980 HOMES – BUT WHERE IS THE ROOM PLEASE LOOK AFTER THIS BOOK FOR PORTHCAWL’S FUTURE? Dear Editor, Dear Editor, Porthcawl has waited decades for regeneration. We cannot afford to spend the next decade discovering we got the balance wrong. Look at Hayle Harbour in Cornwall. Its regeneration has evolved over decades, with plans repeatedly reconsidered. Physical construction at North Quay began in 2020 and, nearly seven years later, substantial development and abandoned construction areas remain. Surely Porthcawl should learn from the experience of other waterfront schemes before construction begins? Up to 980 homes are proposed across Porthcawl’s regeneration areas. Housing has a place, but should it overwhelm some of the most valuable waterfront land our town will ever have? Porthcawl desperately needs year-round jobs, investment and opportunity. That means giving hotels, leisure facilities, restaurants, attractions, green spaces and visitor infrastructure enough room not merely to exist, but to succeed and expand. Where are the committed leisure investors? And does the current housing-led balance give them an exciting seaside destination worth investing in? Once prime waterfront land is covered by housing, roads and infrastructure, we cannot simply get it back. Let’s learn from elsewhere and rethink now — not after years of construction and amendments. Get the balance right from the beginning. SOS Porthcawl Save Our Seaside

PROPERTY WALES PROPERTY MARKET OVERVIEW The latest UK House Price Index shows that the average house price in Wales stood at £213,000 in June 2026, representing an annual increase of 1.8%. Of Wales’s 22 local authority areas, 19 recorded annual house price growth. Blaenau Gwent saw the strongest increase at 8.9%, while Pembrokeshire experienced the largest fall, with prices down 4.2%. Sales volumes paint a more challenging picture. Across Wales, completed transactions have fallen, with 3,073 sales recorded in April 2025 compared with 2,003 in April 2026. Over the wider 12-month period, annual sales volumes decreased by circa 16%. There are, however, several factors behind these figures. Higher rates of Land Transaction Tax increased by one percentage point from December 2024, while changing mortgage rates and wider economic and geopolitical uncertainty have continued to influence buyer confidence and affordability. It is also important to understand that official completed-sales data inevitably looks backwards. A property appearing in the statistics may have been marketed and had a sale agreed several months earlier. There is then a further delay while completed transactions are registered and incorporated into official figures. Therefore, although June is among the latest house-price data available as we write, it reflects market activity that began considerably earlier in the year. For a more immediate indication of market conditions, we can look closer to home at properties currently coming to market and sales being agreed. Across Porthcawl and the surrounding areas, during the six

weeks to 13 September, there were 92 new instructions, compared with 101 during the equivalent period last year – a reduction of 8.9%. However, sales agreed have proved considerably more resilient. There were 75 sales agreed, compared with 76 last year, representing a reduction of just 1.3%. That comparison is significant. While the number of new properties coming to market fell by 8.9%, sales agreed declined by only 1.3%. The ratio of sales agreed to new instructions therefore increased from approximately 75.2% last year to 81.5% this year, representing an improvement of around 8.4%. This suggests that while fewer properties are coming to market, buyer activity remains comparatively strong, with sales agreed holding up particularly well against the reduction in new stock. For homeowners, the message is that fewer properties coming to market does not necessarily mean fewer buyers. Properties that are positioned correctly and marketed effectively are still attracting buyers and achieving sales. The Welsh market may have changed, but locally, the figures suggest there is still plenty of activity for sellers who approach the market with the right strategy. For more information or to discuss any aspect of the housing market, contact McHattons Estate Agents. Local data includes postcodes CF33 4, CF33 5, CF36 3, CF36 5. From 2nd Aug – 13th Sept. BOOKS BOOK OF THE MONTH A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO BREAKING AND ENTERING by ANDREW HUNTER MURRAY My name is Al. I live in wealthy people's second homes while their real owners are away. I don't rob them, I don't damage anything. I'm more an unofficial house-sitter than an actual criminal. Life is good. Or it was - until last night, when my friends and I broke into the wrong place, on the wrong day, and someone wound up dead. And now - now we're in a great deal of trouble.

BEYOND ONE’S REACH

ADD DAYS TO YOUR LIFE

WHERE ARE MY GLASSES?

Upon the heather, lying back, gaze resting on a sky Of stars, O so, so many stars, his only thought was why Why they filled the dark of space, it seemed they were as one. A myriad of beckoning points, the light behind God’s throne.

I came to Porthcawl to relax and enjoy life by the sea I know this lifestyle suits me I hope to add Days to my Life And put Life into my Days

“Where are my glasses” I heard him say For the fifteenth time today It’s only mid morning so there’s more to come Since he added distance glasses to his compendium

He’d rested longer than he should, his Mam would let him know As stumbling down the terraced streets, her voice worse than a blow It mattered little, he had seen the one true face of God It smiled at him, that moment locked, his future understood Through countless days and growing years, he gave no chance to fail He stubbornly regained his path, his fate a constant goal He rose, then fell and rose again, the path was always on Until that day, that moment when a voice told him he’d won They gave to him, from countless tests, his ladder to the stars. A journey upward as no man had ever gone so far Now floating here, within his grasp, the answer he’d once sought Where we began and where we’ll go, blind fate may matter not. Black was this endless universe, with fraction points of light Bright were their sparkling myriad blaze, within this constant night He alone could witness sights, not seen by those who stood On earth, while he in wonder, met again the face of God. Ours is this sudden chance to flash, a silent point of light. Given the gift to cast our glow within eternal night. Our place in this great universe, though infinitely small Still sends our lifetime spark out where it becomes part of all. Howard Williams, Porthcawl

Oh, what bliss! Make the most of every day Our lives can soon change Be it a slip when reminding yourself how to skip An awkward stretch when something is out of reach Be positive your body should soon mend An act of kindness goes a long way Post an issue of the Seaside News to a friend Smile; say hello, show an interest in others Too many home grown tomatoes You will always find some takers Oh, what bliss! Continue to put Life into your Days Elizabeth, Porthcawl

NO TIME FOR AUTUMN I wish the world would linger for a while, let summer be a season, not a trial. This year the trees rehearsed their fall too soon, spilling autumn leaves beneath an August moon. Now time, like weather, does not wait its turn— shelves full of chocolate treats cause concern, for the spooks, ghosts and ghouls of Halloween and Guy Fawkes revelries haven’t left the scene. Now every season rushes through the door— as Christmas goods restock every shop floor. Weather and commerce shouting, “what comes next?” No wonder we humans are so perplexed. Claudette Evans, Kenfig Hill

It was bad enough when he only needed them to read But now the searching is a harder task indeed “I had them earlier where have they gone” Now a familiar morning song “Where did you last have them “her useful reply “If I knew that I wouldn’t be asking would I” The search continued eventually found with such ease I’m going out soon now where are my keys ? Kevin Bywater, Porthcawl

WHISPER The trees stand tall, the trees stand proud, and when they speak it's never out loud. They gaze at the bushes and they watch the grass, as the days march by and the years drift past. The gorse covered mountains reach up to the sky looking down on the world as the world rushes by. The rain beats its drum, the snow lines the ground, footprints disappear, never to be found. Then the Sun breaks out, giving warmth to us all, until the summer departs and the leaves start to fall. But it's the wind that I fear, the wind that I dread, I can't get its whisper out of my head. Because it's the wind, the wind be it warm, cold or cool, that taunts me each day and knows I'm the fool. The fool that stood there and watched you depart, standing alone with a hole in my heart. 'You fool, you fool' it whispers my way, and that wind is spot on, that's all I can say. John Coutanche, Porthcawl

Will we have an Indian summer? Just a thought! We could wear the 'SALE' clothes we recently bought, But for now, no flip-flops or skimpy tops Just sensible gear that repels raindrops. Bring out the brollies, macs and wellies Long tops and jackets, no exposed bellies, Forget dining 'Al fresco' sipping sparkling wine, Barbecues can wait until next year's sunshine.

I never understood why people weren't crying Just walking their dogs, obliviously smiling A normal day for them, life happily continues Whilst I'm so destroyed I feel my insides have been bruised How can people still smile now that you're gone? How can life continue without my precious grandad John? There are no words to explain my broken spirit That your memory will fade I do so fear it The only comfort is knowing that heaven is waiting And to tell you I love you I will never stop stating God opened his gates and granted you rest For having you in my life I was truly blessed I'll see you again John, I love you beyond measure And my memories of you I will forever treasure. Tuesday Turner, Bridgend

Summer has made a swift retreat Flicking the switch off on intense heat. In its place, a fresh autumnal cool On cue as children head back to school. It's been hot! It's been humid! that's for sure Difficult for most people to endure, Now it's grey skies, cloud and rain, sweet rain, Farmers can breathe a sigh of relief once again. Let's just wait, things seem to change each day, We must embrace whatever comes our way it spoils the surprise if we know beforehand, We can't expect things to be perfectly planned. Once Halloween comes, Bonfire Night will come and go, Who Knows! on Christmas Day we may even have snow. Whatever the weather there'll be twinkling lights To brighten the sky on those dark Winter nights. Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend

The routine consoles me, hunting through the glistening peaks for crockery and spoons sunk deep in the frothy warmth. I plunge my hands through the floating blanket searching by touch, once a game for children hunting the bath soap. A single dish, plate and spoon I lift from the depths, far fewer than before, racked on the drainer water running like tears. Plug pulled and liquid sinking low spiralling round the drain, the maelstrom takes all away stranded flotsam left behind. Derek Priest, Pontypridd

BIRTHDAY SMILES My September birthday rushes past. Another year flown by. It's not a 'special' birthday, But left a magic smile. Walking into town one day A thought popped in my head. I couldn't get it out again Until I went to bed. That birthday has a special name Not one that I'd been told. Three quarters of century! Boy does that feel old. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

IT'S NOT A SIN Feel the rhythm in your soul, Let's party every day, Listen to the music all around, Let's boogie the night away, Smell the aroma of your favourite brew, Or of the blossoms all around, So many pleasures are given to us, Of sight, touch, taste and sound. So feel them all, they're free to use, Just stop and breathe them in, Take time out from your busy lives, Go on try, it's not a sin. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL As I write this the glorious summer weather seems to have ended however I pleased that since my previous report much has happened in Porthcawl . Work has started at long last on the refurbishment of John St toilets with the programme of works due to complete after 12 weeks hopefully in time for Christmas. At the same time I understand that work is due to start at the end of September on a new pedestrian crossing on Newton Nottage Rd. A much needed long term project finally coming to fruition! There have been many events occurring and my thanks to Councillor Deputy Mayor Debbie Motley for attending on my behalf a performance of the Porthcawl Male voice choir in concert with soloist Soprano Angharad Rees at All Saints church. A great concert well attended but sadly missed by me!

Cllr. Martin Rock

I attended the inaugural meeting of the Porthcawl Classic car club and presented cheques for a total of £550 to nominated charities. Well done with promise of more shows to come. Recently I was pleased to host a first visit of our new Civil partnership through twinning with Ploudalmezeau a town in Brittany.. The weekend started with a warm welcome to Mr David Carrega, deputies and guests which included performances from Porthcawl male voice choir and 'Sounds familiar' choir at the High Tide,. Over the weekend events included a visit to the Museum, a hosted BBQ (despite inclement weather) with Mr & Mrs Emment-Lewis, and finishing with a guided tour of the Life boat station and National coast watch tower. I would like to personally thank everyone for their hard work in making this event happen and helping to strengthen our cultural ties . I hope more events like this will occur in the future. Cllr. NEWS CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY

BRINGING THE MONSTER PARK BACK

It is always a pleasure to get out and about in Porthcawl and meet the people and organisations doing so much for our town. I recently visited Porthcawl YMCA with Cllr John Spanswick, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, to see how Pride in Place funding is supporting The Y Centre on John Street. They have received £7,275 towards a new boiler, helping this important community facility continue its fantastic work. I’ve recently spoken out in support of the RNLI following unacceptable abuse directed at its staff and volunteers. The RNLI does extraordinary work saving lives, and in Porthcawl we can be especially proud of our lifeboat station and its hugely dedicated crew and volunteers. As the local MP, I will always stand up for them and make sure their contribution to our community is recognised. I’ve launched my Bridgend & Porthcawl Small Business Awards, celebrating fantastic independent businesses. I want Porthcawl residents to nominate local businesses they believe deserve recognition. Find more details at my website www.chriselmore. wales. Finally, my next bus trip to London is Monday 30th November, with a Porthcawl pick-up and optional tour of Parliament. To book, email chris.elmore.mp@parliament.uk

Now that summer is over, we will spend autumn and winter undertaking a range of essential preparatory works for regeneration. Part of this will involve getting ready to reopen the site that once housed Porthcawl’s former Monster Park, which runs adjacent to the seafront at Sandy Bay. This was once a popular attraction where model dinosaurs lurked beneath the park’s lush foliage and mature trees. The prehistoric beasts may be gone, but the park remains an area of natural beauty, and after decades of being closed off, it will be good to see this green space brought back into public use once more. Other work set to take place in the waterfront area will include the demolition of several seafront structures, including the former Beachcomber where work was postponed during the summer to avoid inconveniencing visitors, residents and local businesses. The old Coney Beach amusement park has been largely cleared already in preparation for this, and if you see work taking place at the Hillsboro and Rest Bay carparks too, this is because local pay-and-display machines are being updated to comply with disability legislation. We will be making several exciting announcements about other local landmarks very soon, so watch out for more news.

LATEST ‘PATHWAYS TO CARE’ EVENT THIS MONTH The latest in our ongoing programme of ‘Pathways to Care’ events will take place this month. Designed to encourage more people to seek careers within the field of social care, this will take place at Bridgend Life Centre between 9.30am - 3pm on 5 - 16 October and is open to all local residents who are aged 18 or over. This is a fantastic opportunity to find out about the different roles available, and to develop your skills and confidence. You don’t need to have previous experience of working in care, but a positive approach and a genuine interest in supporting others is essential. The event features a series of informative workshops that will offer you an in-depth understanding of the expectations and role of a social care worker. It will include opportunities to hear from people working in social care as well as those who receive support, access to accredited training, support for preparing for interviews and more. Working in social care can be incredibly rewarding, so I want to encourage anyone who is considering a career in this area to take advantage of this free programme by contacting our Employability team on (01656) 815317 or employability@ bridgend.gov.uk COUNCILLOR JANE GEBBIE Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

PRIDE IN PLACE FUNDING MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE The UK Government's Pride in Place Impact Fund is already delivering real benefits for communities across the area, helping local organisations improve facilities, strengthen connections and create opportunities for residents. It has been inspiring to see first-hand how this funding is being put to good use by local groups making a positive difference in their neighbourhoods. At Amdani in Cornelly funding has supported their Community Growing Space, where local people can learn food-growing skills, improve access to fresh and healthy produce, and take part in community activities. The project is helping to bring people together while promoting sustainability and encouraging healthier lifestyles. Meanwhile, Kenfig Hill RFC has used funding to install a solar battery, enabling the club to make better use of renewable energy and reduce its energy costs. At Talbot Community Centre, funding has been used to introduce video conferencing facilities in Rees Hall and install new doors, improving accessibility, security and the overall experience for community groups using the venue. These projects demonstrate exactly what the Pride in Place Impact Fund was designed to achieve: enhancing local pride, strengthening community connections and improving shared spaces for residents to enjoy. A WARMER FUTURE FOR YMCA I was really pleased to see how the Pride in Place Impact Fund has been used to support the YMCA in Porthcawl. Thanks to the grant, the YMCA has been able to replace its ageing 14-year-old boiler with a new, more energy-efficient system. This has ensured that the YMCA can offer a warmer, more welcoming and comfortable space for the many people who use its services and facilities every week. The YMCA plays an important role within the local community at Porthcawl, and hosts around 25 different groups alongside its regular youth activities. These groups support people of all ages and the building’s new energy system will benefit them all, especially as we are heading into the colder autumn and winter seasons. This is a great example of how a small grant can have a big impact, and I want to thank everyone at Porthcawl YMCA for their hard work and dedication. In other news, there is just enough time left to take part in public consultation over a proposed Active Travel network that aims to make it easier for people to undertake local journeys – but hurry as the consultation ends on 5 October. You can find out more at our active travel consultation webpage. COUNCILLOR JOHN SPANSWICK Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

ARTS BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR IN ACTION

CÔR BRO OGWR’S SUMMER CONCERT

Autumn is upon us, and another busy month for the Choir. It was an honour to perform at the Mayor’s Civic Ceremony at Hope Baptist Church, Bridgend, followed closely by our Annual Concert. Thanks to all our wonderful audience and special guests who made this an evening to remember. The Choir had a great time singing at the Elvis Gospel Show in Porthcawl, and before we head towards Remembrance Concerts, we team up with Crescendo Youth Choir for a joint concert in Maesteg. If you are thinking of joining a Male Choir, now is the perfect time - we have a few exciting projects coming up!”

On 19th July at Tabernacle Church, Bridgend, Côr Bro Ogwr, along with four internationally renowned soloists sang Rossini’s Pettite Messe Solennelle. This later work of Rossini’s, written for an intimate soiree rather than a religious occasion, contained nothing particularly ‘petite’ nor ‘solemn’! It is a work full of contrasts, with moments of deep contemplation alongside passages of exuberance, wit and operatic flair. The choir was in suitably exuberant form, conducted by its musical Director, Ben Pinnow, accompanied on piano by Laura Deenik, and on harmonium by Benjamin Teague. The soloists were outstanding: Jessica Robinson (soprano), Sian Cameron (mezzo), Joshua Owen Mills (tenor) and Ryan Hugh Ross (baritone) sang the solos, duets and trios that illustrated the operatic nature of this work to fine effect. It was a joyful, exciting concert on a warm summer’s evening. Interested in joining Côr Bro Ogwr? Contact CathClubb@gmail. com, or search CorBroOgwr on Facebook and Instagram for the latest information. Rehearsals for the choir’s Christmas concert began last month at Tabernacle Church, Bridgend. All voices and all ages welcome. No auditions! Judith Fabian

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

We were delighted to perform to a full All Saints Church for our annual concert. The photo shows some of our guests for the evening. Everyone enjoyed the varied programme put together by Musical Director Alec Brooks. Our guest singer was Soprano Angharad Rees who proved to be a superb addition for the evening with the audience insisting on an encore.

Email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk Following our annual concert, we were privileged to sing for French visitors as part of the town twinning programme. As usual we also sang a range of Elvis songs as part of the Elvis festival at the Hi-Tide. Moving on, we will be privileged to sing at the Remembrance Day Service at All Saints Church on 15 November. Our Concert Secretary Mark Smith has again arranged a full Christmas programme of events where we will be singing for different organisations in the community. Earlier in the year, on our Leeds tour, we held a joint concert with Steeton Male Voice Choir, and we are delighted that our Yorkshire friends will be visiting Porthcawl in June 2027 for another joint concert. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Well, I missed it again. It was our wonderful magazine’s 28th anniversary last month, so congratulations to Mat and the team, keep up the good work. They say that when you turn 50, your memory starts to fade, so I’ve got my excuse. Porthcawl songwriter Richard Williams, who records under the guise of Interstella Boy, has released a new single, “Mudlarking in Rotherhithe”, his finest work to date, with its haunting chorus. It’s taken from his excellent album, “Anvil Sand”, which I reviewed earlier in the year. Will’s songs are more like stories of his life, and I hope this song brings him the success he deserves. You can download it on various platforms. It was good to see Reload, the area’s most popular covers band, and they were terrific. Their charismatic singer, Dean Kinsey, who hails from Kenfig Hill, really is a star, and he got me a pint in the break and reminded me when we both ran in the Cornelly Striders years ago (I said my memory is going). Sadly, the band’s splitting up, so catch them now! Finally, watch out for new Eagles tribute band Neargles, from Cefn Cribbwr. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Richard Williams

We are now beginning our new PPPS photography year, and our existing members have re-enrolled. We have several new members who have recently joined our club on our journey and adventure into the photographic world. Over the coming months we will be having several visiting presenters showing us their work together with their narrative of how and why they have put their presentations together. This and our club competitions gives us an opportunity to look and discuss the images and to inspire our members so we might emulate them. Photography is a constant challenge and with the help and knowledge of other members we are continually trying to improve our skills. If you have been impressed with our recent exhibition and photography is something that you are interested in then come and join us. Together we can all improve our photographic skills and have fun whilst learning and improving. It only takes a simple camera or mobile phone to begin what is an exciting journey in producing images and prints that we can all be proud of. ARTS SOUNDS FAMILIAR

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Sounds Familiar performed at a recent event in Porthcawl’s Hi-Tide, to welcome visitors from the Breton coastal town Ploudalmézeau, now twinned with Porthcawl. They shared the evening with Porthcawl Male Choir. Sounds Familiar started their programme with their first performance of ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’ a bold choice considering our French guests, but it was very well received. Welsh language songs included Pantyfedwen and Y Tangnefeddwyr, and songs from film and theatre included a rousing medley of songs from ‘Mary Poppins’. With contrasting pieces from Porthcawl Male Choir, the visitors were treated to range of styles and genres. Sounds Familiar are preparing for their next concert at the end of November, so now would be an ideal time to join this friendly group of songsters. We welcome anyone who enjoys singing - and men will be especially welcome! We sing from copies, so you don’t have to learn the words, and you will have great support from our talented team of Nick Wayland-Evans (M.D.) and Stewart Roberts (accompanist) We meet on Tuesday evenings at the United Services Club in Porthcawl (7pm- 9pm) and you can get further information from our secretary, Cathryn Hodges on 07968 178589. The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence is likely to impinge on our lives in many ways – in fact, it is doing so already – and those of us who work in the creative industries are seeing how unquestionably concerning it is. It is now possible to create just about anything artificially, and it raises questions that go to the heart of human purpose and endeavour. What is the point of doing something if a machine can do it better? It is true that special effects have played a part in filmmaking for almost as long as movie cameras have been around – the “trick photography” that allowed the filmmaker to show things that would otherwise have been impossible to film. But, generally speaking, those special effects played only a minor part in the production. Now, long-deceased actors can be brought back to life in a way that is distasteful and grotesque, and if we’re not careful, we will reach the point where every new piece of music, literature, work of art and cinematic film comes entirely out of a computer. As far as I am concerned, I’d rather have none of it. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films, 07510 934299 Photo: Myself with a real movie camera from the 1970s

PORTHCAWL COMMUNITY CHORUS

Our annual concert at Margam Abbey on July 11th was a resounding success, with a fantastic audience enjoying our performance in the stunning surroundings of the Abbey. It was a fitting way to round off another busy season before our summer break. Now, we’re back in full voice, with renewed enthusiasm and an exciting programme of concerts ahead. Recent weeks have, however, been tinged with sadness as we said farewell to three important figures in the choir’s history. Top Tenor Ernie Smith and Second Tenor Nick Hillier were much-loved members of the choir, while Arnold Tellem served as our Musical Director for 15 years, from 1992 to 2007. All three will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. On a happier note, we’re delighted to welcome new faces to our ranks. Returning choristers Paul Pritchard and Rob John have rejoined us, alongside new members John Derrek, Ashley Ellison and Alun Smith. It’s fantastic to see the choir continuing to grow. Our Autumn Concert takes place on Saturday, October 17th, at Cornelly Community Centre, with special guest baritone soloist Josef Gray. We look forward to welcoming you! Paul Butterworth Chairman, KHDMVC

Our summer programme started with a Charity Concert. The whole concert engendered huge joy. In addition to the choir items there were beautifully performed items by: the Risings Stars; a solo by Salome; Carolyn on saxophone; and a medley by Catherine and Angharad on flute and harp. Each item received rapturous applause. Also, an hilarious item when two cats invaded the stage, attacking each other with “Miaows” until final reconciliation! The appreciative audience raised £780 for Noah’s Ark. Also, in May the Chorus was privileged to perform and lead community singing for the residents of the Masonic Care Home and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Then, on a wild and wet afternoon in June, a small group of the Chorus performed in the open on a temporary stage as part of the Newton School Fair. Intrepid! As the new term begins, we invite all who love singing (and those who think they can’t sing) to join us. No auditions and no commitment to sing in concerts! Whether an experienced singer or a complete beginner, if you love music, you will be warmly welcomed by our caring community. (Enquiries: details in Tuesday’s ‘What’s On’).

The 63B bus service runs from Porthcawl to Bridgend, via Kenfig and North Cornelly. This service was discontinued ten years ago, but in response to public pressure, was reinstated this year. This means that, at least on weekdays, people from Porthcawl, Bridgend or North Cornelly can visit the Nature Reserve by bus. The service runs hourly on weekdays, but finishes in the early afternoon. A group of 14 walkers from the Porthcawl U3A walking group recently boarded the bus to Kenfig, and returned on foot, walking through the Reserve towards Sker House and then along the Wales Coast Path back to Porthcawl, led by Kenfig Trustee Greg Nuttgens. For some, this was the first introduction to Kenfig, and it is hoped that they will continue to visit the Reserve. It is hoped that the Bus Walk will be repeated next spring. Kenfig Trust grants Every year, Kenfig Nature Trust gives donations to local charitable and voluntary organisations based in the Kenfig and Cornelly area. The next round of applications will be considered in November, and applications should be received by the end of October. Newton WI made a lively return after the summer break, with our first full meeting filled with friendship, excitement and plans for the months ahead. Trips, shared meals, buffets and Christmas celebrations have already been arranged, taking us right through to the New Year. The highlight of the evening was our guest speaker, Bex Rowe, who shared the remarkable story of her expedition to the South Pole with her friend George. Both women are firefighters and undertook the challenge to test themselves in one of the world’s harshest environments, while also challenging gender stereotypes and demonstrating what women can achieve through courage, determination and teamwork. Bex gave us a fascinating insight into the rigorous physical and mental preparation required for their Antarctic adventure. She described the exhausting demands of the journey, the extreme sub-zero temperatures and the psychological challenges of spending long periods in such a remote and unforgiving landscape. We would like to thank Bex for sharing her story with us so openly and bringing such enthusiasm and inspiration to our meeting. Pam Powis

FRIENDS OF MONZE (FOM) ZAMBIA Schools in Monze are encouraged to be entrepreneurial to raise funds for small essential items for education like pencils, chalk and note pads. Most of the schools FOM has funded (now 22 classroom blocks) have gardens that are productive, growing nutritious food for the children to eat at school and extra to sell to teachers and parents. Other fundraising schemes include beekeeping, making honey and wax, soap making, making peanut butter, fishponds to breed and provide fish for food, chicken keeping for eggs and chickens. Schools have different projects so produce can be sold in the locality. These projects also give children skills in not only maintaining the project but also the business side of producing and selling at a profit to expand the scheme. FOM are trying to encourage craft making and art which is seen extensively in tourist hotspots such as Victoria falls. Beautifully carved and varnished wooden wild animals, items made from strips of drink cans, bead and wire animals, insects and flowers, bright and colourful paintings and clothes made from traditional chi tenge material items are all familiar sights in the craft stalls. SKER WI Our first meeting after the summer break on the 10th of September was well attended despite the weather. The speaker, Angela Powell, gave a very interesting talk on her career as a professional skin care therapist. After training at Pontypridd college, she went on to work in several top spa resorts such as Champneys and Grayshott Spa. Unfortunately, after long term use of products, she developed dermatitis in her hands and therefore did a lot of research to find a suitable product which suited her. She found the company which she now uses, Dermaolgica, and set up her own business using their products. Eventually she closed her own business to go into the education and training of skin care therapists in Swansea College. In 2005 she left the college and set up her own business, The Skin Re-Treat in Aberavon. Here she offers personal care plans following a consultation and skin assessment. She emphasised that your skin care routine needs to be done consistently both morning and evening and said that exfoliation and good hydration are important. Our next meeting will be on 8th of October, and we always have a warm welcome for visitors looking to join the WI.

FEATURES CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PORTHCAWL

Working in partnership across churches means more than just sharing resources. We’re learning from each other, and from you; discerning how to serve the wider community. Monthly prayer walks are a precious moment of witness – coming together to share perspectives and hold all that concerns us about the current world in prayer before God. We meet at midday on the second Saturday of the month (next one: 10th October) at Trinity and take a gentle, 30-minute walk around the centre, pausing for prayer at specific points. Do join us! Our next beach clean is on Thursday 8th October: meet at 11am at the new Sussed shop: 3 Well Street, CF36 3BE. Keep an eye on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ porthcawlchurches/) for any weather-related updates. At the time of writing, we’re preparing for a special event on the theme of peace. Specifically, how can the Welsh Women’s Peace Petition of 1923/4 (pictured) inspire us to act for peace today? If you or your organisation would like to be part of a local workgroup developing initiatives for a more peaceful society, please get in touch: markworrall90@gmail.com. Pob bendith, David Robinson

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Does your local church still celebrate Harvest Festival? As a society we have moved further away from the means of food production and forget the hard work involved in providing food to eat. Many of our modern meals in our fast-paced lifestyle are simply reheated in a microwave or bought from a 'fast food' shop. Our supermarkets are well stocked, and we can have almost any food we want. It was not this way in previous generations; there was food rationing in the 1940's and 50's. Hunger strikes in the 1930's and famine and starvation in many countries today. Do we need to be less complacent and more thankful? Perhaps we should remember that pandemics, natural disasters or human conflicts can quickly change our situation! It is with an attitude of gratitude that many churches still celebrate Harvest Festivals, often collecting food for local foodbanks or money for disaster relief charities. Why not check out what your local church does for Harvest? And remember also this deeper truth: that Jesus Christ is food for the soul. He said 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (The Bible) Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl

FOUR BIRTHDAY’S AT PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB Does anyone recognise the Chairman Mr Keith Duggan in the photo shot? Well, how many people celebrate their birthdays as Pirates! The committee members laid on a spread, and the members presented Keith with some money to thank him for keeping the Stroke Club running for 28 years; all of which have been on a voluntary basis. Mary got a large cake, as we were celebrating four birthdays. Kieth, Gary, Hazel and Geraint. Once again, our Secretary Susan Ward not only designed a pirate boat out of a cardboard box, a treasure table, treasure maps, tablecloth cups and bunting, and stated, “I enjoyed the prep had fun setting the scene making group memories”. Sue did a fantastic job who even entertained us with games! The members had fun dressing up, and the outfits said it all, it was wonderful to see Rob, one of our members, who had just recently come out of hospital, after being through a really hard time, enjoying his day. He not only dressed up, but on the front of his scooter basket, had a box of treasure and some sea creature; just brilliant! Barbara Matthews

TALBOT COMMUNITY CENTRE The Coffee Morning ladies have been partying again; one of our senior ladies turned 90 years of age a couple of weeks ago. So, true to fashion, twenty ‘young’ ladies went off on a jolly to celebrate Jean’s 90th birthday. Three of our four nonagenarians were present at the party – and a good time was had by all. Stephen Kinnock MP for Aberavon Maesteg (including Kenfig Hill and Pyle), and recently appointed Secretary of State for Wales, visited the Talbot on a Friday Hub morning. Stephen, Cllrs Jane Gebbie, Huw David, Gary Chappell and Talbot Trustees had their photograph taken as he presented a plaque to the Trustees on behalf of Pride in Place Impact Fund. The funding will allow the Talbot to provide video conferencing facilities, and new front doors to the building. Just a reminder – we are now into October, the second half of the Talbot financial year. We have opened the membership book for anyone who wants to become a member for half of the annual subscription - £6.00. Your support from now until the end of March 2027 will be very welcome. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD NEWS

BRIDGEND DISTRICT RBL POPPY APPEAL

To recap, we enjoyed a return visit from a popular lady and who is very much in demand by many organisations in our area. It was of course the delightful Debra John and as always Debra never failed to give us a thought-provoking lecture. We in turn, individually created pictures relating to her story in our mind. Each member using their imagination and interpretation of the monologue. This is unique as it creates a different perspective but was no less enjoyable to all her audience. Our speaker for October will be Lynda Bryant. Even though the clocks will change later this month, there is nothing scary or spooky about our visiting speaker’s lecture. We will be forging ahead towards the festive season with Lynda giving us a talk on a Medieval Christmas. We are aware however that this subject matter could possibly be frightening for some. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the Grove Golf Club at 2.00pm, if you are curious about our organisation and want to satisfy that curiosity then do come along. Finally, our members would like to wish everybody a spooky but happy Halloween! Pat Ladlow

Last year the poppy appeal in Bridgend district raised over £78K with the support of the volunteers and residents of Bridgend, Porthcawl, Garw Valley and surrounding areas. Last year we were supported by local youth groups, WI’s and companies who staff took volunteer days. This year Bridgend District poppy appeal is from the 22nd of October till the 7th of November 2026. We are currently looking for volunteers to assist with collection points in the following areas Porthcawl, Pyle, Bridgend. If you are a group or an individual and wish to find out more, please contact Kevin Gould on: bridgenddistrictpoppyappeal@gmail.com or register through the RBL website (volunteer). If you wish to source a remembrance wreath for the act of remembrance, I do have some available the only issue I will not be able to supply branded centres unless they are on the RBL data base and I need 3 weeks’ notice to order them, wreaths can be purchased from Tim Woods Butchers in the Rhiw or from the collectors in Sainsbury Monday to Friday between the 22nd of October and the 7th of November. In Porthcawl ordered wreaths can be picked up from the YMCA in John st as normal (dates to be confirmed).

Deadline date for the November issue is: THURSDAY 15TH OCTOBER

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI During August our WI members undertook their annual summer bus trip. This year we chose Abergavenny and then onto Brecon. The weather was perfect and the indoor and outdoor market in Abergavenny met everyone’s expectations. Members also visited the castle and the priory with lots of coffee and lunch stops. At Brecon members visited the cathedral, the canal basin and wandered around the town centre with its individual shops. Both stops were enjoyed by all with thanks given to our organiser for the smoothness of the outing. The speaker in our September meeting was Michila Harris from the ‘Wig shop’ in Porthcawl. She explained how the various hair pieces were constructed and the different types of pieces available to suit individual customers’ needs. The talk was received with great enthusiasm and member participation. Hair pieces are worn for lots of reasons, and she showed how they can change your appearance and give you more confidence. Our thanks go to Michila for her excellent demonstration and demystifying the image of wig wearing. We welcomed a few more new members to our meeting and hope to see all old and new members in our October meeting Tuesday 13th at 2pm. Katherine Hier, President

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL

After a warm and sunny summer, we are delighted to be back at PPS and looking forward to an action-packed year ahead. Over the past year, we have been working towards becoming a Forest School. Forest School develops confidence, resilience and self-esteem through learner-led, hands-on experiences in a natural environment. We are currently creating a fire pit area and an outdoor learning space, which all pupils will benefit from during lessons and extracurricular activities. We are incredibly excited to get started and make the most of our wonderful school grounds. This year will also see the return of our successful PPS Art Gallery Event at Porthcawl Museum. We are proud supporters of Porthcawl Museum and thoroughly enjoyed working with them on this project last year. Our pupils have already begun researching their chosen artists and will soon be creating their own masterpieces. The finished artwork will be displayed at Porthcawl Museum, before pupils can take their creations home. Our Art Gallery Event will take place on Tuesday 23rd November from 3.00pm to 6.00pm. We look forward to welcoming families and the Porthcawl community to celebrate the creativity and talent of our pupils. Moving schools and changing the language of learning is a significant step; therefore, the programme is tailored to individual learners’ needs. Mrs Bethan Morgan has been appointed as the Leader of Pont Iaith, and the late immersion provision will continue from September 2026, based at Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr. Existing learners are continuing their journey to bilingualism at the provision and new starters have also registered and secured their place. However, there is still space for more learners to start their Welsh-medium education journey. For further information: 01656 754865 or pont.iaith@bridgend.gov.uk

RISING STARS MUSIC AND DRAMA GROUP

NOTTAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL — AUTUMN TERM

What became very evident in the summer term, was not only the progress of all the children in music and drama skills, but also the huge increase in confidence of all the members of the group. Those who had been reticent were keen to sing solos, so the Charity Concert in May became evidence of this. They sang and moved with joy, with individual children introducing the songs. After the concert, many members of the audience were keen to say how much they had thoroughly enjoyed the children’s contributions. To say that the team were proud of them is an understatement: and of course, the parents were delighted. They also performed at the Masonic Care Home in May and Newton School Fair in June, learning to adapt to different venues and circumstances with ease. The reasons parents give for continuing to send their children to this group include: the fun and friendship; increased confidence in singing, drama, music skills and movement; and the chance to perform without pressure. To secure a place for your child (aged between 8 to 11) please contact Maggie Jemmett. (See details in Tuesday’s What’s On section)

A warm welcome back to all our families after a glorious summer. It has been a joy to see our pupils return refreshed and ready to learn, and we extend a particularly warm welcome to our new starters and their families beginning their journey with us this term. Our concept this term is sustainability and the environment. We are delighted to be working alongside Gemma from the Pantri Box to help inform families and the wider community about the practical steps we can all take towards a more sustainable future. Small changes, made together, add up to real impact. Our Year 6 pupils will lead the way, driving new and exciting initiatives across the school that link directly to authentic, purposeful learning. We can't wait to see the ideas they bring forward and the difference they make. We also begin the term with a renewed focus on reading. Developing a genuine love of reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children, and families play an essential part in that. Our eager 'Reading Rebels' are thrilled to continue to listen to all children across the school daily, promoting the authentic love of reading. Here's to a wonderful autumn term.

MAGIC CARPETS & MUSICAL SUCCESS AT NEWTON PRIMARY As we begin another exciting year at Bryntirion Comprehensive School, we have much to celebrate. Our pupils achieved an excellent set of GCSE, AS and A Level results this summer, reflecting their hard work, resilience and determination, supported by dedicated staff and the encouragement of parents and carers. We are also proud to celebrate the opening of our new 3G pitch, a significant investment in the future of our school and local community. The facility will provide high-quality sporting opportunities throughout the year, helping pupils develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership while supporting their physical and mental wellbeing. The successful implementation of our new mobile device policy has highlighted the strength of the partnership between pupils, staff and parents/carers, helping to create an even more positive, safe and focused learning environment. We are especially proud of how quickly our new Year 7 pupils have settled into school life and embraced the spirit and values of Tîm Bryntirion. Their positive attitude, excellent behaviour and enthusiasm for learning have made a wonderful impression. As a reward for their efforts, this week they were treated to a live orchestra performance from members of the Bridgend Music Service, which they thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. 40 | seaside news

What an exciting start we have had at Newton Primary School! News arrived that an old, mysterious chest had been washed up on the beach. Filled with curiosity and excitement, pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 headed down to investigate. The children explored the beach before discovering the mysterious chest. When it was finally opened, everyone was amazed to find a magical carpet hidden inside! Where has it travelled from? What adventures has it experienced? Most importantly, where might it take us next? The children are looking forward to using their imaginations and uncovering the secrets behind this fascinating discovery. The excitement continued with more wonderful news: our Newton Singer Songwriters group has reached the School Song UK Songwriting Final 2026 with its original song, ‘Be Yourself’! This is an incredible achievement and marks the third consecutive year that our talented pupils have reached the final. It is a fantastic testament to their creativity, dedication, teamwork and hard work. We are extremely proud of everyone involved and cannot wait to begin preparations for the final. With a magical carpet to inspire us and a final to look forward to, exciting adventures certainly await Newton Primary School! Join Newton Primary School as a community governor and help shape our future. Apply by contacting admin@ newtonps.bridgend.cymru for further information.

HISTORY OCTOBER 1964 - THE TOKYO OLYMPICS The Tokyo Summer Olympics ran from the10th to 24th October 1964. These Games were the first Olympics held in Asia and the first to be broadcast internationally without the need for tapes to be flown overseas. Notable “lasts” included the last time a cinder running track was used for athletics events, and the last use of hand-held stopwatches for official timing. From a Welsh perspective the Games were notable for Lynn Davies’ long jump gold medal. Born in Nantymoel and a pupil at Ogmore County Grammar School, Lynn Davies joined Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club where he excelled at the long jump and sprints. Lynn Davies’ gold medal at Tokyo, the first long jump gold medal for a Briton, was achieved with a jump of 8.07 metres (26 ft 6 in). Subsequently, he was known as “Lynn the Leap”. His other major long jump achievements included winning the 1966 European Championship, the 1966 and 1970 Commonwealth Games titles (becoming the first man to win that title twice), and five British titles between 1964 and 1969, missing out only in 1965. Lynn Davies credited his Tokyo victory to the rainy, cold conditions in Japan, which he felt favoured his performance because he was used to such weather at home in Wales. MABSANT

9th September 2026 witnessed the reintroduction of Mabsant at St John’s Church, Newton which was last celebrated in 1896. Originally a Medieval religious festival it was held on that date to celebrate the day upon which the church was dedicated to its patron saint. However, it gradually developed into a week-long community celebration involving games, dancing, feasting and drinking shorn of religious significance leading to its demise. 44 | seaside news

In the late Victorian period, the second Saturday in September was chosen due to work commitments. Three friendly societies regaled in their individual distinctive sashes took part in the event. The Foresters (green sash) emerged from their clubroom at the Assembly Rooms (Station Hill) and the Oddfellows (blue sash) from the Albion Inn (boxing club). They marched through the streets of Porthcawl and Nottage led by a brass band to Newton to join the Ancient Britons (red sash), from the Jolly Sailor, whose members also carried ornamental billhooks mounted on a stick. (items on display in Porthcawl Museum) They all entered St John’s Church for the service and then returned to their clubs to enjoy their respective feasts. The town celebrated too. ‘No work at the harvest or the docks.’ Bunting was displayed everywhere and the above activities enjoyed all week. (see photo) Its revival as an annual religious ceremony now seems assured. Ceri Joseph

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM DINO DAY On the day visitors were able to join in several Dinosaur related events and activities and once more the fascination around dinosaurs remains in children of all ages. These activities included Dino themed crafts and making your own Dino, Dino digs, where children could excavate buried dinosaurs & fossils and Dino searches and creative activities. One of the most popular attractions was the opportunity to handle some of the archaeological artefacts held in the museum’s collection which attracted both children and adults, with the Woolly Mammoth tooth being the most popular. Such is the interest in the subject of archaeology the museum is pleased to announce the formation of the Porthcawl Museum Young Archaeologist Club. The club is open to everyone aged 8 to 12 years. Members will get involved in all sorts of activities, such as handling artefacts and conservation, visiting and investigating archaeological sites and historic places, trying out traditional crafts, such as Bronze Age clay food vessel, replica coracle making and taking part in excavations. The club is based at Porthcawl Museum in John Street, Porthcawl and usually meets on the first Saturday of each month from 10-12 midday. The club is run by museum staff and volunteers, and occasional guest experts. For further information email: lyndianajones@hotmail.com David Swidenbank Porthcawl Museum

HEALTH & WELLBEING COST OF CANCER

GOOD MORNING?

We are looking at taking part in a coffee morning and wondered if this would interest anyone? If you would like to do your own coffee morning and would like to take part, please do email us on info@costofcancer.org.uk. Tickets are still available for our 10th anniversary charity ball in October. We are looking for raffle prizes and auction prizes so if anyone has something they can donate, we would appreciate it. We also need volunteers for the night so if you are free on the night of the 24th October down in The Bear in Cowbridge we would appreciate it. We would love to increase our socials pages because it helps massively when we are doing any events. So, please do like, follow and share that would be really helpful. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees Cost of Cancer

So, what is your idea of a good morning? Do you wake up slowly? The sun is shining the birds singing the smell of fresh coffee, kettle boiling your favourite breakfast prepared and the music you enjoy is playing in the background. Your room is the perfect temperature You’re ready to get out of bed slowly and at your own pace, deciding whether to have a shower before breakfast and then slowly planning your day and allowing it to unfold? Or is it the sound of the alarm going off too late for the snooze button? Children and pets are crying in the background somebody’s calling you where’s my,,,? The kettle is empty there’s no coffee or tea or milk and it’s raining. You can’t find your shoes. You’ve stepped in something as you walk into the kitchen. The news is playing loudly in the background – guns, fear, terror. Somewhere between the two is the day you have compared to the day you would like and some of it you can improve with just a little planning and other things you cannot alter yet. Acceptance of what is means you can choose each morning to treat waking as a joy or as a difficulty. You choose. Be gentle on yourself. Margaret Brown

FINANCE NO MORE SLEEPING IN CORRIDORS! I found myself sleeping in a hospital corridor last month amongst the mele of sick patients’ irate relatives and overworked nursing staff. For someone who thinks he’s in control of his life this was far from it and a very humbling experience I can tell you, I wasn’t even a patient or an undercover journalist, just keeping my wife company whilst the endless queue receded. Here’s the thing that got me thinking as I slipped off my plastic chair…if we have an accident everything is dealt with exclusively by the NHS, fragmented as it may be with nonexistent joined up thinking, we have to accept it and we are lucky it’s there. But if you want to take control of your general health you can do this without the angst, frustration, confrontation, endless lists and waiting. You can buy what is commonly called Private Medical Insurance (PMI). It won’t replace A and E, but it will cover a myriad of other things. As financial advisers we are forever banging the drum about making sure clients have insured their wealth but all too often we forget to insure their health. It’s all well and good showing you how to be clever with your finances but what good is that if you must pay £12,000 for a hip replacement ,or £17,000 for a knee operation and up to £19,000 for a shoulder replacement. Yes, the good old NHS can do this for nothing but how long do

48 | seaside news

you have to wait and how many appointments before you get there? The single most common reason people choose PMI for surgery or advice in the UK is the speed of treatment. It’s not just the cost it’s the waiting but PMI can cover you for much more such as immediate treatment for a list of ailments which you don’t have yet! Private medical insurance may help you access private consultations for diagnostic tests subject to policy terms and approval. It can give you reassurance when you need it most while helping to protect your savings and investments from unexpected healthcare costs. As a totally independent Chartered firm we can research the market for the most suitable options. We compare the cover, exclusions, excesses, underwriting and premiums, then explain the differences so you can decide what’s right for you. As the winter months approach and the NHS comes under more strain why not find out if Private Medical Insurance is affordable for you. There are no set up costs so there is no charge to explore if PMI is suitable for you. No more sleeping in corridors for me, I hope! A GROWING TREND - EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP TRUST Tucked into the growing conversation around sustainable business succession is a model gaining real traction across the UK: the Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). For many coastal and family-run businesses, where legacy and community matter as much as profit, transitioning to employee ownership offers a compelling way to secure both. While the concept is appealing, the process can be complex. Tungsten Corporate Solutions supports businesses through the practical and regulatory steps involved in establishing an EOT. From initial feasibility assessments through to implementation, their role is to ensure the transition is compliant with HMRC requirements and aligned with long-term business goals. A key challenge is balancing financial efficiency with fairness. Owners want to realise value, while employees need a structure that genuinely benefits them. Tungsten works with all parties to design a trust model that achieves both. For seaside businesses rooted in their communities, an EOT can preserve independence, protect jobs, and keep decisionmaking local. With experienced guidance, the transition becomes a clear pathway to a more resilient and inclusive future. Darren Talbot Tungsten Corporate Solutions 01656 783420

LEGAL SECURING YOUR LEGACY WITH A LIFETIME TRUST Navigating the uncertainties of life can be challenging both for you and your loved ones, but securing the future of your loved ones need not be. With a Lifetime Trust you can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that your assets have been safeguarded and will benefit your chosen loved ones exactly as you intend. Many still believe that Lifetime Trusts are only for the wealthy, but this is no longer the case with ordinary folk now owning their homes and looking to protect their assets. Westminster Law has made Lifetime Trusts an affordable and practical solution and has made it possible for anyone to secure their family’s future with the same protection and foresight that the wealthy have enjoyed for centuries. Why choose a Lifetime Trust? • Avoid the cost and delays of probate: Grant immediate access on your death to some or all of your assets held in trust without the need for probate. • Control and protection: Claim full control over your assets and shield your family’s inheritance from divorce, creditors, and other predatory challenges. • Ensure future care of your beneficiaries: Guarantee that the trust capital can assist your loved ones for generations; for example, for education, health care, and first homes. • Retain more of your wealth: Strategically reduce or even eliminate potential inheritance tax liabilities for yourself and future generations.

Many believe setting up a trust means losing control; however, the reality is quite the opposite. With the right planning, a Lifetime Trust allows you to maintain full control over your assets both during your lifetime and after death. A Lifetime Trust ensures that your wishes regarding your assets are meticulously realised with precision and care. By setting up a Lifetime Trust you can preserve your legacy, ensuring your intentions are fulfilled not just for the present, but also for future generations. Westminster Law assesses the circumstances of couples and individuals and arranges the Trust that will provide the best protection for them, their loved ones and their assets. IS IT IMPORTANT TO GET LEGAL ADVICE WHEN YOU SPLIT FROM YOUR PARTNER? People are often concerned at the cost of getting a solicitor involved in their case and think that by doing so they will complicate matters. It is important to take legal advice at an early stage after you separate from your partner. Despite what some people think, a good family lawyer will not try to turn an amicable split into an acrimonious one. Being well informed of your rights, responsibilities and the likely outcomes gives you the best information to help keep things from turning sour. It is best to take advice before entering into negotiations with your ex-partner. You may find you agree something that you’re happy with at the time, but if circumstances change you might not feel as happy later. A lawyer will help you consider the implications of different scenarios and may also suggest options you haven’t thought of, for example trying to resolve your difficulties via mediation. Lawyers do not just help couples who are unable to reach an agreement. Sometimes clients have already agreed on the way forward, and they simply want lawyers to formalise that agreement or assist them with making an application for a clean break order – a binding order preventing either party from coming back for more money later on.

With you every step of the way Our services include: Wills & Probate · Conveyancing Family · Corporate and Commercial

Contact our Porthcawl Office

Visit our website www.redkitesolicitors.co.uk

It is important to remember that simply reaching an agreement about what will happen does not mean that you are protected in the future from a claim if your ex-partner changes their mind. However, if a lawyer draws up this agreement, you will have the best possible protection against a future claim. If the above is relevant to you, please contact one of our experts at Red Kite Law who will be happy to advise further.

GARDEN & NATURE PORTHCAWL FLOWER ARRANGING SOCIETY Following a successful enrolment afternoon in September, we are now looking forward to our meetings in October. On Wednesday 14th October, we are delighted to be welcoming the very talented flower arranger Katherine Lee who will be wowing us with her creative arrangements entitled " For the love of Flowers". As always everyone is welcome to join us on what will be a very informative and eye-catching demonstration. On Wednesday 28th October we are having our first practice session of the new season, which will be a basket arrangement incorporating The Richness of Autumn. We meet at Awl-y-mor centre in Porthcawl CF36 5TN between 1.30-4pm. Contact Claire on 07814519985 for further information.

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Bittersweet October – the mellow, messy, leaf kicking perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter! (Carol Bishop) The October garden is slowing down, but you can prolong late blooming flowers like Asters and Japanese anemones. These will look good right through until November if you snip off fading flowers and water if (big if!) we get a dry spell. As your garden dies back, a good trick is to fill in flower beds with ornamental grass, which is at peak perfection in autumn. Try Stipa and Festuca – they form natural drifts and are beautiful for seasonal interest in the cooler months. Keep your veg patch going by planting garlic, onions, broad beans and peas, planting now will make use of bare soil helping prevent soil erosion and hold nutrients in the as well as giving you earlier crops. Plant some winter lettuce too. Did you know – Ceaser Augustus erected a statue in honour of lettuce as he considered it cured him of his illness. Americans have a love affair with lettuce consuming 25.8 pounds per head annually! Lettuce is 95% water but full of potassium, calcium and magnesium. All hail the humble lettuce (my tortoise loves it!) Chris Early 52 | seaside news

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

October is a month of seasonal transition, with cooler nights and shorter days signalling the start of autumn’s tidyup. It’s a rewarding time to prepare the garden for winter while still enjoying late colour. Clear away spent annuals and cut back perennials that have finished flowering but leave seed heads on plants like echinacea for wildlife. Lift tender plants such as dahlias and cannas once frost blackens their foliage, storing them somewhere dry and frostfree. October is ideal for planting spring bulbs including daffodils, tulips and alliums. Plant trees and shrubs now too, while soil is still warm enough for root growth. Rake leaves off lawns and paths, adding them to a leaf mould pile for next year’s compost. Keep mowing if the grass is growing but raise the blade. Mulch borders to protect roots and conserve moisture. In the veg patch, harvest remaining crops and sow hardy broad beans for an early Spring crop. Check for slugs after wet spells. October’s steady jobs set the garden up beautifully for winter and ensure a strong start next spring. RSPB recommend holding off on seed until the end of October for birds, ensure feeders are kept clean. Mealworm feeding is fine as are fat balls. We will be holding our Curry night for members this month see Facebook for details. Our first garden lecture of the new season is on Monday, 12th October 7.30pm when Kevin Thomas will demonstrate Winter hanging baskets. We are very proud of our renovations to Cliff Cottage which is looking beautiful and a real asset to the village. Sue Ford

SEA & SPORT FISHNET ZERO WITH BDMLR

It's that time of the year when the seal pups are being born along our shores. So, we must be extra vigilant on our walks along the beach during this time of the year. Seal mums are canny about where they have their pups but don’t always realise how us humans like to explore, so they are generally well away from their natural predators… but not us! If you see a white coat pup it’s only a couple of days old and still suckling, so once spotted please move at least 50 feet downwind of them to keep out of their range – but more importantly to keep out of sight and smell of their mum. She’s very probably out at sea feeding and building up her strength, to return to her pup within a couple of hours of leaving them there. Seal pups must feed from their mum every 4 hours, so she is never far away… and very observant and nervous. However sometimes mum just can’t get back so that’s why whenever we see a white coat, please phone the British Divers Marine Life Medics on 01825 765546. We will have a medic observe the pup for as long as it takes to establish if they’re just chilling or they need medical attention. We’ll watch until we either see mum, or if more than 8 hours have elapsed, we’ll then check them out, hydrate or lift them to take to a specialist vet or a rescue centre. Seals are protected under the Wildlife Act 1981, and we have the only licence in the UK to move seals off the beach, and then only on a case-by-case basis so please give them a lot of space. If you have the time once the medics have been called, please keep others away from the area until we arrive. Seals look cute but have a ferocious bite and carry zoonotic diseases so keep everyone away, particularly dogs off leads. For context, we lifted this poorly seal pup from Rest Bay last September. She had been savaged by a dog. The wounds weren’t fresh, so she had been on the beach injured for a couple of days after the attack and was clearly in a lot of pain when we lifted her. Her injuries were so severe that even if she’d recovered, she would never have been able to fend for herself. If the dogs’ owners had called us after the attack, a vet could have relieved such obvious suffering days sooner. If you’d like to donate to BDMLR visit BDMLR.org.uk. To join FNZ on any of our beach cleans, or contact us to retrieve a net, check our FishNetZero FB and insta pages. BBC’S SAVING LIVES AT SEA

Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew feature in the latest series of BBC Saving Lives at Sea, which is currently airing on BBC2 with episodes also available on BBC iPlayer. Now in its 11th series it showcases the courage of RNLI lifesavers throughout the UK and Ireland as they respond to emergencies around the coast. Porthcawl’s RNLI crew featured in the first episode of the series (available now on iPlayer). They feature next on September 30th when the crew launched into very rough seas following multiple 999 calls for a person in the water and feature in other episodes towards the end of the series too. Porthcawl RNLI volunteer helm and lifeboat press officer Chris Page said, ‘Saving Lives at Sea features real life rescue footage giving an insight into the lifesaving nature of our work, as well as showing the challenging conditions our volunteer crews sometimes face. We are delighted to feature again in such a long-running and popular series alongside our fellow lifesavers from across the RNLI.’ More than 30 different RNLI lifeboat stations appear in the series, as well as some of the charity’s beach lifeguards. In 2025, Porthcawl RNLI’s lifeboat crew launched 113 times, aided 146 people and saved 15 lives. Chris Page Image Credit: Stephen Jones / Porthcawl RNLI

CLUB SANDY I am proposing to set up a not-for-profit play / sports club on Sandy Bay beach. The beach has huge potential and a small venue that hosts outdoor transportable play equipment would be a welcomed resource to residents, local schools and visitors. Think volleyball, sand tennis, golf, beach archery, circus skills, spike ball, gymnastics, kite flying, games for small kids and adults etc. Join the club and use the facility to access the equipment - anytime. Use it as much as you like. In addition, I am also thinking about hosting days of activities - volleyball day, beach Olympics etc. I don’t want to turn this into some business enterprise – when we go to the beach, we must protect that sense of freedom and 'ah moment'. That’s the ethos. At the present time, I am looking to join with a small group of people who use Sandy Bay currently and would like to work together to achieve something. Please get in touch with me, if you could spare some time and energy into a new project. Neville Evans evansneville76@gmail.com Or call 07578 694916

SEA & SPORT PORTHCAWL AND THE MUMBLES RNLI RESCUE LONE SAILOR FROM SINKING YACHT

Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew launched on Friday 28 August to a yacht with a lone sailor onboard who had made a 999 call after running aground on a sand bank and swamping the engine. The Mumbles RNLI all-weather lifeboat was also requested. The charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose of the Shires launched at 3.10pm into strong force 5-6 south westerly winds and moderate sea conditions and made best speed towards Scarweather Sands with the crew understanding that to be the most likely location of the casualty.

unable to immediately spot the casualty or locate them using radar due to the conditions. The sailor was requested to fire a red flare, after which the lifeboat crew spotted the vessel. On scene, the crew assessed the situation and observed that the yacht had taken on a significant amount of water. A crew member was put onboard the yacht to further assess the situation. It was immediately apparent that the crew needed to get the sailor off as quickly as possible as it would be impossible to stem the flow of water. Speaking following the call out, Andrew Walmsley, Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said: ‘The crew did a great job in difficult conditions. Time was of the essence and to locate the sailor quickly with fairly limited information and evacuate them from the sinking yacht resulted in a life saved and we want to wish the casualty well. 'The Bristol Channel has the second largest tidal range in the world and can present people with challenging conditions where it can be easy to get caught out. We would like to commend the casualty for being prepared and having a means to call for help. ‘Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.’

The lifeboat passaged out in fairly challenging conditions and as they got closer to Scarweather sand bank, the crew were

YOU CANNOT GROW IF YOU ARE NOT SEEN Most businesses are not struggling because they are not good. They are struggling because they are not seen often enough. If people see you once, they notice you. If they see you regularly, they remember you. If they remember you, they choose you. Visibility is not about being everywhere. It is about being consistent where your customers already look.
