Southeast Asian Pasts & Futures (SEAPF, pronounced “sea puff”) was founded in 2021 as an identity-centered program for Southeast Asian, Southeast Asian American, and other AANHPI and BIPOC students at the University of Washington, Bothell. We came together against a tide of anti-Asian hate to grow and to heal while forging relationships with each other and organizations in the Puget Sound. These experiences intersected with our engagement of food and the practices of cooking, eating, and celebrating as modes of storytelling and repositories of knowledge. With training from the Wing Luke Museum, we conducted oral histories with family and community members, asking questions and listening closely as beloved narrators shared their memories of food at home and in diaspora.
