Issue #29 OCT - DEC, 2016

Welcome to our 29th Edition

I wish to sincerely thank all the Instructors who selflessly worked all year, week after week, month after month with no monetary reward. The TKA could not have achieved all it did without your generous support. To participants of the many local and Caribbean tournaments, I also wish to thank you for all the sacrifice you made so that you could properly represent your club and your country. It was no easy feat as you had to commit many hours to training and keeping fit. Next year will prove to be an arduous one as TKA members are expected to participate in tournaments in several countries including Venezuela, Caracas, Suriname and Curacao. These tournaments will serve as qualifying matches as we attempt to send a team to Olympics in japan in 2020. We wish those persons good luck in advance As we celebrate the birth of the Christ Child, let us remember the message of love, peace and joy that the season brings. As Karatekas we too can spread the message through our actions as we go about our daily business. Do have a happy and Holy Christmas So do keep reading and enjoy‌‌..

Regards

Shihan Wesley Dexter Shim

Chairman & Chief Instructor TKA(IKD)

ON THE ROAD TO JAPAN Welcome to Japan August 2016 was a historic day as the Olympic voted for Karate to be in Japan Olympics in 2020. The IOC General Meeting to decide the additional sporting events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, was held on August 3, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 5 sports and 18 events that were proposed by the Organizing Committee of the Tokyo Games were approved by a unanimous decision, with Karate officially added as one of the sports for Tokyo 2020. The Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF), which promoted Karate to the Olympic Committee held a press conference on August 4, 2016, at the Nihon Karate-Do Kaikan in Tokyo, Japan. President of the JKF, Sasagawa Takashi, stated, “The WKF (World Karate Federation) has members in 192 countries, and international regions with more than 100 million enthusiasts. Karate-Do is highly respected, particularly in Europe, and renowned as a traditional cultural aspect of Japan. We believe these factors, observed at the IOC General Meeting, allowed Comic Corner Karate to become officially recognized.” At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it is planned that Judo matches will first take place, followed by Karate at the iconic sporting hall, the Nippon Budo-kan. Karate competitions will have 8 events as originally proposed - 3 Men’s Weight Category Kumite, 3 Women’s Weight Category Kumite and Men’s & Women’s Kata Categories, with a total of 80 participants, 40 men and 40 women. The event is planned for 2 days and the weights for each category will be determined later.

Issue #29 OCT - DEC, 2016

Editor’s Note I was busy searching through my box of Karate Notes and came across a printed document on this topic. Below are excerpts from the document. I really cannot remember the origin but I think it is interesting reading for those advanced Karatekas who are interested in what I call the “scientific” or theoretical part of karate which of course must be translated into practical sessions while in the dojo. As I cannot verify the source feel free to send your comments to kimoy2004@yahoo.com and they will be placed in the next edition of the Newsletter.

Hip

Rotation in Karate Koshi Kaiten, Gyaku Kaiten, Jun Kaiten, Shindo Kaiten. What are they? They are all ways to use the hip to generate power.

Koshi Kaiten

Koshi Kaiten means Hip Rotation and it’s a very important and basic part of generating power in karate for both kicking and striking. With proper hip rotation (Jun Kaiten) and reverse rotation (Gyaku Kaiten) you will generate more snap and more power. Jun Kaiten means to rotate with the techniques, this would be similar to rotating the hip into the techniques and Gyaku Kaiten away from a technique. It actually has little to do with position (Hanmi, Shomen and Gyaku Hanmi). 11

Jun Kaiten

Jun Kaiten is when your hip rotates with the movement. So when you are performing Gyaku zuki or reverse punch you will rotate your hip into the movement by rotating the back hip along with the arm into the target. This generates a great deal of power as you rotate and also use the back leg to push with off the floor. This power full technique will generate a huge amount of power as you move from position to position.

Gyaku Kaiten

Gyaku Kaiten is the opposite of Jun Kaiten in that the movement of the “power hip” goes the opposite direction as the technique being applied. A good example is a Gedan Barai or Uraken with the lead hand while standing still. The rear hip moves away from the front line so your hip/ body goes from Shomen to Hanmi position to give snap and power to the front hand. In this case a Hidari Gedan Barai Zenkutsu dachi is done ( left side down block in left front stance) the rear power hip rotates away from the down block powerfully and the front hip thrusts into the movement.

A similar movement is the Uraken done with the left hand when in Left side Zenkutsu Dachi. As your arm extends out you will quickly rotate your back hip away, thus making Gyaku Kaiten, and then as the technique is being whipped back you will rotate the hip back to assist with drawing back the hand.

Shindo Kaiten

Shindo Kaiten is the vibration that is used by the hip when executing a technique. Again, many trains of though when doing this power generation and many ways to do it exist. Some will do the “vibration” similar in motion to Gyaku Kaiten or Jun Kaiten, others will wiggle, some move the hand the opposite way from the hip movement then try to catch up to the arm movement with the hip and “piston” the technique. Shindo Kaiten also has one other factor that some groups do not focus on. The vibration is not just with the hips, the support leg also pushes into the ground to generate drive, and the arm must punch out fast and focus the whole body on impact.
