Retirees to save up to $2,600 annually on dependent coverage StateTreasurerDaleFolwellandtheStateHealthPlanBoardofTrustees announcedinmid-JuneanewcontractwithHumanaforMedicareAdvantageplans thatwillsaveretireefamiliesupto$220amonth!
BeginningJan.1,2021,Medicare-eligiblememberswillcontinuetoenjoypremiumfreecoveragethroughthenewplansfromHumana,whileeligibledependentswill havemonthlypremiumsofonly$4fortheMedicareAdvantageBasePlan.
ThechangewillsavetheStateHealthPlanmorethan$600millionoverthreeyears.
AllmemberscurrentlycoveredunderUnitedHealthcarewillbemovedtoHumana beginningJan.1,2021.MemberswillcontinuetohavethechoiceoftheBaseor EnhancedPlanunderHumanaaswellastheoptionofthe70/30Plan,whichis administeredbyBlueCrossNorthCarolina.

Whilepensionplansalloverthecountryhavebeenleftreelingfromthe worsteconomiccrisissincetheGreatDepression,NorthCarolina’splan hasgainedaround4%andnowsitsatover$105billionthanksto Folwell'sconservativeapproach.Healsoputhiscareeronthelinefor stateemployeesandretireesinlastyear’sfightovertheClearPricing Project,whichwouldbringtransparencyandcostsavingstotheState HealthPlan.

Intheend,itisthenon-facultystaffthatwillsuffermost.TheUNCBoardof Governorsmadethedecisiontoopen,andadministrationswerechargedwith implementationofrulestokeeppeoplesafe.Somestudentschosenotto followtherules–gatheringinlargegroupswithoutmasksandbringingthe virusinfromoff-campusactivities.Facultymembersmadethepushtomoveto onlineclasses.
Nownon-faculty,whohadnosayatall,arelefttocleanupthemess,both literallyandintheirownliveswiththeprospectsoflostjobsandhealthcare.
