Our History On October 23, 1835, the General Assembly of the Territory of Arkansas passed an act which took in 1,027 miles of land from Independence, Pulaski, and Jackson Counties and created White County. Originally called Sulphur Springs, Searcy began its history on November 23, 1837. It was on this date the State Legislature designating the seat of White County, officially named it Searcy, in honor of Richard Searcy an attorney who helped the territory attain statehood.

The Little Red River and White Sulphur Springs are both a part of Searcy’s founding. The springs were developed in the park and attracted visitors with their purported healing properties. In 1849, the first steamboat pulled in where Gin and Deener Creeks empty into the Little Red River. The spot was quickly named Searcy Landing and became a trade center.

Today our downtown area is still thriving thanks to beautification projects spearheaded by the City of Searcy, Main Street Searcy and the Searcy Regional

Many of our downtown buildings are being rennovated by locals who desire to locate their businesses in the downtown district.

The White County Historical Society is also working to preserve and protect our unique history. They operate and maintain Pioneer Village, a collage of buildings and other artifacts from our history. There are also several books where more information can be found about Searcy's history: Carolyn Boyles and Patsy Pipkins’s “Images of America: Searcy,” Raymond Muncy's "Searcy, Arkansas: A Frontier Town Grows Up with America" and Claude Johnson's "The Humorous History of White County".

Government and local officals

The City operates under a mayor/council form of government.

The Mayor, Clerk Treasurer and City Attorney serves a four-year term. The eight Council Members serve two-year terms. The Mayor is responsible for management of all the City’s departments and custodian of all City property, while the Clerk Treasurer is responsible for records and all financial documentation. The Council Members review and pass all City resolutions and ordinances. The city is served by more than 200 workers including a 60 plus member Police Department and a 50 plus member Fire Department. Searcy is currently rated a Public Protection Class 1 by the Insurance Services Office (ISO).

The White County government provides services to all citizens in the county. Departments and agencies include: Cooperative Extension Service, County Roads, Department of Public Welfare, Health Department, Detention Center, Office of Emergency Services, Juvenile Probation Officer and Voter Registration.

In addition, the City operates the following departments: Street, Sanitation, Code Enforcement, Parks and Recreation, Searcy Municipal Airport, District Court, Engineering and Information Technology with the White County Regional Library being operated jointly by the City and the County.

The White County Court House is the oldest in the state still used for it’s orginal purpose.

The County Judge is the Chief Executive Officer for the County and serves a four-year term.

The residents elect a legislative body called the quorum court, composed of 13 justices of the peace, each representing a geographic district within the county. Together, the County Judge and the Justices of the Peace govern the county.

Get Down, Downtown Festival The Searcy Get Down Downtown is a free, fun-filled family event featuring musicians & artists from throughout the Mid-South. The weekend event is centered around the historic court square and begins Friday evening. A children's area is located in Spring Park on Saturday and includes inflatables, games, rides and kid friendly entertainment. The event is held the last weekend in September.

White County Fair

GO SEE DO

Held the week after Labor Day at the White County Fair Grounds, the fair has been recognized as one of the top ten county fairs in the nation. The event features a parade, carnival, demolition derby, rodeo and nationally recognized talent.

Beats and Eats Beats and Eats is bringing nightlife to Searcy with an art filled event held four times a year. Typically held on the third Saturday of the month, the event features local artists and performers as well as food trucks and vendors and is held four times a year.

Holiday of Lights Festival The Holiday of Lights Festival makes Searcy a special place during this time of year. The city parks, court square, local businesses and Harding University are a-glow with of the holiday spirit from Thanksgiving until after New Years. The festival kicks off with a televised lighting ceremony that concludes with the opening of the ice skating rink located in historic Spring Park. For a small fee the whole family can rent skates and enjoy skating under the lights. The Searcy Christmas Parade features lighted floats, animals and cars. It’s a favorite of the young and old alike. And what Christmas would be complete without a visit with Santa at the Santa Hut located on the Square.

Pioneer Village Open House

Take a step back in time at the recreated 1800’s village donned with red and green decorations for Christmas, where children can visit with Santa and families can enjoy sugar cookies. Children can also play pioneer games and activities including seeing live farm animals. Volunteers, dressed in period costumes, share facts about the buildings and pioneer life, as well as demonstrate pioneer crafts, including blacksmithing, spinning, quilting, knitting, leather working, Dutch oven cooking, wood working and more. Parking and admission is free.

The Living Nativity This Christmas, come and experience the birth of Jesus at First Assembly of God in Searcy. This adventure will take you back in time to experience first-hand the birth of our Savior. The annual Living Nativity features live animals and professionally crafted scenery to provide a memorable Christmas experience.

The event is typically held for two weekends in December. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

Lake Barnett (pictured)

Lake Barnett, formerly known as White County Lake, is one of the AGFC's most picturesque fishing spots.

Although the surface acreage is relatively small, this narrow, serpentine lake winds for nearly three miles through forested hills. Rock bluffs and ledges tower over much of the shoreline.

The Little Red River tailwaters below Greer's Ferry Dam and, for about 29 miles, is a world-class fishery. It is known for its brown and rainbow trout. There are several access points, the nearest being Riverside Road, Ramsey Access and Dripping Springs.

Greers Ferry Lake, with its 40,000 acres of water fun, has lots of room to ski and make waves. Sail boating water-sking and scuba diving are all enjoyed at Greers Ferry. Fishermen will be interested to learn that Greers Ferry holds the world record for walleye and hybrid striper. RV and tent camping is available.

GO, SEE, DO The Searcy Parks and Recreation Commission is dedicated to directing and improving recreational programs, special events, facilities, and services to best serve the citizens of Searcy. The department maintains over 240 acres for public recreational use.

The Carmichael Community Center offers free basketball play on weekdays from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM and walking is available each Monday through Friday 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The center also hosts events throughout the year.

The Searcy Sports Complex located on Queensway features 18 soccer fields, five basketball courts, football, baseball, softball fields plus picnic areas. It is also the site of the Searcy Events Center, which features a large stage with power, restrooms and a skatepark. An 18 hole Disk golf course is nearby, but bring your disk. Our Dog Park is located in the complex and features two fenced in areas for your happy pooch to enjoy.

There are four parks including Berryhill, Riverside, Yancey and Spring Park. Berryhill park recently added a Sensory Park area to allow everyone the joy of playing in our parks. It also features two pavilions, five lighted tennis courts, sand volleyball court, shuffleboard and restrooms.

Riverside features 99 acres of land for your hiking pleasure, including a handicap accessible trail. A playground, two pavilions, picnic area, boat launch and river outlook make Riverside one of our more nature focused parks.

Yancey Park is located on our west side and features two pavilions, five lighted tennis courts, sand volleyball court, shuffleboard and restrooms.

It runs along Deener Creek.

Spring Park is the city’s historic park. The well waters are responsible for the city’s initial growth.

The public library and the old, capped off, Sulpher Springs well sit in the middle of the park.

A playground, a pavilion, picnic area and walking trails make it a great lunch spot. It also is home to the seasonal Ice Rink.

The city maintains 4.8 miles of paved biking and walking trails and a covered fishing pier on Searcy lake. Fishing is free, but you must have a license.

Freedom Fest is a great community event for you, your family, and all of your friends! All day long your family can enjoy kids activities, a three on three basketball tournament, stage entertainment, food and sweets. A fireworks show ends the day. The event takes place in late May.

4th of July Celebrations

You can enjoy a host of 4th of July activities around White County. The town of Floyd hosts their own 4th of July celebration complete with live music, food and fireworks. Judsonia’s annual event includes live music, events and fireworks. Pangburn marks Independence Day with a parade, fun filled events and contests, live entertainment and a free BBQ dinner.

Art Alley

The Think ART Project has turned a downtown alleyway into a creative destination. You can walk the alley anytime; however, one Saturday night a month the Art Alley comes to life with local artist, musicians, and food vendors. Make plans to come out to watch the artists paint live, eat, listen and hang out with friends and family.

Center on the Square

For dinner and live theatre, or for acting classes, don’t miss Center on the Square, one of “The Arts on Arch” in Searcy.

This community theater uses fantastic local talent to put on six shows a year, including a summer musical. The KidStage program meets one day a week and puts on a show each fall semester and each spring semester, then meets daily in June to produce their big musical.

Spring Sing

Spring Sing is a musical revue that allows over 1,000 Harding University students from over 20 social clubs and organizations on campus to take part in the annual production. Over 11,000 people from all over the country and all around the world come to see the production on the days before Easter Sunday each year. The venue offers a unique chance for the social clubs to compete for cash prizes to be donated to charitable organizations.

SEARCY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Searcy School District is committed to providing students with a quality education. Over 4,050 students are served on six campuses across the city.

The three elementary schools which consist of McRae Elementary, Sidney Deener Elementary, and Westside Elementary house students in grades K-3, Southwest Middle School is made up of grades 4-6, Ahlf Junior High School educates students in grades 7 and 8, and Searcy High School is comprised of students in grades 9-12. Health Care Unity Health associates strive to improve the quality of health and well-being for the communities they serve through compassionate care. Unity Health is the largest employer in an eight-county area with more than 2,300 associates; the area includes Cleburne, Independence, Jackson, Prairie, Van Buren, White, Woodruff and Lonoke counties. In Searcy, Unity Health has a combined total of 438 licensed beds and a medical staff of more than 150 physicians that specialize in various areas of healthcare.

Unity Health offers a wide range of healthcare services to the region, including 24-hour emergency care.

The hospital is a Level III Trauma Center as part of the statewide trauma system, as well as a member facility of the UAMS-based AR SAVES (Stroke Assistance through Virtual Emergency Support) program, which provides immediate care for stroke victims.

Services Unity Health provides for patients include: an accredited sleep center, a Home Health agency, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative services, critical care services, cardiology, cancer care, behavioral health programs for all ages, inpatient hospice, a sports medicine program and orthopaedics. Also, Unity Health houses the Advanced Care Hospital of White County, one of the only long-term acute care hospitals in North-Central Arkansas.

Unity Health is the first healthcare organization in Arkansas to be accepted in to the Mayo Clinic Care Network. The formal agreement gives Unity Health access to the latest Mayo Clinic expertise and promotes collaboration among physicians to benefit patients. Through these shared resources, more patients can get answers to complex medical questions – and peace of mind – while staying close to home.

Strides to achieve excellence were recognized by Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson in September 2018 when he presented Unity Health with the prestigious Governor’s Quality Award. The award is the highest level of recognition presented to state organizations that have demonstrated the excellent performance through their practices and achievements. Unity Health is the only organization to receive the Governor’s Quality Award three times; the hospital also received the award in 2012 and 2002.

Unity Health is proud to be called an accredited teaching hospital by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, with graduate medical education programs in emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine and psychiatry plus a transitional year. Serving as the graduate phase of medical training, each program offers three years of intensive, hands-on medicine training within both hospital and clinic environments. The program assists in ensuring healthcare for future generations in Arkansas.

In addition to the White County Medical Center and Specialty Care campuses in Searcy, Unity Health includes Harris Medical Center in Newport and clinics in Beebe, Bradford, Cabot, Clinton and Heber Springs.

The Unity Health System consist of physician clinics, urgent care clinics, a behavioral health clinic, an orthopedic and spine center and a cardiology clinic.

Another vital partnership Unity Health initiated was to develop The Pyeatt Family Cancer Center. The collaboration between Unity Health Oncology, CARTI and RAPA/Searcy Breast Center offers personal and quality cancer care to patients in the region. The most advanced technology each healthcare partner has to offer converges in the Cancer Center.

OTHER SERVICES In addition, residents find quality health services at the White County Health Department and through other local healthcare providers and clinics. The health department offers a wide variety of services, from adult health maintenance and immunizations to family clinics and home health care. Located at 112 Brantly Road and they are open 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There are three Urgent Care Offices in Searcy offering medical care after hours and on weekends.

Over 20 dentists practice in the area covering general dentistry, orthodontics and oral/maxillofacial surgery.

The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System operates a clinic that provides Primary Care services for veterans in north central Arkansas area. Behavioral health services including individual, group and family counseling, and programs such as QuitSmart Smoking Cessation are also available. The clinic is located at 1120 S Main Street Searcy Arkansas 72143 and can be reached at 501-207-4700.

Our community is also served by the Christian Health Ministry of White County (CHM). A 501(c) (3) non-profit faith based holistic outreach care ministry with a mission of promoting the physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness of the medically disadvantaged in White County. The CHM is located at 104 East Vine Street in Searcy and is open Sunday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. CHM is staffed entirely by volunteers and operates through donations from individuals, churches and businesses in our community.

and economic development Searcy continues to be a major trade center for local residents and others living in outlying areas. There are many shopping centers, a range of restaurants and other businesses ready to serve you. Hobby Lobby, T.J. Max, JCPenne and Lowes are just a few of the national chains that call Searcy home. The Searcy area also boast a strong locally owned business base that includes a mix of boutiques, local restaurants, and specialty services.

Revitalization efforts in our downtown area have helped to create a vibrant arts district with a mix of eating establishments, retail stores, business offices and financial institutions. The Main Street Searcy Program strives to keep businesses in the downtown area and works to secure grants to help maintain the appearance of our downtown.

MANUFACTURING Manufacturing and distribution plays a vital role in Searcy’s economy. Approximately 10% of the workforce is employed in these areas. Searcy’s partnership with business and industry is coordinated and facilitated by the Searcy Regional Economic Development Corporation and the Searcy Regional Chamber of Commerce.

AVIATION Searcy’s Municipal Airport is one of the faster growing top general aviation airports in the state with 100 or more based aircraft with daily corporate and private business operations. The airport also welcomes many charter operations, fire fighting, medical transplant and rescue operations as well as fixed wing and rotor craft flight training activities. The extended runway is 6,008 feet in length and 100 feet wide with a weight capacity of 80,000 pounds. The airport is equipped with stateof- the-art instrument approach facilities, FAA computerized, automated weather stations as well as runway and approach lighting for all weather operations.

The airport is capable of accommodating G5 ACFT and serves a variety of corporations and businesses that fly jets, turbo-props and piston ACFT into and out of the airport on a regular basis. The airport is attended from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. daily and is open to flight operations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Self serve fuel is available as well as hanger space and maintenance.

Searcy is a great place to call home. Growth in the community has been balanced by a desire to maintain small town character. Even in the new developments, planners and builders strive to keep the traditional feel. Whether your looking for a historic home or a new modern home their are plenty of options for you and your family.

Residential Housing Approximately 400 homes are normally for sale in the Searcy area and 800 in the county. Homes are available in all price ranges, from the very lowest priced livable house around $50,000 to a high cost of $1,000,000. In 2018, there were 397 single family homes sold in Searcy with an average sale price of $155,272. For the entire area, there were 690 homes sold with the average sales price being $145,754. Home construction costs presently start at $99 + per square foot. There are many starter homes on the market in the $100,000 range. The median list price was $159,900 for the Searcy area.

Rentals A variety of rental options are available in our area. Single family homes are available for rent as well as apartments, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes.

There is no central rental agency to help in finding rentals, but information can be found in the local paper and most of the real estate firms are helpful in directing new people to housing possibilities.

Personal Property Tax Property tax is calculated based on 20% of the fair market value of real and personal property and the average annual value of merchants' stocks and/or manufacturers' inventories based on millage rates in individual school districts.

Business firms and individuals are subject to annual property tax on all real and personal property.

Millage rates can vary according to several factors including school districts within the city.

Example: $100,000 value X 20% = $20,000 $ 20,000 multiplied by the millage of 39.8 (.0398) Public Housing There are over 200 public housing units in Searcy. Public assistance housing is available for low income and elderly residents through individual apartment complexes or the Searcy Housing Authority which may be reached at 268-8547.
