LETTERS BROADWAY CHORUS DONATE £2,600 TO CHILL Dear Editor, Broadway Chorus were thrilled to donate £2,600 to CHILL following our Summer Serenade concert at All Saints Church Porthcawl on 4th July. CHILL is a small local charity who give support to people dealing with cancer and to their families and friends at this difficult time. Their monthly meetings provide emotional support to anyone affected by cancer and they are there to hold the hand of anyone affected by this disease. Their “bags of love” containing essential and thoughtful items are very gratefully received by those affected. Representatives from the charity were present on the night of the concert and spoke beautifully about the work they do.

The choir was led by the wonderful Liz York and accompanied

by Chris Williams. It was a foot tapping, hand clapping extravaganza of well-known tunes which the audience loved singing along to. There were stunning solo performances and a duet from Harmony Sunshine and Ben Joseph and some lovely readings by choir members. We were all thrilled to receive a standing ovation at the end.

We look forward to seeing you at our Christmas concert on Friday 4th December!

AN OPEN PLEA TO BRIDGEND COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL Dear Bridgend County Borough Council, We write on behalf of many residents who feel that the current regeneration proposals no longer reflect the future that our communities want for Porthcawl.

There is a growing sense that the vision presented today is based on an outdated plan—one conceived years ago, before today’s priorities of sustainable tourism, environmental protection, wellbeing, and creating year-round employment became so important.

Our community is not asking for regeneration to stop. We are asking for it to be better.

Porthcawl’s waterfront and Sandy Bay represent one of the greatest opportunities the borough has ever had. They should become a destination that attracts visitors throughout the year, supports local businesses, creates opportunities for young people, protects our natural environment and strengthens our economy for generations to come.

Once these decisions are made, they cannot simply be reversed. Our coastline, our open spaces and our opportunity to create a truly outstanding seaside destination will be changed forever.

Across our community there is a strong feeling that the regeneration should be revisited before irreversible mistakes are made. People are asking for a better balance—one that still delivers homes, but also places greater emphasis on leisure, tourism, hospitality, hotels, green spaces, visitor facilities, parking and the long-term prosperity of the whole borough.

We urge Bridgend County Borough Council to pause, reflect and genuinely listen to the strength of feeling being expressed by residents, businesses and community groups. Good regeneration should evolve as communities evolve. It should respond to today’s challenges and today’s aspirations—not remain tied to a vision that many people believe no longer represents Porthcawl’s future.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Please work with your communities, not simply for them.

Help create a regeneration that future generations will thank you for—not one they will spend decades trying to correct.

Porthcawl deserves a future built on opportunity, investment, leisure, tourism and pride.

Please don’t let this opportunity be lost forever.

PROPERTY WHY SKIPPING A PROPERTY SURVEY COULD BE A COSTLY MISTAKE Buying a home is one of the biggest financial commitments most people will ever make, yet new research suggests that a surprising number of buyers are choosing to skip one of the most important parts of the process: the property survey.

According to recent research by Direct Line Home Insurance, more than one in five UK homebuyers (21%) did not commission a survey before purchasing their property. The most common reason given was confidence in their own assessment of the home. While it's understandable that buyers may feel they can spot obvious issues during a viewing, many significant defects remain hidden from view and can only be identified by a qualified surveyor.

The research also found that 15% of buyers believed a survey wasn't necessary when purchasing a new-build property.

Others cited the cost of a survey (14%), while 13% relied on a family member working in construction to deal with any future problems. Alarmingly, a further 13% admitted they simply hadn't considered arranging a survey or weren't aware of its importance.

These findings become even more noteworthy when considering that some sellers may not disclose every issue affecting a property. The research found that boiler and heating system faults were the most commonly concealed problems, cited by 7% of sellers surveyed. Drainage and plumbing issues, damp or condensation, and electrical defects were each withheld by 6% of respondents. This highlights the importance

of obtaining an independent survey to identify potential concerns before committing to a purchase.

Property surveys provide an independent assessment of a home's condition, helping to give all parties a clearer understanding of the property being sold. They can identify areas that may require future maintenance or attention, allowing buyers to proceed with confidence and helping transactions progress with greater transparency. By establishing a clear picture of a property's condition from the outset, surveys can reduce the likelihood of unexpected issues arising later in the conveyancing process.

It's also important to remember that many maintenance related problems are not covered by standard home insurance policies. Small issues left undetected can quickly develop into expensive repairs, causing unnecessary stress and disruption after moving in.

Whether you're buying your first home, moving up the property ladder, or investing in a property, a professional survey remains one of the most valuable steps you can take to protect your investment and ensure there are no unwelcome surprises after collecting the keys.

We all need human contact, who wants to relate to machines? but service staff are fast disappearing, 'AUTOMATION!', that's what that means.

I wouldn't trust a robot, a friendly face is still what's needed, this so-called progress makes us frustrated and our familiar routines are impeded.

Online shopping has emptied the high street the Banks are closing down, banking online is what's expected but we'd rather do business in town.

All this change hasn't made people happy, look around they're all glued to their phones, stressed to the hilt and unsociable, a generation of 'oblivious clones!'.

It makes one feel they're invisible, no one speaks when you pass on your walk, forgetting the art of conversation, let me tell you...It's Good to Talk.

NEWS WHAT A GREAT SUMMER SO FAR FOR PORTHCAWL!

state-of-the-art facility with computer facilities that I am sure will help golfers improve their prowess on the course.

A busy month for events coinciding with glorious summer sunshine but this does not stop the work on the Grand Pavilion continuing which I can confirm is on schedule for completion in early 2028. Following a recent visit, much work on the foundations was revealed but the first visible sign to passersby will be a large crane (to be lit up at night and visible from Devon) to be erected this month.

The judging of the Porthcawl Art society annual competition was both difficult and rewarding . Well done to all those who entered… why not drop in to the Art Society above the Museum and view Porthcawl’s hidden talent.

I was pleased to attend the AGM of the Porthcawl branch of the Inner Wheel organisation. A great social event for Ladies of Porthcawl to meet at the same time as raising funds for local worthy causes.

Representing Porthcawl at the year-end awards ceremony at Bridgend college was inspiring as awards were made for all kinds of qualifications both academic, vocational and life skills.

Following on a similar skill theme, my Wife and I were delighted to open the new driving range at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club - a

Whilst on a sporting theme with all this dry weather, I attended an event to mark the opening of the new automatic irrigation system for the bowls green in Griffin Park which given the current weather couldn’t come soon enough. The ambition is to host a county event next year and hopefully this system will play its part.

l must give a mention to this year’s Porthcawl Comprehensive school performances of West side story. A particular favourite of mine and this was a superb production. Congratulations to all who took part and those who helped make it happen!

BRIDGEND ARMED FORCES DAY

Bridgend Town Council celebrated the military community on Armed Forces Day in Bridgend Town Centre with a free event which included a parade, entertainment, activities and a retired French Army Colonel leaving the event in an armoured vehicle!

HM Lord Lieutenant Peter Vaughan opened the event with a speech and a parade led by pipers from The Queens Gurkha Signals saw veterans and cadets march through the town centre.

Cllr. Michelle Blundell Humphreys, Mayor of Bridgend Town said “This year was particularly special as we were able to share the day with visitors from Bridgend’s French Twin Town Villenave D’Ornon. Their choir, Chorale Du Lac gave a

rousing performance on the Entertainment Stage during the event.

The pinnacle of the day was enabling 80-yearold French veteran Christian to relive his military past as he accompanied Councillor Mike Smith in a tank as they left the town centre.”

Visitors to the event enjoyed a climbing wall, a mobile cave experience, children’s crafts, facepainting and there were 27 organisations in attendance. The competition for the Mayors Best Cadet Cup was as strong as ever, Cpl Salkeld of 1092 Sqn Air Cadets was named the winner.

REGENERATION AND HOUSING IN PORTHCAWL

Porthcawl looked fantastic during the recent Brecon Carreg Porthcawl 10K, and I am delighted that the event – the sixth to be held in the town – was completely sold out and such a success.

Almost 7,000 people took part, with many visiting Porthcawl for the first time. The good weather helped showcase the town as a tourist destination and generated a huge boost for the local economy.

Entries have already opened for the next Porthcawl 10K on Sunday 27 June 2027, and you can find out more at www. porthcawl10k.co.uk Because we want Bridgend County Borough to be a vibrant place where people can thrive and prosper, we are also holding workshops where you can share your views on issues that matter most.

Ever wondered why the Porthcawl Waterfront Regeneration includes up to 980 new homes?

Because the UK is facing a housing crisis, we need more places for people to live. Our local population will increase by almost 14,000 by 2033, and we currently have almost 550 registered homeless people and 295 households using temporary accommodation.

Unless we provide more housing, not everyone is going to have a home.

The plan seeks to meet local housing and community needs, and to balance this with plenty of green space, new leisure opportunities, new shops and businesses, new buildings for community use, new space for local events and more.

Much of this will be provided by reinvesting money generated from selling land for housing development.

Many who have grown up in Porthcawl cannot afford to buy a house here, so we want to make half of the planned housing affordable, to prioritise local working people first, to introduce a range of tenures, and to place restrictions on things like holiday lets.

We are not building seaside apartments for rich people – this is about providing new homes, leisure opportunities and facilities for a full community of families, older people, couples, individuals living alone, key workers, veterans and more, and ensuring that Porthcawl can thrive.

HOW THE SHARED LIVES SERVICE IS HELPING LOCAL PEOPLE Did you know that Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan councils jointly operate a Shared Lives scheme?

Shared Lives helps adults who have additional support needs to live independently within a supportive family home, or to take short respite breaks that give their own family carers a rest.

Aimed at individuals who may have learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, mental health issues and dementia, the service matches them with a trained carer who invites the person needing support into their own family home.

This helps people to live a full life as part of a local community, and to develop new skills and independence while improving their sense of well-being.

In many ways, it is more than a service as Shared Lives helps people to experience ordinary life while forming genuine relationships.

Our Shared Lives carers come from a range of backgrounds and receive full training, and the service is always keen to hear from people with a stable home situation who are patient, kind and have a passion for helping others.

PYLE ADVICE SURGERY & CORNELLY PUBLIC MEETING It’s been another productive month across our community, giving me the opportunity to listen to residents and champion local issues.

It began with a well-attended advice surgery at Pyle Library, where residents brought forward a wide range of concerns and issues. These sessions remain one of the most important parts of my role as your MP, providing an opportunity to hear directly from local people about the challenges they face and to offer support and guidance. I am always grateful to those who take the time to come along and speak with me.

I also attended and spoke at a public meeting in Cornelly regarding the sewage discharge that affected the Afon Kenfig. Residents spoke passionately about the impact on this valued local river and the wider environment. The strength of feeling demonstrated how much people care about protecting our natural spaces. There was a clear desire to see meaningful action taken and to ensure that the Afon Kenfig is restored and safeguarded for future generations.

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Congratulations to Jan Dowden, a member of our group who we inspired to complete the Art & Design Foundation at Swansea University. After a long nursing career, Jan took the leap back into full-time education and is now ready to embark on an illustration degree this Autumn. The sketchbook from her studies is full of exciting ideas, many of which will inspire the paintings Jan exhibits with us in the gallery.

You may have seen us exhibiting some of our paintings in the street on a sunny Saturday recently and it was lovely to chat about our art. Our main gallery is free to enter, upstairs above the museum in John Street and is open to the public 11-3pm Wed, Fri, Sat and other days too when volunteers are available. Come and view the paintings in our latest summer exhibition, judged by our new Mayor, Martin Rock.

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR NEWS It has been a sad few weeks with the passing of Choir stalwart and past Chairman John Pearman.

John had been a choir member for over 40 years and represented everything good the choir stood for and so many choristers will be grateful for his support and encouragement over many years. John’s last appearance for the choir was in a film by Welsh Film Director Jamie Adams starring Quentin Tarantino and Kylie Minogue. Years previously, John, as a guide for Cardiff Castle, had taken Kylie on a tour. She was pleased to reminisce with him as the photo shows. John will be greatly missed.

Whilst feature films and television programmes are very much controlled by a script, and the skills of the director and a large production staff are necessarily required to portray the scripted scenes accurately, there is something beguilingly simple and straightforward about the documentary production that takes its camera out into the world and records life as it is. Mitchell and Kenyon were two British early 20th century filmmakers who captured everyday scenes of town life, sporting events and day-to-day happenings in amazingly clear detail, giving us a glimpse into the society of a past era. Ever since, documentary makers have endeavoured to follow that principle through successive decades, turning everyday subjects, mundane at the time, into something which now seems priceless.

My own fear is that the ready accessibility of media devices now somehow diminishes the significance of the subject into short scenes captured disjointedly and ultimately discarded, without there being a purposefully themed narrative, and can we guarantee that the technology of today will not be superseded by that of tomorrow, and cast into a digital oblivion? Only time will provide the answer, but all my early films still exist on negative, whereas more recent recordings on tape are now obsolete.

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Well, summer is definitely here, although being a “ginger” doesn’t sit well with yours truly.

I don’t mind sunny days, but this heat has made me more reclusive than I normally am. This time of the year, I’ve usually got the running order for Newton Food and Music Festival held on Saturday 29th August. My good mate, Steve Maitland Thomas, who was the original organiser of the event and was there at the birth of it, is sadly no longer involved, but I’m sure it’s going to be a brilliant day with, as always, top local live music. I will be attending, so say hello, but I’m not performing.

Going further afield, I’ve got some good shows coming up for your diaries. “The Manic Street Preachers” and “Suede” play Cardiff Utilita Arena on 3rd and 4th November. Also in our capital city, Cardiff Castle plays host to “Hollywood Vampires” from the U.S.A., featuring Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper and “Aerosmith’s” Joe Perry on 14th August. Sounds like fun. And remember, when you want me to plug your gig, event or jam night, give me plenty of notice.

Choristers and music team alike have enjoyed a warm summer of rehearsal and have added some exciting new songs to our repertoire as we head quickly towards a busy autumn. We also hosted a hugely successful Annual Lunch at Tondu Cricket Club, where more than 120 choristers and guests with Shane Williams MBE as our keynote speaker (pictured with our President and Chairman), packed Tondu Cricket Club for an afternoon of friendship through music. We were delighted to present Shane with a cheque for £1,000 for his chosen charity, Velindre Cancer Care. As our wedding schedule and community engagement continues, we were honoured to have been invited back to another packed house at this year’s Porthcawl Truck Gathering in Sandy Bay on 8th August. New members are welcome (see 'What's On') for rehearsal information.

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

We ended the school year in typical PCS fashion - with a lot of extra-curricular activities. We also celebrated another successful school show, ‘West Side Story’, an outstanding production which was incredibly well received by the local community. Many thanks to everyone involved. Thanks to Dan Minto for the terrific photographs. Years 7-10 competed in our annual Sports Day, this was a true community event, held on site, and once again records were broken. Congratulations to winning house, Blue who beat Black by just one point! Many congratulations also to our top athletes, Ottilie Hollenbach, Joel Roberts and Roman Jackson, and our record breakers Liza Heletko, Rowan Green and Chloe Dunster.

We have held our annual, whole school Tennis Competition with lots of matches and play offs. Thank you to the PE department for organising this. In June, Year 8 enjoyed a Careers & WorkRelated Experiences Event supported by local businesses providing insight, advice and guidance for the future. We have also completed several DofE Expeditions: I am so pleased we can offer this to our pupils. We ended the term with rewards assemblies, recognising positive learning and being ‘Ready to Learn’ – well done to all prize winners! As I write, the summer term draws to a close, and we look forward to the new term ahead. We look forward to seeing KS4 and KS5 pupils on results days and sharing in your success. To the whole Porthcawl community, thank you once again, I wish you all a wonderful summer.

A MAGICAL TERM OF MINIBEASTS AT NOTTAGE PRIMARY NURSERY Our Nursery learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Nestled in beautiful grounds, our nursery places outdoor play and exploration at the very heart of every child’s experience, nurturing curiosity, wellbeing and a deep connection with nature. This term has been no exception, as our youngest learners have fully immersed themselves in our fascinating topic of minibeasts.

Our interest with minibeasts has been led by the children, capturing their awe and wonder at every stage.

They have watched with excitement as our class caterpillars transformed into butterflies and to encourage their return, the children enjoyed planting a beautiful butterfly garden.

As part of this learning journey, the children organised a wonderful caterpillar wedding party in the forest - complete with music, dancing, decorations and a woodland tea party.

They even went on minibeast hunts to invite their tiny guests, bringing imagination, curiosity and outdoor learning together in a truly magical way.

WEST PARK PRIMARY ROUNDUP As another successful school year draws to a close, we have much to celebrate across our West Park community. From enriching school visits and sporting successes to fundraising events and exciting topics, 2025-26 has been a year full of opportunity, progress and growth.

This article is dedicated to the retirement of Mr Dennis, whose dedication and service over 3 decades have had a profound impact on generations of children, families and staff at West Park. Throughout his career, he has been a constant source of support, encouragement and inspiration, helping our pupils and staff alike to believe in themselves, value their wellbeing and achieve their best.

One of Mr Dennis’ greatest passions has always been sport, particularly rugby. Through his enthusiasm for the game, he has taught lifelong lessons that extend far beyond the sports field.

This term, pupils, staff, governors and former colleagues came together to celebrate his achievements, share memories and thank him for his outstanding service. Our parents also gave generously their well wishes and gratitude. While we will dearly miss him, we wish him a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.

NOTTAGE NEWS – END OF YEAR UPDATE As we close the 2025–26 academic year, we reflect on what has been an exciting and successful time for Nottage Primary School.

This year has been full of memorable achievements. Our pupils have excelled in sporting competitions, particularly in rugby and netball. We are especially proud as a Year 3 pupil has been accepted into the Royal Ballet School.

A major highlight was being awarded gold status as a Rights Respecting School – a fantastic recognition of our shared values and commitment to children’s rights.

We say a heartfelt farewell to our Year 6 pupils as they move on to the next stage of their education, and we wish them and their families every success for the future. Their production of the Lion King to finish the year was outstanding, well done to you all.

We also say goodbye and good luck to Mrs Smerdon, who is leaving teaching, and to Miss Thomas and Miss Creedon as they take up opportunities in new schools.

Following the success of this year’s residential trips and Campout, we plan to offer similar exciting experiences. A wide range of visits/visitors and workshops across the school years will also continue.

We wish everyone a wonderful summer break and look forward to welcoming pupils back on 2nd September 2026.

NEWYDDION PONT IAITH

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS

Pont Iaith is the Welshlanguage Late Immersion Provision for BCBC. It allows learners from Years 1 to 7 who wish to transfer from Englishmedium to Welsh-medium education to be immersed in the language before moving to their new school full-time. The provision is based at Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr and is accessible to new learners who register at a Welshmedium schools across BCBC. Pont Iaith has supported 10 learners on their journey to bilingualism since September. Seven learners have transferred to Welsh-medium education. The remaining learners are undertaking a gradual transition period and will transfer fulltime next year. Moving schools and changing the language of learning is a significant step; therefore, the programme is tailored to individual learners’ needs.

Esmè-leigh attended Pont Iaith after expressing a growing desire to attend a Welsh-medium school. Her mother, Nikki, was hesitant at first, but her advice to other parents is simple: "I would tell them not to be hesitant; it will be the best thing you could do for your child. If you're thinking about it, just do it."

Esmè-leigh’s own reflection is even more heartfelt: "Do it because it’s made me so happy."

Summer is finally here, and we have had an action-packed end to the school year!

In the last week, we celebrated our end-of-year extravaganza, Hoodwinked. The entire production—from the lighting and sound to the props and backdrops—was led by our talented pupils. As always, we were incredibly proud of the wide range of talents on display. The acting, singing, and dancing were outstanding, while our lighting, sound, and stage crew did a fantastic job behind the scenes. We are sure we will all be singing the songs for the rest of the summer!

As the school year comes to an end, we will also be saying goodbye to our legendary Year 6 pupils. It is always an emotional time, but we are so proud of everything they have achieved during their time at PPS. They have brought smiles to our faces every day and have continually impressed us with their talent, kindness, and enthusiasm. Everyone at PPS wishes our Year 6 pupils the very best of luck as they begin their exciting new adventures. We know they will continue to shine, and they will always be part of the PPS family.

FEATURES NEW FACES AT KENFIG

After 5 years of valuable service to the Nature Reserve, our warden Chris Jones has moved on to pastures new.

Our new warden is Jasmine James, who is local and knows the Reserve well. She has a Masters degree in Animal Biology and previously worked as a Ranger in Bryngarw Country Park, at Llanelli Wetlands , and as a Research Intern for the Sea Watch Foundation in Pembrokeshire. Jasmine says she is really excited to get stuck in and meet everyone!

Our new Trust Manager is Jack James. Jack brings to the Trust his extensive experience in organisational leadership, governance, fundraising, partnership development and environmental stewardship. Jack says he is committed to helping ensure that Kenfig remains a thriving nature reserve and valued community asst for generations to come.

We have also have three new Trustees: well known local birder Colin Baker, Porthcawl naturalist Paul Smith, and Bridgend based school administrator Rachel Densley Lucy Jones volunteers at weekends, manning reception while staff are off duty. Lucy has a degree in Biology but says she has not had the chance to make use of it, so volunteering at such a special ecosystem is the perfect way for her to get back to doing what she loves.

ST. JOHN’S SUMMER FAYRE ON THE GREEN The Sun shone until the Fayre was over, a lovely breeze cooled everyone just enough and most importantly you the people came along and enjoyed. Our thanks as always to you all, also our kind sponsors, donations of over twenty raffle prizes, donations from very kind people, and of course all who helped on the day from first thing to the end. Our entertainment was first class as usual, thank you people. Refreshments in the schoolroom amazing, bell ringers, organists, flower guild for decorating our lovely church. We can’t thank everyone who contributed enough and a figure of over £8000 has been raised to help restore, maintain and look after the 800-year-old most iconic building in the town, may God bless you all.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PORTHCAWL During our prayer walk for peace (second Saturday of the month) we joined together to hold before God all those affected by conflict and injustice across the world today.

We marked Sea Sunday with an outdoor event at Cosy Corner: featuring a performance by Choirs for Good, a reading about the Good Samaritan and reflections from two speakers: Jackie Walters from our local Coastwatch tower; and Zoe Davis (pictured, with Mark Worrall) - Deputy Harbourmaster for Associated British Ports. Sea Sunday is our chance to remember all who work at sea – transporting goods that we rely on every day. We took time to pray for the thousands of seafarers trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, andgave thanks for the Mission to Seafarers who support ships’ crews across the world. Closer to home, we also gave thanks and prayed for the work of our Lifeguards, the RNLI and the National Coastwatch Institution – for all they do to keep us safe along the South Wales coast.

In our monthly beach clean around Coney Beach/Salt Lake, we were happy to welcome other groups of volunteers, including several from Welsh Water.

It’s always a blessing to work in partnership and to make a positive contribution to our local community. All are welcome at our events, whatever your faith background – or none.

PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB Kelly Williams the Senior Caseworker for Bridgend County Care & Repair Team for the 50+ (Helping Hands) visited the Porthcawl Stroke Club and provided us with knowledge of what services they cover overall.

I had a caseworker and her name was Gemma Owen who was amazing, nothing was too much trouble, and they couldn’t do enough for you.

Very professional and highly trained, and the young men with her were highly professional and caring to.

This is a very special service within the County Borough as they provide essential areas that older people need help on.

They cover Safety & Security, fit locks, install chains on doors etc. Electrical, all aspects of electrical work Carpentry & Joinery repairs, maintenance, assemble flat pack furniture, put up a washing line etc. and plumbing replace and repair radiators, leaks etc, plus other areas such as welfare benefits checks and financial advice.

This was great information for the Porthcawl Stroke Club members, and it’s great to know that such a service is available, to them. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kelly Williams and for all the hard-working workers in this organisation. A big thank you to them all.

NEWTON PORTHCAWL WI

Our July WI meeting was packed with celebrations, laughter and friendship. The evening began as we celebrated the 80th birthdays of three lovely ladies. Each were presented with a beautiful orchid and a delicious birthday cake, making it a memorable occasion.

Our guest speaker was the talented freelance actress and storyteller, Debra John, who entertained us with a delightful performance. Dressed as an upper-class housemaid from a grand Edwardian household, she remained in character throughout, vividly describing her daily duties while weaving in wonderfully witty observations about her employers, fellow servants and life ‘above and below stairs’. Her performance even brought to mind the classic comedy sketch I Know My Place.

Debra’s humour, storytelling and brilliant characterisation had us completely captivated and laughing from start to finish!

There was plenty more fun with our raffle, although one elusive ticket caused a moment of good-natured confusion! The beachthemed table competition was a huge success, with members showing great imagination and creativity. Congratulations to all our worthy winners.

To round off a perfect evening, we enjoyed homemade shortbread, tea and coffee, a delicious treat. Now we’re eagerly looking forward to our summer trips.

ROTARY BRIDGEND At their Handover Dinner recently, Tony Berrow was elected President of Rotary Bridgend for the coming year.

Sonja Cain was elected President elect and Brian Murrell became President nominee.

Tony takes over from the last President, Paul Cheadle. During Paul’s year Rotary Bridgend celebrated its centenary. The Charity chose to support the Heronsbridge School, Y Bont and Y Bethan Newydd, the palliative care unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital as part of its celebrations.

All members of Rotary give their time freely, giving service to their local community. By combining skills and resources, members of Rotary Bridgend make a real contribution to the lives of others.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

Churches are often quiet through August. The children are off school and families are on holidays. In fact, many people are making the most of any good weather to enjoy the attractions and special events on offer around us. But Churches are not closed or inactive. While many mid-week activities take a break until September the Sunday Services continue with the rhythm of weekly Christian worship that goes back thousands of years.

What times does your local church gather for worship? Have you ever thought of joining them? The congregation may be large or small, the building old or modern, the time early or late in the day, and the style of worship contemporary or traditional, but there is always a welcome.

Which is the right church for you? Like different restaurants different churches suit different tastes. Some like to worship loudly others quietly. Some are very serious about spiritual things and others more focused on acts of social service.

Perhaps we need to try out a few to ‘taste and see’ which one meets our needs.

Jesus sets us a great example, ‘on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue as was his custom’ (Luke 4:16) Why not come to church this summer?

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI NEWS It has been an extremely busy month with our WI having a tabletop sale at the local fete ‘Party on the Pitch’ that took place on the 20th of June. This event was the first of many being provided by Kenfig Hill and Pyle Community Council during their community week. It was an excellent fete well organised and supported locally. We as an organisation made some money for our funds. Our walking group, scrabble group and luncheon club have met during June, and we submitted articles to the WI craft show and were successful in two classes gaining a second and a highly recommended.

Four members attended the AGM at Maesteg Town Hall. It was a wonderful day with enthusiastic, inspirational speakers and helpful stewards.

Today 4 new members were welcomed at our meeting, and our presenter was Ronnie Kershall, from ‘Lotus Sisters’, who gave us a talk on the history of Belly Dancing and information on the interpretation of the movements and dress of the dancers. Some members joined in the demonstration and the session was truly enjoyed by all.

In August we are off on our annual summer trip, our next meeting being on Tuesday September 8th at 2pm at the Talbot Community Centre with another interesting speaker in attendance. All are welcome.

FEATURES PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS At our AGM in June our President MEL took on another year for the 10th time, Dee Richardson was appointed Club treasurer again (lost count!) and all the committee stayed on for another year. We gave our yearly reports of our social events and monies going out to local charities.

Sadly, we lost two loved members, stated in our report - Janice and Liz, and have not been able to, as yet recruit any new members. We look forward to a new year of fun and friendship.

We started with a lunch at The Grove where we held a quiz between Inner Wheel and Rotary with Sandra as our Quiz Master, and we welcomed our new Mayor Martin Rock.

We are all proud of our family no more so than member Suzanne whose Grandson Gareth 34 won bronze and silver medals at Taekwondo at the Open championship in Cardiff. Well done Gareth.

We wish all clubs in District 15 a Happy New Inner Wheel Year.

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD NEWS Unfortunately the visit from the puppies in July didn’t materialise and had to be postponed. The reason being the weather was hot and the puppies welfare had to be the number one priority. When this was announced it was a pleasure to note that member's nodded in agreement, proving once again we are a nation of animal lovers. On the plus side there was no need to undertake the threatened large bag search.

No meeting in August but we have organised a “reunion’ and decided that members would enjoy indulging in a natter over afternoon tea. Couple that with the tour of the BBC that was undertaken in late July has ensured our members didn’t suffer withdrawal symptoms. We will return to our scheduled routine of a speaker at the monthly meeting commencing September.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month, and our venue is in the Grove Golf Club at 2.00pm. If you would like to come along, we would be delighted to see you and we would most certainly make you feel welcome. Do come and visit us and sample our TG hospitality. It will give you the opportunity to mingle with members over coffee and biscuits.

PORTHCAWL ROTARY WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT Members of Porthcawl Rotary Club gathered at the Atlantic Hotel for the Club's annual Presidential Handover, where Rotarian Rob Aubrey was officially welcomed as President for the coming Rotary year.

Rob is no stranger to the role, having previously served as President in 2016, and has been an active and dedicated member of the Club for many years.

The evening began with a warm welcome from outgoing President Dr Alison Thomas, who greeted members and honoured guests before reflecting on a successful year in office. Alison expressed her sincere thanks to fellow Rotarians for their support throughout her presidency.

Taking office, President Rob Aubrey thanked Alison for her hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to the Club over the past year. He said he was honored to lead Porthcawl Rotary once again and looked forward to another successful year of service to the local community.

Mary Emment-Lewis, President of Porthcawl Inner Wheel, also offered her congratulations and wished Rob every success in his new role. Rob then welcomed and congratulated PresidentElect John Hodges.

The evening was filled with friendship, laughter and good humour, providing a fitting start to another year for Porthcawl Rotary Club.

PORTHCAWL LIONS The annual children’s sand sculpture competition is planned to take place on Coney Beach on 25th of August provided the Council gives permission. Posters around the town and posts on Facebook will keep you updated with final details. The event is completely free, and small prizes will be awarded.

In response to a lot of interest, the club has also reinstated the book stall in John Street on some fine Saturdays, but the location has changed to outside Boots. To keep the event thriving, donations of paperback fiction books are needed so if you have any of these books that would like to donate Don (01656 857916) would be delighted to hear from you.

In September Porthcawl Lions are hoping to start bingo afternoons at the YMCA on Wednesdays. There will be more information in next month’s Seaside News.

One way Porthcawl Lions are intending to use some of the money you generously donate is by providing critical bleed kits to local schools. These kits provide the best specialised dressings for a variety of wounds, from chopping the vegetables-and finger-too enthusiastically to head wounds etc.

HISTORY AUGUST 1964 - HOLIDAYS

By 1964 holiday destinations for working people had extended beyond two weeks at the seaside in Britain to a fortnight in Europe, or even further afield. At the top end of the scale were cruises on luxury liners like the SS Canberra (pictured, Wikipedia). At 45,000 tons, the SS Canberra was the largest vessel to pass through the Panama Canal, to date.

In 1957 British European Airways introduced flights to Alicante and by 1964 many British people were taking the opportunity to broaden their horizons. They soaked up the Spanish sunshine, absorbed the culture and delighted in the local food.

Back home, Paella and Tortilla Española joined fish and chips, and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding on the weekly menu.

Ferries offered a cheaper way of reaching the Continent.

With their camping gear packed, families headed for France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland. Camping clubs boomed, and regular camping exhibitions prepared the campers for the next holiday season.

Those who preferred to holiday at home ventured to holidays camps run by Butlins, Pontins and Warners. They also enjoyed caravan holidays and the homely comforts of a family-run bed and breakfast.

In 1964 approximately 40 million people enjoyed a traditional British seaside holiday. However, a further 5 million Brits travelled abroad, and that number would grow to 10 million as the decade progressed.

When J T Dare died in 1919 his children continued to work in or around the business. The elder brother, Edmund Graham Dare, moved to Port Talbot where he continued the family tradition as a master baker. The youngest son, Jack Dare, carried on the business in Porthcawl as a miller, baker and confectioner until he retired in 1945. In the years between the wars, he operated a mill in the ‘Old Power House’ at the back of Hillsboro Place. Interestingly, it was here c1890, that James Brogden generated electricity for the Esplanade Hotel.

Another brother Hubert married Gwendoline Comley whose family’s catering business was opposite Dare’s in John Street. (pic) Finally, daughter Louie, ran Louie’s Café, on the Esplanade (Asiad today) until the late 50’s. (pic) Another daughter Edith was to make a name for herself in a totally different field. Nursing and Midwifery. After training at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Edith entered Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital in 1911. Following WW1, where she served in Malta, 1915-16, with the Queen’s Alexander Imperial Nursing Service, she returned to Queen Charlotte’s whereupon she became Matron in 1921 until her retirement in 1947. Today Edith Dare O.B.E. is remembered there through the Edith Dare Postnatal Ward.

They did their very first quiz night a few weeks ago and raised an impressive £230. They are going to make the quiz night a regular event now so stay tuned for their socials pages and you’ll be able to find out when they’re taking place. The next one is the 23rd July.

You can still get tickets for our 10th Anniversary charity ball in October. We are looking for raffle prizes and auction prizes so if anyone has something they can donate, we would appreciate it. We also need volunteers for the night so if you are free on the night of the 24th October down in The Bear in Cowbridge we would appreciate it.

We all have that one drawer usually in the kitchen where we place items that do not have an obvious home elsewhere. Then one day we try to open the drawer, and it is jammed and we take time to figure out what is causing the blockage pausing for a moment to gently ease it open.

Looking inside and we realise there are things there that no longer serve us and we throw them away and order is restored Then deciding we will never put random bits in there again. Mmmmm, maybe!

Most days we continue to fill our minds with thoughts that do not encourage us or make us happy. We also allow other people to deposit their thoughts and opinions in there as well. We never realise our mind is full and when it feels stuck, we scroll or watch TV filling it up with more doom and fear.

Time to pause and ease the blockage. Notice your thoughts, select one that does not serve you and let it go. Step into nature, look up at the birds, sky and stars and realise that you are part of this wonder and allow the beauty to flow into your mind.

The children being discussed were children in the care system. Many of these "surplus" children live in Bridgend. This emotionless business language is used to make it easier to ignore the inquisitive, beautifully curious faces of this "surplus" – the children.

I have fostered beautifully curious children in Bridgend for almost a decade. Short term, long term and respite care for children aged between 6 weeks and 19 years old. My young son has done this with me, welcoming and accepting children in and sharing part of their journey with them.

THE POWER OF BELONGING (CYNEFIN) Over the past few months, I've had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people through CYNEFIN Yoga. What began as an idea to create welcoming spaces where people could move, breathe and connect, has grown into something far more meaningful than I could ever have imagined.

We've welcomed complete beginners taking their very first yoga class, runners discovering the benefits of recovery through movement, families practicing together, and people who never believed yoga was "for them."

WHEN FOOTBALL HURTS – DOMESTIC ABUSE & SPORTING EVENTS Major football events can be an exciting time for many people, bringing together millions of fans to support their national teams. The World Cup took place last month and is one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events. For domestic abuse victims however, it can be a time of fear, anxiety and harm behind closed doors.

In 2025, it was estimated that 3.8 million people aged 16 and over in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse.

During football matches, the number of victims increase by 26% if England play, 38% if England lose and 11% the next day, regardless of the outcome of the match.

The existing abusive behaviours of a perpetrator can be triggered by the heightened emotions, alcohol consumption, and stress that football can bring. However, sporting results should never be used as an excuse for abuse.

A victim should not suffer in silence and should seek help.

There are various legal routes to obtain protection for both a victim of domestic abuse and their children. For example, it is possible to apply for an injunction to protect both the victim and the victim’s home, or a Child Arrangements order to protect the children.

Water early or late to reduce evaporation and add a fresh layer of mulch if borders are drying out. Keep feeding flowering plants weekly with a highpotash fertiliser to prolong blooms. Please recycle household water wherever possible and water plants at the roots, sprinklers and hoses use lots of water and do not necessarily get to the parts of your plants where it is most needed.

Deadhead roses, dahlias and annuals to keep colour going. Cut back faded perennials such as hardy geraniums to encourage fresh growth. Tie in tall plants and climbers before they flop in summer breezes. In the veg patch, harvest runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes and early potatoes regularly to keep plants productive. Continue successional sowing of salads, spinach and spring onions for autumn crops. Keep tomatoes evenly watered to avoid blossom end rot and remove yellowing leaves for better airflow. Lawns may slow down in dry weather, so mow less often and raise the blades. Watch for aphids, whitefly and slugs, dealing with them early to prevent damage.

SEA & SPORT PORTHCAWL RNLI VOLUNTEER RECEIVES BEM

Ian Stroud, Chair of Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat Management Group was recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours and awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) after decades of dedicated service.

A stalwart of the lifesaving community in South Wales, Ian has been a RNLI volunteer for more than 34 years. Serving first as a crew member at Porthcawl between 1986 to 1992.

After retiring as sea going crew Ian was Porthcawl’s Lifeboat Press Officer for 25 years promoting real life rescue stories carried out by the volunteer crew, supporting fundraising and sharing safety messages.

Alongside this role, Ian was appointed as a Launch Authority and was responsible for authorising the launch of the station’s lifeboats.

Lifesaving has always been in Ian’s blood. He qualified as a Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) voluntary lifeguard on the beach in Porthcawl at the age of 31. Ian served as a member of Porthcawl Lifeguard Club for over 20 years, teaching lifesaving skills and becoming an examiner.

Beyond his RNLI volunteering, Ian has played a pivotal role in the Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim for 23 years, ensuring the event is well publicised and raising over £175,000 for charities in South Wales.

All at Porthcawl RNLI are incredibly proud of Ian on this welldeserved recognition.

FISH NET ZERO BEACH CLEANS

If you are wondering why we clean beaches, look at these two photos side by side… a very depressing before and a relief after. They were taken by Neptune's Army of Rubbish Cleaners - N.A.R.C. on our latest outing in St Brides Bay, Pembroke. Our main target this outing was lobster pots because they not only pollute the ocean bed and tear it up, but they also continue to kill long after they have been lost. The unsuspecting souls go in for the food only to be trapped and then become food for the next victim who crawls in. Amongst the discarded pots other sad sights were also witnessed. Our divers found this fan coral choked in discarded fishing line. The coral was freed after painstakingly unwrapping it from its plastic straitjacket. This would have been an incredible feat of patience on land but was a tense operation 15 meters deep, with barely adequate visibility, while being buffeted by the ocean’s currents.

Sadly this wasn’t a unique situation. Every time our divers go out, most of their finds are fishing related. So, every time you tuck into a lobster or crab dish remember how cruel the capture process is for these incredible marine animals. Maybe, spare a thought for those out there in lost and abandoned pots slowly starving to a totally pointless death…we only get to save a tiny percentage of them.

That’s why beach cleans are so vital. Sealife is vulnerable to all the toxic rubbish abandoned in the water from both leisure and commercial fishing. The least we can do is try to prevent any further unnecessary contamination.

Surf life saving is a very diverse sport and can offer something to suit everyone! At Rest Bay we provide high quality surf life saving, swimming, ocean and beach training.

If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have lots of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.

Nippers are aged between 7-13. As a Nipper, your child will be taught surf safety, first aid, surf and beach sports such as wading, surf swimming, board paddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays.

Our Youth section is between the age of 13-18. During the summer months we train at Rest Bay beach, and also at Pyle Swimming pool throughout the year.

Our focus is to teach our youth how to save lives.

Lots of youth members also like to compete in regional, national and international competitions. Our youth section also train to become Lifeguards and carry out voluntary patrols as part of our training programme.

Our aim is to provide the lifeguards of tomorrow with training to help keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying our wonderful beaches.

During the heatwaves in June and July, Porthcawl RNLI were extremely busy with multiple launches of the charity’s inshore lifeboats. Thursday 25 June was the busiest day the station has ever had with 11 launches to separate incidents.

Most launches during these heatwaves were to assist people on inflatable paddleboards struggling either in strong easterly offshore winds or strong tidal currents. So far in 2026 Porthcawl RNLI has assisted over 40 paddleboarders to safety.

Porthcawl RNLI’s water safety officer Ian Cole said: “It’s really important to check conditions and tide times before visiting the coast, if the wind is offshore don’t go paddleboarding or use inflatables.

If you can, always go with a friend and tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back. Visit a lifeguarded beach during lifeguard patrol hours. Wear a buoyancy aid when paddleboarding and take a means to call for help such as a mobile phone (in a waterproof case).”
