back to base. Thanks to the sponsorship of family members, friends and neighbours, working colleagues at Persimmon homes, and contributions from staff at the Royal Masonic Home and regulars at the Jolly Sailor public house in Newton, £370 has been added to the nationwide appeal. The Nottage Primary School pupil and her supporters have now been responsible for raising £1,145 over the last four years. Mark Lewis, Porthcawl

Reading Groups

Is to read more on you New Year Resolution list? Research has shown that being a member of a reading group makes you happier, widens your reading habits and helps you enjoy books even more. Reading can be a solitary activity but when a book has moved or stimulated you, it is rewarding to have the opportunity to discuss it with someone else. A reading group gives you that opportunity and encourages you to think a bit more about the books you read – why you like some and hate others, what genres appeal to you most and which characters you can relate to. Get in touch with your local library to discover what reading groups take place near you.

Book of the Month – ‘Final Option’ by Clive Cussler In Final Option, Juan Cabrillo fights the worst enemy from his past to the terrifying and unexpected ending created by the Grand Master of Adventure, Clive Cussler, in the latest action-packed thriller in his #1 New York Timesbestselling series. When the CIA realizes the identities of three American spies in Brazil have been compromised, they turn to Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon to rescue the agents. What seems a routine operation turns out to be a trap designed by Juan Cabrillo’s greatest enemy, a man driven by hate to seek the ultimate revenge? At the heart of the plot is a state-of-theart ship that is identical to the Oregon: same weaponry, same technology, and same ability to evade capture. The only thing it does not have is Cabrillo and his talented crew. However, will they be enough to go up against the one ship that rivals their own? The crew of the Oregon must piece together a series of disturbing events, including the mysterious sinking of a nuclear attack submarine and the possible discovery of a WWII-era weapon that was thought to be lost in the jungles of Brazil, in the ultimate game of cat and mouse. 10 | seaside news

Local history BEFORE THE COOP

By coincidence, the land upon which both Porthcawl Coops are located, once stood two schools. The Elementary Education Act ,1870, enabled the setting up of local school boards to provide education for all children. Consequently, The National School, Lias Road was built in 1873 with Mr William Rees being its first Headmaster. By 1900, the small fee required had been abolished, numbers attending had reached 250 and Mr William J Griffin had been appointed Head. By 1924, County Councils had taken over running state schools and the school became known as Porthcawl Nottage Council School. In 1952 it closed, and all staff and pupils moved to the new Nottage Primary School site. Conversely, Moorlands School for girls, New Road, was a privately run school. Its name originated from Moorlands Farm, Llantwit Major, from whence the Garsed family moved to Porthcawl. In 1892, daughters Ella and Ethel opened a small school in John Street (Marcus and Mabel today). Following the death of their father, their mother Harriet re- established their school in two houses in Gordon Road, which they named ‘Oletha.’ In 1900 they moved to the site in New Road, which, previously, had been a laundry. A tower was added to the building to accommodate boarders. The school closed c1940. Ceri Joseph

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS AT PORTHCAWL MUSEUM

Mid-December Porthcawl Museum held a successful Victorian Christmas event with home made seasonal treats on offer. The museum will close on the 21st December for maintenance and preparation of new exhibitions and reopen on the 15th February. However the shop and office will remain open on Saturday mornings during the closed period. School reports WEST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL

Staff, parents and pupils at West Park Primary School are extremely pleased with the recent judgments that Estyn have made about their school. The Inspectors found that the very high standards of Wellbeing are a notable strength of the school. Pupils display exemplary behaviour around school and they show very high levels of care, concern and empathy towards each other. A positive atmosphere for learning is created through strong working relationships between teachers, support staff and pupils. The school creates a rich and varied curriculum for the children which is helping them to successfully develop as ethical informed citizens. They engage in themes such as ‘Peace and Conflict’, ‘Incredible Oceans’ and ‘Banksy’ which it was found has helped pupils to develop a deep understanding of fairness and equality and has made them eloquent advocates for environmental reform. Pupil voice within the school is excellent and pupils are highly active in the various pupil voice groups which overall is having an exceptionally positive effect on developing pupils’ skills as responsible members of the school community. Children throughout the school use their Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and Thinking Skills across the curriculum and they make good progress throughout their time at the school. The head teacher Mrs Morgan stated that “I am thrilled with the report and it reflects how dedicated, committed and hard working school staff are in ensuring pupils receive an excellent range of learning experiences that they clearly enjoy, as well as continually striving to improve outcomes and progress of pupils” West Park Primary School can be found in the village of Nottage, applications for the Nursery and Reception classes are through Bridgend County Borough Council’s admissions procedure. The website address of the school is www.westparkprimary.org.uk/. If you would like to visit the school, please contact the school’s main reception.

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Newton Primary School has had a very exciting and enjoyable first term of this academic year. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, the school has been transformed into Newton University which has provided pupils with exciting learning opportunities they otherwise would may not have been able to partake in. A wide variety of courses enabled pupils to learn Spanish, needlework, how to relax, musical theatre, golf for beginners and how to compose and perform their own songs. Our singer song-writers course was led by our amazingly talented Mr. Jenkins who recorded the pupils’ work and shared it with a national radio station as well as locally. The Christmas song, written and performed by pupils from years 5 and 6, have been sung, hummed and whistled by many of our staff and pupils during the past month! As part of the our festive celebrations all of the pupils from Year 1 up to Year 6 visited the Sony Theatre in Bridgend College to see a wonderful production of Aladdin. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the pantomime and no doubt it inspired many of them to think about their own performance in the school Christmas Concerts. During our Christmas Concerts, it has been joyous to witness the growth in talent of our young learners. They have truly excelled themselves this year and they have been a credit to their parents and teachers. I would like to thank all the staff and pupils for their hard work this year and the parents for their continued support. If your child is aged 3 between September 1st 2019 and August 31st 2020 you are welcome to come along and have a look around our lovely Early Years setting at your convenience. Children who have just turned three will have the opportunity to attend an afternoon session every day from January 2020 in preparation for starting full time in the September 2020. Keep an eye open for our next fun-filled open day! Mr Gallagher Acting Head Teacher

THE BRIDGE We are almost to Christmas Break! Foundation Phase and KS2 have been participating in weekly samba drumming sessions with Mr Haughty and have most certainly ‘raised the roof off’. Our pupils have been enjoying Relax Kids this term and are beginning to find suitable ways to be mindful and calm. The festivities are now under way! We have visited The Tabernacl Church to watch ‘The Christmas Story’, along with a reward trip to Winter Wonderland. Pupils have been busy creating their own Christmas cards to send to their families and friends, which ties in with Article 14 and 8. Our KS3 and KS4 students have also been getting up to fun activities, such as a fun trip to Techniquest Planetarium. This is part of our Stargazers topic, which was rather joyful and links to Article 31. As well as the younger ones, our older students also went to Winter Wonderland, where most of the teachers stole the ice skating show! We welcomed back Mrs Morriss from Uganda, it was a wonderful time and it was exciting to see the photos from a whole different continent! Good news, we also raised £76 for Children In Need this term, and a big thank you goes to B-Leaf for an opportunity to decorate a tree we planted 12 years ago! We hope you all enjoy your Christmas Break. Hwyl Fawr! Ashton Hannam (Year 9)

School reports HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM PORTHCAWL PRIMARY

We had a really exciting first term packed full of interesting visits that motivated and inspired us all. Foundation Phase had fun learning in the woods and meeting the owls and kookaburras when Falconry UK visited. Key Stage 2, in addition to visiting Techniquest, enjoyed producing films and music at Sony, having tours and training sessions with players at the Cardiff Blues and Llanelli Scarlets stadia, learning first aid with St Johns Ambulance and creating healthy snacks with the wonderful Warburton’s staff. Once again, we celebrated Christmas in style with our brilliant Foundation Phase Show ‘Lights, Camel, Action – the musical’, a wonderful KS2 Carol Concert at Gilgal Baptist Church and visits to Hope Chapel’s amazing ‘Christmas Through the Keyhole’. We enjoyed singing carols at the doctor’s surgery and also with our lovely friends at Newton Care Home. We really can’t wait to see what the new term brings! We are extremely proud of our small community based school. We offer a warm and friendly welcome, small class sizes and superb standards. We have been a Welsh Government 1A Green Category school for the last five years! Online admissions for September 2020 Nursery have just opened. Please feel free to join us for our Nursery Open Morning on Thursday 16th  January from 9.30 to 10.30am so that you can have a tour of the school, chat with staff and spend time in our Nursery. BUSY HALF TERM AT NOTTAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL We held a Harvest service and our families were incredibly generous, donating over 184KG of food for the local food bank and for the first time we asked for pet food too, to help our furry friends whose owners may be having hospital treatments and their pets are in foster care. We raised over £1200 for BBC Children in Need, with Y5 and Y6 taking charge of the fundraising, they did a fantastic job – da iawn! Our choir have been singing in Portway surgery, local churches and Monkstone House to help everyone get into the Christmas spirit. We are also very proud to share that we have achieved the healthy schools ‘ wooden leaf’ award for our commitment to developing positive mental and emotional health and wellbeing and we would like to thank the children and staff who helped achieve this, in particular our very hardworking wellbeing team led by Mrs King-ardderchog. Finally our school Christmas fete was a huge success, thanks to our dedicated PTA and we are delighted to report we had a visit from the real Father Christmas! Nursery open morning 23rd January 2020 @9am; bring your toddler to see if they want to become a Tiddler! Join us for music and play, meet staff and have fun! Porthcawl Comprehensive School’s pupils have once again pulled out all the stops in their extraordinary efforts during our Charities week. They spent a successful morning discussing the Welsh used throughout our school with the Criw Cymraeg and were impressed with a tour of the school. Congratulations on our Welsh speakers of the week both pupils and staff. We will continue to develop our use of Welsh across the curriculum and welcome any ideas. Also, we were visited by Matthew Bunt from Eco-Schools Wales. He spent the day with our Eco-Committee, discussing Eco initiatives and exploring our learning environment. Matthew was very impressed and we are pleased to announce that we have achieved a second Eco-Schools Green Flag Award! Well done to all our Eco-Committee members! We hope to reduce the number of single use plastics in school so encourage all children to bring in a reusable water bottle. We continue to develop our outdoor learning environment and this week will be busy planting trees and creating a mini frog pond. We wish all readers a Happy & Healthy New Year!! Local news MAYORS UPDATE

Happy New Year to one and all. Christmas was a very busy period and I managed to attend 20 Christmas fayres, concerts and church services supporting many of our wonderful local organisations, choirs and charities. Highlights included the Cancer Research Lovelight Candle Service and the concert held by Porthcawl Community Singers – pictured below. The Mayors Community Awards scheme is now open for nominations; we want to recognise those people who quietly get on and do things in our community without recognition or reward. More details and the nomination process are available online via Facebook/Mayor of Porthcawl’s Community Fund, and also there are forms in English and Welsh at the town council offices in Mary Street. The winners will be announced and presented with their awards on March 27th at a very special evening at the Hi – Tide; tickets are just £15 to include dinner and entertainment from The Valli Boys and DJ Robbie Owen, they can be reserved by contacting me directly or email to mayorofporthcawlcommunityfund@ gmail.com CLLR GRAHAM WALTER Mayor of Porthcawl grahamwalter@porthcawltown.co.uk

HELP THE RNLI SURVIVE THE ‘PERFECT STORM’ The RNLI is facing a ‘Perfect Storm’ when the charity’s crews are busier than ever and our income is down. At Porthcawl lifeboat fundraisers work tirelessly to raise funds for the charity. Statistics show Porthcawl was the busiest lifeboat station in Wales during 2018 and we have a similar number of launches for 2019. Investing in the future of lifesaving is vital. Station crew are on standby twenty four seven, throughout the year. Some volunteers were working at their full time professions over the festive holidays as well as being available for ‘shouts’. One of those, a new crew member, Angharad Masson, is a staff nurse at POW Hospital. She has already played a vital role in a recent rescue when a casualty, who was not breathing, recovered following resuscitation. Several crew also volunteered as sea safety personnel at Porthcawl’s Christmas Morning Swim. To ensure the RNLI can continue its lifesaving work into the future, the charity is launching a major fundraising appeal ‘The Perfect Storm’ with the aim of raising £1.8M and recruiting 12,000 new supporters. To support the RNLI’s Perfect Storm appeal, helping to ensure the charity can continue saving lives at sea, please visit RNLI.org/ThePerfectStorm

FEARS FOR THE FUTURE OF TEAM SPORTS Fears for the future of team sports are mounting following BCBC’s plans to increase their fees. Cricket clubs face paying up to £27,500 per season while rugby and football clubs which could see charges hiked from £56 per match to £305. These rises are unreasonable and will jeopardise participation in team sports as well as reduce general activity. It also goes against Welsh Government policy. The council wants to encourage sporting clubs, town and community councils to take over these facilities and take control of their own costs. This can work especially if communities collaborate on pitch maintenance costs, for example. However, community bodies need to be fully informed of liabilities before they say “yes”. And they need the council to get on with transferring these assets. So far, only one has been completed in more than a year. With 117 expressions of interest already in hand, the council will have to drastically raise its game to process such large numbers of transfers before new charges will come in. Welsh Conservative councillors have asked that anyone who has already expressed an interest should not be charged the new fees so they are not penalised for the council’s own delays. PEOPLE IN BRIDGEND WASTE UP TO £5.4M ON CHRISTMAS PRESENTS   It’s the season of goodwill and giving – new research shows people in Wales spend an average of £47 on Christmas presents they suspect their loved ones won’t like. Further analysis by Macmillan Cancer Support suggests in Bridgend, that means £5.4m will be spent this Christmas on unappreciated gifts. The extent of this wastage became clear when British adults were asked to estimate how much they spent on Christmas gifts people might not like. For some, the problem is even worse – nearly a fifth of people in Wales (19%) reckon they spend more than £100 on gifts that may not be appreciated. The poll found many worried they would appear ‘stingy’ if they didn’t spend the cash, with 43% of Brits admitting they were concerned - perhaps because they were wary of judgement by loved ones. Over a quarter (26%) of people in Wales surveyed admitted that they always or often receive Christmas gifts that they will never use, and over half (52%) wish they could agree with their family and friends to spend less on Christmas presents. Almost a quarter (24%) of people in Wales would prefer to have a donation made to their favourite charity than receive a gift at all.

Nicola Newhams, Regional Fundraising Manager, says: “People work very hard for their money, so no one wants to see it going to waste. It’s heart-warming the research shows many people would prefer to have a donation made to charity than receive a gift. Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year for people living with cancer and their loved ones, and every donation Macmillan Cancer Support receives means we can continue to be there to support the three million people currently affected by cancer in the UK, enabling them to live life as fully as they can. “If just 10 people donated £45 – less than the amount every person on average reckons they spend on unappreciated Christmas presents – we could support our frontline staff to run our Macmillan Support Line phone service for an hour. And if you gave one donation of around £30, this could pay for one Macmillan nurse for an hour, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support. If you’re thinking of swapping a traditional gift for a charity gift this year, Macmillan’s virtual gifts are a great way to make a donation in someone’s name.” Every 90 seconds someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. Macmillan relies almost entirely on public donations to funds its vital cancer services. To donate to Macmillan today to help the charity be there for people with cancer this Christmas visit www.macmillan.org.uk/christmas2019. Anyone looking for support with cancer over Christmas can access the Macmillan Online Community 24/7 at macmillan.org.uk, to share their experiences and concerns with other people affected by cancer.

WHERE YOU COME FROM

THIS HEARTH

AT THE END OF THE DAY

I was born here, lived and grown here You are my friends, my family I have known little else but here I have been many people I have worn all your clothes, cried and smiled with you. Our children have the same hopes have played games together and ran together shared the same pain and the same anguish. I have walked the same streets as you sat beneath the same skies felt the same rain, the same sunshine. We both know love and how to love and the pain when love no longer lasts. Why then do you say Go back to where you belong. Malcolm Price, Porthcawl

This hearth Whose heat By wood and metal Set aflame With condensed warmth; Arched and buttressed, Draws in This bed Lying, Not yet laid, Made, Not yet undone; Goose-down cwtched, With softness Tucked tight Draws in This portico Rising Against the outer cold Whose welcome Comes Not just as passing place; The greater hall Or whole of which, Draws in. Jan Kletta, Bridgend

At the end of the day, When you’re tired and torn, Look up to the moon, For it will soon be dawn.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS The New Year’s here, the time has come to make that resolution. I’ll have a think, make some notes, to find the right solution. Give up chocolate? Not a hope. Lose some weight? Maybe. Learn yoga or pilates, could even try tai chi. Write a poem every month to send to Seaside News? No, if I should miss one I’d really have the blues. At last!  I think I’ve got it, the best I’ve ever had. No danger I will break it, so I’ll be good, not bad! I resolve to make no resolutions!!! Judy Dee, Porthcawl

THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY? What a tricky year we’ve had, A year filled with confusion. But did it really happen Or was it an illusion? But there’s no need to worry Or look back in derision, Because in Twenty Twenty We’ll all have perfect vision. Bob Davies, North Cornelly

THE MUSIC TEACHER You released unwilling fingers to trip gladly o’er the keys Or lips to coax once raucous sounds with silver seraph’s ease Took lives the each so different to form one harmonious choir Or turned percussion’s noisy beat to strengthen and inspire Thank God for gifted teachers who inspire us all to praise Releasing hidden talents in so many different ways That we each may make our input, finding gifts none knew were there To live a life of joy and praise, of worship and of prayer   It is you who find a descant for those tunes first sung in pain Or sweetest deepest harmonies that bring a glad refrain For those who lack expression you can teach their hearts to sing Believing we are born to make the courts of heaven ring   Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Let the light of the stars, Guide your way, For tomorrow will be, A beautiful day. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

LIFE’S RIPPLES From minor movements, There are ripples on the waters top, A part of nature’s magic, Which is hard to stop. Just like a pebble in a pond, The momentum continues on, Like the heartache felt after a loss, And your loved one has now gone. Life takes us through many ripples, Some we can just ride. But those who cannot cope, Try to put them to one side. If you are feeling down and troubled, Speak to a colleague or friend, To help you through the hard times, So life’s ripples can then end. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

TRUTH IS THERE Truth lies within the lines of sentences It grows as the world moves on It’s hidden in our inner minds Fastened in the past, present and future. Not always confessed, truth is there Hard to find, hidden deep The truth can hurt and hide in the shadows Hard to accept and harder to take. It haunts people for years Laying heavy on shameful shoulders But once told – a wave of relief It spreads like spilt solution Never to be cloaked again. Ellie Bees, South Cornelly

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL In November we dealt with 4 logged incidents and monitored a further 14, taking us to 83 logged incidents to date. During the month we were also subject to an unannounced DFS inspection. This inspection, with no prior warning, is necessary to ensure we meet the stringent requirements to maintain our Declared Facility Status with UK Coastguard. This rigorous inspection is an annual event and deals with a wide range of issues from simulated mayday incidents, to health and safety. We actually had a real-life incident during the inspection and are pleased to report that we passed the inspection and continue to form part of the UK Search and Rescue infrastructure. As well as seeking to assist members of the public in times of need, we endeavour to support local wildlife. Indeed recently we summoned Swan Rescue to deal with an injured wild bird in distress on Porthcawl Pier. A number of seals, dolphins and porpoises can be seen frequently in the waters off Porthcawl and being able to observe them in their natural habitat is one of the pleasures of being a watchkeeper at Porthcawl. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The New Year is the perfect time for building projects. Whether we’re building better health, or building better relationships, there is always a certain excitement that characterises such endeavours. But before we can adequately build for the future, we cannot neglect the need to break down the barriers to progress in the present. Have you ever noticed at building sites how much time is spent on the demolition before the construction of the new building can even begin? When I first began training for the ministry, I thought I had made a serious mistake. Then a wise friend advised me not to give up. He informed me that education requires the breaking down of previous assumptions before any newly informed ideas could be put in place. Have you ever tried to rebuild a relationship without properly addressing the problems? Have you ever tried to begin a new awareness of yourself without reviewing your previous selfperceptions of inadequacy? If you have, you’ve discovered that without sufficient break down, the new building is unstable. Before our building starts, our breaking downs must begin. A Happy New Year to you all. Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage Chapel

Deadline date for the February issue is: Wednesday 15th January THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hi folks, and a happy New Year. At the beginning of the New Year, nearly everyone starts to think about their new year’s resolutions. Things they will look to give up and other things they will promise themselves to do. We look to enrich our lives in some way. Unfortunately however, these promises are often short lived. The bible says that if we seek to receive an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness we will reign in life (Romans 5 v 17). In a nutshell this means to get connected with God, who will transform our lives for the better. This starts when we first get connected (the gift of righteousness) and also continues through our life as we stay connected (an abundance of grace). Jesus said “I have come that they may have life in abundance” (John 10 v 10). This sort of life is eternal life that starts as soon as we connect with God. It’s a life where we can find supernatural peace, supernatural joy and supernatural righteousness. Even in the midst of all life’s struggles we can saw on eagles wings as it where. This is the best resolution ever in my opinion. God bless! Neil Harvey

Tools for Self Reliance hope you had a very good Christmas and we wish you all a very Happy New Year. We will be having a sale of surplus tools and equipment not needed for our kits in Trinity Church on Saturday 25th January and Saturday 8th February from about 10.30 a.m. until we have sold everything. I would like to thank all our volunteers for their time, dedication and hard work also Gaynor and John Hanson for the tea in the afternoon. The photograph shows some of our volunteers with refurbished tools for a carpentry kit. We are very short of large carpentry vices, good saws (not hard point), Record or Stanley planes and claw hammers. Unfortunately due to storage of space we can only accept tools so cannot accept household items. Recently we had a visit from our head office where a video was shown with an actual bicycle repair kit from our group being used in Africa. It was good to see people using one of our kits to earn a living. We will be closed over Christmas but if you have any tools you can ring John on 01656786367. David Cook Workshop Manager

TRINITY CHURCH We hope you all enjoyed the Christmas holiday. At Trinity we will be celebrating Burn’s night at the High Tide with our GAP group. They participate in activities including painting, arts & crafts, games, stories and dancing. A meal is also provided. The last event was a very enjoyable Christmas party. Our Trinity Music group is looking for new members. They rehearse every Tuesday evening at 6pm. Recent events include a Christmas Musical and Carol Service at the Atlantic. We hope to organise more events with our new members. A special service was held to celebrate 150 years for Action For Children during Advent. Trinity also actively supports Tools For Self Reliance and will continue to save stamps for the Leprosy Mission and collect plastic milk bottle tops for the Rotary End Polio Now projects this year. Trinity members wish everybody a very Happy and Healthy New Year. Full details of all our events and services are on our website and Facebook page. Happy New Year to you all. Well that’s another year gone! December and Christmas are just memories now, hopefully all good memories. Father Christmas honoured the Talbot by visiting us after switching on the Christmas lights in Kenfig Hill. He arrived in a fire engine, lights ablazing and air horns sounding, with Mary the Elf to greet him. He had plenty of chocolate selection boxes in his sack, and the children followed him to his grotto, which had magically appeared in the Rees Centre. Whilst the children waited to see and speak to Father Christmas, the adults were able to visit the many market stalls we had, offering hot refreshments, jams and chutneys, Christmas cakes and much more. As usual, we have our Seasonal Theatre visit, and are off to the Millennium Centre to see “The King and I”. Once again a full

Club features TREE FEST

Young people shine at the 9th Christmas Tree Festival Porthcawl Rotary recently held their Annual Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints’ Church. Visitors have come to expect something special at this event and they were not disappointed. 55 Christmas trees were on display representing local organisations in Porthcawl. Recycled items, carefully crafted pieces and knitted items contributed to a display of truly original decorated trees. Porthcawl Rotary also held the Rotary Young Musician Competition. Four talented young people competed for a place at the District Rotary Young Musician Competition to be held in the New Year. All four musicians impressed the audience. Lara Omidvar, playing the flute was declared the winner. The Festival Concert is another regular feature of the Tree Festival. Choirs and musicians from local schools and youth groups performed to a packed and appreciative audience. Perhaps the most poignant part of the concert came at the conclusion when the Church lights were switched off so only the Christmas tree lights were illuminated whilst a soloist sang “Silent Night” to harp accompaniment. President Hugh Moatt, commented that the Tree Festival had been a resounding success. He expressed his gratitude to the Rotarians and everyone who supported the Festival. Robert & Lawrence

JENKIN HENRY TEA 2019

Every year Porthcawl Town Council (PTC) host the Jenkin Henry Tea for 20 residents who were born in Porthcawl. The recipients from a short list aged between 65 and 95 were invited to the Grand Pavilion and were served a cream tea after being entertained by Alan Townsend and Jack Bridger - members of the Porthcawl Ukulele Band. Each was presented with a certificate and gift bag by Mayor Cllr Graham Walter, Cllr A Harris and Deputy town Clerk Sarah Watkins. Jenkin Henry was born in the town in 1833, before emigrating, at an early age, to Australia where he became a successful adjuster and owner of weighbridges. He never forgot his home town and on his death in 1919 he made a bequest of £200 to the then Porthcawl UDC with instructions that the interest was distributed at Christmas. PDC continued with the instructions of the bequest ever since providing the tea each year. PDC have asked that if you think you or some one you know may be eligible to be a recipient please contact the Town Clerk. David Swidenbank

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I am looking to split from my wife of 20 years in the New Year. We have grown apart and have nothing in common these days. I want the split and to file for Divorce. She doesn’t and is happy to plod on. We have two children both in secondary school and assets to sort out. I really don’t know where to turn next and whether I should seek legal advice as relations are amicable at the moment. Answer:I strongly recommend that you book an initial consultation with a solicitor especially as you have children and assets to divide. A consultation of at least one hour is necessary to take down your details, advise and devise an action plan. Your solicitor should recommend Mediation as a way of resolving any issues regarding the children or finances as this is a very cost effective way of dealing with these matters on separation and Divorce. Your solicitor will be able to advise you on a local mediator and advise you alongside the process. The aim is to keep your costs at a manageable level and hopefully reach an agreement with your wife and avoid Court proceedings which will be very costly and potentially uncertain. You will also wish to maintain a civil relationship with your wife as you are inextricably linked through your children for many years to come and there is nothing worse than divorcing and ending up on non speaking terms which will cause you all especially your children considerable distress. As a firm, we offer an initial consultation fee of £200 to include VAT for the initial appointment and fixed fee prices should you decide to file for Divorce in the New Year. This will be based on one of five ‘facts’. The five facts of divorce are: 1. Adultery: Your spouse has committed adultery and you find it intolerable to continue living with him or her. 2. Unreasonable behaviour: there can include domestic abuse, infidelity or persistent unpleasantness. 3. Desertion: Your spouse deserted you against your will, and you have been living apart for at least two years. 4. Two years’ separation: You have been separated for at least two years, and you both agree to the divorce. 5. Five years’ separation: You have been separated for at least five years. You must also have been married for at least a year to divorce. Similar rules apply for ending a registered civil partnership. Where possible, you should agree between yourselves who will petition for the divorce and what the grounds for divorce will be. Finances will need to be agreed as a result of the marriage breakdown. Interim agreements can be made subject to a final agreement. The first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children. The parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support, known as child maintenance. The other key factors into account include: • Each spouse’s income • Any pension entitlements • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions to each other. Once you have reached an agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair to both parties. It also limits the ability of either spouse to make a claim against future income, capital and acquired assets. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order. Natalie Thomas DJM Solicitors 01656 772211 www.djm.law.co.uk

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SEPARATION For family lawyers, the New Year is a busy time with more people seeking advice on issues arising from the breakdown of their relationship. It may be that a couple has decided to remain together for one last Christmas for the sake of the children, only to find that the plan hasn’t worked out. Or it may be an individual who, having separated from their partner some time previously, wants to deal with matters in the New Year, as part of a resolution to get their house in order. There is never an ideal time to broach the subject of separating from your partner, but if you have called an end to your relationship, there are a number of things that you can do in preparation for your first appointment with a solicitor. Firstly, gather together your bank statements and credit card bills, obtain an up to date mortgage redemption statement and ask an estate agent to assess the value of your house. On a practical note, you should obtain details of your eligibility for tax credits and child benefit. The Child Maintenance Service has a helpful online assessment tool to help you work out how much you will receive or pay for your children. This information will give you an idea of the income you are likely to have from all sources and then you can work out your budget going forward. Then you could consider whether you want to attempt mediation in trying to work out arrangements for the children or to settle finances. Mediation is a sensible way to try and resolve these issues without resorting to the court. The above will stand you in better stead when you first see your lawyer and will enable your lawyer to progress quicker with your case. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

NEWTON WI It was good to see so many members on a very cold and windy evening at the December Meeting. There was quite a lot of GFWI business to discuss, but once dealt with it was time to celebrate Christmas with our ‘Carol Service’. This year we were privileged to have our own Pat Richards to conduct the service, with readings, poems and carols, the theme of the service was ‘love’. It was a lovely evening, concluding with tea and mince pies. Many thanks to Pat and Judith Shaw our pianist. Some members attended the GFWI Carol Service at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea which they thoroughly enjoyed. The Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church was spectacular again this year. We once again thank the Craft Ladies for all their hard work in the preparation of our tree. We wish all members a very happy Christmas. M Freeman

Deadline date for the February issue is: Wednesday 15th January LALESTON WI 24 members attended our December carol service at St. Davids Church, Laleston on 6th December where the service was conducted by the Reverend Anthony Beer. Three of our members read readings after which we returned to The Blandy Hall for a buffet supper supplied by all members. There was a very good raffle with all raffle prizes supplied by committee members. Members were given a seasonable recyclable gift bag with chocolates instead of crackers to be eco-friendly.  We are having our Annual Lunch on February 18th at St Mary Hill Golf Club.  Members were given copies of next years programme.  Our next meeting would be a Beetle Drive on January 2nd.  Our W.I. meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7.15pm  at The Blandy Hall, Laleston.  More information from Diane Marshall 01656 656600

Business & finance WHAT A NEW YEAR GIFT FOR EMILY

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS & YOUR MONEY

Welcome to the New Year, with the General Election before Christmas having hopefully settled matters of importance. Let’s hope 2020 is a great year for us all. To start the year I’m relating the story of a young lady and her Grandma, Mrs W, who came to see me at the end of November. Emily had just landed her first teaching job, having been doing supply teacher work since graduating last summer. The problem was, Emily’s job was going to take her away from her home area but the opportunity was not one to be missed. Whilst moving away held no fear for Emily since she’d been away at University anyway for the last four years, the one thing that did cause her issues was the prospect of trying to find suitable accommodation in the new area, with rents there being very substantial and that would eat a large hole in Emily’s take home salary each month. It was a day like this that Grandma had anticipated might well come around at some time or other and it was time to take a hard look and come to realistic view. Rental of a property in an expensive area was an unattractive option and Grandma knew that wasn’t really an efficient way of doing things and she had looked forward to the day when she might be able to help. Emily was one of two Grandchildren and when Grandma passed, she and her sibling would benefit from Grandma’s Will, with a sum of money left to them both. However, Grandma’s view was always that if she could help the Grandchildren whilst she was still alive she would do so. She reckoned that whilst she had only modest savings to see out her own final few years, Mrs W resolved that she would help now and since Emily would be getting a share of the sale of Gran’s house eventually, then why shouldn’t she have it now. So, the phone rang and the appointment was made. I was able to visit Mrs W and help her to raise enough of a modest but sufficient deposit from her own home via a suitable Later Life scheme to release some equity which she could then gift to Emily to put down on a place of her own, a starter home which would be just right and with the help of a lender that specialises in helping new young teachers, the issue was resolved and a first mortgage for Emily set up. Helping young people get on the housing ladder is something we’d all like to be able to do and many of us have. If you would like to find out how we could you and your young Family members, give me a call – 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 – you could be making someone’s year, just like Emily’s Gran.

For all those investors who didn’t carry out a review of their financial affairs last year here’s the solution, go see an Independent Financial Advisor. Most company’s give some free advice Abacus Assurance give an hour’s free consultation. Many clients I’ve met over the years that DIY their investments have come a cropper at some point because it’s such a complex and crowded market place. Even the most intelligent admit to giving up eventually when they see all the correspondence pouring through their letter box. Most times doing nothing is easier than making a decision and this is where inertia ruins wealth just as procrastination is the thief of time. This is where an IFA can help you through the maze of investment products and funds and help you make the decisions you might not be qualified to make and at the same time be protected by the regulators. Typically I often get asked ‘What’s a good Stocks and Shares ISA this year?’ or ‘Who’s the best pension provider now?’ or ‘What’s the best investment to avoid tax?’ There isn’t a right answer to any of these question as everyone’s needs differ. An investment that would suit one client could be totally wrong for another. Here’s a good one - ‘I’ve got all these shares my dad left me and they pay dividends and I don’t know what to do with them, do I sell them will I pay tax’? An IFA can answer these questions and much more, like transferring the shares into an ISA and not paying tax on income or capital gains, but do you know how to do it? Some clients don’t want to use a financial advisor because after the free consultation there will be a fee to look after the investments on an on-going basis to ensure that everything remains on track as these things don’t manage themselves. We recently had a client who had invested all their eggs in one basket and wouldn’t diversify on our advice, the investment is now showing a loss of over £10,000. Don’t underestimate the value of your IFA! Philip Vaughan is a Director at Abacus Assurance Financial Services, Porthcawl 01656 772222 PHILIP VAUGHAN Abacus Assurance 01656 772222

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS The New Year begins with club members looking forward to an interesting program of monthly talks. This year we are having a session where members can ask a panel of experts gardening questions. It is a very muchanticipated event as we all have the same sort of challenges such as what is going wrong with some plants. Club members are also looking forward to the delivery of the fresh compost to our club shop next month. As soon as it arrives members will be buying it and taking the compost home into greenhouses where the bags can warm up a bit before seed sowing and plant growing can begin again. As this month is cold, dark and gloomy there is little else to do other than browse the numerous seed and plant catalogues that pop through the letterbox and look forward to having a glorious display later in the year. There are however some essential jobs such as ensuring that those plants, which are vulnerable to the weather, are well protected and, should we get heavy snowfall, any accumulations are brushed off shrubs to prevent the branches being broken from the weight of the snow. New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk. Or email EnqLGC@gmail.com Joyce Pegg

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY We are a friendly group of about 35 members who meet on alternate Wednesday evenings at Awel Y Mor Community Centre from 7pm. We have regular social events and club outings as well as tuition in flower arranging and monthly displays by trained demonstrators. We took part in the Community Christmas Tree Festival at Margam Park in November and also the Rotary Christmas Tree Festival at all Saint’s Church in December. A beautiful floral tree was designed by our Chairman and tutor. During December we had a Practice night making a topiary tree and also had our Christmas dinner at the Atlantic. Key diary dates for the New Year include: - Afternoon Tea at the Grove with a demonstration of Art by Sue McDonagh on February 5th; - Practice night on 22nd January arranging flowers for a church; - Practice night on 19th February with the theme of Winter Cheer. We wish all readers a very Happy New Year and would be delighted to welcome visitors and new members this year. No previous experience of flower arranging is necessary. Further information and details are available on our Facebook page or telephone 07581 048448. Alison Thomas, Club Secretary

Deadline date for the February issue is: Wednesday 15th January

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB January is the beginning of the gardening year, fresh starts, renewed energy and glorious plans for the year ahead! It is also the coldest month of the year but the freezing cold won’t kill off all the weeds. Oh no, might get your flowers, but not common chickweed and groundsel – they will still thrive, so look out for them and get hoeing before they take over. Remove yellowing leaves from brassicas, they are no use to the plant and harbour pests and diseases, not nice for a cabbage! Sow sweet peas now, under cover, sown now they will give you earlier flowers in greater numbers and a longer season –perfect! Remember they have a long root run so deep pots are best, cover with paper to keep warmth in and light out, they will germinate in about ten days, watch out for mice though – they love them! Talking of mice- did you know if you are using humane trap bait it with mouth-watering peanut butter it’s a mouse’s favourite thing (even better than sweet peas). Mice are cute though. Just to cheer you up, from January 1st there are only 79 days till the first day of spring! Chris Early

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY This year has been like the Curate’s egg, good in parts. We’ve had all the right weather but not necessarily in the right order. We’ve had too much sun then cool spells, too much rain then long, dry spells. This Autumn has been particularly wet. Minimise walking over sodden vegetable beds as this will damage the soil structure. Walkboards will also keep your boots cleaner. Fruit bushes should be pruned now while they are dormant. Cut out dead, diseased and tangled wood to leave an open plant. Summer fruiting raspberries and blackberries have their fruited canes cut back to ground level, new canes being tied in for next year’s fruit. Autumn fruiting raspberries are cut down completely as they fruit on the current year’s canes. Mulch with good quality compost, leaf mould or bagged manure with a good handful of blood, fish and bone fertiliser. If not already done clean out the greenhouse and sterilise with Jeyes Fluid or a fumigating candle. Seed trays, pots and plant containers and bamboo bean sticks also need the same treatment. When you have a spare moment relax with the new seed catalogues and plan next year’s planting. A Happy New Year! Frank Fulgoni

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER Happy New Year everyone. We hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas. We’ve had an amazing year. Each event is getting bigger which is what we want to achieve and we’re introducing new events/challenges. Challenges like “Step up for January”. All you have to do is walk 12,000 steps a day throughout January. At the end of it you would have walked the equivalent to walking from Swansea to London. It’s £25 to sign up and you get a neck buff to keep your neck warm and a water bottle to keep you hydrated. Finances are especially tough in January but even tougher if you’re going through treatment for Cancer. So please do sign up for this brand new challenge. Other exciting news is that this year we were approached by the charity Clic Sergant. They help children/adults from 16-24. They are now referring these families to us which means we are helping more and more people. We’ve got huge plans for 2020 and these plans are extremely exciting for us. We are looking for more volunteers for the events we put on as we cannot put events on without the help of volunteers. They are key to any event. If you would like to help out please do get in touch. All it leaves me to say is. Have a happy healthy 2020. Nicky, Emma and Cath. Cost of Cancer Trustees

THE OVER-LOOKED MINERAL Magnesium is involved in more than 600 different biochemical reactions in your body, and deficiency can contribute to significant health problems. Two common pathologies associated with magnesium deficiency are Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Low magnesium levels have been linked to insulin resistance, a precursor to Type 2 diabetes, as it impairs your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, which is important for the prevention of Type 2 diabetes Recent research links low magnesium levels with diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. Magnesium has been shown to improve Type 2 diabetes. Diabetics who took 250 milligrams of magnesium per day for three months improved their insulin sensitivity by 10% and reduced blood sugar by 37% The best way to ascertain your magnesium status is to do an RBC magnesium test, which measures the amount of magnesium in your red blood cells, along with tracking any signs and symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Low magnesium has been linked to a higher risk for high blood pressure, stroke and sudden cardiac death. According to the Open Heart study authors, “most people need an additional 300 mg of magnesium per day in order to lower their risk of developing numerous chronic diseases,” and this includes heart disease and diabetes. THE FIVE PRECEPTS IN BUDDHISM (…Continued from last month) Sīlaalso involves wisdom. Its ethical sensitivity asks us to consider more carefully what is harmful, and to exercise discrimination. We can then notice the energies and impulses that we leave outside the boundaries that we set — things we might acknowledge about our nature but don’t build our life upon. Particularly as one looks into the mind more fully, and meets the floods, all kinds of inclinations that are un-virtuous and ‘sub-personal’ come to light: murderous instincts, jealousy and spite. Some pretty dark stuff can be thrashing around in there.  If one doesn’t have confidence and faith in one’s temple of awareness, one can get very confused and depressed about it all. This is where the idea of establishing goodheartedness and generosity as a foundation pays off, so that the mind’s foundation can be built on intentions like these that one has carried into action.  Then one can acknowledge the negative forces and energies that move into the mind; and, through not encouraging or building on them, one can withdraw emotional energy, this withdrawal isn’t a denial, but a lessening of the drama. It is happening but you are simply not taking an interest in it. You’re not obsessed with it. Just that withdrawal of emotional excitement and highlighting calms the energies of the mind and makes them subject to being shifted into more useful channels. Neville Evans

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

The choir recently sang at the Remembrance Sunday service at All Saints Church. This year we performed Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is my shepherd’, an arrangement better known as the theme from ‘Vicar of Dibley’. A wreath was laid on behalf of the choir by Haydn Wheeler, long serving choir member who also served in Cyprus with the Royal Engineers. This event holds dear to the choir, especially the many ex-servicemen in our ranks. The choir is currently practising hard for the upcoming festive celebrations including, Carol Services at the Masonic Home, the Stroke Club Carol Concert, the RNLI Carol Service, our charity evening at the Globe and our Arlington Church Carol Service. In addition to our regular concerts, this year we’re performing carols at the new Porthcawl Health Centre. A place many of us know only too well! The choir is looking forward to next year, when we celebrate our 40th Anniversary. We are in the healthy position of having attracted a number of new members this year and the choir is at its strongest for a long time A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our loyal supporters and readers of Seaside News. Ian Williams

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Hope you all had a fab Xmas. I must take my hat off to the powers that be in Porthcawl who put on the Jingle Bells parade and Christmas Lights event! I’ve been a big critic over the years as it’s been so poor, but well done to everyone for a fantastic day! Back to music, and it’s going to be a huge year for Bridgend’s Those Damn Crows. They release their second album, “Point Of No Return”, on 7th February and I’ve had a sneak preview and their fans won’t be disappointed. The Crows, who 52 | seaside news

are Shane Greenhall on vocals, guitarists Dave Winchurch and Ian “Shiner” Thomas, bassist Lloyd Wood and drummer Ronnie Huxford, had to upgrade their last tour to bigger venues because of high ticket demand, and they play Cardiff’s Tramshed on 25th April. They are a great set of guys too, so I promise to catch them live soon. Sadly, “Gene Loves Jezebel’s” British tour in March has been cancelled. Michael Aston, who, like me, hails from Cornelly, but moved to the U.S.A. in the 80s where the band hit the big time, is hoping to tour here later in the year. Keep your news coming. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

In this column last month I gave readers a brief insight into preparations for the making of the Llandow Air Disaster documentary film, and this month I am revealing the model, which will be used to represent the Avro Tudor 5 aircraft that crashed at Sigingstone in 1950 with the loss of 80, lives. With relatively little archive footage available of G-AKBY – the doomed aircraft – and bearing in mind the high cost of obtaining the few shots that exist, there is no option but to resort to building a 1/16th scale model and this is the stage it has reached. In case anyone is wondering, there are no plans available that I am aware of – I am using what few schematic drawings there are on the internet, aided by photographs. Clearly there is plenty more to do, such as making the wings, fitting four small electric motors and four-bladed propellers together with undercarriage, and covering the entire model in thin aluminium, and it needs to be ready for special effects photography next spring. This story has already stirred recollections with quite a few Seaside News readers. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir with partly-finished model of Avro Tudor 5

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Club Competition Two, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Members could enter two images into each section. Rob Mitchell judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was William Baker with ‘Apache’. The winner of the Digital Trophy was Glyn Edmunds with ‘Portrait of a Young Lion’. Congratulations to both William and Glyn for winning the competitions. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal. So if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR. Sport reports PORTHCAWL RUNNERS

Blwyddyn newydd dda (Happy New Year) from all at Porthcawl Runners. Following up from December’s article, there was medal success for three of our members representing South Wales at the Regional Cross Country in Brecon, with Rob Bennett, Debs Roberts and Hannah Jenkins picking up medals and Hannah going on to represent Wales at the British Championships in Liverpool. Our club was formed in 2010 at a house warming party for Sharon and Paul Ford. Charles Jones, who had recently retired, applied his passion for running and vast experience to get the club up and running quickly, and we immediately affiliated with the Rugby Club - proud to wear their colours. In recent years the boom of Parkrun, several cohorts of Couch to 5k, and the selfless dedication of our Committee and Coaches has swollen our numbers; and there is a camaraderie that lifts all of us to be better versions of ourselves. We plan to celebrate our 10-year anniversary with this same passion and we are excited at the prospect of the New Year and new challenges. For those looking to join the fun, from those new to running, to experienced runners, we have something for all adults at 6.30pm Monday and Wednesday from the Rugby Club. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl Runners

Deadline date for the February issue is: Wednesday 15th January

PEN Y BONT SLSC’S CELEBRATIONS With the summer season of competing and patrolling fully drawn to a close, it’s time to celebrate the achievements of all our competitors and club members. The celebrations started with the SLSA Wales 50th anniversary presentation evening. Pen y Bont SLSC had much to be proud of that evening, as we were presented with: the Stillwaters Sword, the Wilkinson Sword and the Super Club of the Year trophy! These are three huge achievements, which the efforts of each and every Pen y Bont competitor helped to secure. Welsh team caps were also presented that evening to eight Pen y Bont members to recognise their individual achievements this summer in the Wales vs England competition.  Pen y Bont SLSC also had its annual presentation evening this month, which celebrated the aforementioned achievements. The evening was great fun and was made even better by having so much to be proud of.  With the Christmas season now approaching, the nippers are having a Christmas party to celebrate all their impressive achievements this summer too.  The SLSA Wales Stillwater championships are quickly approaching with the new year, so training and preparation has started in anticipation of gaining as much, if not more, success in 2020. PYLE & KENFIG GOLF CLUB TEAM UP WITH BRIDGEND STROKE ASSOCIATION Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club and Wales Golf have linked up with the Stroke Association to encourage those in our local community who have survived a stroke to try golf or get back into the game they love. Pyle & Kenfig is one of only ten facilities across Wales that have rolled out the scheme this season, all offering free or low cost beginner group lessons, specifically tailored to stroke survivors. Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, led by disability inclusive trained PGA Director of Golf Dylan Williams and fellow PGA Professional Matt Wootton have worked closely with Bridgend Stroke Association. One member of the group Bev Yardley said “I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to give golf a try. I wasn’t sure I would be able to after my stroke, so when the possibility was there, I had to give it a go, the inclusive trained professionals at the club’s floodlight driving range which is open to the public.” “The facilities at Pyle & Kenfig Golf club are great for people with disabilities, so there was no concern about getting about.” The Course is fantastic and open every day of the year!!! We are starting a new Stroke Group in the Spring of 2020, so if you or somebody you know has suffered from a stroke and would like to give golf a go, please contact us at Pyle & Kenfig on 01656 783093 Ext 2 or visit our website: www.pandkgolfclub.co.uk
