LETTERS 1000 MILES FOR CHARLOTTE Dear Editor, A group of Mums from Porthcawl completed a 1000-mile fitness challenge in February to raise funds for 4Louis, a charity that provides bereaved families with memory boxes. The fundraiser was in memory of Charlotte Jane Penelope Hill, precious daughter of Tamzine John and Christopher Hill, who was born full term but forever sleeping at the Princess of Wales Hospital on 29th December 2020. Local Personal Trainer Vicky Evans-Barnfield started up a new Dad & Mum fitness class called ‘DAM Fit’ in Porthcawl last summer, which brought this group of Mums together. Vicky’s enthusiasm for post-natal fitness has taken the class from strength to strength amidst the pandemic and its members have evolved into a dedicated group of mums supporting each other through fitness. When these Porthcawl Mummies heard this devastating news they were determined to do something special in Charlotte’s memory to show their support for her family. Despite family and work commitments, Covid restrictions and some awful weather, they covered 1420 miles and raised over £2000 for Charlotte. You can read the full story or donate at https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/1000miles4charlotte DAMfit sessions take place at 10:15am on Mondays. For more information, email Vicky on Vickyevs1982@yahoo.com

Have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk material and the construction. The excavated inner harbour would provide a first class opportunity for a waterside development in South Wales, usurping both Cardiff Bay and Swansea Marina. Porthcawl town centre would also benefit from a greatly increased footfall from those using the leisure and catering aspects associated with such a development. Any objections on noise and environmental grounds could be managed in the same way as required from the current development proposals. BCBC has a unique opportunity provide the citizens of its borough with a legacy that would put this available shoreline amongst the best in the UK. BCBC also has as one of its LDP objectives: ‘’To realise the potential of Porthcawl as a premier seaside and tourist destination which capitalises on the regeneration of its waterfront.” Give the visitors to Porthcawl a chance to enjoy a modernised, enhanced and UK leading shoreline development, and for those that live in the town improved well-being and pride David Jones, Porthcawl

DOG FOWLING IN PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, Dog fowling is a particular problem in Porthcawl with local residents having to suffer the consequences of inconsiderate dog owners, you can’t blame the dogs but you can fine the dog owners. Why is it BCBC are not concerned about the problem, why won’t they put in place byelaws to address the disgusting habit. Porthcawl after all is the jewel in the crown of the borough. Could you please highlight this problem? Clive Martin, Porthcawl

LOCKDOWN TRAINING

PORTHCAWL REGENERATION Dear Editor, Salt Lake car park has a hidden gem, the old Porthcawl inner harbour. This provided seven and a half acres of water much enjoyed by both visitors and residents. It was backfilled during WW2 for use by troops. What an opportunity this is for the regeneration of Porthcawl. Backfilled is the key word here. A Welsh Government report in the ‘’noughties’’ on harbour/marina facilities required around Wales found that the walls of the inner harbour were still intact. Excavating this material would provide good suitable material that could provide a building platform to be formed elsewhere where low lying land is currently unsuitable. There are a few such areas in the town such as land to the east of zig zag lanes’ junction with Newton Nottage Road. This could provide a larger area of land for new housing with existing excellent road network links, both for moving the 8 | seaside news

Dear Editor, This is a photograph of my son Harrison Hier who plays for Porthcawl RFC under 13s doing sprint training during lock down on a very windy and cold day at Porthcawl. We have been so lucky to live in Porthcawl during these unprecedented times and have such beautiful training venues on our doorstep including the Sand Dunes not to mention the Big Dipper !! These outdoor spaces  have been quintessential to my son’s well being the last year and we always enjoy the pictures that people send in to the Seaside News. Let’s hope the beaches are packed again soon. But for the moment at least we are enjoying having them all to ourselves!  Richie Hier, Porthcawl

THE BOY WHO DREW AUSCHWITZ By Thomas Geve

Thomas Geve was just 15 years old when he was liberated from Buchenwald concentration camp on 11 April 1945. It was the third concentration camp he had survived. Upon arrival at AuschwitzBirkenau, Thomas was separated from his mother and left to fend for himself in the men’s camp of Auschwitz I, at the age of 13. During the 22 months he was imprisoned, he was subjected to, and forced to observe first-hand, the inhumane world of Nazi concentration camps. On his eventual release Thomas felt compelled to capture daily life in the death camps in more than eighty profoundly moving drawings. Infamous scenarios synonymous with this dark period of history were portrayed in poignant but simplistic detail with extraordinary accuracy. The Boy Who Drew Auschwitz presents a rare living testimony through the eyes of a child who had the unique ability to observe and remember every detail around him and chose to document it all. COST OF CANCER

BANANAS AND SLEEP QUALITY

The Step Up For January challenge raised £375. Thank you to those who took part and for those of you who helped me with my steps. Some days it was most definitely a challenge. We still don’t know whether or not we’ll be putting our annual charity ball on in May, so please do watch this space. We need some fresh ideas for fundraising so if anyone’s got some ideas please do share. Don’t forget why we do all of this fundraising. We do it to help those who are going through treatment for Cancer. We help with things like gas, electric, council tax etc. All the bills that do still need to be paid. Anyone who gets in touch will be treated with the upmost privacy. We don’t sell anyone’s details onto anyone else because we don’t believe in it. Your details are just that your details. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. As restrictions are now easing please do take care of yourselves, be conscious of others and let’s keep us out of another lockdown. I just thought I would leave you with a quote I’ve recently seen which can be for anyone going through any difficult situation not just cancer and it’s this…….. “Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

Bananas are rich in sleep-promoting nutrients like magnesium, tryptophan, vitamin B6, carbs, and potassium, all of which have been linked to improved sleep. Besides providing sleeppromoting nutrients, bananas may help improve your sleep by easing digestion and promoting feelings of fullness. In addition to eating bananas before bed, optimizing your sleep hygiene may help you sleep better. That includes winding down techniques, optimizing your sleep environment, and sticking to a bedtime routine. Several supplements, including lavender and magnesium, can help with relaxation and sleep quality when combined with other strategies. MIND In the contest between logic and emotion, there are is one clear winner. How often do we know what the better option is and yet find ourselves following old habits instead. Knowing that it is healthier to avoid junk food, quit smoking or not question our confidence and abilities does not mean that we automatically follow these paths. Lasting change is easier with an understanding of what the behaviour is built on, this goes beyond the rational explanation to determining the underlying emotional connections. Examining that is very powerful, giving us the opportunity to question beliefs and links that have been laid down over many years, many installed when we were growing up and without ever being revisited despite all our subsequent experiences. The attachments to those feelings have made them the default, governing our behaviour even when we know there is a better way. We find security in the familiar, our mind seeking out what is known but there is a way to make deep, long-lasting changes in your life. Hypnotherapy helps re-programme your subconscious mind to release those emotions no longer serving you and move forward with what you want to achieve. Find out more at www.youraffinity.co.uk

WHY WORRY? What do you like to worry about? You may think ‘I don’t enjoy worrying! ‘ Now ask yourself how often do you worry? Once a day, never, every night before you go to sleep, you know the answer. Now you have noticed how regularly you are worrying you may want to consider why. Do you prefer to feel anxious or troubled about actual or potential problems. Or would you prefer happiness and peace? There are two types of worry. One you can control and one you cannot. So can you do anything about your worry? If yes, take action and the worry goes away, if not, seek help from a source that can. Why would you chose to think troubling thoughts when you could be experiencing calm in the present moment. BATTLE CONTINUES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

NEWS FROM THE MAYOR OF PORTHCAWL

With the end of Covid restrictions in sight we look forward to things getting back to normal. For many small local businesses, however, things may not be as they were for many months to come, if ever. The pandemic has presented an enormous economic challenge, resulting in the collapse of many small businesses and independent traders. For those that have survived, the future looks bleak and without further support from the government they will struggle to continue. I have been contacted by local businesses who have been refused funding support and when I questioned Mark Drakeford about this, he responded that, “...it simply isn’t possible with the funding we have to fill every single gap that exists...” This is simply not good enough and I will continue to challenge Welsh government on sufficient funding for businesses. I want local businesses not only to survive the pandemic but to thrive after it. Our constituency office is always available for advice on funding or benefits available for small local businesses.

I hope you are staying safe and well. There is some optimism that things may be improving. I urge everyone to make sure they get their vaccination when offered. News this month is about how we as a town can commemorate one of the worst seafaring disasters in our history that of the Liberty Ship SS Samtampa. Just think back to that time in 1947 when the SS Samtampa with 39 young men on board lost steerage and drifted towards Sker rocks in extremely rough seas. The Mumbles lifeboat Edward Prince of Wales was launched and made its way through treacherous seas to save the crew of the SS Samtampa. Tragically the lives of the crew of the SS Samtampa & Edward Prince of Wales lifeboat were all lost. Gary Victor and his colleagues on Porthcawl Shout have been committed to providing a permanent memorial to those that lost their lives that day. I am delighted to say that Cllr. Norah Clarke supported by Porthcawl Town Council has teamed up with Gary and his colleagues to make this happen. A fabulous memorial has been produced as a granite sculpture and, in very positive discussions with Bridgend County Borough Council officers, site options have been identified. Porthcawl Town Council is fully behind this project as we feel that this is a very important part of our Towns history, to pay tribute to those who gave their lives and also to appreciate our very own Porthcawl lifeboat crew.

WRONG LOCATIONS FOR NEW OFFENDER CENTRE As I write this, Bridgend County Borough Council is due to meet with UK Government to find out more about its plans for establishing an all-new Wales Residential Women’s Centre. Unbelievably, the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl and Sunnyside House in Bridgend town are among potential locations under consideration. While I support the rationale for establishing a centre within South Wales, Bridgend County Borough is absolutely the wrong place for it to be located, and the council will fight these proposals every step of the way. We are already home to South Wales’ largest prison, the only youth offending institute in Wales and the only medium security facility for people with complex mental health needs in Wales, yet do not receive adequate levels of resource necessary for providing additional services related to these facilities. This is nothing to do with nimbyism – we clearly already have much more than our fair share of regional and national sites for people with complex needs, and the proposed locations are entirely inappropriate. Following the loss of Bridgend Ford Engine Plant, what we need from UK Government is a multi-million pound investment into our communities, not these half-baked plans, and I call for them to be scrapped immediately. COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

COUNCILLOR BRIAN JONES Mayor of Porthcawl

PROPOSED RESIDENTIAL WOMEN’S CENTRE I know that many of my constituents were surprised to learn that the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl and Sunnyside House in Bridgend are among a number of sites across South Wales being considered by the Ministry of Justice as possible locations for its proposed residential women’s centre. I am amazed that the UK Government is looking at these sites. One is in the middle of a prime tourist area and the other next to a new housing development and surgery. Bridgend Council has objected to these plans and has set out their reasons for doing so very clearly. I have also made my own representations to the UK Government objecting to these plans. This looks like a proposal made in London without consultation. The county borough has already embraced more than its fair share of regional and national sites for people with complex needs.  I do not disagree with the principle and I absolutely agree with my Labour colleague Sarah Murphy who has said if an all-Wales pilot scheme for women offenders is to be a success, it needs to be done properly and in the right place, not just for surrounding communities and businesses, but also for the women themselves. FURTHER INVESTMENT INTO COSY CORNER

NEW OPERATOR CONFIRMED FOR THE PORTHCAWL ROAD TRAIN

Plans to establish new community facilities at Cosy Corner have seen the council commit an additional investment of £385,000 in order to match £1m that is already being provided by Welsh Government. The money has been pledged to enable the delivery of new facilities, which will benefit residents, visitors and tourists alike. We have developed a range of proposals for how the site could be used that are both ambitious and realistic. These include establishing a high-quality children’s play area to complement nearby attractions, creating a new outdoor performance space with seating and landscaping, providing facilities for use by community organisations such as the Sea Cadets, building new premises suitable for small retail and startup enterprises, and establishing storage and changing facilities for users of the nearby marina. As well as being an iconic seafront location, we want Cosy Corner to remain an important part of the public realm within Porthcawl while supporting our regeneration plans for the Salt Lake and Esplanade areas. We also want it to complement completed regeneration projects such as the new marina, new sea defences, newly-restored Jennings Building and more. You can expect to see an opportunity for people to comment upon the plans very soon.

I’m delighted to see that the social enterprise, Emmaus South Wales, has been chosen as the operator for Porthcawl’s new road train attraction, and that the service could be up and running this summer as long as pandemic conditions allow. The seasonal service will operate between Sandy Bay and Rest Bay to connect the town centre with the seafront, taking in key stops such as Coney Pleasure Beach, Porthcawl Marina, the town centre, the Grand Pavilion and the Rest Bay Watersports Centre. The train will have three carriages, one of which will be wheelchair accessible, and Emmaus will establish a ticket office and waiting area at its store on New Road, Porthcawl, which is near the start of the road train’s route. The new road train is being introduced using £11,453 secured from Welsh Government as part of the Visit Wales Tourist Attractor Destinations scheme, and Emmaus will take on the responsibility of the scheme’s subsequent operational costs. As we look towards a cautious return to ‘normal’ life with shops, hotels and other businesses starting to reopen, the road train is sure to become an important part of Porthcawl’s overall recovery, and I am looking forward to seeing it in action.

COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

SOUTH CORNELLY PLAN WILL CREATE NUISANCE I am alarmed by plans to locate a stone crushing plant on land near people’s homes in South Cornelly. Residents are being asked for their views on plans to create this operation in the heart of the village. It would process 4,000 tonnes of stone every day for use as aggregate. While recycling old building materials is welcome, this is not the right site for it. I well remember the fight put up by local residents against plans some years ago to locate a wood recycling plant on this same land. That scheme failed and I believe that this one should as well. It will create large amounts of dust, a high level of noise over a 12 hour working day and result in 22 extra lorries an hour visiting the site. Objections to it will focus on air pollution from the dust and from the generator, which will burn up to 1 million litres of diesel every year. The extra lorries on the roads surrounding the village will also be a crucial argument against it. I backed residents opposed to the wood recycling scheme and I will back residents now in their opposition to this plan. SUZY DAVIES MS Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

CENTRE PLAN IS NOT ACCEPTABLE I am fighting plans to locate a Residential Centre for female offenders in the locality. The Ministry of Justice has shortlisted two sites locally – The Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl and the Wellness Village being built at Sunnyside in Bridgend. Neither of these sites is suitable. Porthcawl is a seaside resort and the loss of one of its leading hotels will be a blow to the tourism sector there. Although The Atlantic Hotel is up for sale, local residents have been hoping that any new owners would retain it as a hotel because Porthcawl needs to offer holidaymakers a wide choice of accommodation. It also has poor public transport so residents in the centre would not be able to keep in touch with families easily. The site is Bridgend is surrounded by residential streets and includes a health centre, which will draw in hundreds of people every day. Bridgend already has a prison, a young offenders’ institution, a drug rehabilitation centre and secure mental health accommodation. Locating an extra semi-custodial facility with its potential attendant problems relating to drugs and alcohol abuse in the area is not on. I have conveyed my strong objections to Ministers and will be holding further meetings with them. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

NEWTON PRIMARY - WELCOME BACK!

Many congratulations to all pupils who have taken part in our Virtual Eisteddfod. Every Department set tasks to be completed by KS3 pupils for off-stage competitions, and we had a terrific response, with some amazing work produced. Highlights included Sam Richards’ Welsh inspired bake, Saoirse Moulton’s artwork explaining use of pattern and colour and Matty Timms’ monument to commemorate a key aspect of Welsh history. The Music, Drama, Welsh and English Departments also set onstage tasks for both KS3 and KS4 pupils. This year, pupils have chosen and organised their own music and texts and recorded and submitted their work directly via Google Classroom. Thanks to all pupils and parents and carers for engaging so wholeheartedly with our Virtual Eisteddfod – it has been a huge success with Joe Dingle winning the Senior Welsh Chair award Poppy Newton-Williams winning the Junior Welsh Chair. Instrumental winners included Sophia Evans (piano), Larissa Clee (clarinet), Olivia Geddes (violin), Jamie Harrowing (piano) and Ella Verderame, Annalise Traylor & Finty Kehoe (singing). Cymraeg, English, Dance and Drama winners included David Sheldon, Matt Neeson, Nia Card, Ben Harris, Matt Timms and Ioan Matthews. ‘Wales has got Talent’ was won by Scarlett Osborne and Finty Kehoe and Nia Card won the Junior version. Congratulations to everyone and to Powys who won the Eisteddfod! Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

After months of home learning, we are able to welcome our children back to the classroom. We were greeted with a rainbow of smiling faces from our children who we have greatly missed. The children are having fun playing and learning together once more and school has become alive again with the sound of laughter. We would like to say a special welcome our new pupils who have recently joined us and also welcome our youngest pupils, our rising threes to our nursery. You have all been super stars and have settled in brilliantly during these strange times. We are fully aware how stressful and worrying it can be for parents when choosing a school for their child. Here at Newton, we pride ourselves to reassure you that your child’s well-being and safety is paramount to us. Through child led, stimulating activities we encourage the children to learn through play, this then ensures a smooth transition from home to school. After all, happy children learn best! If you have a little one who is just turning three and you are undecided about what school to choose, why don’t you check out our school’s website and Facebook page for our early years setting videos? If you have any questions please feel free to email the school on newtonprimaryschool@bridgend.gov.uk Mrs R John Head Teacher

SPRING TERM NEWS - NOTTAGE PRIMARY

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL I’m delighted that we appear to be on the journey away from the pandemic’s worst effects. This has had an unprecedented impact on lives and experiences, but it is in the new hope from vaccines that we look to the future with some optimism. Beyond the grief and suffering caused by COVID-19, a huge effect has been the challenges it’s presented to young people around the world. However, I hold on to the belief that this test will have engendered resilience, agency, and a newfound appreciation for the social side of school for our pupils. It challenged us, as adults, too. Whether in our personal or professional lives, we have all had to confront the many hurdles and emerge from them with a desire to keep doing the best for each other and our children. For my own team this has been the very toughest of years. It’s also been, however, the year of most professional growth. The skills our team have learnt, the dedication they have shown, and the flexibility they have demonstrated simply amaze me every day. Our pupils enjoyed an excellent and truly ‘uninterrupted’ education. We are looking forward to welcoming our new pupils after Easter too. Helen Hier, Head Teacher

The Nottage family wellbeing has continued to be at the heart of our work and will continue to be a priority for some time to come yet. One icy February morning, a bit tired from travelling a group of bears in need of warm hugs and forever homes arrived, they were very sad there were no pupils in our classes. We told them they were welcome to stay until our pupils were back. Within a few days they were up to mischief in the classrooms looking for hugs! Eventually half of our bear friends got to go to their forever homes and just a few weeks later they were all getting the lovely hugs they needed. Every child in School has their own Nottage Bear to hug and bring them some peace and comfort. We are grateful that we are now ALL back together and school life has resumed with full classrooms and the sound of children’s laughter out in the playground. The Bear project was kindly funded by Nottage Primary PTA.

WHY WOULD YOU?

LITTLE SISTER

TO A VACCINAYSAYER

Beneath the hood of what we should, Our dreams cascade of what we would, For we must shed the cloak, traditional, To float upon future, conditional.

Well hey there little sister, Just take a look at you, It only seems like last week You wore pink and I wore blue. New matching frocks at Whitsun That became our Sunday best, With t-bar shoes, white ankle socks, We really passed the test. But here you are the years have flown, You’ve children of your own, But you’re still my little sister, Although you’re fully grown. You’re gone now little sister, You’ve sadly passed away. Those memories live in my heart, So you’re with me every day. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

To most right minded people It’s a source of consternation That there still are folk like you Who refuse the vaccination Be it fear of the big needles Or asserting body rights You gamble with your safety And other people’s plights You can’t be forced to have it And that’s a legal flaw If I had the means The I would change the law If you go down with Covid That’s no one else’s fault If you pass it to another Then I’d charge you with assault And if that person died Though really I’d hope not You’d be up against a wall And very likely shot The pandemic will remain Whilst you lot are about So don’t you think it’s time You got it sorted out We want shops and pubs to open We need our holidays And that’s not going to happen Whilst we suffer this malaise So to help restore normality And make our lives less drab Get your bloody finger out And go and get the jab Jim Kyle, North Cornelly

What would you? why would you? Knowing then, what we know too? What would you for yourself arrange, When buffered by a wind of change? Why would you write recurring story, Through others thoughts of hope and glory? When you can float on life’s rich sea, And weave your coloured tapestry? Will Edwards, Porthcawl

TWO METRES APART                                         People say ‘good morning’ as they walk past How long will Social distancing last? Some take it seriously, some treat it with scorn But I think for a long time it will be the norm.  Feel sorry for people who worry too much living their lives without tender touch Feel sorry for the people who do not give a toss And do not feel sympathy for others loss. It is not hard to give a wide berth, So show your respect, do it with mirth John Griffiths Broadlands, Bridgend

SOMETHING BLUE Something borrowed Something blue, Is it false, or is it true? A watercolour azure sky Jewelled in lapis lazuli. Orchids dyed through their stems, Gleam on spikes of turquoise gems, A spectrum of colour not quite true. Eyes of intense pithalo blue, Hide deceiving lies, Beneath those hazy, lazy cerulean skies, Retreating into a Prussian blue mood, They await Egyptian blue bluebells in spring, That ring louder, surer than those at a wedding. Yet are they any bluer, or any truer Than the cobalt blue delphiniums I grew, Once in a blue moon. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

SEE YOU AGAIN MY FRIEND It’s the morning after, reality has hit You’re really gone The darkness got you And today we ponder in this empty pit You rarely verbalised your thoughts  But we knew your smile was broken You quietly shone like an angel  And now your truth shall be spoken  Not a soul in the world  Could share a bad word about you  Your love, kindness and compassion  Shall forever light Bridgend right the way through

ONLY A GLIMPSE

Only a shimmer of silver, but – Our very first glimpse of the sea And our hearts beat with joy, three girls Yellow balloons, glitter and booze and one boy, Everything pretty for your soul to dwell  Of the fun that was soon to be We shall pray, smile, cheer and cry  How into the waves we’d be dipping With each and every cell Though oft from the breakers we’d flee But it wouldn’t be long we’d be swimming I remember the first time we met You gave me your coat because I was cold  so strong Water babies, made for the sea. Your heart shone so bright For that this memory shall never grow old   And still sometimes a shimmer of silver Reminds us of pleasure that’s past Everybody has a story to tell  Though our days in the sea may be over About the beautiful person that was you  There are joys that for ever will last Bridgend has lost its sparkle  For God gives us glimpses of glory And so tonight and forever, we will That come from a far distant shore remember you.  And of joy that will be in eternity Tuesday Turner Where sorrow and pain are no more. Brackla, Bridgend   So watch out for those shimmers of silver Hear the voice that calls from afar For One has been sent to show us the way It is Jesus, the Bright Morning Star. Since 1911, March 8th has been celebrated as International Women’s Day and it highlights women’s achievements in science, culture, education and politics. It campaigns to improve the lives of women around the globe. Although progress has been made, the last year has also highlighted that women have been heavily impacted by the pandemic and that there is still so much to do. This year’s theme is: #ChooseToChallenge and Bridgend Labour Women got involved online, challenging gender bias and inequality. Together, we can create an inclusive world. Sarah Murphy our prospective candidate for the Senedd elections on May 6th has also reminded us that “here in Wales, more than £3.3 million has been committed this year to provide free period products to girls and women on low-incomes and to all learners in schools and FE colleges, with Bridgend College being one of the first. It’s a big step in the right direction, but we must strive for more and better, including closing the gender pay gap, ending violence against women, and ensuring women in business, are heard and represented.” To contact Bridgend Labour Women’s Forum please email: bridgend.labour.women@gmail.com. They say lighting never strikes twice but for Porthcawl Shout Forum it has with the passing of two of its senior members, Brian Saunders and Clive Mort. Vice Chairman Brian had a big moral compass always generous and helpful to anyone needing assistance especially those who could not help themselves. He worked constantly against many unjust local plans spending years fighting DEFRA in London (and winning) to protect the Harbour Porpoises breeding grounds off Rest Bay. He was a dedicated supporter of the many Shout events highlighting the lack of Porthcawl facilities such as the John Street Spoof swimming gala, “Selling” the thousands of tons of harbour mud dumped on Salt Lake and paying BCBC to seed the Roundabouts with Poppies as a dedication to those who fell in war. It was indeed a privilege to know Brian who had painful ill health in his last years but was always positive and mindful of those worst off, he caught Covid while receiving treatment in the Princess of Wales hospital. Clive was Managing Director of Thomas Ward, ship breakers in Briton Ferry and a main Board Director in Sheffield. During his second career he helped many young people into employment as part of the Governments YTS (Youth Training Scheme) in Wales. He supported many Porthcawl organizations such as Trinity Church, Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, U3A and was not only a founder member of Porthcawl Shout but in 2003 helped set up County Shout in Bridgend as part of the Welsh Assembly Government £17.5 million program to encourage older people to have a voice. Clive worked hard to support Shouts many projects to improve Porthcawl including the Samtampa Disaster memorial and the long awaited Regeneration Plan. Brian and Clive, will be sorely missed by the town they loved so much. Gary Victor Porthcawl Shout Forum

PORTHCAWL FREEMASONS GIVE £2,380 TO LOCAL CHARITIES Freemasons are well known for their charitable giving and the Venables Llewelyn Lodge in Porthcawl is no exception. Over the last year, during the COVID-19 pandemic, its members have given over £2,300 to several local charities to help them through the crisis. Although not able to meet in person because of the lockdown restrictions, the members of the Venables Llewelyn Lodge have been active with their fundraising, and have given donations of: £50 to the British Legion, £200 to Ty Hafan, £250 to The Sandville, £1,082 to the Porthcawl foodbank, £200 to Porthcawl Comprehensive’s technology staff who have been producing safety visors for front-line workers, and £600 to the Porthcawl Covid-19 Strategy Group for their work in supporting the vulnerable residents of Porthcawl and also helping in the refurbishment of computers to aid distance learning for school pupils. A spokesman for the Venables Llewelyn Lodge said: “We are proud to support these local organisations and salute the sterling work they are all doing. With Freemasonry being at the heart of our community we are particularly happy, especially at this difficult time, to be able to support the charities that operate in and for the community in Porthcawl.” Phil Protheroe

IT’S GOOD TO TALK! Has lockdown left you bored and lonely? How about lifting your spirits by volunteering? Befriending by phone helps you and the person you call, as a weekly chat can help you both reconnect with the world! Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) is looking for volunteers aged 18 plus to join their Covid-19 Telephone Befriending Service, which offers help and support to the most vulnerable members of our communities at this unsettling time, through conversations. By helping to reduce fears for those experiencing anxiety and uncertainty, BAVO’s telephone project offers a friendly voice at a moment of increased isolation and loneliness. Make a difference to someone’s day… an hour of your day goes a long way! For further details contact BAVO, T: 01656 810400 or email: bavo@bavo.org.uk Jane Hall – BAVO

FEATURES PORTHCAWL VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY CLEAN UP Whilst we have been unable to meet as a group our members have continued to clear our town of litter. We now have 535 members in our Facebook group and it’s great to see pictures of families getting involved. During lockdown we have cleared a lot of litter that has been in hedgerows so long the packaging was discontinued years ago! It’s disappointing to report that the better weather with people exercising resulted in 5 bags of litter being collected by our volunteers one Sunday in the area of Salt Lake car park . Once Covid guidelines allow, we intend to go back to meeting on a Sunday afternoon at 4pm on the Eastern Promenade. Please join our Facebook group ‘Porthcawl Volunteer Community Cleanup’ to stay up to date Helen Lynn

PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL We all hope this finds you all in good health and better still good spirits. Spring is on its way and, hopefully we will have more news about coming out of Lock down and it can’t come fast enough, Many of our celebrations have either had to be cancelled, put on hold or carried out virtually. Our Church service has been cancelled and our 70th birthday party will take place when we are safe to meet outside for an afternoon tea/garden party. When we have had our second vaccinations we should be able to have a committee meeting , socially distanced of course to organise things. We hope everyone managed to see loved ones on Mother’s day, even if it was over Skype or Zoom. Take care everyone. Liz Jones Club Sec

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa We are raring to go, the workshop is ready, as soon as we deem it right to re-open. We have received quite a few tools during the last lock down. We are very grateful, but our shelves are full and we feel that we cannot receive any more tools or sewing machines at the moment. We are anticipating allocations for Ghana , and are grateful to Rodney Knight for a previously assembled auto kit and to Pam and Derek Murden who have been busy making up haberdashery kits. Carpentry kits are urgently required. So we welcome a few new volunteers to sharpen chisels and saws, put new handles into hammers and clean up rusty old tools. It will soon be ‘all hands on deck’. David Bevan has been busy making crates .We have managed to donate over £2000 to our projects during the last year in Malawi and Tanzania. Can we thank the community for their interest and continued support. A very big thank you to our team of willing volunteers. This modest work does really change lives. information about our work, visit the web site, tfsr.org John Hanson, Group Coordinator Tel: 01656 786367

PORTHCAWL U3A Things are starting to change slowly and at least some of us will this year be able to have Easter Egg hunts in our gardens.   By the time you read this, you will I hope, have completed your Census 2021, because nobody wants to get fined a £1000!  And all of us will have had our 1st injections, many will have had their 2nd but we must still be careful as we are allowed out and our shops open again because it will still be a long time before all are protected from Covid.  That’s because there are a lot of people to be done younger than us! This means that we will continue to Zoom with those who like to Zoom.  Our Conversations, Philosophy, Mindfulness, Keep Fit, Quiz and Book Groups are all meeting regularly and are to be congratulated as coping sometimes with systems that fluctuate with the weather is not always easy. We hope the summer will be kind to us allowing us to continue to improve our gardens along with our tans until we are allowed to meet in bigger groups inside as we used to.  Stay safe. We will meet again! Sally A Corbett Chair

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Do you need a fresh start? As the Covid19 regulations are slowly being rolled back, and we take further steps on the pathway to near normality, perhaps you feel ready to start life afresh. The message of the Christian faith is that we can have a fresh start, forgiveness for our failures and a new kind of life by following Jesus Christ. The first Easter, Jesus Christ died on the cross for us. On the Easter Sunday he rose again to prove that his sacrifice had been successful. The stone at the entrance to his tomb was rolled away, this was not to let Jesus out, but let humanity in! The Easter message ‘He is not here, He is risen!’ gives reason for faith, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ carries with it an offer of life abundant and eternal. The Apostle Paul sums it up in this way: ‘If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come’. If you need a fresh start why not look closer at Jesus? If you would like to know more about the Christian faith, please contact faith@gilgal.co.uk or visit us at www.gilgal.co.uk REV. MARTIN GILLARD Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl

HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Virginia Hall was a rare breed, an American who worked for the SOE. In October 1941, Virginia learned that the Nazis had incarcerated twelve agents in the Mauzac prison near Bergerac. With the aid of Gaby Bloch, wife of prisoner JeanPierre Bloch, Virginia smuggled tools and sardine tins into the prison. With these tools and tins the prisoners made a key to the prison door and on 15 July 1942 they escaped and hid in the woods. After an intense manhunt, Virginia helped the men to flee into Spain then on to Britain. Later, several of the escapees returned to France to lead SOE networks. Even though Virginia had a wooden leg - the result of a pre-war shooting accident - distinctive red hair and spoke French with a broad American accent, the Nazis failed to capture her. Indeed, she thrived in France, assisting the Resistance in numerous heroic operations. While working for the SOE, Virginia fell in love with a colleague, Paul Goillot. After the war, the couple lived together and eventually married in 1957. WILLIAM MORGAN William Morgan, a doctor’s son, was born in the parish of Newcastle, Bridgend in May 1750. He studied medicine and, on his father’s death in 1772 took over his medical practice in Bridgend but youth, inexperience, and his clubfoot did not endear him to his patients. He moved to London to stay with his uncle, the philosopher, Dr Richard Price, who had been consulted on various financial matters by the Society for Equitable Assurances, later to become Equitable Life. Price is said to have asked his nephew if he knew mathematics, receiving the answer – “No Uncle but I can learn.”

Morgan became the Society’s actuary in 1775. At this time an actuary was simply a keeper of accounts. It was due to his application of scientific discipline to the subject that ‘actuary’ took on its present definition. He pioneered the use of cause of death analysis to look at the correlation between life expectancy against the actual length of life and his financial acumen and rigorous mathematical principles ensured that the Society remained profitable. He was their actuary for 55 years until his retirement at age 80. He is rightly regarded as the father of modern actuarial science. Ian Price Bridgend & District Local History Society

MORRIS POWER – A PORTHCAWL PILOT

Morris was born in Porthcawl in 1834 to William and Mary Power from Wexford Ireland. Wishing him to be christened in a Roman Catholic Church his parents carried Morris to Swansea, sleeping in the sandhills on a journey, which took three days. In the 1861 Census, Mary is a widow, and Morris and his brother John are ‘Trinity workers’: a maritime charity looking after the welfare of seaman and maintenance of lighthouses. By 1871, Morris had got married to Martha David, began his forty-year career as a pilot in Porthcawl Dock and lived in Pilots Row. In the late 1870’s, when it was proposed to demolish Pilots Row (behind the now Pier Hotel) the family moved to 5, Well Street. (photo) Pilots Row wasn’t actually demolished until the late 1890’s. In January 1893, carrying out an inspection, Morris fell on board the SS Paragon, severely injuring his side. Dr Williams, who attended to his injuries, was his son-in-law. Known locally, as Captain Power, Morris died on 6th December 1914, twelve years after his wife. He left five daughters and a son; Richard who having served in the Merchant Service for over 26 years lost his life when his ship was sunk, off Cornwall, by a German mine in 1917. Ceri Joseph

LEGAL AGREEMENTS VS COURT – WHICH IS BETTER? ESTATE ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGING PROPERTY Estate Administration and Managing Property & Financial Affairs during a Global Pandemic During the pandemic no firm has been unaffected and the private client sector is always adapting to challenging circumstances. Everyone is seeking new approaches to continue being able to help their clients. Travel restrictions or safeguarding issues might mean you are unable or ill advised to access property or personal files as an executor or personal representative. However, there are a variety of free and premium searches which can help to remotely identify details of an estate and which can help gather information on an estate. Such searches can help to efficiently gather both personal information and financial information concerning live, on-line, lost and dormant accounts, helping minimise reliance on paper reviews. Travel restrictions or safeguarding issues might also mean that executors and personal representatives are having difficulties adhering to clauses specified in the property insurance. Many insurance providers have already extended their terms in respect of inspection clauses, so if you already have insurance in place you should check with the insurer for further information. But if you are currently seeking unoccupied property cover, there are providers offering more favourable inspection clauses or alternatively, there are now providers who can offer cover without any inspection requirements. Restrictions have also made it difficult for family member’s and personal representatives to attend banks and similar organisations in person to notify them of the death. This is because many offices are closed and the staff are working from home. Many organisations have now confirmed you must send your notification by email or submit it online and they will also have their own specialist bereavement team that only deals with those members who have passed away. These dedicated bereavement team’s are there to support you during this time and usually the quickest and easiest way to let them know if you’ve lost someone is by using their online notification form. The landscape for probate and estate administration has changed substantially over the last year and some of these changes seem like they will be here to stay. It is far better for divorcing couples to agree how their assets should be divided, rather than fighting it out in court. A recent Court of Appeal case showed that, where personal animosity persists, it is only too easy for the terms of such agreements to themselves become the subject of dispute. The case concerned a very wealthy couple who, following highly acrimonious divorce proceedings, settled their differences and signed a clean break consent order. In addition to the husband paying several large lump sums to the wife, the order provided that the former matrimonial home which was in the husband’s sole name should be sold ‘forthwith’ and the proceeds divided equally between them. The wife remained living in the house for about two and a half years before a buyer could be found. The eventual sale price was a disappointing £5.9 million. Prior to the sale, the husband served a notice on the wife, requiring her either to vacate the house within four weeks or to pay £5,000 a week in rent. After she refused to do either, he launched possession proceedings against her, seeking £600,000 in damages for alleged trespass. After several appeals, the judge found that the wife was within her rights to occupy the property until the date of its sale. She was required to pay outgoings on the property, but was under no obligation to pay occupational rent. The judge said the case was a cautionary tale, regretting that personal animosity between the former couple had driven them to make use of their considerable resources to litigate the matter through two appeals. Although this case is unusual, it shows the importance of reaching an agreement and keeping a clear head in order to avoid over complicating matters via costly litigation. YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I believe my husband is having an affair. Last week he moved out of the house and I want to file for divorce. He will not admit to the affair, can I look through his bank statements to find evidence? Answer: Absolutely not. Though tempting, looking through your spouse’s private documents such as bank statements or emails can lead to serious repercussions and is a potential criminal offence. This comes as a shock to many clients, especially if they have easy access to their spouses email accounts or mail. However, there is no benefit in doing so. This week, we have seen headlines such as ‘Man sues wife for ‘opening bank statement to see if he was having an affair’. After separating from her husband, Karen Santi looked through her husband’s documents to confirm her suspicions. Whilst this may be seen to many as an understandable thing to do, the Court viewed this as an invasion of her husband’s privacy and was ordered to pay her husband 54,000 in damages. This shows how serious approach the Court takes to confidentiality. The same goes for searching for evidence of finances. Some clients believe that their spouses are not truthful about the amount of money or assets they have. Even though you may believe that you can search their private documents for

evidence, doing so can result in serious consequences. In family law proceedings, there is an on going duty to give ‘full and frank disclosure of your assets’. If you believe your spouse is not giving full disclosure, it is best to issue proceedings so you may ask the Court to impose sanctions for non-disclosure. It is always best to first seek legal advice before you begin the divorce process. Here at Melanie Lazarus & Co Solicitors, we can assist in guiding you on the ‘do’s and dont’s’ when you have separated. MELANIE LAZARUS, Melanie Lazarus & Co

FINANCE WHAT’S THE BEST FINANCIAL DECISION YOU EVER MADE? I asked this of a client recently and they said the best financial decision they ever made was getting divorced! But seriously the best investment decision most people ever made was buying their first house because inflation does the rest; you need a deposit to start and an income to pay the mortgage. There is a little luck involved however because you could be buying at the wrong end of the boom and bust cycle. We have a client who likes houses so much every time he moves he keeps the old house and now has four! Another client says his best investment was a lottery ticket as it made him three million but that’s more luck than judgement and we don’t encourage gambling. If you had used your maximum stocks & shares ISA allowance from the date they commenced in 1999 you could be an ISA millionaire by now. There are several out there but it does mean picking the right shares and funds so it doesn’t just happen on its own, that’s where we come in. What does happen on its own is making money on premium bonds as they create a millionaire every month. The maximum holding is £50,000 just now so the more you hold the better your chance of winning. Joining your employers pension scheme has been one of the best investment decisions most of our clients have ever made. We often see values of half a million and for most people that’s a mini lottery win. The profession you choose or find yourself in might be your best investment decision so using your brains rather than your hands makes a big difference. One manual worker however made it work in his favour, his name was Percy Shaw from Halifax and he became a road contractor. One night driving home in the dark a cat sitting on a fence looked at him and he had that ‘eureka moment’ from the reflection. He became a millionaire by inventing the cat’s eyes on all our roads today. I have a grandson who has an entrepreneurial streak and wants to get into ‘penny shares’ it might be his best money decision ever but needs some tips, can anyone help? SPRING CLEAN Spring is [hopefully!] now in the air, and the classic springcleaning will be undertaken by many. Gardens, garages and cupboards are having their annual tidy up, and doubtless the queue for the tip will be huge! However, how many of you take this same opportunity to do a spring clean on your finances? Why not make some time this year? As a starter, are you one of the many thousands of mortgage holders whose deals have expired and are now on the standard variable rate? Interest rates are still at an all time low, and there are some great rates available. Switching to a new mortgage rate could potentially save you thousands. Another often overlooked area is that of protection. When did you last check what level of life, critical illness and income protection cover you have? If you’ve changed employers in the last few years you may no longer have the same levels of these types of protection that you once did. Additionally, if you’ve started, or extended the family, are you comfortable that your 40 | seaside news

loved ones would be adequately catered for should the worst happen? Do any existing plans you hold still match their original purpose? For example, have you topped up the mortgage, or changed the term, but left the original covers in place? You could have a shortfall? And when did you last review your retirement plans? Are you still on track to retire on your terms? Why not give me a call on 01656 771747, or 07859 129850. 95% IS BACK FOR FIRST-TIME BUYERS As I write, the news that all first time buyers were waiting on is that one of the country’s major lenders is offering new 95% scheme for those purchasers only. It’s only available authorised through mortgage brokers and we are delighted to be able to offer this scheme to our Clients. So, if you are a first time house purchaser with a 5% deposit, call us without delay, with applications going into the lender from all over the UK. Call 01656 782545 / 07768 418308, with the mobile available out of hours up till 10pm even on weekends. Older Clients who already have a Later Life or Equity Release scheme, you could now be enjoying the very much lower rates on offer from the market, especially if you took out your scheme more than 3 years ago. We can’t guarantee that everyone will qualify to switch rate, as this will depend on property value, your age and how much you owe currently. However, a phone call could lead to you saving many thousands of pounds in interest. Give us a call and we’ll do a free appraisal for you. At the time of writing, a disturbing survey by MoneySupermarket reveals that a whopping 41% of homeowners with dependents have NO life cover whatsoever, which is a dire situation, especially if there is also a mortgage in place on the family home. One big misunderstanding is that people believe that life assurance is expensive; in reality, many policies can be obtained for little more than 50p per day. With a move away from smoking and with people paying more attention to their health, life cover rates are probably the most competitive they’ve ever been and offer that vital reassurance for families, should the unexpected happen. We’ve all heard about or know about people who have died unexpectedly, and some of these very young, long before their time. Don’t be complacent, pick up the phone and ask us for a quote – we deal with all major insurers. 01656 782545 / 07768 418308. You could be very pleasantly surprised at just how inexpensive it could be for you. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545 / 07768 418308

GARDENING LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

April is such a busy month in the garden, tasks are endless, let’s hope for good weather! On the vegetable front - time to chit and plant 2nd early potatoes, sew all suitable veg seeds out of doors in well prepared soil, but remember to cover and protect if the weather is really chilly. Support peas and prepare for your runner beans being sewn in May by getting those bean sticks ready.  Now is also the time to inspect fruit bushes, strawberry plants for signs of mites, aphids, caterpillars and powdery mildew and treat accordingly.  It’s also the time to apply Apple and Pear scab controls. The Daffodils are still blooming and spring flowers fill our borders, they lift our spirits with their lovely colours, we need them more than ever this year I feel.  Things are easing and The Gardening Club is running a click & collect service for members to purchase their gardening supplies on Saturday mornings.  Our Facebook page gives full details and contact information. Can I remind everyone that our Plant Sale will be held on the • Grass Cutting • Hedge Trimming 8th May, at Cliff Cottage, but • Tree Services will be run on Covid Compliant • Turfing • Decorative Gravel Government Regulation • Fencing guidelines in place at that time, this may have to be click & collect or limited attendance the Facebook page will give RELIABLE LOCAL SERVICE details nearer the time -   Call Rhys Happy gardening everyone! CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB April prepares her green traffic light and the world says go! (Christopher Marley) Spring is here and it’s time to get busy in the garden, with extra time on our hands your garden will be the best it’s ever been (hopefully!) Early sowing of salads should be ready to pick now, cut off the leaves instead of pulling up the plant and they should re-sprout new ones (a bit like dead-heading really) sow a pinch of seeds every couple of weeks and you should have fresh salad to harvest all spring and summer long (my tortoise loves them!) From mid- April you can start sowing courgettes, cucumbers, leeks, tomatoes and sweetcorn all yummy! Mowing the lawn should be a regular task now, gradually lowering the blades each time if you cut too low too quickly the lawn will repay you by turning yellow! Not pretty. If you grow lilies watch out this month for the scarlet lily beetle, hunt down the adults, they are out and about first, they love a bit of sunshine, a good spray of soapy water should sort them out. The April flower is the daisy, did you know they grow everywhere in the world except Antarctica! Chris Early

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

JASMINE ROSE

Really good to see my former drummer Simon Parsons still involved in original music. He has a new collective project out called All Hail Doris and recently released a fine single/video called ‘Let’s Go Fall In Love Again’, which you will find on YouTube by tapping in Shiny Vinyl Records. Apart from being a top drummer, Simon is a gifted songwriter. He played in Secret Army with me in the 90s for several years until he and our bassist Roy got poached by the then quite big band The Pooh Sticks for their American and Japanese Tour so left the group. That’s rock ‘n’ roll and we’ve always been big mates so check out the video. Another singer/songwriter worth having a listen to is Mark Davis. Mark, who hails from Cardiff but is now based in Bridgend, has an album out on the various download formats called ‘The Young Cardiffian’. He’s had three singles released so far including ‘Dream Machine’, ‘Break My Heart’ and more recently ‘Porthcawl Babe’. Have a listen, it’s good stuff and thanks for the call, Mark, and keep the songs coming! In the meantime, to all our readers, stay safe and well. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks

Introducing 21-year-old Porthcawl Singer/Songwriter, JASMINE ROSE, who has just released her first album! The Alternative/experimental Pop Singer has a unique edge with her sound that pulls far enough away from convention to intrigue the ear, yet remains intelligently coherent enough to indulge in. It’s real. Raw, modern, diverse. An evident love of producing intricate melodies and counter melodies that call, respond, twist and dance around each other in celebration of its very message. Music that makes you feel. Music that you can relate to. The indie pop gem ‘In the City’ is the lead single off of Jasmine Rose’s debut Album Inner City, which was written, performed, recorded and mixed by Jasmine and is out now on all major streaming platforms. This whole album reflects a spirituality that encapsulates the very essence of the heart and soul put into its production. From the outset, the general mood of each track displays many rich and colourful ambient textures. The album follows and builds off her debut 2020 singles ‘Free’ and ‘Paradise’. Definitely not to be missed – check out Jasmine’s social media and links to download or stream the album, for your continued pleasure. https://jasminerose.lnk.to/innercity https://jasminerose.lnk.to/ free https://jasminerose.lnk.to/paradise https://jasminerosej. bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jasmine_rose_official/ https://www. facebook.com/JasmineRoseOfficially https://www.tiktok.com/@ jasmineroseofficial?lang=en

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW A few weeks ago, during one of the dark evenings of winter, I came across a Facebook posting by Nigel Horn, who used to run iDailies, a filmprocessing laboratory in West London. Now retired, Nigel wrote to draw attention to the 1968 BBC adaptation of the classic M.R. James ghost story entitled ‘Whistle And I’ll Come To You’. Michael Hordern played the main character and Jonathan Miller directed the production, filmed in black & white. I searched for it on YouTube and found it. This was ghostly horror in a totally different league from what would be portrayed now. In Nigel’s words, it was “the most utterly brilliant realisation of supernatural terror with no CGI or visual effects, just a stunningly imagined, directed, acted, shot and edited work of genius”. With such a recommendation, I sat back to watch it, and having watched it once, I watched it again. Hordern’s portrayal of Professor Parkins, the somewhat eccentric main character bumbling his way through a seaside holiday on a lonely part of the East Anglian coast is, indeed, a timeless classic in its own right and a lesson to all who wish to put horror on the screen. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Alan Thomas Memorial Competition where each member could enter up to 4 digital images, Mono only, no colour. Ralph Snook from Bristol judged the event live on zoom. The winner of this competition was decided by the sum of their 2 top scoring entries. It was extremely close this year and the winner wasn’t decided until the very last image of the night when William Baker won with his second 20 of the night. Congratulations William. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us, we usually meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR but our meetings are currently suspended due to the Coronavirus situation so we’re now holding competitions etc. online instead. Our program is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk Geoff Baker

TIDES

PORTHCAWL TOWN AFC In a year like no other, and in circumstances that none of us have every experienced before, the Coronavirus hit us all! Whilst many clubs would have just sat back to ride out the tide, our re-jigged committee decided to roll their sleeves up and give the long neglected off field facilities a makeover. This has been done with the aim of getting the club back playing football where it belongs... the Welsh League. As said, the facilities needed huge work. A path needed to be laid around the pitch Changing rooms needed updating with new toilets. Dug outs made bigger (in process)100 seats fitted into the old stand, plus a number of smaller tasks! Obviously, these tasks could not have been even considered without the absolutely fantastic support from our sponsors - our main sponsor, Cultech Ltd and our Governing Body, the PAA. When committee member Peter Crofts proposed the idea of board sponsors, there were not many of us who thought we would get more than a dozen loyal supporters. 40 boards later and the boards keep rolling in! We have been totally overwhelmed, from local builders to estate agents, restaurants to hairdressers, plant hire to bouncy castle hire. The pictures show what we have achieve so far... there’s loads more to come and we will keep you informed along with some on-field news very soon we hope! Kevin Downes

SPORT

MARATHON OF A WEEKEND There were some absolutely amazing Porthcawl Runners performances across the board during the virtual ‘A Marathon of a Weekend’ #FromMyDoor challenge held recently. The event saw members of six Bridgend County Running League clubs battle it for prizes and friendly bragging rights across various categories, virtually speaking. Among the standout Porthcawl performers were Adrian Cartlidge, who was 1st in the men’s individual event with Julian Jones in 7th. Deb Roberts, Katie-Jayne Picton, Gabriella Lucia Booth and Sarah Morgan – Girl Power – bagged 1st in the ladies’ team event, with J’s Larks in 4th place. And 1st, 2nd and 3rd place all went to Porthcawl Runners in the mixed team event, with 3 Fast, 2 Furious pipping the Bargain Boozers to first place and The Late Comers picking up 3rd. They were closely followed by The Green Milers, O’Brien’s Bacon Baps and Sweary Poppins. It was a great event and an overwhelming performance from our amazing club! Everyone who took part also receive a lovely multi-club buff. Well done to all that took part and THANK YOU to everyone who supported too! Find and follow us on social media to see more of the great things going on at the club! Carl Field
