Our History On October 23, 1835 the General Assembly of the Territory of Arkansas passed an act which took in 1,027 miles of lands from Independence, Pulaski, and Jackson Counties and created White County. White County is comprised of 16 communities today. Originally called Sulphur Springs, Searcy began its history on November 23, 1837. It was on this date that the State Legislature of Arkansas upon designating the seat of White County officially named it Searcy in honor of Richard Searcy, a transplanted attorney who helped the territory attain statehood.

GOVERNMENT City of Searcy

The City of Searcy operates under a Mayor/Council form of government. The Mayor serves a four-year term and eight Aldermen serve two-year terms. The Mayor is responsible for management of all the city's departments and funds. City administration is with Council approval. The city is served by a 66 member Police Department and a 59 member Fire Department. There are three fire station locations in Searcy and our Insurance Service Organization rating is Class One. The Searcy Fire Department is (ISO1) Class One Insurance Services Office Rated. It is the only Class 1 Department in the state of Arkansas. The rating also puts it among the top eight in the country. The City also operates the following departments: Street, Sanitation, Code Enforcement, Parks and Recreation, White County Regional Library, Searcy Municipal Airport, Animal Control, Engineering, Planning and Information Technology. White County The White County government provides services to all citizens in the county. Departments and agencies include: Cooperative Extension Service, County Roads, County Schools, Department of Public Welfare, Health Department, Detention Center, Office of Emergency Services, Juvenile Probation Officer and Voter Registration. The County Judge is the Chief Executive Officer for the county and serves a two-year term. The residents elect a county-wide legislative body called the Quorum Court, composed of 13 Justices of the Peace, each representing a geographic district within the county. Together, the County Judge and the Justices of the Peace govern the county.

GARBAGE PICKUP Inside City of Searcy residents will receive a 2 time a week pick-up on household trash pick-up. Please call the Sanitation Department at 279-1000 to obtain your route schedule.

COMMERCIAL SHREDDER

The City of Searcy offers free brush and junk removal. Please have these items in separate piles at your curbside and contact the Sanitation Department to have your piles scheduled for pick-up. Please make sure that limbs are no longer than 6ft in length.

A Commercial Shredder is now available at the Searcy Recycle Center. Protect yourself against Identity Theft - Bring your important papers & documents. Call ahead to get your documents shredded while you watch - 279-1070.

The Sanitation Department does not pick-up concrete, dirt, tires or any kind of masonry items or hazardous chemicals. If you need to dispose of paint products please follow these instructions: make sure liquid paint is in a solid form before calling the Sanitation Department for removal. You can obtain this by putting dirt, sand, kitty litter or shredded newspaper into the can to make the paint into a solid matter…please place can with lid off at curbside and call the Sanitation Department to schedule pick-up.

RECYCLING

ELECTRONIC RECYCLING (E-CYCLING) The Searcy Recycling center is taking a proactive approach by being one of only six ELECTRONIC recycling locations in the state. Suggested items for e-cycling are TVs, VHS and DVD players, computers and all computer hardware, cameras, cell phones, fax machines, etc.

The Searcy Recycle Center accepts recyclables from White, Cleburne, Woodruff and Jackson Counties. The items listed below can be dropped off at the Recycle Center: Paper-Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office and school paper and phone books, can be recycled. Wet paper can't be recycled! Cardboard-corrugated only (flatten and okay wet or dry, Plastic Bottles (must have a neck), milk, juice, ketchup, detergent, lotion, etc (remove lid & empty contents), aluminum cans (empty contents, leave pop tabs on, no need to crush), steel / tin cans (empty contents, rinse clean, drop metal lid into can and leave labels on). No dairy tubs, auto fluids or pesticide bottles. All recycling and e-cycling can be dropped off at the recycle center, Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 409 West Beebe Capps Expressway. (At the intersection of Elm St.)

ecreation The Searcy area has a host of fun things to do including an enormous amount of outdoor activities plus a bowling alley, two movie theaters, a dinner theater, laser arcade, seven fitness centers and a roller skating center. Little Red River

The Little Red River offers fun for the casual and serious fisherman alike. The Little Red River tail waters below Greer's Ferry Dam and for about 29 miles down river it is also a world-class fishery. It is home of the nationallyfamous brown trout and rainbow trout. The national record brown trout was caught near Heber Springs in 1992 and weighed over 40 pounds and was 40 inches long. There are several access points, the nearest being Riverside Road, Ramsey Access and Dripping Springs.

Greers Ferry Lake

Greers Ferry Lake, with its 40,000 acres of water fun, is a mere 40 minute drive from Searcy. Splash and swim in sun-kissed Greers Ferry Lake. Thereâ€™s lots of room to

ski and make waves. Boaters, sail boaters, water-skiers, house boaters, scuba divers and the party barge folks all get along because they seldom cross paths in this expanse of sparkling clear water. If fishing is your passion, then you will be interested to learn that Greers Ferry holds the world record for walleye and hybrid striper. There are many camping spots available around the lake and enough activities to keep the whole family busy.

Barnett Lake

Lake Barnett, formerly known as White County Lake, is one of the Game & Fish Commission's most picturesque fishing spots. Rock bluffs and ledges tower over much of the shoreline. Some anglers describe it as a miniature version of Greers Ferry Lake. Largemouth

bass, bluegills and redear sunfish are foremost on the minds of most anglers visiting Lake Barnett, although the lake also has healthy populations of channel catfish, crappies and warmouths.

Golfing

Tee off at one of Searcyâ€™s two golf courses. The Course at River Oaks is open to the public and offers gently rolling terrain along the Little Red River. Henry Gray / Hurricane Lake Wildlife Refuge

Some of the finest mallard duck hunting or watching is available at the Henry Gray / Hurricane Lake Wildlife Refuge with over 17,000 acres available for hunting and fishing.

Bald Knob National Wildlife Refugee

The new Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge has over 14,800 acres available for wintering waterfowl and about half of this acreage is available for hunting. Take your camera or binoculars and enjoy hours of bird watching.

Get Down, Downtown

The Searcy Get Down Downtown is a free, funfilled family event featuring musicians, artists, and vendors from throughout the Mid-South. The event is centered around the Court Square.

Center On The Square

If you love theater and great food, then pay a visit to the Center On The Square. This not-for-profit organization is dedicated to the expansion and appreciation of the performing arts in the region.

White County Fair

Held the week after Labor Day at the White County Fair Grounds, the fair has been recognized as one of the top 10 county fairs in the nation. It features a parade, a carnival, rodeo and nationally recognized talent.

Holiday of Lights Festival

Searcy hosts the Holiday of Lights Festival from the last week of November through December. It features a lighted parade, pageant and craft show. Enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride offered in Berryhill Park. The event has become a major attraction for the city.

Camp Wyldewood

If you’re the adventurous type, then get a group together and go rappelling off of B Rock. Located on the grounds of Camp Wyldewood, the 80 foot rock face offers up plenty of excitement.

The Camp has been in operation since the 40’s and features a host of activities available for the young and young at heart.

Cardboard Boat Races

Heber Springs hosts their World Championship Cardboard Boat Festival in July.

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains nearly 240 acres for residents and visitors to enjoy. They are a great place to take your family for outdoor play. A detailed listing of available amenities is listed below.

Spring Sing

Spring Sing is an annual musical production held during Easter Weekend, featuring performances by the Harding University’s social clubs. Typically, over 10,000 people attend the show. Each year, an overall theme is selected, and each club develops music and dance routines for the show.

Searcy Thrills on Wheels

A great family friendly environment is awaiting you at the local skate center. They feature the latest music and a highly skilled staff. So lace up your skates and be on the look out for the world class inline speed skating champion who happens to own the place. He might even give you a few pointers.

Night at the Rialto

Opened in 1923 and remodeled with splashy neon lighting in the 1940s, it is one of only a few historic theaters that maintains a daily schedule, with matinees on weekends. It’s a great place to enjoy a movie in a piece of history.

Celebrate the 4th of July

You can enjoy a host of 4th of July activities around White County. The town of Floyd hosts their own 4th of July celebration complete with live music, food and fireworks. Get Down, Downtown Festival

The Searcy Get Down Downtown is a free, fun-filled family event featuring musicians & artists from LECTURE SERIES throughout the Mid-South. The event is centered around the historic court square. The festival begins at Harding University brings in world renowned lecturers 6 p.m. on Friday night. Saturday events begin at 10 as part of the American Studies Distinguished Lecture a.m. and continue till the music stops on Saturday Series. Previous speakers have included: President night. A children's area will be in Spring Park during George Bush, Barbara Bush, Margaret Thatcher, the daylight hours and there will be inflatables, games, Vencente Fox, Sean Hannity, Dick Cheney, Henry rides and kid friendly entertainment.

Arkansas State University at Beebe also has a theater department. The Arkansas Shakespeare Festival was founded on the ASU-Beebe campus in 1966, the Arkansas SHAKESPEARE Festival is one of the older continuous educational Shakespeare festivals in America. Spring Sing

Spring Sing is held annually on Easter Weekend at Harding University. The three-day event features musical acts performed by student social clubs. Typically, over 10,000 people attend the show. Each year, an overall theme is selected, and each club develops music and dance routines for the show. Each club act is judged, and according to their performance, each club is awarded a certain amount of money. The clubs then donate this money to charities of their choice. Community Guide

CANCER CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

Several years ago, White County Medical Center and the White County Medical Foundation recognized the need for a central location for patients to receive medical care and treatment for cancer. That vision will soon become a reality as construction is underway on the Cancer Center of Excellence at WCMCâ€™s South Campus on South Main Street. The center will house radiation therapy, chemotherapy, a new Breast Center, Imaging Center, Appearance Center and more. COMMERCIAL BUSINESS As in its early days, Searcy continues to be a major trade center for local residents and others living in outlying areas. There are many shopping areas, a wide range of restaurants and other businesses ready to serve you. Chili’s, McAlister’s, JCPenneys, Lowes and Staples are just a few of the national chains that call Searcy home. The searcy area also boast a neat mix of boutiques, local restaurants and specialty stores. Our stable economic base and increase in population has allowed commercial businesses to flourish in our area. A boom in the hotel industry occurred increasing the number of rooms available to nearly 850 units. The downtown area offers a quaint mix of eating establishments, retail stores, business offices and financial institutions. The Main Street Searcy Program strives to keep businesses in the downtown area and works to secure grants to help maintain the appearance of our downtown.

MANUFACTURING & INDUSTRY In 2010, two local companies announced expansion to their businesses. ElectroCraft formed a partnership with U.S. based SN Tech, Inc., to produce a “green” motor at the company’s Searcy manufacturing facility. The company will hire about 55 new employees combined, taking total employment in Searcy from 70 employees to 125. Eaton corporation also announced plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Searcy, Arkansas where hydraulic valves for the construction and transportation markets are produced. The company will invest $5 million in the expansion, and will add more than 100 new employees.

The airport is equipped with state of the art instrument approach facilities, FAA computerized, automated weather stations as well as runway and approach lighting to meet the latest requirements for all weather operations. A new taxiway was recently completed and hangars have been constructed to capacity on the north side of the taxiway and expansion is underway on the south side. HOUSING Searcy is a great place to call home. Growth in the community has been balanced by a desire to maintain small-town character. Even in the new developments, planners and builders strive to keep the traditional feel. Our area offers a high quality of life with living expenses lower than the national average. Residential Housing Approximately 175 homes are normally for sale in the Searcy area and 450 in the county. Homes are available in all price ranges, from the very lowest priced livable house at around $40,000 to a high cost of $1,000,000 in Searcy and surrounding communities. In 2009, there were 575 single family homes sold in Searcy with an average price of $136,545. For the entire area there were 736 homes sold, with the average sales price being $135,955. Home Construction costs presently start at $90 + per square foot. There are many starter homes on the market in the $150,000 range and $188,000 is the average list price for the area. 48

Visit the Revenue Department located at 402 West Vine to update your drivers license and your tags if needed. To renew your tags you will need to have the following information: . Current automobile registeration certificate . Property tax assessment . Proof of liability isurance Register to vote.
