At the time of writing the weather is very changeable, however, luckily some warm weather is lingering on the horizon, so maybe our summer will end on a scorcher this year! Life feels like it’s returning to some kind of normality, with many clubs and organisations that ceased during the pandemic now back up and running, which is great news! It’s Artwave this month, and there are various open houses and galleries in and around Seaford for you to visit and be inspired by, plus articles throughout this issue and listings on the What’s On pages 130 to 133. Also in September, the Bringing Tide Mills Back to Life project reaches it’s climax, with a week of immersive experiences for everyone to get involved with – don’t miss out, see page 12! We have a report on the successful Greener Seaford Climate and Eco Fair that was held in August (page 4), plus an update on this year’s Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail (page 117). A Greener Seaford Climate & Eco Fair More than 40 local organisations with concern for the environment and climate change at their core got together at the Salts recreation ground on Sunday 1st August, unified in their zeal to undo the damage we have already done to our world and offering their vision of how we could work towards a positive future. The fair was held with the aim of drawing attention to the urgent need to mitigate the effects of climate change, recognising that the Seaford area’s four miles of coastline are particularly at threat from violent storms and isolation caused by flooding of the Ouse and Cuckmere rivers. The Alliance’s message was: ‘In the wake of the terrible news [of flooding] from Germany and the Benelux countries it is becoming increasingly

So under the umbrella title Seaford Environmental Alliance, the groups came together to plan a packed afternoon of events, talks and activities for all ages, with Seaford Town Council partnering this call to action against climate change and offering advice on what we can all do to reduce our environmental impact. The result was a jolly, family-oriented event which delivered its message to hundreds of visitors with thought-provoking ideas and information, colour and humour. Items including plants, bric-a-brac, books, soaps, fruit and veg were temptingly on display but, instead of being for sale, were all given away. Donations were accepted but not asked for.

Whether it is driving less often, eating less meat, not flying or simply thinking twice before buying something you might not need, every small action can make a huge difference when multiplied by the whole population.’ Groups like Seaford Community Partnership (SCP), Plastic-free Seaford, Trees for Seaford and Martello Rotary all have existing ‘green’ projects, and in the last year Seaford Environmental Alliance and On the Verge have come into being. In this time frame, SCP was invited to take part in the Ouse Valley CARES project – a potential £2.5m Lottery Fund grant. Added to all this,

In order to bring home the message that there should be no waste and no single-use plastic employed, a decision was taken not to sell food, so what an excuse for picnics with the challenge to make them single-use plastic free. Children and adults were entertained with story-telling in teepees, and in another tent speakers like Lara Huege and Martin Meadows talked about tackling climate change. The fair was organised by Gemma and Simon McFarlane and others, who invited people like SCP chair Keith Blackburn to boost awareness about Seaford CARES projects. Charlie Grimble and Stephanie Mills were on hand to discuss the

purpose of the Ouse Valley Nature Reserve Project and why community awareness needs to be raised. Hilary Miflin explained how schools could use the Cliff Gardens Climate Change garden, Dinah Pryor talked about the purpose of On the Verge and its nature streets and sea meadows projects, Margery Diamand spoke about the achievements of Trees for Seaford and gave away free baby oak trees, and Simon McFarlane boosted the benefits of cycling. James Meek explained what Seaford Town Council’s Climate Emergency working group is doing and Martello Rotary president Andy Meade described what the club hopes to achieve with its local green spaces project. The organisations which took part in this communal event should be very proud of themselves. Not only did they emphasise the importance of each one of us doing what we can, but they demonstrated how it is possible to work together for the common good. Bike maintenance was demonstrated and Seaford’s cycle rickshaws provided rides. SCIP was there with art activities, and bugs were hunted while scientific demos entertained and informed, plus there were lots of games to amuse young and old alike.

The Mayor of Seaford hosts Civic Service 2021

The Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed, officially celebrated his induction as the 2021-2022 Mayor at a Civic Service that was hosted by Seaford Baptist Church on Saturday 31st July. Many distinguished local dignitaries, representatives from local charities and members of the public were able to attend and support the Mayor’s first official event of the year. The service was led by the Mayor’s Chaplain and Minister of Seaford Baptist Church, the Revd Andy Machin. Thankfully, as restrictions had been lifted, the venue allowed for a larger congregation to attend, but still had Covid safety measures in place. The Service included: Prayers of Thanksgiving; a Reading by Freeman of the Town, Mr Laurie Holland; an interview with Julia Hancock, Chair of Trustees of the Youth Counselling Project; and a Mayor’s Address. A Cornish cream tea was served afterwards in the Church Hall. The event was very well attended by regional and local dignitaries. In attendance were: the Lord Lieutenant and his wife, Sir Peter Field and Lady Field; The High Sheriff, Mr Miles Jenner and Mrs Jenner; Freemen of the Town, Mr Laurie Holland, Mr Keith Blackburn and his wife; The Serjeant at Mace, Mr Peter White; Seaford Young Mayor, Joe Lacey, and Deputy Young Mayor, Erin Franklin; the Chair of East Sussex County Council, Cllr Pragnell; the Chair of Lewes District Council, Cllr Christine Brett; the Mayor of Brighton, Cllr Alan Robins; the Mayor of Eastbourne, Cllr Pat Rodohan; the Deputy Mayor of Peacehaven, Cllr Gloria Hill; the Mayor of Newhaven, Cllr Lesley Boniface, and; the Mayor of Hailsham, and the Lady Mayoress Cllr Paul Holbrook. Other guests included representatives of the emergency services, local service organisations and local charity representatives from the Mayor’s Charity Initiative and members of the public. The Mayor said: “Many of the congregation commented to me how they appreciated being together and their enjoyment of the freedom to sing aloud traditional hymns and modern songs. Our Civic Service was one of the final engagements for the Lord Lieutenant and

one of the first for the High Sheriff. The Service was well supported by Chairs and Mayors of neighbouring towns, parishes and local authorities and by service organisations and charities in the town. The Revd Andy Machin, Mayor’s Chaplain shared a thought-provoking reflection on peace and security overcoming fear and distress. I took the opportunity in my Mayor’s Address to highlight several of my themes for the year: Stronger Together; the individual choices that can be made protect our environment and the Mayors Charities Initiative. Andy Machin interviewed Julia Hancock, Chair of Trustees of The Youth Counselling Project who spoke movingly about their work. Her charity had been nominated by the Church to receive the retiring offering. My thanks are due to the ladies of the Seaford Inner Wheel Club who served an excellent Cornish Cream tea. This was made possible by the generous donation of their products to Seaford Baptist Church by Morrisons of Seaford and Rodda’s of Cornwall. I was delighted that the lively Service followed by a Cornish Cream Tea resulted in a happy buzz of conversation around the tea tables and in friendships renewed.’ With thanks to the generosity of the congregation, a retiring collection of £389 was collected for The Youth Counselling Project. Lewes WASPI We are back providing the full Seaford Town 120 Service. The circular route runs every 30 minutes (except for driver breaks) 5½ days per week and covers Morrisons, Marine Parade (Edinburgh Road), Hawth Hill loop, Hurdis Road, Hill Rise, Clementine Avenue, Beacon Road, Station Approach, Morrisons. On Sundays we run service 26 linking Seaford to Eastbourne via Alfriston; and the hourly circular service 47 Cuckmere Valley Ramblerbus with several pick-ups and drop-offs in Seaford. The usual pre-covid timetables now apply to all services. Concessionary fares accepted. Everyone in our organisation is a volunteer

The Ombudsman’s findings of maladministration gives hope to approximately 3.8 million women in the UK, 250,000 women across the South East constituencies and 6,500 women in the Lewes constituency. We, the 1950s women’s campaigners in the South East have issued a qualified welcome to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s findings of maladministration against the Department for Work and Pensions and are calling for a fair and fast solution. Approximately 3.8 million women born in the 1950s will be affected by the Ombudsman’s decision. The Ombudsman has ruled that the Department was guilty of maladministration from 2005 onwards when it failed to contact 1950s-born women in person to inform them of the changes to their State Pension Age after its own research revealed that the majority of women did not know their State Pension Age had changed, despite a publicity campaign. We are very pleased that, after a long and thorough investigation, the Ombudsman has found that maladministration took place when we were not properly notified of the changes to our State Pension Age. This is a very welcome step in the right direction. We hope the Ombudsman will now complete the next stage and decide that an injustice has taken place that deserves compensation. The government will then have a moral duty to put things right. We are looking for a fair and fast solution. I am delighted that it has finally been recognised how badly 1950s women have been treated. They paid National Insurance all their working lives on the understanding that they could retire at 60, only to be told at the last minute (some no notice at all) they would have to wait several more years for their pensions. Now is the time for MPs from all parties to work together to find a compensatory solution including Stephen Crabb and Simon Hart. The Ombudsman’s final ruling will apply to all 1950s born women affected by the changes, not just those whose cases are with the Ombudsman. Seaford Photographic Society Welcome to Seaford Photographic Society’s first newsletter of the new 2021/22 season. Our first meeting is on Friday 3rd September at our usual venue, the Martello Room at Seaford’s Con Club, Crouch Lane, BN25 1PU. This will be a Welcome Back meeting and AGM. We are all looking forward to meeting in person again for the first time in around 16 months. There will obviously be some Covid restrictions in place so please have a look on our website where they will be explained. As I write this, at the beginning of August, we are looking at the possibility of having some sort of hybrid meetings where we meet in person as usual, but also link to Zoom. This will enable us to continue to have speakers and judges from further afield, who can’t travel to Seaford. It will also enable some of our members to enter competitions and watch lectures from home if they can’t make it to the venue. We are still investigating the technical aspects of all this and it might be that we have two tiers of membership – ‘full’ for those who come along in person and some sort of reduced price ‘digital only’ membership for those only attending online. This will obviously have to exclude some meetings such as workshops and social events. Full details will be shown on our website but it might take a few meetings before we know how well this will work. Our programme for the season has now been finalised and, as usual, features a wide range of competitions, lectures, illustrated talks, workshops and practical evenings. Coming up later this month we have the first Print Competition on 10th September (Round 1 of the Print League), assessed by one of our regular judges, Bob Webzel ARPS, EFIAP from Rottingdean. The following week, on the 17th we have two presentations by club members: Understanding your Digital Camera by our Chairman Colin Mitchell LRPS, and ON1 Editing Software by our Digital Secretary Simon Rigby. These should be very useful, particularly for our newer members or anybody thinking of attending for the first time. The final meeting in September, on the 24th is

the first competition for Projected Digital Images (PDI League Round 1), judged by Paul Parkinson LRPS CPAGB BPE5*. We have had a couple of informal set-subject competitions over the summer break, to encourage us to get out with our cameras, and the winners were decided by club members voting for their favourites. The first was ‘Slow Shutter Speed’ and Chris Dawson took both first and second places with two very different images taken at Splash Point. The second competition was to create a ‘diptych’ showing two images side by side, before and after editing. Anna-Marie Armstrong won this one and Liz Fitzsimons took second place.

Bringing Tide Mills back to life!

This month sees the culmination of the Tide Mills Project with the Heritage Celebratory Event, 22nd – 26th September. LYT Productions and the team behind the project are so excited to welcome visitors to the site for this immersive experience. Open for everybody to attend or take part, it will be free and accessible – and there will also be online elements too. The deserted remains of Tide Mills village, which flourished in the early 1800s and was abandoned in 1940, are now part of an atmospheric coastal stretch – a designated Local Wildlife Site in the South Downs National Park – at Bishopstone, between Seaford and Newhaven in East Sussex. The unique Tide Mills village was built to house families of workers at the important tide mill, constructed 1761-8. In 1906, the Marconi Radio Company set up a wireless station to report on cross-channel shipping; and a seaplane base was here in World War I. Also still visible are archaeological vestiges of 1920s stables for lame racehorses and the Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital for boys. One can imagine past lives. Through their research, the organisers and historians for the project have made many interesting discoveries and contacts, including former residents of Tide Mills,

such as Ted Hartwell, who spent time at the Marine Hospital and Dickie Dale, son of the stables owner. They have given their histories first-hand. The Tide Mills Project is sharing the unique and diverse history of Tide Mills with new audiences through a variety of creative and artistic disciplines. Nationally acclaimed artists, designers, sculptors and musicians are working with local community members of all ages to bring Tide Mills, quite literally, ‘back to life’. As well as the artistic installations, there will also be historical guided tours, a range of creative and educational workshops and musical performances on site during the week, plus an exhibition and projections at the Crypt Gallery in Seaford. First, an enormous debt of gratitude to Seaford Town Council, whose Financial Community Grant Scheme has awarded The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) £2,000 from its £15,000 grant budget. It is gratifying to have the pressing needs of local young people recognised so generously. Twenty-one organisations made grant applications totalling more than £40,000. The Project’s money will go towards providing therapy for children attending Seaford schools who have mental health difficulties. Individual children are normally offered 10 sessions each, at a cost of nearly £500 per block. In the coming academic year TYCP expects to try to help 80 students, some of whom may be offered a place in a pilot group session if this is considered to be more beneficial than one-to-one counselling. Covid-19 has impacted to increase the need for therapy so it is imperative that the necessary funding is gained in order to intervene swiftly to improve the life chances of vulnerable young people. TYCP also aims to support and develop family strengths, to build strong and lasting relationships, to equip young people to cope with challenges and to facilitate better school attendance, behaviour and educational attainment. self-esteem, sexuality and gender issues, bullying and exam stress. If not treated these could result in poor educational achievement, anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol misuse, teenage pregnancy, involvement in criminal activities and increased mental health problems. So TYCP is delighted that not only the Town Council but charitable organisations in the town are helping it by donating money, fund-raising and by raising public awareness. The town’s two Rotary clubs for example are focusing on TYCP, and the Project was delighted to meet promenaders along the seafront during the Rotary Club of Seaford’s Over the Rainbow Walk, which raised nearly £700 for the organisations taking part. A team from TYCP donned logo-ed T-shirts again at the Martello to promote Martello Rotary Club’s Community Calendar, sales from which, like last year, will benefit TYCP and the RNLI Newhaven. Martello Rotary is also presenting TYCP with the £250 profits from running a bar at a wedding at Florence House in Southdown Road. Seaford Community Cinema has adopted TYCP as its charity for the year and will be represented alongside TYCP at the Mayor’s Charity Day event at Martello Fields on Sunday 5th September, on the evening of which the cinema is showing two films at Florence House, see page 13. Lastly, TYCP was, at the time of writing, set to benefit from the retiring collection after the Town Council’s Civic Service at the Baptist Church hosted by the Mayor, Cllr Rodney Reed, and attended by TYCP chairwoman Julia Hancock. NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB We hope that everyone is keeping well and is slowly getting back into the routine of things now that restrictions have been eased. Over the past few months, we have been pleased to assist various groups with funding.

The Fisherman’s Memorial Fund

We were pleased to be able to give a donation to this fund and our Lion President and Lion Treasurer had the pleasure of meeting Jackie Woolford, the mother of Robert Morley, one of the men who lost his life when the Joanna C went down off the Sussex coast in November last year. The memorial will be primarily to honour Robert Morley and Adam Harper who were on the Joanna C and Darren Brown who was on Our Sarah Jane who tragically lost their lives whilst working at sea. However, they are hoping that the memorial will enable all those who have lost loved ones at sea to have somewhere permanent they can go to, to remember them. Sussex Elderly Care

We were able to fund the purchase of digital tablets for the Carers to use with their clients so that they could speak to their loved ones on Zoom and Facetime, and be able to see their grandchildren grow up throughout the lockdown periods.

Northease Manor School

The school is a co-educational independent school nestled in the Downs just south of Lewes, for students primarily with Autism and/or Dyslexia. With specialist staff and resources, they offer high-quality teaching, fully integrated occupational speech and language therapy, supported by their high-quality pastoral support team. They are a registered charity, which means they do not have commercial owners and rely very much on charitable donations and were very grateful for the donation from the NP&S Lions with which they purchased some new laptops. Their students were very appreciative, and it will make such a difference to their education.

We are extremely grateful to all those individuals who support us throughout the year either by volunteering or donating. Without your help we would not be able to help organisations like the above.

Seaford Monthly Beach Clean

Our members and Friends of Lions continue to do their bit at the monthly Seaford Beach Clean, organised by Plastic Free Seaford. It is held on the first Sunday of every month throughout the year starting at 10am at locations along Seaford beach. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page @NPSLIONS for more information.

September’s arts and cultural scene, compiled by Andrea Hargreaves, offers a tempting variety of festival, film, art, heritage and music. Latest Covid guidelines apply.

Outdoor fun

Seahaven Pride Family Festival is taking place on Sunday 29th August at Martello Fields from 11am until 9pm, tickets from www.tickettailor.com, and the Mayor’s Charity Day takes place at the same venue on Sunday 5th September. Organising that event are Martello and Seaford Rotary Clubs, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions, Seaford Bonfire and the National Coastwatch Institution, allowing more than 40 local charities to take part. The event opens at 10am with music and sports demos from noon.

Cinema

Florence House, at the top of Southdown Road, is opening its grounds, courtesy of Mairin Colleary, to another of its popular open-air film evenings put on by Seaford Community Cinema on Sunday 5th September. Please note that the times have been revised since previously advertised. For children, gates open for A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (U) at 5pm for the 5.30pm showing, while for mums, dads and anyone else who loves a bit of a sing-along, gates open at 7.30pm for the 8pm screening of extravaganza The Greatest Showman (PG). Bring a picnic, something to sit on and, maybe, a mac because the show will go on whatever the weather. There will also be a

bar benefitting this year’s cinema charity The Youth Counselling Project, Holy Cow ices and Clubby’s Hot & Cold Snacks. Tickets from the TIC, www.seafordcinema. org or on the gate. It’s back to the Barn Theatre on Friday 10th September at 7.30pm, but you might be forgiven for thinking you are still at Florence House thanks to the gorgeous clifftop settings in Summerland (12) (photo above). This film stars Gemma Arterton, the Coastguard Cottages and the Seven Sisters masquerading as the white cliffs of Dover in wartime. Like Summerland, the next film, on Friday 24th September at 7.30pm, has the travails of a young boy at its heart. Instead of the evacuee in Summerland, this time the focus in Minari (12) is on a South Korean boy whose family emigrate to rural Arkansas. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, it was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director Oscars.

Music

Trumpeter Sue Richardson is featuring at Splashpoint Jazz on Wednesday 8th September from 7pm at The View, Seaford Head Golf Club. And go to St Leonards Church in Church Street on Saturday 18th September at 1pm to be entertained by violinist Adriana Cristea.

Art

The Crypt Gallery has some interesting exhibitions this month, starting with Brian Ixer, Stefan Much and Amanda Lewis-Clements in the Cuckmere Room from Saturday 11th September to Sunday 19th September. Ixer’s paintings in oils, acrylics and pastels reflect his love of land, sea, nature and tranquillity, and Much and Lewis-Clements are Sussex-based graphic designer/ artists inspired by local landscapes and the natural environment. Meanwhile in the Flint Gallery local artists Carol Trimbee and Chris Hesketh are staging an exhibition called Just The Two of Us. Richard K Potter is at the Crypt from Sunday 26th September until Sunday 3rd October with an exhibition about the natural environment and our place within it. Tide Mills Project

The month’s big event is the long-awaited Tide Mills Project, celebrating the tidally, operated mill and its village. Working with local artists and collaborating with local people, the not-for-profit LYT Productions in Seaford is aiming to bring Tide Mills back to life from Monday 20th to Sunday 26th September. Expect a sound, colour and light-filled sensory – and free – experience. The Tide Mills Project has commissioned 17 local artists, including designers, sculptors, poets, musicians, writers and other creatives, to work alongside the local community to research and explore the history of Tide Mills. All tours must be booked in advance via tidemillsproject.uk.

C RY P T GALLERY Launching the Crypt Gallery Creativity Showcase

To mark the 2021 global Create Day and our local open studios event, Artwave, the Crypt Gallery is launching an online creativity showcase. We would love to receive photos and videos of you or the people around you being creative. We are not putting boundaries around what we mean by creativity so whether its painting, textile work, wood turning or flower arranging we want your images (moving or otherwise) to add to a new link on our website. Our aim is to feature the breadth and quality of artists and makers in Seaford and the surrounding area, whatever their status and experience, from professional to hobbyist, and along with your images and your name, we would also like one paragraph describing what is being depicted. There is no deadline as such, but we are looking forward to launching this new community Initiative on 4th September, Create Day, so please start sending in your photos and videos now. However, we will continue to add images after 4th September so if it takes longer than you thought, don’t panic! We are really excited about this showcase and collating an archive of artists and makers who are part of The Crypt community.

Artwave Crypt Gallery is taking part in Artwave with exhibitions in both the Cuckmere and Flint Gallery from 11th – 19th September. Brian uses oils, acrylics and pastels reflect his love, land, sea, nature and tranquillity in his paintings and Stefan and Amanda, Sussex based graphic designers and artists, will be exhibiting their prints inspired by local landscapes and the natural environment in the Cuckmere Room from, 10am – 4pm daily, Seaford artist, Carol Trimbee is exhibiting a wide variety of her multi-media art, including

sculpture, textiles and paintings whilst local potter, Chris Hesketh, is exhibiting a wide range of beautiful ceramic animals and birds.

The Medieval Undercroft at the Crypt If you go to our website (thecryptgallery. com) you will see a new page dedicated to the history of the Medieval Undercroft, a wonderful space full of atmosphere. The information, etching and old photograph were gleaned from a number of sources but we are sure there must be more history out there somewhere. So, if you have any information or know of where additional details can be found, we would really like to know. Just drop us a line at get.info@thecryptgallery.com or pop a note through the letter box and we’ll be in touch. In the meantime, the Undercroft will be part of the national Heritage Open Days event this year (heritage opendays.org.uk) and will be open to visitors on 11th and 12th September. There will also be two exhibitions in the gallery on that weekend so it will be well worth a trip down to Church Street.

The Tide Mills Heritage Project The Crypt will be collaborating with the Tide Mills Project to host a short exhibition on 21st and 22nd September. Historic material, including artefacts found at the site and prints of archive photographs, will be on display to give a taster of some of the fascinating stories associated with Tide Mills. Amongst other features over the two days, Filmspot will be projecting work created at the recent animation workshops, held at The Crypt and The Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven, and filmed interviews with some of the interesting and diverse participants in the Tide Mills

Open Mic Night at the Crypt We are happy to announce another of our popular Open Mic Poetry Evenings in association with Seahaven Poets. As ever it promises to be a fun, quirky and exciting evening in the intimate atmosphere of the Crypt’s medieval undercroft. All poets can be sure of a warm welcome. The event will take place on Saturday 4th September at 7.30pm. BRASSPOINT SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS Based in Seaford, we opened in 2014, in the first week we had three students and one of those was my own son. There are now around 85 students passing through the school each week. Young Artists

Our Young Artist’s classes are for 4 years – 12 years. We have set projects that allow the artists to experiment with a range of materials and methods, and the freedom to develop their own ideas. I never cease to be impressed by their art and how prepared they are to try new approaches.

GCSE and A Level

The GCSE in Art is for students who are either being home educated or have chosen art as an extracurricular option outside of their main school. We have A Level classes for students who have completed their GCSE and we also have classes for mature students who either want to reignite their art practice or are considering art for the first time.

Adult Workshops

We also offer workshops that are not attached to any qualification. This Autumn term we are taking on landscape painting, using the amazing local landscape to inspire and inform our progress. Weather permitting

we go outdoors for sketching then back to the studio where we try out a few approaches and different mediums, from acrylics and oils to linocut and collage. Who’s Who in Seaford?

Tina Bacon, President of Seaford Afternoon Flower Club Tina has lived in Seaford for 16 years and has been the President of Seaford Afternoon Flower Club for five years. She was privately educated and then attended Wallington County School for Girls aged 10. Now retired, Tina worked for two banks and the civil service. She also worked as a doctor’s receptionist, sold fashion and lingerie, was a waitress and worked in a sandwich bar making 36 varieties of sandwiches on five different types of bread! More recently she was the clerk at the local Weight Watchers club. Not knowing anyone when she moved to Seaford, Tina went to St Peter’s Church where she made friends and with them, joined the Afternoon Flower Club where she became the treasurer for five years. She is also a member of the Parochial Church Council and has been a member of the WI and Mother’s Union. Tina is widowed and has two children, Rachel and Mark, and six grandchildren. Since 2016, Tina has fostered four dogs for The Cinnamon Trust, currently fostering Rolo, a Jack Russell/Yorkshire Terrier cross. What does your role involve? Meeting and greeting members, guests, visitors and demonstrators. Giving the vote of thanks at the end of the meeting. Trying to make everyone feel welcomed and valued, taking the chair at the AGM. What do you most enjoy about your role? The social aspect of the Club, watching beautiful arrangements being made and learning tips to improve my efforts at flower arranging. What do you like best about Seaford? I like the friendliness of people, particularly on the town buses. They are like villages on wheels. I love my garden and the good air quality. Watching the sea changing colour as the weather alters is a way of putting everything in its proper place in the scheme of things. What is your favourite piece of music? One Day More from Les Miserables.

What is your favourite film? Last Holiday (with Queen Latifah, a feel good movie). What book are you reading at the moment? Have His Carcase by Dorothy L. Sayers. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Perfect happiness is being with my children and grandchildren. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Walking down the street with my skirt tucked into my pants. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford and why? I like having lunch with a friend at the Grumpy Chef, and dining at Olliver’s. Which living person do you most admire? H.M. The Queen What makes you sad? Cruelty in all its forms and loneliness. What words or phrases do you most overuse? Sorry, you are on my blind side, as I bump into people. How do you relax? Arranging flowers at home, listening to audio books. Above and beyond for Raystede Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill of abseiling down a cliff face, the amazing sea views, that heart-stopping moment as you step over the edge and the exhilaration when you reach the ground? Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare in Ringmer is looking for brave animal lovers to take part in a breathtaking abseil off Peacehaven Cliffs on Saturday 25th September. The charity organised a similar event last year and supporter, Noreen, took part to celebrate her 70th birthday. She chose to support the charity after adopting her dog, Sonny, from Raystede nearly four years ago. Noreen initially fostered Sonny and soon realised she just couldn’t part with him, so adopted him permanently, and hes now a very important member of their family. All safety gear is provided and expert instructors will be there to help participants complete their challenge.

COVID safety measures will also be in place. Registration is £20 with a commitment to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship, with all funds going directly towards providing rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and sanctuary for the animals in Raystede’s care. 50th Year Celebrations at Seaford Osteopathic Clinic! Seaford Osteopathic Clinic began with its founder – Mike Lemon – who graduated from the British School of Osteopathy on 12th July 1971 and was elected to the General Council and Register of Osteopaths on 29th September 1971. This was the beginning of Seaford Osteopathic Clinic at 23 Sutton Park Road. Mike handed the Osteopathic clinic over to Derrick Retief in 1986. Derrick carried on running the clinic until he introduced Jitendra Vara, the current Clinic Director and Osteopath in 1988. Jitendra said: ‘I first joined the clinic in 1988, qualifying from the European School of Osteopathy, as a young man planning to stay only two years. Now, over thirty years later, I am still here.’ A lot has changed from the early years when osteopathy was considered to be an ‘alternative therapy’; the medical profession often struggled to give it recognition. During this time Jitendra has applied the most basic concepts of any medical profession taking a case history, examining the patient, communicating the diagnosis and treating the patient with appropriate care. These fundamentals have enabled the reputation of the clinic to grow within the local community and become one of the largest and longest established clinics and centres of excellence in the county, treating musculo-skeletal conditions to cranial osteopathy for babies. In 1992, Jitendra was asked to join Sussex University medical centre to work with General Practitioners with NHS funding. Working closely with the GPs, helped them to understand the extent to which osteopathy could help treat conditions such as neck pain, repetitive strain injuries and headaches. As a result, referrals have increased over the years with local GPs and orthopaedic surgeons regularly referring patients to the clinic. In 2009 NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) recommended osteopathy for treatment of lower back pain.

Martello Rotary getting back to business As the COVID restrictions loosen, Martello Rotarians are stepping up a gear or three to help Seaford community also return to normality by six ways of enriching our community’s life.

Seaford Community 2022 Calendars

The 2022 Seaford Community Calendar is now on sale. Last year, despite the virus we raised over £1,200 split between our two charities: RNLI Newhaven and The Youth Counselling project. This year the charities remain the same. This is a Seaford Calendar, using first-class photos donated by local photographers and printed by Tansley’s. There are two sizes available at £8 and £6 and you can buy envelopes for them from shops at 50p.You can buy yours at the following Seaford establishments: Badger Inks; The Secret Wardrobe; JXP Mortgages; Flowers & Pots Boutique; Barwells Solicitors; The Wellington Hotel; Fixed in a Flash in Seaford. In Newhaven they are available at the RNLI Shop, Lifeboat House, West Quay; and Newhaven Cards. All these businesses donate their time to sell them for us, and we are grateful to them for their support. We often have a stall at the East Dean Village market in the Village Hall on Wednesday mornings.

Support Our Seaford Charities’ Day

Support our Seaford Charities’, a day of fun and fundraising, goes ahead on the Martello Fields on Sunday 5th September from 10am to 4pm, with the main programme starting at 12 noon. This is the result of a year of planning between five of the town’s service organisations during the year’s delay occasioned by the coronavirus restrictions. There will be sports and music to enjoy, more than 30 charity stalls to support, and our own Tavern in the Tent and food stalls. There will be a family picnic area and many activities to engage the children, including face painting and a ‘tots bubble mini marathon’. Travelers using Seaford Railway Station will see the renewed and revitalised planters provided by Martello Rotary. As well as a fine floral display, each has a colourful banner broadcasting our support for the

Seaford Charities Day, in order to maximise attendance at the event. This is part of our work with the Seaford to Brighton South Communities Rail Partnership.

Greener Seaford event Sunday 1st August at The Salts.

Martello Rotary was pleased to support the work of Seaford Environmental Alliance and Seaford Community Partnership at this recent event. The team helped to publicise the Lottery-funded Climate Change projects that will enable the town to attract more Lottery funding next year to help mitigate the impact of climate change. The projects we are assisting involve – encouraging the use of the town’s footpath network, linking it to the extensive network of bridleways and footpaths in the surrounding South Downs National Park and extending the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve so that the whole of the lower Ouse estuary becomes able to be enjoyed by all the surrounding communities. A third project aims to develop community involvement to enrich the habitats of our Local Green Spaces which were safeguarded in the Seaford Neighbourhood Plan. This is described below in the next section.

Following the successful canvassing of residents’ and school pupils’ opinions, we are now working with various stakeholders, looking at the legal ramifications, the creation of several ‘Friends of ’ groups and commencing design and planning of our green spaces. On 5th July, Martello Rotary’s Tavern in the Tent team sprang into action to provide refreshments for a wedding party at Florence House, Southdown Road. Trees for Seaford Tree Trail

Wow! This month our multi-skilled Trees for Seaford volunteers have been branching out all over the place! After last month’s article we were delighted to get some ideas for our planned ‘Heritage Tree Trail’ and are really enjoying stories about people’s favourite trees. Do keep sending these in – we really want to hear your stories and ideas, and see your photographs.

Tree Care

Our community group has been lucky to get input and advice from local and national tree experts. Following this advice, we decided to pilot woodchip mulch for some of our saplings, in our monthly tree care session. Using a mulch of woodchip, bark or compost should help retain moisture, prevent competition from grasses and really boost growth in young trees. Thanks so much to Climpson Bros tree surgeons for the free woodchip and Seaford Town Council for ongoing support... and of course our hard-working volunteer members, who were joined this month by some new town councillor members. We’ll monitor the trees to see how well the woodchip is retained in a street tree setting, and if practical, will use this method for new plantings or where trees need a bit of extra help. Climate Fair

In early August we were all busy at the A Greener Seaford Climate and Eco Fair. Many thanks to Seaford Environmental Alliance, for organising this fantastic event. It was wonderful to meet so many people passionate about planting trees, wild flowers and hedges, and learn about other groups working in Seaford to improve our environment. At the event we rehomed a number of trees, enjoyed some rather lovely homemade tree-shaped biscuits and talked a lot about the benefits of trees.

Our partner volunteer group On the Verge was also incredibly busy, talking to people about our pilot nature streets, our work with the council to increase diversity in our verges and green spaces, not to mention our bug hunts and planned wildflower counts. Lots of wildflower seeds and plants were swapped or given away so we look forward to more flowers and more pollinators and wildlife appearing round Seaford in the coming year! Up in the children’s field, some of our volunteers ran a workshop to paint our famous pebble creatures, to help encourage everyone to look for wildlife in our verges and gardens! We also spotted a bug hunt going on in the longer grass, thanks to Seaford Natural History Society. It’s so important that we all look out for insects in our green spaces! Finally, we were asking people to record their wildlifefriendly gardens on SEA’s Metre Square for wildlife website so that we can update our Green Pathway map. It was so heartening to hear what our visitors of all ages were doing for wildlife. INTO THE LIGHT: ALCISTON CHURCH & CHURCHYARD

A new book about Alciston’s history The manor of Alciston is remarkable. It has had only had two owners in a thousand years. It was owned and run by Battle Abbey from the Conquest until 1539; after that it became the property of the Gage family. That’s a thousand years of well-recorded history. The main features of the feudal village, the church, clergy house, manor house, dovecote and tithe barn, are all still standing. The medieval cottages have been rebuilt, but the forge, inn and shops have gone. The small church has a lovely light interior, refreshingly free of stained glass. Unusually there are no old monuments apart from two paving stones dedicated to William and John Meeres (1623 and 1641). There were more monuments in the eighteenth century, but someone removed them. Who? Why? In the churchyard there is a memorial to the historian C. V. Wedgwood. The apparently empty

centre of the churchyard is a reminder that many people were buried in unmarked graves. A blocked half-window tells us that the east end of the church has been shortened, and an archaeological dig in the churchyard showed that in the twelfth century the chancel was 3m longer. The east end collapsed and was rebuilt, further west, in about 1480. Deeper in the ground, the same dig uncovered the footings of a semicircular apse dating to the late Saxon period. Like several other churches Rodney Castleden and Ann Murray have investigated in the area, Alciston church had a Saxon predecessor. Among other curiosities, Alciston has five scratch dials on the stone jambs of the blocked priest’s door. These small medieval sun-dials helped priests take services at the right times. Oddly, they are full circles, marking the hours through the night – when the sun never shines! This new book tells the story of Alciston, its church and churchyard. It lists all the inscriptions in the church and churchyard. Ann and Rodney hope that their book will be a useful stepping stone for anyone pursuing family history, or just wanting to know more about local history, and more about this fascinating place. There are plans of the church and churchyard, as well as indexes, all to help you to find the inscriptions – or a lost relative. Seaford Town Council’s Grant Scheme The Town Council has granted just under £15,000 as part of its annual grants scheme to benefit the town and its residents. Seaford Town Council is pleased to announce that following the 2021-22 grant process, thirteen local organisations have been awarded financial grants totalling £14,914. All grants will directly benefit the residents of Seaford and the town itself. The Town Council would like to thank these organisations for their continued hard work and contribution to the town, and is delighted to be able to assist and support these organisations where possible. Ambulance Responder Team was awarded £500 towards the maintenance of its 4x4 team vehicle for one year. Bishopstone United Charities was awarded £2,000 towards the cost of re-building the stone chimneys on the Grade II listed Almshouse dating from 1856. CTLA Community Transport was awarded £1,000 towards supporting the continuance of Seaford Dial-aRide service at its pre-COVID level of activity. Cuckmere Buses was awarded £2,000 towards the ongoing annual running costs and to avoid deficits. Down Syndrome Development Trust was awarded £1,000 towards supporting six Seaford-based children with Downs Syndrome and their families to access their diverse range of programmes for a period of twelve months. to be used as a community hub. Newhaven Lifeboat Station was awarded £1,500 towards the station’s running costs including crew kit, training, repairs and maintenance of the station and boat. Seaford Bonfire Society was awarded £1,100 towards the first aid cover being provided at the 2021 bonfire event. Seaford Community Partnership was awarded £400 towards their administrative costs. Seaford Cricket Club was awarded £864 towards the purchase of a custom-made boundary rope trolley. St Wilfrid’s Hospice was awarded £1,100 towards the purchase of diagnostic kits for community nurses working in Seaford, which will include blood pressure machines, thermometers, urinalysis sticks and blood sugar testing devices. Teddy Treats Children’s Charity was awarded £1,000 towards supporting local children to develop creative talents with Teddy Treats Top Talent Sponsorship and to continue to provide toys at Christmas and pantomime trips for local families in need. The Youth Counselling Project was awarded £2,000 towards virtual counselling sessions and providing sessions with qualified children’s mental health and wellbeing therapists. The Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed, commented: ‘the grant appraisal process and what we learn about the applicants and their work for our town is an encouragement to the Councillors who form the grants panel. There are very many praise-worthy things being done in Seaford by our voluntary sector. We hope that the interest we take in the work of the applicants is as useful as the money that is awarded. My thanks to all the organisations who applied for grants of the dedication and hard work which has had such a positive impact in the community of Seaford. Whether successful or not in being awarded a grant, on behalf of the Council, I commend them all for their commitment and hard work.’ The next grants process will commence in April 2022, when application forms will be available to download from the Town Council’s website. 3 Early autumn is a good time for lawn

Whatever we choose to grow, however much we plan, the weather is of course outside of our control.

Around the world we are witnessing the effects of global warming, and being warned by the met office to expect hotter, drier summers, warmer, wetter winters and more frequent and intense weather extremes.

September is often one of the most rewarding months of the year, with its harvest of ripe fruit, still colourful borders, and weather that is often better than the summer. But will it be an Indian summer in 2021, will we get crisp early mornings and bright, balmy days?

The veg plot doesn’t need to be left idle over winter, there are crops that can go in now to reward you with an earlier harvest next year. Overwintering onion sets can go in now for harvesting from May onwards, or thinly sow seed for winter-hardy spring onions and thin out as necessary. Keep on top of the weeding with onions. Garlic can also be planted in the autumn, ideally in November, as it needs a cold period to grow successfully. Use named varieties from a garden centre or seed firm and plant in a sunny welldrained site with tops of the cloves just below the surface. If ground is heavy use modules and plant out in the spring. Cabbage (spring-hearting) plants can be put out now. If you haven’t grown your own from seed, plants are available from suppliers/garden centres.

Spinach is easy in rich, fertile soil with enough nitrogen and it can be sown up to early October. It requires regular watering and weeding to avoid any check to its fast, steady growth. Sow suitable varieties thinly in shallow drills where you want them to crop, and thin out seedlings according to use (baby salad leaves or vegetable leaves). Grandparents were very much in action doing sterling duty during the summer holidays, with volunteers Phil and Steph getting their respective granddaughter and grandson busy working in our garden at the Crouch, no doubt earning themselves a treat or two in the afternoon. While Steph set her grandson Stanley (11) to cut down gone-over Lychnis before its seeds blew into borders, Phil was encouraging Freyja (8) to pick runner beans while they were young and tender. But why, volunteer Andrea wanted to know, are these beans displaying red and white flowers? Simple: it turns out that the white-flowered one is a variety called Moonlight and the red is Firestone. Apparently these varieties have different susceptibilities to dry conditions, with the white being more resistant to drought. Allison explained that planting out these two varieties was something of an experiment, with neither having their flowers sprayed with water. So far both were performing equally well – but then again, there’s been quite a lot of water spraying about with the recent downpours.

Seaford Rotary

Opening of the Seaford Gateway On Saturday 17th July, the Mayor of Seaford opened the promenade storm gate at the top of The Causeway, thereby officially opening the Seaford Gateway linking the Seaford seafront and its visitors with the Seaford town centre and its independent shops, cafés, galleries and other points of interest.

The storm gate was funded, constructed and installed by Seaford Rotary. The gate ensures that visitors with mobility issues, wheelchair or pram users, have an additional access point to the promenade in winter, but one that can be closed when a storm warning is announced, thereby preventing shingle and sea water flowing on to the road. Seaford seafront becomes more popular year on year and as a result, Seaford Community Partnership and its partners saw an opportunity to encourage coastal visitors to the nearby, but not immediately visible, town centre, to support the local traders. The path of the Gateway is indicated by seagull signs on the pavement and posts at intervals between the seafront and the town centre, as well as highlighted by map signs on the seafront. The signs on the seafront from the end of Dane Road and from the Martello Tower point to the Gateway were installed by Seaford Rotary. The Mayor walked the gateway path in to the town centre with, amongst others, Councillor and Rotarian Jean Cash (Deputy Mayor of Seaford), Rotarian Keith Blackburn (Chair of the Seaford Community Partnership and event organiser), Ann Reed (Vice President of Seaford Rotary and also the Mayoress) and Peter White (Town Crier of Seaford). Speaking about the project, Keith Blackburn said: ‘It has been great to be able to help our excellent local businesses. In addition to the active involvement of the Partnership, Seaford Town Council, and Seaford Photos from top: Mayor of Seaford officially opening the storm gate leading to the town centre with Rotarian Clive Livingstone who installed the gate, Seaford Rotary stall selling plants provided by Rotarian Geoff Lowles.

Rotary, it has been necessary to obtain the agreement of the Environment Agency and East Sussex County Council who have the safety of the public very much in mind. The project has shown what can be achieved by volunteers working in partnership with the authorities.’ Speaking about the official opening, Councillor Rodney Reed, Mayor of Seaford, said: ‘To borrow from a wellknown phrase; this is one small stroll for visitors and one giant boost for our shops! I was honoured to be asked to be a part of opening the Gateway and would encourage everyone visiting the seafront to help this wonderfully unique project fulfil its purpose by walking into the town centre, patronising our local businesses and enjoying everything Seaford has to offer.’

August, September and October Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs The first of two Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs in August was the first to be held since restrictions to combat the pandemic had been removed, so there was no restriction on the number of stallholders, no one-way system and neither were stall holders required to wear face coverings and disposable gloves, although some still chose to wear face coverings. In addition to usual merchandise typically found at Boot Fairs, there were some unexpected objects for sale – an 8-person tent, Christmas decorations and toboggans (in August!), skateboard kits, and a purple violin. There also seemed to be many stalls selling brassware, and also golf balls – with two golf courses in Seaford, to some extent not a surprise. The next Seaford Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair will be held on 19th September. This fair will however not be the last fair in 2021, as there will also be an additional fair on 3rd October.

Mayor’s Civic Service 2021 Seaford Baptist Church was the venue for a wellattended Civic Service on Saturday, 31st July 2021. It was a welcome opportunity to gather together after so many months of restrictions. Neighbouring Towns and Parishes were represented by their Mayors and Chairs. The District Council and County Council were also represented as were the Police and Fire Service. Peter White, Seaford’s Serjeant at Mace led the procession into the Church, followed by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Sir Peter Field and his wife Margaret, the High Sheriff of East Sussex, Miles Jenner and his wife Sally and the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Rodney Reed and his wife Ann. The congregation appreciated the opportunity to sing with worship being led by Sally-Ann Fatkin, supported by Mike Kerry and Jenny Chapman. Great is Your Faithfulness and Praise Him you Heavens were appropriate songs of praise and thanksgiving. Laurie Holland, a member of Seaford Baptist Church, who with Keith Blackburn is a Freeman of Seaford, read the scripture, John’s Gospel Chapter 14, verses 1-7. Minister of Seaford Baptist Church and Mayor’s Chaplain, the Revd Andy Machin shared a reflection on the theme of Faith overcoming Fear. ‘Don’t allow your hearts to be gripped by fear, put your trust in God…’ Andy reminded us of the time in World War 2 when Britain was close to defeat with her army trapped at Dunkirk. King George VI called for a day of prayer on 26th May 1940, encouraging people to turn to God and plead for divine help. Millions flocked into churches across the land to pray for deliverance. Two events followed: a violent storm over the Dunkirk region grounding the Luftwaffe and then a great calm upon the Channel which allowed hundreds of tiny boats to sail across and rescue 335,000 stranded soldiers. Afterwards people referred to it as the Miracle of Dunkirk. There has been little mention of prayer from national leaders or the media throughout the pandemic but people of faith have continued to pray for release from its grip. Andy highlighted the vital role of the wider Church in helping the community through various voluntary works: the Food Bank in Seaford, Just Life in Brighton, the Chaplaincy team at Beachy Head,

Waves in Seaford and The Cabin at Cradle Hill. People of faith remain vitally important to our social fabric. In his address the Mayor spoke of the comfort of faith and the importance of community in these challenging times. He assured all who were present or watching the live stream at home that they were in the thoughts and prayers of the leadership and congregation. Councillor Reed commended the many organisations who keep us safe and spoke about his Mayoral themes of ‘Stronger Together’ and the need to protect our natural environment. He reported that Council meetings for the last few months have been held at the church building to enable social distancing and live streaming. He gave thanks to all involved in the Council and the various organisations who have worked tirelessly through the lockdowns and restrictions. The Chair of the Youth Counselling Project, Julia Hancock was interviewed about that work during the service and a retiring collection was taken for the Project. A Cornish Cream Tea was served by volunteers from the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford with delicious scones generously donated by Morrison’s. The pleasure at being able to gather continued, with many of the congregation evidently reluctant to go home. Congratulations to Councillor Rodney Reed for taking up his second term as Mayor of Seaford. We pray for God’s wisdom and blessings upon him as he continues to represent Seaford and support various charity initiatives. Flower Festival Seaford parish is holding another Flower Festival entitled, ‘Window on Our World’ at St Leonard’s Church, opposite the post office in Church Street from Friday 24th to Monday 27th September – open Friday, Saturday and Monday from 10am to 5pm and on Sunday from midday until 5pm after which there will be service of Evensong at 6pm. Arrangers from the church community and local flower clubs will be providing over 25 flower displays themed on different countries. There will be the opportunity to enjoy the historic atmosphere of this building, parts of which are over 900 years old, enhanced by musical interludes and refreshments. For the first time the Flower Festival will be part of Lewes Artwave and so in addition will host a small exhibition of paintings from 11th to 27th September. Of necessity this will be a small exhibition, casually displayed as it has to be able to be put up and taken down easily to accommodate existing services and bookings, and apart from weekends will be open during the regular hours of 10am – 1pm but closed on Thursdays. On occasions some of the exhibition may move outside. See posters and the Artwave website for fuller details. This is a retrospective exhibition of paintings by former local artists Anthony Morgan-Jones and Nina Buckland. Anthony held ‘Open House’ for several years and was a member of Seaford Art Club, Society of Sussex Painters, and exhibited at the Crypt, ROI Mall and the Royal Academy. The paintings together with unmounted watercolours and cards will be for sale to raise funds, which will go towards maintaining this historical landmark in Seaford’s town centre and for the work of the church in the community. The Edwardian Village Shop has reopened! We are very pleased to announce that the Edwardian Village Shop in the Seaford Museum has reopened. Now renamed as Lamberth and Early the shop has undergone a complete rebuild and reorganisation, due to extensive water damage and rot. Early in 2019 we realised that what we hoped was just a little leak above the existing shop was far more serious water penetration that had rotted the walls of the entire shop. Carefully, we removed the many hundreds of exhibits from the Shop and our ‘Heavy Gang’ of volunteers set to work stripping out, removing and replacing the damaged woodwork. The work was considerably interrupted by the first Covid lockdown and it wasn’t until September last year that the framework started to come together. Tragedy struck in October last year when Tony Lamberth – one of the driving forces behind the project – passed away suddenly. Tony had been a long-standing

and invaluable volunteer at the Museum and his presence is missed by everyone at the Museum.

Work continued through the autumn and a decision was made to change the name of the Shop to Lamberth and Early in honour of Tony and his hard-working colleague Brian Early. As we all remember, 2020 was punctuated with periods of lockdown that interrupted all our lives, and the work at the Museum was no exception. Full-scale work was not able to resume until early this year. With a new shop front, counter and talking models, our Edwardian Shop was ready to meet the world and was unveiled just a few weeks ago. As Jane Keel, Museum Chairman commented at the time: ‘Out a bit of a disaster has come the opportunity to renew and improve one of our outstanding and popular exhibits. The shop will remain a lasting monument to Tony, Brian and all the other craftsmen who worked so diligently during a very difficult time. We are proud of you.’

Seaford Music Society Seaford Music Society has an exciting series of concerts starting in the autumn and continuing through to spring 2022 to take place at Seaford Baptist Church in Belgrave Road, BN25 2EE. The first concert of the season will be held on Sunday 24th October at 3pm when the London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble will be playing. Their programme features the Beethoven Septet, Devienne Bassoon Quartet and the World Premiere of a specially-commissioned work by Paul Lewis, entitled Seaford Snapshots. During the Season there will be concerts given by The Bach Ensemble, The Marmen Quartet and the European Chamber Ensemble, as well as a Family Concert, ‘King Alfred, the Owl and the Nightingale’. The concert in March 2022 is a tribute to Kenneth V. Jones who lived in Seaford till his death a few months ago. An exploration of the music of this renowned film composer and the music that influenced him will be performed by friends and colleagues, curated and presented by composer Sally Beamish.

After our 17-month lockdown our club restarted its activities on Tuesday 10th August, at Seaford Blatchington Golf Club, for our delayed Annual General Meeting. Calling all pets

Ever eager to try something new and attract more people from the town. The Rector of St Peter’s Church, Seaford, is organising a service with a difference – an outdoor event at Blatchington Pond, on Sunday afternoon 5th September at 3pm. It will be for the whole community, and that means in particular every kind of pet, big and small, even tiny, obedient or less so, on leads or swimming idly round in a goldfish bowl, maybe even a dozing tortoise. And if for some reason you cannot bring your actual pet, don’t worry, bring along a photo of him or her instead. The service will be led by the Rector, the Rev Arwen Folkes, whose church of course is just up the hill from the pond. All will be very welcome to come along. In a way this afternoon could be a kind of reunion for Arwen, because recently she and some willing helpers carefully conducted a walk of rescue all the way from the church to the pond – and very slowly. A group of baby ducklings and their mother had apparently paid an unexpected visit to Seaford Primary School to have a family swim in their pool, and were happily ambling back when they called at the Rectory next to the church. Arwen, alarmed for their safety, quickly gathered some (human) helpers and prepared to conduct this cute little party back home, making their way cautiously and very curiously down Blatchington Hill. It took a while; the ducklings were keen to wander into as many gateways as they could and needed plenty of gentle ‘shooing’ to redirect them. Eventually they made it back to the pond, and all seemed to settle down quite happily. No doubt quite tired after such an excursion. Mission accomplished. We should perhaps stress that this little incident was not the spur to arrange this service, but if that little family of ducklings and mum are still present on that day no doubt the Rector will give them a special blessing.

Inner Wheel Summer Lunch with BBQ

Members of Inner Wheel were delighted to meet face to face as a group at the home of Co-President Janis Livingstone for a delicious Summer Lunch including a BBQ. The fantastic sunny weather, along with the excitement of being able to meet together, assisted in making the event such a success. In addition to a wide range of salads members enjoyed pulled pork and brisket with a variety of enticing deserts supplemented with glasses of Pimms! Cross Way Church At last – we can open up! No, we’re not referring to the pandemic and the lifting of restrictions, but the good news that the extensive renovation work on Cross Way Church is now completed. Sunday morning worship has been taking place in the Sanctuary for the past few weeks, but work on the rest of the building has taken a little longer. SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB Our competition for July was entitled ‘Cascade’ and we had some interesting entries from our members. It was not a particularly easy subject. We hope that the July competition was the last we have had to do virtually, as with the resumption of our meetings in August, we can now compete ‘in the flesh’ – our members have been desperate to bring their entries along to be judged in real life. The only advantage to competing via photographs is that there is no need to transport the design to the venue, which can often prove tricky. Our meeting on 16th September will be a social event, with the long-awaited presentation of trophies, flower quiz and You Be the Judge Competition. Several of our members will be participating in the St Leonard’s Flower Festival which takes place from 24th to 27th September. It is entitled ‘Window on Our World’ and is always well worth visiting. Looking ahead, at our meeting on 21st October we will be welcoming Nina Tucknott who will be demonstrating ‘When Art Met Flowers’. We meet at the Baptist Church Hall, Belgrave Road, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Christmas is Coming

Sorry for mentioning it but it’s right at the front of our minds at the moment. Just 14 weeks of rehearsals to go. In a new venture we will be adding another concert to our annual programme. Following our Autumn concert, which is on 27th November we will be presenting our first Christmas Concert in mid December. We usually add some carols and other Christmas treats to our Autumn concert but there is always that feeling that Christmas in November is pushing it a bit. Our MD, Colin, really didn’t like it so the answer was, do two concerts. So on 11th of December we will be in ‘The Cathedral of the Downs’ in Alfriston feeling very happy to be part of the festive season (4pm start for Christmas in the Gloaming) but for the moment everyone is busy with the planning.

Community Tea Room The Community Tea Room in the Old Town Hall is well named as our lovely volunteers are committed to making sure that all our customers enjoy the experience of being part of our community. If somebody wants to come in and have a tea or coffee with a biscuit or a piece of cake and read a book quietly for an hour, that’s absolutely fine. Or if they wish to chat to people at other tables that’s equally fine. Visitors for the first time do not feel pressurised to hurry and leave – they can sit and talk, chill out or get involved in whatever is the topic of conversation on that morning, or just enjoy the experience. We have regular customers who come from Peacehaven, Denton and Eastbourne, as well as our own town because they enjoy the simplicity of the Tea Room. A warm welcome is given to everybody who comes just because we are pleased to see them. Our opening hours are Mon to Fri 10am to 1pm and 10am to 12 noon on Saturdays.

What will we sing? Where will we get the music from? And of course, it isn’t your average year. We haven’t sung together for what seems like years. Never mind concert planning, just getting back together safely has been exercising many minds but we think we have it covered. A survey has gone out to members and they can’t wait to get going. It’s looking good. If you would like to join us and give it a go just go to the ‘Contact’ section of our website and drop us a line. There are no auditions, just a commitment to come along to rehearsals and sing your heart out. Music is varied, from ancient sacred music to Disney compilations. Not just Western music either. For our Summer concert next year we will be transported to Africa with Alexander L’Estrange’s Zimbé. Rehearsals start on 6th September at 7.15pm at the Baptist Church (arrive 30 minutes early to sort out music etc). We are starting with a performance (amongst ourselves) of Vivaldi’s Gloria. It doesn’t get much better than that. We are going to find out what Vivaldi in a face mask sounds like and what it feels like to sing with a big space around you in a large, well ventilated space. Strange times but it will still be exciting to get back together. Looking forward to singing for Seaford again and your continued support. Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail We published details of the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail in July, and the event took place over a very challenging two days! Stress levels were high for the 15 garden owners in the run up to the event as forecasts were predicting awful storms and heavy rain. In reality, Saturday saw a fair bit of sunshine with high visitor numbers, whereas Sunday saw a few downpours and much lower numbers. Nonetheless, the overall turnout was much better than expected. Driftwood Fundraising Group chair and trail organiser, Geoff Stonebanks, who opened his garden Driftwood in Seaford as part of the event, has been supporting Macmillan Cancer Support since 2012. He and his amazing team of green-fingered volunteers have now handed over a few pounds short of £100K to the charity over the last 10 years. Geoff said: ‘This year has been a real challenge for us all to get our gardens looking their best. We’d get out and deadhead to get it looking it’s best then the heavy rain would beat all the blooms down again, very frustrating. On average, all gardens saw over 100 visitors each on the Saturday and 60 or so on the Sunday, in the rain. Our true British style showed through, with many enjoying tea and cakes under rain-soaked umbrellas or buying takeaway cakes.’ Geoff introduced online ticket sales this year, and over 100 people took advantage of the option as well as an online facility to donate to Macmillan Cancer Support, which was also well used. Feedback from visitors has all been very positive with Geoff being able to sign up 3/4 new garden owners for 2022. Amazingly, the event has raised in excess of £8,000 for Macmillan. Rosie and James, who opened their garden in North Gardens in Brighton for the very first time said: ‘We’ve had a wonderful weekend with so many kind and generous visitors.’ Emma Hammett, the charity’s Relationship Fundraising Manager for London & South East said: “A huge thank you to every single garden owner who participated to

raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support’s Horizon Centre in Brighton. A special thank you goes to Geoff who organised the event and heads up the Driftwood Fundraising Group. Geoff has been supporting the charity for many years and we are so grateful for his dedication and support. His efforts mean that we will be able to be there for people living with cancer in Brighton and the surrounding areas – which is both fantastic and admirable.’ Pete Gillman, one of the visitors over the weekend, contacted Geoff after the event and wrote: ‘It was great to meet you yesterday and I wanted to drop you a line to thank you for all your hard work in organising the garden tour. I came away inspired and delighted by all the beautiful gardens I saw and thought it was a very cool crowd. I’m already looking forward to next year.’ Geoff confirms the 2022 event will take place over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th July, with updates found at www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk

50 Years of Helping People Move Stephen celebrates a landmark event this year. Back in 1971, he embarked on his career in estate agency, and 50 years on, he’s still going strong. In this article, Stephen shares some of his background, why he still loves being an agent and the significant changes the home moving industry has gone through. Stephen said: ‘I started off earning £10 a week at an agency in Grantham. From there, I spent 13 years serving the good people of Slough and becoming professionally qualified. ‘I became a little bored of Slough and took a job in Seaford. Death’s-head Hawk-moth

In August I was sent a photo of a giant caterpillar seen in an Iford garden. The colourful caterpillar, garish yellow with flamboyant blue chevrons and spots, was shuffling along on its stumpy legs like a miniature conga-line in search of a party. The caterpillar would have buried itself in some soft Sussex soil and, within its cocoon, would have undertaken an amazing transformation. Around November, a completely different beast will be emerging from the Iford earth and into the night skies; a moth. But, with a 12 cm wingspan and ornate patterned wings, this is no ordinary moth. Its beauty should be admired and respected if it wasn’t for one small thing. Stamped on its thorax is the spectral image of an eyeless human skull, an eerie façade that has given it its name; the Death’s-head hawkmoth.

The moth’s baleful birthmark has, for centuries, struck fear into the hearts of superstitious humans who have seen it as a messenger of the Devil. And, according to legend, this rare moth seems to have put in regular appearances throughout history. Even learned naturalists once claimed that the moth was a ‘foretelling of war, pestilence, hunger, and death to man and beast.’ Legend has it that the appearance of a number of Death’s-head hawkmoths signalled the start of the French Revolution in 1789. The moth appeared in the bedchamber of King George III; a visitation that allegedly tormented the crazed monarch and sped him to his demise in 1820. The Death’s-head’s notoriety has continued to seep through the centuries in art and literature. It appeared prophesying doom in Thomas Hardy’s Return of the Native (1878) and was an instrument of evil in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). In the surrealist film Un Chien Andalou (1929) it gave life to Salvador Dali’s nightmares. In 1968’s English horror The Blood Beast Terror Peter Cushing was on the trail of a monster that was halfwoman and half-hawkmoth. In 1991 the moth was seen perching on the lips of Jody Foster on posters advertising ‘The Silence of the Lambs’. In the film its cocoons were placed inside serial killer Buffalo Bill’s victims as a grizzly calling card (the hawkmoths that actually appeared in the movie were a different species to the ones that appeared in the original story; only a minor point but it did ruin the movie for me somewhat). Like all moths the Death’s-head hawkmoth is harmless. It is a largely African species which some years undertakes an amazing migration north, arriving on extremely rare occasions in Sussex. Of course, its links to death and destruction are just superstitious claptrap. But with a Death’s-head on the loose in Sussex this Autumn I’d keep your windows closed, just in case. Seaford u3a News Everything is gradually coming together to get Seaford u3a started again with live instead of online activities. What has been so encouraging is that it’s clear that the majority of members have just been biding their time until things could get back to normal. Most members are as keen on u3a as they ever were and are now showing their support in the best possible way – by attending events. Live coffee mornings are now the order of the day. These will take place on the third Wednesday of each month between 10am and 12 noon at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. As before they are open to members and non-members, providing an entry for new members and those curious to find out what goes on in u3a. Committee members will be circulating to talk to anyone who has come along not knowing others, but in general u3a members are a friendly bunch and it should not be too difficult to find someone to talk to. Members are having to get used to chatting – a skill which became rather rusty in the pandemic. The cost of the coffee morning is just £2 for coffee or tea and light refreshments. The Welcome Back buffet was much appreciated by members and was limited to just 50 to allow for spacing at the Con Club. The cakes were particularly yummy! The chairman gave a short welcoming speech thanking members for attending. He also thanked the committee for their work throughout the year and in putting together a programme of events to allow the u3a to recommence successfully. There was a lot of chatter, free glass of wine, free food and a good vibe. The pub lunch

Though not quite the same as before, members had missed socialising at the pub lunch and it was clear that they were out to enjoy themselves in taking this big step back to normality. The pub lunch will continue to be held at the White Lion on Claremont Road, Seaford each month and is only open to members. The prospectus for groups and Downs talks came out in July, and within hours some of the smaller or more unusual groups were fully booked. Fortunately some groups are to be held in halls, such as the Con Club or the Downs and these have more spaces for members. More groups have been added since the first selection was publicized and it is hoped that yet more will be added. Details of groups are on the website. Members are also able to sign up in advance for the talks to be held at the Downs from September. The range of subjects is very wide and several of them are given by members under the heading of ‘Members Interests’. Topics include Gardens of Normandy, Artificial Intelligence and Opiates. To take part in the activities of Seaford u3a (apart from the coffee mornings) it is necessary to become a member. The membership year runs from 1st August to 31st July and the subscription is only £10 per person. Groups held at external venues have a small extra charge to contribute towards the cost of the venue but groups held in members’ houses have no charge except for a token payment for refreshments. The grandfather was especially challenging and would leave the house in the early hours of the morning with his shopping bag full to the brim with all the cutlery in the house and would be found wandering, confused and cantankerous when approached. To this day they remember him wandering about in his pjs, slippers and their mother’s coat, hauling a bag of knives and forks, with no real idea why he did it. That’s the thing about dementia. It makes no real sense how it will affect the individual or how quickly it will take hold, until you’re left with a seeming shadow of the person you used to know.Yet, the individual does remain, and though it may require more effort to dig down to find the person you once knew, they are there and there are rich moments to be shared still with them.
