Legislature returns for special session The General Assembly returned Thursday for what turned into a long one-day special session, though it did not take up any bills that directly affect state employees or retirees. The return did, however, give SEANC members from the Greenville area (pictured below) a chance to come to Raleigh and voice their concerns over the recently executed merger between ECU Physicians (a state entity) and Vidant Health. The merger will give away state assets and jeopardize the future and stability of 1,200 state employees. It essentially gives Vidant a monopoly over health services in Eastern North Carolina and will dramatically weaken competition in a community that desperately relies upon affordable and accessible healthcare. Legislators will return on Aug. 18 to work on redistricting or any other bills they see fit to address. SEANC’s lobbyists will be on hand throughout to make sure your voice is heard on any issue that may arise.
