SALTBURN’S TOWN TALK Letter from the Editor

Working on T alk of the Town keeps me busy and gives me a sense of purpose, provides me with some degree of fulfilment and a feeling that I’m doing something worthwhile. I don’t think too deeply about what I’m trying to achieve but I do question sometimes why I’m doing it at all. People often say to me that I must enjoy it, but I always wonder whether that is true, and often answer “ Yes, on balance,” whatever that might mean. Writing this letter from the editor is usually the last thing I do to complete the magazine before giving it to the printer after a long and difficult ‘deadline weekend.’ The final process is full of unnecessary complications, aggravations, irritations and stress (everything takes so long and every single article and advert has problems and decisions to be made), so I approach this letter, not with a feeling of triumph and Amnesty Inte rnational Night: Justin and Jay would like to say a massive thank you on behalf of 4 People Not Profit, to Brigit’s Mantle, DJ Marc Fox, and everyone who helped out, donated prizes and turned up for the Amnesty International Fundraiser at the Marine on Friday, 19th October. It was a great night we raised over £250! Thanks Everyone!

Saltburn District U3A: An autumn Lunch Party was held at Marske, Cheshire Home on Friday, 26th October. Lunch was pie and peas followed by a quiz by Bryan Clare, testing members’ knowledge of the North Yorkshire Moors. On Sunday, 28th October, Judith Munroe led a group of thirty members on a short break to Rydal Water in the Lake District. Ambleside U3A have agreed to organise a walk for Saltburn members.

The next Coffee Morning will be held on Friday 2nd November, 10.00am - 12.00 Noon, in Saltburn Community Centre. If you are over fifty, retired or semi retired come and join us and find out about the courses on offer.

Alan Cotterill The Guisborough and District Branch of the Embroide re rs' Guild are holding their monthly meeting on Saturday, 3rd November at 1.45pm in Sunnyfield House, Westgate, Guisborough. T he speaker is the author Isobel Hall, originally from Guisborough now living in Spain. The title of her talk is "Paper Bags". She has recently had her book "Bags with Paper and Stitch" published. Her bags, embellished with print, stitch and beading, are featured in the book and use unusual materials and innovative products. Visitors are welcome including non-sewers, beginners and more experienced stitchers.

Sometimes I want to write an article entitled ‘Stupid, stupid, stupid’ where I have a good old rant against everything I find wrong with the world, but I don’t want to turn the magazine into ‘T alk of the Clown’. I want to keep the utter rubbish that pervades most of our modern society out of the magazine. Television, films, newspapers and politics provide enough infantile entertainment and I would like to set a higher standard, and with a greater degree of responsibility and sense of service. It is those qualities that make Talk of the T own special. Do I enjoy it? Well, yes, on balance. I suppose. In a strange sort of way. Love, Ian.

Unfortunately our guest speaker couldn’t come, but with such versatile ladies we were able to come up with our very own demonstrator, so all was not lost!

Last month our ladies went out on a super outing, first to Helmsley where we had a look round followed by lunch.

Then to Ampleforth Abbey where we were given a tour by a lovely monk - if you can call monks lovely; I'm not sure anyway, he was very nice and so interesting. It certainly is a beautiful place and well worth a visit. Last Monday we were also invited out to Rosedale WI for a fun evening about music halls. It was a good night followed by a lovely supper.

Everyone enjoyed it.

E Leonard The Inner Wheel Club of Saltburn-by-the -Sea: On 25th September we celebrated our 61st birthday at The Spa Hotel.

President Eileen Platten welcomed the guests and introduced her top table. Greetings from No.3 District were given by District Chairman Doreen Peach. Club Member Carol lit the friendship candle and grace was said by Nancy Metcalfe.

We had an enjoyable lunch followed by entertainment from ‘Mes Amis’, a ladies singing trio. Former President Elsie Hibbert gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the Club. At the close of the meeting Flora Collett, a past President at Whitby Club gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the guests.

Another memorable birthday! Our next Coffee Morning is at the Methodist Church Hall, Milton Street on Saturday, 10th November, 10am until 12 noon. We look forward to seeing all of our supporters.

A corner in Old Saltburn

Very much in the local news at the moment is a small building standing on the corner of the road to Brotton opposite the Ship Inn. This is the Mortuary which was built for Brotton Local Board and opened in 1881, the key being available at Mr Temple’s house! The Saltburn Local Board apparently declined to contribute to the cost of building the Mortuary.

The Mortuary was one of three buildings on the site, the nearest to the Ship Inn was the Lifeboat House and sandwiched between the Mortuary and Lifeboat house was the Rocket Brigade building. T he other two buildings were demolished in a road widening scheme leaving the Mortuary standing alone. We were aware that it was in use at least until the late 1960s but a conversation with our retired local undertaker (now known as Funeral Director) Doug Kitchen provided the following information.

The Real Meal’s Food Column by Sheila Beswick

Comfort food on dark November evenings In November, the dull and dismal month, is noted for fog and drizzle. The only bright spot is bonfire night, but as that comes right at the beginning we still have long dark nights to get through before December and the countdown to Christmas and New Year. So can we brighten these dismal evenings with warming comfort food, the kind which brings an inner glow and that all important “feel good” factor? T he answer of course is a resounding “yes”.

And this doesn’t have to mean a great feast. A simple pleasure is to get out the toasting fork (what is that?) I hear younger readers ask. If you don’t have one but you do have an open fire, check out junk shops, flea markets and car boot sales. Chances are that a little persistence will unearth this treasure of bygone days. Then all you need to do is light the fire, close the curtains and dim the lights (dim lighting makes the fireglow so much cosier), buy some crumpets or slice some bread thickly and have really good butter at the ready. I also like a tub of good pâté but this is an optional extra. If you have children or grandchildren a big ba g of marshmallows to toast is great for a special treat, even more so if there is also a small bowl of melted chocolate for them to dip in, and carefully supervised they can do their own toasting from quite a young age.

With an open fire you can also roast chestnuts.

So much nicer than chestnuts roasted in the oven.

When I was a child this was one of the great winter pleasures. We would sit on the floor pricking the chestnuts and then placing them carefully on the shovel and as soon as it was full, balance it carefully on the hot coals and wait eagerly for the moment the first few were cooked. I remember how we jiggled the hot nuts from hand to hand trying to peel them before they had really cooled enough. Years later my own children and I did the same and I think this winter is the time to introduce my granddaughter to the pleasure.

So what else can we do with food on these dark November evenings? Apples are in season now and English apples just cannot be beaten. We really should make the most of them, not simply for their taste and texture, but also for our growers, many of whom are struggling. Why buy French or New Zealand apples when the very best is grown on our own doorstep. I’m not going to advocate cooking these on the fire though.

However, they are the basis for a great many deserts and are also good in soups with parsnip and/or carrots.

T im makes an apple and carrot sauce to eat with pork which is absolutely delicious. Just cook the sliced carrots in very little water and when they are just tender add peeled and slice d Granny Smiths. Boil rapidly to cook the apples and evaporate the water then mash together with butter, salt and pepper. If there is quite a lot of water in the pan when you are ready to add the 6

apples pour some off otherwise the result will be watery and insipid. Excess water cannot really be removed at the end as the apples will have burst and pureed by then.

And of course there are many easy to make puddings based on apples, many of which cry out for a big jug of custard, so much more comforting on a cold winter evening than a pot of cream (much as I love cream). Great big cooking apples cored and the skin slit around the diameter take only minutes to prepare. Stuff the centre hole with sweet mincemeat or dried fruit and nuts add a knob of butter and honey, golden syrup or light Muscovado sugar and pop into the oven whilst you eat your main course. T hey should come out fluffy and your butter and sweetener will have combined with the apple juices to make a delicious caramel, now pour on lashings of hot custard. Real comfort food, and I have not met anybody who does not like baked apples. You simply cannot lose by putting these in front of family and friends.

Lastly a really old fashioned pudding that my grandmother made regularly. Steamed apple pudding.

She used to make it in a tin pudding basin set in a pan of boiling water on the edge of the fire – despite the fact that she had a gas oven in her kitchen. Her pudding wa s filled with just sliced apples and sugar but I like a little lemon zest in mine but is a very easy pudding to make.

My Grandmother’s pudding Pastry 250g self-raising flour 125g suet Pinch of salt A little cold water Filling 450g cooking apples, peeled and sliced 150g sugar, or 2tbsp golden syrup or honey A little lemon zest (optional) 1. Mix flour, suet and salt together and then add water a little at a time to make a soft, but not sticky dough. I find a round bladed knife good to start with but then I get my hands in to finish off.

2. Roll out two thirds of the dough and use to line your greased pudding ba sin. Don’t worry if it breaks. Just squeeze the edges together.

3. Fill with apples, sugar (or honey/syrup) and add lemon zest if using.

4. Roll remaining pastry into lid. Moisten edge of pudding lining with a little water and cover with lid pressing down well to seal.

5. Cover with tin foil or double layer of greaseproof (grandma always used empty butter wrappers).

6. Steam either in a pan of boiling water or in a steamer for 2 hours. T urn out and eat with lashings of custard.

Councillors’ Column At the May local election, three councillors, Joan Sands, John Robinson and Philip Thomson, were returned for Saltburn to the Redcar & Cleveland Council.

The three councillors form part of a minority Group on the Council but hold surgeries every month on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in the Library from 10am until noon to listen to the views of residents.

This column will attempt, on a regular basis, to highlight some of the items that arise from resident requests, your own councillors’ initiatives or Council policy decisions.

Efforts are being made to encourage residents to return their wheelie bins to their premises after collection day. Not all residents are doing this and unfortunately a number of bins left unattended are being set on fire. One recent fire resulted in severe damage to three properties and only narrowly avoided human tragedy by the vigilance of the public and the rapid response of Saltburn Fire Brigade.

More members of the public are being encouraged to join Neighbourhood Watch and play a greater part in neighbourhood policing. The contribution that individual members of the community can make to a safer and stronger community is immense.

Anti social behaviour continues to be a cause for concern. Various approaches to addressing this are being considered. The Youth Club should reopen in November and other opportunities for youth involvement are being developed.

Building on the Saltburn Learning Campus has started

with completion of the secondary school due for 2008.

Concerns about the speed and volume of traffic on Guisborough Road and Marske Mill Lane are being discussed.

Improvements on the Lower Promenade are now to take place, including provision for disabled parking. New waste bins are being purchased for refuse and dog waste.

However, £130,000 earmarked for repairs to the Marine Parade bank has been reallocated to Redcar and car parking charges have been extended to include the winter period!

Instead of the disposal of the Mortuary, it has been requested to incorporate it within the museum service, retaining it as a contribution to Saltburn’s heritage.

Yorkshire, which has been in existence far longer than any of the recent inventive local authorities of Teesside, Cleveland County, Langbaurgh and Redcar & Cleveland, has formally been deleted from our postal address. A referendum, to establish the feelings of the people, has been rejected. When the vote was taken in the Council chamber a recorded vote was requested so that those advocating this decision would be required to stand up and declare their individual support.

Parking is an issue in the town. In requesting a full review of traffic management, it is hoped that solutions will be found to some of the challenges that are presented to visitors and residents. One particular problem is maintaining a clear passage for emergency services.

Boot theme at school harvest service

Nearly 370 children walked over a quarter-of-a-mile to a church service in Saltburn on Monday, October 8th, to “ give poverty the boot.”

The theme of this year’s harvest service was helping to cut poverty in Africa and a ‘welly’ decorating competition was among ideas used to get over points.

Later pupils at the town’s primary school held an outdoor welly-throwing contest to raise money for the Farm Africa charity in Tanzania.

They also auctioned fruit and vegetables given by parents to add to the £371.50 sent.

Pupils walked two-by-two in procession from both the Upleatham Street infants’ base and juniors’ Marske Mill Lane building to the Methodist Church in Milton Street.

New minister the Reverand Chris Eddy told them he had worked in West Africa and asked if they knew what a boy was doing in a painting he held up. T wo hands were raised. Pupils had correctly spotted that the boy was scaring birds off the field so rice could grow.

Pupils sang songs with meanings like harvest was ‘A time to take and a time to give,’ and ‘Thank you God for harvest gifts.”

Among the 20 parents who attended the service Mrs Leigh Wilkinson, of Saltburn, who has a daughter Naomi, four, at Upleatham Street, said she welcomed the African theme.

Mrs Rebecca Prior, also of Saltburn, with a son Isaac, four, in the reception class, said: “It was good to see the children enjoying singing.”

Headteacher Mrs Janet Richardson: “We go to this service because we want to be part of the Saltburn community. We take the children to experience religious festivals.”

She said children led most of the items on the programme. The school also held Easter and Christmas carols services in church.

Huntcliff School, Saltburn, holds its annual Christmas carols service at Emmanuel Church on December 17th with students being involved in readings and performances plus planning the service.

Council café plans After several delays, Redcar and Cleveland Council is hoping to start work later this month on refurbishing the café in Saltburn Valley Gardens to become an all-year round facility in the New Year.

The £72,000 refurbishment work at the café near the Italian Gardens will include double-glazing, cavity wall insulation and new toilet facilities to allow the building to open throughout the year.

The council’s cabinet member for the environment Councillor Sylvia Szintai said: “ It will be an extremely well-used facility and I’m also very pleased that we can use trainees from the Upsall Hall Rural Centre, in 16

collaboration with our Learning Disability Service, to staff the café.”

The project is jointly funded with £46,000 from the regional development agency, One NorthEast and £26,000 from the environmental improvement budget of the Government’s Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

The council announced in March that it hoped the café would be opened by July. In July it said it hoped work would start in September and be completed by the yearend.

Until 2005 the café, a wooden building, was run by a private café business in Saltburn.

Once Upon a Time in the Wapentake by Tim Beswick

November: enough said last month, so no more, November.

Very infrequently we manage to escape from the boundaries of the Wapentake. Here follows a report on one such brief adventure.

Barcelona: direct from Teesside, sorry, Durham/Tees Valley, at little more than it costs for a return ticket on the train to Darlington. Well, that’s the theory; that’s the cost before airport taxes, excess baggage charges etc. And, this being Ryan Air you don’t actually land at Barcelona Airport, but at Gerona, some considerable distance away.

Even so, it’s absurdly cheap, and surely unsustainable.

Perhaps Ryan Air, like some Tesco of the skies will go on undercutting the competition till they’re the only airline left.

Then, of course, they can charge what they like. In the meantime, air travel is an environmental disaster and I can’t justify doing it, except that we have very little time and limited funds and no other way of getting to the places we want to go. Giving up air travel is a bit like giving up smoking, which I’m not very good at either, certainly not in Barcelona where, according to the guidebooks, smoking in restaurants and bars is not permitted, it’s compulsory. Flying like smoking is bad for us and other people too, but there’s always an excuse to indulge just one more time.

And I don’t really enjoy it, flying, I mean, the hanging about at airports, being crammed into a flimsy metal tube with too many other people and breathing in what they have just breathed out. Ideally I’d like to go to Darlington, get on a high-speed train and go all the way to Barcelona – cheaply. It’s technically possible. Why doesn’t it happen?

Enough of this wittering. We got there, Gerona, I mean, and travelled through a landscape of wooded hills, almost like a Chinese print, with the occasional castle or monastery perched on the peak. Barcelona seemed to start a long way out of the city centre: new factories, office blocks, and apartments going up on every available scrap of level ground. However, it was not on the scale of Madrid which we approached by train a few years ago and which seemed to be expanding at a speed not far short of that which the train was going. It’s the Industrial Revolution of course. I grew up thinking that was something that happened centuries ago just in parts of the British Isles, changing the way we lived here, from being overwhelmingly farmers, consuming things we or our neighbours grew and made, into factory workers, making things for far distant markets and consuming things grown ten thousand miles away. It also affected a few other places in Europe, principally parts of Germany and Belgium, and the odd city elsewhere, Barcelona for example. But the real industrial revolution is only just happening now, spectacularly so in China and India, but even in parts of Europe where, until very recently people had clung to their peasant holdings as the ancestors had done for thousands of years. You don’t have to travel up the Yangtze to see the world changing before your eyes.

But here we are, in central Barcelona, staying just off La Ramblas, the most exciting street in the world, they claim, even closer to the biggest market in Europe. And now I can say that one of my motives for coming to Barcelona was because I had been there before, forty years ago, when I was a different person and Barcelona was, I think, a

different city. It struck me then as possibly the grimmest place I had ever been. Barcelona was wide, straight streets lined with tall, shabby grey buildings. It seemed to be no place for humans to live, designed for the convenience of machine gunners rather than for people wanting food and drink and some joy in their life. The machine gunners were there too: half a dozen different kinds of paramilitary police, armed to the teeth and ever-present. It seemed the only show in town was the bullfight and that was grim enough. There were glimpses of another stranger city: some very peculiar buildings, but they were as shabby and as derelict as everything else and gone past so fast that I later forgot I’d ever seen them. And there was Sagrada Familia, the weird and wonderful cathedral designed by Gaudi, under construction, already looking like nothing else on earth, but in that time and place it too felt rickety and fake, an attempt to keep medieval superstition going without the benefit of medieval technology or faith.

What was wrong with Barcelona then? Less than thirty years before I first went the Spanish Civil War had come to an end, and Barcelona had been on the losing side. Since 1939 it had been living under a fascist dictatorship, which did not just deny them free speech, free assembly and the other rights that we take for granted, but it denied them the right to be themselves. Barcelona had been for centuries the capital city of a land, a people, a nation sometimes called the Kingdom of Aragon, but more usually known as Catalunya, with its own language, laws and customs. In 1968, when first I was there, Catalunya did not exist: no books could be published, no classes taught in any language but Spanish, or Castilian as it is known in Barcelona.

And now everything is changed. Barcelona is once again the seat of the Generalitat, the Catalan Government, which amongst other things runs a police force, which seems to consist of smiling but rather scruffy young men and women, very different from the hard-faced storm troopers of the dictatorship. The weird and wonderful buildings are restored to their original glory and Sagrada Familia is now racing ahead with the help of modern technology. At the present rate of progress they should be finished in less than three hundred years. It’s no longer just about religion; it’s about Barcelona letting the world know that they’re different.

There are no bullfights in Barcelona any more; they are illegal, one of the very few things that are, it seems. The city is a lively, youthful, creative place, twenty-four hours a day and the food is excellent and cheap. Barcelona beach is a good place to sit and watch the Mediterranean and drink freshly squeezed orange, particularly impressive as twenty years ago there was no beach. What there was then was four kilometres of industrial dereliction, which has been removed and replaced by thousands of tons of golden sands, rocks and palm trees. It seems that everything is possible now.

It’s perhaps difficult for us to realise that politics matters when in our country it seems to be about choosing between three parties with identical policies whose only real argument is over whose leader has the nicest smile and the trendiest ties. But for many in this world still there are real choices and real differences. If they can change the way they are ruled then everything changes and life can be worth living.

About 200 parents visited Huntcliff school, Saltburn, for the first-ever open evening to see “the school in action.”

Activities on display included a dance/exercise routine in the gym, a clarinet ensemble playing and graphs on display in the geography classroom.

Student Joe Cockerline, 16, said the results of a survey he did among visitors to Saltburn would show that litter and traffic pollution were putting them off.

He spent an afternoon during the summer holidays interviewing 29 visitors. “ Noise from traffic in the town centre and on the main road made a tremendous difference to visitors’ experiences,” he said.

Parent Geoff Harrington, of Wilton Bank, Saltburn, who took his 10-year-old son Ben to the event, said he was impressed at the French teacher teaching in French.

lesson in French,” he said.

Mrs Julia Legg, of Willow Close, Saltburn, who took her daughter Sophie, 10, to look round, said: “The exhibition was very impressive.”

Head teacher Ruth Headdon said: “The atmosphere was lovely with more than half our students helping together with our staff. It’s a wonderful school to work in.”

She told parents that a lot of work was done to help pupils in the transition period from primary school to secondary school. Huntcliff was increasing its links with primary schools, the wider community and with families.

On Friday, October 5th Huntcliff School held a nouniform day Jeans for Genes in aid of a charity which supports work into genetics problems. The school also supports Red Nose Day and three other charities, which the school council decides on.

Dogs and soccer don’t mix A mixture of dogs and football is ending at a Saltburn public space where a two metre high steel fence is being put up.

The green steel mesh barrier is being dug in at the Hob Hill football pitch because it is officially becoming a playing field for the new £16million super school now being constructed to replace Huntcliff School.

Soon the fence will be dug in all round the school site.

The fenced-off football field means that Sunday morning public soccer is safe, but dog-owners won’t have so much space for exercising their pets.

Phil Maidens, who runs Saltburn FC men’s team, said they had reached agreement with Huntcliff School, soon to be a joint secondary-and-primary school learning campus, about using the pitch on Sunday mornings. “ Banning dogs will save us a job of cleaning up mess. It’s not too bad a problem, but there are a few messes every week. Most dog-walkers respect the fact that this is a football pitch,” he said.

campus, said a 10-year agreement had been signed with the football club. The club would pay a nominal fee for the school cutting the grass and lining the pitch.

He said the existing industrial-type steel fence which separates the public field from the present school’s grounds would remain. T he new mesh fence would be “ less obvious, but just as effective.”

East Cleveland Area Environment Committee Redcar and Cleveland Council’s East Cleveland Area Environment Committee was told that £35,000 funding had been found from council sources to revamp public toilets in Saltburn’s railway buildings.

“We have got funding, but it is improbable the work will be completed in time for the Christmas lights,” said council official Gary Flynn after the meeting.

He said two options were available for the council to decide on - changing the men’s toilets into one for disabled people and adding a men’s section to the ladies; or leaving the men’s, after improvements, and adding disabled toilets to the ladies section.

Saltburn councillors told the meeting how pleased they were that eight years of ‘banging on’ about the conveniences by elected representatives and community campaigners was at last coming to fruition.

Meanwhile, on the lower promenade at Saltburn, newstyle joint litter and dog mess bins are to be put out next spring.

Councillors voted three-three about when they should be installed, chairman Councillor John Robinson using his casting vote to opt for a spring date - “ by Easter, 2008” (March 23rd is Easter Sunday).

Other items reported at the meeting were: Saltburn smell: a complaint of odour coming from Saltburn beck near the bridge at the bottom of Saltburn bank was investigated. It was reported that the stream’s

flow had not been affected. T he smell was found to be present when the tide was in, said Councillor John Robinson.

Questions: during a question-time session, residents complained about a wide range of subjects.

They included: grafitti at Marske (“the town is mad with grafitti” with new marks being put at Black Bridge and at the back of the new town centre toilets); fears of litter bins being set on fire in the run-up to November 5th; party noise at Boosbeck; hedges not being cut because of birds nesting; litter on railway lines at Saltburn station; and offroad motorcyclists in Errington Woods, New Marske.

Disabled ramps: problems of motorists parking near ramps for disabled people at Saltburn were raised by Councillor Philip T homson. “The biggest culprits are those with disabled ba dges,” he said.

Cemeteries: the council plans to restrict the number of dogs to three per owner visiting cemeteries.

The next meeting will be held at North Skelton Village Hall, Vaughan Street, North Skelton, on Wednesday, November 7th at 6pm. All welcome.

Saltburn welcomes Felicia Young people in the Saltburn area have given a warm welcome to Felicia Mandy, 24, who has swapped the hot climate of her Gambian home for the windswept resort. “ It’s cold here,” was the first reaction of the voluntary worker in the Emmanuel Anglican parish, who is spending a year helping with youth activities, the church shop and general parish work.

But she was pleased at the welcome given by youngsters from Saltburn Primary School when parish youth worker Mark Brown introduced her at an assembly.

“The evening after I met the kids one of them gave me a ‘Hi, Felicia!’ greeting, as suggested by Mark. It was great to get this welcome,” she said later.

Felicia follows Trinidad and Tobago-born Rhonda Smith, as a Careforce volunteer for a year in Saltburn. “ It’s cold here, but people are friendly. I’m trying lots of different English dishes like fish and chips and chicken. I like things with a bit of spice,” she said.

Felicia, who has two brothers and a sister, works as a clerk of works on a construction site in her home country T he Gambia.

Parking problem

A parking ‘concern’ in Saltburn has been sent by Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council to Cleveland Police.

The ‘blackspot’ is in Albion T errace, Saltburn, at the junction with Windsor Road, both outside the community theatre and the estate agents.

Councillors are also concerned about opening hours at Saltburn police station and have contacted the police about this.

District commander Superintendent S. Swinson is due to attend the November 12th council meeting (to which members of the public are welcome). The council meets in a room above the Leisure Centre.

Punch and Judy ‘Professor’ dies

The death has occurred of Billy Lllewellyn, of Newton Aycliffe, who entertained thousands with Punch and Judy at Saltburn in the 1950s onwards.

His son Brian has performed in his place in Saltburn town centre for Saltburn in Bloom and Christmas lights events in recent years. “ He was a delightful guy, always generous, always a gentleman,” wrote Mike Amos in the Northern Echo about ‘Professor’ Billy.

Mastermind: the Saltburn Connection Those who enjoy television quiz shows will recognise that Mastermind has generally had the highest reputation, though there have been a few complaints about ‘dumbing down’, following some of the very populist special subjects that have recently been allowed.

The programme was first started by the BBC in 1972, and hosted by the late Magnus Magnusson until his retirement in 1997. Off the air for several years, it returned to the screen with John Humphries as question-master in 2003. T he present producer of the programme, Jon Kelly, actually grew up in Saltburn, where his mother was licensee of the Alexandra Vaults public house. She now manages the Zetland Arms, also known as the T op House, in Marske. Among the contestants in the present series is Dan O’Hara (seen here in the Saltburn Cliff Lift), who retired to Saltburn in 2000. The programme in which he appears – recorded in Manchester last March – will be shown on Monday, 26th November at 7.30pm on BBC2.

Dan told T alk of the Town: “ I decided to apply again to go on Mastermind last year. I had applied twice before long ago and heard nothing, so I was not too hopeful. But eventually I was invited to an audition in Durham last autumn, and in January I was informed that I was one of 96 out of thousands who had applied, to be selected for the current series. My first choice of special subject was not accepted – perhaps because it would have entailed the question-setters reading several books in German – but they eventually accepted my third choice – the early history of sound recording, 1887-1925. I found it difficult under studio conditions to recall in time some answers that I knew quite well – but I suppose many others find the same. Some contestants, I discovered, had been on the programme several times before, so they probably had an advantage over those for whom it was a new experience. I was amazed that John Humphries still had so much energy at 8.30pm, after a whole day of recording programmes for the series. I felt completely shattered when it was over. I’ve been asked to apply again next year

Dan was not completely new to television quiz shows: in 1999, he was a grand finalist on Channel 4’s ‘Fifteen to One’. He told us: “I was sorry that popular show folded when William G. Stewart retired. I might try Countdown, but that has gone downhill since Richard Whiteley sadly died. In my opinion, it’s nothing like as good as it was!” And what about ‘T he Weakest Link’?

“Wild horses would not get me into the same studio as Anne Robinson.”

Saltburn Remembrance Day Remembrance Day will be mark ed in Saltburn by a servi ce at Emmanuel church on Sunday, November 11th followed by a march and short ceremony at the Cenotaph at about 11am.

Ex-service veterans will join the march - led by Saltburn Army cadets - from the ch urch to the Cenotaph.

The event is being organised by the Royal British Legion. New chairm an Dav e Willis, 60, a former Colour Sergeant with the Coldstream Guards, said the cad ets would fo rm at Somerfields car park at 9.30am to march to the church.

He said the Legion branch was being renamed the Saltburn and District Branch becaus e meetings have been trans ferred from Saltburn to Loftus.

“The branch has about 30 active members, plus others.

Members are v ery enthusiastic and numb ers are going up,” he said.

Saltburn Foreshore Committee Update Whilst drafting this month’s Foreshore Committee update it seemed that, as we have reached the end of another season, it might be appropriate for the update to take the form of a ‘summing-up’ of the group’s achievements to date and plans for the future.

We originally formed as a lobbying/pressure group with the simple aim of ensuring Saltburn’s foreshore (and by extension its users) received the quality of service necessary to keep the resort functioning in line with the council’s ‘Clean, Green and Safe’ agenda. To this end we have had success in achieving recognition from the local authority and in getting local councillors to the negotiating table; we have achieved clarification of the ownership of the foreshore building’s community room and have been successful in negotiating with the council to have the foreshore building recently painted in ‘corporate colours’; we have raised awareness of local issues through our updates and petitions and have achieved recognition from the local authority of the urgent need for dog waste bins within the foreshore area; we have engaged with the local community network and have increased our membership to over 150 through petitioning and our publicising of local concerns.

To shine some light on tasks we are currently undertaking: we are making a formal approach to the Local Authority with regard to the use of the community room; we are developing an SFC logo in partnership with local schools; we are supporting Claire Leonard in her petition regarding car-parking charges on the lower promenade and

we are pleased that the council have finally agreed to the placement of ten combined dog waste/litter bins, again on the lower promenade. A representative of East Cleveland Area Committee has informed us that the new bins will put in situ over the winter, whilst in the meantime refurbished bins and increased ‘No Fouling’ signage will be sited in the period following 1st November 2007.

For the future we plan to make progress in the following areas: the complete opening of the foreshore building, with the community room available to local groups and businesses alike; we shall be working with local groups to establish a local events programme; we will be pushing for strategies devoted to the reduction of antisocial behaviour in the foreshore area and greater enforcement re: dog waste and litter and we hope to work in partnership with the local authority to improve carparking facilities and general management of the foreshore area, eg waste collection, lighting, etc.

By any standards we have had a successful and productive year and finally we would like to welcome our most recent partners Claire Leonard and Boyd Camfield to the Committee. Claire’s tenacity with the parking petition and Boyd’s extensive experience with all matters pertaining to the foreshore and lower promenade have already given us fresh ideas and have taken our Committee in new directions.

On Wednesday, November 21st we have a welcome return visit by Ken Smith a keen ecologist with a presentation “ A Naturalist in South Africa” and on Wednesday, November 28th Irene Crooks and Andrew Jones present “The Underwater World”, photography in an exotic and colourful underwater world.

No ‘Night Club’ at Bankside

A Saltburn beach bar now in the middle of a £400,000 revamp will not be turned into a night club, promised the regional manager of new owners Enterprise Inns.

Stuart Ireland told Talk of the Town: “We are not investing in a night club, but a restaurant and a bar.”

He revealed that following contact with Cleveland Police, the firm was now not seeking a licence to run Bankside, at the bottom of Saltburn bank and near the pier, until 3am, but 2am.

“We bought it from a private operator for its site opportunities. We are spending £400,000 to upgrade it, putting in a new kitchen, toilet and outside eating area,” said Mr Ireland. “It's a lovely new area where people can see the sea, eat, drink and smoke. It will be a restaurant during the day for all ages, targeting older clients. In the evening until 9pm we are targeting families. Dave Stokes (formerly licensee of Saltburn’s Windsor’s bar) is an excellent licensee. We have been in touch with the police and are pulling back the licence application to 2am (from 3am). It is not our intention to be normally open after 1am nor to have people drinking outside (late at night). “ Customers being targeted after 9pm are anyone who would like to visit an hotel - like me aged 54. It will not be a young persons’ venue.”

Mr Ireland said the name of the new bar would be Vista Mar, Spanish for sea view. He did not know if Redcar and Cleveland Council had received any objections to the licence application. The deadline for receiving objections was Friday, October 19th - 28 days after the application was received at the Guisborough office. Details of the application can be seen on notices put up outside Bankside, which used to be called Rosie O'Grady’s.

A Redcar and Cleveland Council spokesman said: “We are in regular dialogue with all licensed premises across the borough and there have been occasions when verbal and written warnings have needed to be given.”

The council’s community protection cabinet member Councillor Dave McLuckie said: “What has become clear is that the vast majority of public houses have not taken to opening their doors into the early hours and are maintaining normal opening and closing times.

“Where this is different is in our town centres, with pubs offering a greater choice to people who wish to go out, but don’t want to go to a nightclub environment.

“This also helps in creating phased finishing times, making it easier for the authorities to deal, instead of having all customers leaving pubs at one time.”

‘Dreary’ precinct and conservation area criticised A Saltburn shopkeep er has criticised the ‘unsightly’ precinct outside the town’s supermarket and the coun cil’s conservation policy for allowing ‘garish plastic signs.’

Andy Hawkins, who runs an art gallery in Milton Street, has sent his criticisms to Redcar and Clevel and Council’s conservation o ffi cer Stewart Ramsd ale following a req uest for comments.

“Though I’ve not received any reply from Mr Ramsdale, I welcome the plan to extend the conserv ation area in Saltburn,” he told Talk of the Town.

“There are man y fin e architectural details throughout the town which des erv e this level o f prot ection. How nice the town looks in the glossy fold-out the coun cil has produced. “ Unfortun ately the reality of walking around Saltburn reveals a di fferent truth, and one which is p ertinent to this document.

“The author states that the area still maintains a strong visual cohesion, and that own ers o f histori c buildings should be encou rag ed to maintain and restore front areas. I wonder what fo rm this encou rag ement might tak e? I telephon ed the planning department with regard to the demolition of a garden, which was duly pav ed over and is now a car p ark and home to several mattress es, but I was told nothing could be done. “ Mr Ramsdale features in one o f th e inset photographs a detail of the station building, surely a prime example o f a building not maintained. And who is responsible for the fen ce opposite the Spar shop in Milton Street?”

Mr Hawkins, who lives in Upleatham Street, an area to be add ed to the conservation area round the town centre, asked: “ If visual cohesion is a priority why are shops allowed to put up garish plastic signs? And should there not be a policy to restrict colours to ones that sit well in the envi ronment colours the Victorians and Edwardi ans might have used.?

Could something be done about the unsightly precinct outside Somerfield, with its dreary plant ers and v andalised telep hone kiosk? What about the lovely old cast-iron canopi es? As for unsympathetic alterations, well just look around every co rner.

What we really need in addition to a conserv ation area is a restoration area!”

Mr Hawkins, who has lived in Saltburn fo r 10 years, is a gradu ate o f the Royal College o f Art. He has press ed for several visual improvem ents to be made in the town centre, including some brickwork to be repl aced, which was don e.

A spokeswom an fo r Saltburn 500 club and Saltburn in Bloom said the precinct was look ed aft er by volunt eers - and more were need ed. She recalled that the raised gardens were cleared up 20 years ago when a group of volunteers toured the town cent re ringing a bell and calling out: “Will you give 10 minutes for Saltbu rn.” The area, which is o wned b y a Lo ndonbased prop erty comp any, was planted with trees, including ‘palm trees’ called cordylines.

Leaflets on the p ropos ed ext ension to the co nservation area - which would restrict developments - can be seen in Saltburn library an d on the council websit e.

Parish councillors hav e criticised Redcar and Clevel and Council for alleg edly not ‘policing’ Saltburn’s present conservation well enough - befo re an extension is approv ed.

Councillor Jim Wingham, of S altburn, Mars ke and New Marsk e Parish Council, said: “ I’m quite happy with the new area, but wish the borough coun cil policed the p res ent area more. He also criticised the state o f the former nurs ery gard en next to the Italian gardens.

Parish Council chairm an Mrs Maureen Jefferso n echo ed her coll eagu e’s comment about policing an d add ed: “ I don't like some o f the roo fs o f J ewel Street hous es in Saltburn being pantiles and some slat e. All should be slate. In Garn et Street bay windows have been tak en out and flat windows put in. In Ruby Street there is a particularly disagreeable porch.”

Replying to the criticisms, a Red car and Clev elan d Council spokesman said it did not have the powers to tackle Jewel Street problems raised by Councillor Jefferson.

“The Council believes it is more appropriate to encou rag e own ers o f pro perty to u ndertak e future ch ang es in keeping with the special charact er o f the buildings themselves as well as the conservation area. Advice is always availabl e by contacting the Council’s Planning Services team.”

Cabinet memb er Councillor M ary Lanig an said sh e was pleas ed that after many years of neglect, the Lookout was being success fully brought back into use through conversion to a dwelling.

The council spokesman added: “ The Valley Garden s and the form er nu rsery are ‘protect ed’ by being included in the cons erv ation area and are also on the nation al Register o f Parks and Gard ens o f Speci al Historic Int erest. The nursery site was cleared and soiled over becaus e it was a major health and safety risk due to the derelict bungalow slowly moving, with cracking walls and const ant vand alism. The greenhouses were also a target fo r vand als and thi eves. All the Council’s Saltburn ward councillors were involved in last year’s decision to clear the site. The site has benefit ed from a new lan dscaped vi ewing area, with seating and pi cnic t ables, new fencing and, most importantly, the provision o f disabl ed parking b ays making the Valley mo re accessibl e to more people.”

The council has published a ‘draft appraisal’ document outlining plans to extend the conserv ation area from the town centre to cov er the Vi ctorian area rou nd Upleath am Street and Victo ria Terrace. Superb 60s b and Striking Back pl ayed at the Cri cket Club on 6th October, for a Fund Raising Night for th e Under 15s Cricket Team, which raised over £400. Striking Back have built up a solid reputation as been one o f th e North East’s top live bands. Playing songs that we all know and love, ‘Bad Moon Rising’, ‘Meet Me On The Corner’, to classic rock songs such as ‘All right Now’ and ‘Born to be Wild’ finishing the night with their version of the Kaiser Chief’s ‘I Predict A Riot’ showing that they also can play up to date music.

The Smokie Experien ce, the Smokie Tribute Band will be playing at The Cricket Club on Saturday, 22nd Decemb er befo re they go off on Tour. Tickets are av ailable at Saltburn Cricket Club fo r only £5.

October 11th saw anoth er g reat gig at the CIU. Jim Cairnes did a goo d job which was the di ffi cult bit by opening the show whil e peopl e were g etting settled and said h e enjoyed th e gig. Jim is best known fo r his guitar making and designing fo r Burns Guit ars and has not until recently play ed live music fo r over 15 years. Recently, he has been seen around local folk clubs showcasing his latest hand made acoustic guitar that he played for us.

Suzann e Elizabeth Marron play ed her guitar an d sang her own songs along with a Joni Mitchell track and her version o f “ Somewhere Over The Rainbow” whi ch she s ang beauti fully. Suzy has spent the last five months working in Italy and had not been performing all that time and came to the CIU straight from work – not that anyone would have known she was not a full time pro fession al singer. Suzy played a blinder, despite opting to l eav e her Keybo ards o ff stage so as not to disrupt the following act’s stage set, leaving out her more up-beat numbers that she norm ally plays on Keybo ards. So, with just her guitar and beautiful voice she supported The Peter Don egan Band.

The Peter Doneg an Band were great. Some comments made were “ It was nice to hear some o f his dad’s songs but his own were ev en better” and “ He is so much like his fath er, Lonnie, and has obviously inherited his talent”. Tom Balls, the Manager o f the CIU, had an impressiv e stage made esp eci ally fo r the occasion and couldn’t get over his idol Ray Laidlow from Lindisfarn e being the drummer.

Tom also opened his dining room to serve hot beef and pork baps and for veg etari ans, pizza whi ch was a good idea because it is a long night from 7:00pm (fo r those who arriv ed early ) until midnight when the bar closed.

Now we are looking forward to the acoustic night on Thursday, 22nd Novemb er at the CIU. Tickets are only £6.00 to see three top local acts.

Saltburn based singer Paul Corn wall start ed his musical career playing the folk clubs o f South-East England 34

when he was fou rteen. Since moving to the North East he has played in various di fferent bands and gen res before retu rning to folk music about ten years ago. In 2005 he becam e one o f the fi rst gradu ates from the Folk & Traditional Music Degree Course at Newcastle Univ ersity and has sin ce busi ed himsel f with perfo rming and teaching. An accomplish ed guitarist, Paul’s repertoire featu res a mixture o f traditional an d contempo rary songs and h e will be performing som e o f his favou rites at this concert.

Les Cameron and Barb ara Hel en: The material they perform is a persuasiv e mix of traditional and compos ed songs.

Since then they h ave ho oked audien ces aro und the glob e with thei r own Blues based, Folk infused, Rock and Roll. They have experien ced reco rding a live evening session with BBC Radio after winning Southern Counties Battle o f th e Bands, performed at Guil fest 2006. In September 2006 they took the opportunity to go to Canada to promote their music.

“The Band has had a success ful year in Can ad a an d have cu rrently finished mixing their new Album ‘Admit One’.

All the songs on the album are written by Gaz Jordan and Jim Beckett and were inspired by experi ences dating back to 2000 when the band fi rst met, in Australia.

This little jewel in our town offers a huge range of regular events that include Karaoke, Country and Western, Tea Dances and Bingo nights. On November 18th they have a special Country and Western night featuring Tim McKay, and on Saturday, 24th November the Rock and Roll night features Jump the Gun with a disco (£3.00 cover charg e). Saltburn career girls succeed in medicine “ I get to go to work every d ay doing something th at I love, that will keep me interested fo rever and actually get to save people’s lives – how cool is that?” s ays Kath arin e NevilleSmith, one of three Saltburn young wom en making great strides in their medi cal career.

Emily Brown, who atten ded Huntcli ff Sch ool and St Mary’s Sixth Form College, is enjoying her fou rth year of her cou rse at Liverp ool University, which she thoroughly recommen ds. She has had the chan ce to undert ake placements in and around the city, but also some in Cheshire, experien cing adult medicin e, surgery, paedi atrics, obst etrics and gynaecology, psychiat ry and community medi cine (General Practice).

Emily has und ertaken mo re t rav elling in the summ er o f 2007, whi ch she s pent in th e medi cal d epartment o f a government hospital in Malawi. “ It was an amazing experien ce,” she s ays. As well as six weeks in the hos pital, she climbed Mount Kilimanj aro (pictured ) and explo red South Afri ca. “ Medicine can really b e the p assport to the world,” she tells us.

Although sh e knew there would be a lot o f competition wh en she ap plied for medicin e, Emily was determined to succeed and to show commitment to her subject and to life long learnin g. Excellent ‘A’ level grades clinch ed her place. She is now based at the Countess of Chester Hospital and really enjoying it. Finals are aro und the corn er (J uly), so it is going to be a tough year, “ but slowly we are becoming mo re activ e memb ers o f th e ‘team’ and not just watching and listening in the back grou nd.”

Emily has not decid ed yet wh at asp ect o f m edicin e she wants to speci alise in, but is anxious to get as wide an experien ce as she can in the UK an d abroad b efo re she m akes up her mind.

Elean or Dunn e, who attended Sacred Heart School and Prior Pursglo ve Colleg e, also chos e Liverpool Univ ersity and train ed fo r five y ears in the Mers ey Dean ery (the medi cal school catchm ent area). She did her Found ation Programme training (Ho use Officer an d fi rst year Senior Hous e Offi cer) at the Countess o f Ch ester Hospit al. This is a fairly busy District General Hospit al, offering good experien ce for junior doctors.

“The highlights of my career so far, were fi nally gradu ating and my first p ay ch equ e!” sh e says. Since th en, she has mo ved b ack to the no rth-east: to Scarborou gh, where she is doing the fi rst year o f GP training. Initially getting onto the GP training s chem e was comp etitive. The training involves six months of each o f the following: Hospital Medicin e, General Practice, Obstetri cs and Gynaecolo gy, Paediat rics, and th en twelv e months as a GP Registrar. She is currently working in General Medicin e at Scarbo rough Hospital, although her GP placement is in Whitby.

Elean or recommen ds her career, “ but it is a hard slog!” She enjoys the work, but it’s only a job at the end of the day. Both she and h er p artn er, Rory, (a graphic d esigner) are enthusi astic surfers and El eano r feels it’s important to have a good wo rk-li fe bal ance (more on the life side!). “ My ideal is being a part-time GP an d going surfing on my days o ff,” she tells me.

Like Emily, Katharine Neville-Smith, who attend ed Huntcli ff School and Prior Pursglove Colleg e, is keen to 36

trav el and has been working abro ad sev eral times as a train ee and quali fied doctor. She went straight to Newcastle University aft er leaving College, followin g a traditional medical cu rri culum o f t wo y ears o f l ectu res, follo wed b y three years on the wards. At the same time, she wo rk ed as an auxiliary nurs e and built up both experien ce and savin gs to enabl e her to go away every summer.

She work ed in a school in Kenya, spendi ng some time in a hospital there and between her fourth and fi fth year spent her elective in a hospital in Cairns in Australia. Since quali fying, she h as spent a y ear in New Zeal and, from where she popp ed ov er for a su ccess ful int ervi ew at the Freem an Hospital in Newcastle! “ New Zealand was an amazing experien ce,” she says. “ I learn ed lots working in a different system and junior doctors get a lot more to do over there becaus e there are fewer o f them.”

Kath arin e’s fi rst job aft er qu ali fying was as a Hous e Offi cer at the Queen Elizab eth Hospit al in Gat eshead. She said it was very hard work ind eed, but it wasn’t difficult to get.

Since then, com petition has b ecom e more intens e and applying for h er current Senior House Offi cer job from New Zealan d, there were arou nd sixteen hundred applicants fo r nineteen posts. At present, she is working in cardiol ogy and aiming to do a period o f research into pacemak ers, possibly with a view to a higher deg ree. “ My ambition is to carry on in cardiology, becaus e I fin d it the most interesting and exciting area to work in. My secon d choice would be acute medicin e, in which the fo cus is emergen cies. ” Kath arin e is devoted to her hospital career, but urges those co nsidering it to realise it’s not just a job, more a way o f life. “There is no es caping from wo rking ev enings, night shi fts and week ends, having to wo rk Christmas or New Year’s Eve every year…not being able to settle into a perm an ent post until you get to b e a consult ant in your thi rties and fo rties….I could go on, but for m e, the sacri fices are wo rth it. It’s the best job in the world !”

I would like to take a little bit of time to mention a few people from Saltburn who have really done the area proud in the last couple of years. We do a lot of fund raising for different charities each year, ie we adopt a different charity every January and last year’s was the Great North Air Ambulance and the people below managed to raise £250 in one night for this charity. T his year we decided to adopt Multiple Sclerosis and were on target to beat last year’s £4,500 when we started to run out of ideas. T hen all of a sudden, same as last year, Sue from ‘T rendz’ in Saltburn came forward and offered her services again and sugge sted another waxing night. She was accompanied by Inge Westerlinck from ‘Healing Hands’, Saltburn and Richard (Legs) Willis of ‘Heatwave Solarium’, Saltburn. T hey also brought with them Shane Bint who had his body waxed for our charity. Shane is from Brotton, Cleveland.

Once again Sue proved that one of her waxing nights can really pull in the customers and once again proved that there is money to be raised from this great event. We thought that there was no way she could beat last year’s amount of £250, but were we wrong? Yes! Sue and her team managed to raise £370 in one night.

What I would like to say is that thanks to Sue and her team. We are well on track to beat last year’s amount of £4,500, and already we are up to £4,700 thanks to their help. I noticed that in Talk of the T own flowers go out to people who have done stuff for the town. RAF Leeming would just like to say that Saltburn is well know on this camp and area thanks to Sue of T rendz. If anyone deserves recognition for Saltburn it is Sue and her team.

Saltburn Athletic (Junior) FC - results update Under 14s

T he U14s started the season with a good win against T hirsk Falcons at home. Saltburn dominated the first half and were 1-0 up. T hey surrendered their lead and were trailing 2-1 within five minutes of the re-start.

However, once the equaliser went in Saltburn dominated and played some flowing passing football scoring twice more to win 4-2 and take the three points.

Against old rivals So uth Park Rangers Saltburn got off to a flying start with a great individual goal from Craig Ha dden followe d by a second from Thomas Boyes to take an early 2-0 lead. Some poor defending and ability to keep hold of the ball allowed South Park back into the game and the sides went back in after half time 2-2. South Park dominated the opening stages of the second half and took a deserved 3-2 lead but Saltburn fought back to draw 3-3 with an equaliser from Tyler Johnson.

Away to Leven the wheels came off and despite a good effort from Saltburn the team lost 3-0.

In the League Cup Saltburn played Brinkburn and put in an excellent performance and led for much of the game with a goal from Jonathan Oliver. Despite the early dominance two late goals from Brinkburn took them through to the next round.

T he latest game at home against Whinney Banks sa w Saltburn play some attractive football, again dominating the play. A first half hat trick from the busy Jamie Forrest put the team in the driving seat. After leading 5-0 lapses in concentration saw the opposition pull two back but composure was regained with further goals from T om Kerr-Morgan and Jonathan Oliver to cement an 8-3 victory.

Under 13s A great start to the season saw the Under 13s dominate the opening fixture away to Prissick. An accomplished all round performance resulted in a 9-1 victory with Josh Axe grabbin g 4 of the goals.

T he League Cup draw was not so kind, taking Saltburn to a strong outfit in First Division Norton & Stockton Ancients. Mistakes proved costly and Norton played some good possession football to run out worthy 6-0 winners.

A home fixture against Coulby Newham ‘B’ saw the return to winning ways. Going 1-0 down before half time, a strong second half performance saw the team rally to run out 6-1 winners. Kevin Carney scoring a rare headed goal and Alex Whiley lobbe d the keeper from 25 yards.

Newly promoted Bedale were the visitors in the next fixture and scored goals either side of half time to take a 2-0 lead. Despite pulling a goal back, Saltburn squandered a number of excellent goal scoring 40

opportunities which was to prove costly losing 2-1 to their early challengers in the League.

Eaglescliffe Elementis entertained Saltburn in the next League fixture. Expectations were high. However, Saltburn made hard work of the game and never really got going. T hey did eventually run out 3 -1 winners and maintained their status as League leaders.

A return fixture away at Coulby Ne wham ‘B’ saw the players in confident mood. Saltburn went in to the interval with a 3-1 lead which could have been much more had several chances not gone begging. T he players made amends with a storming second half performance netting 10 goals. Man of the Match was Jack T homson who came on as a second half substitute and immediately made an impact scoring 6 of the 10 goals! Saltburn winning 13–1 and still leading the League table.

Under 12s Despite losing the first four league and cup games this season the team have started in a positive fashion and feel sure the first win is just around the corner. Our defence ironically has been our star performers with star men being Josh Fisher and Chris Aitkens and our keeper Ben Jacques, a solid shot stopper. T he lads are so enthusiastic and de dicated the results seem secondary at the moment, although we are working on it!

Holland 2008 In order to celebrate Saltburn Athletic Football Club’s 10th Anniversary we will be taking the Under 12s, Under 13s and Under 14s to Holland in March 2008 in order to participate in the Holland Easter Classic Competition.

T his trip abroad is a wonderful opportunity for the players to experience the thrill of competing against other European teams and we are pleased to report that the response from parents and other family members has been very supportive. T he intention is that the Club will subsidise up to 50% of the players’ costs. In order to fund this trip we are planning a number of fund raising events over the coming months. Suggestions include sponsored walk, car wash, supermarket bag packs, Boxing Day Dip in the sea and Bonus Ba ll. T he first of these events was a Race Night at Saltburn Cricket Club on Saturday, 27th October and we will report on our progress in future editions of the T alk of the Town.

As a committee we appreciate that there is a lot going on in Saltburn and the people of Saltburn are asked to support a number of different good causes. Ho wever, we are grateful for whatever financial support we can get.

A small charity seeking to rescue and rehome cats and dogs, T el: 01287 201005 (weekdays only). SARA has many dogs and cats that need new homes. All are clean, healthy, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Hi. My name is Max. I know the picture is in black and white but you’re not missing much as I am black. I acknowledge it’s been said before, on these pages, but us black dogs get overlooked. I guess we’re not good at being “ cute”. It isn’t that we aren’t cute it’s just we don’t look it. It’s not that we don’t love cuddles just we don’t really look cuddly. It just goes to show you shouldn’t judge a dog by his cover.

Me now, I’m cute and cuddly and loving and friendly and accommodating, even well behaved. I’m 2ish and I was an unwanted pet.

Now I seem to be an unwanted rescue dog. I know that’s not true but I get overlooked all the time.

What does a chap have to do to let you see how wonderful he is? I’m a medium sort of dog all round but not in my heart, because that is huge.

It’s full of hope and love but with no permanent people to give it too.

So after the sob story, what sort of home would be lucky to get me? Well, just about any type of family who would love me. It doesn’t matter if it contains one person or ten, I’d fit in. I could be a lovely companion, someone to make the day perfect if you’re on your own. Someone to take you out for walks and play with you. Someone to make sure you never get lonely.

If you have a family then I could mind the children, keep them safe and play with them, and then, when

they’ve gone to bed, I could be with the grown-ups and love them too.

The only thing is I don’t particularly like dogs I’m more of a people dog myself. I don’t know any cats or other small animals but I think I might not be good for them either. So, as many people, of all kinds, as you have in your family will be perfect just as long as there is only one main pet, Me. Hope I get a home really soon.

Writing for Pleasure Words.

We use them every day; to speak to people, to put our thoughts on paper, to form them into articles, company reports, stories (short or long), or to relate events based on one’s own experiences of life. Writers have known the joy of putting words together since the days of the 17th Century: Pamphleteers (and earlier), through the era of the great novels of the 19th Century, and up to the present day of communication via the Internet.

In September 2003 T alk of the Town published an article of mine entitled From Perspiration to Selling. It contained a reference to Thomas Alva Edison’s view that “ genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration”. That dictum still holds true, although the advance in Internet technology has taken away a good deal of the perspiration.

It has been said that most people have a novel waiting to see the light of day; people who have led an adventurous life and feel the urge to put it on to paper, others who have a spark of that genius that leads into the wonderland of the imagination.

How to get started?

Take a pack of A4 paper, put a pen in the hand, and write. My own method is to write in longhand be it an article or launching into a piece of fiction. If the passion to write is there the words will come. True, one’s first efforts

may finish up in the waste-paper bin, but something of value will survive. It is well to remember that there are only seven basic plots in fiction, most stories being a variation on themes which have been worked over by writers in the past. It is also well to keep in mind that for every successful author such as J. K. Rowling or Frederick Forsyth there are thousands of people who have never seen a word of their own in print.

All authors have their own methods of working. I find that writing in longhand helps my thought processes to come naturally on to the paper and I continue right through to T HE END without revision. Only then do I turn to the computer to make final adjustments and refinement of text.

Since the publication of my previous article it has become no easier to find a publisher, or agent, to handle your great opus. I had to resort to self-publishing for the first of my novels, a tough road to follow from inception to finished product, but with patience and hard work it can be done. A publication, the Writers’ and Artists’ Year Book gives full details of publishers and agents in the UK and abroad and can be seen at Saltburn Library.

So now is the time to begin. Sit down and write.

You will find that soon you are doing it simply for the pleasure of putting words on paper.

1st Saltburn Scout News At the meeting on Thursday, 13th October, a DVD of this year’s summer camp was shown to an invited audience of former Scouts, some of whom were Scouts in the thirties and forties. The photo shows a patrol from one of the Saltburn camps in the 1940s pictured are: Former Scouts who attended were: Mr Gibbs-Barton, A.Compton (17th Croydon, now living in Loftus), D. Whitwell and G. Agar (Loftus Scouts).

The DVD, which was composed of film taken by Adam Steel, was very well received by the audience who took part in a discussion with the present day Scouts. Shoes for Ethiopia bare-foot walk

Philippa Robson, a 19-year-old student, hopes a walk in the rain along Redcar-Saltburn beach, will raise £1,500 to buy shoes for barefooted African children.

She and 26 friends and family members did the sand-andpebble walk in their bare feet and felt it was a ‘huge success’ despite rain. “ I’m hopeful I’ll be very close to the £1,500 target once all the sponsorship money is collected along with the many donations received,” said Philippa, who lives in Ruskin Avenue, Saltburn.

She is now in touch with contacts in Ethiopia to seek good prices for shoes in the capital Addis Ababa, where she taught English in a gap year to September.

She hopes to save money from her university grant and from savings to fly out there either at Christmas or next year to hand out 50p shoes to children.

Philippa thanks all who helped with the appeal.

Saltburn in Bloom

Saltburn won silver in the Britain in Bloom competition when the results were announced last month in Coventry. Volunteers needed, please, to help with the over-wintering of tubs and the gardens. Work parties are usually held on T uesdays, 10.00am to 12 Noon. If you can help contact 01287 624046.

The BBC television programme ‘A Passion for Plants’ is on BBC2 at 8.00 to 8.30pm every Friday, and the Saltburn programme is due to be screened on Friday, December 7th (there may of course be a program switch).

Saltburn Christmas lights will be switched on, on Saturday, November 24th at 5.00pm with entertainment all day and there will be bands on every Saturday leading up to Christmas.

Helpers are needed, please on T uesday, November 6th at 9.00am, to help prepare the lights to be placed in position on Wednesday 7th. Thank you to the Community Arts Association for allowing us to use the hall. Contact 624046 to help.

After a hectic summer following the approval of The Library Garden Room, it looks as though things are going to get even hecticker in the build up to Christmas (I've checked with the library staff, and they have no objection to me using made-up words like ‘hecticker’ in this article, subject to pre-approval; in fact, they couldn’t be more preapprovulous if they tried).

Regular users will have already noticed some changes in the library in the last few weeks: firstly, brand new, state-of-the-art, bomb-proof, scratch-resistant windows have been installed. Secondly, we now have a new, state-of-the-art photocopier, which is even more user-friendly, reliable, and true-to-life than the last model. The fidelity on the new machine is remarkable.

New stock of all kinds is coming into the library all the time, and it’s worth keeping an eye open for the kind of information that you won’t always find by going into a bookshop or onto the internet. The library has a comprehensive collection of public transport material, which has been updated recently by Saltburn Line Users Group (SLUG).

It’s probably more important than ever that the library now has the space to accommodate as diverse a range of needs, tastes and activities as possible, and T he Library Garden Room should provide an excellent opportunity to do just that. The new Room will provide a space for more stimulating community activities, allowing the main library to be set aside for quieter pursuits.

It’s no secret that Saltburn Writers Group is still the best place to schmooze in Saltburn, and I was recently invited to join. It takes place on the second and fourth Wednesday in every month, so please come and join us.

You may be interested to learn that Friends of Saltburn Library will be holding the following events in the coming weeks: 24th November at the Christmas Market in the Square: Return of the famous Secret Garden: Children are invited to decorate Santa’s Grotto in time for his arrival to switch on the lights.

Neil Thirkell Neil was sitting at the computer amidst the clutter of the little office at the Woodland Centre; his legs sprawled half way across the room. Bracken, on sentry duty, perched neatly on the only chair that wasn’t piled with coats, tools, boots and miscellaneous debris. “ Cup of tea?”

He has been well trained by his volunteer team! I hope his replacement will be as quick to learn.

T ea made, Neil pushes back his chair and props his feet on the desk in the space not taken by empty cups and biscuit packets. He gives an impression of laid back relaxation; hardly dynamic. Appearances are deceptive however; Neil has achieved a great deal since coming to Saltburn Woodland Centre in May 2000. Keith and Christine were both hard acts to follow and Neil arrived right in the middle of grand plans for the Millennium Pageant of Light which climaxed with severe flooding in the valley. He might have wondered what he had gotten into. However, those of us who have observed over the years have seen him ‘grow into the job.’ Seven years later he is no longer a raw youth; in fact somewhere along the way he’s become a husband and father of a three year old daughter.

Group walks, creative workshops, and school visits have all been a significant part of his regular activities but he believes his central role to be the conservation and management of the natural environment and everything he has done is with this in mind.

What does he regard as the highlights of his time here and his best achievements? “ Getting the Green Flag Award for the last two years,” he answered.

What else? “ Getting the Volunteer task days up and running.”

As a volunteer myself for the past year I can vouch for the success of Friday task days. We are a motley bunch; we do what we can manage; each according to fitness and availability. It’s very informal and relaxed.

The only real obligation is to drink vast quantities of tea.

Somehow, perhaps surprisingly, we do get quite a lot of things done. Each week Neil has organised a different task for us: tree planting, tree thinning, ditching, bank repair work, shifting log jams after the floods, building bird boxes, fencing and of course the tiresome job of clearing broken glass and cans and plastic after the latest revellers.

Neil also has a group of Young Volunteers who are becoming keen naturalists and learning woodland management skills.

What are the lowlights of his time in Saltburn? “ Definitely the anti social behaviour. I must have phoned the police every day during this Easter holiday.

It’s depressing having to spend so much of my time and my volunteers’ time clearing up litter. It’s hard not to take the vandalism as a personal affront.”

Any particular regrets on leaving? “ I have been campaigning for years to get the derelict bungalow demolished and at last it has gone and 48

the site is cleared. It would have been good to oversee the creative part becoming reality. However, I leave it in the capable hands of the ‘Friends of the Valley’ who are keen to make imaginative use of the space.”

Among those who will miss Neil not least will be hordes of school children. In all weathers Neil has been seen striding down the Valley Gardens with a chattering flock scuttling behind him in pink/purple/turquoise cagoules and rucksacks for yet another rock pooling or bug hunting expedition. “ I guess I must do it right,” he says nonchalantly.

“The schools keep coming back and say they want just the same as last time.”

I asked Neil if there was anything else that he will specially remember about Saltburn. “ Of course the Pageant of Light. It’s a great event and I wish it all the best for future years and I shall keep in touch with it.”

Another school party is arriving. Bracken perks up and trots outside because visitors usually mean snacks.

Neil unfolds himself and stands up. Yes, he is too large for this office -– perhaps this is why he is being transplanted to Guisborough Forest where there is maybe more space!

Well, we wish him all the very best for the future too and really do hope he stays in touch.

Valley Views

With winter just around the corner, early Novem ber sees the arrival of hordes of winter-visiting birds. A few evergreen plants can still be found and many invertebrates rem ain active so long as the weather stays mild.

There was a brief surprise visitor to Saltburn Valley recently with a young osprey m aking residenc e for 6 days in the trees by the beck near to the Woodland Centre. It was however, a poorly young bird, which is possibly why it stayed for as long as it did.

Unfortunately it didn’t survive, but it was certainly a first for Saltburn.

Unlike rabbits, brown hares do not have the luxury of underground burrows to retreat in bad weather. Instead, they live above ground for the whole year and have to just sit it out when there is a heavy frost or an unexpected fall of snow in late autumn. As partial protection from the elem ents – and from the prying eyes of predators too – hares usually lie up in shallow depressions in the ground.

These are used regularly unless the animal’s presence is detected, in which case it will find a new and more secure location in which to rest. Snow and heavy frosts cause problems for brown hares. T his is not so much due to the associated low tem peratures – the animals have a thick winter coat of fur – but because feeding becomes difficult.

Gardeners dread the appearance of honey fungus, since it spreads from established colonies on dead wood to living trees.

This spells their inevitable demise. However, honey fungus performs an important function – it helps to recycle nutrients back to the soil. The toadstools appear from early autumn onwards, and by late Novem ber sizeable clumps have usually form ed on the stumps of dead trees. Peel away som e of the flaking bark and you may find black cords resem bling boot-laces. T hese spread out through the soil and help the fungus to find new sources. H oney fungus can be recognised by the com bination of a brown cap covered with hairy scales and a stalk that bears a whitish ring. It is common in all types of woodland during autumn.

I am sure Paul and Liz will be continuing task days every Friday and I hope you carry on supporting them. One of the tasks I have left for Paul and Liz is the strimming of Camp Bank to continue on from the hard work last year to encourage wild flowers to the area. Nicola Stonehouse

The hills are alive … with the sound of music played by a principal cornet!

Nicola Stonehouse is a keen member of Marske Brass Band and a partner in her husband Garry’s popular local computing business (now based in Marske), Garry.Biz. Originally she’s from West Yorkshire and studied for a degree in Business/Law at Huddersfield University; where she met Garry. They settled in Saltburn, as Garry is originally from Brotton.

Nicola has lived in Saltburn for thirteen years now, previously working as a Trainee Legal Executive for Redcar and Cleveland Council, in the Property Development team.

She plans to stay in the town, especially as her two children, Kimberly, aged nine and Carl, aged six are attending Saltburn Primary and in the future, Huntcliff, both of which have good reputations. The community spirit and stunning surrounding scenery are other reasons why Nicola is fond of Saltburn. Additionally, she loves living near the coast.

Marske Brass Band especially takes up a lot of her time and effort; for as well as being principal cornet, she is also their Band Sergeant and duties include informing players of news and events, logistics of equipment required for engagements, finding relief players and maintaining attendance records, not to mention attending band practice herself, plus practising at home in between.

She is especially proud of being a member this autumn as the band qualified to compete in the 2007 National Brass Band Championships (one of 20 out of an original 125) and were then placed fourteenth best Fourth Section Band in the country!

The band dates back as far as 1875, when a group of young men approached their ‘bosses’, the owners of the Upleatham Ironstone Mine, who agreed to the formation of a Brass Band and the Miners’ Union agreed to the deduction of a penny a week from the miners’ wages towards its upkeep. The Band was called the Upleatham Mines Band, but is today known as Marske Brass Band. (visit www.marskebrass.co.uk for more information on the band, including members, events and news. by Nicola, who runs the site on its behalf).

Nicola, who responded to a newspaper appeal for new members, states it came at the right time, as previously she had given up her interest in banding in favour of looking after her children. She especially enjoys the personal satisfaction of being a member and describes it as “ being part of a family atmosphere, a team”.

Another family atmosphere she enjoyed was with the Saltburn Jolly Sailor’s Playgroup, for children aged from two to five years. She played a part in founding this and took the role of Treasurer. She was voted in, having stumbled across the vacancy when visiting a friend while pregnant with her second child, Carl. Ofsted approved the childcare – qualified staff and the location at the Emmanuel Church and so the playgroup was born. It provided a good facility for the young families before closure some time after Nicola’s retirement.

A further enterprise that Nicola is involved with, Garry.Biz, is also having success. It was established when

Garry, her husband, was working as a General Manager for a Middlesbrough-based engineering company, but wanted a more flexible job, so started his own business, initially as a mobile computer technician before setting up a workshop in Cleveland Street, Saltburn. Garry.Biz focuses on computer sales and repairs and has recently moved to The Wynd in Marske. The new premises has enabled them to develop the workshops, increase the amount of stock and has given more space overall. The shop is open from Monday to Saturday and welcomes old and new customers from Saltburn.

Nicola has handled the administration side of the business since 2006. This includes dealing with postal subscriptions to ‘Talk of the Town’. Personally, she prefers the social aspect of computing, keeping in touch with people on MSN and the like, relishing the fact that the use of technology has moved on in leaps and bounds in recent times.

Sometimes Nicola reads light-hearted books, which embrace authors such as Maeve Binchy and Marian Keyes.

She listens to classical symphonies in her leisure time as well as rock and pop music, such as Queen, Guns n Roses and Robbie Williams. In addition to work, band and family life, Nicola helps her children look after the family pets – a dwarf rabbit named Bracken and a guinea pig called Patch.

When asked for her philosophy on life, she pauses for thought and then says, “I believe in living for the moment, getting the best out of every day and also looking forward to the future and not back over old ground.” In the future, she would like to allow more time for leisure in her busy schedule, such as going on holiday, which has not been possible for six years, due to the business and banding, among other things.

Nicola also describes how she likes achieving things for other people and by the looks of things, she’s truly achieving it. As for ‘Talk of the Town’, Nicola enjoys reading it, mainly the Profiles, Pride of Saltburn, and human interest parts; she expresses her view that ‘T alk of the Town’ is a Pride of Saltburn: it’s like Saltburn – special. It’s definitely the place for her!

The Teesside Hospice Tree of Life is coming to Saltburn Tourist Information Centre for the 4th year running. The Wooden Road to Nowhere by Alan Butler I have to admit to a tinge of nostalgia the other day whilst I was watching the Look North news programme on the television. The discussion wa s on piers and interviews were taking place with Saltburn residents about their own wooden road to nowhere. It reminded me just how much I use d to enjoy walking along to the end of the pier and staring out to sea. It’s strange the fascination most of us have for these Victorian boardwalks, which seem to be undergoing a renaissance at the present time.

Bridlington doesn’t have a pier, but the protecting stone arms of the harbour serve a similar purpose and it probably has something to do with the feeling of being out at sea, though without leaving behind the protection of dry land. Not that this is not always the case. I well remember when I was on my first adult holiday with friends. We were having a week in Skegness and had decided to take in the pier-end show, which as I recall featured the Gr umble wee ds. As we walked down the pier the wind wa s getting up and the rain began to lash down. Within half an hour there was a full-blown storm taking place and the crashing of the waves below us was quite audible as the show began. My enjoyment of the entertainment was somewhat spoiled by thoughts of ‘wreckers’ and threemasters coming to grief. For an hour and a half I had a strange urge to don my lifejacket and take to the boats.

Earlier this summer we visited one of the most delightful piers I have ever experienced. It was in Southwold, Suffolk. It’s a prosperous little town and the citizens there, like those of you at Saltburn, have done everything in their power to preserve and cherish their ornate Victorian Pier. One of the attractions is an amusement arcade, filled with ‘alternative’ slot machines. Included amongst these is a dog that salivates all over your hand, a terrifying ski-run in an armchair and a challenge to cross a busy road whilst clinging onto a zimmer frame.

I think my personal love of piers has something to do with finding oneself ‘somewhere’ that is basically ‘nowhere’. Even as a child I used to love taking the advice of A A Milne (of Winnie the Pooh fame) and climb to a position half way up the stairs. There I would sit for long periods, content to be ‘not at the bottom and not at the top’. It’s a sort of meditation and it works just as well on a sizeable hill.

When I lived in Otley near Leeds I used to love climbing the Chevin, which is a very steep hill that after a few miles do wn the valley becomes famous as Ilkley Moor. Almost exactly half way along one of the paths that snaked up the Chevin was a large and very comfortable rock. There I would perch, sometimes for hours, looking down on the town below with its frenetic activity, and also observing the many health-conscious walkers who struggle d past me to reach the summit. I would still be there when the same people puffed back

down aga in – anxious to get back to the rat race just as quickly as possible.

When I lived in Wales for a couple of years there was also a hill not far away, looking out across the flat land of Powys to the distant summits of stark mountains, which included Snowdon. T o the North I could see the lush flat fields of Shropshire and to the south the Montgomery canal and the grey hills in the distance. Of course the scenery was stunning and no doubt the fresh air and the climb did me the world of good, but that comfortable rock that God always manages to place half way up a hill was even better for me.

Whether it’s a pier, that steep hill or just your own staircase the method of use is the same. Find your spot, get comfortable and then empty your mind. Of course it helps if you are somewhere beautiful but in the end it doesn’t really matter because the most wonderful places exist within our own minds. In this position problems take on a more comfortable and reasonable perspective and the world of expectation, which involves being either here or there ceases to exist. Don’t try to think of anything specific, simply allow thoughts to come and go like passers by. You can wave at them, give a cheery greeting or simply pretend you didn’t see them at all – it’s completely up to you.

There is a small degree of self-discipline involved because you could just spend your ‘nowhere in particular’ time worrying more than you normally do. But as long as you allow thoughts to pass through, rather than to stay around and involve you in conversation you don’t want, the technique is sure to work.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is part of the reason piers in particular were built in the first place and is why we still love them so much to this day. For my own part piers that still contain shops, cafés, slot machine arcades or funfairs are not half so colourful or appealing as ones like the Saltburn example. On a beautiful but quiet winter’s day I would often stroll down the cliff side, with barely a soul a bout and wrapped up warm a gainst the cold northern wind.

On many occasions there would not even be a fisherman or another hardy winter walker to break the solitude and the wooden road to nowhere would stretch before me like a journey to mental paradise. Once on the boards that other world at the top of the cliff ceased to have any relevance and by the time I reached the far end I would already be a different person.

So, if you are troubled, worrying about something in particular or simply bored by the same old routines, get on your coat and go down right now to the pier. T he only rule is that you have to leave your concerns on the landwar d side of the wooden walkway. It doesn’t matter one jot that the far end of Saltburn pier has nothing but a platform and the open sea. In reality it contains the most wonderful pier-end theatre that was ever created – the theatre of dreams.

Rotary Club News

Thanks to the kindness of a Saltburn businessman we have recovered a lost piece of our history. T he club has been reunited with a magnificent silver lectern decorated with Rotary International badges which vanished nearly 20 years ago.

The lectern was presented to the club in 1931 and it is inscribed with the name of the donor, the then president George B Gapper.

It went missing in about 1988, and Dave Stokes, a businessman who ran The Victoria Hotel, Saltburn, and who later developed T he Queens Hotel into Windsors, recently found the lectern among storage from both venues. Mr Stokes, who is now developing The Vista Mar restaurant and bar on Saltburn Bank, arranged for it to be restored to its pristine magnificence, and he handed it over without any fuss to club president Malcolm Douglas.

Malcolm said: “ It was a magnificent gesture, a wonderful surprise and a great thrill to have the lectern back again and in weekly use at our meetings. Many of our members had never seen it before, and it has already been much admired by other visiting Rotary clubs.”

Among the admirers were a party of five visitors on a Rotary Group Study Exchange from Nashville, T ennessee, who gave a presentation of their home life at a dinner at Saltburn Golf Club in their honour attended by 85 members and guests from Rotary clubs all over Cleveland and North Yorkshire.

The Americans, team leader Dana McLendon, and members Alyson Williams, Meredith A Sullivan, Josh Perry and T erry Van Eaton said that Saltburn hospitality was the highlight of their European tour, and they presented the club with an illuminated certificate signed by the Governor of Tennessee.

Saltburn Rotarians took to the North Sea for a North East Rotary District conference on the ferry King of Scandinavia between North Shields and Amsterdam.

A doctor and nurses will be at the club’s Blood Pressure Clinic which is open to all members of the public at the Saltburn Community Centre complex on 10th November between 1.00pm and 6.00pm.

Letter to the Editor Once again we have a divided reaction towards a piece of public art imposed upon us by yet another self elected committee. Decisions by committee too often border on the absurd especially when they stray into areas where they have little or no expertise. A camel being the product of a committee trying to design a house is a well known example.

However, Andrew Mckeown should not be dismayed at any adverse criticism of his honest endeavours. He is in good company - Constable had a painting rejected by the Royal Academy as being “ A nasty green thing” and Michelangelo had to perform a few tricks to satisfy his patrons.

It is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but with this work by Andrew in Saltburn a magnifying glass would be a useful aid in making such an assessment. The work is far too small to have any influence upon its site. Andrew told us that cost was the major factor in determining its size.

After recovering from the news that the entire badly designed and useless development cost an outrageous £300,000, I think many will agree that a fewer number of railings would have provided the extra funding for a more appropriate size of sculpture.

I have no quarrel with the choice of subject or its interpretation, which is both interesting and stimulating, though the rust spots do nothing to enhance its image.

I await the next installation of public art in Saltburn with continuing dismay.

Roll-up! Roll-up! For Saltburn’s Speciality Christmas Market!

This year’s Saltburn Speciality Christmas Market will take place on Saturday, 24th November 2007 from 10.00am until 4.00pm in Saltburn Station Square. Organised by Real Meals this will be our biggest market ever! The market will offer an exciting range of Christmas foods and gifts, all from local businesses and organisations.

Alongside the market there will be plenty of entertainment for all the family. There will be Christmas decoration making activities for the children organised by Friends of Saltburn Library, Specky the clown, Punch and Judy and local brass bands will be performing all day thanks to Saltburn 500 club. Even the BBC bus is coming to share in the fun!

At 5.00pm there will be carol singing with the ’53 Drama Group around the Christmas tree on Albion Terrace accompanied by Marske Brass Band. This will be followed by the switch on of Saltburn’s Christmas lights and at 5.15pm Santa is arriving in spectacular style with Saltburn Fire Brigade!

With so much going on why not bring the family for a fun day out? And make Saltburn the place to start your Christmas shopping.

My name is Karen Buck and I work at Somerfi eld, Milton Street, Saltburn as a Checkout Supervisor. I organised a charity bag packing day on 4th October for our charity MacMillan Nurses. Jade Frazer, who also works at Somerfield and her mum Julie Frazer volunteered to help. I was dressed up as The King, Elvis Presley, Jade was Rambo and Julie was a Cheerlead er. We started at 11am until 4pm and raised a fantastic sum of £422. I’d like to thank Jade and especially Julie who went out to the local shops and did a cheerleader chant and dance. Everyone, staff and customers alike enjoyed the day. Sad to say that Elvis lost his voice and couldn’t sing.

I’d like to say a big think you to everyone.
