LETTERS REGENERATION Dear Editor, In my letter published in the June copy of Seaside News, I referred to the town meeting organised by the Porthcawl Town Council ion 15 December to discuss BCBC’s plans for the regeneration of Porthcawl. At the meeting, a resolution was passed which required PTC to write to the Welsh Government seeking its support to substantially reduce the number of proposed residential units planned by BCBC. Despite reminders sent to PTC, it took no action and the reminders were ignored.

However, a response was eventually received on 27 May which states that a Council can only make a resolution at their Ordinary Council meetings. It goes on to say that the meeting held on 15 December ‘was a public meeting and not a council meeting and, as such, no resolution of Porthcawl Town Council could be made during this meeting.’

As this reply is confusing, PTC has been asked for clarification.

As things stand, PTC seems to be saying that it can ignore the resolution passed by residents on 15 December even though the meeting was called by PTC to give residents the opportunity to express their views. PTC’s reply also seems to suggest that it can only respond to a resolution if it is debated and passed by town councillors at a council meeting!

Residents, it seems, can play no part in the process.

PROPERTY MAJOR HOME BUYING AND SELLING SHAKE-UP: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The Government has announced a series of major reforms aimed at making the home buying and selling process in England and Wales faster, more transparent and less stressful.

As industry professionals, we welcome these proposals, which are designed to reduce delays, cut costs and improve confidence for buyers and sellers alike.

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of mandatory sales packs. These will provide key information about a property at the point it is listed, including its condition, leasehold costs and chain status. By giving buyers access to vital information from the outset, the Government hopes to reduce unexpected issues that often emerge later in the transaction process.

The move brings England and Wales closer to the Scottish system, where upfront property information has helped reduce failed transactions and speed up completions. We believe this is a positive step that will help buyers make more informed decisions and keep transactions moving.

The reforms also propose the introduction of binding agreements between buyers and sellers earlier in the process.

Currently, property sales can fall through at any stage before contracts are exchanged, causing frustration, delays and financial loss. While full details are yet to be confirmed, the Government believes these agreements could significantly reduce the number of failed transactions by discouraging parties from withdrawing without a legitimate reason.

Another key element of the reforms is a new Code of Practice

for estate agents, alongside proposals for mandatory qualifications across the sector. We fully support measures that raise standards, improve consumer confidence and ensure buyers and sellers receive the expert guidance they deserve.

Alongside these changes, the Government is driving a major shift towards digitalisation. Future improvements are expected to include digital property logbooks, electronic signatures, digital identity checks and AI-assisted conveyancing.

These innovations should reduce paperwork, improve communication and help transactions progress more efficiently.

The Government estimates that first-time buyers could save an average of £650, while the overall home buying process could be shortened by up to four weeks.

The first phase of the reforms, including the new Code of Practice and improved property listing guidance, is expected later this year. Further consultations on qualifications and digital tools will follow from 2027, with legislation for sales packs and binding agreements planned before the end of the current Parliament.

In the middle of the night When all the world is sleeping I sometimes find myself surprisingly awake And sitting downstairs in the dark With a cup of tea trying not to make a noise

The tall red brick chimney's pot pokes at a threatening sky, as the regular family of crows prepare to nest there by and by.

They've not chosen this at random there are chimneys wherever they look but this one's safer, less accessible to a scavenger, seagull or rook.

My senses are heightened, but there is nothing As the coolness of the night acts as a cold compress And with my eyes closed, I feel I am healing As my mind cools down and resets No phone, TV or traffic No one It is silent, save for the quiet tick of a clock And the whisper of the wind outside I have never been afraid of the dark And neither should you Since it is a good friend to have around And can be found on most quiet evenings A soothing and non-judgemental companion Providing comfort to those that are comfortable with themselves Either by holding hands or in a calming embrace Once the coolness turns to chill and the tea is cold It is time for me to bid her farewell and return to bed And once the warmth returns to my bones Falling asleep is effortless And in an instant, I am welcomed by the light That revels in revealing everything that we are In the chaotic kaleidoscope we call life Mark Griffiths, Margam Village

Crow parents 'man' the chimney their offspring have spread their wings. trusting that they will fare well coping with what bird life brings.

Once next spring again comes calling birds adhere to nature's demands, crows again will nest in that chimney pot, their future is indelibly planned.

NEWS PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL – MAYORS MESSAGE

It is a privilege to be elected as your Mayor for 2026/27 and I was delighted as one of my first duties to attend the 10th anniversary of the Porthcawl National Institution Coastwatch.

A very important voluntary organisation keeping our waters safe around Porthcawl. I would like to highlight that this station is the busiest in the national network and offer my thanks on behalf of the People of Porthcawl for their dedicated voluntary work in saving lives.

During my Mayoral year I have decided to continue with having a community consort, this is to give people within Porthcawl the opportunity to be involved in and have a greater understanding of Civic Events and the role of Town Mayor. If you would like to attend an event with me, please let me know so that you can be added to the list.

My chosen charities are to be The Samaritans - a group I volunteered for a number of years and Porthcawl National Coastwatch which is entirely supported by donations. I would welcome your support in these difficult times for these very worthy organisations.

This year for Porthcawl is very important with the regeneration plans and the continuing development of our town which will be defining for many generations The council will continue to work with Bridgend borough Council as these plans evolve.

I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to be twinned with Ploudalmezeau in Brittany. A beautiful coastal town with a lot in common with Porthcawl. I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the organised committee for their hard work in making this come to fruition and look forward to welcoming a civic party in September. I am sure it will be the start of a long and fruitful relationship in furthering our cultural affiliations.

The subject of toilets is an ongoing theme which will continue, but plans are in place to start the major restoration of John Street toilets, which I know is a subject many residents have shown concern. These works plan to start after the summer holidays so there will be disruption ahead which will be unavoidable.

Well, I am pleased to say that the Mayoral diary is filling up rapidly with events to include but not exclusively, The Inner wheel meeting, an art competition in Porthcawl Museum, Bridgend college awards and Porthcawl Comprehensive School production of west side story. I look forward to attending these events on your behalf and report back in future Seaside news issues.

NEWS SUMMER AT THE SEASIDE Vistors to Porthcawl this summer will once again be able to enjoy a day out at the seaside under the watchful eye of seasonal lifeguards from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

As part of a £45,465 three-year-contract with the RNLI, the charity’s lifeguards are present each day at Rest Bay, Coney Beach, Sandy Bay and Trecco Bay until Sunday 6 September.

The cover will change to weekends between 7–13 September at Rest Bay and 7-27 September at Coney Beach, Sandy Bay and Trecco Bay. Seasonal restrictions on dogs are also in place until 30 September at Town Beach, Rest Bay, Coney Beach, Sandy Bay and Trecco Bay, but they are welcome all year round at Newton Beach, Pink Bay and Sker Beach.

Elsewhere in Porthcawl, work is progressing on the transformation of Hillsboro Place as part of a £1.3m public realm improvement scheme. This will strengthen links between the town centre, the Metro Link and the waterfront area, and will provide a stunning public space suitable for supporting community events, pop-up business stalls and more.

The new space will include features that celebrate the site’s heritage and history and is all set to create a greener, attractive and more accessible environment for residents and visitors to enjoy.

UPDATE ON REGENERATION MASTERPLAN The recent planning application for the Porthcawl Waterfront Regeneration masterplan attracted a lot of feedback, and the council was happy to approve requests for extending the consultation deadline to ensure people had sufficient time to familiarise themselves with the details and could have their say.

We are now analysing all of the comments that were received and will be incorporating this into a final report which will be considered at a future meeting of the Development Control committee.

Given the high number of responses that need analysing and because it is hugely important to ensure this is a thorough and accurate process, we anticipate that the meeting will most likely take place in September.

As part of our approach to progressing the regeneration plans involves trying to develop the leisure elements separately to the housing, we are looking forward to making several exciting new announcements in the near future, so watch this space.

Finally, I also mentioned in my last column that an all-new ‘big wheel’ attraction is on its way to Porthcawl seafront, so I am delighted to confirm that this should be set up and ready to open in time for the start of the school summer holidays later this month.

Latest figures from the Corporate Parenting Board have highlighted how the number of children and young people in care across Bridgend County Borough is decreasing.

This is largely due to earlier intervention and support for families, greater workforce investment, lower caseloads, and more emphasis on improving the stability of care environments.

As of March 2026, 316 children and young people were classed as being ‘care experienced’ compared to a high of 374 recorded in April 2024.

The number of children moving between three or more care placements also decreased, falling by 14 per cent to 7.8 per cent.

Along with increased collaborative support, a more traumainformed approach has been developed which has been incorporated into a strategy for safely reducing care numbers.

This has helped to improve the effectiveness of council services for young people by enabling families to stay together or to be reunited safely while also reducing the need for children to enter care.

The Corporate Parenting Board enables the council and its partners to come together to benefit the lives of some of our most vulnerable young people. Success in this area requires genuine partnerships, shared responsibility and a collective determination to improve lives, so these results are great to see.

AFON KENFIG MUST ONCE AGAIN BECOME A THRIVING RIVER The damage caused by sewage discharges into the Afon Kenfig has been wholly unacceptable. During my visit, the river was unrecognisable—murky, grey water, sewage deposits clinging to the riverbed, debris drifting across the surface, and an overwhelming stench filling the air. What was once a living, vibrant river had been reduced to a shadow of itself, with no visible signs of life and natural habitats severely damaged. The scale of destruction was undeniable.

At the time, I urged Dŵr Cymru, Natural Resources Wales, and the Welsh Government to treat the situation as an emergency.

At the recent public meeting in Cornelly, the strength of local concern and the community’s determination to see the river restored were unmistakable.

It is welcome news that sewage discharges have now stopped, and early signs of recovery are beginning to emerge. However, this is only the start. There is still much work to be done to fully restore the Afon Kenfig—rebuilding habitats, bringing wildlife back, and ensuring the river can thrive once more.

I will continue to hold those responsible to account until the Afon Kenfig is restored to the healthy, flourishing river our community deserves.

ARTS PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Our joint concert with Kenfig Hill Male Voice Choir was a night to remember. The concert was arranged as a fund raiser for the vital work carried out by Sandville for the community. A full All Saints Church was treated to songs from each choir coupled with songs from the combined choirs. We were delighted to welcome Mayor of Bridgend Cllr Heidi Bennett and Deputy Mayor of Porthcawl Cllr Debbie Mottley who were present to support the evening. Also present was Don Daniel a founding member and former secretary of Kenfig Hill Choir. Don was celebrating his 95th birthday and both choirs together with the audience delighted him by singing happy birthday.

On 11 July we are holding a social evening at the Hi-Tide to honour twelve of our group who all joined the choir over 25 years ago. Choir President Geoff Dower will make long service award presentations.

Looking forward, make a note of our Annual Concert at All Saints on 5 September. We are delighted that top Welsh Soprano, Angharad Rees, will be our guest for the evening.

The 1960s was a decade that saw quite a few international co-productions reach the cinema screens in this country.

How they came into being is hard to say, but it is probably because European studios decided to co-operate in order to compete with the global dominance of Hollywood. Some worked better than others, and one of my favourites is “Monte Carlo or Bust” (1969), a co-production of the United Kingdom, France and Italy, with its gloriously zany animated opening title sequence supported by a very catchy tune composed by Ron Goodwin, who also wrote the lyrics.

Set in the 1920s, with a motley collection of automobiles, the cast, including Bourvil, Terry-Thomas, Eric Sykes, Tony Curtis, Gert Frobe and Susan Hampshire to name just a few, compete in an endurance race, starting in various parts of Europe, with the object of being the first to reach Monte Carlo in the sovereign state of Monaco. Along the way, the characters seem to exhibit predictable national characteristics to add to all the fun. It was directed by Britain’s Ken Annakin, a highly experienced and competent director with many successful comedies to his name. The opening titles can be found on YouTube.

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR Wedding season is upon us, and it gives us so much pleasure to perform at such happy occasions. To kick off July, we were delighted to host our Annual Lunch, where 150 guests joined us at Tondu Cricket Club for a memorable afternoon of friendship, laughs and music. DARRIAN CUP COMPETITION

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Pyle and Porthcawl PS recently entered the Darrian Cup Competition which was run by Barry Camera Club with 17 clubs entering 5 images each. Thanks to Bill Robertson our Club Competition Secretary we came 7th in the competition. These competitions are well supported by local camera clubs as a means of showing our members' work to the many clubs within South Wales and beyond. A special mention goes to Howard Evans who gained a top score of 20 with his image titled 'Nuts'.

This is a difficult column to write. I’ve got to begin with the death of my friend and local musician, Jeff “Wills” Williams.

I first met Wills back in the late 70s when he joined my original band, Warchild, to play on drums, along with Dale Williams on guitar. We toured for a couple of years before splitting, but he joined me again in the early 80s and played on my promo video for my single, “Ain’t No Fun OnThe Dole”. Wills then moved on to the guitar and became a highly respected guitarist, and went on to play in numerous bands, including The Fishermen, and more recently, prog band Prognosis, as well as part of the Hi Tide backing band at the Elvis Festival every year, in addition to backing comedian Owen Money.

I hadn’t seen Wills for some time, sadly, as he had been fighting his illness for three years. Jeff was a talented, modest and gentle soul who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Finally, some good news: Newton Food and Music Fest is on Saturday 29th August, and I will keep you further informed.

KENFIG HILL MVC NEWS As we set off on our 'Magical Mystery Tour' from Kenfig Hill to Liverpool, there was a real sense of excitement among the choristers. We had all 'Come Together' for another memorable adventure, fuelled by bacon baps, Scotch Eggs, good company and gin and tonics before reaching the M4. With enough picnic food to fill a 'Yellow Submarine' we headed up 'The Long and Winding Road' towards the city that gave the world The Beatles.

Liverpool offered 'Something' special at every turn. From the Royal Albert Dock to the famous Cavern Club, where the Fab Four first captured the imagination of music lovers around the world. The city is a living celebration of its musical heritage.

And as we headed out to explore the city by foot, guess what ...

'Here Comes the Sun'.

Our visit, however, was about more than just sightseeing. We had travelled to support the Hoylake RNLI and to share our love of singing. When 'All You Need Is Love', friendship and song, the Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir created memories that will last until 'When I'm Sixty-Four' and beyond.

SCHOOLS BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL A HEARTFELT ADDITION TO OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY

We have enjoyed a vibrant and successful late spring and early summer, with pupils taking part in a wide range of academic, cultural and community activities.

In May, pupils embraced enriching opportunities beyond the classroom. A group of Year 8 learners used their problemsolving skills in the ‘Seren Axiom Maths Challenge’ and Year 9 pupils attended a ‘Careers in Science’ talk with RSK Consultants.

The English department took 41 pupils to the Hay Literary Festival, where they met authors and gained inspiration.

The school celebrated success as the Year 7 boys’ team and U13 and U15 girls’ teams won the Cwpan Penybont. Bryntirion achieved the Gold Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus Award, recognising its outstanding work in promoting Welsh language and culture.

In June Year 7 pupils commenced a month-long ‘My Health Challenge’ and explored Welsh history through an Owain Glyndwr podcast project while Year 8 pupils led fundraising activities through their First Give programme, including a visit to Sandville Self Help Centre.

Meanwhile, Year 9 pupils showcased skills in Dragons Den heats, and Year 10 geographers explored Porthcawl redevelopment plans with a local planner. The school was selected for the Renishaw GEARS programme, supporting girls into STEM careers.

Around 1 in every 100 children is born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD), often requiring surgery in infancy and ongoing specialist care throughout their lives.

At Porthcawl Primary School, we are proud to support pupils and families affected by CHD. Over the years, we have made it a priority to be a “heart-aware” school, with staff regularly undertaking training from a range of medical professionals to ensure we can meet the needs of all our pupils and provide the best possible support for their families.

We are delighted to announce the installation of a Public Access Defibrillator (P.A.D.) on our school grounds, thanks to the generosity and support of the Porthcawl Community First Responders. The defibrillator is now live and available for use by the whole community, providing an important resource in emergency situations.

The installation was carried out by Roger and Matthew from the Community First Responders, with assistance from Harriet, one of our pupils. The occasion was made even more special as Harriet was celebrating the 10th anniversary of her open-heart surgery on the very same day.

Congratulations, Harriet! We were honoured to celebrate your special “Happy Heart Day” with you. Thank you also to the Porthcawl Community First Responders for helping make this valuable addition possible.

NEWTON PRIMARY NEWS This term, our pupils are exploring the vibrant and exciting world of Festivals and Carnivals, the perfect topic to celebrate and end the year in style.

Our topic launched with a fantastic Newtonfest, where pupils had the opportunity to showcase their talents in a true festival atmosphere.

Performances included singers and rappers, dancers, magicians and gymnasts, all entertaining an enthusiastic audience.

Throughout the term, all learning and activities will build towards our exciting end-of-term celebration: Newtonbury, Newton’s very own festival.

To enrich their learning, pupils were fortunate to take part in a guided visit to the In It Together Festival, the first school to ever visit the festival! They gained first-hand insight into how largescale festivals are created and managed. They explored how organisers meet the needs of all festival goers by providing inclusive experiences that cater for different ages, interests and musical tastes.

Our afternoon sessions will lead directly into Year 5 and Year 6 pupils taking responsibility for planning, organising and delivering our Land Day – Newtonbury Festival.

It has been a busy month! There has been a lot taking place at PCS. Year 8 pupils have taken part in a careers event with local and national employers, D of E pupils have completed first aid training, and our school council have engaged in workshops with Bridgend Youth Council. Our fortnightly ‘Enrichment’ lessons are in full flow; outdoor learning, the school garden, coding, sport, dance and community walks to name a few, there is a lot going on! We have held our Year 6 ‘Helping Hands’ transition events and it has been lovely to meet some of our new Year7 pupils. Recently, Year 9 pupils have attended a Forest Schools Trip and Performing Arts pupils have visited London. We have held our induction week for Year12 as they move into their final year and prepare for university and employment, and Our Year 10 pupils start Work Experience soon. I look forward to hearing about their experiences. Year 8 have also competed in the Bridgend Schools’ Football Final, which I am delighted to report they won! Congratulations to all those involved. The whole school Tennis Tournament is nearly underway, and our annual school Sports Day is nearly here. Once again, I am sure more school records will be broken this year. Good luck to all our pupils who are leaving us for pastures new. See you on exam results day!

FEATURES NEW WALKING AND RIDING LEAFLET FOR KENFIG A new leaflet is available describing some of the many walking and riding trails across the Nature Reserve. One side of the leaflet describes two circular walks starting from the Reserve Centre. The Sker Beach Trail is 3 miles long and takes walkers through the dunes down to the beach, and back via a different path.. The Green Trail is about half a mile long and takes you down to Kenfig Pool and back to the Centre through dunes and woodland.

The leaflet gives information about what you are likely to see at different points, with numbered posts corresponding to the description in the leaflet The reverse of the leaflet shows several possible circular walks or rides using public Bridleways or Footpaths, ranging from 3 miles to 6.5 miles. These are best walked in a clockwise direction, starting from the Centre and going down to the Haul Road which runs the length of the Reserve just above the beach. Return routes through the dunes are marked.

TALBOT COMMUNITY CENTRE One of our Coffee Morning ladies – Mrs Audrey Jones – is as proud as a peacock. Her granddaughter Leane, and several friends have finally made their sky dive from Swansea Aerodrome. It’s taken them several months to make the dive because every time they planned it they woke up to inclement weather. But finally, the donations they had collected, several thousands of pounds, can now be passed to Ty Hafan, Congratulations everyone.

Open invitation – to those of you interested in our Walled Garden, why not pop in any Friday between 11a.m. and 1 p.m. to see how our garden is progressing. The greenhouse has been erected, and the tomatoes are coming along a treat, and the raised beds are in and ready to be planted up. If you would like to get your hands dirty and get involved, we would love to have you join us. One of our supports scooped Aprils top prize in the Bridgend Community Lotto. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMAN’S GUILD NEWS June saw the welcome return of the Rev. Clive Williams and Clive with his passion for music ensured that some of that enthusiasm rubbed off on everybody. It was a delight to hear the music which in turn created an uplifting mood that Clive always manages to initiate in everyone.

Our July meeting will be one of pure delight for doggie lovers as we are being treated to meeting puppies in the early stages of their guide dog training. I am sure there will be lots of gasp’s ooh’s and aah’s as we attempt to formally introduce them to the members. At the end of the meeting, we will be conducting a roll call of the number of visiting puppies and possibly a random search of large bags to ensure that the puppies are returned for future training We always meet on the second Wednesday afternoon of the month at 2.00 pm in the Grove Golf Club. If you fancy a new perspective and a change of scenery then do come along, sample our hospitality and enjoy a coffee and a natter with like-minded ladies.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PORTHCAWL

This month you’re invited to join us for our annual Sea Sunday service on 12th July at 3pm in Cosy Corner. It’s an opportunity for us to come together and pay tribute to all those we rely on who live and work at sea, as well as those who help keep us safe around our coastline locally. Our thoughts and prayers this year will focus particularly on the challenges faced by thousands of seafarers trapped in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz. We’ll also learn about the work of the Mission to Seafarers. Speakers will include Zoe Davis, a Marine Pilot, and Laurence Bater from our local Coastwatch team. We’re thrilled that Choirs for Good will be joining us to perform as well.

Our next Beach Clean session will be on the following day, Monday 13th July. Meet us outside Sussed (James Street) at 11am for an hour, followed by a cuppa and chat.

Our final fundraising total for Christian Aid this year was £2,814.95, which with Gift Aid added made almost £3,000. Diolch o galon to all those who contributed to this – it shows how much is possible when we work together.

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI June 9th was the 1st meeting with our new committee and officers.

Our speaker today was from SPLICE a locally based child and family project. The aim of the project is to provide children and families with social, physical, language, intellectual, creative and emotional development. It offers a family centered service which supports parents/carers to play and learn with their children, helping to develop their confidence and raise their self - esteem and mostly to have fun. There are various ongoing sessions throughout the week at their community-based centre in Kenfig Hill which includes a baby bank and food pantry. Many of our members were unaware of this wonderful local service. A donation was made to this excellent, and much needed project from the friends of Mynydd Cynffig WI. Details of our summer outing to Abergavenny and Brecon were agreed with enthusiasm by all members.

Our next meeting will be on 14th July at 2pm If you are interested in joining us then please come along.

NEWS FROM SEASIDE STITCHERS

Seaside Stitchers held a Sew-a-thon in April to make quilted hugs for sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease, a disease which, among other symptoms, causes sufferers to lose the ability to control their body temperature. The Sew-a-thon was well attended by members with a total of 16 quilted hugs in a variety of sizes and colours being completed either on the day or shortly after.

At the monthly meeting on June 8th members who had participated in the Sew-a-thon modelled their hug before presenting Janet Fisher from the local MND Association with the hugs. Janet thanked the group for their continuing support and explained how much the hugs will be appreciated by those who receive one.

COMMUNITY GENEROSITY Porthcawl Stroke Club Secretary Mrs Sue Ward was involved with the Seagull Pub Quiz evenings alongside the quiz Master Roy who is responsible for arranging the charity. They presented a cheque of £527 pounds for the Porthcawl Stroke Club. We thank all the people, who were involved in the quiz and raffle for their generous donation to a local charity. This is not the first time the Seagull Pub has supported us, so we thank them all from the bottom of our hearts, sincere gratitude for the cheque, which keeps our services going.

Now we have about 25 members who regularly attend the provision, and our calendar is once again full, with many planned activities and trips to look forward to. It’s a haven of hope for Stroke survivors in a happy uplighting place and security, where people can meet many new friends and still relate to old ones.

Keith and Mary Duggan still run this amazing facility, and we express our deep gratitude to them both, for the all the years of volunteer service to the club. We thank Susan Ward and all the volunteers for their loyal dedication it’s a blessing.

FEATURES JOGGLING FOR GUIDE DOGS

toiletries, kitchenware, clothing, etc. Ty Cornel is our chosen charity for this year, and our president Eunice presented Nicki with a cheque plus some of the items they had requested.

Following the presentation they all stayed to enjoy tea or coffee and to chat to the members.

We are looking forward to attending the Glamorgan General Meeting in Maesteg, the Glamorgan Show in Aberavon plus we are planning to go out for an evening meal in August.

We are a friendly group and always welcome new members to come and join us.

Deadline date for the August issue is: WEDNESDAY 15TH JULY Guide Dogs volunteers were out in force at a Porthcawl Parkrun to cheer on a puppy raiser with a special skill – joggling! Ali Bolton, who is bringing up guide dog puppy Selwyn, juggled three brightly-coloured balls while running with the crowds to raise money for Guide Dogs.

The event completed 102km of joggling by Ali, the distance reflecting the £102,000 needed to breed, raise and train a guide dog.

Ali said: “Over the past seven months I have come to quite enjoy joggling, although I never thought I would. Several donations were from random people I had never met who happened to be running alongside me. I’m grateful to everyone who made kind and encouraging comments as I muddled my way through, especially in the beginning when I was dropping the balls every few minutes.”

Ali’s family brought guide dog puppy Selwyn along to watch her at the Parkrun, where they were joined by fellow Guide Dogs volunteers. Ali said: “I love the community we’ve found and didn't realise all those volunteers were all out there. The children love having a puppy in the house.”

SKER WI On 28th June we held our Annual Meeting which was very well attended. The annual reports of the various events and trips we have enjoyed over the last year were read and we look forward to another successful year. After the WI business, the ladies were treated to a buffet supper provided by the committee.

Our July meeting speakers were Nicki and Tom from Ty Cornel who came along with four of the young people they are currently helping. Ty Cornel is a hostel for 16- to 18-year-olds who, for various reasons, find themselves homeless. They are helped to live independent lives with many going on to college or employment. Also provided is a mediation service to encourage the teenagers to return to their families if possible.

The centre receives very little funding from the Government, relying on donations from businesses and the community of either money or everyday essential items such as bedding, 36 | seaside news

PORTHCAWL ROTARY CLUB President Alison of Porthcawl Rotary Club recently presented a cheque to Porthcawl Comprehensive School student Lola to support her forthcoming trip to a school in Ugandato purchase mattresses.

Joining the initiative will be Steve Locke and Sarah Morgan, who will also be assisting with work at the school during the visit.

Alison also attended the official opening of the beautifully refurbished Jungle Ward at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales. Visitors were given the opportunity to see some of the new equipment which was funded through the Rotary jewellery appeal, including one of the gaming machines and the impressive Rhino sensory machine, both designed to enhance the experience of young patients receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the National Final of the Rotary Young Musician Competition recently took place in Cheshire, showcasing exceptional performances from 12 finalists across instrumental and vocal categories. Audiences were treated to renditions of works by legendary composers such as Mozart, alongside iconic numbers from musical theatre.

The winner of the Instrumental Category was Anxo Garcia, supported by Maidstone Dawn Patrol Rotary Club, while the Vocal Category was won by Grace Hillis, supported by Wellingborough Rotary.

PORTHCAWL LIONS Porthcawl Lions have had a busy time recently. First, thank a big thank you to Pyle Garden Centre which allowed the club to set out its information stall there one Saturday.

Some members took some of the club’s games to Newton Primary School fete. The money raised from the stall will go towards the pupil’s prom night.

One Saturday the club also had a successful presence in John Street with a tombola stall, a book stall and some games. It is hoped that this presence can be repeated on fine Saturdays during the summer. The book stall was particularly successful so anyone who has any paperback fiction books they would like to donate, they would be very welcome.

Two events to hopefully look forward to during the summer are the annual sand sculpture competition and some bingo afternoons, but more news of these next month.

HISTORY JULY 1964 - MODS AND ROCKERS

Two conflicting youth subcultures clashed continuously in 1964 - the Mods and the Rockers. The Mod subculture was centred on fashion and music. They wore parkas and suits, rode scooters, and listened to jazz, soul, Motown, ska and R & B. The Rocker subculture was centred on motorcycling.

They wore leather jackets and winklepickers, sported quiffs or pompadours, listened to rock ‘n’ roll and, like the Mods, R & B. The 1964 clashes started in January when police fought with 1,500 teenage Mods who wanted to appear on the TV show Ready, Steady, Go! Girls fainted and policemen’s helmets went flying.

More serious incidents occurred on Britain’s beaches, including at Margate, Brighton, Hastings and Clacton where over 120 people were arrested for violence and theft. Fines and jail sentences followed.

Moral outrage in Parliament and in the newspapers led to claims that the Mods and the Rockers were “vermin” and “louts”.

And that these “Wild Ones” were “enemies who would bring about the disintegration of a nation's character".

However, in a sober editorial The Daily Mirror stated: “The Wild Ones of Clacton are a pathetic minority. The great mass of sensible, level-headed youngsters in Britain outnumbers them - and always will.”

DARE THE MILLERS - PART 2

Following his brother Frank’s move to the Ogmore Mill, Edmund Compton Dare ran the Steam Mill on Station Hill as well as operating the Llanfihangel Water Mill at Pyle. Yet by 1874 the Porthcawl Mill had been sold and converted into Assembly Rooms, resulting in Edmund moving to Bridgend, and eventually to the Ogmore Mill in 1889.

Edmund’s son John Thomas Dare, born in 1849, carried on the family flair for enterprise. He created sufficient capital, through various jobs, to establish a new mill behind the Victoria Hotel, where he imported wheaten flour from the Vale of Glamorgan and produced ‘Dare’s Stone Gound Bread’; endorsed as a healthy option by doctors and publicized in the Daily Mail!

By 1881 J.T. had married Maria Taylor, moved into ‘Prospect House,’ New Road and opened a commercial bakery selling the bread. By 1901 he had established two bakery and catering establishments in John Street. One was in, what is today, the YMCA and the other was The York Café; Divine’s today. (photo) To meet demand for his bread, in 1914, J.T. leased the Newcastle Mill, Bridgend (Millfield Road) and appointed Ellaway & Son, Bridgend bakers, as the local suppliers.

When J T Dare died in 1919 his son Jack Dare took up the business.

HEALTH & WELLBEING COST OF CANCER - WHAT WE DO We would like to give a big shout out to The Rock in Porthcawl as they raised a whopping £433 in their pub quiz. We went to collect the money, but we also got a team together to take part, and we had a great time down there with Ruth and the team. If you are looking at something to do on a Sunday evening get down there, it’s a really great night and they raise money for so many charities. Thank you.

You can still get tickets for our 10th Anniversary charity ball in October. We are looking for raffle prizes and auction prizes so if anyone has something they can donate, we would appreciate it. We also need volunteers for the night so if you are free on the night of the 24th October down in The Bear in Cowbridge we would appreciate it.

WHERE ON EARTH IS IT? Maybe you have had such a moment right when you need something it has disappeared, phone, glasses, keys. Just as you need to leave your home. Panic sets in someone near to you seeing you spiral asks “Where did you have them last” adding to your frustration. Knowing if you could answer that you would already have opened the door and headed outside.

Usually slowing down, stopping, looking around and taking a breath gets you out of “can’t find mode to oh there you are” as you recall the safe place you left them, so you would avoid the current searching drama. Obvious really!

Interestingly the search usually turns up something else you had lost maybe audio ear buds a book or coins and you then experience the satisfaction of finding something unexpectedly.

Maybe slowing down, stopping, looking around and taking a breath could release you from the daily minor panics we all feel as we deal with home, family, work, learning and social occasions.

Life now is always pushing us to fit something else in, but you have another option to stay as you are or even take something out. You get to decide.

LEGAL LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAS) What happens when I can’t make decisions for myself? Many of us would like to plan for a time when we need help making decisions and looking after our affairs. A stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s, heart attack, or a severe accident can leave us dependent upon others to help make crucial choices in our lives. Or we may need to give someone decision-making power for us if, say, we’re going to be in hospital or abroad for a time and can’t easily carry out decisions for ourselves.

To plan for the future you can create an LPA. An LPA is a simple way for you to choose someone you trust to make decisions for you. LPAs can be a lot less expensive than other ways for people to make decisions on your behalf and can make things much easier for other people in your life than the alternatives.

• Your spouse, children or friends will have to go to court to make decisions on your behalf – which will be a lot more expensive and time-consuming than making an LPA now.

If you still have mental capacity, LPAs are a simple and legally robust way of giving someone you trust the power to make decisions for you – temporarily or for a longer time.

DIVIDING UP CONTENTS IN A DIVORCE Lawyers often become frustrated when, having negotiated a deal for the family home, the pensions, and the savings, they hit an impasse over the contents of the home itself.

There are various ways to divide the contents of a family home.

The same principles apply to all family finance disputes – consider the parties’ needs first and if one spouse has particular needs – maybe through disability or because they will have to provide a home for children, then any division should focus upon meeting those needs first.

The principle of sharing is applied to ‘matrimonial property’, and the contents of the family home will normally be matrimonial property, though there may be some exceptions, such as in relation to family heirlooms or items owned before the marriage or inherited during it.

There are various ways to go about achieving a fair division.

You can equalise the number of items so that each party walks away with half, alternating who picks what. You can attempt to divide the items according to their value, but this will mean agreeing what each item is worth, and whether the value should be assessed by its second-hand value or replacement cost.

Alternatively, you can hold a closed bid auction by preparing an inventory of the items and each attributing a value to each item. The party who has attributed the higher figure ‘buys’ that item at that price. Then the party having the higher total value of the items pays to the other a cash lump sum in consideration of the difference.

July brings long, warm days and rapid plant growth, so the focus is on watering, feeding, and keeping plants in good shape. Water containers, baskets and newly planted shrubs deeply in the early morning or evening. Mulch around borders can help conserve moisture. Feed flowering plants weekly with a highpotash fertiliser to keep blooms coming.

Deadhead roses, annuals and perennials to prolong colour. Trim back faded hardy geraniums and delphiniums to encourage a second flush. Tie in tall plants and climbers before they flop or snap in summer breezes.

In the veg patch, continue sowing salads, beetroot and dwarf beans. Keep tomatoes evenly watered to prevent blossom end rot, pinching outside shoots where necessary.

Mow lawns weekly, raise the blade in dry weather. Check for pests such as aphids, whitefly and slugs, dealing with them early to prevent damage. With steady care, July rewards us with colour, scent and generous harvests, enjoy!

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB If I had my way I'd remove January from the calendar altogether and have another July instead! (Roald Dahl) Make dead-heading flowers a daily task this month such as lupins and sweet peas can be kept going an extra three weeks this way so well worth it!

Early flowering perennials that have had their day can be cut back hard to 5cm above the ground, they will quickly produce neat mounds of fresh foliage and, if you’re lucky, another flush of beautiful blooms. Fabulous! Remove any buds from dahlia plants below the leading flower bud, this will strengthen the stem and make the remaining flowers noticeably larger.

Lawns should be cut weekly now (preferably twice) but don't waste your grass clippings, they make an excellent mulch hydrangeas, do not apply direct to the plants base, spread around the plant to help retain moisture (they are thirsty plants) This also works well on potatoes, fresh grass clippings are rich in nitrogen essential to potato growth.

You can turn pink hydrangeas blue by putting coffee granules round the base and blue ones pink by applying garden lime, but did you know white hydrangeas will stay white whatever soil they are in!

The proceeds of this concert will go to CHILL (Cancer Help In Local Lives), a local charity who give support to people going through cancer and to their loved ones who also need support during this difficult time. Their “bags of love” are given as an essential package to people going through cancer treatment and are put together by those who have experienced the cancer journey themselves and who know only too well what is appreciated and useful at this difficult time. Their monthly meetings provide emotional support to anyone affected by cancer and they are there to hold the hand of anyone affected by this disease.

Tickets are £10 for adults and £6 for under 18 (cash only) and are available from choir members and on the door. There will be refreshments and a raffle with great prizes to be won. Concert starts at 7.30pm.

PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE – ROSSINI Translated as Little Solemn Mass, this was one of Rossini’s last works, composed in 1863, 30 years after his last opera. It is a unique blend of the comic and devotional, of superficiality and deep feeling, “full of drama, pathos, colour and intensity” (Robert King). It was not written for a church, but for performance for a very select audience in Paris!

Côr Bro Ogwr will be performing this dramatic, operatic mass with four professional soloists, including Jessica Robinson, the first Welsh finalist in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. The performance is at 4.30 pm in Bridgend Tabernacle Church, Derwen Rd, Bridgend.

Tickets are £12.00 and can be bought from choristers, or at the door on the day of the performance. We hope you can join us for this very special afternoon.

Porthcawl NCI is one of the smallest and oldest stations in the NCI, being just around 10ft in diameter and built in 1860… but it’s one of the most iconic NCI stations and has been seen numerous times on TV and in the papers, with waves crashing all around.

Since 2016, the station has been involved with over 650 incidents along the coastline, and over the last 6 years was the busiest station across the whole NCI network of 60 stations. In 2025 alone, through reporting to Search and Rescue partners and requests from them to Porthcawl NCI, 80 persons have been assisted or rescued. A big thank you for that.

However, we cannot work alone, and the station here at Porthcawl is a shining example of how to build relationships with the RNLI, the Coastguard and the local Police. Working together as one team, each with their own expertise, has proved time and time again to be the winning formula. Well done, and long may it continue.

Surf life saving is a very diverse sport and can offer something to suit everyone! At Rest Bay we provide high quality surf life saving, swimming, ocean and beach training.

If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have lots of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.

Nippers are aged between 7-13. As a Nipper, your child will be taught surf safety, first aid, surf and beach sports such as wading, surf swimming, board paddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays.

Our Youth section is between the age of 13-18. During the summer months we train at Rest Bay beach, and also at Pyle Swimming pool throughout the year.

Our focus is to teach our youth how to save lives.

Lots of youth members also like to compete in regional, national and international competitions. Our youth section also train to become Lifeguards and carry out voluntary patrols as part of our training programme.

Our aim is to provide the lifeguards of tomorrow with training to help keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying our wonderful beaches.
